The role of solutionizing conditions within the T6 heat treatment of the cast Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy with micro-additions of Zr-Ti-V was assessed in terms of their influence on microstructure and mechanical properties. As a solution treatment, a single step process at 485 and 510oC and a two-step process at 510 and 525oC for varying time intervals from 0.5 to 9 h, were examined. In all cases, solution treatment was followed by isothermal aging at 150oC for 100 h. The microstructural analysis showed that the solution treatment changed the eutectic silicon morphology from needle-like, present after casting, to spherical shape in the T6 state and that the extent of changes was strongly influenced by temperature and time. The Cu- and Mg-rich phases completely dissolved during solution treatment while the Fe-containing phase, Al8Si6Mg3Fe, remained partially in the microstructure. The Ti, V and Zr containing phases, Al13Si2Ti3Zr and Al3Si26FeTiV10, present in as-cast state, were partially dissolved during solution treatment, reducing their size by 10 - 48%. The studied alloy reached the maximum ultimate tensile strength of 335 MPa and yield stress of 303 MPa for two-step solutionizing with a total time of 4.5 h. It is concluded that the two-step solution treatment resulted in higher tensile properties than the single-step process.

The Sarcheshmeh copper deposit contains 1 billion tones of ore averaging 0.7% copper and 0.025% molybdenum. It is located southeast of Iran and currently processes 41,000t/d. Molybdenite as a by-product is recovered in two separate stages. First, a bulk coppermolybdenum concentrate is produced and in the second stage these two are separated. The recovery of molybdenite in the first and second stages is 65% and 85-90%, respectively. The yearly production of molybdenite concentrate varies between 3500 and 4000 t. Sodium sulphide is used as the depressant of the copper and iron bearing minerals which due to a rather high consumption (17.7 kg/t) constitutes one of the major cost items of the plant (i.e., 58% of total reagents cost). A detailed laboratory scale study showed that replacing air with nitrogen could reduce the consumption of sodium sulphide (i.e., H2S or mineral origin). Nitrogen for the plant was supplied from an oxygen plant used for the smelter through a 1400 m long pipeline. The existence of the oxygen plant at the Sarcheshmeh complex was a key factor in the implementation and success of this project. After using nitrogen in the plant for a period of twenty one months, the consumption of sodium sulphide was reduced from 17.7 to 14.2 kg/t at constant metallurgy. The reduction was lower than expected which was mainly due to the type of sodium sulphide used and the lack of any automatic instrument to control the depressant (sodium sulphide) dosage. The latter in turn caused the operators to overuse sodium sulphide in order to reach and maintain the target metallurgy (i.e., higher molybdenite recovery along with lower copper content of the concentrate).

Le minage en profondeur sous contrainte modérée à élevée présente de nombreux défis aux opérateurs et aux ingénieurs de mine notamment au niveau du contrôle de terrain et de l?environnement minier souterrain, pour assurer la sécurité des travailleurs sous terre et la continuité du cycle d?opération. Des conditions de contrainte élevée signifient une pression accrue au front de taille et sur les structures minières tels les piliers de mine et les fins de zone, un risque de rupture violente ou de coup de toit plus élevé, des zones de rupture plus grandes au pourtour des excavations, des charges accrues sur le support de terrain, etc. Le présent article fournit un aperçu du travail fait à l?intérieur du Programme de Contrôle de terrain de CANMET au cours des sept (7) dernières années, entre 1995 et 2001, pour comprendre et suivre l?évolution des niveaux de contrainte à l?intérieur des structures minières. Les propriétés déterminées en laboratoire sur des échantillons rocheux et les prévisions effectuées au moment de la conception sont comparées avec les observations effectuées en chantier à la paroi des excavations et à l?intérieur de la masse rocheuse. La plupart des cas discutés ici montrent une corrélation satisfaisante entre les observations effectuées en chantier d?une part, et les résultats d?essai obtenus en laboratoire et les calculs réalisés lors de la conception d?autre part. Ces observations peuvent donc être considérées comme des moyens relativement sûrs pour vérifier et suivre l?évolution des niveaux de contrainte présents à l?intérieur des structures minières.

"Tensile strength of rock samples is measured by direct and indirect tensile tests in accordance with standard guidelines. Due to the difficulties in performing direct tensile test, the indirect tensile (Brazilian) test is conventionally carried out to obtain the ultimate tensile strength. A limited number of studies have been conducted to investigate the role of sample size (length to diameter ratio = L/D) in the stress distribution of the Brazilian test using numerical and analytical methods. These investigations showed that the tensile stress distribution along the loading diameter is not uniform. They also indicated that the difference between the tensile stress at the middle part and at the sides of the sample with higher L/D ratio is greater than that in the other samples.The objective of this study is to show the effect of tensile stress distribution on the fracture surface created by the Brazilian test from a morphological point of view on the samples with different L/D ratio. Hence, a series of fracture surfaces created using the Brazilian tests on the rock samples with L/D of 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25 and 1.5 were investigated.In this study, all fracture surfaces were scanned by a 3D laser profilommeter. A number of roughness profiles parallel and perpendicular to loading axis have been selected from the samples with different L/D ratio and spacing of 1 mm. The results show that the roughness of the profiles perpendicular to the loading axis increases with an increase of L/D ratio, while the roughness of the profiles parallel to the loading axis decreases. Furthermore, some roughness profiles parallel to the loading axis were chosen and divided into three segments. The results revealed that the segment in adjacent to the upper loading platen possesses higher roughness than the other segments."

"The results of humus and overburden geochemical surveys over the Doyon, Bousquet and Page-Williams gold ore deposits are presented.These studies show that humus sampling for gold gives negative results over the Doyon deposit. The lack of response is probably caused by the presence of 1 m of relatively impermeable glaciolacustrine clay and silt that overlies 1 m to 2 m of till over the surface expression of the ore zone. By contrast, positive responses for gold occur in humus samples over the Page Williams A and C gold deposits. The ""A"" ore zone is covered by several metres of exotic calcareous till over 0.5 m to 1 m of older, locally derived till. Anomalous values for gold in humus range from 10 to 35 ppb over the orebody. Overburden over the ""C"" ore zones is much thinner, generally it consists of less than 2 m of sandy till. Trenching humus anomalies that range from 10 to 1360ppb Au uncovered the gold mineralization. The geochemical dispersal trains in till from the Doyon orebody and the Page-Williams ""A"" zone are relatively short (i.e. less than 200 m) because both deposits occur in the lee of bedrock highs that shielded them from extensive glacial quarrying. Dispersal trains from all three pyritic gold deposits can be defined using either the fine fraction or heavy mineral fraction of the till.The intensity of the gold in till anomalies over the ore zones is variable. Therefore, it would be misleading to attach rigid significant threshold gold values to overburden drilling results. Each case must be evaluated based on bedrock topography, sample density, overburden type, thickness of till, as well as size, type and orientation of the target exposed to glacial erosion."

"The planning and construction of prime coking coal beneficiation plants in the nationalized mines in India are reviewed. Flow schemes, construction practice, materials consumption, and costs are detailed.Medium-capacity beneficiation plants with multiple loops are recommended under Indian conditions.IntroductionThe reserve of high-grade and easily washed metallurgical coal in India are quite limited. Prime coking coal constitutes approximately 22% of the total resources and occurs exclusively in the Jharia coalfield in the state of Bihar. Bharat Coking Coal Limited (a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) the nationalized mining sector of India) owns 80% of the Jharia collieries. The development of Jharia coalfield in the pre-nationalized period before 1971 has been characterized by a large number of small mines with primitive mining methods and low productivity. The production of prime coking coal to meet the demand of the steel industry in India has to increase from the existing level of 11.1 million tonnes to 43.4 million tonnes per annum by 2000 AD, thereby producing 5.61 million tonnes and 22.7 million tonnes of clean coal respectively. An ambitious program has been undertaken for development of bigger mines with an average production of 1 to 3 million tonnes per annum. With the fast dwindling reserves of good quality coking coal, more inferior grade coal seams, having difficult washing characteristics, are now being mined. All the coal from the future mines will have to be beneficiated to make it suitable for consumption of steel plants; the following washeries are being planned for construction by 2000 AD:"

"Pressure exerted on gold producers by regulators, project financiers, and civil society in the wake of the Baia Mare tailings spill in Romania during 2000 prompted most responsible gold companies to sign up to the International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport, and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code). The Code stipulates a ‘cradle to grave’ approach more comprehensive than that applied to any other mining reagent and poses particular challenges for operators who use cyanide-bearing tailings for backfill. This paper examine some of the challenges for Code compliance facing deep underground gold mines that employ backfill technology, most particularly the requirement to demonstrate that the potential migration of cyanide (and its degradation products) from emplaced backfill will not have an unacceptable impact on worker health and safety or on the receiving environment, either during mine life or after closure.Although the Code only contains a single reference to backfill, more careful consideration confirms that most sections of the Code that deal with tailings management are potentially applicable to mines where tailings material is used for backfill. Certain principles of the Code also pertain to aspects of operations, worker safety, emergency response, training, and dialogue with stakeholders relating to backfilling practice.For gold mines of the Far West Rand, the most significant cyanide-related risks associated with backfill operations relate to worker exposure to cyanide-bearing seepage and HCN gas. There is potential for seepage of cyanide-bearing water from backfill to compromise the beneficial use of surface and groundwater, and thus impact on downstream users and ecosystems. However, the extreme depth of mining and the specific geological and hydrological controls on the Far West Rand suggest that the potential environmental risks associated with backfill are likely to be considerably less significant than the cyanide-related risks to the workforce."

"The Bongara area, northern Peru, contains Zn-Pb mineralization with characteristics typical of Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) systems. The northwest-southeast-trending late Triassic-Jurassic car¬bonate host rocks of the Pucará Group were locally replaced by early (D1) and late (D2) dolomite. Fluid inclusion microthermometric data from dolomite and sphalerite are typical of MVT ore fluids (78° to 187°C; ~15-23 wt.% CaCl2 equivalent), and do not show apparent covariation between temperature and salinity.Homogenization temperature data from D1 and D2 dolomite show a decrease from northern (mean Th = 138°C) to central (mean Th = 126°C) to southern areas (mean Th = 102°C), suggesting fluid flow from north to south. Assuming a geothermal gradient of ~30°C/km and an average surface temperature of ~20°C, the lower temperature limits might approximate the ambient host-rock temperatures, whereas the upper temperature limits may represent minimum temperatures of a deeper aquifer, probably at a maximum depth of ~6000 m. The lower temperature limits are also similar to the estimated temperatures if dolomitization and mineralization took place in the Late Cretaceous at ~2000-3000 m depth, probably during the formation of the Peruvian fold and thrust belt near the present day Peru-Ecuador border.Fluid inclusion data show that the fluids in each studied location had relatively uniform temperatures and salinities during dolomitization and mineralization. A significant salinity drop and a slight temperature decrease are observed during late calcite precipitation, suggesting mixing of brines with dilute, cooler fluids."

"The raw ores which are processed in mineral processing plants exhibit very strong variations of their physical and chemical properties. As a consequence, the performances of the comminution and separation processes vary greatly from time to time. Model-based control strategies improve the performance of the plant; however, they require some form of adaptation to cope with the variations of the are properties.This paper deals with the use of adaptive techniques for the control of mineral processes. It begins with a survey on adaptive control algorithms including parameters estimation aspects. Then several examples dealing with crushing, rod, ball, autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding, flotation , drying and calcination processes are reviewed.IntroductionThe operation of the various processes of mineral processing plants (crushing, grinding, flotation, dewatering, etc.) is generally controlled using empirically tuned regulators of constant structure, such as PID controllers. To improve the operation performance, mineral processors try to implement specifically designed controllers, i.e. controllers based on plant dynamic models. Most of the time, these techniques improve the control of the mineral processing installations. However, modelling is a complex procedure because of the problems of measurement and data management, specific to this industry, and because of the variations of the model parameters. In this context model-based control strategies do not always bring the expected improvements or are sometimes discarded and replaced by more conventional techniques .The sources of variation of the dynamic behaviour of mineral processing systems can be classified into three categories: (I) the inherent changes of the raw ore properties (composition, grindability, mineralogical texture, etc.); (2) the process tuning modifications (grinding media loads, number of hydrocyclones, slurry level in flotation cells, agitation speeds, etc.); (3) the feedrate variation of the ore, water, chemical reagents, etc. All these factors change the fundamental properties of the process dynamics such as the grinding or flotation rates and the residence time in the equipment. The simplified linear models which are used to describe the process dynamics are not able to track the complex behaviour of the mineral processing systems when the amplitude of the sources of variation are too large. The mismatch between the model and the plant behaviour is then frequently a cause of model-based controller failures."

"The Buffalo gold deposit is a small deposit consisting of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins within a granodiorite stock in the Red Lake greenstone belt. This study aims to characterize the mineralizing fluids through fluid inclusion and stable isotope analyses and to compare them with those of the world-class Campbell- Red Lake deposit. Four types of fluid inclusions were recognized, including carbonic, aqueous-carbonic, aqueous, and halite-bearing aqueous, with the carbonic type being the most abundant. Raman analyses indicate that the carbonic phase mainly consists of CO2, with minor amounts of N2 and CH4, and rarely detectable H2S. The homogenization temperatures of the carbonic inclusions range from -41.7° to 30.9°C. The homogenization temperatures and salinities of the aqueous, halite-bearing aqueous, and aqueous-carbonic inclusions are 130° to 276°C and 9.7 to 23.6 wt.% NaCl equiv., 155° to 207°C and 32.9 to 42.3 wt.% NaCl equiv., and 215° to 357°C and 8.3 to 19.7 wt.% NaCl equiv., respectively. The d18OVSMOW values of tourmaline range from 8.2‰ to 9.0‰, and those of quartz from 11.4‰ to 11.9‰, with estimated fluid temperatures from 323° to 399°C based on the quartz-tourmaline isotopic geothermometer. It is postulated that separate CO2-dominated and aqueous fluids intermittently invaded the fracture/vein system in response to fluid pressure fluctuations, with limited mixing. The CO2-dominated fluid, previously recognized in Campbell-Red Lake as the main mineralizing fluid, is inferred to have been derived from deeper parts of the crust. This deep CO2-dominated fluid reservoir might have been a common source for gold mineralization in the Red Lake greenstone belt. A pipeline syphon can be a simple and reliable alternative for water conveyance as compared to otherwise more complex pumping systems or low-level outlet conduits through earthfill dams. In a simple form, it consists of a pipeline constructed over the top of a dam or other high topographic feature, connecting a source pond to a receiving pond or channel (Fig. 1). The syphon action is initiated by removing air from the pipeline (priming) using water pumps, vacuum trucks, or simple devices that can be purchased “off-the-shelf.” Once primed, the syphon flow rate can be controlled or stopped using conventional gate, valve, orifice plate, or other devices. Repriming is not required even if the flow is stopped, provided the syphon was not drained. A limiting factor in considering a pipeline syphon as a design option is the maximum lift (i.e. vertical distance from source pond water level to summit of pipeline syphon) which is approximately 9 m or less, depending on pipeline syphon features and site conditions. A pipeline syphon can be quickly constructed from readily available materials including steel, concrete, polyethylene, or PVC pipe. It is particularly well suited to many of the unique conditions often encountered at mine sites. This paper identifies situations that can sometimes be best resolved using a pipeline syphon. It provides basic principles for pipeline syphon design and includes case histories of their successful application.

Copper feed materials processing is becoming more challenging, due to an incremental increase in the mineralogical and compositional complexity of these feeds. These complex and polymetallic feeds are now becoming more common and many sites have been forced to re-evaluate their operating strategies to process these materials at cost competitive rates, whilst meeting ever more stringent environmental regulations. Most operations must first evaluate the merits of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical treatment routes. Although there are multiple copper smelting technologies available, only top-submerged lance (TSL) technology, supplied by Glencore Technology as ISASMELT™, has been applied in the real world to consistently and successfully smelt complex materials in integrated metallurgical facilities such as Glencore’s Kazzinc Ltd. operation in Kazakhstan, Umicore Precious Metals Refining in Belgium and Aurubis AG in Germany. Glencore Technology also offers hydrometallurgical processing, through the Albion Process™ technology, opening up viable flowsheet options previously not possible for these complex feeds. This paper describes a number of real world process flowsheets at global operations and Glencore’s own operations at Mount Isa and Kazzinc Ltd., which process complex feeds. These flowsheets integrate the ISASMELT™, Albion Process™, ISACONVERT™, ISAKIDD™ Tank house, and bottom blown oxygen cupel (BBOC™) technologies to provide an effective process solution for the treatment of complex polymetallic feeds to produce metallic copper and associated by-products. INTRODUCTION Traditional smelters and those built in recent times within the bulk smelting hubs of the world have been designed to treat standard/clean concentrates. In recent years the processing of complex polymetallic sulfide concentrates and the recycling of secondary copper and derivatives of waste electrical and electronic equipment, such as e-scrap, have become a focus for numerous companies (Alvear & Nikolic, 2013). Processing of these complex feeds, characterized by relatively high levels of minor elements (over 5% of elements such as arsenic, antimony, bismuth, lead and zinc) is more challenging. Facilities not designed for these types of materials may require significant modifications or a change in smelting technology to treat them. "IntroductionCemented backfill has been placed underground in slurry form in Inco Limited's Ontario Division mines since the early 196Os. The slurry was traditionally mixed on surface at between 65 and 70 wt% solids* and transported underground via gravity through a borehole-pipeline distribution system. This method of placement, while simple and dependable, has proven to be costly because of the large amounts of transport water involved.A significant quantity of the slimes buildup on mine levels is caused by the backfill water carrying cement and other fine material out of the stopes. The level cleanup and eventual pumping or hoisting of the slimes and water back to surface result in substantial indirect backfilling costs.The cement that remains in the stope is always overhydrated because of the high water cement ratios that exist. As a consequence, high concentrations of Portland cement must be added to the backfill to produce the fill strengths required for the different mining methods.Pouring backfill at these densities also demands extensive fill preparatory work in the stopes to withstand the hydraulic heads created by the slurried fill. This, along with the delays in pouring necessary to allow for water drainage, result in significant losses in productivity.These negative aspects of slurry placed fill has led Inco Limited to investigate several methods of transporting backfill underground via pipeline, at higher densities (i.e. 75 to 95 wt.% solids). Three separate transport methods are presently being experimented with by the Company's Mines Research Department. Each utilizes a different technique or form of flow transport, i.e. concrete pumping technology, high density slurry flow, and pneumatic conveying."

"ABSTRACTSeveral case studies are presented on the use of seismic techniques to map active structures, evaluate changes in stress levels, and identify the conditions leading to large magnitude seismic events and the generation of rock-bursts in Canadian mines. The results suggest that microseismicity can be used to identify the orientation of active fractures; define regions of relatively high and low stress, and those most likely to host a rockburst; determine the role of local stress on observed shear failures; and identify the path of stress transfer associated with the remote triggering of rockbursts. Additionally, the conditions leading to rock-bursts can be characterized by a significant increase in the clustering of microseismic events along the fault plane orientation of an impending event, and an increase in the effective stress levels. It is concluded that the analysis of microseismicity provides the means for remotely monitoring rock mass behaviour as a result of mining."

"Large-diameter ball mills have traditionally used steel liners—steel being a highly durable material that can be shaped into any desired geometry, among which the double-wave has been the preferred design. Such a design produces a purely cascading charge motion, which is ideal for the shearing action needed to produce a finer product. Today, however, rubber liners, which have been in existence for over forty years, are now preferred over traditional steel, largely because they weigh less and are easier to maintain. In this paper, we show the operating data from the Hudbay Minerals’ Constancia Mine, wherein the liners on a 26-by-40-foot mill were changed from conventional steel liners to PolyStl™ liners. It is then shown that this change reduced the amount of energy consumed whilst being able to maintain previous grind and throughput levels. The design is verified via discrete element simulations.IntroductionThe Constancia Mine (“Our Business: Peru,” 2016) is located in the southeastern Andes of Peru, at an elevation of approximately 4,200 m. It can be accessed via the CU-126 road, about 95 km from the town of Espinar in Espinar Province. The mine also contains both the Constancia and Pampacancha deposits in the Province of Chumbivilcas. Hudbay Minerals, Inc. acquired the mine in 2011, through the purchase of Norsemont Mining, Inc. and currently retains sole ownership of the property. Production of the Constancia Mine began in 2014, with commercial production levels being achieved in April 2015.The Constancia and Pampacancha deposits primarily include hypogene, supergene, and skarn ores. The Mine’s main products, however, are copper concentrate, with silver contents, and molybdenum concentrate. These mineral reserves are expected to last approximately 22 years. Constancia’s open-pit mine supplies a processing plant that is designed for 81,900 metric tons per day of throughput. Average annual copper production is estimated to be 82,000 mT (contained metal in concentrate). Actual plant production can be found in Table 1."

"The neglect of including the toxic metal mercury in the list of escaping elements (Zodrow, CIM Bulletin, September 1982, pp. 138-140) was pointed out to the author in a private letter by J.E. Rehder, dated September 21, 1982. I welcome this opportunity to present my preliminary mercury research data based on coal investigations supported by N.S.E.R.C and the University College.As mercury is a volatile element and liquid at room temperature, special analytical techniques are required to determine concentrations in whole coal. In the investigation, the coal is analyzed by flameless atomic absorption with a lower detection limit of approximately 10 parts per billion, which, however, is a function of the ash contents of the coals (personal communication, J.L. Brooker, XRAL, 1981).Coal seams of the Sydney Coalfield studied so far include: the Point Aconi, a thin shaly coal, the Upper Bonar, an overrider of the Harbour seam, and the Harbour, Shoemaker and McAulay seams, all of which are shown in stratigraphic succession in Figure 1. The seams have been channel-sampled taking 15-cm coal intervals as one sample for analysis. One channel sample has been investigated from each of the seams listed (two channels were taken from the Point Aconi seam), resulting in 38 samples. Table 1 shows the results, which include mercury contents, ash and total sulphur per sample interval. Figure 2 is a frequency distribution of the 38 determinations."

"The goal of estimation is considered in the light of decision analysis. A simple example reveals the essential elements of decision-making in the face of uncertainty. A second example shows that these elements are also key features of many mining decisions. These two examples cause us to revive an old probabilistic notion that the goal of estimation should be to quantify what is unknown. The conditional probability distribution provides the complete statement of one's uncertainty. Once the conditional probability distribution has been established, one should retain as an estimate the value which minimizes some objective loss function. A third example shows how the ""best"" estimate depends on the chosen loss function. Current practice is almost exclusively based on the least squares method, which assumes a loss function which penalizes underestimation and overestimation equally. This is unfortunate not only because symmetry is an unrealistic assumption but also because mining offers a rare opportunity to state the loss function directly in terms of profitability. Both the theoretical framework and the practical tools exist to allow us to reconsider the conventional notion of the ""best"" estimate. IntroductionThis paper looks at estimation in the mining industry from the point-of-view of decision analysis. Virtually all decisions depend on estimates since few of the important parameters are ever known exactly. In this paper we will be referring mainly to the estimation of ore grades, though the approach discussed here is generally applicable to any decision in which relevant information is uncertain.In the first section we look at a very simple example of decision-making in the face of uncertainty. We will then tum to a mining example and see that the essential features of the simple example still pertain. From these two examples it will be clear that the decision analysis approach rests on two key concepts: the conditional probability distribution and the loss function. A third example demonstrates how different loss functions produce different ""best"" estimates from the same conditional probability distribution. In the final sections we willexamine the current practice of estimation in the mining industry. Though the tools for estimating the conditional probability distribution already exist, a change in the way we think about ""best"" estimates is needed. Very little attention is presently paid to the loss function even though it is readily available in many mining applications."

"The Raglan orebody and concentrator has been the subject of study in Process Mineralogy at Falconbridge since 1998. (Lotter and Tuzun, 1998) The orebody is classified into three distinct textural groups, or end members. These are referred to as disseminated, net-textured, and Massive Sulphides, and differ in terms of mineral grain size, nickel grade, hardness, and mineral association. In this paper, it will be shown that the sampling and characterisation of each end member on an individual basis develops a higher-level understanding of the processing requirements and behaviour of the mixture of ore as presented to the mill.The end members have been used in robust prediction of recovery at various grind size p80 from laboratory scale High Confidence Flotation Tests. Weighted mean mixtures of the end members have been mathematically combined to determine impact of textural distribution on metallurgical performance as a function of grind size.The ore end members also vary in hardness and breakage mechanism and have been used to model throughput capability for existing, optimized and retrofit grinding circuits. This modeling has provided a range of expected throughputs as the relative proportions of each end member varies.Finally, the differing grinding requirement per end member has led to the development of grinding and flotation strategy that increases rougher flotation recovery and provides flowsheet options for a concentrator expansion. This leads to further understanding of the plant performance as a function of ore mixture."

"Abstract - Gamma-ray spectrometry, an effective tool in geological mapping, was used to define boundaries between various lithological formations in three adjacent areas of Central Syria, namely, the Syrian Desert, Ar Rassafeh Badiayat and the Northern Palmyrides mountains. This paper describes the role of an airborne gamma spectrometric survey which was orginally undertaken to assist uranium exploration. Interpretation of the total count data obtained through the survey has led to significant modifications and corrections to the previously published distribution map of the palaeogene phosphate rocks.Another important result of the survey is the discovery of four previously unknown phosphorite horizons in the Rasm Al-Aawabed area of the Northern Palmyrides. In addition, previously unknown phosphatic horizons are outlined in the other study areas. The importance of this technique as an effective prospecting method, not only for U but also for exploring for the economically important phosphorite formations in Syria, is emphasized. Furthermore, its role in geological mapping is stressed, especially in areas that lack sufficient geological data."
