The behavior of four different redox sensing electrodes (gold spiral, black platinum, chalcopyrite, and galena) during roughing and cleaning flotation is examined and related to the flotation response. The results indicate that the solution potential (as sensed by the black platinum electrode) is different from that of the pulp potential (gold spiral) and is only weakly related to the flotation response. On the other hand, the potentials exhibited by the gold spiral and the two mineral electrodes are related to the flotation response. The transient responses of the gold and mineral electrodes during the addition of flotation modifiers could indicate the conditioning time required to achieve flotation or depression of selected minerals.

INTRODUCTION Evaluation and optimization of mineral processes has been going on since the the first plant started hundreds of years ago. A huge mass of knowledge has been collected since then. The main problem with this type of empirical knowledge of complex processes is that it is very difficult to formulate and document. The methods used for collecting the knowledge is not consistent but-varies with "he person" that does it. In the late 60's and early 70's efforts were made to use computer based techniques to evaluate process performance and to formulate process models for mineral processes. Models were developed, such as the flotation model by R. P. King (1973) which is still used to simulate flotation circuit behaviour. During the 70's. a number of mass balancing packages were developed together with process simulation packages. The industrial sector also made great efforts to develop and utilize computer based systems for process control and evaluation. The expert system that BOLIDEN created in 1974 at the Kristineberg plant was a remarkable achievement considering the hardware (CDC 3600) and the software tools (FORTRAN) available at that time. The main obstacle to successfully implement optimizing computer control of mineral processes was and still is the limited knowledge about the dynamics of complex processes. There are, however. many activities going on in this area today and it seems that the technology is very near a break through. Process evaluation is the most important tool to improve and maintain the optimal performance of a process. Today dedicated computer based techniques are used for fast and reliable screening of the processes. The stages in process evaluation consist of three basic steps: - Data acquisition, manually or by data logging. - Data refining, mass balancing and parameter calculation. - Data evaluation. The refined data can then be used for model construction/calibration and subsequently for process simulation. This study describes the positioning strategies used by operators of radio controlled underground mining machines. The observations have implications for task design to insure adequate visibility and task performance. Radio controlled continuous coal mining machines have allowed many mines to increase safety and production by placing human operators away from the hazards of an unsupported mine roof. The operator is no longer confined to an operators component and visibility can be enhanced with proper positioning. Also, the operator is no longer subjected to the shocks and vibrations of the mining machine. The operator's ability to move freely about the worksite requires a careful analysis of several competing safety and production considerations. Thirty-five operators of remotely controlled continuous mining machines were observed using work sampling followed by interviews to determine where the operator was positioned and what he or she was watching. These observations were separated according to the task being performed by the continuous mining machine and summarized as position density plots. The specific task of tramming in reverse through a crosscut is analyzed along with more general summaries of the time miners spend outside of the policy-defined operating positions while performing other production tasks. The operators were: observed to frequently vary from company standard operating procedures (SOP). Many of the variations from company SOPS were based on task demands. Interview responses indicated that portions of the mining task place visibility demands on the operators that are difficult to accommodate within existing procedures. An improved task design process would include these visibility requirements. Also, the operator's vision can be augmented thorough video cameras in future teleoperated mining systems, and the operator can be increasingly isolated from environmental hazards.

The applicability of biosorbent materials for the removal of uranium and other heavy metals from synthetic and actual uranium mil 1 tailing (UMT) solutions has been investigated. The biosorbent materials used in this study were barium loaded beads of alginate, alginate-dextran sulfate, alginate-carrageenan, and alginate-xanthan gum. These studies were performed in stirred vessels and packed columns. It was observed that 100 percent of the uranium could be removed from a synthetic solution following 2 hours of contact time in a stirred vessel, and 80-100% of U, V, Mo, Mn, Sr, and Zn could be removed from a UMT effluent solution with a packed column. Kinetic evaluations were performed, using a generalized rate equation, on the biosorption of uranium with these barium loaded beads.

The design, modelling and simulation of solid-liquid mixers remains one of the least advanced aspects of minerals processing, due to difficulties in quantifying complex slurry hydrodynamics from first principles, and in acquiring reliable experimental data for model verification and development. This contribution describes the application of electrical resistance tomography (ERT) for three dimensional imaging of the concentration of mineral particulates in a slurry mixer as a function of key process variables (particle size, impeller type, agitation speed). It is demonstrated how ERT can provide a wealth of detailed data to allow model development, which ultimately will lead to much improved design capabilities and the generation of mixing models which could reside within Particle Process Simulators. This principle is illustrated using descriptions of mixer behaviour based on an empirical approach, although the measurement methodology described is equally suited to development of computational fluid dynamics models, cellular models or design approaches based on artificial intelligence. The experimental data can be built into a visualisation data bank, which acts as a "process toolkit" by allowing a library of process responses to be catalogued. Hence these data can be accessed for the purposes of model development, equipment selection, optimisation of operating conditions or testing on-line control strategies.

In 2001, the Radomiro Tomic Mine located near Calamq Chile, added a tertiary crushing facility. An 84" wide mobile tripper is used to fill their tertiary crushing storage facility. This paper is a we study to demonstrate the drive and control systems in use on the tripper. Of special note is the design concept used to allow the system to operate multiple motors in both demand and regenerative modes through a single VFD. Also noted is the use of touch screen local controls, handheld radio controls, starting/stopping/ braking philosophies, safety device interfaces, and the local to remote control interface.

Data from triaxial compression tests per- formed at confining pressures between 0 and 100 MPa are used to evaluate parameters in a contitutive model that is based on microcracking. The tensorial formulation is reduced to equations that are specific to the simple Loading imposed in triaxial compression tests. Procedures for evaluating the model parameters are described, dependence of parameter values on confining pressure is discussed, and prediction of failure is assessed.

INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. Geotechnical theory is reasonably well developed to evaluate the stability of rock slopes for surface mining projects. It is recognized widely that structural geology, groundwater pressures and seepage, and blasting are key factors that influence the stability of such slopes. However, our capabilities to model the structural geology, to determine rock strength along discontinuities and to model groundwater pressures and profiles are still very approximate. Plus, practical experience of the rock mechanics engineer is one of the most important inputs to the design of open pit mine slopes. To emphasize the use of practical experience, a number of case examples are reviewed here to illustrate key factors that must be evaluated. These case examples comprise a continuation of other examples presented in the Jackling lecture to the SME in 1986 by the author (Brawner, 1986). Example no. 1 In situations where the orientation of geologic discontinuities will not influence rock slope stability, extremely steep slopes can be developed, providing blasting and groundwater are controlled adequately. An excellent example of this condition is the Republic Pit of Cleveland Cliffs in Michigan. The rock slope in Fig. 1 isover400fthigh with a face angle of approximately 80". The rock is hard and massive, and blasting was carefully controlled. The original design of this slope was at45", a standard design angle at that time. The competency of the rock and the lack of critical geologic structure subsequently was recognized, and the much steeper slope angle was developed successfully. The rock proved to be so competent and the slope sufficiently stable that an underground crusher station was developed with entrance and exit tunnels excavated at the toe of the steep wall.

The Blair Athol Coal Mine (BAC) is a large open cut operation in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia. Current mine capacity is about 11 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of export coal. On-line analysis at BAC consists of two Coalscan 9500s installed directly on the output of the crusher plant and immediately before the product stockpiles, while a third Coalscan 9500 is installed on the transfer conveyor feeding the train loading bin. The two product Coals cans have a dual purpose. The first is to provide real time coal quality data directly back to the mining operations. The second is that of modeling the product stockpile with accurate on-line information. This modeling enables both production and coal quality personnel to accurately examine the coal quality of each stockpile with a degree of resolution which previously had never been achieved.

The objective of this study was to produce coal dusts for laboratory research that are similar to mine airborne dusts in chemical, mineral, and physical characteristics. In this investigation, dusts produced in laboratory comminution equipment were compared with continuous-miner-generated dust for similarity in physical characteristics. Mining-generated dust (MGD) and bulk coal samples were first collected from an underground mining operation. The bulk samples were then processed in the laboratory for size reduction in various comminution devices. These laboratory-generated dust (LGD) samples were subjected to size and microscopic analyses. Physical properties of the dust particles were studied on a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A numerical shape coordinate system (SCS) was also developed and applied to 300 particles from each sample. Statistical analysis was then performed on the collected data and characteristics of the MGD and LGD samples were compared.

Gold deposits in Hebei and Shanxi provinces in northeast China fall into three general classes: - Placer deposits - Mesothermal vein deposits - Disseminated and oxidized volcanogenic deposits Past production dating back thousands of years has all but exhausted the placers. The mesothermal vein deposits, incorrectly considered in the past as "greenstone" type, are small to moderate in both size and grade. Production from these granulite and amphibolite hosted veins, at present greater than from the newly discovered disseminated deposits, is expected to wane. Production from the disseminated deposits achieved only in the past few years is expected to equal or surpass that from the other classes of deposits. At least one "world-class" deposit is being developed.

A reconnaissance study of the neutralization potential of 30 diverse minerals, 28 of which are silicates and aluminosilicates, has shown that most of these minerals contribute minimally to the neutralization potential (NP) in standard static tests. Feldspars in particular give low NP values and would not be expected to attenuate the acidity to any significant extent in acid rock drainage settings. The BET-determined surface areas of the minerals vary considerably, and the large surface areas of some of the pulverized samples have clearly affected the NP values even though the standard static-test protocol was used for the preparation of the samples. The low NP values of most silicates and aluminosilicates are in general agreement with the laboratory-determined slow dissolution rates for these minerals. The results suggest that, in the prediction of whether rocks will be acid-producing, the most realistic measure is that of the carbonate content. In mine wastes from metalliferous ore deposits, the contribution to the NP by the non-carbonate gangue assemblage is unlikely to be more than a token amount until well after the establishment of an acid rock drainage situation.

This paper describes a procedure for minimizing the operational costs associated with blending sodium in coal at a surface mine in the Powder River Basin. Mine site blending is performed by adjusting daily production rates for high- and low-sodium pits. These adjustments are designed to produce a consistent sodium value called the blending target. The mine's contractual limit for sodium is sufficiently close to the field average value that any decrease in the sodium blending target may result in an opportunity cost, if the number of potentially minable tons is reduced. Conversely, any increase in the blending target may result in a higher sampling cost if more information is required to keep the blend within contractual limits. Blending parameters were defined using a geostatistical block model of sodium content that was based on analyses of hundreds of in-pit sample holes. Variograms for these data were used to compute the marginal costs of opportunity and sampling for a series of hypothetical in-pit drilling patterns. These marginal costs provided a basis for selecting optimum values for key parameters such as the blending target, production variance and in-pit sampling density. The benefit of implementing these optimized parameter values is that operational costs of sodium blending will be minimized over the long-term. At the mine where this procedure was developed, each dollar spent to increase the sampling density to the optimum value was shown to generate a $10 savings in opportunity cost.

This paper reviews the successful application of oxime reagents for the solvent extraction of copper and considers the role that well focussed research initiatives can play in bringing further radical change to the metallurgical industry. Particular reference is made to the Cuprex Metal Extraction Process (CMEP), for the treatment of low grade or difficult to treat sulfide concentrates, using the reagent Acorga CLX- 50 to recover the copper and the reagent Acorga ZNX-50 for the recovery of zinc from chloride solutions. Other new extractants, currently in development, are also referenced.

As environmental laws and regulations become more complex and the economic cost of non-compliance becomes greater, periodic assessment of environmental compliance, identification of potential liability and implementation of any necessary remedial action should be a standard part of the operational methods of any successful business. The title of this paper "Environmental Audits, A Shield, A Sword or A Trojan Horse?" is intended to draw attention to the fact that environmental audits can be used positively to shield a business operations from actual or potential environmental liability; can be used proactively as a 'sword" in both a marketing context ("do business with us because we conduct our business safely and professionally?) and as a mechanism for developing positive relationships with environmental regulators; and, used negatively, as a "Trojan horse", by developing information which those same environmental regulators (or the public) use in an enforcement context against your business or that of your clients. This paper will discuss the concept of environmental audits in general; the pros and cons of conducting the same; and the role of the attorney, as part of the "audit" team, to insure, to the greatest extent possible, that the audit process is productive from both a managerial and legal perspective.

Measurements reported in the paper were recorded in an active Green River, Wyoming, trona mine, partly as a teaching exercise and partly to provide the mine in question with additional input data for its ventilation network program. Measurements were made: - in representative three-entry intake airways in room and pillar sub-mains; - between the lower portion of a vertical down-cast hoisting shaft and the start of an intake airway system established in a room and pillar main; - in a representative downcast section of a divided vertical shaft, and of the collar entrance loss at the top of the same compartment. Pressure differences were measured with manometers and trailing hoses, air flowrates with calibrated anemometers, and barometric pressures and wet-and dry-bulb temperatures were recorded for density determinations. Where possible, results are quoted as Atkinson friction factors, and relevant measurements are recorded in some detail to show the magnitude of fluctuations in observed pressure differences.

An explosion in an underground coal mine can have a devastating effect on the main fans used to provide mechanical ventilation. The Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 75.310 (CFR, 1992), specifies that each main mine fan shall be offset by at least 15 feet (4.6 m) from the nearest side of the mine opening unless an alternative method of protecting the fan is approved in the ventilation plan. Also, each main mine fan shall be protected by one or more weak walls or explosion doors. This paper presents venting and fan configuration designs which provide a comparable degree of safety for explosion protection. Design flexibility is enhanced and a means for consistency in safety judgements is afforded.

In this paper, we use a new kind of fan charateristic curve instead of the common quadratic function, and give the existence and the uniqueness of the solutions to the ventilation network controlling equations, so that the existence and the uniqueness of the solutions for the natural air distributting problem can be conveniently given. We also give a conjugate gradient method with the global convergence to solve the equations having the unique solution. Because we adopt a very efficient technique of one dimensional search (or linear search) in this method, the method can quickly solve a lot of problems, especially in large scale problems. The second part of this paper is the establishment of the model of the constrained quadratic programming for the measurement adjustment of mine ventilation network. We give the algorithm to solve this model as well. The two algorithms given above have been realized in the mic-computer MC-68000 with Fortran codes, and the numerical results are satisfactory.
