In distributing natural and mixed gas, the industry is each year confronted with the problem of manufacturing gas in increasing amounts as the supply of natural gas becomes more nearly exhausted. The manufactured gas is now used in mixtures with the still available natural product, and will subsequently be used straight as a substitute gas. The gases that might be considered, and are producible by tried and developed processes, include water gas, carbureted water gas, and coal gas. Singularly, these gases can be used in this manner in ordinary appliances only when proportional amounts of them in the mixtures do not vary beyond rather definite limits, unless burner adjustments are made. The limits are defined by the specific gravity, content of inerts, and burning properties of the respective gases. Anticipating a future standard for city gas lower than that of natural gas during the period when considerable natural gas is available, there is justification for considering the possibility of re-forming natural gas and making a product that has substantially the same properties as other gases which can readily be generated. This report gives the results obtained during a series of tests made under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., re-forming natural gas at Toledo, Ohio, in full-scale operation in a water-gas generator having a grate area of 25.1 square feet. From November 1943 to April 1944, the Bureau of Mines put down 18 churn-drill holes aggregating 2,571 feet of bore in an investigation of the virtually abandoned zinc deposits of the north-central Arkansas district, principally in Marion, Boone, Searcy, and Newton Counties. The ore of this area occurs in flat-lying sedimentaries of the Mississippian and Ordovician ages. Much of the zinc is in the form of carbonate and silicate, although some sulfide has been produced. Preliminary studies resulted in selection for investigation of the Big Hurricane mine in northwest Searcy County, the Spies mine in northeast Newton County, and the Coon Hollow mine in eastern Boone County The comparatively large production of th.ese properties in the past was a factor in the selection. This report describes the work accomplished in the investigation and presents the data obtained.

This study was undertaken to provide a more adequate knowledge of the chemistry of the sulfide volatilization process for recovery of tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. The investigation was partly supported by the Department of State under its program for scientific cooperation with South American republics. The results of this investigation demonstrate the conditions under which cassiterite (Sn02) may be converted to stannous sulfide by reaction with pyrite or sulfur vapor, Quantitative data are given on the rate of sulfidization and on the vapor pressure of stannous sulfide.

Seepage forces computed by a finite-element flow program are combined with gravity forces in an elastic-plastic stress-analysis program to determine the stability of mine-waste slopes. Computer output provides a cross-sectional plot of the dam or embankment showing the safety factors for each element. The combined finite-element program called SEEP-SLOPE was used to analyze several trial embankments and the 1972 Buffalo Creek Dam failure Safety factors computed by the finite-element method (FEM) were compared with those computed by Bishop limiting-equilibrium method. For individual slip circles, there was little correlation between the factors of safety computed by the two methods. Both predict failure, but FEM shows a different mode of failure plus development of potential failure zones not indicated by conventional methods. Besides having a better theoretical basis than the Bishop method, FEM requires no assumptions regarding the location or geometry of the failure surface. As a result, the program will show progressive development of a failure zone, and areas can be pinpointed where remedial measures should be taken. In addition, nonhomogeneous cross sections can be analyzed, and zones of potential piping can be defined.

A sorption apparatus for measuring the equilibrium sorption isotherm and the rate of diffusion of methane from fine-sized coal was designed and constructed. Preliminary work that used Pittsburgh and Pocahontas No. 3 coal shows that the diffusion coefficient varies with pressure and that the fracture spacing in these two coals is substantially different.

The Bureau of Mines produced building brick of good quality in an investigation designed to explore the possible utilization of high-glass fractions of municipal incinerator residues in the manufacture of building products. Common clays, lime, and sodium silicate were used as binders for the nonplastic residues Test bricks were formed by dry-pressing, soft-mud molding, and stiff-mud extrusion. A run of standard-size face brick dry-pressed and fired in the West Virginia University Coal Research Bureau pilot plant demonstrated that SW-grade glass-clay face brick can be produced on a commercial scale without difficulty. A cost evaluation made for production of the brick showed an estimated cost of $42.13 per thousand bricks for a shuttle kiln plant and $28.70 per thousand for a tunnel kiln plant.

Fifteen boride composites were synthesized by hot pressing and evaluated by physical and incendivity testing as non-sparking tool materials. The incendivity tests, conducted at the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Albany Research Center, compared the boride compo-sites with standard cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide material used for coal cutter bits. Two titanium diboride composites and two zirconium diboride composites out-performed cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide in wear resistance and reduced tendency to cause ignitions. However, three of these candidates exhibited undesirable chipping. The remaining candidate, a TiB2-(Ni, Cu) composite, did not chip, nor did it cause ignitions at levels where cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide tools caused ignitions in the incendivity tests. Thus, this material appears to be a logical candidate for further development.

Amyl nitrite (C5H11NO2) is a pale-yellow liquid with an ethereal fruity odor and a pungent aromatic taste. Its use in first-aid treatment of cyanide poisoning has been suggested by Chen and his coworkers. Although not the most effective treatment, it is the only one that does not require intravenous injections and is, therefore, very suitable as a preliminary measure, which only involves breaking a capsule near the patient's nose until intravenous injections can be given. In the case of the sodium nitrite -sodium thiosulfate treatment, for instance, such injections require about 15 minutes. As amyl nitrite "Pearls" (small capsules containing liquid amyl nitrite) are placed in many first-aid kits by various companies that handle, store, or use hydrogen cyanide gas, it appeared advisable to investigate the explosion hazards of this material in air and oxygen. Accordingly, tests were made to determine the limits of flammability, temperature range of flammability of amyl nitrite saturated with air and with oxygen, and minimum ignition temperatures of this material in air and in oxygen.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects world-wide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Electrolysis of titanium carbide and a material consisting of titanium, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen as soluble anodes in Used electrolytes was investigated by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of crude titanium metal. Tests made in all-chloride electrolytes showed only a low recovery of titanium as well as a substantial volatilization of titanium trichloride (TiC13) when present in the electrolyte. Electrolysis at 750° to 850° C in a mixture containing 85 percent NaC1-15 percent potassium floutitanate (K2TiF6) yielded as high as 91 percent recovery of titanium from titanium carbide and 62 percent recovery of titanium from the titanium-carbon-nitrogen-oxygen material. Problems associated with the preparation of crude metal by fused-salt electrolysis are discussed. The crude metals produced from both anode materials were electrorefined in a sodium chloride-titanium chloride (NaCl-TiC12) electrolyte, and ductile titanium metal was obtained.

Corduroy is used for saving gold in small Land large milling plants throughout the world. Investigations by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mine indicate that corduroy blankets, used with or without a trap or jig in the mill classifier circuit, often are effective in concentrating gold and sulfides, especially if the gold does not amalgamate readily and if not enough sulfides are present to warrant the use of a shaking table, flotation cells, or cyanide plant. Most cold-mining countries include several or many small miner, that produce siliceous ores low in sulfides and gold, which can easily be amalgamated or caught in traps or jigs or on corduroy and shaking tables. At these mines the ore is crushed by stamps or bill mills, and the flow sheets include plates, flotation cells, and cyanide treatment, yet probably nearly as much of the pair minerals may be recovered by the less expensive plant. A well-known western maker of mine and mill equipment asserts, as the result of considerable observation of installed plants, that old and other valuable minerals should be caught as soon as they have been released by a mill, end recommends jigs to do this. A supplier of corduroy has informed us that at some mines this material is being replaced by jigs that catch gold as fine as 400-mesh. But for the small operator, inexpensive equipment such as a corduroy table may be better adapted and give a good recovery of gold and associated minerals.

The lowest number of fatalities from coal-mine explosions in the United States in any year since records have been kept was the total of 8 in 1949 and again in 1950. Even incomplete records as far back as 1870 reveal a larger annual loss of life from explosions. From 1890 to 1948 the lowest annual loss was 32 in 1946. A smaller total of 15 fatalities was reported in 1952. Figure 1 shows the total yearly loss of life from explosions in all coal mines since 1880. Those in anthracite mines alone are shown by the shaded area. The erratic variation of the chart line shows the difficulties that have confronted the industry in the struggle to control and eliminate mine explosions. Potential hazards have existed in marry mines without realization that only a small change in conditions could initiate a disaster. Many disasters causing great loss of life occurred in mines that had been regularly operated without incident for long periods. Although the number of coal-mine explosions causing great lose of life has been kept down in recent years, the exceptions still make the record anything but satis¬factory. There have been almost no widespread explosions for several years, but in a few instances many lives were lost from afterdamp. Although the violence and spread of mine explosions may be controlled, the loss of life may be heavy if many of the men happen to be in the path of the smoke and gases. For these reasons, the strictest controls must be maintained to eliminate all factors that might combine to cause even a small ignition of gas or dust.

Some serious fires have occurred in bituminous-coal mines because of short circuits on direct-current power systems that do not have adequate circuit-breaker protection. The writer's observation of circuit-breaker installations in numerous coal mines leads to the conclusion that many persons am not properly informed as to the true functions, limitations, and operation of circuit breakers. Faulty protection results in fire hazards that endanger lives and property. Proper circuit-breaker protection would greatly minimize or, in many instances, eliminate the hazards; moreover, many operating advantages of proper application of modern circuit breakers would be gained. The purpose of this circular is to show why fire hazards exist in many mines despite the use of circuit breakers and how, the hazards may be overcome. A method is given for determining whether additional circuit-breaker, protection is required for a specific 250/275-volt direct-current distribution system, and, if so, the approximate locations and capacities of the required supplemental breakers.

This paper describing the concentrator practice of the Montana Mines Corporation at Helena. Mont., is one of a series of articles on milling methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Spring Hill mine and mill are located 4 miles south and west of Helena, Mont., near the head of Grizzly Gulch. The mine portal is on the east slope of the gulch, and the mill is directly opposite on the west slope. Grizzly Gulch is one of the tyro gulches which unite at the south end of Helena to form Last Chance Gulch, on which the main street of Helena is built.

In conjunction with its research program on separation, recovery, and recycling of metal, mineral, and energy-based materials in urban refuse, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing means to reuse and recycle plastics discarded in raw municipal waste. Experimental work on plastic waste from a community collection has produced some guidelines for systematic methods of processing, including air classification, cleaning, separation, and use or disposal. Sink-float methods are a practical means of separation into types. Methods for final disposition of the plastic waste include refabrication, thermal decomposition, and incineration.

Two methods of testing anchorages of headed expansion-type mine roof bolts were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine whether they are acceptable for general use. In both methods a load was applied to a tightened bolt with a hydraulic jack. A total of 80 tests, 40 using each method, was conducted in 4 test areas in 3 commercial coal mines. Electric resistance strain gages were used in all tests to indicate true bolt load as the bolt was tightened and when an additional load was applied with the hydraulic jack. The results indicate that: 1. The relationship between the true bolt load and the jack load will vary according to the test method until the two loads become equal. The bolt load-jack load relationship below this point can be determined only with strain gages. 2. The point at which the two loads become equal can be estimated by noting the load when the hardened washer becomes loose in one method, and when the bearing plate becomes loose from the roof in the other. It also can be approximated for either method of testing by noting the load when the first abrupt change in the slope of the jack load-bolt displacement curve occurs. 3. The anchorage characteristics of the test bolt can be determined from the data obtained from either method by examining the slope of the jack load-bolt displacement curve above the point at which the true bolt load is equal to the jack load.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing, and grinding methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that in many instances publication of total production costs may cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The following report deals with the methods employed by the Malvern Clay Co., Malvern, Carroll County, Ohio. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of the following persons: H. C. This paper is a tabular compilation of data contained in a series of information circulars dealing with mining methods and costs at a large number of mines in the United States and some foreign countries. There circulars have been published from time to time during the years 1929 to 1934 inclusive. From time to time, as enough data became available in these circulars, other circulars and. bulletins have been published in which the data bearing upon different phases of nine operation were summarized, discussed, and analyzed. The present paper is a compilation of data on costs of drifting and crosscutting contained in earlier circulars, .designed to assemble this information in a convenient form for reference without attempting lengthy discussion of details of drifting and crosscutting practice. For such details the reader is referred to the circulars on individual mines.

In recent years, west-central Arizona and adjacent California have become the focus of geologic and exploration attention because of its excellent exposure of detachment-fault terrane. Detachment faults, normal faults with nearly horizontal fault planes, are the result of regional extension. Rocks on the lower plate consist of mylonitized intrusive, metasedimentary and crystalline rocks highly altered to chlorite; upper plate rocks comprise sedimentary, volcanic, metasedimentary, and metavolcanic rocks. The movement of the detachment fault causes the rocks on the upper plate to be severely fractured and brecciated thus making them Ideal conduits for mineralizing fluids. Mineralization favored the more reactive sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the upper plate. Three gold deposits, located in upper plate rocks, are currently being mined along the Colorado River corridor: the Picacho Mine near Yuma, Arizona, 70 mi south of the study area; the American Girl Mine In southeastern California, 60 mi southwest; and the Copperstone Mine near the southern end of this study area. Samples from the above three mines were used to create a geochemical model of detachment-related gold deposits. Antimony, arsenic, barium, copper, mercury, molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, and zinc all occur In the mine samples in concentrations at least three times greater than found elsewhere in similar rock types. Samples taken by the Bureau from the wilderness study areas contain similar anomalous concentrations of the same elements as well as elevated concentrations of several other elements Including: lead, fluorine, cerium, uranium, and samarium.

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) conducted a mineral resource investigation of the French Creek-Patrick Butte study area, in west central Idaho during 1989. No mineral resources or significant occurrences were identified. Other than small scale placer gold, no mineral production is known or recorded. At least 100 lode and 150 placer claims have been located in the study area. Most of the area was examined by ground or areal surveys, and 110 lode and 60 placer samples were taken. Four lode prospects were examined in detail, and all placer claim locations were sampled.
