The Iron Bridge magnetite mine and infrastructure project is currently in development as a joint venture between Fortescue Metals Group, Formosa and Baosteel. It is supported by an extensive database of reverse circulation drill hole samples analysed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), with a large subset tested for concentrate mass recovery, concentrate and tail grades by Davis tube recovery (DTR) testing. A limited number of rock physical testing results, including unconfined/uniaxial compressive strength and crushing work index, completes the database.By combining all available information – assays, DTR results, geology, stratigraphy, mineralogy and rock physical results – and using multivariate statistical analysis techniques, the impact of the critical factors that control concentrate quality, mass recovery and grindability characteristics have been outlined. A set of geochemical groups was created by using a cluster analysis technique from the combined XRF-DTR data. These groups allow optimal separation of material with consistently high concentrate Fe grades and mass recovery. This approach is superior to domaining based on stratigraphic logging or mass recovery as it is commonly used in standard magnetite estimation models. Using the results of a normative mineralogy study, the main geochemical groups were given a mineralogical profile fitting their geochemical characteristics. These findings further refined the understanding of the link between the process characteristics of the samples and their geochemical signature and mineralogy.The geochemical grouping defined on head grades and DTR concentrate mass recovery was generalised into a ‘geomet’ code based solely on the routinely assayed head grades, thus bypassing the need for systematic DTR testing. The geomet code identifies spatial domains with homogeneous geochemistry, mineralogy and process characteristics in both oxide and fresh material that form the basis of the current Iron Bridge resource model. The allocation of geometallurgical characteristics in terms of concentration amenability and concentrate characteristics on a block-by-block basis over the whole project allows for an optimum mine schedule and plant feed. This ensures that the desired concentrate characteristics and mass recovery can be better predicted over the life-of-mine, thereby improving the mine’s economics and stability by derisking the mine schedule and optimising the performance of the concentrators. A key benefit of the geomet code devised for the Iron Bridge mine is that it can be attributed in an automated manner to all samples analysed for a routine XRF analytical suite, from exploration to blasthole drilling. This allows each sample to be allocated to a geometallurgical material type with predictable process response in terms of concentrate mass recovery and concentrate quality without the need to complete systematic DTR testing.A standard multivariate analysis coupled with a cluster analysis has allowed the linking of interdisciplinary results between geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, process and metallurgy to better understand, predict and ultimately mine and process the Iron Bridge deposits. The safe life cycle of a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is founded on the fundamentals of proper design, construction, operation and closure. Leinster Nickel Operations (Leinster) utilises four active TSF cells that are cycled between filling (deposition), desiccation, and construction to meet a targeted rate of rise. This results in ongoing and consistent raising of the TSF walls. Critical to maintaining the safe life cycle through this consistent wall raising is precision construction and high frequency quality assurance to ensure compliance to design requirements and TSF walls free from defects. Leinster has recently deployed Intelligent Machine Control technology for TSF construction. Advances in Intelligent Machine Control have decreased variability in construction; ensuring variations are within the tolerances of design. The Intelligent Machine Controls are programed to ensure construction conforms to design tolerances of +/-30mm. This level of accuracy provides assurance of borrow area set out, compacted layers are as per design, compaction monitoring is within the zone placed, scarification between layers to prevent lamination is maintained, and batter angles are set to the correct grade. This level of control provides certainty that construction meets the design intent. In conjunction with Intelligent Machine Control, periodic drone surveys are conducted to verify construction against design. Advancement in survey equipment and techniques allow higher frequency, high accuracy survey to be completed on demand by site based personnel. This provides quality assurance through all stages of the construction phases, as well as the final constructed wall, ensuring compliance to design. Combining Intelligent Machine Control with higher frequency quality assurance provides an increased level of certainty that the TSF construction is defect free and within quality specifications. These recent technological advancements in Construction and Quality Assurance ensure cell raises are constructed to the design intent with greater levels of accuracy and precision than ever before.

Estimating the probability of failure for embankments is not intuitive. It requires not only an appreciation of the strength of the embankment, but an understanding of the variability and uncertainty in the strength parameters as well. These additional aspects are, in themselves, relatively new to most practicing engineers, and therefore require some discussion.This paper discusses the concepts of probability and uncertainty, and presents a reliability-based numerical experiment, together with a literary study and collation of some of the author’s historical slope stability analyses, to investigate whether a direct relationship between safety factors and probabilities of failure exists for certain levels of uncertainty in strength parameters. In doing so, a useful tool is presented whereby knowing the safety factor of a simple slope or embankment with a consistent level of uncertainty, one can infer an approximate probability of failure.CITATION:Gover, S M, 2018. Uranium occurrences and the probable Australian reserves are discussed and the recovery and processing methods used in treatment plants at Radium Hill and Port Pirie, S.A., Rum Jungle and Moline, N.T., and Mary Kathleen, Qid. are reviewed. The broad aspects of the application of nuclear power in Australia are then considered, and those factors of greatest significance are highlighted. It is these factors that are most likely to dictate the future role of nuclear generation in Australia. In commenting on private industry applications, the paper emphasises that each case must be considered on its own merits, and a warning is given that general statements can be misleading. In the long-term situation nuclear power is considered to be capable of playing a leading role and the discussion covers desalination and high load industries although short term applications appear difficult to justify. In non-power applications for nuclear energy reference is made to isotopes and the uses of nuclear devices in mining and civil engineering with a pertinent comment on safety.

Coal washability data can be used for assessing coal quality. However, the techniques of using these data to solve quality problems differ from one mine to another and certain problems may never really be investigated due to limitations of the available techniques. One promising way to overcome these limitations is by correct application of geostatistics.A geostatistical study on coal washability data was undertaken based on a data set of closely spaced in-pit bore cores. These bore cores were analysed consistently over a relatively simple geological area. The average distance between the drill holes was about lOOm. There were 78 drill holes available for the area after deleting the erroneous bore cores. During the study, nine extra closely spaced drill holes were drilled within a single mining block.A procedure to construct two coal quality models, a kriging or cokriging model and a simulation model, was proposed. The modelling results for the data above are discussed and results of a mine scheduling exercise based on the models developed are included.

The Overall Slope Angle (OSA) of pitwalls plays a crucial role in the financial return of an open pit mine. In current practice, pitwall profiles are designed to be planar in cross-section within each rock layer, ie the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. A new slope design software, OptimalSlope, has been recently proposed to determine the geotechnically optimal profile shapes for the pitwalls of mines. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimisation problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall to be designed is maximised for an assigned stratigraphy, rock properties (unit weight and strength) and Factor of Safety. The geometry of the benches is provided as input to OptimalSlope. The results obtained so far on three mine case studies in isotropic rock masses (Utili et al, 2022; Agosti et al, 2021a, 2021b) show that optimal profiles are up to 5° steeper than their planar counterparts – ie the planar profiles exhibiting the same FoS – leading to realising significant saving on waste rock and as a consequence Net Present Value increments and carbon footprint reductions. OptimalSlope algorithms have been modified to deal with anisotropic rock masses characterised by direction dependent shear strength. In the paper, the case of rock masses in banded iron formations (BIF) is tackled. A data set of anisotropic rock shear strengths typical of Western Australia is considered. The Snowden modified nonlinear model was employed to characterise the anisotropy of the rock mass shear strength. From the OptimalSlope simulations performed emerges that optimal pitwall profiles can increase significantly the Overall Slope Angle in comparison with planar profiles featured by the same Factor of Safety. LEM stability analyses of all the profiles were also performed by Rocscience Slide 2 to independently verify the FoSs of the optimal profiles obtained.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the efficient operation of a tailings dewatering circuit comprising a thickener and filter press through proper control and automation. It is common to see thickeners and filter press circuits each with their own control systems. This can cause multiple issues when trying to increase efficiency and reliability of the tailings management process. By automating the thickener and filter press controls, you are eliminating any delays and inconsistencies caused by human error and process variations. When done properly the system can maintain a consistent product as the feed characteristics change. Previously, operators would have to monitor the process parameters and adjust the system accordingly. This can now be accomplished using state of the art process control equipment that continuously monitors and adjusts critical variables using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) loops. This paper addresses, in particular, the influence of winding depth on the selection of head ropes for Koepe winders. Because this is just one aspect of winder design that affects the operational safety of the winding system, the paper starts by considering all the issues governing the life and safety of the winding ropes. Regulations from a variety of countries are reviewed and comparisons of the legislated rope factors of safety and their variation with winding depth are made. This is followed by a discussion of the typical observed mode of in-service deterioration of Koepe head ropes. This mode of deterioration is due to fatigue and is influenced by the load range occurring in the ropes. Parameters contributing to load range are discussed and the influence of winding depth is highlighted. Lessons learned from early experience with very deep Koepe winders in South Africa are recalled. Predictions of load range as a function of depth are made, from which general rope life predictions are made for ropes selected by conventional national factor of safety requirements. This is illustrated in graphs comparing rope life as a function of depth. Typically a reducing life with depth is predicted. A rope selection strategy is advocated, which is based on achieving a constant rope life irrespective of the depth of wind. A new factor of safety (or rope design factor) equation is prepared that has the trend of increasing with depth. This proposed equation is compared with other published proposals that promote an increasing rope factor of safety with depth. It is shown that smoother winder drive controls enhance winding rope life and this improvement is quantified. The paper concludes by pointing out the consistency in predicted and observed life of winding ropes selected in accordance with legislated factor of safety approaches. It recommends the adoption of a new rope design factor equation for rope selection, to be used in conjunction with appropriate codes of practice for winding rope condition assessment and for the design, installation, operation, maintenance and testing of Koepe winders. The new rope design factor equation approaches a limiting economic depth of wind at shallower depths than the existing Koepe factor of safety approaches. However these older approaches æbuild-inÆ a reducing rope life with depth. The new rope design factor is therefore a more consistent way to select Koepe ropes and to evaluate economic trade-offs between Koepe and conventional double-drum or Blair winding systems.

In an earlier paper(l) details of a laboratory method of extracting and separating tantalum and columbium oxides from tantalite have been given. In view of the fact that Australia may have need to be self sufficient in this field it was decided to erect a pilot plant for the production of tantalum oxide in the Metallurgy School, University of Melbourne. The plant was designed for treating about 40 lb. of ore in a batch over a period of two weeks, although; because of the sectionalized nature of the process, the capacity of the plant was 40 lb. ore per week.Australia is fortunate in possessing some very rich tantalite and columbite deposits, particularly in the Pilbara District in Western Australia. The ore used in this work was obtained from a small but high grade deposit near Greenbushes, Western Australia, and consisted of lumps, weighing up to 8 lb. each, of almost pure ferro-tantalite with occasional thin veins of the very' rare' mineral stibiotantalite.The main constituents were:

Anodic stripping voltammetry is an analytical technique which has established some popularity for trace analysis of metals because of its sensitivity, selectivity and capability for simultaneous analysis of some elements. The technique can be readily adapted for field use because of its relative simplicity and low power requirements. This paper describes a relatively new instrument, the Portable Digital Voltammeter, developed by CSIRO, which utilises the glassy carbon electrode in a novel cell design and provides parts per billion (ug/L) sensitivity in an instrument which can be field operated. Ten elements, Zn, Cd, Tl, Pb, Cu, Sb, Bi, Hg, As and Au can be routinely analysed. Many of these elements are of interest to the mining industry, and to exploration geochemistry in particular. Case histories where the instrument has been successfully employed for stream and stream sediment analysis of Cu and Pb, for soil surveys of Cu and Au, and for Au in stream sediments and drill chips indicate there are advantages in having on-site data, during Exploration.

The Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) in Queensland, Australia is a Sub-level Caving operation that started production below the previously mined open pit at a depth of 535m. Current Production mining has progressed to a depth of 730m, with planned production mining to extend down to at least 1000m below surface. The inclined nature and geometry of the orebody combined with geological structures provides for challenging mining conditions. Over several years, Ernest Henry Mine has introduced measures to improve outcomes based on observations, monitoring and data analysis. As mining progresses deeper, EHM will continue to proactively take steps to ensure future outcomes are anticipated and mining can continue safely and uninterrupted. The focus of this paper is on the changes in seismic- and stress-driven behaviour of the rockmass experienced at EHM, the ground control measures implemented, and the anticipated future conditions and controls required. æConventional wisdomÆ believes that fine particles have low flotation recoveries. Plant size û recovery graphs often have the classic æhillÆ shape û high recovery in the mid sizes and low recovery at the fine and coarse ends. Yet if mineral liberation is poor, low fines recovery may be because you don't grind fine enough! This apparent paradox is explained by the old concept of æsand/slimesÆ circuits, which recognises the different flotation needs of fine and coarse particles. This concept is overlooked in the push for simpler circuits and larger equipment. Most plants now treat all particles together in a wide size-distribution. Reagent conditions are set for the dominant coarser particles, so fines are starved of collector. Worse still if there are significant midsized composites û often these have to be rejected in cleaning to achieve target concentrate grade. But the conditions which reject mid-size composites û collector starvation and high depressants û also reject fine liberated particles. In fact, fines flotation can be excellent when flotation chemistry is tailored to fines.

Two major types of economic secondary iron ores occur in the banded iron formation (BIF)-rich Hamersley Province of the Pilbara, Western Australia:dominant BIF-hosted bedded iron deposits (BID)detrital ore deposits (DID sensu lato), which are mainly hosted in the three province-wide Cenozoic sequences that include coeval non-ore sediments and comprise:a. the major Miocene, fluvial channel iron deposits (CID)b. the lesser Eocene and Pliocene detrital iron deposits (DID sensu stricto).Striking differences exist between the massive CID resources and the much smaller underlying and overlying DID. CID are essentially riverine alluvial ooidal rocks with abundant small fossil wood fragments and variable iron peloids, but with only extremely rare recognisable lithic remnants. The original matrix is typically ramifying layered goethite. Eocene DID are mainly alluvial with minor pisoids, whereas Pliocene–Quaternary DID are dominantly coarse colluvial gravels, both derived from and largely retaining the original textures of BID, hard cap or variably ferruginised surface BIF. The colluvial DID matrix is typically ferroan-aluminous soil, resulting in canga where replaced by goethite, which may be dehydrated to hematite by exposure. The Cenozoic deposits occur in two dominant geomorphological environments: the southern Marra Mamba to Brockman Iron Formation strike valleys containing all three Cenozoic sequences and the much later northern Brockman Iron Formation plateau valleys that include only the Miocene and Pliocene sequences. The Cenozoic detritals formed in different climatic regimes, with an extended dry period forming a prominent province-wide dehydrated carapace on the Eocene DID. The Miocene ‘optimum’ followed with its thick scrub-covered deep regolith that produced the fossil wood-rich CID and was succeeded by the arid cool period of the Oakover limestone/calcrete. A major renewal of exposure and erosion in the Pliocene resulted in the extensive iron gravels of the Pliocene–Quaternary.CITATION:Morris, R C, 2015. "Water is increasingly being recognised as a material business risk that many companies are still not well-equipped to deal with. Despite a raft of water-risk focused initiatives, methodologies and guidelines, the challenge of managing the strong link between the technical and operational water issues, along with the growing external challenges and interests in water, remain a significant risk to a companyÆs ability to deliver value.This paper provides an overview of the key lessons learnt from ERMÆs experience of working with companies across a range of water sensitive industry sectors, in particular, the mining and oil and gas sectors, to develop and implement practical approaches to manage business critical water risk. These examples highlight the importance of managing water risk by linking technical and operational aspects of water management - with the longer term strategic and social license aspects. Four key ingredients were identified that are central to providing companies with a leading edge in the successful mitigation of water risk: understanding and evaluating water risk including the technical and operational aspects of water management, plus the longer term strategic and social aspects articulating a strong business case that prioritises water risks and their financial exposure to the organisation constructing a clear roadmap that practically links the water strategy objectives with on-the-ground implementation and action building capacity in the organisation to manage, engage and coordinate on water to mitigate risk.CITATION:Ringwood, K and Tang, A, 2013. The optimisation of an open pit mine can be broadly split into two stages, the first being the ultimate pit optimisation (and subsequent stage designs), and the second being schedule optimisation. Macroeconomic uncertainty clearly impacts on both however interrelationships do also exist. Generally, the opportunity exists for the ultimate pit to be revised during each planning cycle, however when this reprieve is removed the uncertainty for the underlying business increases. As one example, the introduction of an in-pit waste dump can be seen to significantly limit the option to revise the ultimate pit. When in this situation there are two potential risks that present: (i) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is optimistic, and too large of a pit is selected resulting in waste being mined which uncovers material not of a significant value to deliver a profit; (ii) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is pessimistic, too small of an ultimate pit is selected, and ore of realisable economic value left behind. Deep hard rock underground mines tend to experience high stress as such drives exhibit dynamic responses attributed to a rock burst variant (strainburst). This dynamic behaviour is difficult to predict, and every effort is made to devise the appropriate dynamic support system for its associated failure restraint. This paper outlines the back analysis and the support scheme design for an underground decline that exhibited damage from a dynamic strainburst occurrence. It employs a decline section that experienced a dynamically loaded strainburst that initiated rock fragment ejections. The procedure involves a preliminary structural analysis, a seismic intensity measure, and a rock mass simulation to determine the static stress concentration and ground support system response. The numerical simulation is conducted in FLAC3D which employs the advanced strain-softening IMASS constitutive model governed by two Hoek–Brown (HB) bounding yield surfaces. To account for the post-peak brittleness response associated with strainburst the plastic strain multiplier () is adjusted to 0.0 < < 1.0. The back-analysis shows that the occurrence was initiated by a low-intensity seismic wave that superimposed an extra stress component to the initial static stress which triggered rock fragment ejections. Additionally, the appropriate support scheme comprised of Weldmesh, Fibrecrete, static (split set) and yieldable (Kinloc) reinforcements is recommended and implemented. Thereafter, the bolt’s efficiency is evaluated based on the axial force and elongation capacities and then compared with the published bolt performance data. The evaluation results show that the maximum bolt axial force (0.1 per cent) and elongation (0.006 per cent) are below the designed capacity and rupture strain.

A stibnite concentrate from Golden Spec (WA) was subjected to a series of tests involving high pressure cyanidation and pressure oxidation followed by conventional cyanidation. The concentrate, whose gold content was 18.1 g/t, yielded only eight per cent of the gold when leached directly by a standard 24-hour cyanidation test. The recovery was increased to only 15 per cent when pressure cyanided under the following conditions: ambient temperature, 2000 kPa oxygen pressure, two hour retention time and 30 per cent w/w solids pulp density. This poor response to pressure cyanidation emphasised the refractoriness of the material. Evidence of the fine distribution of the gold through the concentrate, from measurements of the particle sizing distribution and the gold analyses of the individual fractions, also suggested that this concentrate was highly refractory. Pressure oxidation of the concentrate at elevated temperatures followed by cyanidation yielded recoveries as high as 94 per cent. However a preoxidation treatment under the following conditions was necessary: 230¦C, 2000 kPa oxygen pressure for a period of four hours.

Ranger Uranium Mine, surrounded by Kakadu National Park is located in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics, 250 km east of Darwin, Northern Territory. A trial landform (TLF), measuring approximately 200 m by 400 m (8 ha) was constructed during late 2008 and early 2009 by Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), adjacent to the northwestern wall of the tailings storage facility at the Ranger Mine. A collaborative research program involving the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (eriss) and ERA, has been underway to measure long-term (five to ten year) rainfall, run-off, sediment and solute losses, seepage and vegetation establishment on the TLF (Saynor et al, 2012; Lowry et al, 2014). This paper reports on bed load losses from four erosion plots built on the TLF. These were achieved by physically isolating approximately 30 × 30 m areas from the surrounding landform on three sides with sidewalls along with an open polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe on the downslope side. Each plot was instrumented with a range of sensors. Two plots, 1 and 2 were constructed on waste rock material, while plots 3 and 4 were constructed on waste rock mixed with approximately 30 per cent lateritic material. Plots 1 and 4 had tube stock planted in early 2009, and plots 2 and 3 were initially planted by direct seeding in July 2009 and were infill planted with tube stock in January 2011.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Erskine, W D, 2016. The Lanfranchi Nickel mine is located approximately 48 km south of Kambalda in Western Australia. Mining first commenced in the mid-1970s under the previous owner, Western Mining Corporation Ltd. After two years on care and maintenance, Panoramic Resources (previously known as Sally Malay Mining Ltd) purchased the operation in November 2004. The site currently produces approximately 10?000 tonnes of nickel metal annually from approximately 430?000 tonnes of ore. The Ore is mined from four main orebodies; Deacon, Helmut South, Lanfranchi and Schmitz. The Helmut South orebody is situated approximately 790 m below surface and extends to a resource depth of 940 m. Horizontal thickness of the orebody ranges from 10 m to 45 m in width, with the average being 30 m. Previous mining at the Lanfranchi operations specifically the Helmut orebody, had a history of seismic activity. When Panoramic Resources acquired the operation it was decided that seismicity was going to be an issue and therefore a mining method needed to be selected that could effectively manage this potential risk. The dip of the orebody is quite shallow at 45º, with a 30º plunge to the south . The hanging-wall comprises of very weak ultramafics. Due to these factors the orebody posed several mining challenges. To safely and effectively mine the Helmut South orebody in the Lanfranchi Nickel mine, underhand cut and fill mining was selected as the most appropriate mining method. Paste fill comprising of cemented gold tailings was the backfill of choice. This paper is intended to convey some of the key learnings from the use of a mining method that has not been commonly practiced in Australia.

Fires are a common and recurrent unwanted event in the operation of open pit mines. In most cases, the causes of events such as fires are already æknownÆ but are either overlooked or not fully addressed in planning. Ongoing rapid growth of the global mining industry is creating a scarcity of skilled personnel, and high turnover within operations. This contributes to loss of corporate memory in risk management activities. RISKGATE« is an online risk management system designed to support and assist in the analysis of priority unwanted events in Australian coal mining operations. Funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), RISKGATE« is a knowledge management program that delivers best-practice controls for unwanted events and assists operations in staying abreast of emergent risks and threats. RISKGATE« content has been primarily developed from an association of industry experts, and enriched with input from additional academic and technological resources. In mining operations, RISKGATE« provides a continuum of knowledge and best practice for risk identification, assessment and management. RISKGATE« will assist companies in improving safety performance, operational efficiency, operating practice and training.
