Spherical or oil agglomeration has been recognised for many years as a possible process for the recovery of mineraVmetal values. BP has investigated the potential of spherical agglomeration for a number of minerals as have other workers. Testwork has also been carried out by both BP and others on the selective agglomeration of fine coal. The spherical agglomeration of both minerals and coal depends on the use of an immiscible liquid e.g. a hydrocarbon which is added to a suspension of the solids in water. On agitation the oil is distributed over oleophilic/hydrophobic surfaces and particle impact allows inter-particle liquid bridges to form causing agglomeration. It is also possible to enhance the oleophilicity of the material to be recovered by the use of collectors similar to those used in froth flotation.

Diffusion is known to be the main transport mechanism of contaminants in fine-gained soils. To date, it is still common practice to estimate contaminant migration in the Bangkok Clay by means of pure advection models. A series of experiments with various chemical species was performed to determine transport parameters such as the diffusion coefficients and the distribution coefficients. The soil used was saturated undisturbed Soft Bangkok Clay. Column experiments were utilized in a number of laboratory tests involving advective-diffusive migration. Effective diffusion coefficients of different ions were back calculated from the test results. The distribution coefficients were determined from the results of the column tests and batch test. The results indicate that the evaluated parameters are in the range of values obtained from other researchers on similar kinds of soil. Based on this results contaminant migration by diffusion in the Soft Bangkok Clay can now be performed.

Few if any mines in North America have used exhaust air to remove heat at temperatures above the stope reject temperature. In contrast, the South African mining industry has long taken advantage of this heat removal method. The Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, has reached the point where a large air-conditioning upgrade is needed. Since existing air and water resources are being utilized about as well as practically possible, it was recently decided to install an 8.1 MW(R) (2300 ton) plant in the deepest mining division. Two horizontal bulk air spray coolers will distribute the coo1th to active workings via controlled recirculation. The heat will be rejected to exhaust air in four parallel cooling towers. The number and size of these large direct-contact heat exchangers prompted an investigation into South African planning techniques.

This paper is based on two recently (2002) published reports: - "Breaking New Ground". Final report on the Mining, Minerals, and Sustainable Development Project (MMSD). - "2002 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines". Published by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The GRI guidelines can be applied in all kinds of industries and other organizations, whereas the MMSD project report is sector specific. However, both reports center on the three pillars of sustainability. The performance indicators as they are presented in the GRI guidelines have been assessed and compared with the sector specific arguments in the MMSD report. Based on this evaluation, the paper points at some indicators that may be useful in the start-up phase of sustainability reporting, seen from the perspective of the aggregate industry in an industrialized North European country with increasing environmental awareness and pressure on natural resources.

INTRODUCTION Construction is underway on a laboratory cavern 713 m below surface at the Soudan Mine, Tower-Soudan State Park, in northeastern Minnesota. The 13.9 in wide by 11.6 m high by 71.8 in long cavern will provide a laboratory space for basic research in physics, in which experiments can be conducted with greatly reduced interference from cosmic radiation. A first generation experiment, called the Soudan 1 detector, is currently operating in a converted drift 591 in below surface at the mine. The initial phase of the Soudan 2 detector will be an 1100-metric ton unit, which will occupy approximately a 19 m length of the cavern. Control and monitoring equipment will be in a prefabricated shop office enclosure erected in the cavern. The location and planned usage for the laboratory cavern present special excavation, lining, and outfitting requirements. Temperature and humidity control, a relatively clean dust-free environment, and a long service life are required. Low cost and risk to the owner were basic requirements due to the nature of the funding. The most common type of site selected to meet these two constraints is either an operational mine or a civil works facility such as a road tunnel. There are often serious problems for such laboratories because of ongoing operations such as blasting, hauling, etc. Most of these problems do not exist for the Soudan 2 laboratory because the mine is used as a historical site with regular tours only in the summer season. 1. INTRODUCTION The economic importance of bringing a new mine to production in the shortest possible time, is well known. In recent years the rate of escalation of mining costs has accelerated more rapidly than at any time in the past. This fact has enhanced the need to reduce time schedules and made it an overriding and predominant objective when planning new shafts. The squeezed profit margins and widely fluctuating metal prices have also increased the emphasis being placed on this aspect. Moreover the increase in the present value of future profits due to the reduction in the time element, can be so substantial that expenditure on equipment and additional labour can be justified conditional on sufficient gain in shaft sinking speed being achieved. The emphasis on time saving becomes more abundantly clear when considering the very large increase in the capital required to bring a modern underground mine to production. As an example, the initial capital expenditure requirements for a large new gold mine in the Western Transvaal, which has commenced production recently, is estimated at R200M, and a major extension to another deep level mine in the same area is estimated at R300M. With the uncertainty of future metal prices and the recent trends in increasing inflation, it is becoming more difficult than ever to estimate the profitability of proposed mining projects and any cost saving due to more rapid sinking of shafts can only assist in this respect. Since the shaft systems are frequently the most expensive set of underground excavations and no other underground work can commence until they are completed, the speed of shaft sinking is subject to closer scrutiny than in the past. In the following sections of this paper the factors contributing to the high average advance rates achieved by South African shaft sinkers are discussed. It is difficult, if not impossible, to estimate the effect of any single factor, in isolation, on the overall sinking achievements. However, the cumulative effect of improvements made in the inter-related activities is, probably, the most important contributor. Although there has not been any single major technical change or innovation to shaft sinking practices in the last decade, the average sinking speeds have increased, due to improved application and technical improvements in established procedures. 2. GENERAL When discussing South African shaft sinking techniques and average sinking rates compared to those achieved in other parts of the world, it should be remembered that the size and depth of South African shafts are often considerably greater than in most other countries. During the last decade grassroots minerals education programs have blossomed throughout the United States and in other countries. At the same time an environmental education movement has been gaining momentum. While this offers a unique opportunity to share the mining industry’s story, it also has some potential pitfalls. In this paper the authors will discuss some of the benefits of participating in environmental education and provide some practical tips for success, based on New Mexico experiences. It will conclude with a presentation on a successful environmental education program at Heights Middle School in Farmington New Mexico.

The debut of the sustainable development concept in the political arena, and the publication of Our Common Future in 1987, represents the starting point of present concerns and efforts associated with the sustainability of the ecosphere and its ecological and human subsystems. The sustainable production and consumption of natural resources, in particular mineral resources, represents a central aspect of the problem. In this context, an important goal has been to develop sophisticated management systems, which consider sustainability principles, in organizations within the system of minerals and metals (SMM). The development of indicators is only part of this challenge. The extractive industries (EI) as an important stakeholder of the SMM (should) have similar priorities. If embraced, this challenge offers great opportunities, one of them being the potential for advancing the understanding of how these organizations learn and change. The identification of its main determinants offers, in theory, the possibility for their management and a faster achievement of the sustainability levels to which they (should) aspire.

Large scale copper heap leaching in Chile began in November 1980 when the Lo Aguirre heap leach project was put into operation. At almost the same time, El Indio gold mine began production. While El Indio was not a heap leach project, it was Chile's first major bulk tonnage, open-pit gold deposit. This paved the way for the introduction of North American gold heap leach technology in the early 1980s. Heap leaching has become more popular in Chile during the past five years because it allows the exploitation of large but relatively low grade ore bodies at a reasonable cost. Pioneering research in hydrometallurgy carried out at some Chilean universities and at the Centro de Investigaciones Minero Metalurgicas (CIMM) played an important role. There are more than 10 large copper heap leach and solvent extraction/ electrowinning (SX/EW) process plants in different stages of development in Chile. Total production from these facilities will eventually increase Chile's present copper exports about 50%.

Upgrading molybdenite ore can be technically difficult and expensive if talc is a major impurity in the ore. The layered structure of molybdenite and talc decreases the surface specificity of floatation and suppression agents, thereby making molybdenite ore beneficiation inefficient if under some wet processing methods. However, oxidic talc surfaces may be distinct from the sulfidic or oxysulfidic molybdenite surfaces, such distinction related to electron work functions and/or densities of electron donors/acceptors sites. If such differences are present, the upgrading of finely sized molybdenite ore by dry triboelectrostatic methods may hold advantages over traditional wet methods. We report on the upgrading of molybdenite ore using a laboratory-scale, drytriboelectrostatic beneficiation system. This system employs pneumatic transport conditions to tribocharge, beneficiate and collect the fine molybdenite ore particles. Using this system, two Mo ores were beneficiated under dry conditions without the addition of water or surface modifiers and additives. Beneficiation performance was dependent on the particle size of the feed ore. The surface and particulate morphology and elemental concentrations in the parent feeds and the beneficiated products were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy. These data, in conjunction with a complete recovery analysis, define some potential advantages of dry, triboelectrostatic beneficiation processing and provide insight into factors controlling molybdenite ore upgrading.

The purpose of grouting is to modify the permeability and strength characteristics of the subsoil in such a way that the planned structure can be efficiently constructed at a given location. This technique, which originally underwent considerable development in the field of dams construction is constantly evolving and it becomes more and more important in urban zones of intensive underground development for projects such as transport tunnels, stations, car parks, ect. Grouting becomes more and more indispensable whatever the natural characteristics of that subsoil ; such is the case particularly when the planned work runs through cohesionless granular soils, usually water-bearing such as alluvium, sands, disturbed ground, fill material, etc. The selection of the grouting method and the extent of treatment required at depends on two fundamental factors. 1º) nature and behaviour of subsoil to be treated. There is no need to stress the necessary of a good knowledge of geotechnical, hydrological and chemical characteristics of the ground to be treated. At the present time the specialists in these fields have available numerous methods of analysis, either laboratory or field tests, which enable to evolve a suitable treatment.

Seismic exploration techniques offer the engineer and geologist a way of obtaining detailed information on the physical parameters and geometry of the rocks where extensive underground excavation or tunneling is proposed. Use of the seismic method can provide a greater amount of detailed information at relatively less cost than can be obtained by any other known subsurface exploration method. Boreholes are still required for calibration of the seismic data but at a much wider geographic spacing than otherwise would be needed for subsurface mapping. The seismic data can define with precision the actual location of zones of flexure or fracture of the rocks and reveal the configuration of the surface of the rock layers. ENGINEERING PROBLEMS One of the major requirements in the planning of subsurface installations is that of locating tunnels and other underground openings in favorable rock units. Such rock units should exhibit uniformity of composition, both vertically and horizontally, to minimize variation in excavation techniques. The depth and thickness of the unit must be known: a 30-foot diameter tunnel cannot be contained in a 25-foot thick limestone. The rock unit needs to be as free as possible from structural defects and should be suited to efficient excavation procedures. If liquid conduits are planned, the slope of the rock unit needs to be known so that maximum advantage can be taken of gravity flow with the tunnels wholly contained within the unit.

Ever since A Decade of Digital Computing in the Minerals Industry was published in 1969, mining men have expressed the need for an additional reference on computer methods. It was felt such a volume should spell out the "how to" of computer applications in the solution of their problems. Computers in the minerals industry will be 20 years old when the 1979 SME Fall Meeting and the 16th International Symposium on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry (APCOM) take place jointly in Tucson, AZ. On such an occasion it was thought appropriate to publish an anniversary volume which reviewed current practices and projected what might prevail as computer methods for the future. Thus was born the idea to publish Computer Methods for the 80's. The first planning meeting for this volume took place in Las Vegas, NV, during the 1976 annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers. It quickly became evident that no single computer method existed to solve most mining problems; rather, mining computer methods are generally tailored to fit unique geologic, mining, and organizational conditions. Hence a format which included both the theory and practice for each of the computer applications was adopted for this volume.

INTRODUCTION The measurement of displacements in soil or rock in the vicinity of underground openings provide valuable information for a better understanding of the behaviour of the structure. On the basis of systematic observations conclusions can be drawn concerning - safety of the opening in the various stages of excavation - effectiveness of the support measures - nature of the rock pressure to be expected - influence of the construction of the opening on neighbouring structures (settlements of foundations, underpassing other tunnels etc.) - comparison of theoretical predictions with the actual structural behaviour (1). Today there are several types of suitable instruments available that can be employed at reasonable costs for such investigations (2). The most important ones are the multiple point borehole extensometer, the inclinometer and the multiple point borehole deflectometer. As is well-known, the extensometer only measures the displacement component in the borehole axis, while the inclinometer and the deflectometer provide monitoring of rock mass movements normal to the borehole axis. In the following a new instrument is described, which has been given the name Extenso-Deflectometer ISETH. In this single piece of equipment certain features of the above-mentioned three types of borehole instruments are incorporated. it enables the measurement of all three components of the displacement vector at consecutive points along the borehole, the axis of which may have any direction in space. Following the conceptual idea of a Continuous Elution Process early in 1982, the system was successfully pilot plant tested at Western Mining's Kambalda gold plant in December 1982. As a consequence of these tests the Ok Tedi elution ciruit design was changed from batch operation to continuous operation resulting in a reduction in the number of similarly sized elution columns from five operating with one standby to one operating with one standby and halving the process steam requirements. In addition to providing significant capital and operating cost savings the continuous process was simpler to operate than the batch process.

The use of froth flotation as a means of separating and upgrading sulfide mineral concentrates is standard industrial practice throughout the world. Froth flotation is also widely recognized to be a very complex system having highly interactive and often self-compensating factors at work. Several summary articles have been recently published which discuss at length some of the important practical aspects of optimizing the use of existing commercial flotation reagents. Klimpel (1987). Klimpel and Hansen (1987a), Klimpel and Hansen (1987b), and Klimpel (1988). It is apparent from monitoring the industrial practice of sulfide mineral flotation over the last decade that considerable progress has been made in optimizing the operating aspects of flotation. For example, the availability of improved instrumentation and related computer devices, modified mechanical flotation cell designs, better reagent dosage control leading to less reagent usage per ton of ore, blending of feed ores, more attention to coarse and fine particle flotations, etc., are all examples of this progress.

This paper presents a strategy for addressing the hazards of construction of tunnels in ground containing methane. A discussion of the nature of methane includes occurrence underground, and manner of entry into excavations. Means of methane control for underground operations are discussed, including ventilation, monitoring, equipment selection, and personnel training. Principles of ventilation for gas dispersion and removal are addressed. The use of continuous gas monitors, automatic power shutdown systems, and hand-held detectors is discussed. The paper addresses integration of permissible equipment to provide a safe system. Aspects of personnel training are discussed, including maintaining hazard awareness, and evacuation and re-entry procedures.

For many major mining projects the time frame from initial planning to production can be measured in terms of decades. Hecla's Silver Shaft project, which is scheduled to go into production by the end of this year and includes a complete surface facility, shaft with an ultimate depth of 2,348 meters (7,700 feet), complete ore pass and loading pocket system, and 610 meters (2,000 feet) of development drifting and stope preparation, was initially concieved in the Fall of 1979. This duration of a mere four years from conceptual engineering to production is a testimonial to what can be accomplished when a progressive mining company and an innovative contractor work together as a team rather than developing into two warring camps as often happens.
