The Fabrica Mine of the Brazilian iron ore company Ferteco mines on an extremely inhomogenous ore deposit. A large amount of the crude ore consists of fines minus 100 micron which cannot be sold without further treatment because of its chemical and physical properties. In order to make full use of the mined crude ore an expansion program has been realized which incorporates among others a concentrator to produce classified blast furnace ore , sinter feed and pellet feed. The pellet feed is converted in a 2.5 million tons per year Lurgi Dravo plant into high grade pellets. The paper discusses the selection of the concentration process, the pelletizing process and describes the experiences with the operation plant during the startup and the first years of operation.

The performance of five dense-medium washers was evaluated in four preparation plants. Three of the plants were making a two-product separation that produced a clean coal and a refuse; one plant employed dense-medium vessels in series to effect a primary and a secondary separation. The secondary drum-type washer produced a low-ash metallurgical coal and an intermediate-ash product suitable for plant fuel or steam generation. The sharpness-of-separation was excellent for all four primary separations and the secondary separation.

INTRODUCTION The Magma mine, located at Superior, AZ, some 100 km (60 miles) east of Phoenix, was discovered in 1875, and was originally mined for silver. The property was acquired by W. B. Thompson who formed the Magma Copper Co. in 1910. Prior to 1965, square-set mining and cut-and-fill methods were used to mine steeply dipping veins at Magma. Ore was moved to the chute by gravity in the square-set stopes and by slusher in the cut-and-fill stopes. The stopes were gobbed with waste from the surface and development headings in the mine. The original square-set method of mining was modi¬fied in order to extract replacement ore bodies in limestones that dipped at 0.52 rad (30°) and varied in thick¬ness from 4.6 to 38 m (15 to 125 ft). Mining of these ore bodies was done by starting at the upper lateral ex¬tremities and retreating to the access openings. The timber square sets and cribbing were used as temporary support, the ground being allowed to cave as the mining retreated. It was found, however, that mining in such a manner was very inefficient; safety hazards increased be¬cause of the blocky and fractured characteristics of the ore and the weakness of the hanging wall. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining is now the primary stoping method used at Magma, and no pillars are left for later extraction. Four ore bodies are pres¬ently being mined. These ore bodies (see Fig. 1) dip conformably at 0.52 rad (30°) to the east with the host limestone and shale sediments, their average strike length is about 122 m (400 ft), and their thickness varies from 9 to 38 m (30 to 125 ft). The ore bodies are separated by varying thicknesses of barren rock. Three of them come together at various elevations primarily in the area of the main feeder fault, but there is an apparent horizontal displacement of about 23 m (75 ft) on the main feeder fault which complicates stope layout. The method as originally applied has been modified in order to mine more efficiently ore bodies that are 9 m (30 ft) or more in thickness. The modification was made to mine all the ore at a given elevation before dropping down for the cut below. The advantage of this is that mining is done on a horizontal plane and there¬fore muck removal can be mechanized. Also multiple faces are made available, thereby improving overall min¬ing efficiency. Another major change made was to carry a 6.7-m (22-ft) face when mining the top sill and a 6.4-m (21-ft) face when mining under fill rather than the former standard 3.35-m (11-ft) high face. This change lengthens the mining cycle and cuts mat prepa¬ration costs in half. Stopes are laid out (see Fig. 2) so that maximum mining panels are available and yet one stope crew will not tie up too much of the ore reserve. One stope might consist of as many as 20 panels, and these panels are divided evenly on opposite sides of the extraction cross¬cut. The stope layout is planned so that the maximum tramming distance to the orepass will not exceed 30.5 m (100 ft) on the crosscut and 38 m (125 ft) in the panel. A modified push-pull field test and a computer model of cation exchange were developed to aid in evaluating cation exchange parameters prior to in situ mining. Reliable determination of these parameters is essential when modeling restoration of groundwater quality. The field test involves a much larger volume and much less disturbance to the ore sample than is feasible with laboratory measurements. This test can be performed in two or three weeks. It is relatively inexpensive, requiring one injection- production well and two or more wells for collecting samples of leach solution. The use of the model in interpreting test results is illustrated with field data from an in situ uranium mine. Much of the research was performed by the University of Texas at Austin, and was partially funded by the Bureau of Mines.

Granitic Pegmatite deposits are the chief source of commercial feldspar, micas, lithium minerals, tantalum-columbium, beryl, and certain types of kaolin. The output from pegmatite mines in the United States is small compared to other mineral products in terms of bulk or value, and much of it comprises only minor metals and nonmetals. Nevertheless, pegmatite minerals play a vital part in our domestic industrial economy, particularly in the ceramic and electrical industries. Numerous special purpose uses also are important, even though they require small quantities of raw materials. In recent years, realizing the potential importance of the pegmatite minerals, the U.S. Geological Survey, the United States Bureau of Mines, several state Bureaus of Mines, and a few private companies have carried on extensive programs of pegmatite studies in the New England and southeastern states, in the Black Hills area of South Dakota, in the Rocky Mountain region of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, and in various parts of Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California. Currently, some of the pegmatite minerals such as micas and spodumene are selectively separated by the flotation process. To a lesser extent a few plants are selectively floating feldspar and quartz. Much of the credit for the above progress goes to the fine work done by U.S. Bureau of Mines (1), and companies such as Foote Minerals (2). Additional research efforts by the New Mexico Bureau of Mines (3) has successfully demonstrated selective separation of micas, beryl, spodumene, lepidolite, microlite, quartz and feldspar from a complex Pegmatite containing all these minerals. Since the nature of the mineralization of various valuable components of a pegmatite deposit is such that selective separation of some of these can be carried out at a coarse size using the Heavy Media Separation technique, it was felt that such a system should be investigated for selective preconcentration of their minerals. It was also felt that of all the :MS systems available, the DYNA WHIRLPOOL (DWP) device which allows a close control and adjustment of specific gravity should provide a means of achieving the above goal. Once the desired preconcentration of one or more of the pegmatite mineral assemblage is achieved, the available selective flotation techniques should provide effective recovery of various minerals into marketable products. This paper presents technical and economic aspects of selective preconcentration of some of the pegmatite minerals followed by selective flotation to produce marketable products.

There are close to two million tons of Industrial Minerals processed and sold in North America wherein the processor/marketer has no affiliation with the source mine. The largest quantity, about 800,000 tons, is barium sulfate, which is sourced in lump ore form mainly from China and India. The Alumina Trihydrate Industry sources several hundred thousand tons from various alumina refineries. Substantial quantities of bauxite, zircon, magnesite, and fluorspar arrive in North American ports each month. There are also rapidly growing quantities of offshore talcs and calcium carbonate ores being processed in U.S. plants. These feedstocks are usually quite pure, have unique properties, and enjoy bulk rail or waterborne freight economies that allow successful competition with locally sourced raw materials. With increasing restrictions on mining activities, and the increasing need for sophisticated functional minerals, the importation of minerals will continue to grow.

Attrition milling, once employed exclusively for the dispersion of pigments, has in recent years found a host of new applications in the area of mineral processing and mineral-pigment production. Broadly categorized, attrition milling is divided into two classes, as defined by the machinery's function, vibratory milling and rotational milling. Each mill type has been defined as a variation on ball milling and the terms, "vibratory ball mill" and stirred ball mill" appear in the literature. The primary design differences between attrition and ball mills are: (1) a stationary canister (or shell) (2) smaller grinding media (3) grinder energy is motor limited rather than gravity limited (4) strong media/feed size dependance.

There are numerous techniques and predictive models used by geologists and mining engineers to define coal reserves and plan mines. The traditional reserve estimation methods commonly used include the isopach, triangular, polygonal, inverse-distance weighting, weighted-moving-average, and trend-surface methods. Geostatistically-based estimation techniques are now being examined by many geologists and mine planners as a superior alternative to these traditional methods. With today's coal mine development costs often exceeding $100 million, and power generation $1 billion, it is logical that a technique that can indicate the degree of confidence associated with a reserve estimate (fuel supply), and thus also the degree of risk, is highly desirable to the coal producer, the financiers, and those desiring to commit to coal utilization under short or long-term supply arrangements.

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

Gold Quarry is a sediment-hosted, epithermal disseminated gold deposit located along the Carlin Trend. Gold, hosted by allochthonous Ordovician siltstones and cherts, is localized at the intersection of structures sympathetic to the major Good Hope and Gold Quarry faults. The magnitude of Gold Quarry was discovered in 1979 by surface exploration and by percussion holes drilled near the Maggie Creek orebody. Four years of development drilling delineated an open pit mineable gold deposit that contains 130 Mt (144 million st) of ore at an average 1.68 g/t (0.049 oz per st) of gold and includes a high-grade core of 46 Mt (51 million st) that average 2.64 g/t (0.077 oz per st) gold. Milling of the higher-grade portion began in 1985.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure, and other types of sensors are increasingly being used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP) while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration, and testing methodologies that were employed by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide Internet Protocol data transport. INTRODUCTION To enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry [1]. However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology (IT) infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer IP-based technologies that are part of IIoT. This was the case with a mine in the Western United States; it lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. The mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios. DATA RADIO SELECTION The primary selection criteria for the data radios were network data format, modulation type, and radio channel spacing. The network data format decided upon was Internet Protocol. This format allowed for straightforward integration between the IP-enabled data acquisition system located in a remote heading and the network switch located in the control room. It also eliminated the added complexity of additional network hardware such as Ethernet to Serial converters. IP additionally provided a direct path to integration into higher bandwidth networks, such as fiber optic, should they become available."

Abstract - This paper examines the ventilation network problem from a view point of solving a system of B equations in B unknowns, where B is the number o f branches in the network. Based on Kirchhoff s current and voltage laws, the solution to the general ventilation network problem must satisfy B network equations. In this paper, the air quantities and control-device pressures are chosen as variables and are grouped into B dependent variables (unknowns) and B independent variables, resulting in a system of B equations in B unknowns. Based on whether their variables are dependent or independent, the network branches are classified into f our types: five d, non-fixed, p-fixed, and q fixed. The ventilation network problem may include all four types of branches. There are .some conditions under which the problem as defined in this manner does not have a unique solution. To have a unique solution, the Jocabian matrix of the equations m us! he nonsingular. It then follows that: • the number of branches with independent air quantities must be less than or equal to the number of chords with respect to a spanning tree; •the subnetwork of branches with independent air quantities must not contain any cutset; and •the suhnetwork of branches with dependent control-device pressures must not contain any cutset. These three conditions must be met regardless of the values for the variables. In addition to the problem formulation, a solution procedure applying the Newton (or Newton-Raphson) method is outlined and illustrated with an example problem.

Red bauxites from Breadnut Valley, Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, are very homogeneous in texture. Bauxite minerals are uniformly distributed in a groundmass, the predominant grain size being smaller than l um (Figure 1 Although the deposits have a massive, non-stratified structure, they all seem to have been affected by postformational faulting which is evidenced by shear zones running subvertically through the deposits. These shear zones stand out very clearly because of a yellow staining along their faces. Often yellow zones, ranging from a few m to several cm in thickness, have developed. When the shear zones are cut at an angle, they appear as yellow veins. Near the surface of the deposits, yellow material forms shallow irregular lenses (Figure 2). In most cases, tree roots (hair roots), or their imprints, are associated with the shear zones or stained areas. In fact, the yellowish color is especially pronounced along these roots and often disappears where the roots end (Figure 3). The mineral composition and texture of red groundmass and yellow zones are markedly different. Secondary phosphate minerals and a higher goethite to hematite ratio characterize the mineral composition of the yellow zones. It should also be noted that Al-substitution in goethite from these areas is significantly higher than in goethite occurring in the groundmass (Figure 4).

It is the hope of the author that this paper, largely a compilation of observations and opinions built up over 20 years of experience in cold and remote areas may be of some help to others in designing better plants for the future in the north. The north is not as difficult to operate in as the better story tellers make it appear to be. ()n the other hand for 6 months of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut a multi-million dollar plant down at -4n' F with a 4n M.P.H, wind. It only takes one man door improperly latched to freeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later while you are having Christmas dinner, a watchman will call up to report that the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Basic things to remember in plant design for cold and remote areas are: everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore he kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas on the other hand must he adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles for instance have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50° F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze up. People in a remote area are expensive. The capital investment per employee may be as high as $30,000; with fringe benefits per annum costs of an employee will he as high as 812,000 per year regardless of basic wage rate. It

The use of an integrated software package to simulate and optimize the performance of mineral processing circuits is illustrated by three examples. Each represents application of the software and associated techniques to optimization of an existing plant. In the first example, a South-western U. S. copper company employs the method to simulate and improve performance in crushing, screening and SAG milling. A second copper producer evaluates equipment changes and flowsheet alternatives in a closed-circuit ball mill-cyclone operation. A Southeastern U. S. aluminum refinery optimizes performance of a dry milling and classification circuit for production of carbon particles used in anode casting. Graphical and tabular data describe the circuits simulated and the results achieved in each example.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents (1) modified slipform system which was employed for simultaneous concrete placement for permanent lining and Instruction of a partition wall in the execution of a ventilation shaft 620m deep, and (2) current shaft sinking techniques which have been applicable and efficient for the subsurface conditions in Japan. MODIFIED SLIPFORM SYSTEM FOR PERMANENT LINING OF VERTICAL SHAFT General Information This paragraph deals with rapid construction by using modified slipform system for the permanent concrete lining and a partition wall of ventilation shaft, which has inside diameter of 620m and depth of 620m, of Enasan Highway Tunnel. The general feature of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 1 and standard section of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 2. The geological condition surrounding the shaft is mainly of ryolite and surface is of talus, but as a whole, they are rather weak and weathered rocks with faults, fissures and clay seams. 220mm borehole for the geological investigation was used as a drainage hole, predicting the amount of water inflow into the shaft to be 10t/min. The shaft was executed mainly by means of the conventional short step sinking method of 1.2m lift, employing temporary headframe and hoists. For each lift, 40 to 50cm thick temporary concrete lining was used. About 28,600m3 of rocks were excavated and

The Grand Isle Sulphur Mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The depth of water at this location is about 50 feet. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases which were originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Company by the State of Louisiana, and which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the Department of the Interior of the United States, pursuant to Section 6(b) of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. On September 19, 1956, Freeport Sulphur Company acquired from Humble Oil & Refining Company the sulphur rights underlying the tracts. This assignment was approved by the Secretary of the Interior on July 12, 1957. The Director, United States Geological Survey, approved Freeport Sulphur Company as Operator on July 31, 1957. Actual design began in September 1956; the first structural contract was let December 15, 1957, and offshore erection began in June 1958. The initial phase of construction will be completed and production started in early 1960. The estimated total cost of the project is $30,- 000,000, of which $8,000,000 is the extra cost for being in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mineral exploration involves the selective collection, organization, evaluation, and interpretation of geologic and economic data. The sources for such data are original field observations and existing documented information of various types (publications, reports, maps, company files, etc.). As exploration data are accumulated, their storage, organization, indexing, and J retrieval is key to exploration progress. Initial use of computers by mineral exploration groups indicates that data can be meaningfully handled by machines. A computer system makes possible: 1) the storage, manipulation, collation, and selective retrieval of data; 2) the utilization of data banks developed by geologic service groups and available at relatively low cost; and 3) the retrieval of stored data more rapidly, completely, and effectively than by manual systems. Profitable utilization of these capabilities is conditioned by several factors, particularly by the information selected for the system data base and by the design of the computer system itself.

INTRODUCTION Shabanie mine, situated some 180 km east of Bula¬wayo, has been a producer of chrysotile asbestos for more than 50 years. The ore bodies occur in serpentinized dunite, which overlies talc-carbonate schist. A zone of relatively competent rock of varying thickness occurs between the schist and the ore bodies, which are gen¬erally less competent. The hanging wall of the ore bodies is economic, and the hanging-wall serpentine carries a variable subeconomic amount of fiber. It is important to note that, in general, the ore body competence is less than that of the foot and hanging-wall formations. Historical After surface operations ceased, cut-and-fill stoping was used to win ore from underground; this was success¬ful until the increasingly stoped-out area caused insta¬bility in the stope pillars and back. Consequently, dur¬ing the early 1950s, a gradual change to cave-mining methods was made, the ore being won by hand lashing in drawpoints, situated in the basement of the stope blocks, and passed through orepasses under gravity to the haulage level some 13 m below. About this time, interest was focused on the sub¬level caving method in use in Swedish iron ore mines: it was felt that it might be applied economically to the Shabanie ore bodies. Accordingly, in 1958, an experi¬mental stope block was laid out in which sublevel inter¬vals and extraction tunnel spacing were 9 m. The tun¬nels (ring drilling drives) were oriented on strike-in contrast to the Swedish system, in which crosscuts that retreat from hanging to footwall are used. The advantages of the method were quickly appre¬ciated by the operating personnel and, despite the in¬evitable teething troubles pertaining to the introduction of any new mining method, it was not long before sub¬level caving was providing a high proportion of the mill feed. The disadvantages also became apparent at an early stage, however, and, from that time to the present, continuing modifications have been made to mining lay¬outs in an effort to improve ore recovery. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The mine is served by a vertical hoisting shaft, in which two skips, a man cage and a service cage, provide adequate capacity for production requirements. The rock hoist is a Ward Leonard control hoist, in which two electric motors drive a common gearbox. The man winder is driven by an a-c motor. Several auxiliary shafts provide secondary egress and intake and return ventilation. Main haulage levels are above (Fig. I a and b). Blasthole fan patterns are drilled by drifters of 100 mm bore, drilling 41-mm holes; when a sufficient strike length has been drilled, a slot is cut in the upper¬most sublevel and the rings are broken into the slot. Initially, a limited tonnage is drawn, since it is essential to ensure that the hanging wall caves behind the retreat¬ing stope face. Once this has been established, maxi¬mum tonnage can be drawn, as described later in this chapter, under the heading "Draw Control." The broken rock is loaded by 0.14 and 0.20-m3 load¬ers into cocopans (rocker-dumping type of tipping truck), which are hand trammed to orepasses, discharg¬ing on the haulage where 11-t electric trolley locomo¬tives haul 3.95-m3 Granby cars to the main shaft bins. As is evident from Fig. 1, the layout is simple, the block is brought rapidly into production, there is a high degree of selectivity and flexibility, and the result is a low-cost high-productivity mining method. DEVELOPMENT Main haulages are developed at 3.2 x 3.2 m, and once the service winze connections have been completed the development of the sublevels is undertaken. The footwall drives are cut first, to obtain access to the block. These ends are of the standard section, 2.4 x 2.8 m, and from them crosscuts at intervals of 70 m are driven through the ore body to the hanging wall. These crosscuts are used to supplement the geo¬logical information previously obtained from diamond core drilling, and they provide additional and more de¬tailed data on fiber percentages and lengths, structural features, and other relevant criteria which are used to build up the geological assessment of the area and to classify it in terms of the geomechanics rock classification (Laubscher and Taylor, 1977). The crosscuts also allow the necessary orepasses to be sited conveniently so that tramming distances from the loading points are not excessive. Development Drilling Once the skeleton development has been completed, the extraction headings are developed at 2.4 x 2.4 m as shown in Fig. 1. Standard development practice is to use crews of a machine operator and his helper, equipped with air-leg mounted jackhammers, to drill rounds of 1.8 m with integral tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Rock fragmentation size distribution is often used as an important index to account for the blasting effect because it directly affects the subsequent loading, transportation, and secondary crushing. Due to the mismatching of explosive and rock wave impedance, high boulder yield often occurs which affects the blasting effect. In this study, methods of measuring rock acoustic impedance, rock strength point loading, and detonation wave velocity have been used to obtain more accurate input parameters. Then, in the watershed image segmentation technique, the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and Rosin-Rammler distribution functions have been used to analyze and quantitatively describe the rock fragmentation size distribution in the existing muck-pile. Finally, taking the rock properties, explosive performance, blasting parameters, and system characteristic variable into consideration, support vector machine (SVM) regression model has been analyzed on the learning and prediction of samples. The results show that SVM has a good prediction accuracy, high precision, and strong generalization ability. The optimized matching coefficient of rock and explosive wave impedance K ranges from 2.50 to 2.58 times. This study has developed a series of simple, accurate methods for rock properties analysis, detonation wave velocity measurement, and muck-pile model image processing, and a basis for predicting and evaluating rock fragmentation size distribution and optimizing the matching coefficient before carrying out a blasting operation.
