"INTRODUCTIONWestern Mines' copper-lead-zinc operations are located in Strathcona Provincial Park, near the geographic centre of Vancouver Island. This park includes Buttle Lake, which flows into the Campbell River water system. The latter provides domestic water for the Town of Campbell River, approximately fifty-eight miles from the mine site.Operation of the concentrator commenced in December 1966, at which time the tailings were discharged into a small tailings pond near the plant. On May 8, 1967 Permit No. 185 was granted to the company, allowing discharge of the tailings, through a submerged outfall, to the bottom of Buttle Lake.Needless to say, the concept of operating a mine within a park, and the discharge of tailings into Buttle Lake generated considerable controversy. However, this has all but been eliminated over the years by the proven effectiveness of Western Mines' pollution control program. In 1973 this program was further upgraded with the addition of an alkaline chlorination plant. Effluent treatment by this method became necessary as a result of process modifications, and has been effective in maintaining the levels of characteristics in the tailings within the ever increasing pollution control requirements imposed on the industry."

"Manufacturing of Jaw CrushersOriginIn 1858 Eli Whitney Blake invented the first successful mechanical rock breaker-the Blake-type jaw crusher. Blake adapted a mechanical principal, the powerful toggle linkage system used to transform rotating motion and energy into oscillating mot ion and tremendous compressive forces. Today these same principals apply and the basic Blake-type jaw crusher is one of the leading machines of its class for heavy duty primary crushing service.In 1881 Philetus W. Gates patented a design for a crusher, the forerunner of the modern gyratory crusher which dominated the field from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. In 1910 the largest gyratory crushers built had 48-inch openings. However, about this time the jaw crusher came to life when the Power and Mining Machinery Co. built an even larger sized opening crusher-a giant 84-inch by 60-inch jaw crusher for a trap rock quarry in Pennsylvania. A 24-inch gyratory crusher became the ideal sized secondary machine for this size jaw. From that time on jaw crushers were looked on favourably as primary breakers and lines were brought up to date to parallel the already developed gyratory lines.FunctionMost heavy duty Blake-type jaw crushers work basically the same way. They are ruggedly designed and capable of crushing material in some cases in excess of 80, 000 p.s.i. compressive strength. They are very simple machines with few moving part s and, with the exception of replacement of renewable parts, are relatively maintenance free. It is quite common to have these machines in product ion for 20 to 30 years. The following will de scribe how these machines work. Large-diameter high-inertia flywheels which are connected to the main eccentric shaft, rotate inside a connecting rod type mechanism called a Pitman. It transforms rotating motion into vertical oscillating motion. This vertical motion is in turn transformed into reciprocating mot ion by means of a system of 2 toggles, each connected to the Pitman. The rear toggle is connected to the fixed rear head, and the front toggle is connected to the swing jaw which is hinged at the top of the crusher. With each rotation of the eccentric shaft the swing jaw opens and closes on rock which is fed into the crusher chamber, crushing the rock in a series of bites. These bites, or strokes as the y are called, usually vary between 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch at speeds of 120 to 200 strokes per minute. The reduction ratio of feed input to discharge is usually about 8 to I. Output capacities can vary from 100 tons/hour to 1200 tons/hour depending on the size of machine and its discharge opening. Horsepower requirements can vary from 75 hp to 400 hp.The entire crusher chamber is lined with replaceable 14070 manganese steel liner plates. This material is ideally suited for the job since it hardens as it wears during crusher operation. Manganese is also used in the high wear areas at each end of the toggle plates."

"Kidd Creek Mines places approximately 10 000 tonnes of consolidated rockfill on a daily basis. Consolidated rockfill is comprised of sized aggregate mixed with different ratio and amounts of binders. Consolidated rockfill, with closely controlled specification, is employed for subsequent pillar recovery and improved passive active/ ground support. With the same amount of cementing agents consolidated rockfill mass yields a higher, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, cohesion, and angle of friction compared to a typical cemented hydraulic fill mass.The consolidated rockfill at Kidd Creek Mines is designed to sustain not only the gravitational loading of the overlaying fill material, but also to some extent the dynamic loading applied during blasting of the adjacent stopes and/or pillars.The quality control of materials used in Kidd Creek's rockfill system could be effected in three stages of handling: (1) at the surface backfill plant; (2) during transportation; and (3) placement of the fill.The emphasis in this paper is placed on individual stope backfill design and quality control measures at Kidd Creek Mines to place fill in large-scale open stopes which eventually could be exposed on all four walls during pillar recoveries."

"A planned production increase of 1.25 million tonnes per year at Domtar's salt mine in Goderich, Ontario required an increase in the underground mine ventilation system from 320,000 to 700,000 scfm, The design of the expanded facility included the addition of a 22-foot-diameter shaft to augment the existing production and service shafts.A preliminary review of the ventilation requirement s indicated that in order to pr ovide good economic design for the expanded system, a comprehensive ventilation survey of the existing system was required. The survey was completed in the latter part of 1980, and subsequent engineering design and equipment selection proceeded throughout 1981.This paper presents the methods used to carry out the survey. Particular attention is given to the numerous challenges presented in determining air flows in the large 45-ftwide by 43-ft-high airways. Emphasis is placed on practical field survey techniques.A mathematical model of the ventilation system using a computer program is described, and the application of this program to provide design data and assist in equipment selection is discussed. Economic sizing of airways and fan selection are analyzed considering horsepower and operating costs.IntroductionThe Goderich Mine of Sifto Salt Division, Domtar Inc., is located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron in the town of Goderich, Ontario, and has been operating since November 1959. The salt is extracted by a modified room-and-pillar method, and the workings advance at a rate of 1.5 miles per year by undercutting, drilling and blasting. The surface mine area consists of a 12-acre site in the Goderich harbour, at the mouth of the Maitland River, and the underground property consists of approximately 2,700 acres lying mainly under Lake Huron."

"A major Canadian chromite deposit at Bird River, Manitoba is one of the largest known chromite reserves in North America but it exhibits low chromium contents and low chromium to iron ratios. Commercial beneficiation techniques permit these ores to be upgraded to concentrations which, however, remain inferior to most other ores and concentrates used worldwide f or production of high-carbon ferrochromium. Analyses for reduction of low-grade concentrates by submerged-arc electrofurnace techniques predict chromium contents between 45.9% and 51% for a high-carbon ferrochromium alloy. Relatively high over-all chromium recoveries between 79.5% and 91. 1% can be achieved. Alloy compositions for Cr, Fe, C and Si are determined for various burdens with low-grade concentrates. Consumption data per ton contained chromium are obtained for electric power, coke, concentrate, quartzite and limestone. The data are compared with those of high-carbon ferrochromium producers in South Africa. Economic aspects are discussed and compared with a South African reference study.IntroductionThe present ferrochromium demand in the western world is estimated at approximately 1.7 Mt with a consumption of approximately 0.36 Mt in the U.S.III and 0.03 Mt in Canada'-', A low estimate of the installed production capacity for ferrochromium in the non -communist world is 2.4 Mt. This production capacity of ferrochromium by far exceeds the demand, which is also evident from the fact that no shortage in supply of ferrochromium to the world markets was encountered in the past. Supply-demand comparisons therefore suggest that in the foreseeable future no new chromite or chromium producers should enter the world markets unless superior chromites or superior technologies are successful in competing with existing producers. Neither one of these conditions exist presently in Ca nada or the U.S., although essentially no ferrochromium is produced and no chromite is mined in these countries at the present time."

"In January 1981, Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) signed a 2a-year coking coal sales agreement with the Japanese Steel Industry which was followed by the commencement of mining operations in October 1982 and preparation plant operation in November 1983. During the mine 's startup, the town of Tumbler Ridge, the Anzac rail spur line, coal port facilities at Ridley Island plus numerous related elements of infrastructure were completed to support QCL and the neighbouring Bullmose operation in northeastern British Columbia. QCL's annual product coking coal levels have accelerated from 2.9 to 5.2 Mt between 1984 and 1986 with related increases in total mined volume from 14.8 to 41.0 M BCM between 1983 and 1986. This paper presents an overview of QCL 's current operation and related infrastructure. Development BackgroundDuring the 1970s, the Japanese Steel Industry (JSI) was forecasting a steady and significant growth in its steel production. By 1980 they were expecting crude steel production to increase from about 105 Mt in 1980 to 125 Mt by 1985 and almost 140 Mt by 1990.Discussions between Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) and the JSI for the development of the QCL project began in the 1970s and continued over a period of several years. During that time detailed and regular meetings took place, at which technical and commercial presentations were made to the JSI. The geology of the project area and the alternative mining methods and sequences were studied in detail. The new rail line which would connect the mine to tidewater was a critical factor and received particular attention. Alternate routes for the rail line from Tumbler Ridge to Prince George were the subject of much detailed study and discussions. The Anzac route was chosen in the best long-term interest of the northeast area development, after careful consideration and advice from the Japanese side.The new bulk coal terminal on Ridley Island at Prince Rupert was also a key factor and completed the development of an independent and new major coal field to supply the JSI. The QCL project and the development of the northeast area of British Columbia was a major strategical initiative of the JSI. It provided Japan with an important new coal field which was both self-sufficient and distinct from the traditional Japanese coal field resources in southern Canada, Australia, and the United States."

"By 1994, Inco Limited will lower sulphur dioxide emissions from the Copper Cliffsmelter by 60% to 265 000 tonnes/year, primarily through implementing two key process changes. First, new milling technology will permit economic rejection of additonal pyrrhotite prior to smelting. Second, a bulk coppernickel concentrate will be oxygen flash-smelted, thereby eliminating the existing multi-hearth roasters and reverberatory furnaces . All copper will be recovered in the matte separation plant as a nickeliferous chalcocite, and will be oxygen flash-smelted for blister production. This paper outlines the development of the project and describes the process, including the flash furnaces, new sulphuric acid plant and additional oxygen plant.IntroductionInco 's SO2 Abatement Program will lower sulphur dioxide emissions at Sudbury from the current levels of 685 000 tonnes per year to 265 000 tonnes per year by 1994 as required by Ontario' s countdown on acid rain regulations.It is the high tonnage of sulphur mined that creates the magnitude of the SO2 emission problem at Sudbury. At a production rate of 240 million pounds of nickel per year, Inco mines 12 million tonnes of ore. At 10% sulphur it mines 1.2 million tonnes per year of sulphur. If Inco did not fix any of this sulphur it would be emitting 2.4 million tonnes per year of sulphur dioxide-about as much as all other Canadian emissions. Today, however, Inco is already fixing 70% of the SO2 in ore, in several ways : mostly as sulphur in pyrrhotite rejected to tailings in the milling operations; as acid from the roasting of pyrrhotite and some nickel concentrate at the Iron Ore Recovery Plant (lORP) and some as liquid S02 from the copper flash smelting furnace. By fixing 70% of the sulphur the current allowable SO2 emission levels of 685 000 tonnes per year is met. Total sulphuric acid production is currently 450 000 tonnes per year and in fact, the 10RP operation is being continued only to maintain established acid markets.Historically emissions have been reduced from the 2 000 000 tonne per year level to the current level of 685 000 tonnes per year by rejecting pyrrhotite from the smelter feed, and 70% of the SO2 containment problem at Sudbury has already been addressed.While Inco's profits are large at current nickel prices, most people have forgotten that back in 1982 Inco was losing a million dollars a day. Inco did make a dramatic response to this economic stimulus. The Ontario Division increased productivity by 65% and lowered costs to become the lowest cost nickel producer."

"An interactive mine planning package has been developed to aid with the tasks involved in generating dragline mine plans. This package employs recent advances in PC-based,3D computer graphics and 3D geologic modelling. A Gridded Seam Model (GSM), capable of modelling rugged topography and multiple coal seams, including folding and faulting, is used to generate the geologic database This model is then integrated with an interactive graphics mine planning system in order to develop one model and one database for the generation of the mine design, the depletion of the coal reserves and the removal of waste material.As well as offering large potential saving in the time required to carry out the planning tasks, the system offers immediate visual feedback to the planning engineer. This can greatly aid in the conceptual understanding of complex geology and mine plans and can allow for the evaluation of a number of mining options within a reasonable time frame.IntroductionThere are a large number of variables that must be taken into account during the development of a dragline mine plan. This is especially true when developing a mine in mountainous terrain, where there is a lack of continuity of the geology and topography over the mine site. Until recently, the complexity of dragline mine plans has prohibited the development of a universal mine planning package that is applicable to all geologic and topographic situations. The majority of the commercial programs that are presently available to facilitate dragline mine planning have been developed for specific mine properties or are limited in the coal geology and mining methods that they can simulate (Brown and Clifford, 1983; White 1983; White and Jones, 1984; Sadri and Lee, 1982; Dagdelen, 1979)."

"Review of prototype testing of two types of three-phase, argon stabilized reactor/furnace indicates specialized advantages for both, as compared with existing metallurgical furnace technology. They are: the direct-arc, plasma-torch furnace (Knipp); and the indirect, plasma extended-arc reactor (PEAR), developed at the University of Toronto.IntroductionA unique type of three-phase AC, plasma extended-arc reactor, (PEAR), shown in Figure la with gravity feed, has been undergoing development at the University of Toronto, during the past fifteen years: argon gas, introduced axially through drilled-holes in ordinary graphite electrodes, increases the length of indirect arcing and improves electrical stability while decreasing electrode consumption as compared with the performance of AC electric arc furnaces (EAF 's). Meanwhile and independently, a three-phase, transferred arc plasma furnace (Fig. 1b) has been developed by the Krupp Research Institute in Germany, using argon-stabilized, water- cooled plasma-torches with thoriated tungsten electrodes.Accordingly, the two types of furnace are similar as to both three phase and stabilized operation, but otherwise they differ in several respects, ranging from indirect versus direct-arcing to principal intended application and current state of practical development. Between them they raise questions: (I) of their present or fore seeable economics in comparison with existing processes they are intended to replace , (see Heinke and Neuschutz, 1986, for a review of the merit s of AC and DC plasma-torch furnaces); and (2) of the state of development and accessibility of their plasma theory-in-common."

"Edward Haycock, Engineer and Public Contractor Edward Haycock was born in Shrewsbury, England, June 14, 1813. His father was John Haycock, a timber merchant and soap manufacturer, residing at Swan Hill Court, Shrewsbury, and his mother Esther was the daughter of William Hilton of Hempstead, Hertfordshire. Edward's paternal grandfather, John Hiram Haycock, was the first of a line of architects that ""changed the face of Shrewsbury"" and ""provided some of the best examples of typical Victorian architecture in Shropshire""(1). Nothing is known of Edward's early life or education, although it appears that he made no attempt to follow this artistic trend. In 1833, Edward immigrated to Canada. The following year, he married Mary Butler, daughter of Johnson Butler, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812. Mrs. Haycock, as co-heiress of Johnson Butler's estate, was assigned 600 choice acres of farmland in Brooke Township near present-day Sarnia. This alone would have guaranteed a tidy income, but the Haycocks soon disposed of this land, the last lots being sold in May 1840. Instead, Haycock turned his hand to engineering and, for a number of years, was employed by the Great Western Railway first in Woodstock and later in Hamilton. He then moved to Port Hope, tried farming, worked in the engineering office of the Port Hope, Lindsay and Beaverton Railway Company, and later constructed a portion of this railway(2). During his stay in Port Hope, Haycock met his future partners Ralph Jones, a contractor, and Thomas Curtis Clarke, chief engineer with the P.H.L. and B. Railway Company. The alliance was styled Jones, Haycock and Company and their most successful venture was the construction of the Government Buildings in Ottawa. This work was the crowning achievement of Haycock's career and, no doubt, his proudest moment was at 11:30 a.m., April 2, 1860, when his daughter Mary Emily, then a little girl of 4, with a special silver trowel ceremoniously laid the first stone. Of special interest in this project were the quarrying operations, which introduced Haycock to the art and difficulties of mining as well as to the potential returns of mines. Sandstone, for facing, was drawn from four quarries, 10 to 12 miles from the Departmental Buildings. Haycock seems to have been in charge of these operations, which in the early stages involved an average labour force of 86 men and 43 teams. However, by 1861, quarrying had declined in importance and the contractors were able to concentrate whole-heartedly on the construction site."

It is comprised of Exploration, Metallurgical Processing and Mining Divisions.The Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) has the mandate to contribute to the profitability, competitiveness, safety and growth of the Canadian mining industry by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy in an environmentally conscious manner through the development of innovative technology by managing cooperative industry focused research programs.Current membership includes about ten Canadian mining companies. Past research has largely focused on base metal mineral processing. Weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore is a specific rare earth resource in China that is rich in middle and heavy rare earths. From surface to bottom, the weathered crust elution-deposit rare earth ores can be divided into humic layer, completely weathered layer, partly weathered layer, and bedrock. The exchangeable rare earth ions mainly exist in the completely weathered layer and partly weathered layer, and the exchangeable aluminum ions mainly exist in the humic layer. A novel solution injection method for use in the in-situ leaching technology of weathered crust elution-deposit rare earth ores was put forward based on the different distributions of RE3+ and Al3+ in the four layers. Avoiding the humic layer, only the completely weathered layer and partly weathered layer were leached by controlling the height of the leaching solution liquid level. In this way aluminum, the primary impurity in the RE leaching solution, can be decreased and the purity of the RE product can be improved. Meanwhile, the choices of available leaching reagents were broadened and the possibility of landslide disasters could be reduced.

"Scientists throughout the world have observed radioactive disequilibrium in the uranium decay series. Radiometric and fluorometric determinations of U in plants from the Goldfields district and in sediments and rocks from the Beaverlodge district exhibit marked radioactive disequilibrium. The eU/U ratio in plants rooted in mineralized ground shifts from greater than unity to less than unity for those rooted in background soils. A similar shift is observed in the transition from rocks to stream sediments and to lake sediments in the Beaverlodge district.Results of a Rn-Ra-U survey of lake bottoms in the Key Lake district show that anomalous hydromorphic U from U mineralization is parallelled by anomalous Rn, even though there is much less Ra in the lake-bottom sediments than one would expect from the amount of U present. IntroductionDisequilibrium in the U decay series has been studied for many years and is observed in almost all surficial environments. Rosholt (1959) measured U, 234Pa, 23O'fh, 226Ra, 222Rn, and 210Pb in a large number of U ores and outlined six types of situations to explain disequilibrium. Davy (1974) outlines the geological significance of radioactive disequilibrium situations with respect to exploration. Levinson and Coetzee (1978) discuss possible mechanisms by which separations of parent and daughter elements are affected and suggest analytical pitfalls that may be encountered in the use of radiometric techniques when disequilibrium has occurred. Generally, it is the oxyphile and easily complexed parent 238U (with its associated isotopes 235 U and 234U) that is leached from rocks and soils at a faster rate than are the daughters, 230Th, 226Ra, 2loPb, and 206Pb. This mobilized U is adsorbed on sediments in streams and lakes, or enters groundwaters, where it is eventually precipitated under reducing conditions, occasionally in oregrade concentrations. "Canada has a special place in non-ferrous pyrometallurgy because it is the only country in the western world that is a significant producer of all the major non-ferrous metals; aluminum, copper, lead, magnesium, nickel and zinc. This large non-ferrous pyrometallurgy industry has developed because of Canada's abundant mineral wealth and energy resources. Table I summarizes the number of primary non-ferrous production facilities in Canada and their share of western world production.Production of non-ferrous metals is a mature, capital intensive business and its basic processes have been in use for many years. Nevertheless, these processes have continued to evolve in response to changing needs and external pressures; such as the energy crisis of the early seventies; historically low metal prices in the early eighties and the continuing pressure to reduce plant emissions and improve in-plant working conditions. Canada's major metallurgical companies: Alcan, Cominco, Falconbridge, Inco and Noranda have played a leading role in pioneering new process technology and continue to meet the difficult challenge of keeping their operations competitive in the global metals market. This paper will try to give an overview of the major developments in non-ferrous pyrometallurgy, largely from the Noranda and Canadian perspectives, highlighting the current status of process technology and possible future directions.AluminumCanada has the world's second largest aluminum smelting industry and its capacity has expanded rapidly in recent years with the completion of several large projects in Quebec. The location and capacity of the Canadian aluminum smelters are given in Table 2. All these plants use the Hall-Heroult process, that was invented over a century ago but over the last twenty years considerable improvements have been made to increase productivity, reduce power requirements and emissions.The developments in aluminum cell technology can be illustrated by the experience at Noranda Aluminum. In 1971, Noranda Aluminum started its first pot line using Kaiser's P69 prebake cell, which was considered, at that time, the best available technology. The P69 cell was designed primarily for high productivity, operating at 150 000 amps and high current density to produce just over tonne Al per cell-day. The P69 cell is a simple design, typically operating at about 88070 current efficiency and 15 800 kWh/tonne Al. When Noranda Aluminum decided to expand in 1980, the Alcoa 697 cell was selected as it then represented the most proven, stateof- the-art technology. This cell is similar to that installed at Alcan's new Grande Baie and Laterriere smelters and is designed to operate at 180000 amps and 93070 current efficiency, producing about 25070 more aluminum per pot-day than the P69 cell using about 15070 less power. The 697 cell has a much more sophisticated cell design, with very good balancing of the magnetic field giving a flat metal pad and allowing efficient operation at the higher amperage. Alumina is fed via point feeders that provide an almost continuous feed allowing close control of the alumina level in the bath and the use of low-ratio bath composition, giving much higher current efficiencies."

"Haldor Topsoe’s Wet gas Sulfuric Acid (WSA) technology has been proven in a number of industries converting sulfurous gasses to concentrated sulfuric acid. In the metallurgical sector plants have been delivered handling SO2 gasses from copper, zinc, molybdenum, and lead ore. WSA has high energy efficiency and allows autothermal operation from feed gas strengths as low as 3.0% (volume). Recent variants of the WSA process have been developed that allow very high SO2 conversion efficiencies of over 99.9%. This paper describes the technology, its advantages and industrial achievements.The WSA technology is well suited for production of concentrated sulfuric acid of commercial quality from the sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas that inevitably emerges from the metallurgical processes. Some of the features that make the WSA technology attractive for this application are:- High SO2 conversion rates (up to 99.99%)- High energy efficiency leading to a low autothermal point (~ 3% SO2)- No need for gas cooling and drying to produce concentrated sulfuric acid- No production of waste- Very low cooling water consumptionThis paper describes the WSA process principles and highlights features that make this process attractive for handling SO2 gases."

"Zinc metal is primarily produced by electrowinning from sulfate solution. Zinc electrowinning is very sensitive to impurities such as Co and Ni. These impurities have to be removed to produce high-quality zinc and maintain a high zinc current efficiency. Zinc dusts are used to remove these impurities by cementation. However cobalt cementation is extremely slow and it is typically activated by the addition of Cu and Sb. Even with the use of Cu-Sb activation, cobalt is still difficult to remove. The zinc dust used for cobalt cementation is negligible compared to that consumed for hydrogen evolution. In some plants up to 6-7% of electrolytic zinc is used for cementation. This is a great waste of energy. Cu-Sb activation is not well understood. The objective of this study was to further understand the Cu-Sb activation and then find a way to reduce hydrogen evolution and promote cobalt cementation. The investigation reveals how hydrogen evolution (or zinc dissolution) and cobalt cementation and re-dissolution change with temperature, zinc dust dosage, the concentrations of copper and antimony and time. In the Cu-Sb activation, copper is deposited on a zinc particle to produce a porous shell. The zinc particle as an anode dissolves while the shell as a cathode provides a place where cobalt cementation and hydrogen evolution occur and they are catalyzed by antimony. A certain level of antimony (around 0.1 mg/L) is a key to maintain the catalytic effect of the shell. At a higher antimony concentration, cobalt cementation is accelerated slightly while hydrogen evolution is increased greatly. When a zinc particle dissolves to a certain degree, cobalt loses its cathodic protection and starts to re-dissolve. The change in cobalt concentration is determined by the rates of cobalt cementation and re-dissolution. The operation conditions can be optimized to maximize the cobalt removal and minimize the zinc dust dosage.INTRODUCTIONMost of the world’s zinc metal is produced by electrowinning from sulfate media. Many impurities such as iron, copper, cobalt and nickel are co-extracted into solution with zinc. Iron, mercury, indium, lead and tin are removed by co-precipitation as hydroxides. Copper, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, arsenic and germanium are partially co-precipitated with iron while cadmium, magnesium and chloride remain in solution. Cobalt, copper, cadmium, nickel and etc. are subsequently removed by cementation with zinc dust to achieve an acceptable current efficiency and high purity metal product for the economical production of zinc. The concept of a computer integrated Truck MIS includes truck dispatch, truck maintenance management and truck weighing.A truck management system is only as good as the information / data bases input to it. The concept of an integrated system works best with automated data gathering. Automated data gathering provides timely and normally, the most accurate historical information/data bases. Data bases are, however, historical, which is a problem to be overcome in a computerized truck management information system, especially in regards to a truck dispatch system as loading sites / loading conditions and some dump site conditions continually change. As these changes occur, data base s must change as well, and thus the need for the continual update of data bases that the computer uses for a Truck MIS.For a truck dispatch system to achieve reliability / viability, dispatch decisions need to revolve around real time data gathered in an automated way. Integration of all truck management function s through automated data gathering lead s to the best over-all system.An integrated system is a combination of many different factors and is only as good as each factor / building block put in the system. "Evaporites abound in the Western Canada sedimentary basin, recurring throughout the stratigraphic column and widely scattered over the basin region. Alberta, situated centrally over the basin, includes many of the evaporites within its borders, but only a few have the right geological conditions to form potential economic deposits of salt or gypsum. These include the Middle Devonian Elk Point Group and related evaporites, Upper Devonian Wabamun Group-Palliser Formation evaporites, and evaporites of the 'Triassic Charlie Lake and Whitehorse formations.Salt deposits underlie almost half of Alberta. The major deposits belong to the Elk Point Group, which includes thick salt units in the Lotsberg, Cold Lake and Prairie Evaporite formations. Another, younger salt deposit in the Wabamun Group has only local distribution. Elk Point salts have a maximum aggregate thickness of 430 m in east-central Alberta. The deposits deepen southwestward across the province, from minimum depths of210 m at Fort McMurray to 1820 m at Edmonton.The thickest, most extensive salt deposits are the upper Lotsberg and Prairie Evaporite salts. Both have excellent development potential. The upper Lotsberg is up to 150 m thick, consists of clear, very coarse crystalline halite with only minor impurities, and has a notable lack of non-salt strata in its succession. Analytical data for the Lotsberg Salt show extraordinary chemical purity. Prairie Evaporite Salt differs lithologically from the Lotsberg in having a significant non-salt component. The deposit is up to 200 m thick and consists of medium crystalline halite, brownish coloured and cloudy as a result of finely dispersed impurities. The main impurities-shale, anhydrite and dolomite-are most prevalent as interbeds in the salt succession, ranging from very thin laminae to beds several metres thick. Although of lesser purity, the Prairie Evaporite Salt is shallower, thicker and more extensive than the Lotsberg and the salt quality is quite acceptable for most industrial uses."

"Potentially economic stratiform barite-sulphide deposits have recently been discovered in Devonian basinal facies rocks of the Kechika Trough of northeast British Columbia. This new mineral district is over 180 kilometres long and includes nine major occurrences, namely Driftpile Creek, Bear, Mount Alcock, Cirque, Fluke, Pie, Elf, Kwadacha and Sika. The Cirque is the largest known deposit, with reserves of atleast 30 million tonnes averaging 10per cent combined lead-zinc and 47 grams per tonne silver. The footwall rocks for the Cirque and other strati/rom barite-sulphide deposits in the area are rhythmically bedded baritic and pyritic carbonaceous black shales, siliceous argillites and cherts of probable Mid to Late Devonian age. These siliceous rocks overlie a succession of proximal to distal turbidites which are the basinal equivalent of Early to Mid Devonian carbonate reefs to the east. The siliceous facies is overlain by deeper-water black shales of probable Late Devonian to Mississippian age.Preliminary stratigraphic and sedimentological investigations suggest that the strati/arm massive pyrite and bedded barite deposits formed in third-order euxinic basins within a northwest-trending structurally controlled trough which, in the southern part of the district, was bounded by carbonate reefs. The exhalative event, which appears to have been accompanied by synsedimentary faulting, took place during the early stages of a major eastward-directed marine transgression that was probably related to rapid crustal subsidence. Dewatering of metal-enriched shales and subsequent brine discharge along fault zones within the trough, with the exhaled brines accumulating in seafloor depressions, is the mechanism envisaged for formation of the deposits. Convective circulation systems may have been established about the more deep-seated faults, in response to elevated heat flow levels."

"The Strathcona Mine is located in Levack Township on the North Range ofthe Sudbury Basin. The main orebody consists of pyrrhotite-pentlandite-chalcopyrite mineralization associated with an embayment of the footwall of the Sudbury Irruptive. A zone of massive chalcopyrite-cubanite-pentlandite mineralization occurs in a complex vein system in a series of mixed gneisses and breccias in the footwall. Vein widths vary from a few millimetres to 6 metres. In December 1979, this zone was estimated to contain 976,000 metric tonnes, with a grade of 9.31% Cu and 0.46% Ni. The vein system has a general strike of N 68°W at an angle of 60 degrees to the average strike of the footwall contact of the Irruptive. The dip of the vein system is 45 degrees sw. The strike and dip of individual veins in the system coincide with the directions that would result if a compressive stress had acted in a direction normal to the footwall of the Sudbury Irruptive, producing a conjugate set of fractures. The strike of the Irruptive at the Strathcona Mine is parallel to the long axis of the basin.IntroductionThe Strathcona Mine, owned and operated by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, is located in Levack Township on the northwest rim of the Sudbury basin (Fig. I) . It is one of a group of nickel-copper sulphide ore deposits present along an 8.2-km section of the North Range of the Sudbury Irruptive. In the mines of the North Range, subunits of the Irruptive, going from hanging wall to footwall , include felsic norite, dark norite and dark norite breccia. The footwall complex at Strathcona includes the late granite breccia, which hosts a large proportion of the nickel-copper ores, and a compositionally variable group of brecciated and migmatized rocks, herein referred to as the feldspathic gneiss complex. It is within this latter group of rocks that the vein system of the Copper Zone occurs."
