The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactorily demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No, 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia.

Laboratory data obtained from a Bureau of Mines rotary air core of a well near Sugar Grove , Warren County , Pa . , were instrumental in initiating hydraulic fracturing in the area to stimulate oil recovery from Glade sand oil reservoirs . This report outlines the general geology , lease development , reservoir- rock characteristics , and oil - production history of Glade and Clarendon sand reservoirs in Warren County . The methods of well completion for single- stage and multiple- stage hydraulic fracturing of old and new wells are discussed , and a range of hydraulic fracture treatment data from 29 Glade sand and 10 Clarendon sand wells is presented . A composite decline curve representing oil - production data from six wells shows probable results of hydraulic fracturing . Average cumulative oil production during the first 100 days after hydraulic fracturing with a sand - carrying liquid is compared with production after conventional shooting with liquid nitroglycerin .

This paper , which describes mining methods and milling and manufacturing operations at the gypsum property of the Blue Diamond Corp. , is one of a series on mining methods and practices being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines . The property comprises about 4,000 acres and is in secs . 30 , 31 , 32 , and 33 , T. 21 S. , R. 59 E. , and secs . 5 , 6, 7 , 8 , and 9 , T. 22 S. , R. 59 E. , M. D. B. and M. , Clark County , Nev . , approximately 23 miles by paved highway southwest of Las Vegas , Nev . ( fig . 1 ) . This circular summarizes the history of company operations , describes physical features , labor and living conditions , and the geology . The method of exploration is outlined , and the section on mining methods contains descriptions of open - pit and underground systems , including loading and transportation methods . The crushing plant and tramway are described , as well as plaster-mill and board -plant practices . The boiler plant and organization are described , and wage scales are contained in the concluding section of the circular .

The use of explosives to fragment rock generates ground vibrations which may have a detrimental effect on contiguous underground coal mine openings. Increased surface blasting by a burgeoning number of surface coal mines and quarries has caused considerable concern among underground mine operators. Ground vibration effects generated from surface mine blasting are also causing public concern. In response to this concern, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Stagg and Engler, 1980) has measured and analyzed ground vibrations and their effects on underground and surface structures. Some of the complaints registered against the mining industry are claims of substantial material damage from vibrations generated by the blasting; others are nuisance complaints of minor damage or annoyance. In general, allegations of damage from surface blasting have been sufficiently numerous to constitute a major problem for mine operators engaged in blasting operations. They have recognized the need for more technological data to evaluate the vibration problems associated with blasting. Both the operators and the general public need adequate safeguards based upon factual data to protect their specific interests. The coal mine industry needs reliable information from which to change blasting operations to reduce the number and severity of major damage claims and eliminate the growing number of nuisance complaints. The problem is of major concern not only to coal mine operators and nearby property owners, but also to federal, state and local governments. At the same time, environmental control agencies responsible for blasting and explosives use require reasonable and appropriate guidelines to protect the miners' lives.

Four taconite plants were studied to establish the extent of hazard to plant personnel which exists based on long-term exposure to noise. The criteria for evaluation include the 90 dBA and 85 dBA summations of partial exposures. Data from extensive interviews were used to determine all work stations or locations which employees occupied and how much time they spent in ach location in a typical working day. Noise level measurements at every designated location were then made. By means of a computer program, these time and noise level data were us d to find the optimum noise reductions which would be required throughout each plant to meet both noise criteria. Subsequently, each plant was examined in detail so that the apparent sources of noise for each of the locations requiring noise reduction could be delineated. In tabular form, this report presents the hazardous locations for each plant, the existing noise level, the optimum noise reduction which would be required to meet the current and proposed laws, and the sources of noise which produce the existing noise level.

"On January 15, 1920, a man was killed by falling rock in a limestone quarry in Utah. The quarry was visited by a representative of the Industrial Commission of Utah, and the cause of the accident was carefully determined. The facts concerning this accident, and the Bureau's recommendations are given in some detail in the hope that quarrymen may take steps to avoid dangerous conditions, and thus reduce the liability to accident.The quarry rock face is about 180 feet high, and the ledge is covered with an overburden of 10 to 20 feet of a mixture of soil and boulder. The rock face is not vertical, but slants at an angle of about 45° to 50°, while the stripping face stands at an angle of 70° to 80°, and is flush with the rock face. The conditions are shown in the accompanying figure.The man who was killed was employed in breaking rock at the foot of the quarry wall. The sun had been shining on the stripping face, and probably thawed the ground, thus permitting a boulder weighing about 20 pounds to roll down the slanting face, striking, and almost instantly killing the workman who was working with his back toward the quarry wall."

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping methodology has been used to study the reactions of manganese dusts with glutathione, employing a-{4-pyridyl-1-oxide)·N-tert-butyl-nitrone (PBN) and 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) as spin traps. The results show evidence for the glutathionyl radical formation in the reactions of both MnO2 and manganese (Ill) acetate with glutathione. Based on these experimental observations, we hypothesise that the mechanism of neurotoxic effects of manganese might be due to the fact that the generation of glutathionyl radicals depletes the glutathione pool and reduces the glutathione shield against free radical products of dopamine metabolism and manganese induced reactive oxygenated species. IntroductionExposure to manganese compounds often occurs as the result of foundries and mining operations (1. 2). Other significant sources of environmental manganese include coal-fired power plants and burning of residual and crude oil (3, 4). Lately gasoline combustion has also started to contribute since manganese (methyl cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl. 0. 125 g/gallon) is being used instead of lead as an antiknock ingredient in automobile fuels (5. 6). Although manganese is an essential element in certain biological processes it is toxic in excessive amounts. The manganese toxicity is mainly associated with the nervous system (7-9). Symptoms frequently observed in manganese poisoning or manganism are disorientation, memory loss, anxiety, compulsive laughing and crying, mask-like faces, akincsia rigidity and tremor (10). In spite of numerous investigations to understand the mechanism of manganese induced injury. it has not been possible to localize the initial chemical lesion responsible for altered physiology and ultimate cell death. This may perhaps he the reason for failure in developing a successful therapy for manganese intoxication."

The Bureau of Mines sampled surface exposures of podiform chromite in the Caribou Mountain-Melozitna ultramafic belt in the Kokrines-Hodzana Highlands, central Alaska. Fieldwork began in 1979 as part of an assessment of the mineral potential of lands adjacent to the trans-Alaska pipeline corridor, for the Bureau of Land Management, and continued through 1981 as a Bureau of Mines investigation. The belt comprises six complexes of which the three closest to the pipeline corridor were investigated. Concentrations of chromite disseminated in dunite host rock make up mineralized intervals ranging in thickness from less than an inch to 5 ft and in grade from 3 to 23 pct chromium. The largest occurrence has an exposed strike length of 80 ft. Bulk surface samples were collected from 10 of these exposures, and beneficiation tests on the samples produced concentrates of metallurgical, refractory, and subindustrial grades. The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coals, functioning under the sponsorship of the American Society for Testing Materials and the rules of the American Standards Association, in its 1934 report recommended to the American Society for Testing-Materials5 that Specifications for Classification of Coals by Rank be adopted as tentative. These specifications, slightly modified as recommended by the Sectional Committee, in its 1935 report,6 wore approved as tentative standards by the society in 1935. The specifications rover the classification of coals according to their degree of metamorphism, or progressive alteration, in the natural eerie s from lignite to anthracite. The basic scheme of classification is according to fired carbon and calorific value (expressed in B.t.u.) calculated to the mineral-matter-free basis. The higher-rank coals are classified according to fixed carbon on the dry basis, and the lower-ran]: coals according; to B.t.u. on the moist basis, that is, containing its natural bed moisture but free of visible surface moisture. Agglutinating and weathering indices arc used to differentiate between certain adjacent groups.

This paper describes the mineral deposits and discusses mining and milling methods and related operating conditions in an important gold , silver , lead , and zinc producing area in Ouray , San Juan , and San Miguel Counties , Colo . , embracing 250 square miles . The area is extremely rigged , ranging in altitude from 8,000 to 14,000 feet . White men first penetrated the area in 1860 , when a group known as "Baker's party " reached the Animas River at the present site of Silverton . Difficulty with the Ute Indians and severe winter conditions forced the group to leave and discouraged prospecting until 1870 when a second party reached the area and succeeded in producing 27 tons of ore yielding $ 150 a ton in gold . In 1874 , a treaty with the Indians opened the way for settlement , and mining was established . The total production of recovered gold , silver , copper , lead , and zinc from 1873 to 1947 in the three counties is valued at $347,057,047 . The greatest amount of the total production of metals has come from quartz veins in a series of volcanic flows and tuffs covering the area and comprising a blanket 4,000 to 6,000 feet thick . The igneous rocks were laid down upon an old , erosion surface and are underlain by Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and pre - Cambrian metamorphic rocks . The entire series has been intruded in late Tertiary time by volcanic dikes and larger intrusive masses . Because of the great differences in relief generally , mining is con-" ducted through long adits to a depth of nearly 3,000 feet below surface in places . Walls of the veins generally stand well , and shrinkage stoping is the most common method of mining . As virtually all of the ore is sulfide below the zone of oxidation , flotation is the common method of milling . Generally , where gold is important , provision is made for its removal by jigs . Bulk concentration of the sulfides is practiced at smaller mills , but the larger operations make a selective lead and zinc concentrate or a lead , zinc , and copper . concentrate . ·

More gold is being produced now than ever before in recorded history. All over the world huge quantities of ore are being mined and processed, thanks to historically high prices for gold and the use of processing techniques demonstrated as cost efficient in the last 20 years. Over the past 10-15 years prices for many other metals have been depressed, and gold has accounted for a significant proportion of worldwide exploration and development expenditures(l)1. The revenues generated from gold mining are providing greater return on investment, more jobs, and more tax revenues to national governments than ever before. Emerging nations are using the gold industry as a springboard for development; developed nations are continuing to fuel their economies with gold industry revenues; and China and countries of the former Soviet Union are using the gold industry to generate foreign exchange, modernize their mining industries, and take the first tentative steps toward private sector participation in their economies.

"In 1912 bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district, which lies in the 28th and 29th land districts of Georgia and comprises parts of Sumter, Macon, and Schley Counties. Mining was begun in May 1914 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. Considerable ore has been produced in this region since that time by individual interests and by the American Cyanamid & Chemical Corp., which acquired the property formerly owned by the Republic Co.The area was examined in the fall of 1941 by representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, after which a prospecting program was begun by the Bureau. Drilling was started on December 26, 1941, and continued until November 18, 1943. A total of 1,192 holes was drilled in the district, and 3,679 samples were taken and analyzed.Mineral exploration agreements were signed by 146 property owners covering 42,128 acres. Holes were drilled on 121 of these properties, which have a total area of 38,778 acres.Drilling under this project disclosed several new deposits, of which four have been completely delimited. Previous prospecting in this area by mining companies did not find bauxite, as it lies under heavy overburden. Work by the Bureau indicates 14,412,000 long tons of ore containing 30 percent or more alumina. The total tonnage is divided as follows:Georgia State Highway Routes 26 and 4-9 traverse the district. The Central of Georgia Railroad passes through the center of the entire district (see fig. 1).The project was initiated by J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-metals Mining Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines. It was under his general supervision until July 1942, after which it was under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and Rowe McCrae, district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Flordia, respectively.John C. Feeley, Jr., was project engineer from December 1941 to April 1942. Other engineers who assisted in the work on the project are R. E. Babcock, T. M. Romslo, Don M. Coulter, and Walter T. Lewiecki.Acknowledgment is due the metallurgical staffs at College Park, Md., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., for analyses of samples and beneficiation tests.Acknowledgment is also expressed to Alfred D. Zapp, M. W. Harris, Elmer Kneedler,and Parke D. Snavely, of the United States Geological Survey, for their aid, data, and maps.Bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district in 1912 on lot 187 of the 28th land district, in Sumter County. This lot is situated about 1.5 miles west of the Flint River, on the south slope of the valley of Sweetwater Creek. Mining was started in May 1914 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. A mineral resource survey of the 236-mil (611-km2) Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn wilderness study area (RARE 11 Areas No. 1-155 G, Gallatin Divide; and H, Hyalite) between the Gallatin and Yellowstone rivers in Montana, indicates there are phosphate rock and petrified wood resources (fig. 1). The area also has some potential for oil, gas, and geothermal resources. Stone and alluvium are abundant but appear to have little potential for development because other sources are available nearer to markets.

"INTRODUCTION The largest known deposits of ilmenite and rutile in Virginia are in Amherst and Nelson Counties. Other deposits occur in the State, but their extent is not known. One of the most promising of the latter is the deposit in Roanoke County on the T. M. Bush and the H. L. Hutchins property near Roanoke. A geophysical survey was made of the deposit, followed by core drilling. In April and May 1946, four holes were drilled, totaling 822 linear feet.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Bench-scale experiment~ by the Bureau of Mines showed the gross effect of retention times ranging from 0.1 to 14.5 minutes on the conversion of high-volatile C bituminous coal to liquids and gases. The uncatalyzed coal was hydrogenated at 400°, 450°, and 538° C. and 500, 1,000, and 2,000 p.s.i.g. The percent coal conversion increased rapidly during the initial 3 minutes and asymptotically approached a maximum within 7 minutes at all conditions. Reasonably good correlations of coal conversion with time, pressure, and temperature were obtained. Temperatures up to 900° C. and retention times of about 1 minute are recommended for future experiments with the objective of producing only gaseous hydrocarbons and partially devolatilized coal suitable for use as solid fuel. The reactor contained 13 semicircular ledges, and the retention time was controlled by the rotation of scrapers which swept the coal from ledge to ledge. Only coal feeds that did not adhere to the internal mechanism could be used.

The Coeur d'Alene minim, district of Shoshone County, Idaho, has been one of the largest and most active lead-silver producing districts in the United States for the last 40 years. The mines of the district enjoy exceptional natural advantages with respect to ventilation in that the veins apex high on mountain sides and are most often developed to considerable depths, up to 2,000 feet, by adit and crosscut tunnels under conditions that develop large natural draft pressures; the increase of temperature of the rock with increase of depth from surface in at a low rate; and the average surface temperatures are low. These natural conditions have, in the main, resulted in well-ventilated mines with low temperature conditions throughout. However, where the development has been carried to considerable depths below the lowest level of surface entry, natural-draft ventilation has proved inadequate, and mechanical ventilation systems have been installed on the three largest mines of the district. Local conditions, more particularly those in dead-ended working places, have also required auxiliary ventilation by will fan-pipe units in these and other mines. A particular feature of the district is the number of exceptionally long crosscut tunnels that have been driven to provide entry to vein systems from low points adjacent to milling and transporta¬tion facilities. Three of these tunnels are approximately 2 miles long, and lengths of 3,000 to 8,000 feet are quite common.

In recent years over 100,000 persons have been killed annually in the United. States by accidents; about one-fifth of these have been workers in some of our industries; about one-third have been killed by motor vehicles; about another third have mot death in home accidents, chiefly falls, burns, scalds, explosions, poisons, asphyxiations, suffocations, cuts, scratches, and so forth; and the rest have been killed in public accidents, excluding those caused by vehicles but including accidents on railroads or electric cars, drowning, and deaths by firearms and. other means. Definite statistics on nonfatal accidents are not readily available, but at least 10,000,000 fairly serious accidents probably occur in the United States annually. The latest industrial-accident statistics are obtainable from 1935 National Safety Council publications, in which annual industrial fatalities are divided about as follows (in round numbers): Agriculture, 4,500; trade and service, 4,500; construction, 3,100; transportation and public utilities, 2,900; manufacturing, 2,600; mining, quarrying, petroleum, etc., 1,900.

The Canyon Diggings zinc-lead deposit is in an area of structural deformation of sedimentary rooks in Newton County, Mo., 14 miles southeast of Joplin, within the southern limits of the Tri-State district. Mining and milling on the several tracts covering the area had been carried on sporadically since 1900, and incomplete records show a production of 1,341 tonsof zinc and lead concentrates. On the northern part of the deposit the predominant metal is which occurs as galena, cerrusite, and pyromorphite in broken chert near the surface. On the southern part, lead is subordinate to zinc, which occurs mainly as carbonate and silicate minerals in brecciated chert to a maximum depth of about 150 feet. Analyses of samples from Bureau of Mines drilling indicate that approximately 77 percent of the zinc and 50 percent of trio lead i8 in nonsulfide minerals resulting from the oxidation of sphalerite and galena. Between August 12, 1948, and October 5, 1949, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposit by churn drilling and sampling 85 holes aggregating 10,571 feet of bore and sampling two mill-tailings dumps and three mine dumps. Factual data on the investigation and the logs of Bureau of Mines drill holes are presented in this report.

Mercury deposits were discovered in 1941 in the sedimentary rocks of the Cinnabar Crook area, near the head of the Holitna River drainage in southwestern Alaska, by Russell Schaefer and Harvey Wincholl of Sloitmut, Alaska. High-grade float was found in both Canary Gulch and Cinnabar Gulch, and indications of other deposits wore found in Aldor and Broken Shovel Gulches. Schaefer and Winchell's exploration in 1942 and 1943 revealed placer deposits of cinnabar along Canary Gulch. During prospecting on Canary Gulch, 3,600 pounds of ore was recovered from the detrital material on the Lucky Day lode at the head of the gulch. When retorted, this ore was reported by the owners to have produced 26 flacks of quicksilver. During the summer of 1943, Wallace M. Cady and Charles A. Hickcox, of the U. S. Geological Survey, spent 4 weeks mapping and investigating the area. Bruce I. Thomas and Harold C. Pierce, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines, examined and sampled several deposits in September 1943. Following their preliminary examination, in view of the exceptionally high-grade cinnabar present, additional investigation by the Bureau of Mines was recommended. A program of trenching, test pitting, and sampling to delimit the deposits was completed during the summer of 1947 under the direction of the author.
