Utilization of belt air in underground coal mines has been discussed extensively during the last decade. The Final Report of the Technical Study Panel on the Utilization of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining formed by the Miner Act of 2006 recommends research on leakage, use of booster fans, and escapeway safety. This paper discusses the role of ventilation modeling in evaluating primary escapeway pressurization in a three-entry development system to improve emergency escape in a coal mine using belt air. The intake entry of the NIOSH Bruceton Experimental Mine was pressurized using a 1.1 m (42 in) diameter, 37 kW (50 hp) fan. The work details air movement in the simulated three-entry system and the resulting leakage patterns. Three mine ventilation software packages were compared to analyze their performance in predicting the airflows and leakage conditions with different fan settings. NIOSH researchers found that the measurement results correlated well with the results of modeling.

Among the many engineering problems directly related to conservation in the petroleum industry, that of crude-oil emulsions continues to be important. Emulsions of water and oil always have constituted one of the most serious forms of waste in the oil fields, and the necessity of dehydrating emulsified crude petroleum to obtain marketable or pipe-line oil confronts operators in many fields with a major operating problem. In 1926 the Bureau of Mines published a comprehensive treatise s on oil-field emulsions dealing with field conditions, practical methods of dehydration, and physicochemical characteristics of the formation and resolution of emulsions. Although this bulletin is still available and may be obtained from the Superintendent of Documents, Washington, D. C., and although its contents are a valuable reference on the subject of emulsions, knowledge regarding the physical properties of emulsions and the phenomena of dehydration has increased greatly within the last decade. With the information gained through continued scientific research, substantial improvements have been made in the art of resolving petroleum emulsions. Moreover, in recent years there has been a growing realization of the importance of emulsion-preventive measures that has led to more critical examination of the causes of emulsions and methods of eliminating or at least reducing the degree of emulsification. Conditions causing agitation and commingling of oil and water and the formation of "cut oil" often are within the control of the producer, thereby making it possible to utilize preventive or remedial measures by which emulsification may be minimized or avoided. In fact, many companies have materially reduced their treating costs as a result of careful studies in emulsion prevention and proper handling of "wet" production. Of course, in many instances preventive measures or the correction of conditions causing emulsification cannot be achieved practically or economically, and the emulsions that form must be treated regardless of the care exercised or the money spent in attempting to prevent their formation.

"INTRODUCTION Iron ore containing titanium was first used in blast furnaces over a century ago. It is well known that TiO2 is a slag-forming material that will increase the amount of slag produced by the usual gangue materials, silica and alumina. Increase in the volume of slag due to the presence of TiO2 and a lack of information concerning its effect on the properties of the slag have prevented the general use of titaniferous ore. Also rather com¬mon belief among furnace operators that the bottom of the furnace builds up when ores containing TiO2 are smelted has militated against the use of titaniferous ore. This building up of the hearth has been attributed to the formation of copper-colored crystals of titanium cyanonitride, which have been observed in the salamanders of blast furnaces. Until recently the availability of nontitaniferous iron ore has left little incentive to use ore containing titanium.The presence of vanadium in certain deposits of titaniferous magnetite in New York State has created new interest in problems connected with the use of titanium-bearing ore. It appears that most of the vanadium in this ore can be recovered in pig iron, which can be blown in a converter to produce a slag containing vanadium in amounts suitable for the production of ferrovanadium.The Titanium Division of the National Lead Co. recently erected a largo mill to treat ore from Sanford Hill, in Essex County, New York, about 50 miles west of Port Henry. The ore deposit was acquired from the MacIntyre Iron Co. and is often referred to as Sanford ore. It is one of the largest deposits of Iron-bearing material to be found east of the Lake Superior region and is being mined by open-pit methods."

Although a number of minerals are imported, especially some designated as "strategic and critical," most U.S. mineral supplies are derived from the domestic mines and processing facilities that you will be seeing, reading about, and visiting as you use this visitor guide. We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is in-tended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation's romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

After the discovery of the rare-earth mineral deposit in the Clark Mountain area near Mountain Pass, San Bernardino County, Calif., two samples wore obtained through the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines for investigation of possible method of concentration. Three other samples were received later from different locations in the same area. The rare-earth mineral in this ore had been identified by E. T. Schonk as bastnaesite, a fluocarbonate of the rare-earth metals containing cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium, thorium, uranium, etc. Associated with the bastnaesite were barite, silica, and some calcite. The bastnaesite contained a small amount of iron as a coloration and some manganese. Twenty to fifty percent of the weight of the samples studied was bastnaesite, or ten to twenty-five percent total rare-earth oxides; about half was cerium oxide. Apparently, none of this mineral occurred in pure form. Even the highest-grade particles 'wore contaminated by fine, interlocked grains of barite, calcite, and silica; barite contamination predominated, and the barite was interlocked with varying amounts of bastnaesite. While the specific gravities of pure bastnaesite and barite (approximately 5.0 and 4.50 respectively) differ enough to allow separation by gravity, the interlocking of the minerals nullified this difference. Consequently, only a partial separation could be made by gravity concentration. The extremely fine grained texture of most of the ore prevented grinding to a size that would make concentration by flotation practicable; a partial separation of barite by this means was effected.

"INTRODUCTION Falls of ground cause the greatest number of accidents at underground metal mines. Statistics compiled by the Federal Bureau of Mines show that during a 13 - year period ended in 1943, falls of ground caused 35 percent of the fatalities and 16.8 percent of the nonfatal injuries at underground metal mines in the United States. 4/ Expressed on a basis of a million man-hours worked, the frequency rate was 0.355 for fatalities and 11.76 for nonfatal injuries. Although some progress has boon made in preventing rock-fall accidents over a 30- or 40-year period, the problem is still a major one requiring the diligent efforts of management and employees.In the Lake Superior district: where organized safety programs have been in effect for more than 30 years, the record is more favorable. Statistics compiled by the Lake Superior Mining Section of the National Safety Council reveal that over a 6-year period ended in 1945 the frequency rate of fatalities per million man-hours was 0.277, and the rate for nonfatal injuries was 2.38 from falls of ground.Although the above-given statistics do not cover equal or concurrent periods, the improvement in accident experience in the Lake Superior district over the national average, is obvious. This improvement is due to more effective methods of ground support or more rigid enforcement of the use of known methods.It is hoped that the following information about ground-support practices in the Lake Superior district will assist operators of other mines in their efforts to reduce accidents from falls of ground."

Many articles have been written on the general principles and details of gold dredging, a but it is not possible within the limits of this paper to recapitulate them, and it is thus necessary to assume some knowledge of this literature by the readers of this paper. Although the purpose of this paper is to describe gold dredging in Montana, a brief mention of some early appliances used in New Zealand, Australia, and California may serve as a world-connecting link in our consideration of the development of gold dredging. DREDGES EARLY USED IN NEW ZEALAND, AUSTRALIA, AND CALIFORNIA. Spoon dredges operated by hand were tried in New Zealand on rich spots in the Clutha River with some success as early as 1865. A dredge of this kind is shown in Plate I, A. In 1870 a modification of the spoon, operated by steam and being thus a primitive steamshovel dredge, was worked in New Zealand. Steam-shovel dredging was attempted in California as early as 1888 and 1893, and with some success in later years. The elevator gold dredge with endless bucket chain was put into operation in New Zealand in 1882. Plate I, B, illustrates a type of this dredge operated by current wheels. Plate II, A, shows a steam-operated dredge of this class, also started in 1882. In 1897 R. H. Postlethwaite, connected with the Risdon Iron Works, San Francisco, introduced the dredging practice of New Zealand into California. The first dredge built sank in the turbulent current of the Yuba. The second at Oroville, owned and operated by W. P. Hammon, proved effective and was the start in California of successful gold dredging. Since then the growth of the golddredging industry in California has been so rapid that the gold output from dredges in that State exceeds that of all other States in the Union, and, in fact, of any other country of the world, the value of the gold produced in California by dredging from 1897 to the end of 1914 having been about $71,000,000.

"Introduction.Oil-field operations have often been carried on under great stress and haste, in which the prime purpose has been to put the wells down rapidly as possible, without regard to a few of the various factors affecting cost. In such fields as Burkurnett, Texas, where the well locations are town lots and other small tracts, the operator was concerned primarily with in drilling. In such cases a few thousand dollars more or less in the cost of a well not considered. We are reaching a time, however, when our reserves a,more definitely outlined and properties are being along more economic lines. Operators are becoming more concerned with the actual cost of this work, and are gradually learning that fuel consumption can be reduced in drilling and producing without delaying the speed of drilling, and in the case of production, it will greatly reduce the unit cost per barrel of production.Types of Field Boilers.In the oil fields there are in general two types of boilers; those which are used for drilling wells and are of a more or less portable character, and those established later in a more permanent form and serve for the purpose,of generating steam for producing the oil. As a rule, the latter type of boilers are larger than those of the drilling type. Usually, little care is given to the installation of drilling boilers; particularly in attempting to set them up in such a way as to avoid waste in of fuel. Because of the temporary nature of these installations there may be some justification for not giving them more,attention in this resend, but it is believed that a few precautions could be taken that would amply repay the cost and trouble taken. In connection with the boiler plants that are afterwards established, when a few producing wells have been,brought in with a life of two to ten years and probably longer, much care to the boiler-plant construction and to the installation of recording instruments which will assist in operating the plant at minimum cost."

Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. announced that it planned to spend $66 million to increase the efficiency of its Baton Rouge, Louisiana, alumina plant. The improvements are designed to reduce energy consumption but will not change the annual capacity of the plant, now rated at about one million short tons. The project was expected to be initiated immediately and be completed by 1982. ALUMINUM Producers in this country posted unalloyed 99.5 percent aluminum ingot at 53-57.5 cents per pound, yet actual selling prices were closer to 53 cents. Domestic merchants quoted unalloyed ingot on a spot basis at 54-56.3 cents. London Metal Exchange 3-month forward contracts fell during November's trading from 55,2 cents to 52.8 cents per pound.

Purpose: This training material focuses on the content of emergency warning messages. Research has shown that when an emergency occurs, people often do not get the information they need for the purpose of taking appropriate action. This safety talk presents a procedure, using mental cues that can be used by senders and receivers of emergency warnings. Intended Use: This material has been developed for use in short safety-training sessions such as start-of-shift safety or Atoolbox@ talks. The information can be presented in approximately fifteen minutes and is appropriate for workers at all experience levels. While the examples and illustrations are taken from the underground coal mining industry, the training can be tailored to any work setting by substituting appropriate examples. Materials Needed: The instructor will need to prepare the figures provided in a form that can be seen by the entire class. Suggested methods include the use of: (1) overhead transparencies, (2) laminated pages that can be held up for small groups, and/or (3) handouts with copies of the figures for each trainee. As a supplement, stickers featuring the communication triangle can be placed on hard hats, telephones or other communication devices to remind workers about the key to effective emergency communication. The Talk: The accompanying script is a guide for presenting this safety talk. Training is enhanced if these materials are covered but not simply read by the trainer. Examples given in this guide are from real experiences. To make training more interesting and effective, the instructor can substitute examples from his/her workplace. Methane and other hydrocarbon gases, byproducts of coalification, are emitted from coal at widely varying rates and often present ventilation problems during mining. The air in some coal mines apparently contains no methane. To determine if coals from mines which bid no history of detectable gas emission contained adsorbed methane, samples of coal at the shaft bottom and at an active face were obtained and placed in sealed metal cylinders. The atmosphere around the coal was sampled and analysed by gas chromatography. Methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, and butane were found to have been desorbed from these coals. Hydrogen and helium were also detected. An estimate of the amount of residual gas per ton A coal indicated that coal samples from the active face generally contained more adsorbed gas than coal samples obtained from the shaft bottom, although in both instances the total amount of gas was relatively small.

"The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Projects were set up on only the most promising properties.A preliminary examination of the Mount Hope mine was made in January 1943 by the Bureau's engineers, who recommended exploration by diamond drilling.The mine is in the unsurveyed portion of T. 22 N., R. 1 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, south-central Eureka County, Nevada, 25 miles by road north of the village of Eureka. A partly graded and Graveled secondary road connects the mine and Eureka on U. S. Highway 50.Extensive sampling was done by the Bureau in February. 1943. Core drilling from the surface was started on March 15, 1944, and completed on April 2, 1545. The 16 holes drilled totaled 7,215 feet. The mining company also did extensive underground core drilling from April 21, 1944, to January 4, 1945. This report gives the results of core drilling supervised by the Bureau of Mines.The drilling program was designed to explore for extensions of the mineralization exposed in the mine workings. As a result of drilling, additional ore was found, and it is believed that this project has fulfilled the purpose for which it was planned.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization, of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to na¬tional security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation test. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assists director.With respect to this report special acknowledgment is due to Charles W. Merriam of the United States Geological Survey for his interpretation of the Mount Hope mine Geology and his cooperation throughout the project; Col. Leverett Davis, former lessee of the property; K. "PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONOf more than 300 bituminous mines examined by Crichton 5 and his assistants in connection with litigation in Indian Creek Valley, Payette County, Pa., only four were found to have alkaline water. That work and many observations from of the authors have shown the general prevalence or acid drainage from bituminous coal mines. In connection with investigations pertinent to coal-mine drainage that are being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, it was noted with considerable interest therefore, that a mine in the Thick Freeport bed about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh had no acid water in the workings, As it was thought that this condition might be common to all mines,this condition in this bed most of them were visited, samples of the outflow and from different parts of the mine inside were examined, and such general information as was available was gathered.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors acknowledge with thanks the courteous assistance of mine officials in connection with collecting the data for this paper, and of the analytical and coal laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for analyses."

"INTRODUCTION This report embodies the results of a detailed statistical microscopic examination of the ore and the mill products of the Silver King Coalition Mines Co., Park City, Utah.The study was conducted under the joint auspices of the United States Bureau of mines is cooperation with the University of Utah at Salt Lake City, Utah. The work was done in the cooperative Microscopic Service Laboratory, which was equipped by contributions from the following companies: Utah Copper Co., International Smelting & Refining Co., American Smelting & Refining Co., United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co., Tintic Standard Mining Co., Silver King Coalition Mines Co., and Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co. The salaries and the other costs involved in operation of the laboratory were met by contributions from certain supporting companies. In addition to the regular personnel of the laboratory the Bureau of Mines contributed the part-time services of a microscopist-consultant to direct and assist with the technical work.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSThe authors acknowledge the courtesies extended by the Silver King Coalition Mines Co., through its general manager, M. Data are presented for oil produced in 1971 from fields in 26 States that accounted for about 76 percent of total U.S. oil production; the foreign data cover fields in 24 foreign countries that accounted for about 64 percent of the total oil produced from these countries in 1971. Most of the data are presented in tabular form.

Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota, and a 30-mile radius area of influence on the United States side of the International Border, was examined for hardrock (nonferrous metallic minerals and diamonds) mineral potential and environmental sensitivity by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The investigation also included an analysis of current Metallic Minerals Leasing Rules of the State of Minnesota, and the probable effects of changes proposed to the current rules by the State of Minnesota in order to "encourage mineral exploration and development." The study has determined that the proposed changes to the Minnesota State Leasing rules will have minimal, if any, impact on the likely, foreseeable levels of mineral-related activities in the State as a whole, and particularly, in the area of influence to the Park. Voyageurs National Park management was advised on the extent and character of the proposed rules changes, and on those items of concern meriting a specific and timely response by the National Park Service.

"INTRODUCTION A soluble mediator has been described which is released from activated rabbit leukocytes and induces histamine secretion from rabbit platelets (Barbaro and Zvaifler, 1966; Siraganian and Osler, 1971). This factor has been isolated, characterized and named platelet activating factor, PAF (Bcnveniste et. al., 1972). PAF has since been chemically identified as l-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphocholine (Benveniste et. al., 1979; Demopoulous et. al., 1979).PAF is a lipid mediator of broad biological activity. It causes smooth muscle contraction, contraction of lung tissue and decreased FEV 1; while enhancing capillary permeability thus causing edema (Pinkard, 1983). In addition, PAF is a chemoattractant and can lead to inflammation.PAF has been reported to stimulate the release of lysosomal enzymes, leukotriene B,, and lipid metabolites from neutrophils (Smith et. al., 1983; Shaw et. al., 1981; Lin et. al., 1982; O'Flaherty et. al., 1984). The objective of the present investigation was to further characterize PAP-induced stimulation of granulocytes and to develop a bioassay, i.e. chemiluminescence, for screening PAF receptor antagonists and inhibitors of PAP-induced activation of granulocytes. The possible use of the chemiluminescence assay to monitor PAF synthesis by human granulocytes is also described.METHODSBlood was drawn from healthy volunteers into a blood storage bag containing CPD anticoagulant. Granulocytes were partially purified by dextran sedimentation and further purified by centrifugal elutriation as described previously (Jones et. al., 1980). Granulocytes obtained by this procedure were approximately 95 percent pure. The number of granulocytes in this preparation was determined using an electronic cell counter (Coulter Model Z1, Coulter Instrument Co., Hialeah, FL). Isolated granulocytes were used to monitor membrane potential, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide release, oxygen consumption, calcium uptake and, in some cases, chemiluminescence. Studies of PAF receptor antagonists were conducted using neutrophils isolated by density centrifugation. Briefly, blood was layered onto Mono-Poly-Resolving Medium (Flow Laboratories, McLean, VA) and centrifuged at 22 °C and 300 g for 30 min. Neutrophils collected from the second band of this gradient were at least 90 percent pure."

This is the first progress report to be released on the anthracite, mechanical mining research and engineering development program of the Bureau of Mines. This phase of Bureau work, which was initiated as an aid to stimulating wartime production of anthracite, has been continued after the war to assist primarily in improving the general economic position of the anthracite industry. Field work was started in. the 1945 fiscal year with the cooperation of an advisory committee representing management, labor, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. For a beginning, several matters were suggested by members of this advisory committee as being worthy of investigation, and sections of underground mines yore offered for test purposes. Among the suggestions accepted for investigation was the problem of increasing the rate of advance for driving gangways in thin, steeply pitching anthracite beds 4 to 6 feet thick and pitching 60 degrees or more. The problem was undertaken as a field study, and this report relates to accomplishments on this project to June 30, 1947.

THE HELIUM ACT (50 Stat. 885; 50 U. S. C. 161,163-166), as amended, places the responsibility for conserving, producing, and selling helium upon the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Bureau of Mines-the only producer of helium in quantity in the world. It operates 4 plants-I each at Amarillo and Exell, Tex.; Otis, Kans.; and Navajo (Shiprock), N. Mex. The demand for helium has increased steadily since the decline immediately after World War II and is expected to exceed the capacity of the present plants in the near future. The Congress has appropriated $6,000,000 far constructing a new plant. In addition to providing additional capacity to meet increased demands for helium, the new plant will enable the Bureau of Mines to better conserve the helium in, the Government-owned reserves at Amarillo and Navajo.

The other South Pacific islands included in this chapter extend from Papua New Guinea, east of the Indonesian Province of Irian Jaya on the island of New Guinea, to Fiji, straddling the 180° meridian. A number of islands have been omitted from this chapter owing to the fact that their only mineral production remained insignificant to the economy of the respective country or territory. These islands include the French overseas territories of French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna Islands; the independent states of Kiribati, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu; the New Zealand freely associated state of the Cook Islands; and the New Zealand dependency of Niue. The mineral production that did exist in these islands was limited to construction materials such as coral reef limestone, crushed stone, and sand and gravel in minor quantities used solely for domestic consumption. FIJI Fiji, an archipelago in Melanesia consisting of 300 islands ranging from tiny coral atolls, cays, and rugged coral limestone islets to the larger mountainous, volcanic islands of Kadavu, Taveuni, Vanua Levu, and Viti Levu, straddles the 180° meridian about 1,800 kilometers south of the Equator. Fiji has been an independent member of the British Commonwealth of Nations since October 10, 1970.
