The success of any industrial mineral project requires an accurate forecast of the demand for the material. This paper develops a general method of evaluating these needs and applies it to the case of graphite. The basic method is to explain graphite consumption in each of its major uses by the output and manufacturing technology of the using industry. Once these underlying factors are determined, they can be projected to establish future requirements. This demand forecast is critical to the evaluation of a new source of supply, such as the graphite resources of upper Michigan.

Abstract - As the US coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face- ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity. Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 68% of the nation's underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing techno- logical climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.

Introduction Amidst the apparent chaos of the final push to complete a major construction project, a small group of specialists works with great intensity. Armed with yellow "in test" and green "turned over to operations" tags, these startup engineers follow detailed preoperational test procedures to confirm that a plant is ready to operate. They follow a test schedule designed to complete individual process system in the order they will be needed by operations. After extensive preliminary testing, the startup engineers begin the truly exciting part of their work - initial operations. The thrill of engaging the clutch for the first time on a 10,000 horsepower grinding mill makes all the long hours worthwhile. Preoperational testing and startup are of critical importance to the success of a project. No other aspect of a construction project allows such opportunities for success or failure, and no other aspect is so critically influenced by careful planning. At Bechtel, the tasks of preoperational testing and startup are among the responsibilities of the Mine and Plant Operations group. The Preoperational Testing Process Preoperational testing is the transition phase between constructon and startup on a new plant. It includes the preparation of detailed test schedules and procedures. The schedules are used to coordinate construction completion activities, so that systems are available for startup and operations in a rational sequence. The procedures form the basis for performing the testing and documenting its completion. Tests include instrument calibration, wire insulation tests, wire termination verification, mechanical alignments and inspections, and system cleaning and flushing. Where possible, the systems are then operated on water and their performance recorded. Normally, either the construction contractor or a team of specialists has the responsibility to perform preoperational testing. Witnesses to the testing may be owner operations and maintenance personnel, engineers from the design firm, or specialists assigned to the project who provide assistance and guidance to the contractor in addition to witnesing the work.

The world's barite reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India and the United States are expected to remain the leading producing countries, and the United States will continue to be the largest consumer. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4.41 Mt (4.86 million st), which is about 50% of capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydrocarbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the US requirements.

On the Earth's Moon, obvious hazards to humans and machines are created by extreme temperature fluctuations, low gravity, and the virtual absence of any atmosphere. The most important other environmental factor is ionizing radiation. Less obvious environmental hazards that must be considered before establishing a manned presence on the lunar surface are the hazards from micrometeoroid bombardment, the nuisance of electro-statically-charged lunar dust, and an alien visual environment without familiar clues. Before man can establish lunar bases and lunar mining operations, and continue the exploration of that planet, we must develop a means of mitigating these hazards.

The US Bureau of Mines conducted, through joint funding with the Colorado Mining Association, large scale oil shale rubble fire tests to investigate flammability characteristics and different methods of extinguishment. Ignition of large rubble piles was easily accomplished. Foam blankets could be used to control surface flames. The results of these large scale tests confirmed that water was effective but not particularly efficient in extinguishing deep seated oil shale fires. It took up to 1.7 times as much water to extinguish afire as anticipated on the basis of a simple cooling model, assuming 100% utiliza-

INTRODUCTION Underground gold mining operations are found in South Africa, U.S.S.R., Canada, the United States, Zimbabwe, Ghana , Brazil. Australia, China and many other countries. The methods used for extraction differ from highly mechanized trackless mining in the developed countries to the labour intensive systems of the third world nations. The climatic conditions in which mines are situated vary from equatorial to arctic. The rock temperatures and the depth of workings also vary significantly from shallow to extreme depth. The Western Deep Levels mine in South Africa is the deepest and exceeds 4.000 metres in depth with strata temperatures above 55°C. These major differences between mining fields result in significantly different ventilation problems in underground gold mines. The ore types also vary and some deposits have high silica contents while other mines extract sulphide ores. Methane may also be encountered in underground gold mines and can have a large influence on the ventilation practice. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research at its Reno Research Center to develop a staged agglomeration-heap leaching system and to electrowin the dissolved precious metals from the pregnant leaching solution. For direct electro- winning to be successful, the pregnant solutions generated during the Initial stages of leaching must be higher grade than obtained by conventional heap leaching. The precious metal concentration of the pregnant solution can be Increased by agglomeration pretreatment with cyanide solution which starts the leaching process during the curing period, by leaching with small volumes of solution and by cycling the leaching solution through more than one heap in a staged manner. The resulting pregnant solution is passed directly through an electrowinning circuit. The barren solution from electrowinning is recycled to the leaching circuit. Bench-scale research on the development of the staged leaching system and on the development of an efficient electrowinning cell are described. The Bureau of Mines developed agglomeration- heap leaching technology. This technology was readily adopted by the mining Industry for heap leaching crushed ores and mine wastes. Current research involves the application of this technology to finely ground feed materials such as precious metal-bearing milled tailings. Tailings agglomeration-heap leaching has also been used commercially.

Mining has traditionally been seen as a relatively risky business. Exploration is expensive and the failure rate is high, while start-up costs commonly run to many hundreds of million dollars. To justify the risk and expense, the returns from successful projects must also be high. Accurate estimation of mineral resources and reserves is fundamental to the processes of optimising returns and managing risk in mining developments. Systematic development from initial exploration through a series of development stages enables expenditure and risk to be balanced. As a consequence, large scale modern mine are more akin to manufacturing businesses. This paper examines the life history of a mineral reserve estimate from the perspective of a large mining company against a background of modern estimation and reporting requirements. It will also touch on what constitutes, in the author's opinion, `best' practice in reserve estimation, and how this concept can be spread more widely. Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. has embarked on a continuous improvement effort to ensure that Barrick Gold Corporation will retain its lead in the gold industry in years to come. The continuous improvement initiative is based on careful mapping of the key levers associated with each activity of business. The individual levers are then evaluated to determine their potential to affect the profitability and safety of the operation. The most promising are diagnosed for root causes. These root causes are then addressed to enhance benefits. Through a structured approach of mapping, brainstorming, evaluating and instigating change with follow up measurement and reporting; Barrick Goldstrike is anticipating an increase in throughput at the autoclave facility of 10% with little or no capital expenditure. The resultant approach to Continuous Improvement will be utilized throughout the Goldstrike facility and then throughout Barrick's world-wide operations.

The limitation of sulfur dioxide in power plant In this study, the following quality parameters of the coal emissions dictates that sulfur in coal be reduced to the lowest possible level before combustion to not aggravate the emission control problem at the stack. For coal-fired power plants, the methods in practice to achieve low-sulfur coal include mining areas with relatively low sulfur, reducing sulfur in the mined coal through preparation techniques and blending high- and low-sulfur coals. A prerequisite to the successful implementation of any of these practices is the knowledge of the spatial distribution of sulfur and the capability to predict its value in mining blocks. In this paper, the results of a study conducted to evaluate the applicability of geostatistics for describing the short scale variability of sulfur in a coal seam are presented. Four sides of a block of coal to be mined by the longwall method were extensively sampled at closely spaced intervals. The details of the longwall sampling plan and analysis procedures are discussed. The results of the statistical and geostatistical analysis are presented. The implications of these for prediction of sulfur for control purposes are examined.

Water movement and water chemistry were monitored in the unsaturated zone at two sites in fluvial tailings deposits along the Arkansas River near Leadville, Colorado. One of the sites was remediated by the incorporation of lime and biosolids into the soil. Preliminary results, based on data collected during the 11 months following remediation, indicate that differences between the two sites can largely be attributed to heterogeneity of the deposits. Remediation has increased the alkalinity in the upper soil zone, but as of yet, there is no indication that soils at depths greater than 30 cm have been affected.

The technology applied to shaft sinking has lagged far behind other construction activities. While surface oriented construction and mining have made great strides with new processes and equipment, the majority of shafts sunk currently still follow a drill, blast and muck-out cycle developed in the 16th century. Today, in 1979, the shaft sinking industry is in the midst of its own private industrial revolution. Millions of dollars are being spent annually by industry and government alike to spring the art of shaft sinking into the 20th century. The objective of this paper is to review a few of the newest mechanized schemes for shaft sinking. This is not a theoretical review, however, but a practical one, and deals only with hardware and projects which are currently on jobsites. Figure 1 shows the equipment. On the left is the 241SB 184, a 24 foot diameter blind shaft borer. This machine is currently at about 200 feet, constructing a coal mine shaft in Alabama. It is built and utilized in a manner similar to a tunnel borer. In the upper center is the 1211SR, a 12 foot diameter blind shaft reamer. This machine follows a 6 foot pre-drilled blind pilot hole, and is at work in Chicago. On the upper right is the 121BR, a powerful new blind drill. Just below it is the conical drill head for the 121BR which can utilize either carbide or standard disc cutters. At the center bottom is an expandable back reaming head which can be used to enlarge a drilled shaft up to a maximum of 16 feet diameter, or can be used to produce a shaft having several diameter changes. This equipment is also in use in Chicago.

Alaska, with about 74% of the US continental shelf, is largely unexplored for placers in its vast shallow marine waters. Nevertheless, there are numerous occurrences of marine minerals including gold, platinum, and cassiterite. Offshore dredging has recently begun in the Nome area. State and Federal agencies are preparing additional acreage for leasing. With 76,200 km (47,300 miles) or 54% of the US coastline, Alaska is a vast, largely unexplored frontier for shallow-water marine placers. Despite the general lack of mapping and only sporadic past prospecting, many prospects are known and a major mining operation for gold has recently begun offshore of Nome. Due largely to the demonstrated success of the Nome operation, the US Minerals Management Service is preparing to conduct a lease sale of additional acreage further offshore from Nome. And future sales are being considered elsewhere by both the Federal and state leasing agencies.

The World Commission on Economic Development WCED has defined sustainable development as the concept that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs". The concept requires the integration of economic, environmental and social considerations into all decision making, fostering intra-generational equity through the alleviation of poverty by concentrating the benefits of development in lesser developed areas; and considering the needs of future generations to ensure that inter-generation equity exists. This paper is devoted to give a review of the current status quo of the discussion. It describes the achievements of the mineral industries on their progress towards sustainable development since the Milos Conference (SDIMI 2003), but also discusses future challenges and obstacles."

Imported products and materials have been in the news over the last several years in a wide variety of industries. Certainly the mining and industrial minerals industry has not been exempt from this. Cement imports have received considerable attention in the press and a number of written articles. We are also seeing imported aggregates particularly along the gulf coast and east coast of the United states. We are now hearing increasing talk of bringing high brightness calcium carbonate from offshore sources into the U.s. domestic markets. This paper takes a look at the location of these sources, factors affecting their acceptance by U.S. industry and presents a general cost comparison of offshore and domestic calcium carbonate. In addition, the market response of U.S. suppliers and the impact of imports is also discussed.

INTRODUCTION Controlled blasting is used at some time during most civil engineering projects where there is rock excavation. Controlled blasting is often necessary because the blasting must take place in the near proximity of adjacent structures. In other instances, the blasting is controlled because a smooth perimeter is desired to minimize rock support and overbreak. The construction of tunnels and shafts for subways, rock excavations for foundations and the excavation of road cuts for interstate highways, sometimes require blasting operations which must be conducted in an urban environment. Unfortunately, blasting operations produce unwanted sounds and vibration along with their beneficial effects. Thus, in the writing of specifications for blasting in an urban environment, potential damage to adjacent structures by ground vibrations must be considered, possible damage to windows from airblasts must be considered, potential damage from fly rock must be considered, and the discomfort to people from ground vibrations, airblast, and noise must be taken into account. The contractor or the owner's engineer is faced with determining the maximum weight of explosives which may be detonated without damage to structures on adjacent property. If the weight of explosive is overestimated, the resulting damage to adjacent structures may result in costly losses. But, if the engineer or contractor is too conservative, and the weight of explosive becomes too restrictive, progress of the project may be curtailed and the cost of excavation will increase accordingly. "Genoa is a very distinctive city located between mountains and the sea and infrastructural upgrading works often have to deal with the intersection of existing infrastructures. This is the case for the new railway tunnel construction between the stations of Brignole and Principe which under-cross two existing double-track tunnels in operation. The latter have been constructed with masonry bricks and the vertical distance between old and new tunnels is approximately 1m. Due to rock characteristics and the urban environment, stability and vibrations control are the main issues. Consolidation work with the fore-poling method and a specific sequence of excavation, primary lining and final lining support have been designed to assure stability and settlement control. A hard rock road-header has been used to assure vibration control. Finally, a real time monitoring has been implemented. The article presents monitoring and back-analysis results of the under-crossing of the existing tunnels. GENERAL LAYOUT OF WORKS The Genoa railway junction constitutes an integral part of the Ventimiglia-Genoa-Novara-Milan railway line route and it is included amongst the railway systems of the Tyrrhenian-Northern European multi-modal corridor (corridor of the two seas or corridor VII Genoa-Rotterdam). The main aims of the project concern the upgrading of the existing lines and the separation of the long-distance passenger and freight traffic flows from those of a regional and metropolitan type. The project includes: •,Completion of the connection with the port of Genoa Voltri and the Italy-France coastal route. •,Interconnection with the future Terzo Valico dei Giovi mountain pass route towards Milan. •,Upgrading of the Genoa Voltri – Genoa Brignole main line to four/six tracks. Rearrangement of the systems at the Genoa Voltri, Genoa Sampierdarena and Genoa Brignole Stations, reorganisation of the services in the Genoa Terralba area and interchangeability with the metropolitan system complete the design activities. The contract which includes civil and technology works is divided into four construction lots (ref. Figure 1):"

Many reports have been written about the issues surrounding small scale miners’ challenges in Namibia; yet little has been done to address these challenges. There has been a fragmented approach to address these challenges. Various government arms and donor organizations have utilized piece meal methods in the past in trying to make improvements on the productivities across the sector, but with no meaningful success. This has led to the design and implementation of inappropriate technologies and support services for the sector. The structures of many of the semi-precious stones mining businesses are informal, with very little royalties received by the government. Miners often work informally or illegally and they fear government interference and they distrust outsiders, resulting in them withholding production information. The presence of small scale miners is quite often associated with major challenges, including poor safety and environmental management standards, the spread of communicable diseases and poor working conditions. The majority of the miners employ uncontrolled extraction techniques which damage the crystals and mineral specimens, resulting in intermediate and final products of low quality along with high wastage at the extraction stage. The vision of the Namibian government is to expand the range and value of semi-precious stones and jewelry products processed within Namibia, while curbing illicit flows of raw stones. This will simultaneously secure maximum benefit for the country. This study investigated the interventions aimed at making the small scale mining sector in Namibia sustainable. A baseline study was conducted to analyze the current situation and characterize the industry, including a SWOT analysis. Information was collected through questionnaires, interviews, consultative meetings, field visits and workshops in order to profile the sector. The baseline study results were used in developing interventions for improving artisanal and small scale mining operations. The main challenges for the Namibian semi-precious sector were identified as: factual information about raw material resources and its beneficiation are insufficient or not available, lack of skills, lack of education and access to finances, rudimentary exploration and mining practices, trading and logistics that are not functioning effectively and inadequate sector governance. One key finding of this study was that Namibia is not benefiting through value addition due partly to illicit flows of the uncut stones and to the fact that lapidary is not much pronounced to a greater extent. The following strategic interventions were identified as key in ensuring the sustainability of the small mining sector in Namibia: conducting geological assessment to identify new deposits and quantify the existing ones, improving exploration and mining practices, investing in education and training, creating an enabling environment and improving the sector governance and strengthening the sector organization and supporting the infrastructure.

INTRODUCTION It is a generally recognized obligation of owners and operators of underground mines in the United States to protect the health of miners against the potential carcinogenic effect of airborne alphaemitting radionuclides, in particular the shortlived radioactive daughter-products of 222Rn. In meeting this obligation, a number of strategies are available, and it is largely up to the operator to decide what combination of methods he will use. Because the officially accepted theory of the mechanism by which radon and its short-lived progeny cause cancer of the respiratory system, the objective in controlling this health hazard is to limit as far as possible the inhalation of the three daughter products, 218Po, 214Pb, and 214Bi. (214Po, the fourth nuclide in the chain, is so short-lived that its alpha-decay occurs almost instantaneously after the beta-decay of its parent, 214Bi.) The reasoning in this theory leads to the conclusion that the alphadecay of radon itself causes essentially negligible physiological damage, and that the amount of daughter product activity attributable to decay of radon within the respiratory system is also very small. As every ventilation engineer in this business knows, however, focusing remedial actions exclusively on the daughter products themselves is choosing the hard way, and will probably never lead to effective control of this health hazard in underground mining activities. The reason for this troublesome fact can be seen in Figure 1. Let us say that we have air containing 222Rn and its short-lived daughters in near-equilibrium, a not-uncommon condition in the air of a poorly ventilated underground mine, and that we wish to purify it by removing only the toxic daughter products. If we have been very thorough in our purification efforts, we might expect to achieve a 99% reduction of the Working Level (WL) measurement. Figure 2 allows us to examine closely the early regrowth of WL's in this freshly cleaned air. Within the first five minutes, for instance, the WL's are back to 10% of their full equilibrium value, and ten minutes later the level has more than doubled and is on its way to an almost complete defeat of the clean-up effort by the end of the next hour. It is quite clear from this simple illustration that no matter how effective an air-cleaning system may be if it is directed only at the selective removal of the toxic trio, 218Po, 214Pb and 214Bi, its beneficial effect will be quite temporary. A truly effective attack on the problem must always include methods aimed at the control of the unruly parent, radon. Then, even if its progeny have an inalienable "right to life", their brief lives will not be spent in the miners' lungs.
