Since 1985 there has been a revival in the alluvial gold mining industry in North Queensland. However, not all mines which have been established have been successful, some times due to a misconception that alluvial mines are quick to establish and easy to operate. A check list of factors which need to be considered when assessing alluvial mining projects in North Queensland is presented and their relative importance is briefly discussed.

Sulphide concentrates are produced in a wide range of mineral processing operations. In the case of base metals they are further treated by smelting and/or hydrometallurgical techniques. In the case of refractory gold ores, sulphide concentrates containing gold are roasted or oxidised by various hydrometallurgical processes. This paper discusses the development of the Activox(R) Process which can provide an alternative method for treating sulphide concentrates. This process consists of fine or ultra-fine milling, followed by mild pressure oxidation to produce solutions of base metals or to liberate refractory gold. Base metal solutions (eg of nickel and cobalt) can be further processed by solvent extraction and electrowinning, while refractory gold can be recovered by cyanidation. The economics of the Activox(R) Process are often better than alternative oxidation techniques.

The desire for minimising impacts of mining activities on the environment, and in particular, water resources; is usually tempered by the costs and practicalities of implementing æbest practiceÆ measures. This paper briefly discusses the theoretical and practical options for water management for typical mines and quarries in a range of environments to assess if adverse impacts can be completely eliminated or at least be perceived as doing so. The regulatory requirements for water resources management are usually an essential part of mine planning and operations that can be a primary focus for all stakeholders. As such they can distract attention from implementing best practice in water management for the benefit of the environment and the community for altruistic reasons that have a long-term benefit for the mining industry as a whole. Cost-effective options for supply, demand and quality management of water that comply with basic regulatory requirements are readily available. Making a mine æinvisibleÆ in a practical sense, in terms of impacts on water resources would require eliminating potentially contaminated discharges, minimising demand, maximising reuse and recycling and putting back a healthy proportion of the clean water that is taken out of the natural environment for use in mine operations. This may sound simple enough and there are many well-known standard approaches that are usually applied. But which are the most effective, and who benefits? New approaches to water management are becoming more affordable and can benefit the bottom line as well as the environment, but can they make a mine ædisappearÆ? The perception of whether a mine is æinvisibleÆ in terms of its impacts on water resources is as important as the actions taken to try to achieve such an objective. The viewpoints and thresholds of perceptions of the different stakeholders are therefore relevant to how ævisibleÆ mining activities become.

Spatial modelling has been used to determine potential locations of granite-related nickel skarn mineralisation throughout eastern Australia. It is believed that during granite intrusion, fluid can leach nickel from nearby mafic lithologies and combine with sulfur to form nickel sulfides. Currently exploration for this style of deposit has been limited to the region around the Avebury Deposit in western Tasmania. As the lithologies near Avebury are not unique it is feasible that similar deposits could exist elsewhere in Australia. The weights of evidence spatial data modelling technique was used to evaluate the wealth of geological data available over eastern Australia and included known economic deposits as training data to weight the themes of the model. These weighted themes were combined to create a prospectivity map showing areas favourable for granite-related nickel deposits. Several regions were identified by the model to have good potential to host nickel mineralisation similar to the Avebury deposit. These include areas located throughout New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, the Tasman District of New Zealand and, in particular, the Rockhampton region of eastern Queensland. The past decade has seen the widespread implementation of computerised real-time operational management systems in open pit mines. While these systems have made a significant impact on operational efficiency at a process level, surprisingly little work has gone into integrating these systems with other IT systems, including those used for tactical planning and enterprise resource planning. As a result of this gap in the information hierarchy, the goal of optimising an entire operation, or multiple operations, remains elusive. Implementation of computerised operational management systems in underground mines has been much slower. This is a significant, though often overlooked, reason why the productivity for underground mining is generally so much lower than for open pits. The historical reluctance to implement computerised operational management systems underground can in part be attributed to the underground environment, particularly the difficulty in establishing effective communications. Another factor retarding the implementation of systems underground has been the perception that the nature and scale of underground mining does not lend itself to computerised operational management. This perception can be challenged, not only by a process level examination of the underground mining, but also by a holistic examination of the entire industry. In recent years, the mining industry as a whole has destroyed rather than created wealth and underground mines are major culprits. The degree of value destruct has been more pronounced with underground mines, as the usual problem û low commodity prices û has been exacerbated by the harsh environment, low productivity and a æfog of warÆ no longer generally found in open pits. Faced with these realities, underground mines will have to adopt modern management tools or suffer extinction at the hands of an unsympathetic investment community. All is not gloom and doom, however. Technological advances have largely overcome the difficulties associated with the underground environment. As a result, there is a small, but growing, number of underground mines using computerised operational management systems to directly improve the bottom line. Much greater improvements can be realised if the industry takes advantage of the recent convergence in technology, to integrate process information with tactical and enterprise resource planning systems in order to provide a solid platform for all decision-making. This would result in the æeÆ mine. Given that the underground fraternity is essentially starting with a blank sheet, they have the opportunity to æsteal a marchÆ on open pit mines, who may be constrained by legacy systems. The benefits of the æeÆ mine are presented through a hypothetical case study that examines the shortfalls of the non-æeÆ mine. The paper ends by presenting a future vision for the æeÆ mine.

It is extraordinary that while Australia depends heavily on mineral wealth for its economic well-being, most Australians have no appreciation of the traditions and principles which drive and govern the mineral industry. Their understanding has been largely provided by those who campaign against the industry in one way or another and is therefore quite unrepresentative.

In order to see the sand mining industry in the context of the coastal plain environment, the following points are noted. The coastal plain comprises several different geomorphological and ecological entities, some or all of which may be profoundly different from their condition before European colonisation, Sand mining is only one of a number of competing land uses which modify the environment of a given area. The frontal dune system in particular has undergone considerable deterioration and with the pressures of an ever increasing population, this deterioration will accelerate until an adequate control policy is Implemented.

IT is generally accepted that for transport of coal underground from different collecting stations, the system of endless rope haulage with remote control is not only one of the safest and most economIcal, but is also one of the most'efficlent in dealing with output.When the coal measures lie in regular planes, the work of laying down such a haulage presents no difficulties. When, however, the dip of the measures is Irregular, or dislocated by faulting, the management is faced with the problem of constructing vertical curves of such a radius that the sag of the rope will correspond with the road bed, and thus obviate the danger of the rope rising and throwing the skips off the track.The direction of the main roads for haulage purposes being ascertained from the plan of the royalty to be worked, the faults or dislocations in the seam are determined for these roads with the greatest possible accuracy by means of bore holes from the surface.From the data thus obtained the haulage road can generally be so graded that the rope will keep on the floor during haulage operations, although the grades may in places be synclinal.The writer confesses that he knows of no accurate formula for calculating the sag of the rope under varying tensions and so determining the safe radius of the curve, and he had to depend upon past experiences under somewhat sImilar conditions.The accompanying sections illustrate a case where the writer has recently installed an endless rope underground approximately 5000 ft. in length, from the foot of a tunnel in which an endless rope delivers the output to the screening plant, and having to negotiate, first a 400-ft. downthrow fault, and later a 32 ft. upthrow.

There are a number of different mechanisms by which wetlands can immobilise the metals in mine drainage. Here, the biogeochemistry behind four of these mechanisms (adsorption, biological uptake, precipitation as oxyhydroxides, and precipitation as sulfides) is discussed from the perspective of sustainability. Moreover, treatment wetlands are considered as part of a larger system, also taking into account the source of the drainage and various aspects of the receiving waters. The biogeochemistry of different metal immobilisation mechanisms in wetlands determines what kind of drainage can be treated with success, and it also places an upper limit on the amount of metal that can be removed from the water phase per unit of time. This has important implications for the design of treatment wetlands, perhaps particularly in colder climates. A thorough understanding of the prevailing biogeochemical processes is essential when attempting to establish treatment wetlands after the closing of a mine. If a wetland is to be used as a sustainable æwalk-awayÆ solution, the anticipated change in treatment efficiency over time (as pollutants accumulate in the system) must be considered in relation to the expected changes in drainage quality. It is also important that the total metal immobilisation capacity of the wetland is not exceeded and that the integrity of the system is maintained, in order to minimise liberation of previously immobilised metals.

The Australian Mineral Industry has to compete on world markets, so its mineral research has to be aware of overseas developments, it must be of world class, and it must utilise as many ideas as possible in order to solve those problems that uniquely affect Australian minerals processing. North American mineral and resource research may be taken as a guide to world government, industrial, contract, and entrepreneurial research trends and ideas. A number of interesting findings are noted that may guide Australian developments and strategies for the future, in minerals research and exploitation.

Sulfur isotope data are available for 18 low-sulfide orogenic gold systems hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales including those in the northern Hill End Trough (Hargraves, Hill End, Napoleon Reefs, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town, Windeyer) and adjacent areas (Bodangora, Lucknow, Springfield), the Gilmore Fault Zone (Adelong, Sebastopol) and those in the Parkes district (Calarie, London-Victoria, Wyoming One-Myall United). Other systems for which data are available include Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, McMahons Reef and Yalgogrin. The d34S data for many of the larger deposits including Adelong, Bodangora, Calarie, Hargraves, Hill End London-Victoria, Lucknow, Sebastopol, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town and Windeyer (Group 1) are all very similar and have average d34S values close to zero per mil. Near 0ë d34S signatures imply that sulfur was sourced from a magmatic reservoir. Furthermore, the large Wyoming One deposit has d34S values significantly below 0ë with the data implying that sulfur was sourced from a fractionated magmatic reservoir. Group 2 deposits include those at Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, Napoleon Reefs, McMahons Reef and Springfield . These deposits have average d34S values significantly above 0ë. With the exception of Springfield where sulfur was probably sourced from the Hill End Trough, Group 2 deposits are an order of magnitude smaller than Group 1 deposits. The results suggest that many of the larger orogenic-related gold deposits hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales derived sulfur and gold as a result of leaching and recycling from a magmatic reservoir. Alternatively, there may have been direct mantle-derived input; however, this is considered unlikely on geological grounds. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A report is given of the problems of finance and physical resources that currently affect The University of New South Wales, and of some of the measures adopted to alleviate them. Partly as' a result of review procedures, a School of Mines was formed to amalgamate Applied Geology and Mining Engineering, and to add the skills of extractive metallurgy to produce a group to match the needs of the minerals industry. A review of courses within the School indicated a need for enhanced computer teaching, which is partially negated by a lack of resources. It also shows an overcrowded course whose structure could possibly benefit from a split into managerial and specialist streams.

The mineralogy of ten trihydrate bauxites and their leached residues from bomb digestion tests at 140, 180 and 2400C was investigated and the resultsòcorrelated with analytical data. It is shown that increased recovery of alumina at high temperatures is due to. the dehydroxylation of goethiteòrather than the presence of alumina monohydrates. The effects of aluminous goethite -on the interpretation of "available alumina". results-and normative analysis are discussed and it is concluded that,'cautionòmust be exercised in interpreting the results of bomb digestion tests in terms of alumina hvdrates.

Surface lakes or water accumulation present a possible threat for the flooding of the underground mining works. Therefore, the criteria that define the conditions under which no flooding of the mining works can occur are of vital interest to the miners. The authors present the criteria that they developed for the Velenje lignite mine, Yugoslavia, and that take into account the elastoplastic behaviour of the rocks and the natural stresses involved in the deformable strata between the bottom of the lakes and the mine works as well as the extent of the direct caving-in process resulting from longwall mining activity. Fi- nally a generalization of these criteria to the other rock and stress conditions is discussed.

Taxes have an impact on mineral resource availability in several ways. There is the obvious effect on the grades needed for mineral deposits to become economic orebodies. There are also indirect effects which can have equally significant impacts. The paper examines the appropriateness of different types of taxes in the mining industry. The effects of discriminatory taxes such as price-based royalties are described. There is a discussion on the feasibility of introducing a single resources tax to replace completely the various forms of taxes presently applied to the industry. The subtle impacts of taxes are described in a section covering the way in which apprehension over future possible changes to both the level and diversity of taxes is reflected in industry confidence. It is concluded that taxation can significantly limit the economic availability of mineral resources.

Dilution and ore loss have an important bearing on the success of open pit mining projects. Their impacts on production costs, revenues and production rate require that they are correctly modelled in the long-term mine plan. The estimation of dilution and ore loss is therefore an essential part of any Ore Reserve estimate or mine schedule. Large open pit mines are driven by the economies of scale that are achieved at the cost of less selectivity in the discrimination of ore and waste. Planning for these mines is facilitated by the use of block models for mine design, scheduling and the conversion of Mineral Resources into Ore Reserves. This paper reviews various approaches to the estimation of dilution and ore loss, as implemented in computer block models. In the case of orebodies with well-defined sharp boundaries, rather than irregular stockwork mineralisation, the geological interpretation is a critical factor. Variability in the geometry of orebodies is common within large open pits and must be taken into account when estimating dilution and ore loss. A method of regularisation, controlled by the wireframed geological model, is demonstrated, using examples from large open pit stratiform copper and magnetite deposits. This can be carried out without special computer software modules.

Selection of the mining method and most appropriate mine layout for deep open cut coal mines is discussed, giving particular attention to the types of mines expected to be developed in the future in Australia. Because of the more complex nature of these operations a large number of alternatives for mine design are available, and the constraints associated with these designs are discussed. Potential problems to be overcome are identified to allow setting of realistic targets for maximum output and build-up production rates.

The refractory industry in New Zealand is small, consisting of two main manufacturers - one at Huntly and the other at Kamo. Together these would have an annual refractory production of about 30 000 tonnes. The industries which use refractories include two steelworks, NewZealand Steel Limited and Pacific Steel Limited, the former is involved in continuous casting from sponge, iron and scrap steel and the latter is involved in ingot teaming from scrap steel and steel billets; One aluminium smelter, cement works, dairy companies, small foundries producing engineering requirements and many other small users. The New Zealand manufacturers produce refractories in thefire brick range, that is up to 50 per cent alumina content (ignited basis), based on indigenous raw materials and in the high alumina range up to 85 per cent alumina content (ignited basis) based on imported bauxites. All of the basic refractories high purity silica and high alumina low alkali refractories and many of the higher grade acid resisting refractories are imported.

To the south and west of Broken Hill lies the Thackaringa silver-lead district, about 25 miles, and is the locality really of the first silver find in the country long before Broken Hill, the geological fomations of which it much resembles. The Iocks and their structure are identical, except that in this area they are  more irregularly foliated and apparently much more faulted and expose in places quick successions of complete anticlines and synclines, even in a single lease. Saddles of ore respectively are found coinciding with the flexures of the rock but many minor veins otherwise and branches exist and make connections which render the whole a mining problem. It follows then that the surface.of the ground after some denudation in dotted with croppings of all the series, and in such a confusing way that the actual strike of a vein may be even confounded with the dip and readily mistaken for it at a few places. The main character of the outcrops are those usual in the district consisting almost wholly of argentiferous and silicious ironstone, sometimes gossan, which at a depth in a few feet changes to a gangue of very silicious carbonate of iron (crystallised), which occurrence is uniform through this district.The exploration of the lodes has not been extensive as it has not been well understood. Shallow shafts and drives have comprised nearly all the mining at present, which is evident on first sight by the numerous shafts and small excavations dotted 'about, as in an alluvial field. The depth of exploration underground in one place had gone several hundreds of feet, never more than 150 feet vertical from the surface in depth and irregular. The undulations of the most continuous work in this direction is such that it presents at different places successively either a tunnel, shaft, underlay winze, level, or Tise, and is on ore all the time, and where the rocks are faulted (which occurs as much as 30 feet and more) these changes are very abrupt, but for working on are suitably connected by the management.
