The Patawarta Diapir, located in the northern Flinders Ranges (South Australia), has intruded into late Proterozoic Wilpena Group sedimentary rocks. The diapir contains disrupted blocks of a wide variety of rock types, most of which can be correlated with the Lower Callanna Beds of Willouran age, in a matrix of predominantly carbonate and siltstone breccia. Mafic rocks in the diapir appear to predate intrusion of the diapir. As with many other diapirs in the Flinders Ranges, copper mineralization is present in the diapir and occurs as narrow veins consisting essentially of carbonate with chalcopyrite and pyrite that formed after diapiric intrusion.Fluid inclusion studies demonstrate that the mineralizing fluid was a Na-Ca-K-Cl brine; probably derived by expulsion of interstitial water following emplacement of the diapir, with dissolution of evaporites within the Callanna Beds sediments and enrichment in copper by reaction with these sediments and associated basic igneous rocks. Mineral assemblages combined with fluid inclusion and geochemical data indicate a possible environment of vein formation of T ÿ 165°C, pH ÿ 4.3 ± 0.9 and log fO2 ÿ -47.3 ± 0.5. Sulphur isotope analyses indicate d34Sfluid ÿ 10 per mil, suggesting evaporites in the Proterozoic sediments as the major source of the sulphur but with some additional sulphur from an igneous source, possibly leached from the malic rocks of the diapir.

LANDSAT imagery has renewed interest in linear features first recognised by E. S. Hills in a physiographic model of Australia. Certain of these lineaments are aligned with structures which control mineralisation.Lineament guidelines are potentially useful in many poorlyexposed areas if they can be recognised early enough in exploration and drilling programs leading to mine development.A case history based on the Charters Towers Gold Field indicates that lineament guidelines can be established early enough to guide development ofnew mines. The position of the Charters Towers Lineament was known as early as 1956. Subsequently, more detailed publications identified and classified associated lineaments which provide intersections correlated with gold occurrences. The discovery of a significant orebody at one of the most prominent lineament intersections came in 1975. Mine drilling has confirmed the influence ofintersecting structural trends indicated by lineaments but not by previous regional mapping.Recent gold discoveries south of Charters Towers lie in a grid of prominent lineaments. The development of mines about Charters Towers will provide additional understanding of relationships between centres of mineralisation and lineament intersections. This understanding may in future be sufficient to encourage exploration for a new generation of concealed gold deposits in northeastern Queensland.

Of the optimization techniques proposed in determining the optimum open pit limits, dynamic programming and graph theory have proved most successful. However, publications on these two methods lack a certain amount of rigour and clarity in exposition. Certain ideas in the methods have been clarified and additional features introduced in order to make them more sensitive to practical applications. A case study in the form of an application of these ideas on data from a producing mine is presented and discussed.

The challenge facing the engineering provider is to calculate throughput rates when faced with disparate specific energies calculated by different testing methodologies. Typically, an ownerÆs team would expect that the throughput calculations be checked using more than one method, therefore it is inevitable that there will be differences, based on which methodology is used. This engineering challenge is exacerbated by the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing with or without high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) as the second stage, or second stage pebble crusher product reporting to the ball milling circuit, etc.This paper is a companion to the paper first presented at SAG 2011, which showed that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills in single-stage SAG milling (SSS) circuits, SAG and ball mill circuits (SAB) or SAG and ball mill circuits with pebble crushers (SABC). This paper presents how the Bond Indices have been used to calculate ball mill specific energies, and therefore throughput rates, for SAG mill based circuits. Once the ball milling specific energy is known, tower mill and vertimill energy requirements can also be calculated. The Pike River Coal Company is set to develop the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of:   +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

Experimental petrology may be used to accurately constrain PTX conditions in order to calibrate and understand geologic processes. This method may be used to answer postulated questions, by recreating known geologic conditions and observing changes in the experimental charges. The purpose of this project was to determine the eutectic composition and temperature in the ternary system PbS-FeS-ZnS ¦ (Ag2S), at ambient and elevated pressures and elucidate if the sulfides of the Broken Hill orebody may have been partially molten during highgrade (granulite facies) metamorphism. The study determined the eutectic temperature and composition in the system PbS-FeS-ZnS to be 800¦2¦C and 62.5% PbS, 30.5%FeS, 7% ZnS respectively, at one atmosphere, and the eutectic temperature at 27 kbars was found to be 960¦C¦10¦C, with a eutectic composition enriched in ZnS relative to the one atmosphere eutectic. the addition of lwt.% Ag2S to the system depresses the eutectic temperature to 772¦2¦C at 1 atmosphere and below 810¦5¦C at 5 kbars. The conditions of peak metamotphism for the cental and southern areas of the Broken Hill Block, New South Wales, Australia , lie above the solidus of the PbS-FeS-ZnS-Ag2S system, strongly suggesting that partial melting occurred in the orebody.

The Karangahake gold-silver deposit is located 11 km west of Waihi in the southern part of the Hauraki Goldfield. Historically it was the second largest bullion producer in the goldfield with a past production (1882 - 1944) of 126.712 tonnes of gold-silver bullion (Au:Ag ratio of 1:3.3) from 1 142 315 tonnes of ore grading 27.4 g/tonne gold equivalents.

Validation and Simulation of Optimised Compressive Crushing Ores and aggregates are used in countless applications all around in the society. The frequent and escalating usage of these natural resources requires efforts aimed at not only making do with what is available, but also undertaking actions to improve the production yield and the processes involved. This strive to improve the performance and efficiency of existing crushers and crushing processes has brought about research concerning optimisation of crushing plants as well as theoretical optimisation of crushing. Previous work shows that different applications and different materials require different compressive crushing in order to accomplish a theoretically optimal size distribution. These optimisation results, obtained by genetic evolutionary algorithms and evaluated with so called fitness functions, convey the theoretically optimal number of compressions and their corresponding compression ratios. Presented in this paper are thus some laboratory crushing tests, which are conducted in order to validate a set of previously optimised crushing sequences. More specifically, interparticle crushing sequences are carried out in a Piston-die testing equipment, where samples are sieved between each compression. The subsequent analysis of these results shows good correlation with model predictions, which combined with a comparative study between presented optimisation results and measured data from a real crusher indicate a significant potential for improvement. However, before redesigning crushers according to what is theoretically optimal, the resulting impact as well as the effects on the outcome of a crushing plant must be examined. Crushing plant simulations using the software PlantDesigner« are consequently performed. Models of existing crushers are altered, resulting in changed particle size distributions from some of the crushers in a crushing plant. Thence, it is concluded that significant gains can be made in terms of capacity, process yield and energy consumption.

And the compulsory purchase of land and the minerals beneath it by the State or a body approved by the State (Fitzgerald, 1952) was a principle well established and enforced in practice over a hundred years ago, when such powers became a practical necessity during the period of railway building in Britain and elsewhere:The acquisition of mineral properties which stand in the way of public construction projects still goes on. But in recent years nationalization is being increasingly undertaken as part of the planned use of national resources, for the closer regulation of economic activities, or merely, so it would seem, as a matter of political expediency or national pride. For instance, the unsevered coal in Britain came under State ownership in 1938 in an attempt to simplify a complex pattern of freehold titles which were impedingplanned mining operations. Later, unsevered minerals became a factor in negotiations arising under various town and country planning acts. The acquisition of the Rio Tinto mines by the Spanish Government implies political aspirations. Previous methods for measuring the flow of solids in Jnrdraulic conveying have not considered the important effects of slip velocity and particle concentration. In this paper an extension of the method proposed byShirato et al. (J. Chem. Engng. 'Japan, 1: 164-167) for determining mass flow in a vertical conduit is outlined.The present method consists of measuring' the volumetric flow of the slurry (by a magnetic flow meter for instance) and the density of the slurry in two pipe sections of different diameters. Effects of variation of slip withparticle concentration, not previously considered, are allowed.Problems involved in estimating the density of a slurry from differential pressure measurement are discussed.The major problem is the uncertainties in estimating frictional losses due to the wall in two-phase flows. The greater reliability of a more "direct" technique, such as by 'Y-ray absorption, for measuring solid concentration is emphasized.

Self-cleaning fluidised bed heat exchangers have demonstrated unparalleled performance internationally for the implementation of indirect heat transfer in severely fouling fluid environments. Recent advances in equipment design have increased the scope of application to include indirect heat transfer in slurry environments, including fouling, scaling and viscous slurries. The ingenious configuration of recirculated cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube heat exchangers provides the ability to solve heat transfer problems that arise as a consequence of tube-side fouling during indirect heat transfer to process fluids or slurries. In most cases, the cleaning particles consist of chopped metal wire, however other process-specific materials may be used.

For its Hellyer project, Aberfoyle sought to establish a high degree of confidence in all aspects of the feasibility study. Accurate capital and operating cost estimates were an integral and essential part of the study. They were crucial to the evaluation of investment returns and competitive cost position. Both the capital and operating cost estimates were based on the comprehensive data available from exploratory mine development, pilot plant operation, detailed engineering design, and Aberfoyle's experience in the area. One of the principal project objectives was to maximise operating productivity and efficiencies and this created capital cost alternatives which needed thorough cost-benefit assessment. The estimated capital cost for construction and development was $90 million, and the project was completed virtually on time for $80 million. The first year's experience indicated that operating costs would settle to well within 10% of the estimates.

A general description of the geology of the Southern Coalfield is given. The relationship between the Illawarra Coal Measures, the overlying Triassic and the underlying Upper Marine Series, of Permian age as are the Coal Measures, is briefly explained and thestratigraphy of each is described. The eight coal seams are then treated in slightly more detail as to their thickness, quality, areas of distribution and best occurrences.In the last few years each of the authors has been concerned with one phase or other of the stTucture of the field in detail or in mining operations with the result that it is now possible to name a number of monoclines, anticlines, domes and synclines defined in detail. A minor quantitative study has been made of faults and dykes with regard to form, direction intensity and inter-relationship. It seems probable that with the further collection of data a more detailed study in these matters will be of considerable value to the economy of mining in the Southern Coalfield.

he Wyalong goldfields were discovered in September, 1893, Messrs. Neeld and Sons, owners of the principal mine, being the pioneer prospectors. During the earliest days of the field the ore was sent to Barmedman, a distance of eighteen miles, for treatment at a battery there. The field rapidly increased in importance, and it was not long before a public battery was established on the spot. After some considerable quantity of ore was treated by this process, it became apparent that battery treatment was quite unsuitable for the richer ores, involving, as it did, considerable loss in the tailings. Recognition of this fact led to the erection, in 1895, of plants by the Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, owned by Mr. Walter Sully, for treatment by their processes; followed, at a later date, by Messrs. Neeld and Sons Chlorination Works. The Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, after a delay of twelve months in the erection of their plants, have since catered continuously up to the present time for the requirements of the field.Their plant consists of a No. 3 Gates' rock·breaker, a revolving dryer, a No. 5 Krupp mill, revolving roasting furnace with finishing hearth, two chlorination vats of 20 tons capacity each, "nine cyanide vats of 30 to 100 tons capacity, two Wheeler pans and three chlorine generators. The ores are purchased outright on assay at a fixed scale of charges, and treated by the owner of the works on his own account.

The achievement of high availability of the Grey River Gold Mining Limited's alluvial gold dredge is a tortuous task which will rely upon the dedication of all staff employed at Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML). The persistent adoption of new technology and better operating procedures, combined with a strong commitment to preventative and predictive maintenance, is necessary. The Grey River Gold Mining Limited alluvial gold dredge is operating in a relatively low grade alluvial gold deposit and hence relies on a high throughput of ore to be profitable. To achieve the required high material throughput the dredge incorporates an overburden removal system which operates simultaneously with a conventional bucketline system.   The overburden system incorporates a cutter wheel and suction pump configuration which is dedicated to removing the low grade (5 mg gold/m3 gravel) overburden. The bucketline conveys the richer grade payzone gravels (up to 890 mg/m3 gravel) to the recovery plant mounted onboard the dredge. The horizon for the overburden system approximates 15 m and the payzone terminates at the interface of the old man rock and the alluvial gravels at a variable depth averaging 22 m.   From a mechanical engineering perspective the dredge is a machine comprised of two materials handling systems which are controlled by Operations Staff and electronic process control systems.   The availability of such a materials handling system is a function of four variables: 1. The environment that the machine operates in. 2. The ability of the people operating the machine. 3. The design of the mechanisms, the configuration that they are grouped in and the effectiveness of the process control systems which control the mechanisms. 4. The procedures utilised to predict the performance of the machines and the skill of staff to analyse that data and carry out effective maintenance.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.Low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation at Ridge Mountain occurs within the Oligocene to Miocene volcanic rocks comprising andesite, porphyritic dacite and diatreme breccia. A diatreme breccia complex with a NE–SW elongated orientation covers an area of 3.0 × 1.7 km. Four main stages of mineralisation were identified, comprising: E–W- to NW–SE-trending quartz-chalcedony veins with disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite and gold. N–S- to NNE–SSW-trending breccia veins with quartz matrix and disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. NE–SW-trending quartz and calcite veins with disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. ESE–WNW- to ENE–WSW-trending quartz veins with disseminated pyrite. This stage is only mineralisation that is hosted by diatreme breccia and clearly postdates.Quartz veins of the first, third and fourth stage are less than 2 m wide. Only breccia veins of the second stage are up to 10 m wide. Gold is present in all stages as microscopic inclusions in quartz and sporadically in pyrite. Macroscopic gold can be seen in the first and second mineralisation stages. Gold commonly occurs in association with sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite in the second and third mineralisation stages.CITATION:Kucera, J, 2015. IN the recent monograph on Broken Hill, N.S.W., by E. C. Andrews,* two independent petrological reports appear as Appendices 1 and n, by W. R. Browne and F. L. Stillwell respectively. In these considerable differences of opinion occur. Andrews contributes to some of the questions at issue, but no analytical review of the differences appears in the body of the report. Their development may invite question, and the following notes have been prepared partly in explanation and partly as a summary of some of the divergences. The soope of Browne's report extends over the whole district of Broken Hill, while Stillwell's deals with the rocks within 25 chains of the main lode. The more difficult and important rock-types occur in both areas, raising similar questions. In both cases observations extended beyond the limits of the prescribed areas. Broadly, Browne faces his problem as a study of a series of primary igneous rooks, acid and basio, whioh are intrusive into a series of sillimanite gneisses. The development of the sillimanite gneisses is regarded as belonging to an earlier period than the intrusion of the igneous rooks, while the gneissio structures of the latter are features which are incidental to their orystallization, and are not acquired subsequent to their consolidation. He finally produoes a picture in which his views of igneous injection and differentiation takes a prominent place. One direct result is the claim that three separate periods of metamorphism have oocurred in the Broken Hill area. Stillwell primarily examines the rooks as schists and gneisses since their present dominating features have been acquired during metamorphism. The effort is made to understand suoh differences as might arise from differing conditions of metamorphism upon rocks of similar and different oonstitution. The aim is to divest the rocks of those oharaoters which are due to metamorphism before approaching the questions of intrusive relatio'nships between igneous rocks andsediments.
