This paper describes the results of an investigation done to determine thermal properties and heat emission of coal measure rocks in Karadon district of Zonguldak Coal Colliery. In Karadon District, depth of working level is about -600 m where the heat problem arises. In the near future, workings will be at deeper levels and working conditions will be more difficult due to high heat emission. At the beginning of the paper the importance of wall rock heat emission in underground mine have been explained and then the amount of heat emission to the ventilating air has been calculated. It has been found out that the strata is the main source of heat in the mine. Therefore, geothermal gradient of the region has also been determined simply by measuring the virgin rock temperatures in different levels of the mine. All other data directly related with heat emission from different sources has been collected and has been analyzed by using a special computer package. As a conclusion, total heat and moisture content in ventilating air and heat balance has been determined for Karadon Coal Mine. In addition, some recommendations and suggestions have been made for the future works when the mine workings go to the deeper levels.

For 30 years, mining operations worldwide have used diesel-powered mobile machinery to mechanize the mining process. South African diamond mines and some US coal mines have 15 years of experience with this type of equipment. During the past eight years, most of the new gold production from underground mines outside of South Africa has been mined by bulk methods using diesel-powered machinery. The underground mining industry, then, has secured and institutionalized the larger benefits created by a technology that was new to mining engineers in the early 1960s. The state of mechanized diesel-powered underground mining is now mature. To survive, though, mine operators -regardless of commodity mined and position in the commodity cycle-must maximize the benefits of diesel technology. The benefits gained in the next seven to 10 years will be realized by tweaking this component, fine tuning that piece of machinery and demanding optimum use of the technology. Manufacturers of diesel-powered machinery share the condition of maturity with their customers. Larger scale and easy market development have occurred. Much has been made of the potential size of the US coal segment as well as markets in China and the Confederation of Independent States (CIS). Indeed, opportunities do exist in these regions. However, these market development opportunities do not imply the market size trend line remains unchanged. They simply mean the potential market size is within reach. In fact, the market size for the product is shrinking.

The primary purpose of this paper is to review the fire and explosion hazards associated with hydrocarbons heavier than methane. Methane is the classical hydrocarbon encountered in mines whose presence is generally due to bacterial decomposition of organic debris. The higher hydrocarbons are more likely to be found during tunneling when petroleum products either natural or man made are encountered. Fires may be defined as rapid gas phase oxidations accompanied by the rapid evolution of light and heat. Explosions may be defined as uncontrolled fires. The rapidly expanding gases resulting from combustion exceed the speed of sound and generate percussive forces. The essential elements for a fire or explosion are shown on Figure 12: (1) a gas phase explosive mixture and (2) an ignition source. The paper will attempt to review various aspects relative to the explosive mixture; The concentration and composition; Techniques for detection; Techniques for ventilation to reduce concentration below explosive limits. The ignition sources are also listed on Figure 12. An arc originates from an electrical source such as electrical switches, relays and motor brushes. Static electricity can also be an arc source and may be generated by air flowing through rubber bases or a rapidly moving endless belt. A spark is generally associated with abrasion of iron metal. Hectorite is a rare magnesium-lithium clay mineral that occurs at many places in the McDermitt caldera of Nevada-Oregon. Commercial development of several high purity deposits began in 1986. The hectorite that was precipitated in a lake environment formed after the collapse of the McDermitt caldera. Hectorite beds and lenses are associated with volcanic sediments, limestones, dolomites, zeolites and locally sandy bentonites. The high purity deposits appear to be associated with hydrothermal areas. The hectorite consists of extremely small, flake-shaped crystals. Calcium (Ca) is the predominant exchangeable ion. Its color ranges from white to light green. Commercial uses include high-brightness, magnesium-aluminum-silicate (MAS) products, organophilic clays, pulp retention and ceramics. The MAS is used as a suspending agent, binder, stabilizer and thixotrope in aqueous solutions for cosmetics, household cleaners, pharmaceuticals and miscellaneous industrial applications. Hectorite-based organophilic clays are used in printing inks and paints. The McDermitt caldera complex is located astride the Nevada-Oregon boundary west of the town of McDermitt, NV (Fig. 1). The structural complex is elliptical in shape, extending about 43 km (27 miles) north-south and 34 km (21 miles) east-west. This area was the site of extensive volcanism during the Miocene (24 to 18 million years). The complex consists of five overlapping calderas with the oldest at the south end of the complex (Rytuba et al., 1979). Each of the vent areas collapsed and is marked by a ring fracture zone. The ring fractures around the outer boundary of the caldera complex are shown in [Fig.1].

A geothermal company and an oil company need the same type of people to do the same kind of work. In the geothermal industry, geologists and geophysicists define prospects through surface geology, analysis of surface seeps, magnetics, gravity, and resistivity surveys - techniques similar to those used in the petroleum industry. In addition, shallow (250-ft) temperature gradient holes often are used in geothermal operations. Landmen take geothermal leases that are patterned after oil and gas leases. Exploratory drilling is done with the same drilling contractors and same drilling rigs, with minor modification. Drilling foremen and drilling engineers share the same objective of making the most hole, in the shortest time, at the least cost, with a proper completion. Petroleum engineers test the wells, design the completions, determine the reserves, make economic calculations, work with the tax assessor, and manage the reservoirs. Production engineers build roads, locations and pipelines, install gas/liquid separators and meters, and operate production and injection facilities. A contract to sell steam to a public utility is required. Various governmental regulations, permits, environmental concerns, and public affairs pose similar problems in both industries. Also required of both are top management people who are acquainted with geologic risk, prepared to accept million dollar dry holes, willing to bid competitively at lease sales, and able to invest large sums based on a technology not yet fully proven. Successful geothermal development requires in-depth financial ability similar to that required for petroleum development. Unlike previous gold mining booms in Nevada's Great Basin, the current boom includes a serious commitment to mine reclamation. Many of the smaller mines began reclaiming in the late 1980s but met with limited success due in part to poor soil characteristics. Public land managers and the mining industry began looking for ways to improve reclamation success. One promising technique is suggested by an ongoing research project using sludge biosolids, the solid residue of municipal waste water treatment. During the 1980s, limited space in landfills led municipal governments to search for alternate ways to dispose of their biosolids. The cities of Reno and Sparks, NR and the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) searched for ways to combine these needs to everyone's mutual benefit. Yet barriers remained. The federal government had major concerns about potential bioaccumulation of metals and contamination of drinking water from the land application of municipal biosolids. The barriers were lifted late in 1991 when an interagency task force led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a new federal policy on the use of biosolids on federal land. The policy encouraged biosolids as a soil amendment to reclaim degraded minelands and invited federal agencies to develop biosolid pilot projects. In response, BLM enlisted the help of American Resources Corp. (ARC) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for a pilot study at ARC'S' Butcher Boy Mine near Wadsworth, NR. Although biosolids have been used in mine land reclamation in the eastern United States for 20 years, before this pilot study, none had been used on public lands in the arid Great Basin. Land application of biosolids improves soil conditions by improving nutrient uptake, increasing water retention, permitting easier root penetration and enhancing soil fertility. Biosolids increase ecosystem productivity and can lead to significant improvements in the structure and diversity of plant and animal communities. Thus, land application of biosolids promotes biodiversity.

The base of the stone quarry still stands today, as imposing as any Mavan temple or Egyptian pyramid. For 80 years it has been a reminder to those who must sweat to earn a wage. There are no plaques to indicate its impressive history. Rather, it stands as a towering monument to the masons and stone cutters who built it-a testimony in stone to that most demanding and back-breaking of industries. Take your imagination back to the limestone quarries at Split Rock, near Syracuse, NY. The sound of an occasional steam drill and the mighty roar of a dynamite explosion herald progress. The ring and crash of a hundred sledge hammers are music in the calloused hands of the quarry men. It is a symphony of man against nature. Hundreds of sweat-soaked men break up the blue Onondaga limestone for the "sodi ash," the popular name for the quarry owner, the Solvay Process Co. Nearby, expert stone masons fit mammoth 454-kg (1,000-1b) blocks of cut stone into place, building the foundation for what may have been, back in 1902, the world's largest stone crusher. Consider for a moment, a modern stone quarry. The business is now essentially one of machine against nature. The shovels, drills, conveyors, and locomotives help make the quarry of today a profitable venture. Now consider the quarry of the early 20th Century. Anyway you look at it, a tougher, more demanding life would be difficult to imagine-12 hours a day, all kinds of weather, breaking up tons of rock that had been drilled, blasted, or pounded from the bowels of an uncooperative earth. Before proceeding, it might be prudent to briefly describe the history of the Split Rock quarries. Before the purchase of the quarry lands by the fledgling Solvay Process Co. in 1889, the quarries already had a reputation literally chiseled in stone. Most of the municipal buildings in Syracuse were made of it, as well as over half of the Erie Canal, including the engineering marvel of the time, the Montezuma Aqueduct. Introduction The choice of using a dump or heap leaching process or a fine grinding-agitation leaching process is based on the grade and tonnage of the ore body. Low grade ore and small tonnages are best treated by a low-cost method, such as dump or heap leaching. Permeability, however, is the critical factor in a successful leaching operation, regardless of tonnage or grade. Without permeability in the leach bed, no percolation, no dissolution, no extraction, and no success are possible. Solution delivery to the ore is also essential. Solute-to-mineral contact is a requisite. The solute must be effectively strong and not be depleted in active dissolvers, such as acid, ferric iron, cyanide, and oxygen. It must also be moving across the mineral to be dissolved. No pockets of stagnant solution can be allowed. A third factor is recovery of the now-dissolved metal in the pregnant liquor. All such liquor should be gathered at a reasonable metal concentration to make further pumping and processing worthwhile. Control and recovery of pregnant solutions are probably the most ignored factors of solution mining. This stage in recovery is historically where many operations either fail or become viable. Permeability A permeable heap is normally achieved by taking into account heap building/construction and agglomeration/pelletizing. Even though heap building is critical for good permeability, it will not be discussed here. It has been described in detail by others. Instead, this analysis will concentrate on agglomeration and pelletizing. Differences between agglomeration and pelletizing are emphasized. Agglomeration is referred to when small particles are being attached to larger particles -the ore presents a complete size distribution. On the other hand, pelletizing is a process where all particles are fine (less than 850)µm or 20 mesh), as with mill tailings. The difference is important from two points of view: • Mechanical devices used to achieve the desired attaching action; and • Binder dosages. Mechanical Devices Due to the absence of large particles that fines can become attached to, pelletizing should be done in a centrifugal-action-based device, such as an inclined rotating plate, a rotary drum, or a series of belt-transfer points. In agglomeration, large particles play a part as a natural nucleus for the attaching action of fines. Hence, a tumbling action as strong as for pelletizing is not required. Common methods to accomplish agglomeration include: • Cascade belt system with either all belts moving forward or some of them moving forward and at least one moving backward; • Combination of belt plus inclined vibrating chute; • Large concrete mixer drum; and • Belt discharging directly onto stockpiled ore. The proper agglomeration system will depend basically on the size distribution of the ore and the amount and type of clays present. In all of the agglomerating systems described, the tumbling action takes place at the transfer points either from belt to belt, or from belt to inclined chute ore belt to ore pile. Usually, two or three mixing bars at each transfer point are also included to help the mixing action. Plows to move the ore around on a moving belt are also used.

The subsidence and deformation characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata is quite different from that with consolidated overlying strata. In this paper, based on the engineering background of large mining height mining in No.21 coal seam of Zhaogu No.2 Coal Mine in Henan Province, China, the PFC 2D numerical simulation and surface subsidence field observation was conducted to study the subsidence characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata (680m). Numerical model with dimensions of 2000m 750m was established and mining process with different working face lengths (150 m,200 m,250 m,300 m) and different working face advancing distances (40 m,80 m,120 m,160 m,200 m,240 m,280 m,320 m,360 m,400 m,440 m,480 m) were simulated. The surface subsidence characteristics and displacement field variation of rock strata under different working face advancing distances were observed and analyzed. The results show that with the advance of working face, the structure of subsidence-like basin will be formed in each rock stratum, and the influence range of mining on rock stratum is “bowl-shaped”, and the influence increases with the increase of advancing distance. The unconsolidated layer has a buffer effect on the mining-induced subsidence, and the buffer effect is realized by the expansion of the subsidence area. The movement law of strata under different working face lengths is similar to that under general mining, and the structure of subsidence-like basins will also be formed in each stratum. The influence range of strata after mining is ' bowl-shaped ', and the influence extent increases with the increasing of working face length; the internal subsidence of the unconsolidated layer is more intense and complex than that of the rock layer; the surface subsidence movement shows an obvious 'basin' phenomenon. The field observation data of surface subsidence also confirm the above results.

"Slope failures that occurred in 2008 and 2009 at the Pikeview Quarry in El Paso County, Colorado, USA were investigated using three-dimensional discrete element modeling methods. Large scale block sliding failures occurred along weak bedding planes that dip steeply into an excavation located at the toe of the slope. Several mining sequences at the toe of the slope were simulated to evaluate the effects of various degrees of extraction and backfill on slope stability. Slope stability back analysis was conducted using pre-failure and post-failure conditions to determine the joint shear strength properties. Laboratory testing was also conducted to determine intact rock properties. Three-dimensional discrete element analysis was uniquely applicable to this evaluation because it allowed representation of shear stress of the basal sliding surface and it afforded evaluation of several scenarios of extraction and backfill at the toe of the slope. INTRODUCTION The Pikeview Quarry is an aggregate quarry located approximately five miles northwest of Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado, USA. The quarry has been operated by several owners since the early 1900s. The Pikeview Quarry has been a major source of construction aggregate for the Colorado Springs area for many years (MSHA 1986). In the 1950s, the site was mined by Peter Kiewit and Sons to provide limestone for the construction of the nearby Air Force Academy. A large scale slope failure occurred on December 2, 2008, which stopped mining activity at the Pikeview Quarry. A second, related slope failure occurred on September 13, 2009. The second slope failure was located immediately adjacent to the initial December 2008 failure. The objective of this publication is to discuss the three-dimensional slope stability evaluation. The causal relationships of slope instability are not within the scope of this publication. However, omitting the precursors to slope failure would limit understanding of the nature of the slope stability evaluation. The regional and local geology and the history of slope instability at the Pikeview Quarry aid in understanding these precursors. Two main failure mechanisms were hypothesized during the failure investigation to explain the triggering of the 2008 and 2009 large slope failures at the Pikeview Quarry. Both mechanisms are given equal credence in this publication. Quarry excavation was a key factor in the slope instability for both failure mechanisms. The objective of the three-dimensional model was to evaluate the effects of extraction and backfill at the toe of the slope with respect to slope stability. GEOLOGY Regional and local geology are both important factors in slope instability at the Pikeview Quarry. Geologic structure at the quarry is related to regional mountain building and basin development associated with the Laramide Orogeny and the Rocky Mountains. Lithologies at the Pikeview Quarry are also related to regional trends. Localized geologic features, primarily related to weathering and erosion, have also been major contributing factors to slope instability at the Pikeview Quarry."

The need for reliable and adaptable underground mine communications has become a focal point for both the safety and logistics of a mining operation. New mine communication technology aims to connect personnel, equipment, and data together while setting up a network that can be utilized during normal operations and also in an emergency event. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (also known as the MINER Act) requires mine operators to establish post-accident, two-way communication between underground and surface personnel and electronic tracking for all mine personnel. Communications systems must be designed such that they can survive major mine accidents, including explosions, fires, inundations and ground falls. Typical, wire-bound communication technologies are vulnerable because wires are often destroyed in such accidents. Wireless technologies that work well on the surface, such as cellular telephone networks; have limited applicability underground because the wireless signals do not propagate through rock.

Growing concerns of climate change and its potential association with the release of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere have prompted possible legislation which would require minimization of greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon dioxide and methane, both of which largely contribute to the greenhouse effect, have direct links to the fossil energy industry sector. Specifically, the combustion of one ton of coal produces between one and three tons of carbon dioxide, dependent upon the carbon content and heating value of the combusted coal. Additionally, coal mine methane (CMM) released through a mine?s ventilation system has a radiative trapping impact approximately 20 times greater than that of an equivalent mass of carbon dioxide. The capture of coalbed methane (CBM) prior to the mining process and its utilization as an alternative energy source provides the possibility of a decreased carbon footprint. Domestically, the past 25 years have seen a significant expansion of the CBM industry. Internationally, in developing countries such as China, the need for western coal degasification technology is growing. A collaborative, international effort will be required to initiate a recognizable decrease in global greenhouse gas emissions. This paper identifies the potential decrease in equivalent carbon dioxide emissions through effective degasification at a hypothetical longwall mine located in China. Advanced, three-dimensional gas reservoir simulation software will be utilized to determine the maximum feasible CBM recovery in a low permeability, high gas content reservoir prior to the mining process.

"A study was conducted on the N125 project in Seattle to investigate the use of apparent density as an assessment tool for the effectiveness of soil conditioning. The formation of an air bubble as well as the plugging of cutterhead and excavation chamber can be a result of improper soil conditioning. Both air bubble formation at the top of the excavation chamber and developing plugging issues can be identified by analyzing the apparent densities in the excavation chamber. In this study, apparent densities less than unity were observed in the upper portion of both northbound and southbound TBMs, suggesting the presence of an air bubble. Apparent densities greater than the in-situ soil density were observed in the lower portion of the excavation chamber. Particularly high values of apparent density were coincident with clogging observed at multiple locations along the alignment. The combination of less than unity upper chamber apparent density and very high apparent density in the lower portion of the chamber are related, and indicate the inability of the TBM to effectively condition and mix the soil in the chamber.INTRODUCTIONProper soil conditioning in EPB tunneling offers many advantages to the quality and productivity of the project. There are few operational parameters that can be used to assess the soil conditioning performance such as advance rate, torque, thrust, chamber pressure signature, etc. One of the other parameters that potentially can be used is the apparent density. The apparent density of the material in the chamber was introduced by Guglielmetti et al. (2003) as the vertical chamber pressure gradient calculated from the physical relation between the horizontally measured chamber pressures and the vertical distance between the pressure sensors. Guglielmetti et al. (2003) introduced apparent density as a measure to ensure the excavation chamber is filled with material. To guarantee face stability the authors suggest to keep the apparent density over a certain limit so the material is able to transfer effective stress to the virgin soil, and thus provide support of the excavation face. They implemented this method at the Metro project in Porto, Portugal.Comparing the vertical gradient of the horizontal chamber pressures to the densities of excavation chamber samples, Bezuijen et al. (2005) discovered that the gradient is not necessarily representative of the muck density. They assumed that the yield stress of the muck as well as the adhesion between the muck and the cutterhead and bulkhead material have an influence on the vertical gradient during mining (Bezuijen et al. 2005, Bezuijen & Talmon 2014)."

The Walworth Run stream was brick-culverted in the 1800s, converting it to a 16-ft diameter sewer. This Cuyahoga River tributary contributed to the infamous burning river that became the catalyst for USA’s environmental movement. The NEORSD has been working hard to reduce CSOs here, most recently by diverting Walworth Run’s 882 MGD of flow to the new Westerly Tunnel. This had to consider structure age/size, alluvial/glaciolacustrine deposits (requiring several ground support systems, groundwater control), and maintenance of massive flows. This paper examines challenges identified during design that supported the contractor in development of a risk-mitigating plan, culminating to successful implementation.

The LaModel program is widely used to calculate stresses and displacements on thin tabular deposits, particularly when multiple seams or complex mining geometry is encountered. The program itself allows the user to create multiple mining steps to show a progressive sequence of mining. However, LaModel considers each individual step as an independent steady-state condition, and any previous loading conditions of the materials are not tracked. It also does not consider any sort of dynamic stress change during the mining process. In certain circumstances, especially in multiple-seam situations, modeling a scenario of the seam of interest without considering the previous mining sequence in the off seams can potentially lead to inaccurate results. The primary objective of this paper is to present a situation where a potentially dynamic, unstable mining condition was encountered. It was not evident until the previous loading conditions in the off seams and the impact of dynamic stress changes in the active seam were considered. It is important to make the mining community aware of these potential modeling scenarios where the path-dependent nature of the mining sequence is of key importance. This paper presents a case history where room-and-pillar retreat mining was being conducted in a relatively deep cover stress regime where multiple seam interactions were present from both undermining and overmining. Mining in the active seam was being conducted with roomand- pillar mining techniques consisting of a series of parallel production panels being successively developed and retreat mined along a set of Mains. In this situation, the traditional global LaModel analysis without any path-dependent adjustments did not fully identify the area of poor conditions that were encountered. This paper explores the impacts of mining in the active seam on the lower seam which, in turn, has a negative impact on the active seam. This provided a solid foundation for the subsequent analysis of the three seams simultaneously. Based on the calibrated model, it is likely that retreat mining in the active seam resulted in increased stresses in the underlying seam that conceivably resulted in additional convergence and, most likely, additionally convergence of the pillars under the panel being developed. This in turn could have caused active subsid- The LaModel program is extremely useful for analyzing multiple-seam mining scenarios. As multiple-seam situations become even more prevalent, the potential for encountering a path-dependent mining scenario also increases. To successfully model path-dependent mining scenarios, the ground control engineer will be required to make sound judgments on the condition of pillars in sub-adjacent seams. These engineering judgments should be based not only on the current state of stress, but also on any prior or future states of stress. This means considering the stresses from over or undermining as well as stresses applied to the sub-adjacent seams from actively mining the seam of interest.

It was pilot tested repeatedly in 1985 at our pilot plant in Tombstone, Arizona, with different types of gold bearing mineralization. Both Pincock, Allen and Holt (USA), and PA Technology (Australia) were involved with some of these pilot tests. The ores tested included easily cyanide-extractable oxide type gold ore from Australia, marginal heap-leach type ore from Cripple Creek, USA, and a hematite bearing ore from California. In all cases, extraction time was 6 hours or less yielding 90-99% recoveries of assayed gold values. The HGP operates as a lixivient which parts the gold from the rock matrix, yielding gold in solution in a fully recoverable form. Both precipitation methods, such as zinc participation or Carbon in Leach systems ( or Carbon in Pulp) have been shown to be feasible with this technology for the recovery of gold from the pregnant solution. Both batch vat leaching as well as continuous processing are realistic for use with the HGP. It has also been considered that the HGP might also benefit heap leaching due to several advantageous factors over cyanide. One such consideration is that the HGP can operate effectively with acidic ore types. The use of cyanide with such ores often requires attention to pH and neutralization with lime. This tends to reduce and even clog the permeability of the leach bed.

A charge of the Research Council of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME) is to ?? identify longer term research ideas/needs, that in the perception of the SME Research Council, could represent significant technology breakthroughs ?? (SME, n.d.). In 2008, the Council decided that instead of unilaterally developing a list of top priorities, it would involve the entire membership of SME in identifying the top priorities. Additionally, it decided to keep the list short. This paper describes the process and results from that exercise.

The use of frozen soil as ground improvement and temporary ground support for the excavation and construction of cross passages and adits has gained in popularity over the last decade. Frozen soil provides a number of advantages for this application such as being waterproof, structurally stable, and working well with any soil type. One of the greatest advantages is the ability for the system to be adaptable to the project geometry and site limitations. Multiple case histories illustrate that freezing can occur from the ground surface, from within the tunnel, or as a combination.
