Particularly now they are relevant to LDC development. Small mine concepts are reviewed with emphasis on sizing, speed, and LDC problems. The special problem of gold and the precious metals is examined with respect to mine evaluation. Small mine analysis is introduced with emphasis on the financial model including gold price forecast considerations.

Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) facility has operated since May 1986. The original facility had a design capacity of 22.6 kt/a (25,000 stpy) of electrowon copper cathode produced by processing pregnant leach solution from an open pit-heap leach operation. In 1988, the plant was expanded to 45.3 kt/ a (50,000 stpy) to incorporate processing in-situ leach solutions. This pager focuses primarily on the heap leaching area with regard to exploration, testing, feasibility, permitting, design and construction, and operating practices. Research using surfactant leaching aids to enhance copper recovery is also discussed.

The ion-exchange capabilities of natural zeolites from the western United States, representing the species chabazite, clinoptilolite, erionite and mordenite, have been studied because of their potential use in environmental remediation and in hydrometallurgical processes. These raw zeolite samples were found to contain Na+, K+, Ca+2 and Mg+2 as exchangeable cations, and all of these, with the exception of Na+, were found to seriously interfere with the exchange of Cu+2 from solution. Placing these zeolites in the Na+ form was found to increase their cation-exchange capacity, often massively. In addition, the elution of Cu+2 from the Na+ pre-exchanged zeolite is greatly facilitated when the deleterious K+, Ca+2 and Mg+2 have been largely expelled. The relative influence of these deleterious ions on the uptake and elution of Cu+2 was determined.

The electrochemical nature of mineral-grinding media interaction in the wet grinding of one and two sulfide mineral ores was investigated with regard to the flotation behaviors of the minerals. Two iron sulfides (pyrite and pyrrhorite) and mild steel were used to represent the sulfide minerals and the grinding media, respectively. Galvanic currents in two- and three-electrode combinations under abrasive and non abrasive conditions were correlated with the floatabilities of these minerals under corresponding conditions.

INTRODUCTION The introduction of 165-mm (61/z-in.) holes to underground mining operations has made possible the application of Canadian Industries Ltd's (CIL) vertical crater retreat (VCR) mining method, illustrated in the accompanying sketches. This unique and revolutionary new application of spherical charge technology (see the Appendix), when applied to primary stopes and pillar recovery, eliminates raise boring, slot cutting, and dilu¬tion of ore by backfill; greatly improves fragmentation; reduces labor and time requirements; eliminates uphole drilling and blasting; and minimizes or completely elimi¬nates damages by blasts to the walls and retreating backs of the stope or pillar. If vertical large diameter holes are drilled on a designed pattern from a cut over a stope or pillar to bottom in the back of the undercut, and spherical charges of explosives are placed within these holes at the calculated optimum distance from the back of the undercut and detonated, a vertical thickness of ore will be blasted downwards into the previously mined area. Repeating this loading and blasting procedure, min¬ing of the stope or pillar retreats in the form of horizontal slices in a vertical upwards direction until the top sill is blasted and the mining of a stope or pillar is completed. The VCR method is also applicable to drop raises and has the potential to replace all other raising methods under most circumstances. PILLAR RECOVERY Levack Mine Inco Metals Co., Ontario Div., provided the first opportunity for the method in pillar recovery. The Levack mine's high grade ore pillar No. 4800 on the 975-m (3200-ft) level was used for the production¬scale experiment (Figs. 1 to 3). The pillar was about 49 m (160 ft) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide, and 20 to 26 m (65 to 85 ft) high. The mined area on both sides of the pillar was backfilled with a 1:30 cement:sand mixture. The pillar was removed in two phases. In phase 1, the standard uphole method was used to blast down the 18-m (60-ft) long section of waste from the bottom of the ore into the undercut. From the pillar's top sill, 165-mm (61/a-in.) holes were drilled downward into the pillar, and by measuring the depth of the holes, the results of the uphole blast were determined and roof line 1 was established. The bottom of each hole was plugged, then filled with sand to place the center of gravity of each spherical charge (loaded from the top sill) at a predetermined optimum distance from the horizontal free surface. The charges were then detonated. After detonation, both draw drifts were full of extremely well-broken material. The depth of each hole was measured again, and the plot of these depths re¬sulted in roof line 2. The same blasting procedure was repeated and the resultant new back elevation was marked by roof line 3. The poor results of the initial uphole blast at one location (notice the peak in area 1) appeared to influ¬ence the subsequent new backs. A third blast success¬fully evened the back, and resulted in roof line 4. An unblasted slab averaging 6.3 m (20.9 ft) thick remained below the pillar's top elevation as the final sill. In all three spherical charge blasts fragmentation of the blasted material was extremely fine. The backfill was fully exposed on both sides of the now-blasted pillar. The backfill remained undamaged and the ore was not diluted by sand. The remnants of all the 165-mm (61/2 -in.) holes remained clean and undamaged, and the holes had well-defined bottoms that could be easily measured and plugged. Each blast took down a 3.9 to 4.2-m (13 to 14-ft) thick horizontal slab of ore. Productivity was three times greater than that of the previously practiced cut-and-fill method. Since this was the first such experiment, blasting the remaining 6-m (20-ft) thick final slab was the sub¬ject of some deliberation. If the described method was repeated, we could have ended up with a 1.8-m (6-ft) thick sill unsafe to work on. Physical mine modeling and computer simulation techniques were used to conduct technical feasibility and economic analyses of selected pit configurations for surface mining a single coal seam dipping at about 15% to a maximum depth of 46 m (150 ft). Pit orientations along the true dip (dipline), along the strike (strikeline), and along an apparent dip were studied. Physical models of each pit configuration were prepared first to delineate potential operational problem areas and also to furnish data for the computer simulation models. A dragline microsimulation, a shovel/truck simulation, and a surface mine cost analysis models were used to conduct the study. Sensitivity analyses were conducted on variables such as the pit width, block length, and seam pitch. The productivity (m3/h) of the mining equipment (dragline or stripping shovel) under each set of conditions was used to optimize the pit configuration. Both block length and panel width were found to significantly affect the dragline productivity. Larger size trucks were preferable to smaller size trucks in the pit con¬figuration along an apparent dip. The cost analysis results showed that the pit configuration along the seam dip was more economical than the pit along the strike or along an apparent dip for the mining condition studied.

The heterogeneous distributions of nodule sizes, cover-ages and abundances and the variability of their burial und association with sediments and rock outcrops on the seafloor have emerged as crucial parameters in considering the exploitation potential of the manganese nodules in the central part of the Indian Ocean. Nodules with the long axis measuring from 20 and 40 mm (0.8 and 1.6 in.) account for nearly 60% to 70% of those evaluated from photographic and grab-sample data. In addition, 75% of the nodules (by weight) are between 20 and 60 mm (0.8 to 2.4 in.). The distribution of nodules with abundances ranging from 1 to 20 kg/m2 as well as coverages of 1 % to 90% on the seafloor are important considerations in demarcating the potential areas for nodule mining. The mining of areas with higher concentrations of nodules, such as along slopes associated with less sediment, would result in the enhanced recovery of nodules compared to areas with low nodule concentrations, such as in valleys and plains where thick sediment covers occur. The mining head will encounter substrates such as hard rock exposures, either with or without Fe-Mn encrustations, as well as soft sediment layers in the nodule fields. It must be able to collect buried nodules under sediment cover, and it must be able to negotiate uphill and downhill slopes in mining areas. Mapping prior to mining must delineate areas to he avoided and must define locations to be mined. The requirements suggest that the nodule collector must be a dynamic (active) system with sensors to detect areas of potential nodule concentrations, as well as features that are hazardous (or unfavorable) for mining operations.

When OSHA came into existence in 1970, it adopted national consensus standards to improve safety and health conditions in work places. Coke oven emissions, which are proven to cause cancer and respiratory diseases, were regulated by the coal tar pitch volatile standard, adopted from the 1969 edition of the Threshold Limit Values for Airborne Contaminants by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. The coal tar pitch standard, based upon the benzene soluble fraction of total particulates, limits the personal exposure to 200 micrograms of the benzene soluble fractions of total particulate per cubic meter of air. This standard can be classified as a performance standard because only general limits are set which allows the employer to choose for themselves the means to comply. Both the United Steelworkers of America and the American Iron and Steel Institute petitioned the Secretary of Labor to write a new standard for coke oven missions, each thinking the coal tar pitch standard unsatisfactory.

Recent developments in expanded PTFE membrane filter cloths offer high flow rates and sub-micron particle removal. These high strength, industrial grade filter cloths can be tailored for tubular filters, leaf filters and rotary vacuum drums. Filtration techniques using tubular filters make possible filtration of difficult slurries with the elimination/reduction of filter aids and chemical additives. This paper describes principles of surface filtration, applying the membrane filter cloth and comparisons to gravity separators. Benefits to the mining industry include clear effluent, enhanced solids recovery and accelerated cost payback.

Building on the research results and knowledge obtained from the ongoing National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Gas Well Stability Research, researchers from the NIOSH provided detailed analyses on potential longwall mining and gas well casing interactions at an unconventional shale gas well pad in a West Virginia longwall mine. Following the recommendations from recent research findings, the 5-1/2-inch production casings in all five wells were left uncemented from 4,200 feet below the surface to the surface. Prior to the first longwall panel excavation, NIOSH researchers conducted sophisticated three-dimensional numerical modeling to predict longwall-induced deformations and gas well casing stresses, which were compared with post-first panel and post-second panel mining 40-arm caliper surveys. The pre-mining predictions and comparisons with post-mining 40-arm caliper surveys were presented to all parties involved, including the coal and gas operators, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), and West Virginia Department of Mines (WVDOM), prior to the re-entry operation on December 13, 2022. To date, the re-entry operation is a resounding success.

The computer solutions provide for better service to customers and have helped increase sales. II. Summary Electronic data processing techniques were applied: 1. To automatically and continuously "trace" rail car shipments of bentonite. 2. To aid our sales people in recommending to glass plant purchasing agents which of several possible feldspathic materials is the best value at any of about 100 glass plants and to give guidance on the amount of value difference. 3. To help in locating plant sites for three blending or pre-mixing stations to serve the foundry industry at minimum cost and with maximum tonnage and maximum profitability.

Like our wives, the comminution of brittle solids is easy to recognize but difficult to describe. However, describing it we must. Describing the fracture mechanism of brittle solids permits the eventual mathematical quantification of the results, process optimization and control strategies. This paper presents a physical model of brittle solid comminution that explains why the slope of the log-log size distribution curves have a slope of one or less in the smaller particle sizes. To develop the hypothesis, modifications of the Gaudin Meloy physical model are made. In brittle solids, comminution takes place by cracks propagating through the material. These cracks may bifurcate as they move. Cracks may terminate either on the original surface of the material, or on a secondary crack within the material formed earlier in the comminution process.

During the 1980's. the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposed new regulations for the use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommended that whole diesel exhaust be regarded as "a potential occupational carcinogen", and that reductions in exposure to exhaust pollutants would reduce excess risk. During the same time, the Bureau of Mines tested new emission control technology to minimize diesel emissions. The objectives of this paper are to discuss the major issues regarding diesel exhaust emissions. especially diesel particulate matter (DPM) , and to highlight emission controls that will be available. DPM is a potential health threat because it is respirable in size and is composed of nonvolatile carbon with adsorbed or condensed compounds. These compounds include potentially mutagenic or carcinogenic hydrocarbons such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and sulfates. DPM contributes to the degradation of air quality in mines with typical mean concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 1.0 mg/m3. In addition to adequate ventilation, control of DPM can be achieved by implemention of improved work practices, regularly scheduled engine maintenance, and emission controls.

Gravity concentration at the Pegasus Gold Montana Tunnels Mine was initiated in late June, 1991 with the commissioning of a coarse gold scalping circuit that processes a small portion of the ball mill circulating load. The primary objective for the circuit was to reduce the risk of gold particles advancing to flotation that are too coarse to float. The secondary objective was to enhance overall gold recovery and payable gold ounces in a cost effective manner. The gravity circuit has proven itself to be a major success. The above mentioned goals have been achieved, and they have been maintained at record throughput rates that are 30% higher than when the circuit was commissioned. A number of modifications and improvements were made over the last three years which allowed the gravity circuit to keep pace with the higher tonnage, these are discussed in detail in the body of this paper. The overall approach to gravity concentration at Montana Tunnels has always been to optimize production rather than maximize the gold ounces produced. This philosophy has now yielded a circuit expansion and relocation project which will allow for an estimated 50% increase in gravity gold production, while reducing the overall unit costs of production significantly. This paper will review historical gravity circuit performance, improvements, and the current relocation and expansion project.

Monitoring on Whites waste rock dump at Rum Jungle has provided a unique opportunity to assess the effectiveness of a cover in the medium term. Temperature and oxygen concentration profiles have been measured continuously, from some years before the cover was put in place in 1983 until the present. Lysimeters have been used to measure water infiltration rates. Heat and oxygen transport processes in the dump have been modelled and compared with field data, enabling oxidation rates to be quantified both before and after the cover was put in place. It has been found that the cover reduced the overall oxidation rate to between one third and one half of the uncovered rate. There is evidence that both the overall oxidation rate and water infiltration rate have increased in recent years.

Incidents associated with secondary dust ignitions in the mining of massive sulphide ore deposits are of major concern in Canadian underground metal mines. During stope or development blasting, a highly concentrated cloud of sulfide dust is created and may be ignited, resulting a secondary explosion which releases a considerable volume of sulphur dioxide and possibly other sulphur gases. The consequent pressure, heat and toxic gases can result in loss of life, significant damage to equipment and loss of production. These losses are expensive and should be prevented. Explosions of this type have occurred at the H-W mine of Westmin Resources mainly in the development headings and cut and fill stapes. This paper presents the results of a study conducted at the H-W mine to compare dust sampling methods for explosivity tests. The associated benefits and pitfalls of each sampling technique are examined. The investigative work conducted to develop and test preventive and control methods against sulphide dust ignitions is also discussed. The techniques which will minimize the risk of sulphide dust ignition in metalliferous mines are outlined. A review of current preventive and control measures practised at the H-W mine is also presented.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines evaluation which examined the extent of gas leakage from sealed areas in underground coal mines and measured the effectiveness of commonly used structures for controlling the quantity of gas exchange from these areas. Evaluations were performed on five abandoned areas in two operating underground mines within the same coal seam. Methane and oxygen levels inby the seals were monitored to determine if the gas leakage was unidirectional or bidirectional. Results from this and prior work dealing with minimizing gas leakage were then applied to a newly abandoned area. Also discussed are bulkhead site preparation, construction plans, techniques for monitoring the status of the atmosphere within the sealed volume, and a modified European method for controlling gas migration from the sealed volume to the active mine.

"An average of 1.2 fatalities occur per year in underground coal mines in the United States when a miner is struck or pinned by a remote-controlled continuous mining machine. Proximity detection technology provides a means to prevent these types of accidents by disabling all machine motion when a miner is in close proximity. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed the intelligent Proximity Detection (iPD) system, which continuously tracks the position of miners near the machine and disables only those machine motions that could cause a pinning accident. This system, previously demonstrated using non-permissible proximity detection hardware, has now been shown to be effective when implemented using an MSHA-approved system as a platform. Performance tests have shown accuracy, repeatability, and stop zone identification to be comparable to or better than the system demonstrated with non-permissible hardware. INTRODUCTION Underground coal mining room-and-pillar operations typically use Continuous Mining Machines (CMMs), such as the one shown in Figure 1. When CMMs first became available, they were operated from an on-board operator’s compartment that protected operators from roof falls and other hazards but severely restricted visibility and subjected them to machine vibration and high levels of dust and noise. To solve these problems, remote controls were developed to operate CMMs. Now CMM operators are free to position themselves for best visibility of each mining task and are no longer subjected to the rough motion of the CMM during mining operations or the dust and noise generated by the machine. However, this technological advance removed operators from the protection afforded by the operator’s compartment and exposed them to the hazard of being struck or pinned by the CMM or other large moving machines."

[The site] [Z]irovski vrh uranium ore deposit is located in the extreme north-western part of Yugoslavia, some fourthy kilometers from the capital of Socialist Republic of Slovenia, Ljubljana, not far from the Italian and Austrian border. The sandstone type deposit of uranium ore with medium grade is located in a foothill of Julian Alps. The site shows some typical conditions for this region, which demand special attention in respect to the incorporation of an uranium treatment facility into environment. Among these specific conditions the following site characteristics should be mentioned: - populated area of agricultural and recreational value, - unconvenient climatic conditions with excessive rainfall and long lasting temperature inversions in the winter time, - very pure surface and underground waters which supply the drinking water reservate for large area including the capital of Slovenia, - sharp relief, - unconvenient geological structure. The choise of technology The intention to produce uranium and at the same time respecting the natural characteristics and existing uses of the site made the design of the ore treatment facility relatively difficult one. In general, there were two basic alternatives available perform the task. First alternative was to adopt the usual technological flowsheet with wet tailings disposal and with discharge of used water i.e. liquid effluents into the river. In order to prevent the negative impact of such technology on the sourrounding area sophisticated water purification installation and costly measures in wet tailings disposal e.g. impermeabilisation of large areas by concrete injections, large dam constructions, uncertain capturing of the water sources should be employed. Second alternative was to modify the usual flowsheet by employing the maximal recycling of liquid effluents to the process and to dispose the solid

The recent recession has severely impacted the performance and results of virtually all of our natural resource companies. The depressing climate continues to linger and recovery maybe sometime away. Problems remain for resource companies in the steel and petroleum industries as well as the mining business. In February, at the AIME Annual Meeting in New York, an All-Institute session presented a variety of views on the situation. A. T. Yu, chairman of ORBA Corp., Mountain Lakes, NJ, organized presentations by top management personnel of four natural resource companies. This well attended session heard management strategems for the present and views for the future. A compilation and synthesis of these presentations, gathered by Dr. Yu, are presented here for ME readers. Leading off will be William A. Griffith, president and chief executive officer of Hecla Mining Co., Wallace, ID. Other speakers presented here include Wilfred P. Schmoe, executive vice president of Du Pont Co., Wilmington, DE; Frank W. Luerssen, chairman and chief executive officer of Inland Steel Co., Chicago, IL; and Adam H. Zimmerman, president and chief operating officer of Noranda Mines Ltd., Toronto, Ontario. First, then Griffith's remarks. Introduction The key to successfully managing a natural resource company in austere times is good management in good times. In other words, position the company during prosperous times to survive the times when the well dries up. Although we know how to manage properly, for various reasons we sometimes do not do it. We forget the lessons of history. We allow ourselves to be carried away by our egos. We fail to position our companies properly in good times. As a result, in bad times we find ourselves in deep trouble. We need constant reeducation in the things we already know. In the natural resource industries, proper positioning in good times involves becoming a low-cost producer, retaining the flexibility to pull in our horns, developing a lean and effective organization, and maintaining a healthy balance sheet. Nothing improves the chance of survival during austere times as much as being able to produce at a lower cost than your competitors. In our business, that means having low-cost mines - low cost because the ore bodies are high grade or favorably located, and because they are efficiently operated. It also means recognizing the competition. The key numbers are the cost to produce an ounce of silver or gold. Nothing else really counts. And our competition is every other precious metal mine in the world. Flexibility is important when one gets stuck with a high-cost operation, often because things do not work out as we expect. It is important to be able to shut down an operation quickly and easily, without high holding costs, and without disrupting the corporate organization. A lean and mean, effective organization of competent people is vital during bad times. A company will not have that if it is not developed and maintained during good times. Finally, a natural resource company has to develop a healthy balance sheet during good times if it is to survive the bad. Money in the
