"The discovery of large deposits of polyhalite (K2S04.MgS04.2CaSO4.2H2O) in Texas has led to an investigation of possible industrial proecsses for the extraction of potash from this material. This mineral was first discovored in small quantities in the European potash deposits in or about the year 1800. Chemists fire thought it to be a form of calcium sulphate, but a more accurate analysis by Strohmiyer indicated the composition as given by the above formula.The decomposition of polytalite by aster is very slow and results in the formation of a layer of gypsum at the surface of the polyhalite which retarts the solution of the potaseium and magnesium sulphates. To obtain a substantial yield of K2S04 in solution it is necessary to use large amounts of water at room temperature, for he concentration of K2S04 is limited by the low solubility of syngonite (K2S04.CaS04.H2O) whereas at 100º C. several days boiling are necessary to obtain more than a 6 per cent K2S04 solution even when finely powdered polyhalite is employed.In 1854 H. Rose discovered that calcination, followed by leaching with water, resulted in a larger extraction of the potassium and magnesium sulphates, as compared with leaching without precalcination. During the course of a series of investigations concerning formation of oceanic salt deposits, Van't Hoff and his pupils obtained sufficient data to construct the equilibrium diagram for the system K+Mg+SO4--Ca++.H2O for 25° C. and for 83° C. These data are very well summarized. in the International Critical Tables' and by Boeke and Eitel. From a consideration of the diagrams for 83º C. one would conclude that an extraction of polyhalite with moderate amounts of water at 33º C. would result in a solution whose maximum concentration of K2So4 would be about 3.6 grams per 100 grams of water and of M2SO; about 4.0 grams per 100 grams of water, corresponding to equilibriumwith the solid phases: Polyhalite potassiam-calcium pentasulphate and anhydrite.The fact that it has been found possible to obtain as high as 11.4 grams of K2S04 per 100 grams of water (see table 6) and an equivalent amount of MgSo4 (8.1 grams per 100 grams of water was obtained corresponding to a ratio K2/Mg of 0.98; indicates that the formation of these complex salts is very slow. To be sure, this results was obtained at 100° C. instead of 83º C. However, the work of Anderson and Nestall 9 on the double salts of calcium and potassium sulphates at 100º C. indicates that the diagram at 100º C. C. would not be greatly different from that at 83º C. This slow rate of approach to equilibrium when combined with precalcination of,of polyhzli-,a is the 17,asis of some of the more p:olisinE methods of extracting potash from polyhalite."

The heats of combustion of three chromium carbides, Cr23C6, Cr7C3, and Cr3C2, were determined by combustion calorimetry. Heats of formation calculated from the results follow: ?Hf°298 (Cr23C6) = -94.7 ± 5.0 kcal/mole, ?Hf°298 (Cr7C3) = -43.3 ± 1.7 kcal/mole, and ?Hf°298 (Cr3C2) = -22.5 ± 0.8 kcal/mole.

The heat capacities of four crystalline silicates of barium ( BaSiO3 , BaSiO4 , Ba Si¸0 , and BaSi₂0 ) and two crystalline silicates of strontium (SrSio and Sr₂Sio ) were measured over the temperature range from 51 ° to 298° K. The results were used to evaluate the entropies at 298.15 ° K. The entropy values were joined with known heats of formation to obtain the free energies of formation of the silicates with respect to their constituent oxides at 298.15 ° K.

The mining literature is replete with descriptions of methods and costs of operation at producing mines. To day the mine manager can find published information bearing upon almost any problem with which he may be faced. From this literature he can familiarize himself with methods employed by otter operators for coping with problems similar to his own, under more or less parallel conditions. Transaction of mining societies, publications of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, technical journals, and handbooks all afford valuable information dealing with operating methods and costs, Very little has been published, however, regarding methods and costs of equipping and developing new properties and bringing them to tae productive stage. There may be some question in the minds of many as to the value of papers on this subject, due to the great variety of conditions encountered. No two prospects are alike. Obviously, it is impossible to forecast what expenditure will be required to develop a mine from a raw prospect or even to predict whether the prospect can be developed into a productive mine.

The Ash Peak mine of the Veta Mines, Inc., Duncan, Ariz., is of particular interest in that the only metal of commercial value in the ore is silver. The silver is concentrated by flotation; the concentrate is shipped to a smelter for treatment.

THE ANTHRACITE region of Pennsylvania contains over nine-tenths of the total anthracite deposits of North America and produces all but an insignificant proportion of the total output of anthracite in the Nation. The whole economy of the northeastern section of the United States depends, to a large extent, on the mining of Pennsylvania anthracite, which is shipped to New Jersey, New York, and New England and is a principal source of energy and heat for that entire region. The responsibility of the Federal Government for developing an engineering method that will prevent inundation of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines and keep them in operation has long been recognized. To obtain a reliable picture of the anthracite-mine-water problem and to solve that problem, it is necessary to have factual data on the volume and the quality and character of the mine water handled by the pumping plants in the anthracite region, as well as the kinds of pumps utilized and problems concerning their operation.

The Welcome Creek Wilderness has small, dispersed gold placers. Pockets in the 25.5 million yd3 (19.5 million m3) of alluvium along Welcome and Rock Creeks have as much as $5.61 gold/yd3 ($7.34/m3) at $500/troy oz ($16.08/g). All the alluvium averages 20.1 cents gold/yd3 (26.3 cents/m3). Because of the low average gold content large-scale placer mining would not be economically feasible. Small-scale selective pocket mining, however, may be profitable. The alluvium along the streams in the Wilderness has little apparent potential for production of sand, gravel, or stone because alternate sources are closer to markets. The four lode prospects known within the Wilderness appear to have low mineral potential. No oil, gas, uranium, or geothermal energy sources are known to be present.

"Researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the mechanics of respirable size fragment formation in coal. The project is based on the premise that a thorough understanding of the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation may lead to techniques for reduction and better control of coal dust problems in mines. Presently, it is believed that the mode of fracture propagation which can range from pure tensile to pure shear or any mixed mode in between and the loading or displacement rate can influence the amount of respirable size fragments that are generated on new fracture surfaces during the fracture propagation process The essence of any coal cutting process is one of mixed mode fracture propagation. To study the crack propagation process, a unique mixed mode testing rig was designed and fabricated. This rig is capable of applying loads to a prenotched test specimen that range from pure Mode I (tensile mode) to nearly pure Mode II (shear mode) or many mixed mode loading combinations. It is also possible to apply different loading or displacement rates to the test specimen. With this rig, it is possible to create new fracture surfaces via the different fracture modes and under various loading conditions.These new fracture surfaces are examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterize the amount of structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that occurs during the fracture process. Initial observations suggest that the amount of fine fragment formation and the new fracture surface appearance is related to the fracture initiation conditions, particularly the fracture mode and the loading rate. Mode II loading and higher loading rates seem to generate more structural damage and respirable size fragment formation that Mode 1 loading at slower rates.With the mixed mode test rig, the mechanics of fracture initiation for a single crack can be controlled to better understand its influence on respirable size fragment formation. Such understanding may lead to methods which characterize the tendency of specific coal seams to produce undesirable fine fragments during the fracture process, or it may lead to rational recommendations and design guidelines or coal mining machines which inherently produce less dust.IntroductionAs part of a larger effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners, researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are engaged in a project to understand the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal. This project is part of a com¬prehensive research effort within the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust which is jointly administered by The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University.The principal source of the coal dust in underground mining is the cutting operation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and various European research organizations have conducted investigations into the mechanics of coal cutting for many years. These studies of airborne respirable dust (ARD) formation have concentrated on empirical studies of the various cutting parameters and their effect on ARD for¬mation. The parameters study include depth of cut, cutting speed and bit spacing.(1,2) Other studies investigated the effect of symmetric and asymmetric bit wear and various bit geometries and designs (3-5) Roepke(6) summarized the principals of proper coal cutting to minimize dust formation by recommending to ""cut at maximum depth (maximum advance rate) at all times, at minimum RPM, with the fewest possible bits, having the lowest possible included tip angle."" Techniques are being developed for measuring the mass concentration of respirable diesel exhaust particles found in underground coal mines. Studies have been conducted over the past five years to investigate size selective 18Dlpling techniques to measure the respirable mass concentrations of diesel exhaust and mine dust aerosol particles in underground coal mines. Results from these studies have been used to develop design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler.Three personal diesel exhaust aerosol samplers have subsequently been designed and evaluated in both laboratory and field settings. These samplers use size selective classifiers for the determination of respirable mass concentrations of mineral dust and diesel exhaust particles. Their designs are based on the premise that diesel exhaust particles are predominantly less than 0.8 µm while mineral dust is greater than 0.8 µm.One design, selected for field evaluation, consists of a 10 mm nylon respirable dust cyclone followed by a 0.8 µm cutpoint impactor and afterfilter. The cyclone removes the nonrespirable particles while the inertial impactor state, collects the mineral dust on an impaction plate and allows the diesel particles to penetrate to an afterfilter. The two sample fractions of the respirable particles ( <0.8 µ.m and >0.8 µm) are gravimetrically analyzed to determine the concentrations of the diesel and mineral dust portions in the respirable coal mine aerosol."

"The Lewisburg No. 2 mine of the Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Company is located in Jefferson County, Alabama, about 7 miles due north of Birmingham. At this point the coal from the Mary Lee seam when coked in by-product ovens yields an excellent quality of metallurgical coke suitable for use in the iron blast furnace; it is also an excellent steam coal. In mining, all three benches are worked. Coarse impurities are largely gobbed by the miners underground.In addition to giving the data obtained from screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of the raw coal, this report presents the results of slotted-screen tests to show the proportions of flaky particles in selected sizes, and the results of tests to show how much coal is liberated from impurities by crushing the coarsest sizes. These data have been obtained in connection with an extensive study of coal-washing now being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with U. cooperation of the different operators of Alabama. As the work progresses other reports will follow containing furtner data on the washability both of the Mary Lee seam and of other seams in Alabama and giving the results obtained in preparing these coals by various methods.Although a great amount of investigative work on the preparation of the Mary Lee scam was previously carried on by the various coal companies of the district, comparatively little of this information has been published. In governmental publications three references have been found. Forbes5 gives a number of sections with proximate and ultimate analyses of face samples taken in the mines. Gandrud and Britton'' show sections of this seam at Flat Creek and New Castle; they also give the specific gravity and ash contents of the partings of coal and impurities. In their paper Yancey and Fraser7 include washability studies and washing data from the Sayreton mine of the Republic Iron & Steel Co."

"The Old Cline mine, also known as the Old Cruse mine, was first worked for gold in1895. The property was opened by several shafts and trenches; and some stoping has been done, producing several cars of copper-gold ore in the early nineteen hundreds. Chalcopyrite is visible in selected samples; and, with the aid of a mineralite, several samples showing a considerable amount of scheelite were found on the old waste dumps.The mine is in Township 6, Cabarrus County, N. C., 5 miles north of the village of Mount Pleasant, 10 miles northeast of Concord, and about one-half mile south of Watts Crossroads. It is one-fourth mile east of the county road.When examined, the property was owned by H. F. Tompkinson, Concord, N. C., and was leased, with option to buy, by L. Nash. Titles of record were not investigated.As stated above, the Cline mine was first worked in 1895. The property was Purchased in 1902 by J. A. Clark and A. A. Smith of Atlanta, Ga., and worked for gold and copper. No record is available of the quantity of ore removed during these operations.A Bureau of Mines mining engineer3/ examined the mine as, a copper prospect on October 13, 1944.The Cline mine is in an area characterized by flat to rolling topography, dissected by many streams and rivers. It lies in the Piedmont Plateau and Varies in elevation from 700 feet to 800 feet. The surrounding country is partly wooded and partly cleared farm land.A quartz vein occurs in country rock of quartzite and greenstone.4./ The ore occurs in a series of quartz lenses, having a width of 1 to 3 feet and dipping about 750 NE, and striking N. 300 W. All these lenses have fairly sharp boundaries and in some cases are entirely separated from each other, while at other times they are connected by thin stringers of quartz. They can be traced for 1,000 to 1,200 feet by a series of shafts and test pits."

The recovery of zinc from oxidized zinc minerals by the caustic soda leach and electrolytic or chemical precipitation was investigated . With the exception of willemite ( 2 ZnO • Si0₂ ) oxidized zinc minerals were readily soluble in 180 to 240 g / 1 NaOH solutions . A high- grade zinc flake was recovered electrolytically from solutions which had been treated with zinc powder to precipitate copper and lead . Solutions were recycled to the leach stage with a recovery of about 85 percent of the zinc from an ore containing 21.2 percent zinc . Electrolysis was conducted at a current density of 120 amp / ft2 with a power consumption of about 1.5 kwhr /lb zinc . Zinc was also recovered from leach solutions by dilution of the solutions , carbonation of the solution , or the addition of sulfur to boiling solutions . A dilution ratio of 5 : 1 precipitated 59 percent of the zinc in 9 days . Carbonation of the solutions precipitated the zinc as zinc oxide ( ZnO ) and solutions could be recausticized for recycling . Zinc precipitated as the sulfide with sulfur was easily filtered and washed . Approximately half of the sulfur added to solutions was lost in the form of sodium thiosulfate ( Na S₂03 ) .

This report (arid related appendices) provides a description of the functional design specifications, engineering design specifications, and program of instruction for development of a training system for dragline equipment operators. Based upon a task analysis and training system analysis prepared under Phase I, Phase II efforts expanded upon and refined the functional design specifications. The training hardware components have been developed to a point shy of system fabrication. A detailed outline of the porgram of instruction and content sequence has been prepared. The objective of the training system described in this report is to provide new operators of dragline equipment with the requisite skills and knowledge to assure cost-effective development and an adequate supply of our human resources.

This paper , which describes mining methods and practices at the Mineral Hill copper mine , is one of a series being prepared by the Division of Minerals of the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts. of the United States . The Mineral Hill mine is situated on the northeastern piedmont of the Sierrita Mountains at an altitude of 3,650 feet in sec . 35 , T. 16 S. , R. 12 E. , and sec . 2 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , Pima mining district , Pima County , Ariz . ( fig . 1 ) . The claims (figs . 2 and 3) are in a gently rolling area with only scant desert vegetation . The average annual precipitation is about 11 inches . The nearest surface water is the Santa Cruz River , an intermittent stream 8 miles east of the mine . The property is owned by the Banner Mining Co. , a Nevada corporation . This report presents a brief history of the mine , describes the geology of the area and the ore deposits , outlines methods of prospecting and exploration , and gives methods of sampling and the estimation of ore reserves and values . Development and stoping methods are explained , and methods of underground transportation , ventilation , mine drainage , and safety measures are described . The concluding section of the paper is a section on milling . The Mineral Hill mine is an old mine that was reopened in 1951 after having been closed for 30 years .

The record of fatalities from mine explosions in the United States during the past 3 years has been the best in the history of the mining industry. During these 3 fiscal years, mine explosions have resulted in an average of 4I0 deaths per year, as compared with an average of 153 deaths per year for the preceding; 5 years; an average of 542 deaths per year for the 3-year period 1907-09, inclusive, just before the organization of the U. S. Bureau of Mines; and a yearly average of 265 deaths per year for the 20-year period prior to 1929. This remarkable reduction in deaths from mine explosions demonstrates clearly that mine explosions can be controlled; in fact, they can be prevented when or if the mining people of the United States see fit to take the readily available precautions necessary to bring about this desirable objective. Several large coal-producing States, which in the past have had numerous disastrous explosions, have been free from such disasters for continuous periods of as much as 6 years or even longer. The bituminous mines of Pennsylvania, the largest coal-producing State, give a good example of what can be done to prevent explosions; this State has had only one major explosion (and it resulted in 7 fatalities) during the past 6 years, and no explosion occurred in the several hundred bituminous-coal mines of the State during the past fiscal year. This is a truly remarkable record when compared with past performance in any year in the operation of coal mines in Pennsylvania.

The cleaning of fine coal, particularly for metallurgical use, is receiving greater attention. An increase in the proportion of fine coal in the run-of-mine product has been created by changes in mining practice, and a concur-rent deterioration in the quality of the fines has occurred because of more widespread full-seam mining. These two factors, augmented by the depletion of premium beds of metallurgical coal in some areas and the resulting shift to "dirtier" beds, are providing the impetus for adoption of improved cleaning techniques. For example, froth flotation, which has been used for years in a few preparation plants, now is gaining more rapidly in acceptance. Similarly, the dense-medium cyclone, which is used widely in Europe for making difficult separations, recently has been introduced to the United States. Regardless of the cleaning process employed, the finer sizes of coal can be treated with maximum effectiveness only when they are removed from the run-of-mine product and treated separately. No present process can treat the full range of sizes together with complete effectiveness. Flotation is applicable only to the coal finer than a top size ranging between 14-and 48-mesh, and cyclones require removal of all material finer than 0.5 to 0.3 mm. from the feed. Thus, the trend toward more-effective cleaning of the fine coal imposes the attendant problem of fine screening. Whereas in the past there was little need to screen finer than about l/4-in., present developments indicate that fine screening will become increasingly prevalent.

This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs. It describes briefly the manner in which slusher hoists and scrapers are used in connection with clock-caving methods at the Emma Nevada mine of the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation, Kimberly, Nev. Kimberly is in the Robinson mining district, White Pine County, 7 miles west of Ely. The district is served by the Nevada Northern -Railroad, which branches from the main line of the Southern Pacific at Wells, Nev., 140 miles north, Paved U. S. Highway 50 from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Reno, Nev., passes through Ely. The altitude at the collar of the Emma Nevada shaft is 7117 feet. The surrounding hills are covered with a sparse growth of juniper, pinon, and mountain mahogany.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1978, 12 companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 65% of production capacity. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 31% of the total capacity; Gulf Coast States 23%; Northern States 26%; and other Southern States 20%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1978 was valued at $5 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1978, building accounted for about 25%; packaging 22%; transportation 23%; electrical 11%; consumer durables 8%; and other uses 11%.

During a recent investigation the authors were interested in determining: (1) How many points were necessary to locate the deviation curve for copper-constantan thermocouples within an accuracy of about 0.05° C., used in connection with the, "standard" thermocouple of L. H. Adams (2) Whether copper-constantan thermocouples showing considerable deviations from the "standard" were consistent throughout their calibration. (3) How reliable the extrapolated portion is - that is, the interval between -183 and -220° C. of the "standard" thermocouple.
