"The financial valuation of mining assets has a number of fundamental differences to the valuation of many other asset groupings. One such difference is that typically, the greater proportion of both the cost and revenue sides of the cash flow are inherently governed by systemic market forces.As a result, the range of outcomes for the valuation of each mining asset is more unpredictable, with higher levels of risk and uncertainty. In contrast, the management function of many other non-mining businesses or industry groups can control at least a portion of the cash flow by maintaining the margin or controlling the sales price. The management teams of mining businesses and operations typically have limited options, and are thus price-takers for both costs and revenues. As mining is an inherently cyclical industry, large, long-life operations can exist through several price cycles, making valuation both subjective and challenging.The outcomes of both static- and stochastic-based valuations, as well as the internal probabilities of the associated cash flow statements, are significantly impacted when the correlations between the appropriate parameters are quantified, modelled and incorporated into the valuation framework. The appropriate parameters for correlation modelling primarily include those that are governed by systemic market forces. Applying this process results in a different risk profile for the asset by allowing the risks resulting from systemic market movements to be more accurately quantified and then objectively minimised. The equipment and general smelter layout for the Mount Isa Copper Smelter were designed by engineers associated with the American Smelting and Refining Company and by Mount Isa staff engineers. The final notice of site was dictated by the need for 'building the smelter near the existing Mount Isa power house to enable full use to be made of the steam from the waste heat boilers. Although much excavation work was necessary before concrete foundations could be poured, the location lends itself to further expansion should it become necessary. The plant is designed and constructed to involve straight line smelting operations which include the following major steps in the overall scheme.1. Charge make-up.2. Roasthig.3. Reverberatory smelting.4. Converting.5. Refining.6. Casting.CHARGE MAKE-UPA system of proportioning bins is provided for preparing the feed mixture for the roasters, Sulphide concentrate containing 24% copper wiil be delivered by belt conveyor from the filter plant to the smelter storage patio. This is a large roofed concrete floor that provides a maximum storage capacity of 8,000 tons of concentrate. Eight proportioning bins located below but adjacent to the south end of the patio will be used for actual charge make-up from which concentrate, ore and flux will be proportioned to the feed belt and conveyed to the roaster feed hoppers. "Recent project failures have called into question the use and relevance of benchmarking and independent reviews, forcing a rethink of traditional processes and procedures.With cost estimates and schedules dramatically varying from lows seen around the global financial crisis to peaks experienced in the recent mining boom, benchmarking has ranged between essential and misleading.Profound shifts are now underway in future project delivery strategies as the market moves away from cost-plus engineering, procurement and construction management. The current trends in project implementation are to utilise more lump-sum design and construct or fixed-price supply and construct contracts. This trend will remove transparency in detailed cost information by reducing the sources and clarity of cost data.Independent peer reviews (IPRs) of studies and investment recommendations performed over the last decade have both failed to prevent flawed or deficient projects from proceeding to approval and funding, and been successful in ensuring that owners did not proceed with doomed investments.In recent times, it has been recognised by some owners, contractors and engineers that traditional benchmarking checks or IPRs, or a combination of both, will not necessarily produce reliable assessments of study conclusions and of the forecasts of project outcomes. To be of value, the benchmarking process now also needs to recognise the highly volatile responses from the engineering and construction industry to the current and future markets for their services.Similarly, reviewers who draw upon benchmarks of past project experiences on an understanding of the things that shaped and influenced their outcomes need to be more aware of how a future dynamic market may impact the outcome of the projects and raise warning flags accordingly.With the commodity cycle currently approaching what is hoped is its bottom, ensuring that benchmarking and independent reviews evolve into reliable, transparent and worthwhile processes becomes even more important. Atlas Copco is a leading provider of industrial productivity solutions (Atlas Copco, 2007) and one of the worldÆs largest suppliers of rock drilling equipment. The business division of Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Technique is based in +rebro, Sweden with the majority of their equipment produced in a number of facilities within the area. As part of the 2006 AusIMM/Atlas Copco Scholarship I was fortunate enough to visit these facilities to experience first hand this truly unique global company. Through numerous presentations on the various divisions and products manufactured by the company, I saw the broad range of products and services offered by the company and came to realise it is much more than just selling drills. Other highlights included a brief love affair, a tour of EuropeÆs largest underground mine (or factory depending who you ask), a drink at the ice bar at the ice hotel in JukkasjSrvi, and a number of dinners of reindeer. Overall this it was a truly amazing experience with all involved with the program going out of their way to ensure I got the most out of the trip. More importantly, through no effort at all, everyone naturally conveyed their passion for the industry and the company which is a great credit to the æAtlas Copco WayÆ thereby creating a company æcommitted to your superior productivity through interaction and innovationÆ.

Leightons is the sole contractor at the Wahana Coal Mine Project (part of the Bayan Group), a multi-seam thermal deposit consisting of 13 coal seams with thicknesses ranging from 20 cm to 500 cm. The average dip of the deposit is 18 - 20°. However the deposit is heavily faulted in certain domains with anticlinal and synclinal structures present causing seams to dip up to 90°. Average thickness of coal inter-burdens range from less than 2 to 12 m. The minimum coal thickness being mined is 20 cm. Coal production is direct mine mouth feed and there is no coal processing plant currently used.Conventional blasting between the highly variable coal horizons in the early phases of the mine life was suboptimal from a production perspective. Drilling short holes with a reduced drill pattern, and on occasions with sloping benches, resulted in low drilling and explosives loading efficiency.A high frequency of small size blasts fired up to two times daily was required with each blast consisting of four up to five small blast areas. Each blast averaged approximately 36 000 bcm thus causing a low utilisation rate of the mining fleet from frequent blast delays and the inability to deploy larger Liebherr 9350 excavators on bench. It was identified that increasing the production targets required a more efficient drilling and blasting process. Furthermore, due to the highly variable nature of the deposit, the existing coal model was determined to not be able to accurately predict the coal seam location prior to blasthole drilling.In August 2009, Leighton Contractors Indonesia and Orica Mining Services with the full support of the Wahana team, initiated through seam blasting trials using electronic blasting systems. Further trials were conducted in November 2009. Trial evaluations indicated that the benefits from decreased lost time events due to blasting, an increased vertical advance rate per blast, and increased overall blast size could be attained while not damaging or diluting coal.Full-scale?through seam blasting has been ongoing since February 2010 for the upper eight coal seams to extract coal seam thicknesses ranging from 20 - 100 cm. This paper will discuss the parameters of the through seam blasting process in Wahana and the resulting benefits to the overall mine production.

The Northparkes copper-gold project is being developed in Central Western New South Wales approximately 30 km NNW of the town of Parkes and approximately 350 km west of Newcastle. The project is a joint venture between North Limited (80 per cent) and the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent). North is the manager. The basis of the project is three copper-gold orebodies, the northern two of which are being mined by conventional open cut methods with the third and largest orebody at the southern end of the lease to be mined by block caving. A fourth mineralised body has been identified in the centre of the lease. While further evaluation of this deposit is required it would appear to be amenable to block caving. Oxide caps of gold ore and copper-gold ore over-lie the two northern orebodies. Development commenced with the construction of a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant to treat the oxide gold ore. Construction of a flotation plant to treat oxide copper-gold ore and sulphide copper-gold ore is underway. When full-scale operation is achieved late in 1996 the plant will treat 5.0 million tonnes of ore per year of which 1.1 million tonnes will be open cut ore and 3.9 million tonnes will be block cave ore. In terms of annual ore tonnage the underground mine will be the largest metalliferous mine in New South Wales and the second largest in Australia.

"Mining has still today high potential for improvement in the exploitation efficiency. Especially low-grade ores have very low recoveries. In Cu bioleaching operations from porphyry copper deposits extraction of only five and 15 per cent with maximum of 40 per cent are reached. This means that 60–95 per cent of the resource is not exploited. Consequently, any metal not extracted will end up in the waste material, therefore increasing the risk of environmental pollution. This inefficiency is mainly due to the use of element concentrations for decision-making on the daily basis of a mining operation (eg cut-off ore grade, acid-base accounting – ABA). If, instead, quantitative mineralogical and geochemical data together with information on the bioleaching behaviour of the ore assemblage (the biogeometallurgical approach), is used for decision-making right from the beginning of the exploitation, higher recoveries and less environmental impact can be achieved, ie an increase in sustainability can be reached.CITATION:Dold, D, 2016. For more than four decades, rehabilitated lands in the Bowen Basin have been planted with buffel grass (Cenchrus Ciliaris), which is often used to provide rapid, stabilising and erosion reducing cover to reshaped landforms (Erskine and Fletcher, 2013; Harwood, Hacker and Mott, 1999; Grigg, Shelton and Mullen, 2000; Naidu et al, 1997). Historically introduced to Central Queensland and encouraged by pastoralists in the early 1900s (Humphreys, 1967), the species has been extensively used by mine managers in seeding mixes (Coaldrake and Russell, 1970; Edye, 1975), and the invasive nature of the grass has led to the monodominance in rehabilitated areas of semi-arid Central Queensland. With 40 open cut coalmines in Central Queensland (Department of Natural Resources and Mines, 2015), a considerable amount of land is either disturbed mine footprint (156 200 ha) or rehabilitated (29 200 ha) (Dale, 2015), and the bulk of rehabilitation consists of relatively young (<30-year-old) developing ecosystems, with demonstrated biomass fuel loads up to 20 t/ha (Grigg, Shelton and Mullen, 2000).Uncontrolled fire poses a significant risk to rehabilitated landforms that are located in close proximity to mining infrastructure, neighbouring communities, open pits with exposed flammable coal seams and flammable stockpiled coal resource. Mine lease holders in Queensland have the added responsibility of managing and protecting any endangered regional ecosystem communities, and flora and fauna listed federally under the Environment Protection Biodiversity and Conservation Act 1999 or the State Vegetation Management Act 1999; as well as, any culturally significant sites such as scar trees or middens that are found on-site. Additionally, uncontrolled fire in rehabilitated landscapes poses a significant risk to mine site closure goals, with the potential to create altered states and stalled ecological trajectories (Grant, 2006). Although the last decade has seen the growth of many new licencing and approval requirements for the exploration and mining industries, there remains in each State of Australia and the Northern Territory a predominant "Mining Act" containing provisions for the grant of exploration and mining tenements. What then are the rights and duties of tenement holders either by virtue of a Mining Act or through other approval and licencing mechanisms? What rights and duties does a person acquire when he is granted an exploration licence or a mining lease? In this paper I will attempt to cover these types of questions using in particular examples from New South Wales. I will also refer to a range of other subordinate approvals and licences which today's society requires and the need for ethics and recognition of liabilities.

Sedimentary rock is a lithology that is commonly encountered in mining practices. Their properties, especially the resistance against weathering, are often of critical importance to long-term engineering stability due to their ubiquitous existence on the earth’s crust. The weathering of rocks is a complex process that involves physical degradation, chemical and biological erosions. In this study, the impact of physical weathering on four common sedimentary rocks, namely sandstone, siltstone, limestone and shale, are simulated in the laboratoryoratory environment taking into consideration the impact of preservation condition, temperature and time. In order to optimise the design of the experiment, Taguchi’s design of experiment method is implemented based on the L16 orthogonal array and selected simulation conditions. The weight and dimension variation, fracture intensity, slake durability, and uniaxial strengths of specimens are then tested to quantify the impact of weathering under various conditions. The results indicate that weathering significantly influences the strength of shale, siltstone and limestone but not sandstone. The impact of weathering on dimension variation is insignificant. For soft rocks, most physical weathering took place after second cycle of simulation, resulting in strength reduction up to 100 per cent (disintegration) but generally in a range from 28 per cent to 32 per cent. Additionally, time is the most important factor contributing to the physical weathering of weak rocks, followed by residual, preservation conditions and temperature. Last but not least, some shales, depending on the content of clay minerals, tend to develop significant fracturing or even disintegrate under the influence of weathering.

The West Australian Government hold an annual ‘Mines Safety Roadshow’ around the State’s regions and the capital city, Perth. Each year presenters provide an update on legislation and safetyrelated themes. A recurring theme is the mining industry fatality rate. Professor Michael Quinlan’s ‘Ten Pathways to Death and Disaster’ (Quinlan, 2014) has been referenced regularly to assist in structuring workshops and conversations concerning fatality prevention in the mining industry. The ‘Ten Pathways’ are the outcome of an analysis of fatal injuries in the mining industry, which identified a series of common themes to the fatalities: Pathway 1: Design, engineering, technical and maintenance flaws. Pathway 2: Prior warnings or causes for alarm ignored. Pathway 3: Failures in risk assessment. Pathway 4: Failures in management systems and hazard management plans. Pathway 5: Failures in auditing. Pathway 6: Economic pressures compromising safety. Pathway 7: Failures in regulatory oversight and inspection. Pathway 8: Worker and others expressing concern prior to the incident. Pathway 9: Poor management – worker communication and trust. Pathway 10: Emergency and rescue resources and procedures. To determine a fatality risk profile we asked participants at the Mines Safety Roadshows to indicate their perception of their employer’s performance in each of the Ten Pathways. We administered the questionnaire at the Mines Safety Roadshows in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2023. In this paper, we report on the results of the questionnaires, and suggest how organisations can improve their fatality risk score.

This paper describes how specific technical and regulatory issues related to water management have been dealt with at Anglo AmericanÆs Moranbah North mine. It compiles the collection of practices that have been implemented since 2010 in response to climatic and regulatory drivers. Operations must continually evolve as they face emerging challenges. For Moranbah North mine, one key challenge is the integration of its mine water system to that of its new neighbouring mine Grosvenor. The commitment to ongoing improvement has placed the mine in a good position to face this particular challenge.Water-related risks were identified then mitigated by technical practices, which have focused on improving underground water management, increasing storage capacity and installing a state-of-the-art control system for the management of water on-site and for releases of mine-affected water to the environment. These practices are supported by an extensive monitoring and audit system that provides confidence in the reporting of activities and outcomes. Iron Road Limited (Iron Road) is currently evaluating the feasibility of producing 21.5 Mt/a of high-grade (>66 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 3.7 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate can be produced via a conventional grind and low-intensity magnetic separation flow sheet. Due to the comparatively coarse magnetite liberation size (106 µm), consideration was given to enhancing both the grind economics and coarser product sizing via gravity separation.This paper outlines the test work, flow sheet design and engineering design of a gravity beneficiation circuit (GBC) conducted by Mineral Technologies for Iron Road. The resulting circuit optimisation necessitated mass balance simulation by Iron Road’s SysCAD model to quantify the resulting changes in mill recirculation load. This included the determination of project-critical grinding power and energy requirements with and without the GBC installed into the primary ball mill classification circuit. The outcome of this work was the design of a GBC, including spirals and up-current classification, which led to a substantial reduction (33 per cent) in ball mill recirculating load and power requirements, together with a favourable coarsening of final product size due to the relatively coarser gravity concentrate. This has led to a significant reduction in project design capital and operating costs. A further benefit of this approach is increased recovery of (paramagnetic) hematite and lesser titano-hematite via gravity separation compared to an all-magnetic separation approach.CITATION:Hunt, A G, Showers, G J and Botman, P, 2015. The reduction of small, dense zinc oxide (ZnO) samples in CO/CO2, and CO/N2 gas mixtures has been investigated at temperatures between 900 and 1100¦C. The microstructural characterisation of the reacted and partially reduced samples was complemented with measurements of the rates of the reactions. The mechanisms and kinetics of reduction of zinc oxide were found to be dependent upon the CO partial pressure, the oxygen potential of the gas mixtures, temperature and degree of reduction.

In narrow orebodies the use of ordinary kriging (OK) may pose certain limitations when used for grade control modelling. The smoothing effect of kriging, by its very nature, cannot retain or accurately characterise the dispersion (variability) that is inherent in gold deposits. This dispersion is a critical component of determining the desired level of ore loss and dilution.Fixed block model positions used in OK, and all estimation approaches, within a grade control process may never align with the ‘true’ ore boundary. This may lead to excessive ore loss and dilution, especially within narrow lodes.Using a risk-based approach to ore block design based on the geostatistical method of conditional simulation (CS) can highlight the differences achieved when an alternative method to OK is used for grade control modelling. By using a mesh of nodes and the application of a ‘transfer function’ to the simulation models, the position for ore contacts can be better assessed than when using fixed blocks in OK. Therefore, the value of various ore block boundaries can be better analysed by objective assessment of ore loss and dilution for a given minimum mining selectivity (selective mining unit or SMU), even in narrow lodes.A case study of a narrow vein gold deposit, comparing the results from an OK model and a CS model shows that whilst both models show similar trends – waste, low-grade, and high-grade regions are the same in both cases – the simulation model can provide greater insight for optimal definition of the mineralisation boundary.CITATION:Haylett, M E, Weeks, A, Matthews, G D and Khosrowshahi, S, 2014. Oxidation of artificial Imperial Smelting Furnace lead bullion was performed during cooling between 1180 and 820°C in order to attempt to produce a tin-rich dross.The addition of sodium carbonate together with stirring increased the tin content of the dross when oxidation was carried out with air or PbO on zinc-free bullion.Zinc in the bullion during oxidation resulted in a decrease in tin concentration of the dross due to zinc oxidation and copper entering the dross.

The magmatic arcs of SE Asia and SW Pacific contain some of the worldÆs major magmatic-hydrothermal gold deposits. Most gold deposits in SE Asian and SW Pacific arcs formed during periods of plate reorganisation rather than during periods of normal or steady state subduction. These plate reorganisations were caused initially by the collisions of the Australian Craton with the Philippines-Halmahera Arc and the Ontong Java Plateau with the Melanesian Arc at ~25 Ma. A second Mid-Miocene period of mineralisation accompanied plate reorganisation following maximum rotation or extrusion of Indochina and cessation of spreading in the South China Sea at ~17 Ma. However, the vast majority of deposits from New Zealand to Taiwan formed since 7 Ma during an important period of tectonic reorganisation that accompanied and followed changes in the relative motion between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates between ~8 and 3.5 Ma. Magmatism in unusual tectonic settings produced the most abundant and largest deposits with many deposits associated with high-K calc-alkaline, shoshonite, adakite and alkaline magmatism. In particular peak mineralisation appears related to melting of sub-arc lithosphere that has been previously modified by subduction. During large-scale plate reorganisation this can occur towards or at the end of a period of normal subduction, following arc collision or accompanying subduction reversal at approximately the same time in different parts of a complex system of arcs such as in SE Asia and the SW Pacific.

Global methods used to explore for minerals have progressed relatively slowly since the development of the first diamond core drill in 1863. Since then, key developments such as wireline geophysics (1920s), the tricone drill bit (1930s) and aeromagnetic surveys (1940s) all occurred in response to global events. In this project, BHP’s WAIO Geoscience operations team hypothesise that a global movement towards a greener future as well as an increasing intolerance for safety events will drive another step change in exploration methods. We have leveraged our relationships with exploration contractor partners and industry leaders to develop a realistic vision for 2033 and beyond, where drill rigs, earthworks and geophysical units are operated and maintained remotely; emissions of dust and waste are eliminated; hazardous energy sources are controlled; procurement is based on sustainability rather than cost and carbon emissions are tracked with the same rigour as production metrics. We have combined these visions into a series of graphical illustrations with the aim of inspiring ourselves, our vendors and our peers to collaborate further on producing a step change in our industry.

In the raisebore industry, there are two known methods of removing large diameter reamer heads once the reaming of an underground shaft is complete: 1. Lower the reamer head to the base of the shaft and use a thermal lance to cut the drill string and drag the reamer away from the hole. This method exposes the person doing the job to falling rocks from the unsupported mineshaft, a hazard which is difficult to control and has caused fatalities. 2. Install breast plates in the backs above the reamer head at the top of the hole, and use air hoists to lift the reamer out of the hole. Steel beams are then placed across the hole which the reamer is lowered down onto, dragged forward away from the hole, disassembled, and removed. This method is time consuming, expensive, and complex in the controls required to ensure safe completion of the job At Carrapateena, the air hoist method had been successfully used, however, with the cost involved and the complexity of this process, development of an improved and fit for purpose reamer removal method was pursued. OZ Minerals collaborated with Pybar to develop an industry first application of Enerpac SL100 lift and shift technology; a track mounted system with hydraulic lifting units that can both lift the reamer out of the hole and tram it back along the tracks away from the hole. A key component of turning the idea into a reality was by establishing a truly collaborative relationship between client and contractor. When the SL100 mobile gantry arrived, it was set up in Adelaide and trialled with the whole raise bore crew attending the two-day workshop and risk assessment; a rare opportunity for drillers. There have now been five successful reamer removals with the SL100 mobile gantry at Carrapateena. It has proven to be an efficient process with the entire process from setup to demobilisation taking less than 48 hours. This new way has completely removed hot works and uncontrolled hazards from working at the bottom of a shaft. It has also saved the reamer stabiliser from being cut and thus wasted. Exposure to the open hole has been minimised significantly as assembly of the SL100 is completed well forward of the open hole. This new process is exponentially safer, quicker and cheaper.

Tunnel excavation may induce adverse effects on nearby existing structures/foundations in urban areas. Accurate prediction of tunnelling effects on pile foundations of nearby structures in the urban environment poses a major challenge during design. Several studies have been undertaken to understand the mechanisms of the soil-tunnel-pile interaction, which focused only on influence of tunnelling on nearby existing building and foundations. However, effect of pile loading on existing tunnels did not receive enough research attention so far. So it is essential to measure the response of existing tunnel-lining due to loading on newly constructed pile to assess to the safety against the additional forces/moment caused by pile loading and to evaluate the critical distance for the proposed construction of any structures from the tunnel location. This paper presents result of three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis carried out in ABAQUS to investigate the effects of pile loading on existing tunnels embedded in cohesive soil. It is found that the effects on tunnel lining depend on horizontal separation distance between pile and tunnel as well as location/elevation of pile tip with respect to tunnel location.
