Regular monitoring for methane gas is required near working faces in gassy underground mines where the potential for methane ignitions is greatest. However, high concentrations of methane can also accumulate outby the face where methane levels are monitored less frequently. Wearing a personal methane monitor equipped with an alarm could protect persons working in these outby areas from injury or death due to methane ignitions. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted studies to evaluate methanometers that could be used as person-wearable monitors. For the present study, seven different person-wearable monitors that are not currently approved for underground use were evaluated. This paper describes test procedures used to evaluate performance of methane monitors that could be used underground for continuous personal monitoring of methane. The information in this report provides data that allows the reader to make side-by side comparisons of these instruments.

The Selective Precipitation (Basics) Process is a means of controlling impurities such as the ions of Mn, Mg, and Cl as well as sulphate and water, in an electrolytic zinc plant circuit. This is achieved by precipita- ting zinc selectively as a basic zinc sulphate from a portion of impure circuit solution. The impurities remain in the solution, which can be discarded, while the zinc, substantially free of impurities, is returned to the main circuit by using the precipitate as a neutral- ising reagent. A description of the process and its development to a full scale operating plant at the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited is Presented.

The effect of the presence of ore pulp on the adsorption rate of gold on activated carbon has been studied. A substantial reduction in the rate occurs when the pulp is present. The reduction in rate appears to be caused by two effects: permanent carbon pore blocking by ore particles and temporary shielding of the carbon particle surface, slowing gold access to the carbon due to the physical presence of the fine pulp. There is no significant effect arising from the presence of a pulp viscosity modifier even for conditions when mass transport dictates the loading rate of carbon in clear Solution.

To discuss this relationship both the problems of the mechanisms of ore accumulation and the origin and cause of volcanism must be faced. Volcanic activity is associated with hydrothermal activity but the causes of volcanism are inseparable from the problems of the origin of magmas generally. To be more in accord with the inevitable reaction between water and silicates at high temperature, it is suggested that reconsidera- tion be given to the role of water in magmas such that our general concept of magmas becomes one of hot hydrous pastes rather than melts with water in them. It is claimed that a general concept of magmas as gelatinous hydrosilicate masses is a far better assumption because the rheological and diffusive properties of such materials enables an adequate explanation of a greater number of observations. It is consistent with the mergence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and requires low to modest temperatures at the time of liquifaction allowing convergence with mobilised and disturbed sediment masses. Extensive reserves of kaolin of the type suitable for use as a high quality paper coating exist on the Weipa Peninsula. In 1986 a commercial processing plant was constructed to produce 100 000 tonnes per annum of coating quality kaolin targetted principally for export. A number of processing difficulties have limited the production capability of the plant. The prime area being the pressure filtration operation with achieved cycle times being around 50-60% of design. The rate determining steps being press filling, press unloading and filter cloth washing. This paper details and summarises testwork and results from our attempts at decreasing the filtration cycle time.

Like many industries the coal mining industry has, since the beginning of this century, undergone many changes. Technological advances and the increasing demand for fossil fuels have introduced new mining methods and techniques which allow the extraction of thicker and deeper coal seams at higher rates of production. Most new methods of mining (or for that matter any other processes) introduce problems which the engineers of the industry are expected to face and resolve. Unfortunately, spontaneous combustion has plagued the coal mining industry since the first attempts to mine coal, and is no doubt partly responsible for the reputation that coal mining is a hazardous industry. The financial loss and toll of human lives due to the occurrence of spontaneous combustion of coal in coal mines is enormous, if not incalculable. Its occurrence today is less likely to claim lives, due to both improved methods of working and in the detection of spontaneous combustion sites.

Carbonation of reinforced concrete is a potential durability issue for vehicular tunnels. This is particularly the case where elevated carbon dioxide concentrations exist and when the design life is 100 years or more. The process of carbonation can result in loss of passive protection to embedded steel reinforcement and initiation of corrosion. Therefore, tunnel design needs to consider the potential for carbonation on internal surfaces and how design life can be achieved in severe environments. This paper examines methods for predicting carbonation and how deterioration can be mitigated through appropriate concrete mix design and construction practices.

This paper presents an analysis on the dynamic adsorption of frothers and collectors onto air bubbles in flotation. The analysis was carried out using the theory on the surfactant transfer by diffusion and adsorption. The bubble size was considered when solving the diffusion equation for the dynamic surface excess. The adsorption kinetics was modelled employing the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and its extension with the inclusion of the lateral interaction of the adsorbed molecules (the Frumkin adsorption isotherm). The numerical computation was applied to solve the governing equations. The dynamic adsorption of the surfactants was measured in terms of the dynamic surface tension for sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and Dowfroth 250, using pendant bubble tensiometry. The results show that for air bubbles with diameter of the order of 1 mm, the bubble size effect on the dynamic surface tension is small and the solution of the diffusion equation for a planar gas-liquid surface can be used to describe the dynamic adsorption onto the air bubbles. The experimental data obtained with SDBS were well described by the Frumkin adsorption isotherm and the molecular diffusion. The model description for the experimental data obtained with Dowfroth 250 required the kinetic equations. The paper is relevant for further analysis of the role of the adsorbed surfactants in the particle collection.

In late 1987 it was recognised that column flotation might have potential for improving the grade of the zinc concentrate produced at Pasminco's South Mine in Broken Hill. Intermittent test work was carried out during 1988 using a 90 mm diameter by 6 m high perspex column, built and initially operated by staff from CRA Advanced Technical Development. This column was found to have insufficient retention time so, during the first half of 1989, Pasminco constructed and installed a 200 mm diameter unit of the same height. Extensive testwork was carried out using this column during the latter half of 1989 and early 1990. It was clear from the results that a grade improvement of between 1 and 2 per cent (absolute) would be achievable. The effect of column cleaning on overall recovery was not established with the same degree of confidence, so the proposed new circuit is to include one of the existing banks of OK8 cleaner cells as a scavenger on column tailings. The test work provided sufficient data for preliminary design work to begin in May 1990 and commissioning of full scale zinc cleaner columns is planned for mid 1991. This paper summarizes the results and describes some of the experiences with column flotation at the Pasminco South Mine.

Bauxite residue or ‘red mud’ is a by-product of the Bayer Process, the primary process of alumina refining. Due to its high alkalinity and variable composition, its storage and disposal poses high environmental risks to water sources, surrounding ecosystems and human health. The high alkalinity (pH 12–13) is a significant factor in its classification as hazardous waste; to mitigate this, Australian refineries have integrated neutralisation processes into bauxite refining. Both sea water and carbon dioxide neutralisation processes are applicable. Multiple studies have demonstrated pH reduction from 12–13 to 7–10, depending on the method. The key advantages of CO2 neutralisation are that it allows for carbon sequestration and is more effective when utilised as a pre-treatment for recovery of metals, while sea water neutralisation is more established and has been integrated into two Australian refineries. This paper proposes the application of the bacteria Exiguobacterium oxidotolerans for bioleaching of iron from hematite in bauxite residue. The genus Exiguobacterium is characterised by its high levels of adaptability, halotolerance and alkaliphilic nature. E. oxidotolerans is successful at eluting Fe2+ from hematite via reductive dissolution, which complexes with oxalic acid produced during metabolism. This aquatic bacterium presents a novel process pathway for iron elution due to direct interaction of E. oxidotolerans with hematite via the cell membrane and operates within the pH range of neutralised red mud. The proposed mechanism is extracellular electron transfer, a microbial metabolic process where electron transfer is facilitated between bacterial cells and extracellular material. Currently this is being investigated for promotion of seaweed growth in coastal environments as soluble iron aids and fortifies colonies. This has potential downstream applications for cleaner iron and steel production. While theoretical, this paper explores the neutralisation, bioleaching and application of the Fe(II)- and Fe(III)-oxalate complexes formed.

The commercial evaluation of coking coal from bore core data will begin with a technical evaluation of the coal properties affecting coke quality. Methods currently used for prediction of coke.properties from coal analysis are illustrated but in each case accuracy of measurement and prediction should be clearly understood. It is suggested that coal be initially valued from coking properties (base value) and adjusted for chemical properties (merit value). Final evaluation of coal can only take place as coke in the blast furnace where the coke is assessed under high temperature operating conditions. The commercial value of a particular coking coal will depend on many additional factors other than the technical properties.

The late 1960's and 1970's saw the initial development of the coal resources of the Bowen Basin of Queensland. The projects developed relied on large scale, open-cut operations using draglines for overburden removal and, in the majority of cases, project viability could be established based solely on those open-cut operations. Many of the mines developed in the 1980's have the same characteristics.Unlike these mines, the German Creek Mine has limited open-cut reserves at low overburden to coal ratios, and planning of the complex involved a large open-cut mine capable of developing early cash flow, with phased introduction of underground mining to replace open-cut capacity as the strip ratio increased.

Impact-induced rock fragmentation is a mechanism that is commonly used for rock breakage in drilling and crushing. Additionally, rock fragmentation by blasting is frequently used in rock excavation operations. Experience shows that the presence of discontinuities can significantly influence the impact-induced damage and fragmentation of rock. Quantification of the response of jointed rock masses to impact loads is complicated by the fact that the available laboratory tests are mainly designed for aggregates or intact rocks. It can be argued that neither of these tests adequately represent a jointed rock mass. This paper presents the results of a series of numerical simulations used to investigate the influence of pre-existing discontinuities on the impact-induced fragmentation of rock masses. The methodology includes determination of the static and dynamic mechanical properties of a rock unit by conducting a series of laboratory tests on intact rock samples collected from a quarry in Canada. A 2D distinct element code, Particle Flow Code, was used to generate a bonded particle model in order to simulate both static mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and indirect tensile strength) and dynamic mechanical property (drop weight tensile strength) of the intact rock. The calibrated numerical model was then used to construct large-scale synthetic rock mass samples by incorporating discontinuity networks of different intensity into the bonded particle model. Finally, the impact-induced fragmentation inflicted by a rigid projectile particle on the jointed rock mass samples, simulated by a synthetic rock mass model, was determined. Key incompatible element ratios for metabasalts from the Early Permian Croisilles and Patuki Volcanics, South Island, New Zealand, provide constraints on the tectonic environment in which their precursor ophiolitic protolith formed. Two geochemically distinct metabasalt suites are recognised among both the Croisilles and Patuki rocks. Metabasalts from one suite exhibit the geochemical signatures of depleted tholeiites from oceanic spreading ridges (N-type MORB) or spreading centres in evolved back-arc basins. These N-type tholeiites show high Zr/Nb ratios (Zr/Nb = 37-62) and are depleted in light rare earth elements (LREE)((La/Y)N

"Pierre Gy showed in his early works that the results in estimating the variance of the mean value of continuous lots depends on sampling mode (random, stratified or systematic), except in the theoretical case that the measurand is randomly distributed in the lot. The experimental variance estimate calculated from samples taken from the lot is independent of sampling mode but depends on sample size and the type of the lot heterogeneity. Variography can be used to estimate the variance of the lot mean for different sampling modes.Gy also defined weighting error, which is made if a simple average is calculated from the assays of samples taken from a continuous object (eg from a process stream) where the flow rate varies with time and is correlated with the concentration of the analyte in the stream.The effect on sampling uncertainty of the three sampling modes and their interaction with the following factors in estimating the uncertainty of the mean concentration is studied using simulated lots, and lots having heterogeneity patterns similar to those of real data sets, including the effect of: the type of heterogeneity (random, grading and clustered heterogeneity patterns) increment size and number employing composite sampling weighting error. Block caving is the most economic underground methods for excavating massive orebodies, due to the high productivity and low production costs. The success of block caving operations depends on the fragmentation and draw control as large blocks decrease the equipment efficiency, inhibit the material flow and may lead to expensive secondary blasting. Even though ore handling system design, as well as overall economic results, both critically rely on secondary fragmentation, this parameter continues to be one of the least understood issues in the caving operations.This research focuses on the experimental study of secondary fragmentation, considering the impact of vertical pressures and material flow. Experiments using a load-haul-dump extraction system were conducted under laboratory conditions to quantify the influence of pressure and particle size on secondary fragmentation. Results demonstrate that increasing the vertical pressure (simulating deeper conditions) leads to higher fragmentation (smaller particle size) and greater fines generation during draw. The experimental results were applied to calibrate the developed mathematical model based on kinetic matrix. Study on Preparation and Gel Performance of High Purity Montmorillonite In order to research the colloidal and thixotropic performance of the inorganic gel prepared by high purity montmorillonite, this study uses the moderate grade bentonite ores from Weifang (China) as raw material. Two-stage hydrocyclone classification was applied to obtain the high purity montmorillonite with its content of 94.8 per cent. In contrast to other methods of montmorillonite purification, two-stage purification by hydroclone has the advantages of larger throughput and easily achieving auto-control in industry, and purified products with different montmorillonite content can be obtained by this method. And then the inorganic gel was prepared by the prepared high purity montmorillonite and its colloidal and thixotropic performances by measuring the flowability and thixotropy were further studies. Research results show that the inorganic gel has plastic body liquidity, the viscosity decreases with the increase of the shear rate, the static and dynamic shearing stress values are 33.98 Pa and 91.89 Pa, respectively, and the thixotropic value is 95.2 dyne+s/cm2, which indicates that it has preferable colloidal and thixotropic performance. Montmorillonite inorganic gel prepared by bentonite with high montmorillonite content and low-layer charge has better gel performance.

This paper describes an ongoing study into the management systems developed by mining operations in Papua New Guinea to address particular public health issues in the workforce (primarily communicable and lifestyle diseases). The first stage of the study involves the analysis of the site health and safety management system documentation of three major mining operations in Papua New Guinea, producing a descriptive summary of each system. In the second stage of the study these summary descriptions are evaluated using a maturity model constructed through a detailed review of literature. Experience with the evaluation process is then used to refine the maturity model. The analysis performed in the study is used to develop a process for creating a maturity model for mine site health risk management based on a theoretical risk management framework, and refining it through empirical evaluations of the actual systems in place on site. Companies can use maturity models as a guide to organisational improvement, which in the context of the study will assist the operations in developing their systems for the management of health both in their workforce and in local communities.
