A requisite corollary of mineral sand mining on North Stradbroake Island (Queensland (Qld), Australia) has been the progressive rehabilitation of post-mined lands for the revegetation of native subtropical Eucalypt communities. Since 2005, rigorous environmental monitoring has been undertaken to verify the annual development of post-rehabilitated sites. From these long-term analyses, a chronosequence of land revegetation (ranging from three to 26 years postrehabilitation) was developed to examine the rehabilitation trajectories of various post-mined sites in relation to proximal undisturbed locations. Here, we identified that some sites may be deviating from the intended natural analogues as evidenced by the opportunistic colonisationand otherwise æinvasiveÆ behaviour of a regionally native species (Black Sheoak - Allocasuarina littoralis), which appear to be displacing the intended Eucalypt varieties. In underground mining, the often unpredictable variability in ground conditions may lead to the application of suboptimal drilling and blasting patterns, resulting in poor performance. Experience and pertinent information to develop and implement improved drilling and blasting strategies can be easily lost due to the lack of means to help engineers store, access and manage this information. The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) through a series of industry funded applied research projects has been developing a system that can facilitate the drill and blast design, analysis, auditing, documentation and data management processes. The system is a hybrid between an information management software module called BMS (Blast Management System) and two design and analysis modules, 2DRing for underground production blasting activities and 2DFace for development blasting activities. A concise description of the software tools and its applications are given in this paper, supported by two case studies. Opportunities to further develop the software are also highlighted, they include options to integrate these tools to existing drilling and blasting automation systems and portable computing technology to facilitate the design, implementation and continuous improvement processes.

This paper describes the technique developed by the Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories (ACIRL) for the treatment of bore core samples to obtain data for coal preparation studies of the target reserves. The particle size distribution within the sample has a significant influence on the relationship between the yield and ash per cent of the floats coal at any ash level. The size analysis within the reconstituted feed from a coal preparation plant is determined by the size analysis of the feed coal, physical degradation of material in the process, and the breakdown of associated shales in water. The extent of material breakdown was studied in the ACIRL coal preparation pilot plants. The method of bore core evaluation includes simulation of this breakdown in a sample selectively crushed to conform with predicted or known run-of-mine size distribution. Modifications have also been made to the laboratory methods for froth flotation to approximate more closely with industrial practice.

The Delta two-degree quadrangle is located in west-central Utah, in the eastern Basin and Range physiographic province but near the intersection of the Basin and Range, Rocky Mountain, and Colorado Plateau provinces (Fig. 1). The quadrangle lies in the region of interior drainage that includes western Utah and most of Nevada, and, like the rest of that province, it has an arid climate. This work is part of the United States Geological Survey's ongoing CUSMAP (Conterminous United States Mineral Assessment Program) project in the Delta quadrangle. Trace-element geochemical data presented here includes information from approximately 600 heavy- mineral-concentrate and 2500 rock sample sites from throughout the Delta quadrangle.

Some words to honour Pedro:Pedro was among the few persons with a very high level in geology modelling, resource and reserve estimation, geometallurgy development, sampling theory applications and a deep understanding of the mining industry needs. He had brilliant ideas about new developments on economic geology. He was always looking at the long-term and proposed challenging questions a decade in advance on their solution.The fundamental aim of geometallurgy is to add economic value to the mining of mine resources by timely providing information and knowledge about the relevant metallurgical variables represented by their space models. In this manner, geometallurgy allows obtaining the optimal design of a project, mitigating processing risks, optimising and supporting production plans and identifying and assessing mining business opportunities.This paper describes the conceptual framework and geometallurgical definitions and some of Codelco’s experience during the last 15 years.

Properties of the soil profile fundamentally control water-limited ecosystems. Soil water availability affects vegetation dynamics of plant communities, but is also affected by these communities in return. Understanding this eco-hydrological interplay and the role of physical soil restoration is crucial for successful rehabilitation and management of post-mining landscapes in semi-arid areas. However, uncertainties exist in both the mathematical description of plant communities within ecological submodels and the predictability of future rainfall events. This study uses information gap decision theory combined with an ecohydrological system model to investigate how both uncertainties impact decision-making in the context of ecosystem rehabilitation. A range of management strategies are investigated to identify the optimal soil thickness for successful rehabilitation of native plant communities in Central Queensland. The results emphasise that thicker soils can counterbalance uncertainty in mathematical description of plant communities by increasing the simulated survival probability of plant communities. However, the influence of thicker soils on the robustness of plant communities against a change in future rainfall amount is rather marginal. By allocating an economic value for restoring a particular thickness of soil layer, these results can be used to evaluate the costs of ecosystem re-establishment with regard to two target measures - the survival probability of the plant community and their robustness against climate change.CITATION:Arnold, S, 2012. The Hellyer deposit, hosted in the Cambrian Mt Read Volcanics, displays features typical of volcanogenic massive sulphide orebodies. These include a well developed stringer zone, metal zonation within the orebody, a polymict volcaniclastic sequence flanking the deposit and a hangingwall alteration plume in overlying basaltic pillow laves.Mapping and core logging is very detailed in order to extract as much data as possible from the deposit and its host rocks. A geological log suitable for direct computer input was adopted shortly after the deposit's discovery.

Much of the research regarding the use of bacteria for the oxidation of sulfide minerals has been conducted using pure bacterial strains or synthetic minerals, often under ideal conditions, which does not reflect the conditions commonly encountered in commercially operating plants. This has also led to much conjecture as to the exact mechanism by which bacteria are able to enhance sulfide oxidation and as to which species of bacterial microflora are the most dominant. Recent advances in 16S rNA sequencing has confirmed that many of the bacterial species once thought to dominate commercial oxidation circuits were simply more willing to grow under the culturing conditions used and may only play a minor role in the oxidation process (Rawlings, 2002). Consequently this research will look at bacterial oxidation under conditions more reflective of commercial operations, focusing on the presence of organic carbonaceous material within a refractory sulfide orebody to be sourced from the Fosterville deposit of Perseverance Corporation Limited.

The paper introduces a newly developed multi-function test rig for fracture grouting. This test rig has many functions and its performance is consistent. It can control and adjust accurately the opening degree of fissures and static pres- sure; it can measure automatically the quantity of grout injected; it can measure precisely pressure drop of grout in fissures; it can test the results of injection, including effective dispersed distance, anti-filtration capacity of consolidated body, mechanical strength, etc. It can inject a single or two grouts into one or several fissures at a pressure of 16 MPa. Therefore, it is an ideal test rig for fracture injection. The paper depicts all the components of the test rig, its performance and application of the results obtained from fracture grouting tests. Examples are briefly described.

A cave-to-mill study being conducted at the New Afton block caving operation demonstrated the potential for sensor-based ore sorting equipment to reject waste and improve the grade of feed to the mill. The lack of selectivity and potential for dilution entry associated with the block cave mining method results in many caving operations having to mine and process material that is below cut-off grade at certain stages of production. Online monitoring and bulk sorting systems have the potential to alleviate this problem and improve the productivity of caving operations while reducing energy and water requirements for each tonne of concentrate produced.As part of the cave-to-mill study, the suitability of a range of sensors, such as X-ray fluorescence and induction-type sensors, to sort mine production at the New Afton mine was investigated. Results showed that the discrimination of ore and waste can potentially be carried out by implementing surficial sensors into the material handling system. The study also showed that a combination of sensor outputs could be used to identify a certain ore type so that pre-emptive changes can be made in the mill to improve beneficiation performance. Mathematical economic models for assess ment of technological progress in the mining industry in the USSR are discussed. The models are based on a simple index, TT which approxi- mates the rate of growth of the people's living standards. However, for application in the mining industry it is necessary to incorporate various parameters to account for the dynamic charges in the geological, mining and other technological conditions. A series of field experiments investigated the perfonnance of fine mesh curtain screens which were used to suppress coal dust in a transport roadway of a New South Wales colliery. Four types of screens were tested under dry and wet conditions. The screen materials consisted of flyscreen and garden "shadecloth" with single and double membranes of both materials. Personal dust samplers coupled to dust cyclones and filtration cassettes were used to collect the respirable and total components of dusts respectively. The procedure used for locating the samplers upstream and downstream of the screen was based on the roadway air velocity profiles. The number and configuration of the water sprays impinging onto these screens had significant influence on the results. The study showed that wet double layered flyscreen is the most effective of the four configurations tested.

The treatment of slimes has of late years been the chief difficulty in connection with cyanide work, in which much time and money has been spent in endeavouring to find a practical solution of this problem.The processes at present in use are:-1. Filter pressing, as practised in Western Australia.2. Decantation, as practised in South Africa.Filter pressing after apitation affords a ready and efficient means of separating the gold bearing solution from the slimes and admits a perfect washing thus ensuring a high extraction but the very high working costs forbids its application except on high grade material, the chief items being the necessary large amount of labour, compressed air, and general upkeep, none of which can be materially reduced. The decantation method has the ad vantage of low working cost but on the other hand the low extraction obtained, due to imperfect washing, the length of time occupied in' the treatment, and the enormous bulk of solutions to be handled, are serious disadvantages.In either process it is absolutely necessary to obtain a perfectly clean solution before starting the gold precipitation by zinc, which is a source of much trouble. Also the high first cost of installing either plant is such that they can only be adopted on mines with very large working capital.

The first introduction of automatic control systems for flotation occurred about fifteen years ago. The early control work coincided with the introduction of on-line assaying using XRF techniques. This OSA availability, coupled with the emergence of small digital computers suitable for process control in the late 1960-s, meant that the necessary process information and control hardware existed for flotation control experiments. A period of intensive research related to flotation control. ensued. A great deal of effort was devoted to the development of mathematical models of flotation. Plant experimentation sought to understand the effects of a range of flotation variables on the process. Finally, control loops were proposed and plant tested. An evolutionary pattern emerges when the range of flotation control installations is examined. The earliest systems had as objectives process stabilisation using reagent control. There were also some early attempts at flotation optimisation procedures, again using reagent variation. Current work is still associated with the same objectives. One of the difficulties with flotation control has been to recognise and define clear and precise control objectives. More emphasis is now placed on cleaner control which has the advantage that the objectives are usually well defined. A number of flotation control systems which cover a range of control system types is discussed. Based on this accumulated experience,a list of good and bad practice in flotation control is Proposed.

The Mt Keith Operation, 90 kilometres north of Leinster in the north-eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, was commissioned in October 1994. Based on a large tonnage, low-grade nickel sulphide orebody the plant was designed to produce 28 000 tonnes of nickel in a high-grade 20 per cent nickel concentrate. Following a successful and rapid start-up the operation is currently expanding to a throughput of ten million tonnes per annum (mtpa) ore and an annual production of 42 000 tonnes of nickel. This paper provides an overview of the Mt Keith Operation from commissioning to its present operation and Expansion.

Facies associations in the Okiduse Volcanics, woodlark island, suggest that two major volcanic centres erupted synchronously during the Middle Miocene. These centres are referred to as the Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre and the Uvarakoi Caldera. The Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre, centred on Boganuse Mountain in the Okiduse Range, was a typical, moderate-sized composite volcano (or stratovolcano). The seq-uence is readily divisible into lava (Boganuse lava unit), breccia (Nikuben breccia unit) and epiclastic (Talpas sandstone unit) dominant facies, typical of composite volcanoes. These facies girdle Boganuse Mountain and they are interpreted to represent vent, cone forming and ring plain associat-ions, respectively. These facies indicate a reconstructed volcano of approximately 1,700m height with a basal diameter of 7km. The presence of limited exposures of intrusive associated with the vent facies (Kuike'beimmicrodiorite) suggests that the volcano is only partially dissected. The Uvarakoi Caldera is a felsic volcanic system contrasting with the mafic Watou Mountain centre.

Underground coal heating is a significant hazard in some coal mines. The broad principles of how underground coal heatings occur is reasonably known, however the technique for locating the heatings in often inaccessible goaf has been proved to be difficult. Since 2002, CSIRO, with the support of the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has been undertaking investigations to apply and develop innovative surface-based radon technique for locating the underground heatings in Australia. This paper presents the progress of the investigation.

Having successfully applied computer techniques to open pit mining applications, many software developers are now using their skills to tackle the much harder areas of underground mine design, planning and production.Dramatic improvements in the performance to price ratio of hardware (including high resolution graphics screens), a better understanding of the techniques of surface and solids modelling (and their subsequent display), moves towards standard user interfaces and advanced concepts of representing grade distribution in the ore body have all contributed to the recent increase in underground mining software activity.This paper details the general requirements of a workable underground mining software system, providing a minimum checklist of desirable features and emphasises the importance of ease of use, flexibility and intuitive feel. Some relevant trends in hardware, software and application techniques are highlighted and comments made on areas which require further development or are only available in a small number of packages.Finally, a comment is made on the role of computer models to provide a unifying medium for tying together all aspects of underground design, planning and production.
