"The release of soluble salts of base metals from acid mine pits and in the waste water from metal refiners is an avoidable source local pollution and contamination. Tightening of the regulations controlling natural resource extraction and industrial wastewater discharge is mandating the removal and recovery of metals from waste streams, and the remediation of contaminated sites. There is an economic incentive in recovering the valuable copper and nickel, as the value of the recovered metal can offset remediation costs and for high flow waste streams can be a source of income. Extraction of metals from waste streams by conventional Ion Exchange and chelation resins is widely practised, but has limitations on applicability in complex and dilute feeds due to the structure and properties of polymeric resin beads. Composite Advanced Ion Exchange (AIX) materials have been developed for the recovery and purification of base metals from base metal mining and metal processing industries. A silica-composite based resin has been developed for the selective extraction of copper from high iron containing feeds. This resin can be eluted with sulfuric acid yielding a copper stream suitable for return to solvent extraction or to electrowinning. We describe the development and application of the resin and process to two acid mine drain feeds of varying copper and iron concentrations, and show that the copper concentration can be considerably upgraded even at small scale with a final metal content of >95% copper.INTRODUCTIONWaste water with high sulphate concentrations, low pH and containing complex and variable mixtures of metals is an inevitable product in the mining, extraction and metal refining industries. One problematical water source is Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) which in addition to the metals of interest also contains a wide range of contaminating elements. Purge streams from metal refining are less complex in composition but contain significant quantities of the value metals. The typical treatment of such waste streams is treatment with lime to increase the pH of the water, precipitating the dissolved metals and sulphate as a sludge of mixed metal oxides/hydroxides and sulphates. The process is effective in producing a water stream that can be safely discharged but if there are significant concentrations of value metals such as copper, nickel, zinc then there can be a considerable loss of metal value."

"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. Control of the feed provided to mineral processing facilities is a continuing challenge. Much effort is currently being devoted to overcoming these problems. These projects are usually described under the general headings of Mine-to-Mill Integration or Mine-Mill Optimization. It should be possible to combine the knowledge of ore type, mineralogy, and other characteristics (located in the mine modelling system), with the advanced capabilities of state-of-the-art mill control systems, to achieve an improved level of control in mineral processing, allowing optimization of the mill processes on an almost realtime basis. This is not happening because mill feed it is often treated as a uniform material, when in reality it varies in composition and characteristics. The University of Utah is investigating the use of odor sensors for maintaining traceability in ore production and processing. Odor sensors now used in food processing, environmental monitoring, and other applications can detect the presence of very small amounts (0.1 - 500 ppm) of some molecules. An assortment of such molecules could be used to ?tag? blocks of ore as they are mined, according to their respective characteristics. Then, as the ore came into the mill, an array of ?electronic noses? could be used to assess its characteristics in real time.

"This paper discusses general application for A C variable frequency drives in the mining industry. A review of induction motors characteristics, adjustable frequency controller fundamentals, and three commonly used controllers is presented. General application guidelines for the three different types of controllers; variable voltage input , current source input and pulse width modulated are then reviewed in detail, and an example of the economic benefit of this technology is discussed. IntroductionSoon after static DC variable speed drives were well established in industry, a need for static AC variable speed drives was seen. The first technical papers describing possible systems appeared in the mid-1960s, with commercially available units arriving in the early 1970s. Without exception, static AC drives are substantially more complex than their DC counterparts, but they have some very desirable properties. As compared to DC motors, AC motors are less costly, physically smaller, more reliable, require less maintenance , easily sealed, have good load regulation, are able to run at higher operating voltages, and have little danger of over-speed runaway . These properties are particularly desirable in explosion-proof, submersible or difficult accessibility applications.Variable speed AC drives are now a proven technology. available in packages from Sub-horsepower to hundreds of horsepower, from 115VAC to 4160 VAC. This paper covers the principles of operation of three common types of controllers, application criteria, motor consideration and finally an example of how an AC variable speed drive can pay for itself in terms of energy savings."

DURING the past year the Cadillac-Malanie area in northwestern Quebec has been catapulted to the front as one of Canada's most active gold mining districts. Late in 1934 the area was lolling along in the doldrums, with one producing mine and a handful of active prospects. 1935 passed with only slightly increased activity, but saw the start of production at Canadian Malartic mine. Lightning struck in April, 1936, when a new and phenomenally rich ore-body was found in O'Brien Gold mine, and by midsummer the camp was ablaze with activity. An important new discovery on the Pan-Canadian property, and pleasing underground developments at Sladen Malarric, East Malartic, and Lapa Cadillac, in addition to other new developments, lent fodder to the flame, and at present several dozen properties are being actively developed. For the past three seasons, the Geological Survey of Canada has been engaged in a fairly detailed study of the geology and mineral deposits across Cadillac, Malarric, and Fourniere townships. Ir is the purpose of this paper to present a brief preliminary statement of the structural and economic geology and to discuss some of the more important problems that have been found to exist. The reader is requested to remember that the paper is a preliminary one and that therefore the conclusions presented are open to revision. It is impossible to make full acknowledgment for help received, for the writers are indebted to practically every operator and prospector in the area for generous co-operation in the work, and to several private, provincial, and federal geologists for data and frank discussion of problems encountered. Over a score of student assistants from McGill, Queen's, and Toronto have given excellent service. Published reports by Wilson, Cooke, James, Mawdsley, L. V. Bell, and J. J. "LynnGold's MacLellan Mine is located about 8 km south east of Lynn Lake immediately to the east of the Keewatin River (Fig. I). The property is accessible by an all-weather road, leading north from the provincial highway 391, which links with the Town of Leaf Rapids and the City of Thompson to the south.The ore body, as outlined in the original feasibility study, is expected to produce in excess of 9.3 x IQ6 gm of gold and silver over the next 5 years. However, the deposit is open to depth and exploration is continuing on and around the main zone and the many satellite deposits.The start of construction of the MacLellan Mine and mill was scheduled to phase in with the closure of the Fox copper-zinc mine located 48 km west of Lynn Lake. The majority of the employees from the Fox Operation were either employed at the MacLellan Mine or relocated to Sherrin's Ruttan Operation.GeologyThe MacLellan gold ore deposit is located on the northern section of the Lynn Lake Greenstone Belt known as the Rainbow Trend. This Trend is a 40 km gold bearing rock sequence extending both east and west from the MacLellan Mine. The southern section of these two east-west trending structures is known as the Johnson Shear, this is also gold bearing."

"This article addresses the relationship between mine evaluation, the tax system, and economic risk. It is based on a paper presented by the author at recent seminars in Moscow and Tashkent on the subject of mine evaluation.IntroductionTaxation can have a strong influence on the feasibility of a mining project. For the most part, because metal prices are determined on a global basis, the mining concern is not able to pass on to its customers any portion of taxes which the concern has to pay. Taxes are a direct charge against the project. The purpose of the article is to highlight the various ways whereby different taxes can affect the financial viability of a mining operation.The first part of the paper identifies different forms of taxation, and the second part of the paper addresses the different forms of taxation in terms of risk analysis and impacts on the mining project. Finally, the third part of the paper makes brief mention of using the taxation system to provide incentives with respect to investment in mining activities."

Excessive vibration is known to have an adverse affect on soft body tissue and operators of heavy mining equipment can be exposed to vibration that exceeds levels recommended in international guidelines (ISO 2631-1, for example). Research has found that many of the seat and suspension systems currently used in mine haul trucks and load haul dump vehicles are actually amplifying the vibration. This overview presentation will outline the current research being conducted at Laurentian University and the University of Western Ontario, and the roles of partners in rating the ability of a number of commonly used mine vehicle seats to isolate harmful vibration.

"Approximately 2.0 million tonnes of phosphate rock is imported from the U.S. to Alberta annually and is used in the production of agricultural fertilizers. No phosphate rock is presently mined in Canada, although sources of igneous phosphate have been mined in the past. Sedimentary phosphate rock is found in nine geological units within the Cordilleran Foothills and Front Ranges region of Alberta. The Devonian-Mississippian Exshaw Formation, Permo-Pennsylvanian Rocky Mountain Supergroup, and the Jurassic Fernie Formation have the best potential f or future development. Most of the phosphate rock in Alberta is of low grade and lies within restricted land use areas. The best over-all resource potential lies in the Fernie basin area of southeastern British Columbia, in the Fernie Formation. The possibility of deep phosphate rock deposits in the plains region should be examined.Phosphate rock is mined in Idaho, Utah, Montana and Florida, and is shipped to Canadian fertilizer plants for processing. Raw phosphate rock is acidified, usually with sulphuric acid, by a wet process. Varying amounts of ammonia are added, and the fertilizer is pelletized. Future research, in western Canada, is needed in the beneficiating of low-grade ores and in the area of in situ mining. At the present time, phosphate rock sells for around US$50Itonne, and Alberta fertilizer companies probably pay in the range of C$7D-$85Itonne for U.S. phosphate rock delivered to the plant. Environmental concerns about phosphate rock processing are centred around gypsum tailing ponds, and radioactive wastes.U.S. supplies of phosphate rock are secure until the year 2000; however, by this time, the richer deposits in the U.S. may be exhausted. Alternate deposits, such as the ones in Alberta and British Columbia, might then be considered. Phosphate byproducts, such as uranium, vanadium, fluorine and rare earth elements, may help in making the processing of low-grade Canadian phosphates economically feasible."

"The decision to proceed with mine decommissioning, generally involves a number of complex and independent factors. These factors, including potential for re-opening, legal requirements, contingent liability, asset depreciation, due diligence, and public relations are discussed in the context of the financial implications on a net-present- value basis. It is concluded that the decision to delay mine decommissioning is commonly not in the best financial interests of the mine operator. Some measures to reduce decommissioning costs and expedite the process are presented.IntroductionThe primary audience for this paper is mining executives, although it should be of interest to all professionals involved in the planning and carrying out of mine decommissioning. Historically, mines were abandoned, not decommissioned. Then, as decommissioning became required, it was assumed that salvage revenue would pay for decommissioning. During the I980s, it became apparent that mine decommissioning costs would exceed salvage revenue for nearly all sites, and that a substantial net cost for decommissioning would be realized for some sites. Throughout this period, the approach to decommissioning has evolved through the sequential addition of measures to meet the increasing regulatory burden. This has resulted in a process in which the elements of decommissioning may not be optimized with respect to each other for the most favourable net present value to the corporation. Additional considerations which are not specific to mine decommissioning, such as environmental policy, due diligence and public relations, may now come to bear on the decision-making process.This paper addresses the issue of mine decommissioning as a three-step process. The first step involves identification and evaluation of all of the issues that relate to mine closure, the most importantof which is the potential for re-opening of a mine. Assuming that it is decided that a mine is unlikely to re-open, the second step is to determine when to carry out the decommissioning work. This aspect is examined through a net present value (NPV) approach. Finally, details regarding who does the work and how the various tasks are divided up must be resolved.Every mine is a unique concentration of minerals at some specific location, hence the development, operation and closure of a given mine must be regarded as a special case. Superimposed on the site-specific considerations are the size, history and financial status of the associated corporation."

"The CIM Careers Task Force has addressed industry's concern of a perceived shortage of skilled personnel over the coming decade. The industry is faced with a fundamental shift by young Canadians away from scientific and engineering careers, coupled with the fact that today 's students know little about the minerals industry and have a poor image of it.The responses to two questionnaires which were distributed to CIM members, government, professional associations, and educational institutions, formed the backbone of the Task Force position paper, which presents a shopping list of ideas and initiatives for consideration and to facilitation by the various organizations concerned.Tackling the image of the minerals industry is part of the answer to the careers crisis. On the positive side, the minerals industry provides the allure of a treasure hunt for young people and is seen as a significant contributor to the economy. It is understood to be well paying, provide good opportunities for advancement, individualism, and travel, and to be rich in esprit de corps. Enhancement of these positive aspects of the image can take place at all student age levels.Numerous initiatives tackle the negative aspects of the image. Young people perceive the industry to be environmentally damaging, which is the most crucial aspect that needs to be addressed. The industry is seen as still in the pick-and-shovel days and as a sunset industry that is running out of ore. Work in the minerals industry is perceived as dangerous and lacking glamour. And finally, the perceived remoteness of operations and exploration is seen as a drawback to a largely urbanized student group.Tackling young peoples' curiosity and interest in the minerals industry throughout grade school and encouraging postsecondary science and engineering students to enter the minerals industry by ensuring summer employment is the second part of the equation.The CIM Careers Task Force position paper develops strategy to attract and maintain interest of students in grade school, junior high, senior high school, and in post-secondary levels. The strategy outlines initiatives targetted at each of the educational levels and action plans to accomplish the objectives."

Material scheduling, sequencing planning and execution are the core tactical mine plan for achieving production targets that maximize the objective function of any mine production entity. This objective function is constrained by several exogenous and endogenous constraints including geological, operating, technological, marketing, financial, political, social and local field constraints. Linear and dynamic programming techniques have been used to formulate algorithms to solve the problems associated with scheduling and sequencing operations. These algorithms possess the mathematical rigor for dealing with the fundamental problems but they fail to provide adequate answers to random and dynamic process problems. Materials scheduling and sequencing are carried out within the bounds of random and dynamic fields. The functional relations between the output and dependent variables are random, and thus, current algorithms are limited in their abilities to address the problems arising from these random field processes. In this study a production simulator is developed to capture the random field process associated with materials scheduling and sequencing in an open pit environment. The algorithm incorporates a geometric pit evolution model, using solid geometry of an ellipsoidal frustum to capture material displacement dynamics. Taylor series expansion about the dimensions of the initial frustum is used to provide numerical solutions to the resulting partial differential equations governing the pushback dynamics. A production simulator, derived from the stochastic and dynamic models, is developed, validated and used to simulate the changes in the pit volume resulting from periodic incremental pushbacks and the random field process. The hybrid stochastic-optimization algorithm provides a powerful tool for addressing the random field and dynamic process problems. Combined with a hybrid stochastic-optimization dispatch system, tactical production planning and execution will be efficient and economic for achieving desired.

A clarification technology used by municipalities to produce high-quality drinking water, polish sewage treatment plant effluent and handle combined sewer overflows has recently found new applications in the mines and iron and steel industry. This patented process, known as ACTIFLO®, utilizes microsand in a ballasted flocculation process to enhance the settling characteristics of suspended solids, increasing the efficiency sufficiently to achieve a clarifier footprint that is smaller than the one of a conventional clarifier. ACTIFLO® rise rates vary from 40 to 170 m/h with a total system hydraulic retention time of about 10 minutes. The result is a clarification system so compact that a full-scale system can operate as a trailer-mounted unit for temporary applications or as a permanent installation in facilities with space limitations. This paper explains the process and presents case studies in which this innovative technology was used at mines and steelmaking facilities to meet compliance requirements.

Shallow-dipping orebodies (45°–60° dip) present significant challenges for underground longhole stoping, particularly due to limited gravity flow, drill misalignment near the footwall, increased potential for dilution from hanging wall overbreak, and deviation from drill string sagging at shallow angles. These geometrical and operational constraints often lead to unblasted ore wedges and excessive overbreak when standard practices are applied. This study develops a structured, data-driven framework to optimize longhole stoping in such conditions by integrating five key focus areas: (1) mining method selection, (2) stope and drift design, (3) drill and blast optimization, (4) equipment selection, and (5) performance evaluation. The suitability of longitudinal longhole stoping was validated for narrow vein geometries using orebody analytics and prior case studies. Geometric modeling was employed to determine optimal stope height (15–20 m) and stope width (1.5–2.5 m), with drift widths adjusted based on orebody dip to maintain drill access and minimize unbroken ore. Drill and blast design emphasized sequential blasting over multi-ring methods to improve void control, reduce wall damage, and enhance fragmentation. Specific burden and spacing guidelines (e.g., 1.8–2.3 m burden; 2.5–3.0 m spacing) were applied based on stope width and dip angle, and patterns were selected based on geometry—dice-5 for narrow stopes, and 3-hole rows for wider stopes. Drill rigs—including top hammer and ITH models from Sandvik, Epiroc, Boart Longyear and CMAC-Thyssen—were evaluated for compatibility with drift dimensions and alignment accuracy. Equipment was matched based on dip, drift width, and the ability to access the footwall at shallow angles. Sensitivity analysis quantified how changes in geometry, drilling accuracy, and blast design affect ore recovery, dilution, and operating cash flow. Results show that tailored drift and stope geometries, combined with proper blasting and rig selection, can boost ore recovery to over 95% and reduce dilution to below 5% in optimal conditions. This methodology offers a practical and economically optimized solution for shallow-dip mining scenarios.
