The criteria developed for the Argyle Diamond Mine process plant control system are reviewed. The control system installed is described along with a discussion of the method of implementation adopted. The control system was extensively tested prior to instal- lation at site. This approach led to signi- ficant time savings during plant commissioning and facilitated rapid escalation of plant production. The control system has performed satisfactorily with a high level of operator acceptance and basically satisfies the criteria Developed.

Research conducted into backfill drainage at Mount Isa Mines since 1992 is described. Piping in draining backfilled scopes has been the primary cause of bulkhead failures and emphasis is placed on research into the piping mechanism. Laboratory and in situ tests aimed at understanding the piping mechanism have been conducted and the results are presented. A case history of piping in a draining bench scope fill mass is described and a technique for reducing the potential for bulkhead failures in hench stopes is presented. Hydraulic fill is produced by standard cycloning of tailings and the overflow (reject material) is sent to thickeners prior to placement in the tailings dams. Research into the partial introduction of thickener underflow into the backfill system and its influence on backfill drainage is also descrihed.

Fundamental rheological properties of slowly settling mineral slurries are reviewed. Slurry flow is discussed in terms of observed shear stress-shear rate behaviour. Particular emphasis is placed on establishing procedures for scale-up and design. Flow property measure- ments on red mud, a waste product from the Bayer alumina process, are presented and used to illustrate recommended design procedures.

"Mine-derived sedimentation in rivers can have significant impacts on the processes and features of the receiving environment and impact on communities reliant on this environment. However, identifying and quantifying the contribution of mine-derived sediment to the receiving environment can be complex. This is particularly the case in remote environments and where little/no baseline assessments have been undertaken. One approach that can be used involves sediment fingerprinting, whereby a unique tracer is identified within the mine-derived sediment to discriminate between mine- and non-mine derived sediment sources downstream. The technique typically involves sampling of sediment at upstream, control and impact sites and sites within the mine deposit. Laboratory analyses are run on all the samples to determine whether the chemical signature (eg presence/concentration of specific metals) differs between each group of samples. In complex environments where the mine-derived signature may be difficult to detect from a basic review of the data, or where sampling constraints may limit the number of samples for analyses, statistical methods can be used to help identify sediment groups. In tunnel construction or other underground construction, a detailed knowledge of the rock mass ahead of the face is essential for both safety and efficiency of work. Many tunnel collapses have been reported to occur because of lack of appropriate information, such as the geological conditions ahead of the tunnel face. One of the methods which can identify rock mass conditions is the application of drill monitoring data obtained from blasting drill holes, which can detect abrupt and unexpected changes in ground conditions, geological structure and the mechanical and physical properties of rock mass. This paper presents a new approach to how drill performance parameters can be used for prediction of geological conditions ahead of tunnel face. The predictions are based on monitoring the drill parameters of instantaneous advance speed, torque and tool pressure. In order to assess conditions ahead of tunnel face, tunnel seismic profiling (TSP) and a horizontal boring investigation were undertaken and the obtained data compared to the drilling data. The predicted results using drilling performance parameters correlated well with geological conditions ahead of tunnel face.

The patented "Epytensic" pump of Minnovation Ltd, a multiple piston pump, is used widely on shearer loaders and by partial high pressure watcr jet cutting strategically in relation to cutter picks not only improves cutting rates, but saves power and increases the life of gearboxes and picks, as well as improving dust suppression. The "Face Side Pump", also a piston pump, located on the ranging arm gearhead has advantages over gateroad pumps and shearer body pumps. The "Extraction Drum", hydraulic air mover system, linked with the above innovations and high pressure water, have further advantages in methane and dust removal. Some modifications providing these systems need workshop applications but most are possible underground with minimal changes to shearer profiles and advantages of minimising hosing, along with the other advantages stated.

The geology of an area in north-western New South Wales, bounded by the South Australian and Queensland borders, latitude 32° S. and longitude 14° E. is discussed.The area involved includes sixteen 1:250,000 standard military sheets and covers approximately 96,000 sq. miles.The geology of the Willyama Complex is not dealt with but a small area of metasediments previously included in this unit is separated and a possible correlation with Precambrian to the east is suggested. Torrowangee Group sediments are described and the problem of nomenclature using a glacial implication is raised.Nine areas of proven Lower Palaeozoic sediments are considered and their relationship to the boundaries of the Bancannia Trough outlined. It is possible that some exposures not yet substantiated by fossil evidence may prove to be Lower Palaeozoic rather than Precambrian in age.The sediments of the Lachlan Geosyncline in the area of the Cobar massif are described and new concepts on the age and distribution of some of the established stratigraphic units are introduced. The absence of rocks of Middle Silurian age probably indicates the time of a major orogeny in this area.Lithology, thickness, and distribution of the Upper Devonian sediments is considered and some of the more recently found fish plate localities are listed.Mesozoic sediments occur in isolated areas of Lower Jurassic age and in the Great Australian (Artesian) Basin. A four-fold subdivision of sediments of the basin has been possible in some areas but lack of sub-surface information at present, precludes the possibility of correlation with the type sections in Queensland.Units in the Cainozoic are subdivided and a five fold subdivision of the Quaternary, at present being used throughout western New South Wales, is described.

A critical appraisal of the wide variety of processes used in the pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals shows that there is a strong physico-chemical and, in particular thermodynamic, basis for the variety. Based on this, a simple classif- ication scheme has been developed which makes it possible to understand the methods for extracting individual metals and non-metals pyrometallurgically and to assess which are the more attractive routes. The analysis presented shows why there are essentially two broad routes for pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals; viz., the reduce- refine and the refine-reduce routes. Halides have the role in pyrometall- urgical processing of producing pure compounds for subsequent reduction. The criteria which determine the selection of reduction method for oxide raw materials and intermediate halides (e.g., use of carbon, hydrogen, a more reactive metal or electrowinning) are examined critically in the paper. The treatment of sulfide raw materials is considered also, particularly the criterion for smelting sulfides directly to the metal.

A relationship is predicted between oxidic nickel in slag, oxygen in matte and Ni/Fe ratio in matte after the examination of thirty sets of contiguous matte and slag samples taken from industrial nickel smelters. Oxidic nickel in slag is found to increase with increase in oxygen content of matte of constant Ni/Fe ratio, and it is proposed that the relationship may be used to predict nickel solubility in slag from a knowledge of matte composition alone.

A major problem in the continuous casting of aluminium killed strip steel is the incidence of black and grey lines in the strip surface caused by the alumina inclusions. One place for limiting the number of alumina inclusions is by providing favourable fluid flow conditions in the ladle so that the inclusions float out to the surface or adhere to the ladle wall. In laboratory equipment 20 kg of steel was melted in an alumina crucible of 14 cm diameter in an induction furnace. Deoxidation was carried out while the melt was constantly stirred by argon bubbling. Bubble frequencies were measured at the lance tip using a microphone technique. High speed cine photo- graphy was incorporated to measure melt top surface velocities. Experimental results indicate that the rate of removal of inclusions is a function of both the gas input and the power input. However due to unfavourable surface area to volume ratio, reoxidation of the melt took place. Some other experimental difficulties in working at high temperatures are also discussed such as lance design, melting arrangement and sampling techniques.

Truck/shovel operations constitute 50 - 60 per cent of the cost of open pit mining operations. Mining companies, therefore, are constantly seeking to close the gap between actual truck/shovel productive capacity and maximum potential truck/shovel capacity. This paper analyses the performance of a mixed truck/shovel fleet in an open cut coal mine in Australia. It analyses operating delays, and proposes a novel graphical means of determining truck-limited or shovel-limited operations. A goal seeking algorithm is advanced in order to maximise truck/shovel match factors (MF) and hence optimise fleet productivity.

A research programme sponsored through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association investigated two aspects of mine aerodynamics on model scale. These were aero- dynamic losses in (a) shaft/airway intersections and (b) losses created by mine cages moving in a combined haulage/ventilation shaft. The shaft/airway intersections studied included base and intermediate levels for both upcast and downcast. shafts, with one to four rectangular airways intersecting a circular shaft. Changes in intersection geometry were limited to the installation of 45¦ conical brow cutoffs of varying size and the addition of simple flow control devices. The relative air- flows between the airways and the downstream shaft were varied over a range employed in Australian mining practice. In general, experiments revealed that a small brow cutoff was significantly better than none at all, and a simple device such as a cone can reduce losses and improve flow stability at an intersection. The mine cage studies determined the effect on aerodynamic loss of cage area blockage, height/length ratio, openings in cage walls and surface roughness due to external structural members. B Lens Main is a scheelite orebody with an average dip of approximately 15¦ and thickness ranging from 1.5 to 6.0 m. The orebody is overlain by a banded section of ore and waste which tends to slab off if left unsupported. It was originally planned to mine a large portion of this orebody by room and pillar methods, with existing diesel trackless equipment. This, however, proved unsuitable for a number of reasons and the smaller scale method of slot stoping with hand machines and scrapers was employed. The following major problems were encountered. 1. The method was new to the mine and the work force, and had to be commenced quickly using existing or easily obtainable equipment. This is gradually being overcome by training, modification of procedures and introduction of more suitable equipment. 2. The slabbing from the hanging wall had to be controlled, either by support or by mining this low grade section and accepting the resultant dilution. This has been approached in a number of ways, depending on conditions and the method will have to be further modified as different conditions are encountered in new areas.

In recent years, with the fast development of China's steel industry, the demand for iron ore has increased markedly. The new technologies in iron ore dressing in China are very effective in processing haematite and other difficult to dress iron ores. The iron ore grade and recovery rate has been improved. This result alleviates the difficulty in iron ore supply in China.

With the progress of modern mining engineering, one of the features of which is the mining from greater depths and the hoisting of greatly increased loads, it becomes a matter of increasing importance that the engineer should be able to determinewith some degree of precision the character of the strains on the hauling rope. But a wire rope is a complex structure; it is made up of spirally-twisted strands, which in turn are composed of spirally-twisted wires, and it is not particularly easy to say exactly what happens when this "doubly-twisted structure is wound round a drum or over a pulley.. The difficulty has been generally evaded in ordinary practice by the simple device of adopting a large factor of safety for the rope-usually from 8 to 10-a factor which experience has shown is sufficiently large to cover the bending strains set "up when the rope is passed over pulleys of the sizes commonly considered appropriate.When, however, we add the stress due to the bending of the rope to the stress produced by" the direct pull, we find that the actual factor of safety is usually more nearly 4 than 10, and frequently the bending stresses in the rope are so large compared with the simple tensile stresses that their neglect may easily lead to disastrous results when dealing with problems a little out of the common run.
