This study uses the Q Method to examine how those living in former metal mining landscapes value this heritage and their preferences for the long-term management of mine waste. Such sites are often perceived as derelict or degraded, and of very little value. It is therefore assumed that their reuse, for example for development or recovery of metals, is likely to be beneficial. There are around 5,000 former metal mines in England and Wales, many of which are protected for their ecological, geological or cultural value. The Q Method is particularly suitable for issues where there is no consensus of opinion. We asked 38 residents of six mining areas in England and Wales to ‘sort’ a series of statements based on their resonance with the resident’s perspective; this is the Q sort. The statements covered a range of opinions of the mining legacy, its value and options for its management with a particular focus on the potential for metal recovery from the wastes. Analysis of the Q sorts revealed five perspectives on the mining heritage. All placed a high value on the cultural and ecological value of this heritage, however, they differed in their priorities for long-term management. For example, emphasis was placed on either nature conservation, cultural heritage, water quality or the opportunity for job creation through reworking the mines. Cutting across these themes there were also differing perspectives on the role of experts and local people in shaping the future management of the wastes. This research suggests that the views of local people are nuanced; they value their mining heritage but opinion is split on the most effective way to manage these sites especially where there is an impact on water quality.CITATION:Sinnett, D E and Sardo, A M, 2018. For the most part they, rather than any chance circumstances or good luck, determined the fortunes of the Company. The interaction of flotation collectors with sulphide minerals takes place at the solid - solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulphides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidized to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen. The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidized xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulphides is discussed briefly.

Mechanical flotation machine design is typically based on hydrodynamic analysis, with scale-up calculated by geometric proportionality. End users often specify and purchase machines on the basis of retention time, characterised by the æ$/m3Æ approach; they may also consider the manufacturerÆs installed base. In some applications, end users also consider specific energy and the impact of energy consumption on operational costs. In other cases, a decision may be based on machine type (forced-air versus self-aspirating) and perceived metallurgical or operational advantages of one machine type over the other. With regard to metallurgical performance efficient bubble-particle contact is very important and is primarily influenced by two factors:the concentration and size distribution of bubbles in the machineÆs contact zone (the volume enclosed by the disperser); and the number of times that slurry is pumped through the contact zone. The second factor is a function of the machineÆs pumping rate and its retention time. Field data show that pumping efficiency is independent of aeration rate. In this paper, a new dimensionless number for the characterisation of flotation efficiency is presented. The contact frequency number (CFN) is defined as the number of times a given volume of slurry passes through a machineÆs active contact region, and is given by: CFN Qp/Qf, where:Qpis the pumping rate through the contact regionQfis the volumetric feed rate to the machine

This paper focuses on measures of the economic significance of mineral exploitation and processing activities, such as beneficiation, refining and smelting. Empirical measures are suggested to quantify the relevance of the degree processing within a nation's mineral industry. The most useful, based on the input-output econometric framework, are used to establish the magnitude of links between the mineral industry and its satellite activities and for the appraisal of large, non-marginal projects. The input-output impact analysis is refined to allow for country specific behaviour and synthetic indices for the appraisal of investments in the mineral sector are developed. These indices are further improved with the introduction of shadow prices to incorporate socio-economic issues. They are useful to direct mineral policy decisions and several investments towards the most promising objectives for national goals. Finally traditional methods for the appraisal of small scale, marginal, mineral projects are assessed where local impact and regional development issues are more relevant than national ones.

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a large country of over 1 000 000 square kilometres situated on the Atlantic coast of north-west Africa. It is bounded to the north by Western Sahara and Algeria, to the east by Mali, and to the south by Mali and Senegal. With the exception of a narrow strip in the south along the Senegal River valley, the country lies entirely within the Sahara. The north of the country is largely devoid of vegetation, and it is estimated that 90 per cent of the population of 2.1 million people live in the southern quarter of the country. From about the turn of the century, Mauritania was ruled by the French from Dakar in Senegal and, until 1960 when it obtained independence from the French, Mauritania did not have a capital. Today, the capital is Nouakchott, home to an estimated 600 000 Moors of mixed Arab, Berber and African descent. After independence in 1960, disputes over Spanish Sahara to the north led to a military coup in 1978 and it was not until 1991 that a democratic constitution was adopted. The new constitution declares Mauritania to be an `Islamic, African, and Arab Republic.' It provides for an executive president, elected for a six-year term, and for a bicameral legislature, consisting of a national assembly and a senate. The first presidential and legislative elections were held in 1992 under United Nations' supervision. Mauritania's economy is predominantly pastoral, and the country depends heavily on foreign aid. Its principal export industries are iron ore mining (about ten million tonnes per annum from mines near Fderik in the north) and fishing. Mines d'Or d'Akjoujt SA (MORAK), a company in which General Gold Resources NL (GGR) has 42.5 per cent equity, produces over 50 000 ounces of gold per annum, which represents the third largest export industry in the country.

Magneto flotation is a recently developed method aimed at simultaneous utilisation of the magnetic and flotation properties of minerals in separation processes. In this method, magnetic minerals are prevented from reporting to the froth product while non-magnetic minerals are being floated. With suitable ores, this makes it possible to reduce or entirely eliminate the cleaning and scavenging operations that are otherwise necessary in conventional flotation and magnetic separation systems. This paper describes the testing of magneto flotation on a Canadian magnetite ore. The ore sample used in the experimental work contained a total of 32.89 per cent Fe of which 87.60 per cent was magnetic in the form of magnetite. Magnetoflotation yielded, in a single step, a final concentrate assaying 69.10 per cent Fe and with an overall recovery of 84.84 per cent representing a magnetic iron recovery of 96.39 per cent. Comprehensive comparisons were made with conventional magnetic separation and flotation, and it was found that with these methods at least four processing steps were required to achieve results similar to those obtained with single-stage Magnetoflotation.

The Rahu and Ascot epithermal Au-Ag prospects are two km north of the Karangahake deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield, and all occur in an approximately 6 km2 north-south elongated magnetic æquietÆ zone. The prospects are hosted by andesitic flows, lithic-crystal tuffs and local sedimentary rocks; local silica sinter occurs at Ascot. These host rocks are intensely altered by quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and calcite. Several minerals show zoned distributions, such as widespread adularia that overlies more localised and deeper albite. Illite is the only dioctahedral phyllosilicate in several drill holes, but elsewhere it forms a shallow carapace underlain by interstratified illite-smectite with 50 to 90 percent illite. Veins are common with quartz dominating near the surface and calcite becoming more abundant at depth. Local laumontite-calcite veins also occur. Pseudosecondary and secondary fluid inclusions in quartz and calcite at Rahu and Ascot have homogenisation temperatures (Th) that range from 162¦ to 268¦C and 128¦ to 243¦C, respectively. Most inclusions have trapped dilute fluids with salinities of less than 1.9 weight percent NaCl equivalent, but 20 percent of the inclusions have salinities of 2.0 to 10.5 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest that the water table at Rahu occurred at 440 m above sea level (asl). At Ascot, silica sinter formed from discharging geothermal fluids (=100¦C) at the paleosurface at ~135 m asl. However the sinter also contains comb quartz with pseudosecondary inclusions that have a Th average of 229¦C, corresponding to a paleowater table at ~430 m asl during inclusion entrapment. Taken together, these results suggest that the Ascot sinter was buried by approximately 300 m of cover material during a major volcanic or tectonic event, and that subsequent hydrothermal fluids formed veins and alteration at Rahu and deposited comb quartz at Ascot.

Mineral processing plants have become large and complex, generally through progressive expansions. Addition of a pre-crushing stage to conventional Semi-Autogenous-Grinding (SAG) and ball mill - crushing (SABC) circuits has introduced a complex materials handling system coping with +200 mm particles. Application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) and implementing hybrid comminution circuits (ie, HPGR-SAG mill) requires proactive control of the feed size distribution to each unit. Application of Vertical Tower Mills (VTMs) and other fine grinding equipment to achieve a finer grind size, while maintaining the throughput, requires splitting the feed evenly between parallel units. Many of the conventional comminution circuits (ie, staged crushing and screening followed by staged ball milling) must deal with the transition from open pit ore, which is generally altered and soft, to underground ore, which is intact and hard, requiring existing crushers to produce a finer product to unload the ball mills.This paper presents common process improvement opportunities which have been identified during a number plant process reviews conducted by the authors in Australian and international operations. The operation of comminution circuits to known and accepted standards, which is explained in this paper, could improve the performance of circuits by between 5 and 10 per cent, generally at no capital cost and often at a lower operating cost. The performance improvement can be realised as throughput increase, a finer product size, or reduced operating costs (ie, energy saving, low maintenance, less consumables).Process optimisation opportunities presented in this paper include: enhancing materials handling and storage to avoid segregation; standard operation of screens to reduce misplaced materials; proper feeding arrangement and control of crushers to increase their utilisation; preparing proper feed for SAG mills to reduce grind size; splitting the feed evenly between parallel equipment to improve utilisation, and controlling operation of classification units to improve energy utilisation.CITATION:Yahyaei, M and Powell, M S, 2018. Traditionally, operators on mineral flotation plants have relied on visual inspection of the froth surface when making adjustments to process set-points. Machine vision systems are being developed to relate froth surface descriptors, which can be consistently measured in real time, to flotation performance. By investigating the impact of various selected operating variables on both froth surface characteristics and metallurgical performance it is possible to develop a management strategy for the control and optimisation of the process. This paper presents the results of testwork conducted at Kennecott copper mine which investigates the relationship between the froth colour and the concentrate grade and discusses the factors which affect the froth colour. This work shows that the main factors that influence the froth colour in this system are molybdenum, copper and iron concentrate grade, pulp and concentrate per cent solids and pulp iron grade.It goes on to develop models to predict the concentrate grade based on colour information and velocity and stability information. It also shows that the most accurate prediction is made with combined colour and stability information.

The New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mine currently produces 1.42 million tonnes of silver, lead and zinc ore annually. All of this ore is treated by the NBHC milling ccx[plex. This paper describes the crushing, grinding, flotation and filtration circuits used in the treatment of this ore and lists the major items of equignent used in these circuits. Metallurgical results, manning levels and consumption rates of reagents and grinding media are shown.

Many flotation operations need to improve liberation to increase recovery, yet often plant operators are concerned that finer grinding will produce æslimesÆ with low flotation recovery. Yet simple circuits can be designed to give good liberation and excellent fines recovery. The economics of fine grinding has changed fundamentally with new stirred milling processes like the IsaMill. This has also transformed flotation design due to the clean surfaces produced in the inert grinding environment and the narrow size distribution produced by the IsaMill. Past poor experiences with æovergrindingÆ in flotation circuits was often due to the wide size distribution and the degradation of mineral surfaces produced by conventional devices using steel media, like ball mills and tower mills. The correct practice is to design both grinding and flotation together to suit the liberation characteristics of the ore. This may result in several stages of grinding and flotation, recovering mineral as soon as it is liberated, then applying further grinding energy only to those particles that still need liberation. Flotation then occurs in relatively narrow size bands and with minerals with similar liberation characteristics. Though the circuit may look more complex on paper, in reality it is far simpler to operate since each section performs predicably. Circuit design also needs to address materials handling. Finer particles affect froth handling and dewatering, but can still be easily handled by standard products with careful attention to design of launders, pumps and pumpboxes, and de-aeration before thickening and filtering. Excellent examples of designing circuits to include ultrafine grinding include Mt Isa and McArthur River (MRM). In the last decade these operations have produced over ten million tonnes of concentrate with an average grain size below 10 ¦m and above 80 per cent recovery. At Mt Isa, zinc recovery was increased by ten per cent by applying fine grinding to existing poorly liberated streams. In fact, grinding finer in the IsaMill actually improved the recovery of fine particles by ten per cent, and maximum particle flotation recovery occurs for 10 ¦m particles. A more recent example is the flotation of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The use of conventional ball or tower milling to improve liberation is severely limited by the impact of commonly associated chromite on classification, and degradation of flotation performance by the steel grinding environment. The ability of open circuit IsaMills to deliver a narrowly sized ultrafine product with clean mineral surfaces is transforming the design of platinum flotation circuits. The science and practice of fine-grained flotation is now thoroughly proven. The availability of the 2.6 MW IsaMill has made ultra fine grinding a practical tool for flotation plant design. It is expected to become a standard choice for future applications of both fine-grained ores and for minerals with difficult flotation characteristics.

The great variety of geological conditions in French coal deposits has obliged the industry to develop different thick seam mining methods. In very steep seams in a dense deposit where stowing is necessary to avoid spontaneous combustion, surface subsidence and water problems, a rising horizontal slice method is used, the coal being hard enough and the seams regular (Lorraine). In very thick and irregular steep seams where the stowing is not necessary, a sub-level horizontal slicing is used; a third method has to be used in Dauphine.

The main task of grade control on a daily basis is to define the material that should be mined to a destination under various categories. This can be determined by grade, lithology, quality and blending criteria. In the case of multi-element deposits or deposits with various blending or other processing criteria the optimum selection of ore block boundaries can be quite complex. In every case the balance between ore loss and dilution must be considered when designing the ore block boundaries and this becomes a risk-based decision when using the conditional simulation model. The use of such systems allows grade control to meet specific targets, such as budget tonnages and grades and blended product specifications. Two case studies are presented: the Prominent Hill copper/gold mine and the Rapu Rapu zinc/copper mine. Mining is based on a rational grade control strategy involving a number of factors, including strong geological control, advanced geostatistical approaches, such as conditional simulation, and optimisation of the ore blocking to meet production requirements. This provides an objective, transparent and repeatable grade control strategy.

Georgius Agricola wrote in De Re Metallica in 1556 that a prudent a miner should not work in a region ruled by a tyrant-a person inimical to mining. In 1926, Associate Chief Sherman of the United States Forest Service in a speech stated, "It is the policy of the Forest Service to encourage the development of the mineral resources within the boundaries of the National Forests ... a man who fails to cultivate a friendly, helpful, cooperative spirit in his relations with those who are endeavoring to develop the mineral wealth of our mountains has no place in the Forest Service." Both statements are as true today as they were in 1556 and 1926. The challenge to the Forest Service and the mineral industry today is to maintain that cooperation in a world that has changed significantly since Agricola and Sherman. The United States Forest Service manages 77,000,000 hectares of land-mostly in the Western United States-an area equal in size to New South Wales. The vast majority-75 million hectares are National Forests, and 1.6 million hectares are National Grasslands. National Wilderness Areas account for 13 million hectares or rough- ly 17 per cent of the National Forest System. National Forest System lands (NFS) are some of the most visible, scenic and controversial lands in the country. They are also some of the most valuable for their mineral potential and production. The value of mineral produced exceeds US$4 billion per year. There are over 1200 producing mines, 15,000 oil and gas leases, and some of the largest lead, copper, silver, gold, platinum, molyb- denum, and coal deposits in the hemisphere. Every year the Forest Service approves nearly 5,000 mineral operations on the NFS. Much of the NFS (75 per cent) is open to location of mining claims pursuant to the 1872 Mining Law. And an equal amount of land is legally available for oil and gas leasing.

The dispersion pattern of heavy metals in soil and water is a consequence of complex geophysical and geochemical processes. Metal release from mining sites and subsequent migration occur primarily through acid mine drainage and erosion of waste and tailings dumps. Water plays a significant role in heavy metal mobilisation. Whilst it acts as a storage buffer for the pollutants, it is also the medium in which most of the reactions take place, and is undoubtedly the most significant transport vector in the pollution process. The intrinsic properties of the acidic drainage such as chemical composition, speciation of key mineral components, redox potential and pH are master variables controlling metal release, transport, deposition, reactivity and availability to biota. The mobility of heavy metals is strongly increased by acidification from acid mine drainage, and the discharge of these metals into the receiving waters results in numerous physical, chemical and biological responses in which the environment can affect the metal and vice versa. The result is an overwhelming number of association/dissociation, substitution, adsorption/desorption reactions, giving rise to a complex migration pattern. The attempt to understand and describe the dispersion pattern of heavy metals is complicated by the nature and level of interaction between the geochemical and hydrodynamic processes that generate and control the movement of the pollutants in the geosphere. Transport models which can be used to predict the behaviour of metal pollutants in a natural environment are still in the initial phases of development and their application to real life situations is limited. The Biochemical Cycle adds another dimension to the mobility of heavy metals. Metals form an important component of the food chain for man and plants. Biological uptake of metals from the bedrock and soil by organisms can result in migration paths very difficult to follow. Biodegradation or assimilation is just a tip of the iceberg.
