Water is the mainstay for the beneficiation of fine-size coal and minerals, but it is also the least desirable constituent of the final product. The basic concept of the novel process described in this paper is based on the differential surface heat absorption capacity of the individual particles. When a differentially heated solid mixture is placed on a moving belt that has been coated with low-temperature melting resin, the hotter component of the mixture will stick to the belt while the relatively cooler component will stay free on the belt and fall off at the end of the belt run. Experiments were conducted with pyrite, coal and quartz particles of 6 × 18 mesh size. The goal of the test program was to find the optimum conditions at which there exists a required temperature difference between minerals and coal particles by controlling the operating and system variables. Preliminary test results show that there is a potential for separating mineral matter from coal using the thermo-adhesive separation technique.

This article offers one of the infrequent looks at Chinese mining. It includes a brief review by Parrish of a tungsten symposium held there and his comments on and impressions of the mines he visited. In early Oct. 1981, a Symposium on the Geology of Tungsten was held in the Peoples Republic of China. There were approximately 100 participants. Half of them were Chinese. The remainder included representatives of the United Nations, geologists from other nations in Southeast Asia, and 10 invited specialists from other countries. The invited guests included K.F.G. Hosking of the Camborne School of Mines, United Kingdom; C.S. Hutchinson of the University of Malaysia; K. Mattson of LKAB Int. AB, Sweden; T. Kwak of Latrobe University, Australia; K. Sato and S. Ishihara of the Geological Survey of Japan; M. Clarke of the Department of Mineral Resources, Indonesia; P. Bateman of the US Geological Survey; and the author. R. Horsnail of Amax was also invited but was unable to attend because of delayed visa clearance. The meeting was noteworthy because the Chinese were presenting more than half the papers. In addition, following the formal session, everyone was taken to the famed Jiangxi tungsten district and toured four mines there. Organization and Background The idea for a symposium on tungsten geology was brought up in late 1979 during a visit to China by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and, in particular, by members of the Regional Mineral Resources Development Centre (RMRDC) of the United Nations. Discussions continued and in the spring of 1981 invitations were sent to selected geologists throughout the world. China's Ministry of Geology handled arrangements, scheduling, and logistics. Travel to China and all correspondence before the symposium were coordinated by the Bandung, Indonesia Bureau of RMRDC. All costs in China were met by the Peoples Republic of China. Airfares and "per diem" enroute for participants were paid by respective governments, sponsors, or individuals. On Oct. 10, visiting participants entered China from Hong Kong. The author and a few others traveled by train to Guangzhou (Canton). Most of the group flew in the next day. The entire group was then taken to Nanchang, traveling by sleeper train and arriving on Oct. 11. The symposium group stayed at the Kiangsi Hotel, where the meetings were held. Meetings Oct. 11 was a day of orientation and rest. The group was taken to an art museum and treated to a Chinese opera movie. The formal meetings began on Monday, Oct. 12. Simultaneous translations aided presentations, though more than half the Chinese speakers delivered their talks in English. The acoustics and sound system were excellent, and the Chinese provided 35-mm and overhead projectors. There was no screen, however, and the yellow, painted wall that was used detracted from projection clarity. In general, the Chinese papers were detailed, thoughtful, and professional. Some, naturally, were stronger than others. Taking them as a unit, one derives the following sequence to the Chinese approach to tungsten exploration: (1) Geologic investigations with mapping at a scale of 1:200,000 accompanied by only minor geochemical or geophysical work. (2) Geophysical investigation with regional gravity and magnetic surveys directed toward identifying deep, tectonic systems and seeking granites in thick, crustal environments. The Dallas Mill Creek Drainage Relief Tunnel is an 8.04 km (5 mile) tunnel that will provide 100-year flood protection for impacted neighborhoods in the east Dallas area. “Big Tex” is a main beam gripper TBM capable of changing diameters in mid-tunnel to excavate 2.83 km (9,290 ft) of 11.45 m (37.58 ft) diameter tunnel and 5.21 km (17,095 LF) of 9.93 m (32.58 ft) diameter tunnel. Construction began in April 2018 and is anticipated to be completed in 2024. This paper will discuss the challenges and lessons learned during assembly and re-assembly, start-up and mining with “Big Tex.”

Over 10 percent of the United States of America or 41 percent of the Federal lands is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as Public Lands. The mission is to manage the use of these lands and their resources. The way in which BLM carries out its mission is being refocused under the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management for the benefit of various human needs including environmental, social and economic values. The Bureau is developing methods to integrate the renewable and non-renewable resources programs into the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management. Exploration, development and extraction of energy or mineral resources on Public Lands are affected. The statements that following the next few pages are my personal views as a scientist (economic geologist -mining technologist) who is and has been involved for the last twenty years in the multiple-use management of Public Lands. They are not necessarily the position of the Bureau of Land Management, although much of the information on which I base my views comes from my experience with the BLM. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages over 10 percent of the United States (270 million acres or 108 million hectares) which is 41 percent of the Federal Lands. Lands managed by BLM are known as Public Lands as opposed to the National Forest Lands which are Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976 which in Sec. 102 states ??that it is the policy of the United States (7) ?that management be on the basis of multiple use and sustained yield??, the mission of the BLM is rapidly refocused under the concepts of biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystems-based management for the benefit of the environment, human needs and socio-economic values.

Arizona is a sun-belt growth-region where 13 tons of industrial (nonmetallic) minerals is being produced annually per capita. In 19B5, non-fuel mineral production reached $1.532 billion and consisted of metallic ($1.277 billion-84%) and nonmetallic ($253.5 million-16%) earth materials. Sand-and-gravel value was second only to copper. over 90% of the value of nonmetallics is represented by combined sand, gravel, cement, and lime. The remaining less than 10% ($25 million) was attributed mainly to stone, specific volcanic products (cinder, perlite, pumice), gypsum, clays, salt, zeolite, and others. Current interest in industrial-mineral development in Arizona is high, especially in the geologically complex Basin and Range region.

Transitioning from diesel-powered loading and hauling machinery to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) responds to the need for deepening underground mines as regulations become tighter. When using BEVs, exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions can be eliminated, and the energy required for the machines is used more effectively. Unlike their diesel counterparts, which are refueled, BEV loading and hauling machines — specifically, load haul dump (LHD) machines — can use battery swapping. This brings additional aspects to the operation that need to be considered, which have not yet been studied extensively. This study used discrete event simulation (DES) to analyze how the different numbers of BEV LHDs affect queueing and productivity when using different numbers of batteries and different swapping times in an underground block cave mine. The results identified the formation of working groups, where the machines swapped their batteries concurrently within each group, and their relation to the queueing time. Additionally, the minimum number of batteries per machine was identified to maximize productivity while minimizing queueing time. This study demonstrates DES as a powerful tool to assess and analyze conceptual systems and identify their underlying structures, which can enhance the deployment of BEV LHDs in underground block cave mine operations.

DC Water’s Clean Rivers (DCCR) program involves the construction of approximately 29 km (18 mi) of CSO tunnels in Potomac Group soils in the Washington DC area. Soils include an upper predominantly over-consolidated fine grained plastic material facies (P/A) and lower predominantly coarsegrained facies (PTX). As earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are mainly used in such soils, the correct approach to soil conditioning can make a considerable difference in TBM performance. Soil conditioning laboratory tests are often completed during the planning phase prior to TBM excavation to develop a baseline for soil conditioning, reduce risks, minimize costs, and improve performance. However, only a few basic tests are standardized to date, and conditioning regimes are fine-tuned during the mining phase. The paper illustrates the effort carried out to identify the correct soil conditioning regime for both PA and PTX facies to improve TBM overall performance and reduce ground movement during the excavation of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) in Washington DC.

Specialty silica materials, as defined in this chapter, are rocks that consist predominantly of silica (SiO2) and are produced as chunks, round pebbles, and sawed or trimmed blocks and other shapes for nonconstruction applications. The rock types include quartzite, sandstone, novaculite, flint, chert, and vein quartz. Other terms used commercially include jasper, silex, lascas, and rock crystal. In its publication, Minerals Yearbook, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) reports the production and consumption of some specialty silica materials under several headings. Quartzite, sandstone, and novaculite used in abrasive applications are addressed by the USBM under Abrasive Materials. Lascas, a type of vein quartz used in growing synthetic quartz crystals and in fusing applications, is discussed under Quartz Crystal. Zinc oxide based electronic ceramics are being used increasingly to protect electric and electronic circuits against transient voltage surges. Varistors are produced by sintering and annealing ZnO based powder compacts through long sintering and annealing cycles. Because of the length of these cycles, a manufacturing plant is saddled with expensive high temperature equipment with low throughput. Ceramics Kingston Inc. has developed a new technology that uses 2.45 GHz microwave energy for sintering and annealing. The new technology has the potential for increasing equipment and labour productivity very considerably. Additionally, the new technology will result in appreciable energy savings and add flexibility to the manufacturing process. Microstructural examination of varistors sintered conventionally and by microwave technology showed considerably smaller grain size in the microwave sintered materials. The electrical properties of the microwave sintered ceramics compare very favorably with those of the ones sintered conventionally.

INTRODUCTION One of the most important tasks facing the opera¬tors of deep-level gold mines is supporting the roof strata in the immediate vicinity of the stope faces. Some of the deeper gold mines operate at depths ex¬ceeding 3.0 km; the extreme mining depths and the tabular nature of the gold-bearing reefs result in high stress concentrations at the abutments of the stope faces. These, in turn, lead to extensive fracturing of even the hardest quartzites. Although most of these fractures develop in a stable manner, there have been many instances where rock failure occurred suddenly, resulting in a considerable amount of damage to the underground workings. Such violent rock failures commonly are known as "rock bursts," and they are typical of many hard-rock mines that are operating at great depths. To safeguard mining personnel and equipment against the effects of stable and unstable rock failures, adequate support must be provided to the fractured roof as quickly and as effec¬tively as possible. Traditionally, timber props and timber packs have been utilized to provide roof support in gold mine stopes up to 1.5 m wide. Both methods of support suffer from the fundamental disadvantage of generating sup¬port only in reaction to movement of the strata. Since unrestrained strata movement often results in a break¬down of the frictional forces that preserve the stability of the intensely fractured roof strata, it is essential that stope supports have rapid load-bearing characteristics. An equally important requirement is that the roof sup¬ports be able to accommodate displacements of the rock mass. A third requirement of roof supports in gold mine stopes is that they must be able to accommodate the high rates of stope convergence typical of rock bursts. The hydraulic prop is the obvious choice for sup¬porting the stope faces in deep-level hard-rock mines. Since hydraulic props can be installed with a positive setting load, they can provide roof support that is independent of strata movement. By equipping the hydraulic props with yield valves, they meet the require¬ment of being able to accommodate rock-mass displace¬ments. However, the requirement of being able to accommodate high rates of stope convergence without overloading or damaging the rock strata was rather difficult to meet. The first introduction of hydraulic roof supports into gold mine stopes showed that conventional hy¬draulic props, such as those used in coal mines, were completely unsuitable for a number of reasons, in¬cluding: 1) Since drilling and blasting are used to break the ore in gold mine stopes, supports installed close enough to be effective are exposed to the vigor of the blast. Conventional coal-mining props suffered extensive blast damage, despite being protected by a blast barricade. 2) The environmental conditions in gold mine stopes favor corrosion. The high quartz content and the abrasiveness of the ore further aggravate the problem by damaging the protective coatings on the hydraulic surfaces. Simply changing the design of gold mine props to have the piston project from the bottom rather than from the top resulted in dramatic improvements in the service life of the props. The improvement was attributable to external water in the stope washing the fine quartz grit away from the hydraulic surfaces, rather than concentrating the particles between the cylinder and piston of the prop. 3) The most obvious deficiency of conventional coal mining props was their inability to yield rapidly enough to accommodate the high convergence rates of rock bursts without overloading the supports. As a result of the first disappointing results with hydraulic supports in narrow hard-rock stopes mined by drilling and blasting, a comprehensive research and development program was undertaken. The hydraulic props resulting from several years of research and exten¬sive field trials are described herein. To date (1978), more than 130,000 of these props have been manufac¬tured and used successfully in a number of mines and under a variety of geological conditions. Although many of the detailed specifications are directed spe¬cifically to gold mining conditions, there are a number of points that are of general importance in the design of underground support systems for tabular excavations in hard-rock mines of any type. SPECIFICATIONS FOR RAPID-YIELDING PROPS Yield Requirements The yield requirements for hydraulic props in deep¬level hard-rock gold mines are summarized in the fol¬lowing paragraphs. Slow Yield Load: The design of the yield valve must allow the yield load to be preset to between 300 and 400 kN. This flexibility is necessary to account for the differences in the strength properties of the roof and floor strata. Drop in Load Under Slow Yield: The drop in sup¬port load during a slow yield should be as small as possible, but it should not exceed 5% of the slow-yield load. Rapid-Yield Load: The load exerted by the prop during periods of rapid stope convergence should be as close as possible to the slow-yield load. The rapid-yield load should not exceed the slow-yield load by more than 15% at yield rates of 1.0 m/s. The limitation of the upper valve of the yield load is important; it deter¬mines the hydraulic performance of the yield valve. The hydraulic props that satisfy this criterion have performed well, even under severe rock bursts. Load Changes Under Rapid Load: On some of the earlier rapid-yielding props, conditions of dynamic in¬stability were observed; these conditions resulted in a complete breakdown of support resistance. It is essen¬tial that the force oscillations during rapid yielding be as small as possible, not exceeding -*5% of the average rapid-yield load at a yield rate of 1.0 m/s. The Woodsmith Project is located in north-eastern England within the North York Moors National Park. The strata contains the world’s largest known high-grade Polyhalite resource of around 2.66 billion tonnes. The Project was initiated by York Potash Limited (YPL), a subsidiary of Sirius Minerals plc., but in March 2020, a takeover was completed by Anglo American, one of the largest mining companies in the world. Polyhalite is an evaporite mineral and contains essential nutrients required for plant growth. The Polyhalite will be extracted via two deep mine shafts and transported underground from the mine site to a Materials Handling Facility on a Mineral Transport System (MTS), which comprises a high-capacity conveyor belt system located within a 4.9 m ID tunnel. In 2018, STRABAG were awarded with the design and construction of the MTS tunnel and associated infrastructure, including the high-capacity conveyor system. The scope of work consists of 300 m of open cut, 100 m SCL tunnel, 36.5 km TBM drive (originally anticipated as three separate TBM drives) along with a network of underground caverns at the Woodsmith Mine. The construction of two 380 m deep intermediate access shafts was later awarded as Amendments to the Contract. The tunnel is constructed using a Herrenknecht Single Shield TBM. As a result of how the various elements of the project have developed over time, the first TBM drive has been extended to ~29 km making it the worlds longest single heading TBM Tunnel when complete. The option of completing the entire tunnel length with a single heading TBM drive is currently being assessed by Anglo American and STRABAG. This unprecedented tunnel length requires two intermediate shafts to provide essential access and services, the first intermediate shaft is at Lockwood beck (LWB) and the second is at Ladycross (LDX). The LWB shaft has been constructed utilising the innovative Blind Boring technique never used before in the UK. This paper will explain the methodology and technical risk management associated with this technique. The authors believe that the collaborative approach between all contract partners is and continues to be the important contributor for the success of this project.

Investigations have been carried out to evolve a grinding aid useful in grinding a 40% iron-bearing magnetite containing quartz as the major gangue, based on studies conducted with pure magnetite, pure quartz and its synthetic mixture. These investigations established that an addition of 200 g of CaO per metric ton of ore was the most effective in grinding quartz preferentially over magnetite at 75% solids concentration by weight. The limited rheological studies conducted suggest that the effect could either be due to dispersion or the structural modification of quartz. More importantly, a new concept, that of Critical Solids Concentration, where two different minerals behave like one with respect to response to communication in a tumbling mill, has been introduced for the, first time. Above this concentration, one of the minerals is ground at a faster rate than the other, whereas the reverse is the case below this concentration.

INTRODUCTION The increasing price of gold and silver over the past 10 years has caused increasing activity in the exploration, evaluation and development of precious metals projects. Many of these deposits are relatively low grade and short lived which makes them economically sensitive to the major project variables such as metal price, capital cost, operating cost and of course, tonnage and grade. These deposits often have a high variability (a coefficient of variation -- o/u -- of 2 to 5) and an intermixing of ore and waste, making ac- curate ore reserve estimation difficult, especially when using traditional estimation techniques. Often, the estimation errors are not the 10-20% that we see in base metal deposits, but the errors in grade and tonnage can be as high as 50%, which can obviously have a very substantial impact on project Recent developments in geostatistics when coupled with a sound geologic under- standing of the deposit can significantly improve reserve estimates of these variable precious metals deposits. Examples will be given of actual deposits where the traditional estimates were significantly different from the mining reality. An attempt will be made to explain the applicable geostatistical tools with a minimum of geostatistical jargon and without complicated formulas. The key to improving the reserve estimates is a clear understanding of the deposit geology and especially the structural controls, the use of local estimation techniques that recognize the intermixing of ore and waste and the effect of selective mining on recoverable reserves, and the use of a global reserve estimation technique to check the results of local estimation. Geologic Controls The vast majority of gold and silver deposits being mined or developed in the western United States would be classified as epithermal deposits. These are formed by hydrothermal fluids (hot water) flowing upward through the rocks and depositing the precious metals as the fluids cool or reach areas of lower pressure or favorable chemical sites. These environments are similar to present day hot springs-type environments with some deposits being clearly associated with surface hot springs such as the Homestake McLaughlin deposit in northern California. These hydrothermal deposits can occur in sedimentary rocks resulting in deposits such as those of the Carlin district or the Jerritt Canyon deposit or the hydrothermal systems can occur in volcanic rocks forming deposits such as Round Mountain, Manhattan or Paradise Peak. The mechanisms of formation were similar in either case with the solution flow controlled by geologic structure and precious metals deposited when the conditions of temperataure, pressure and chemical environment were favorable. The gold and silver hearing solutions travel through permeable faults and fracture systems depositing the metals along these channels. The grades are often highest in the central parts of these conduits (veins) with lower grades in the surrounding rocks. An understanding of the nature, distribution and orientation of these plumbing systems is important to a realistic reserve estimate. The point to be emphasized here is that, good, sound geology in the form of geologic mapping, logging of rotary chip samples and a few carefully logged core holes can signifi- cantly improve an ore reserve estimate.

A custom-designed shotcrete system, consisting of an 8-m3 (10-yd3) transit mixer and a shotcrete spray boom carrier, is used bya 2-man crew to transport and place up to 25 m3 (32 yd3) of steel-fiber reinforced, dry, silica fume shotcrete per II-hour shift. Shotcrete is custom blended by a local supplier and delivered predampened. Mix design and quality control is performed with a computer program that develops and graphs a properly balanced mix based upon the materials sieve analyses.

The widely used R70 method is modified to measure the self-heating propensity of low-rank coals. This modified R70 method enables the introduction of controlled amount of moist oxygen into the reaction vessel. Three coal lumps were collected from three different locations in a surface mine in the Powder River Basin. The coal samples were tested in oxygen flow with controlled moisture content under adiabatic condition. By measuring the relative humidity at the exhaust exit point of the testing setup, the flux and cumulative wetting heat that is consumed by coal samples can be determined. Through a better way of determining the coal’s specific heat, the total heat, including heat of wetting and coal’s oxidation heat, required to raise coal to a given temperature can be determined. Then, the contribution of heat of wetting at the different stages of the testing is quantified. The effects of evaporative heat through a group of tests have also been quantified. From this research, a better understanding of the effect of wetting heat on inducing low-rank coal’s spontaneous combustion can be acquired.

Lineament analysis, a remote sensing application, for geological structures, has been criticized, for its reliance on subjective interpretations. The Mine Safety & Health Administration's Roof Control Division performs lineament analyses with a technique that removes much subjectivity. Study areas are viewed on satellite images with software that allows examination under artificial sun azimuths and elevations. Extraneous lineaments are removed through successive steps of superposition, resulting in selection of the most robust linear features. Field investigations revealed a strong coincidence of joint and. fault zones that were parallel with projected lineaments. The Roof Control Division's successful identification o f lineaments associated with roof falls and high wall failures has prompted some mine managers to incorporate lineament analysis as a mine-planning tool. The identification of potentially hazardous ground conditions would allow mine operators to obviate safety concerns that might otherwise adversely affect the health and safety of miners.

During Hurricane Harvey over 60% of the 39 WWTPs, including the low-lying 25 MGD Sims North WWTP, and one third of the 382 lift stations owned and operated by the City of Houston were flooded resulting in extensive facility damage, loss of service and uncontrolled release of untreated wastewater into bayous and creeks. In response, the City has embarked on an effort to improve system resiliency by consolidating at-risk facilities with a network of deep sewer tunnels. These tunnels will provide secondary benefits to the collection system of augmenting the capacity of the existing 6,000 miles of sewer mains and lowering the collection system profile in poor performing areas. Investigations on the cost to mitigate the flood damages by raising the liquid stream processes at the Sims North WWTP is estimated at nearly $450 million. Instead of spending $450 million to raise the plant, the funds will be directed to providing a more robust and resilient wastewater system for the Sims basin area of Houston. The backbone of this new system is a 4.5-mile-long, 110 inch diameter deep gravity sewer tunnel that will convert a system heavily reliant on distributed lift stations to a majority gravity system with a deep consolidated lift station at the Sims South WWTP. This will also allow the City to address the flood prone infrastructure at Sims North and consolidate its operations into a single permitted outfall for this collection system. This approach is the outcome of a team effort focused on maximizing system resiliency and sustainability for the next 100 years. By thinking outside the box, the City of Houston will not only mitigate the flooding risk at Sims North WWTP, but also solve regulatory and operational challenges throughout the sewershed and deliver a winwin on multiple levels.

Increasing longwall panel dimensions, particularly face width in gassy coalbeds, may result in unexpected increases in methane emissions. To investigate this problem, continuous longwall face emission monitoring studies were conducted at two adjacent mines operating in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed, where longwall faces were to be extended from 229 to 305 m (750 to 1,000 ft). It was predicted by regression analysis of methane emissions data from 229 m (750 ft) wide longwall faces that extending faces to 305 m (1,000 ft) would increase methane emission rates by only 7 percent (0.6 m3/min (20 cfm)), to 8.6 m3/min (304 cfm) at the VP-1 Mine. In contrast, it was predicted that extending faces at the VP-3 Mine could increase methane emissions by as much as 13 percent (1.8 m3/min (65 cfm)) to 16.1 m3/min (567 cfm). The geologic and mine design factors in¬fluencing the variation in face emissions between the two mines will be discussed.

In late 1995 at the Randol symposium in Squaw Valley, I gave a paper which described the Itos project flowsheet. At that time, project construction was nearly completed and stmtup was close. This paper describes the ltos operation since then. To summa­rize things, startup occurred partially in late 1995 with full start­up of all components in about mid 1996. From then until now, April 1998, the plant has been running at partial capacity and has yet to achieve full production rates.
