A practical approach has been developed for the design of both grates and pulp lifters. It is based on: an appreciation of the process interaction between grates and pulp lifters, an interpretation of mill charge structure as it relates to discharge through grates, and an analysis of pulp and solids flow in pulp lifter channels. This approach can be used to improve the overall discharge effectiveness of AG and SAG mills.

Current and proposed methods of resource classification relate to the geological, economic and technical confidence in the estimated resource. Geological confidence is, however, only vaguely defined. It is largely related to the level of drilling and sampling, to the geologistÆs perceived level of confidence in his/her work and on the continuity of the mineralisation. Rarely has any real attempt been made to assess how well a deposit has been explored, sampled and evaluated and how accurate or realistic the geological model is for the deposit. This contribution reviews the impact of two of the potential sources of error, ie sample recovery and quality. The first of these parameters is measured during logging and assaying, but is often forgotten during grade and tonnage estimation, and resource classification. Preliminary studies have shown that modelling of this parameter is a valid exercise, which should accompany the evaluation of grade and other economic parameters. The sample recovery factor for an ore block can then be used to reassess the confidence in the block. It could, for example, downgrade the status of a Measured Resource to an Indicated Resource even though standard methods might indicate that the higher classification is applicable. A method is proposed by which this recovery factor could be incorporated into current resource classifications producing a more sophisticated and comprehensive measure of sample quality. A review of the sources of error naturally leads to the assignment of scores to each stage of the evaluation process, depending on the methods used and assumptions made. Sample recovery is one important factor, which is likely to appear at several stages. These scores can then be weighted and combined in a manner resembling that used in the CSIR Rock Mass Classification. This score will then allow the resource estimate to be rated on a scale from 0 to 100 per cent to produce a Quality Control Index (QCI). However, this index must then be modified using an Evaluation Difficulty Index (EDI), which reflects the difficulty of a particular style of mineralisation to accurate resource estimation. This results in the production of a Resource Reliability Rating (RRR), which can then be linked to international classifications, such as the 1999 JORC; 2000 CIM; and 2001 EURO codes. This will permit a more precise definition of geological confidence levels or, combined with estimation error, produce a classification system in its own right. This same rating can also be used as the basis for technical audits of mineral projects.

Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. Case studies are presented for a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided.The auditing process as described here for coal mines, and coal handling and preparation plants, is equally applicable to the processing of other mineral ores, metalliferous mines, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

There has been minimal innovation in the methods used to process an ore over the last 50 years. Productivity increases have largely resulted in increased equipment size without implementation of parallel improvements in technology. Complex orebodies of the future will need mining operations to adopt new technologies and techniques to make future ore treatment economically viable. Three emerging technologies, namely high voltage pulse (HVP) pretreatment, fine screening and the HydroFloat<sub>TM</sub> coarse particle flotation cell will be presented in this paper and the potential benefits that may result if they are adopted in mineral processing circuits will be outlined. Concentration ranges are presented for 15 trace elements not previously reported in Australian bituminous coals. The results were obtained by instrumental neutron activation analysis, which has sufficiently high sensitivity to enable determination of many elements directly in coal at concentrations less than a few µg/g. The ranges found in Australian coal are similar to the ranges reported in North American bituminous coals.

Within a short time frame of just over two years Wirralie Gold Mine has been developed from a virgin geological discovery to an operating gold mine with a mine life of six years and a production rate of 50,000 oz per annum. Construction work on the 600,000 tpa single stage crushing, two stage milling CIP plant commenced in November 1987 and was completed some seven months later at an overall cost of $A25 million. Since commissioning in May 1988 the treatment plant has exceeded design tonnage, availability and recovery. A second expansion programme in January 1989 will increase plant capacity to one million tonnes per annum with associated bullion production of 80,000 ozs per annum.

Using a new type of laser surveying instrument named Particle Dynamics Analyser (PDA), the distributions of the radial and axial components of the mean velocity, the size and the concentration of solid particles at selected positions within a transparent hydrocyclone were directly measured out for the first time, from which profiles of the flow field of solid particles were obtained. And some new points were put forward such as the locus of zero vertical velocity (LZVV) of solid particles was not the same as that of liquid, and some particles in inner helical flow could also be separated. The results are of great significance to farther ascertain the separation principle of hydrocyclones and improve the separation efficiency.

The modern jig with a state-of-the-art control system is much more effective than its older version. This improved control system is used to modulate the amplitude and the frequency of the jig cycle. These two prime parameters are optimised with respect to feed characteristics for best jigging performance. Based on this understanding any jigging plant can be optimised. In addition to these established facts present study shows process efficiency improves further through optimisation of the feed quality.

Late Palaeozoic and Late Mesozoic phases of widespread overprinting have obliterated most of the primary magnetization signature of the Tasman Fold Belt. Palaeomagnetic programs of a regional extent offer best prospects for identification and interpretation of such secondary magnetizations and for isolation of any remaining primary magnetization. In 1983 the BMR initiated a regionally oriented palaeomagnetic study of the Tasman Fold Belt to obtain palaeomagnetic constraints on the tectogenesis of the fold belt. Particular attention is being paid to the analysis of possible differential movements between suspect or- tectonostratigraphic terranes within the Tasman Fold Belt and the respect to cratonic Australia. Work has concentrated so far on the Cowra Trough-Molong High region of the Lachlan Fold Belt and the New England region. Pilot sampling has been carried out in the Gympie region. In addition Palaeozoic sequences are being studied from the Amadeus Basin and the Ngalia Basin to refine the palaeomagnetic reference frame of cratonic Australia.

Indonesia holds a significant role in the utilisation of coal resources in the world. Although the number of Indonesian coal resources and reserves do not fall into the world’s top ten, according to 2009 statistics, Indonesia is the seventh largest producer of coal with a production of 256 Mt. More than 80 per cent of this amount is sold in the export market, making Indonesia the world’s second largest coal exporter. Most of the exported coal from Indonesia is used to fulfil the needs of the Pacific market, such as Japan, Taiwan, China, among others. It is also possible to reach the Atlantic market.Along with Indonesia’s development program, until 2025 the Indonesian government has adopted a National Energy Policy that aims to reduce the role of petroleum in electricity generation and replacing it with coal. As a follow-up of the policy, since 2009 PT PLN, the state electricity company has built steam power plants throughout Indonesia as an implementation of the first stage of the Electrical Acceleration Project with a capacity of 10 000 MW. Moving forward, in 2011 PT PLN will also build the second stage of the project with a capacity of 10 000 MW. As a result of the program, the domestic need for coal is expected to increase as much as 44.8 Mt.With the increase in domestic need and decrease in the number of reserves, the Indonesian government has adopted policies to secure the domestic coal supply. A policy that may potentially be adopted by the government is the limiting of coal production, seeing the high rate of increase in Indonesian coal production. The adoption of such a policy will change the distribution map of coal in the Pacific market. Thus, this paper will evaluate the change of coal distribution patterns in the Pacific market along with the increase in Indonesian domestic needs and Indonesian adoption of policies regarding the securing of coal supplies.

In this paper, it is shown that the higher the pre-activation concentration of copper ions in pulp, the larger the adsorption amounts of copper ions and xanthate on arsenopyrite surface, and the better the arsenopyrite flotability in strong alkaline medium. On arsenopyrite pre-activated with cupric ions, the xanthate adsorption density in strong alkaline medium is approximately equivalent to that of cupric ions. It is therefore concluded that an amount of copper ions adsorb on arsenopyrite surface first, and then an amount of xanthate can (and only can) adsorb dependently on the surface active sites produced by these adsorbed copper ions on the mineral, so that arsenopyrite is kept rather flotable and is hardly separated from pyrite even in very strong alkaline medium. Selectively wiping out the surface copper active sites on arsenopyrite is the key point of successful separation of pyrite from arsenopyrite. According to this theory, a new 'SZLI' (know-how) method was recommended to satisfactorily deal with the difficult separation.

Attention is given to three possible alternative structures namely corporate joint venture, partnership joint venture and unincorporated joint venture. A corporate joint venture involves the formation of a separate and distinct legal entity with limited liability. The shareholders of the Company will be the members of the consortium. A partnership joint venture involves the members of the consortium joining a formal partnership. The partners will conduct the business in common with each other and will share the profits and losses of the project activities. The partners will be jointly and severally liable. An unincorporated joint venture is distinct from a partnership. The members of the venture will not be jointly and severally liable. Taxation and accounting aspects are examined and an outline provided of a typical joint venture agreement. The two main advantages of an unincorporated joint venture are considered to be a favourable treatment for income tax purposes and a greater degree of flexibility when compared with the corporate joint venture and the partnership joint venture.

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) ships about 600,000 dry tonnes of copper concentrate per annum to Japan, Germany and Spain, with some spot sales to other countries. Concentrate sales value for 1984 was 335 million US$, representing almost half of PNG exports. Contained metal determination is based on physical and chemical measurements on representative samples. The entire procedure is subject to statistical uncertainties and possible systematic errors; losses as high as several percent of contained copper or gold are common and frequently are regarded as unavoidable. In this context, the function of the chemical laboratory is to identify and eliminate such errors and recommend correct technical procedures for possible inclusion in sales contracts. BCL's marketing management has encouraged this approach and the close buyer versus seller agreement is beneficial for all parties involved. BCL participates in the respective technical committees of the Standards Association of Australia (SAA) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Standard methods for sampling and analysis of copper, lead and zinc ores and concentrates are in course of preparation, some being due for publication shortly.

The evaluation of a new mineral resource and its economic viability is critically dependant on the quality of the assay data as it is this data that defines the grade of the resource. However, all too often the procedures of sampling and chemical analyses used to generate such data are neglected or given little consideration until final modelling and evaluation are under way. This approach frequently requires large reassay and/or re-sampling programs to be undertaken to validate or to improve the integrity of the data base. This paper outlines a step by step approach to ensure quality data is achieved and then maintained throughout the entire exploration and resource development program. This involves the use of correct field sampling methods, assay methods designed to give the required levels of accuracy and precision and quality procedures in place to monitor the effectiveness of the overall process. Thorough documentation is an overriding and necessary part of the entire process. Practical examples are given to demonstrate the use and value of these methods.

In the recent past a number of smelting plants were commissioned in India to supply the rising demand by domestic steelworks for manganese-based ferroalloys, and they enjoyed cheap electric power and readily available high-grade manganese ore. Presently, the cost of electric power is much higher than in some neighbouring countries, there continues to be poor transport infrastructure and the prices of high-grade manganese ore have increased. Additionally, the Indian Government has opened its economy to the outside world, resulting in the import duties on ferroalloys being drastically reduced. In this paper the current situation in India will be detailed, the electric arc furnace and blast furnace smelting methods for ferroalloys compared and proposals for the construction of a new ferromanganese blast furnace in India outlined. The future of ferroalloy smelters in India will be assessed and actions which could be taken to improve their position discussed.

The main iron ore deposits of Western Australia fall into three very different geological classes, which are, in order of importance: hematite enrichment ore, pisolitic limonite ore, and sedimentary ore. These are presently (1973) being mined in the approximate proportions 20 : 2 : 1, while the equivalent proportions for reserves are, very approximately, 200 : 70 : 1. Two minor categories which mar- ginally qualify as ore are detrital material variously referred to as scree ore or canga, and potentially beneficiable iron formation. These two latter types are dealt with very briefly, and the three main categories are dis- cussed in order of economic significance. Hematite enrichment ore results from the selective replacement of a pre-existing host rock by hematite. Almost without exception, this host is cherty banded iron formation (BIF); but certain exceptions have great genetic inter- est. Ore bodies of this kind occur both in the Archaean BIFs of the Pilbara and Yilgarn Blocks and in the Proterozoic BIFs of'the Hamersley Basin. It follows from their virtual restriction to a single kind of sedimentary host that there is strong stratigraphic control over the shape of ore bodies: these may be almost flat, of dyke-like form, or of complex configuration, according to the pre-enrichment structure of the host bed. This subject of paramount importance in many modern plants employed in the extraction of gold from ores by cyanidation, involves several considerations.With the old-type "slimes decantation" process, using several tanks of large dimension, installed at high capital cost, it was frequently possible to obtain good settlement over a protracted period, but the disability of indifferent response to subsequent filtration and washing of the residual pulp, after decantation of the supernatant pregnant solution, was often present.In modern cyanidation practice, the tendency is to reduce capital expenditure by continuous processing of the ore pulp in a plant of less volume, but capable of handling more tonnage through-put and yielding, coincidently, less residual dissolved gold in the final pulp residues.INHIBITORY FACTORS.These involve a study of the effect of the circuit water or solution employed in milling and treatment, the amount of "primary" slime occurring in the ore broken underground, the constitution of the "walls" underground, the inherent occurrence of colloidal slime in partially decomposed ore, and the presence of kaolinised and ferruginous clayey structures carrying payable infiltrations of gold values, to mention some of the troubles encountered in practice. The value of water is defined by its marginal utility. Challenges arise where the marginal utility is difficult to estimate. Therefore, when two or more interested parties wish to access water and they cannot use commensurate units for marginal utility; other means of value comparison must be sought. It is asserted here that sustainability principles can be used to guide this valuation if this is supported by a transparent decision framework. This paper proposes that the ICMM sustainable development principles provide appropriate guidance. In addition, a generic framework for decision making is suggested as a complement. Indicators of water management are recognised widely as an integral part of the accountability of minerals companies towards meeting sustainability goals. Less widely recognised are the ways in which sustainability principles can be used to guide decisions on water management which demonstrate growing awareness of its value. This paper illustrates the use of this logic in water issues associated with global sustainability challenges. It then goes on to demonstrate, using examples, that these links exist at all levels of the minerals industry and that indicators of this type are potentially as powerful as those currently being used. The reason for this is that the path from cause to effect is transparent and direct.
