Coal macerals differ widely in their surface properties and in their hydrophobicities. Therefore, it is necessary to study the flotation time dependence of coal macerals using varying concentrations of various frothers and collectors. In the present study, froth flotation is used to explore the possibility of segregating coal macerals based on their relative rates of flotation. Petrographic analysis of the various macerals in the concentrate were carried out, and the results are expressed in terms of the recoveries of various maceral groups and mineral matter. Results show that it is possible to recover a good volume of the reactive macerals without mach loss of calorific value.

"Climax Molybdenum Company’s Henderson Mine, owned by Freeport McMoRan Inc., is a panel caving molybdenum mine located 69 km west of Denver, Colorado. The mine utilizes long interconnected ore passes as part of the ore flow system. Knowing the approximate level of ore in these ore passes is beneficial for preventing increased dust concentrations in various production areas, as well as scheduling truck loading operations. Level monitoring has been achieved by using a strain gauge placed on the steel structure of the truck chute, an amplifier and a Programmable Logic Controller. This paper explains the concepts and limitations associated with using strain gauges for ore pass monitoring as well as applying proactive dust prevention and level monitoring interfaces. INTRODUCTION The Henderson Mine, located 69 km west of Denver, Colorado, is an underground molybdenum mine which uses a panel caving process to produce 18,000 tonnes per day currently. This process involves dumping ore down a series of interconnected ore passes leading to truck chutes. Trucks use these chutes to load ore and deliver this ore to an underground crusher. If ore is pulled below the lowest intercept of these ore passes, a ventilation pressure imbalance occurs which generates a large amount of dust on the levels where ore is being loaded into the tops of the ore pass. When a dust event occurs, work must be stopped until the dust settles. Once the dust settles the ore passes must be filled significantly before trucks can start pulling from the corresponding chute. This downtime and unplanned work due to dust can be avoided if the approximate ore pass levels are known. Strain gauges have been installed and tested on a truck chute at the Henderson Mine and the results of these tests have led to a series of concepts in using strain gauges to monitor ore pass levels. This paper explores these concepts and corresponding limitations and explains how the application of ore pass monitoring can be achieved with the use of strain gauges. Ore Pass and Ventilation Pressure Imbalance Overview At the Henderson Mine, there are typically two or four ore passes in different drifts that combine into one bin to create an ore pass complex as shown in Figure 1. When the level of ore is at or below the 7210 intercept (I82W), four drifts have a ventilation connection to each other and the 7655 exhaust level. A “piston effect” is created each time a bucket of muck is dumped down the ore pass. Figure 2 illustrates this phenomenon: as the loader in 621 dumps a bucket down the ore pass, the muck pushes the air in the ore pass down the 82A leg and back up the 82B leg which generates a large amount of dust. The bin regulators on 7655 cannot be opened enough to allow for this surge of air to be relieved onto the exhaust level and the dust ends up exhausting into the 625 and 627 drifts."

Passive seismic monitoring is a useful tool for measuring wave propagation in rock mass in deep underground mining. About 20000 mining ? induced seismic events of a hard rock mine, are identified and investigated. The travel times of source-receiver pairs allow us to demonstrate temporal change in velocity. It was found that the average P wave velocity is about 6000 m/s in the mining regions. Velocity investigations on the data during about three months around the main shocks show a significant decrease of the average seismic wave velocity after the main shocks. The sudden drop of average velocity change after the main shocks implies the creation of new fractures in the rock mass due to the main shocks. Afterward, the average velocity increased to a normal level after a time duration of several days. A reasonable explanation for the post seismic velocity increase is that opened cracks begin to close due to crack healing.

There are technical and commercial limitations to using high fluorine copper concentrates in industrial copper smelters. The presence of more than 1,000-ppm fluorine affects the sulfuric acid units generally integrated to copper smelters. Price penalties are normally applied to copper concentrates with high fluorine contents. Several process alternatives to resolve this issue were studied at the Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) Technology Center, Santa Luzia, Brazil. These alternatives included modifications to conventional sulfuric acid plants so that they can use high fluorine concentrates; removal of fluorine-containing minerals by flotation using depressants; selective leaching of fluorine minerals; and sulfuric acid leaching of the copper concentrates. As a result of this research, a hydro¬metallurgical process to remove fluorine and upgrade copper concentrates was developed by the CVRD.

Extensive surveys have been performed with GMD users to gather suggestions and understand the market wishes. As a result the new driver controller capabilities and functionalities focus on safety, high availability, operational flexibility and remote diagnostics.

Mechanized underground mines suffer from noise overexposure. Noise levels are often above the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) where underground fans are used. Sound levels in active workings can reach up to 121 A-weighted decibels (dB(A)), especially when fans are not equipped with silencers. Use of silencers seldom ensures PEL. Overexposure of noise induces permanent hearing loss among mine workers. A NIOSH-funded research project and field studies at six coal and non-coal mines revalidated the findings. The University of Utah undertook laboratory studies to reduce fan noise at the source. A new silencer prototype with varying noise dampening material was designed and tested. The silencer and associated extension can be repacked with different dampening materials. The silencer and the extension were used in various configurations. Attempts were also made to simulate field conditions. The tests demonstrated a maximum sound level attenuation of about 14 dB(A) at the fan discharge. A properly designed silencer offers lesser resistance and thereby better fan performance and lower energy cost. The re-packable silencer is more likely to be maintained properly. Lowering of noise level happens in audible frequencies (4000 to 8000 Hz) which are important in A-weighting.

Water sprays are a common method used to reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions. Various factors such as wettability, surface area coverage, fine particle engulfment rates, interparticle adhesion forces, suppressant penetration, and suppressant longevity have all been suggested as critical factors in achieving effective PM control. However, it has not been established which of these factors are the most important. Experimental work indicated that suppressant penetration is the most critical of these factors. Suppressant effectiveness was also improved using hygroscopic reagents which retained moisture, improving longevity. Maximizing suppressant penetration and improving suppressant longevity led to an average 86% reduction in PM10 concentrations in laboratory dust tower tests.

A computer-aided method for optimization of bench blast design in surface mines is presented. The design procedures basically consist of two steps. Firstly, a series of normalized, full- scale bench crater tests must be carried out in the field to find the optimum burden that produces the largest amount of acceptable fragments and other parameters that defines the effective fracture zone. Next, the locations and initiation sequence of blast-holes will be determined in such a way that each hole, at its time of firing, will be responsible for same amount of burden rock and will be in a position favorable to effective fracture of burden rock. A computer software "B.B." which can assist the second step of the design is fully introduced and its application is illustrated by an example.

Introduction With the continued downward pressure on coal selling prices, mine management must make its operations as efficient as possible. The problem is the same one throughout the mineral industries, streamlining operations to maintain competitive min¬ing costs (Born, 1991). There has been a great deal of research into better using production manpower. But the story is different for operations support personnel. Traditionally, planning man¬power requirements are done annually, with modifications to the operating plan occurring generally quarterly. On the other hand, the demands on manpower are often dynamic, being responsive to changing productivity levels, mine conditions (including water influx, bad roof, poor floor) and unanticipated project requirements (responses to machine breakdowns or a new section setup requirement because of a drop in coal quality in another area). Such changes may impact the manpower structure significantly. At times they may cause serious labor relations problems concurrently. Realignments and the generation of instability in the workforce because of active job switching (bidding) are a result. Most responses by coal operators are reactive rather than proactive, a situation that could be mollified by more accu¬rate and detailed planning of predictable manpower require¬ments. A manpower planning tool is needed that takes into consideration such things as changing productivity levels and conditions as manhour requirements for different work areas are planned, rather than blindly allocated through traditional staffing modes. Mine Management Support System The Mine Management Support System (MMSS) is an integrated decision support system that was developed using Sun Microsystems hardware according to the contract be¬tween the US Bureau of Mines and West Virginia University. The software used in the development of MMSS included X¬ windows (Scheitler and Gettys, 1986) for the user interfaces, LASER (Raman, 1985; Hayhurst, 1990) for the expert sys¬tem and graphics components, and the C language for general programming requirements. Sun DOS was used to allow the use of IBM-compatible applications software on the Sun networks. Sun OS is the operating system. It can be viewed as an enhanced version of UNIX. One of the components of MMSS that was developed to address the many specific objectives outlined in Grayson et al. (1990) is the work scheduling system. MMSS accom¬plishes work scheduling by using a mathematical (goal) programming approach to minimize the amount of switching of workers from their regular jobs to perform other jobs (Grayson and Nutter, 1991). Manpower support program The main objective of MANSUPP is to plan a detailed manpower structure for a mine by incorporating a production schedule, condition-modified work standards and manage¬ment preferences to predict required manhours for various support activities, for example, belt moves. This is accom¬plished by gathering and processing planning information the same way a mine planner would. The program is menu¬driven with the selection of a particular menu item locating the user in the appropriate area within the spreadsheet to review/add information. All of the interactions between productivity, section conditions and management prefer¬ences and their effect on the amount of support work required must be considered. Information regarding the productivity of a particular section, the geometry of the section, work standards for individual activities and section conditions must all be gath¬ered for input into the program. In the initial stages of development, it was decided that the program be developed in an environment that mine planners were familiar with in order to accommodate the use of the program. Lotus 1-2-3 or a compatible (Quattro Pro) met this environmental need. Other reasons included ease of calculation due to built-in functions, powerful command language and macro capabili¬ties. Each of the major components of the program defined are summarized. Production schedule This area allows the user to input a production schedule for the entire mine over 12 periods. Space has been provided for five sections, advance or retreat, and two longwall sections. There are several calculations occurring in this area that do not apply to the determination of manpower, but serve as an aid in production planning. Section description The section description area of the spreadsheet is shown in Table 1. The first three items are calculated in the production schedule area of the worksheet and then transferred to this location. The remaining information is input by the user to be used in later calculations.

A cooperative research project supported by the taconite industry and the Minnesota DNR was undertaken to establish quality standards for carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) based organic binders. The objective of this study was to identify the effect of CMC quality parameters such as degree of substitution, molecular weight, and purity as well as the effect of inorganic extenders such as sodium carbonate on performance. These factors have been evaluated by green-ball testing with two taconite concentrates followed by pot-grate tests. Balling tests with bentonite and Peridur were conducted to provide baseline data. At a constant DS the molecular weight as measured by viscosity had the greatest effect on green-ball drop strength. Dry-ball compression strength was most dependent on CMC addition rate and sodium carbonate content. DS was not found to have a major effect on green-ball quality for medium molecular weight CMC.

The extractive industries consist of five major sectors: - Mining equipment and services - Dimensional stone - Industrial minerals - Aggregates - Metal mining These industries produce some finished goods but mostly semi-finished products as they feed into other industrial sectors: Basic metals, fabricated metals, construction, chemicals, dyes and pigments, inorganic chemicals, fertilizers, rubber and plastics and non-metallic mineral products. These are the major down-stream industries in this study. Taken together with the extractive industries they form the mineral resource based cluster. The mineral resource based cluster is a substantial part of the Finnish economy: It employs 211 000 persons, 39% of the number of employees in industry. The cluster?s exports account for 20% of industry exports. Value added is 34% of total value added in industry. Investments reach 35% of total industry investments.

A computer model is presented that quantitatively uses the relationship between the interactive and dynamic processes of methane drainage, mining, and ventilation. The model includes simulation of the coalbed methane reservoir for prediction of gas-emission rates under the influence of degasification wells and longwall mining, ventilation network-generation and ventilation simulation. As mining progresses step-wise through the coalbed-methane reservoir, the ventilation network is created and subsequently simulated, iteratively determining fan requirements to safely reduce methane concentrations. The model can be used to quantitatively study the effectiveness of methane degasitication on the ventilation system in a longwall panel.

Strabag, in partnership with Arup, is constructing the Advance Tunnel for the Scarborough Subway Extension (ATSSE); a project by Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario (Sponsors). The 10.7 m internal diameter single bore tunnel represents a significant departure from the traditional arrangement of twin subway tunnels in North America. ATSSE is the first-time steel fibers are used to solely reinforce a tunnel of this size in Eastern Canada. This paper discusses the challenges with design and acceptance of SFRC segments and the state-of-the-art numerical models employed to check the joint performance. The advance procurement approach for TBM and PCTL’s procurement to accelerate the project schedule is also presented.

The Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) is developing cover technology for uranium mill tailings that will inhibit the diffusion of radon to the atmosphere. As part of this cover program, an improved radon flux measurement system has been developed. The radon measurement system is a recirculating, pressure-balanced, flow-through system that uses activated carbon at ambient temperatures to collect the radon. With the system, an area of 0.93 m2 is sampled for periods ranging from 1 to 12 h. The activated carbon is removed from the radon trap and the collected radon is determined by counting the 214Bi daughter product. Development of the system included studies to determine the efficiency of activated carbon, relative calibration measurements and field measurements made during 1980 at the inactive tailings pile in Grand Junction, Colorado. Results of these studies are presented.

Every operation connected with the working of a deep-level mine has, to a greater or lesser extent, a direct bearing on the costs of production, and hence, profitability of the mine. If adequate mine planning is not done in the early stages in the life of a mine, considerable expenditure can result from the cost of maintaining mine service tunnels, production delays in stopes caused by poor strata control, distortion of fittings in hoisting shafts, rockbursts and so on. In fact, the optimum profitability of a deep-level, hard-rock mine can only be achieved if the layout of the shaft systems, ore passes, tunnels, stoping areas and other underground excavations are designed to withstand or accommodate the rock stress conditions that will be created by mining operations. In South Africa where the deepest mines in the world are located, access to the underground workings of most deep-level gold mines is via vertical shaft systems and a network of tunnels connecting the shaft systems to the stoping areas. In current practice, there are two basic methods of extracting the gold-bearing reef,* namely, the scattered stoping method and the longwall stoping method. The choice of the stoping method is governed largely by the anticipated gold distribution and payability of the reef in the area, the geological conditions, the degree and complexity of faulting and dyke intrusions, the depth at which the gold-bearing reef is to be mined and the inclination and width of the reef. The longwall system was first introduced at the East 717 Rand Proprietary Mines Limited in 1942 in an effort to combat the rockburst hazard which appeared to increase with increase in depth. This mining method became standard practice on that mine for stoping operations 700 ft. below the surface. Since that date, several deep mines on the Central Rand, East Rand and West Wits gold mining areas have adopted this method.

Serrana's deposit contains three types of ore: oxidized, micaceous and silicate-carbonate. The results presented refer to characterization and fundamental studies performed on fractions resulting from the purification of five samples from the silicate-carbonate type collected in the mine. Each type was purified and submitted to mineralogical characterization, zeta potential determinations, and microflotation experiments. The samples, with exception of the barite, are mineralogically complex and the selectivity between apatite and gangue minerals is poor. Under the current state of art, it is impossible to feed the plant with the silicate-carbonate ore, unless it is blended with the standard oxidized ore.

A probability-based analysis method in conjunction with the finite element structure modeling technique to evaluate an entry system stability is developed. Variability of the rock properties and loading surrounding the entry system is taken into consideration to predict a roof stability by using the probability of failure instead of the common safety factor concept. A dynamic programming is applied to establish a recurrence relationship between the degree of potential roof fall and accumulated roof fall index in an area of interested. A probable distribution of roof fall is assessed by using a developed computer program, RFSTAB. The assessment of the roof falling boundary in the longwall entry system is used as the example to illustrate the procedure and effectiveness of this analysis method

Introduction A well-designed mining plan is one that minimizes cost and mining induced problems and maximizes recovery of the coal reserve. To minimize the negative effects on surface structures caused by ground subsidence due to underground mining activities, two kinds of practices are commonly employed by mine operators. One is the support technique, which leaves an area of coal unmined or partially mined beneath the structure to be supported. The other is the protection technique, which protects the structure when it is subsiding with the ground by taking advantage of the ground subsidence process (Luo et al., 1992). In designing the supporting technique, the only currently available method in the US is the one stated in the Pennsylvania Underground Coal Mining Rules (1985). However, the size of the support area designed by this method will be excessively large and result in a wasteful use of coal reserves when the overburden depth is more than 350 ft. A more scientific method is proposed in this paper for designing the support area. This method is based on a large amount of subsidence data collected throughout a number of major US coal fields and the authors' experience with monitoring and protecting surface structures that have been undermined by longwall panels. It considers the critical deformation indices that a structure can tolerate, and depth and height of underground extraction. A support area designed by this new method will not only assure the safety of the structure to be supported but will also maximize the extraction of the coal reserve. Design of support area using the Pennsylvania rules The Pennsylvania Underground Coal Mining Rules (1985) state that no underground mining activity should be permitted beneath structures where the overburden depth is less than 100 ft. An exception to these rules is provided for mine related openings that provide access to the surface for such as entries, shafts, boreholes and site-specific variances for entry development. If the overburden depth is greater than 100 ft, the mine operators should utilize either of the following: •Extraction techniques that provide for planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner, or •Support techniques designed to prevent subsidence damages to features identified as: •Public buildings and non-commercial structures [ ] customarily used by the public, including churches, schools and hospitals • Dwellings, cemeteries, municipal public service operations and municipal utilities in place on April 27,1966 •Impoundments and other water bodies with a storage capacity of 20 acre-ft or more • Aquifers, perennial streams and water bodies that serve as a significant source for a public water supply system, and •Coal refuse disposal areas. The support techniques require that a support area be left beneath the surface structure or feature to be protected (Fig.1). The support area should consist of coal pillars, with their size and pattern being such that their bearing strength is maximized. The total coal extraction within the support area should be limited to a maximum of 50%. The support area should be rectangular in shape and determined by projecting a line at a 15° angle from the surface to the coal seam with an offset distance of 15 ft from all sides of the structure. Operators of underground coal mine shuttle cars are exposed to numerous hazards including noise, dust and musculoskeletal trauma. The repetitive nature of shuttle car operation leads to fatigue-related incidents and soft tissue injuries. The poor visibility conditions, and dust and noise increase the occupational hazards to the operator, as well to other miners. To reduce the risks for all miners, towards providing a safer working environment for all workers, the introduction of autonomous shuttle cars is essential. This paper introduces a project to demonstrate the feasibility of incorporating autonomous shuttle cars in the underground coal mining cycle. The autonomous shuttle car will be able to localize itself, to map its surroundings and to navigate in an underground GPS-denied environment. It will also navigate efficiently by fusing different on-board sensor modalities, autonomously planning the optimum path and traversing around the mine while avoiding collisions with humans and other static and dynamic obstacles. This will be achieved by exploring and testing different state-of-the-art techniques and off-the-shelf components, and integrating them into existing equipment, i.e., retrofitting an actual shuttle car. Moreover, a modified mining system will be demonstrated which will incorporate the autonomous shuttle car, capable of making real-time decisions, into the mining cycle. The system will regulate the interactions between the autonomous machinery and the human dynamic, with emphasis given to the safety of the workers, and enable the real-time, remote supervision of the mining process. The focus will be on coal mines, where the room and pillar mining method is used. INTRODUCTION The growing demand for mineral supplies combined with the steady decline in the available surface reserves has driven the mining industry to mine deeper underground deposits. These deposits are difficult to access, and the environment may be hazardous to mine personnel (e.g., increased heat, difficult ventilation conditions, etc.). Moreover, current mining methods expose the miners to numerous occupational hazards such as working in the proximity of heavy mining equipment, possible roof falls, as well as noise and dust. In recent decades, the utilization of autonomous machines has evolved in the mining industry to provide increased health and safety to mine personnel and reduce their exposure to adverse conditions. Automation aims to remove the workers from the hazardous conditions which may be present in an active mining area and place them to a more comfortable and safer environment at a distance from the active mining face. Examples of incorporation of autonomous machinery in the mining industry include the fleet of more than 100 autonomous mine trucks that are employed at the Rio Tinto’s iron ore mines in Western Australia for material haulage. There are also semi-autonomous, teleoperated LHD machines employed at several mines around the world (e.g., Sweden, USA, China). However, the operation of the autonomous machinery in these cases is either partial (semi-autonomous, teleoperated vehicles) and of small-scale or occurs at surface mines where GPS significantly facilitates the autonomous navigation of them.

In order to study blast-induced dust in a hard rock metal mine experimentally and analytically, a part of a stope mined by Vertical Retreat Mining (VRM) was monitored throughout its lifetime. Dust measurements were used to describe the dust source, to study the dynamics of removal of airborne dust from the blasting area, and to examine a variation in dust production with a stope's progress. An analysis based on graphical and analytical comparisons of blasts taking place in a single stope is presented and discussed. Also, some transient phenomena of dust flow in the stope vicinity, caused by the blasts only, are examined.
