"Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel Project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Québec. The nickel and copper concentrates are filtered by plate and frame filter presses, and are transported 100km north to Deception Bay by truck. As the site is situated in the far north, extreme weather can be detrimental to production: roads can close for significant periods of time, resulting in the concentrator using all its storage capacity. During the winter of 2017, this accounted for over 100 hours of unplanned mill downtime. Different solutions to this problem were evaluated and the most economically viable combination of solutions was determined to be the use of concentrate storage containers and upgrading the plate size of the existing nickel filter press. By satisfying new, increased utility requirements, the cycle times would not change, but produce 30% more filter cake. Simulations were developed to determine the number of concentrate containers needed in conjunction with the upgraded press to eliminate unplanned downtime due to road closures and secure production through the winter. This paper summarises these simulations, the commissioning and start-up of the upgraded filter press, container loading procedures, and how this was put together to achieve a record 2018 winter season with a 90 percent reduction in downtime. The payback period of the project was 4 months. A specialised side-tipping trailer emptied the containers during the fall of 2018.INTRODUCTION The Nunavik Nickel Project is a nickel/copper mining project located in Nunavik, Québec. The nickel and copper concentrates are stored in stock tanks after thickening and are then filtered by plate and frame filter presses at the concentrator before being transported 100km to the shipping port at Deception Bay by trucks. The region is prone to periods of extreme weather during the winter, with winds that can reach +100km/hr and blizzards that severely limit visibility. The roads to Deception Bay are often affected by this weather, causing closures that last an average of 18hrs and as long as 72hrs. Additionally, there is a 15% chance that road closures occur within 24hrs of the last event. This has been an issue for the concentrator team since start-up in 2013, causing unplanned mill downtime every winter (Table 1) due to filling concentrate storage capacity during prolonged closures of the roads to Deception Bay."

"A model was developed to use near-infrared (NIR) analysis of pulverized ore samples to estimate the recoverable gold content for ores from the Barrick Cortez Hills underground mine. Current routing practices use a ratio of the cyanide soluble gold content and fire assayed gold (CN/FA) to classify ores as oxide or refractory. Prediction accuracy of the NIR model was equivalent to the CN/FA ratio. Prediction accuracy was improved by combining the CN/FA ratio and the NIR spectra. Bootstrap validation estimates the root-mean-square error to be 9.92% with an estimated r-squared value of 0.893. This model will allow more accurate estimates of the variability in recoverable gold content throughout this mine. These data will aid in building an improved geo-metallurgical model or in making better informed routing decisions during the production cycle.INTRODUCTION The contained gold of an ore available for cyanidation is often related to subtle variations in the mineralogy. It is difficult and expensive to collect enough mineralogical information in order to predict how the variable mineralogy will impact the metallurgical results and project economics throughout the life of the mine or mill. Near-infrared spectroscopy may be an effective tool to rapidly and inexpensively collect discrete, quantitative mineralogical data for minerals that contain transition metal oxides, metal sulfides with semi-conduction properties, rare earth metals, and some chemical groups having di-pole covalent bonds such as carbonates, sulfates, and various types of clays (Hunt, 1977). Near-infrared spectroscopy can be a powerful tool for geo-metallurgical characterization of deposits where the presence of these minerals has direct or indirect relationships to metallurgical results such as grindability, regent consumption, or recovery. Near infrared spectroscopy is a rapid analysis that measures the intensity of reflected light in the near-infrared spectrum. The ranges for the ASD-Panalytical units used in this study extend through the visible spectrum and into part of the UV spectrum, reporting reflection by wavelength from between 350 nm to 2500 nm. Absorption peaks visible in this range are a result of interactions with outer valence elections or chemical bonds. The location and intensity of the peaks vary depending on the chemical composition and crystal structure of a solid indicating the presence and abundance certain minerals (Hunt, 1977; Clark, 1984)."

"Slope construction in shale can present some interesting challenges for geotechnical design engineers and contractors alike. There are challenges that can be expected and designed-for; however, all too frequently, such challenges manifest themselves as “surprises” in the field. Common constructability challenges can include those such as drill hole deviation during drilling for controlled blasting; and, excavation slope instability arising from inconsistent perimeter control drilling. Drill hole deviation results from the cumulative effects from both drilling mechanics and rock mass conditions. Once a hole has initiated the deviation trajectory, it is difficult to rectify drill steel position. Although such challenges are not necessarily unique to shale, they are often exacerbated by weak, weathered and transversely isotropic nature of bedrock conditions. All too often, the working assumption is that shale is “soft” and easily excavatable; however, this blanket assumption can prove to be costly. This paper is intended to provide design professionals and contractors with the practical considerations needed to avoid the “surprises” associated with drill hole deviation, and minimize the potential for costly claims.INTRODUCTIONFor all the slopes that have been excavated worldwide, and for such advancements in excavation technology and field characterization, one might be tempted to believe that the industry almost has slope development down to a science. This is frequently not the case, especially for weak/weathered and anisotropic bedrock. Excavation contractors are still pushed to the limits of what their technology can achieve, and engineers are all too often called to the field during construction, to make potentially risky onthe- fly decisions relative to excavatability, short and long-term slope stability, and project safety. Although there have been a host of other research papers and journal articles that have been written on the subject of deviation over the past 30 years (Brown, Geen, Sinha, 1981), the problems associated with drill hole deviation are still all too frequent. "The property of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company; Limited; is in the Wells-Barkerville district of Cariboo mining division. It consists of a group of 106 Crown granted mineral claims and fractions; and extends for over 6 miles along what is termed the Barkerville gold belt. The main portal and mine camp are half a mile south of Wells; which lies at the northeast end of Jack of Clubs lake and is reached by a 55-mile motor road from Quesnel; the northern terminus of the Pacific Great Eastern railway.Gold-bearing quartz veins were discovered on the surface in various parts of the property by different prospectors as far back as 1877, but the work that led to the formation of the present company was performed by Al Sanders in the year 1926. Sanders dug trenches and drove small adits on quartz veins containing gold above what is now known as the Sanders zone. Very little underground work has been done beneath the earliest known discovery-the B.C. vein. The Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company was formed in the autumn of 1926. At last year's Annual Meeting a paper by Haultain and Johnston was presented entitled Is the Gold in Tellttrides Soluble in Cyanide? Since then the writer has continued the study of various phases of this problem. Samples and specimens of ore from some of the Kirkland Lake mines have been studied and non gold-bearing tellurides have been found in these that are not soluble in ordinary mill solutions. Samples of tailings, both old and recent, from this district have been examined with apparatus and methods that have proved very successful in detecting the presence of extremely minute quantities of tellurides. Tellurides, both base-metal and gold-bearing, have been discovered in these tailings, but only in such minute quantities that their presence would not affect the ordinary assay results. More free gold particles have been found in the tailings than gold-bearing tellurides. Much experimental work has been done on tellurides, concentrated from high-grade material and from ordinary run-of-mine ore. The gold-bearing tellurides behave very much as does gold itself. Finely divided particles are dissolved fairly rapidly, coarser particles more slowly. All the tellurides are soft and brittle and also have a high specific gravity, with the result that they are extremely finely divided in ordinary mill practice. The ordinary high-lime solution of Kirkland Lake practice is suitable for the dissolving of the gold tellurides. Oxygen is necessary, but apparently not more so than in dissolving gold. Some particles have been found that appear under the microscope to be ordinary metallic gold particles, but on heating they show a small telluride content. These appear to dissolve more slowly than gold. There is considerable variation in the ratio of tellurides to gold from different points in the mines. So far the writer has failed to find any connection between this ratio and the richness of the ore. Generally speaking, the base-metal tellurides predominate. Some of these contain gold but this may be due to a mixture of tellurides in the one particle.

The Polokwane Smelter Complex (PSC) relies on a single 68MW high-intensity six-in-line furnace to smelt a planned 650 000 t/a dry concentrate to produce a platinum group metals (PGM)-bearing matte. As typical of a greenfields venture, considerable attention was paid to the project development and implementation stages of design, engineering, construction and commissioning. Somewhat unusual though, was the role of a dedicated multi-disciplinary "Operational Readiness" and support team, comprising the owners team and specialists from the furnace designer, HATCH, to effect a safe and rapid ramp-up to the design smelter capacity of 68MW. The challenges encountered in developing an effective partnership will be discussed. The modus operandi and roles of the "Operational Readiness" team during the design, procurement, construction and commissioning stages as well as that of the operational support team within the overall ramp-up objective will be presented. "Relationships, Partnerships,Marriages (RPM)RPM has a nice musical ring to it, but it is in fact synonymous with science and technology, university-government -corporate links and the more genera l issue of university roles in technology development. Pick up any report on one of these issues, and chances are that you will find one of these key words in the title. Play it, and you will find that the revolutions per minute are increasing. It is difficult to keep track of the wide variety of institutional experiments now developing in Canadian universities in attempts to marry science and research with technology commercialization and technology transfer.Why is the role of Canadian universities in this matter important? There are at least five good reasons:1. It is important because these knowledge institutions are producer s of scientific research, a major component of technology. Today the gap between the two is rapidly shrinking.2. It ' is important because Canadian industry is turning to universities for tech no logy development and new knowledge. Figure 1 shows that universities are becoming an important source of technology available to Canadian firm s; more important in fact than government. Figure 2 illustrates this trend more graphically in showing that university collaboration is one of the preferred methods of industry participating in co-operative R&D efforts:3. The role of Canadian universities in technology development is also important because the provincial and federal governments have embarked on various programs and policies for promoting the use of technology and science for economic benefit. Universities are playing an increasing role here. For example, the submission of IDEA Corporation (a venture capital operation funded by the government) in Ontario to the Bovey Commission on the Future Development of Ontario Universities clearly spelled out its ideas for commercialization of university research in Ontario . Among other things, the brief suggested that Ontario's universities need to be better equipped to transfer technology, and the reward structure in university research must incorporate industrial interests."

The volatilization behavior of heavy metal in electric ash melting furnaces has a strong relation with its distribution between molten salt and slag. In this study, the distribution ratios of heavy metals between molten salt and slag phases were measured using a hermetic cell. The experimental results showed a relatively rapid loss of Pb and Zn from the salt in the first few hours followed by slow heavy metal vaporization with an almost fixed metal distribution between molten salt and slag. The distribution ratios of Pb and Zn decreased with increasing slag basicity. The mechanism of this effect can be explained by the chlorinated reaction of PbO and ZnO by CaC12.

Effective blast fragmentation is essential in underground mining, as it directly influences downstream processing efficiency and operational expenses. This study investigates the application of Non-Newtonian Fluids (NNF) as stemming materials, presenting a novel method to enhance energy confinement, minimize environmental impact, and optimize blast performance. NNFs exhibit shear-thickening behaviour, enabling them to transition between fluid-like and solid-like states under stress, which renders them suitable for regulating explosive gas ejection during blasting. Field trials were performed by Vale Base Metals in Thompson, Manitoba, in their underground nickel mine to evaluate conventional slag stemming against NNF-based stemming in production-scale blasts. Emulsion explosives were employed, and blast performance was assessed through velocity of detonation (VOD) measurements, vibration monitoring, and AI-assisted fragmentation analysis using WipFrag. Preliminary results indicate that NNF stemming improves fragmentation, resulting in a reduction of D50 by as much as 38%, enhances energy confinement, and may decrease the incidence of hole plugging and re-drilling in subsequent blasts. This study presents an alternative to conventional stemming methods, highlighting potential advantages for enhanced safety, efficiency, and sustainability in blasting operations. Additional research and field trials are necessary to improve implementation protocols and facilitate the widespread adoption of this unique method in the mining sector.

"Since the most of mineral processing are wet, and for more specific applications where it is necessary to increase the purity through leaching and / or concentration, the proper dispersion is the first, and perhaps more crucial stage in the whole chain of processing. This specific process is based on the formation of a dispersion or suspension of mineral, trying to make the mixture as homogeneous as possible, and with specific rheological conditions. Sometimes it is not enough agitation to make it happen, so that chemical additives are used as an aid. However, the addition of chemicals strongly alters the viscosity and other rheological properties of the suspension factor to consider for subsequent steps to ore beneficiation. In other hand, in a process where no chemicals used often employ large quantities of water to achieve dispersion. But if an efficient chemical agent, which optimizes said dispersion through a specific physicochemical effect on the particle surface is used, also it can generate rheological advantages, besides achieving rational use of water and increase the recoveries of the product main about also optimal costs. The aim of this work is to find the optimal rheological conditions for a dispersion of kaolin as study case, looking for stability, best disaggregation, viscosity and pseudoplasticity.To find the optimal additive, the evaluation parameters were: 1) Best degree of dispersion of the suspensions according to the analysis of the flow curve; 2) Best level of disaggregation of particle chemical analysis delaminated by Particle Size Distribution; and 3) Best thixotropic rheological parameters and pseudoplasticity. Finally the optimum additive as one that meets the best combination of parameters is proposed.INTRODUCTIONKaolin is a clay material formed by altering of feldspar composed mainly for kaolinite. Depending on the application, the kaolin as raw material must be refined and processed because the ores of clays contain usually a lot of impurities derived of its sedimentary source, such as feldspar, mica and quartz (Torres, et. al., 2011). According to the experience on the plant floor and the publication of several scientific papers, it is known that the dispersion is a crucial stage in mineral processing (Greene, Duke, & Hunter, 1965) (Raghavan, et. al., 2004), not only because of the disaggregation of particles, besides because of the humectation of them. Is clear that disaggregation of particles give to the suspensions rheological stability, and the humectation improves the effect of further processes like grinding or chemical treatment. The dispersion process involves making a suspension of the mineral with a solvent which is usually water, to obtain a homogeneous dispersion, with the aid of energy of stirring. Sometimes is not enough the agitation (even with high energy) for this to occur, so is necessary the use of dispersing substances which introduce ions and molecules as modifiers of chemical potential, forcing the molecules of the material to disperse. Sometimes their use even could affect the pH of the suspension in a non-desirable condition. (Flores, 2013)."

"Real-time, on belt analysis of minerals is becoming increasingly important and critical in modern operations, especially in the mine-to-mill. Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis has long been utilised for real-time elemental analysis in bulk materials, with Scantech's GEOSCAN being the instrument of choice in the minerals sector. Working in the minerals space for 15 years, the GEOSCAN has been successfully implemented in a wide range of minerals applications including iron, copper, lead-zinc, manganese, phosphate and more, and it caters for the very high demands and increasing requirements of a contemporary processing facility. An area of focus has been on increasing the analysis frequency to allow for rapid analysis results with the same high degree of accuracy typically expected of the GEOSCAN. This paper discusses the underlying research and technology that has enabled such rapid analysis and presents a range of examples using a thorough statistical approach on real production material, demonstrating achievable accuracy over a short analysis time, and dispelling common myths about the speed of the technique. Potential applications are discussed to conclude the paper.INTRODUCTION Technology and the information it can provide plays a critical role in the evolving modern mineral processing landscape. The importance of technology to analyse various features of ores and concentrates being processed is obvious, and recent years has seen the advance of numerous technologies to provide a variety of real-time measurements on conveyed material flows. From sampling apparatus to particle size analysis to weight and density meters to full elemental analysis, the availability of information enables a variety of improvements in the process leading to improved efficiency and increased revenue. To maximise the potential benefits, access to real-time information is imperative, and rapid updates of information become necessary to make appropriate process control decisions based on the most relevant and up-to-date information."

"The outlook for Eastern Canada is decreased coal production and for Western Canada increased production. The market for Western coal is expected to reach 40 million tons per year in metallurgical and thermal-power markets.Technical developments in Eastern Canada include successful methane drainage experiments, modifications to the shearer-loader to improve cutting rates, mechanized mining of a tail-gate stable and mechanical stowage of level brushing. In Western Canada, the most modern equipment is used in mining, beneficiating and shipping coal. Underground hydraulic experiments were started in 1969. The importance of reclamation was recognized and plans have been made to re-vegetate disturbed areas and mine dumps.The Mining Research Centre closed the field office in Nova Scotia and is preparing to open a new field office in Calgary, Alberta."

"The past 14 years have brought an increased awareness of environmental problems. Surface mining for mineral aggregates has been one o f the issues which ha s sparked fierce controversy and debate. Various level s of government, industry, and the public have engaged in an unending battle for adequate planning, regulation, and rehabilitation of pits and quarries. Agreement has seldom been reached and, as a result, few standards, guidelines or policies have been established, or enforced province-wide.Surface mining ca uses a number of environmental problems including noise, dust, water table disturbances, aesthetic degradation, increased traffic, and health and safety hazards. These problems are particularly serious in urbanizing area s, where people are exposed to the mining operations. Associated with the operational phase of surface mining are the issues generated by the multiplicity of abandoned pits and quarries which dot the countryside. These large, gaping, often dangerous waterfilled holes are a blight o n the landscape, and represent a misuse of land.The environmental problems connected with pit s and quarries are compounded by the fact that accessible reserves of mineral aggregates are being lost through the process o f urbanization. In addition, restrictive zoning at the municipal level is restricting access to even more aggregate rich land. This results in the paradox that the very urbanizing process which creates the demand for aggregates is rapidly reducing the available supply. These problems have stimulated the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to call for a province-wide program of inventory, assessment and planning for the protection o f high-quality reserves in Official Plans. These proposals have met with strong opposition from municipal leaders, who are jealously protecting their autonomy.Environmental management education is a prerequisite for all parties involved in pit and quarry planning, regulation or rehabilitation. Stable mining operations commenced in the Northwest Territories in 1933. Pitchblende from Great Bear lake and gold from the Yellowknife district are the main minerals produced. The value of pitchblende products produced from 1933 to 1941 was nearly $6; 000; 000; data on subsequent production are not available. The first gold was produced from the Con mine at Yellowknife in 1938. Other properties that later came into production include the Negus; Slave Lake; Thompson Lundmark; and Ptarmigan mines. The annual gold production reached $3; 862; 000 in 1942 but due to the war and consequent labour shortage fell to $333; 218 in 1945. The only producing mines at present (May; 1947) are the Con and Negus; but several promising properties are under development; including that of Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines where large tonnages of ore are being blocked out. With the reopening of former producing mines and new production from properties now being developed; gold production should rapidly increase and exceed its former peak within the next few years.

"Drums containing 0.07 m3 of pyritic waste rock from a zinc/copper mine, with and without Natural Phosphate Rock (NPR) additions (40 kg/t waste rock) were set up outdoors. The effluent chemistry has been monitored over a period of 709 days. In the presence of NPR, the cumulative acidity discharged from 7 out of 8 drums was 80 % less than that discharged from drums without NPR. Mixing NPR throughout the drums was more effective in reducing acidity than placement of the NPR in a layer in the drum. NPR treatment was more effective for 'fresh' waste rock than for material which had weathered for more than 4 years. It is concluded that application of NPR to pyritic waste rock could greatly reduce acidity generated.IntroductionWaste rock dumps are significant sources of acid, generated by the oxidation of sulphides. Oxygen and water supply are oxidation rate-controlling factors, and oxygen supply is the reaction-limiting component. If secondary minerals can be formed on the surface of the rocks, pyrite oxidation and therefore acid generation may be reduced or inhibited. Neutralizing agents such as limestone do not prevent the oxidation of pyrite but treat the resultant acid mine drainage (AMD) or acid rock drainage (ARD).Meek et al. (1991) determined in pilot scale experiments that apatite mixed with tailings was more cost effective than liming or use of PVC liners to reduce oxygen and water penetration into the tailings. Phosphate is not acting as a neutralising agent but it creates a chemical condition on pyritic surfaces which prevents reactions of the oxidising agents. Precipitation of principally iron phosphates physically isolates the pyrite surfaces from further oxidation (Ziemkiewicz 1990; Evangelou 1994). The chemistry of the phosphate effects has been described by Spotts and Dollhopf (1990). Secondary mineral formation was evident in the leach pile at Gibraltar when leaching was impaired (Scott, 1991) indicating a link between oxidation and the mineral-formation process. This paper reports on effluent characteristics when waste rock is generating acid in the presence of NPR."

Being a mining company, Assarel-Medet has a significant impact upon the environmental components. In order to meet the legal requirements and the requirements stipulated by the effective permits as well as to reduce the environmental imprint throughout the years, the policy of the company to implement a number of projects to improve the environmental components quality and the environmental state in the company?s region. The projects associated with atmospheric air quality management and reduction of the impact exercised by Assarel-Medet JSC by implementing various measures to eliminate the potential sources of the impact, preventive and rehabilitation initiatives as well as organizational and administrative activities are among the most important ones. A stable improvement of atmospheric air quality in the region and minimization of the company impact upon the ground air state in the region was observed in the period from 2005 to 2012 due to the applied measures. This project is a contribution to the environmental protection, in particular to atmospheric air protection, by applying integral monitoring and modeling methods to identify the negative impact by the mining companies and plan measures to reduce and restrict it as well as to improve the quality of the environment and living area of people working and living in the impact range as an element of sustainable development.

The Beaverlodge uranium mining and milling facilities operated from 1952 to 1981 with about 94% of the ore extracted from the main underground mine and 6% from smaller satellite deposits. Decommissioning work occurred from 1982 to 1985 involving periods of shutdown, salvage and reclamation. Transition phase monitoring, leading to eventual delicencing commenced in July 1985. Over the last 15 years, discharge from the tailings management facility (TMF) and a fresh water stream, impacted during the operational phase by tailings spills, has improved in water quality for most parameters of concern. Loadings to the environment of three key contaminants (radium-226, total dissolved solids, and uranium) have consistently been less than during the operational phase with radium-226 having the greatest variability. Outstanding environmental issues associated with the recovering drainage system formerly used for tailings disposal, are being addressed in an enhanced environmental monitoring program to commence in 2000. Changes in water chemistry and the natural re-introduction of aquatic organisms are issues of concern. In the meantime, application for release from selected satellite areas commenced in 1999. This paper reviews the issues which have arisen during the transition phase, outlines how they have and are being addressed, and provides a comparison of original and current predictions of the recovery process under way at the former Beaverlodge mine site.

Pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations have been in commercial use at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery of Sherritt International Corporation for fifty years. This paper traces the history of Sherritt from its origins in northern Manitoba, and the development of the first hydrometallurgical nickel-cobalt refinery in 1954, utilizing pressure hydrometallurgy, to the modern day refinery. Sherritt's involvement with pressure hydrometallurgy during the past 50 years has included the operation of the refinery, the development and licensing of technology, incorporating pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations, to more than 30 companies worldwide, the joint venture at Moa, Cuba involving both leaching and precipitation at elevated temperature and pressure, and the production of specialty metal powders. Developments in each of these areas are reviewed.
