In less than two years, Stratmin has discovered, explored, developed, financed and put into production by open pit, a large graphite mine. The deposit, hinted by airborne electromagnetic survey, was discovered in September 1987 through various ground geophysical surveys, diamond drilling and trenching. The open pit started production in February 1989, feeding a nearby leased mill at Notre-Dame-du-Laus (Quebec), having a processing capacity of 400 tons per day. A new 1,000 tonne per day mill was built at the mine site, in Lac-des-lies (Quebec) and began production in April 1990. The Lac-des-lies graphite operation is currently one of the largest of its kind in the world. Mine and mill facilities are operated by Stratmin Graphite, jointly owned by Stratmin Inc. (75%) and Imetal-France (25%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Imetal (France). From initial exports limited to Japan and United States, Stratmin Graphite is now exporting in fourteen different countries, attesting to the very high quality of its products, with grades ranging from 92% to 97% carbon. Among the numerous graphite deposits discovered in Canada, Stratmin Graphite Inc. has emerged as the leader and virtually the sole crystalline graphite producer in North America, operating on a continuous basis.

This paper compares the ash slagging potential of Illinois No. 6 Seam coal: as raw coal; as commercially cleaned coal processed in a baum-jig plant; and as coal cleaned to a reduced ash specification at the Electric Power Research Institute's Coal Cleaning Test Facility. The comparison is based on: ? ASTM ash fusibility data ? A slagging index ? Gravity fractionation analyses of critical mineral matter compounds ? Comparative pilot combustion tests. The first three grounds of comparison are laboratory data; and the final comparison involves burning approximately 15 tons of each coal at CONOCO's 1.5 MBtu/hr (440 KW) test combustor. The evidence of these .four comparisons indicates that lowering the ash specification of coal before combustion can significantly improve the ash slagging characteristics of Illinois 90. 6 Seam coal.

The production of portland cement requires that four basic elements -- calcium, silica, alumina and iron -- be ground to a fine powder, homogenized, and fed to the pyroprocessing unit, where it is burned to a cement clinker. The raw material must either be ground wet in a slurry form or dried and ground to a dry powder, with a fineness of approximately 85% passing the 200 M screen. According to the Portland Association's Plant Information Summary, approximately 38% of the U.S. capacity is ground wet and 62% ground dry. The Alimak Raise Method, using the Alimak Climber, has proven to be a new, fast, economical method of driving raises at the Iron King Branch of Shat-tuck Denn Mining Corporation, Humboldt, Arizona. In order to fully understand the advantages of the Alimak Raise Climber, it is necessary first to describe the basic machine; second, a complete cycle of a raise round; and third, the comparative speed and economy afforded the Iron King operation by using this new method of raise driving: The raise climber consists of a drilling platform that is raised and lowered by two 6.2 HP compressed air motors that drive, through roller chains and sprockets, three worm gears connected in series. These worm gears drive pinions which grip the guide rail rack. The worm gems are fitted with spring-loaded couplings so that a small rock or grit in the rack is passed over without disturbing the mesh between the rack and the other pinions.

Deposits of ferromanganese crust containing cobalt and nickel occur on the seafloor in the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. This paper describes developmental flotation metallurgy to separate crust from its associated substrate gangue. Important variables in ferromanganese crust flotation include reagent type, aeration rate, conditioning time and agitation intensity, pH, temperature, water type, and feed size distribution. Flotation in seawater of minus 600 ~m (-28 mesh) material assaying 6.2% Mn, 0.2% Co, and 0.13% Ni with diesel fuel-crude tall oil-sulfonate collectors produces concentrates assaying 15% Mn, 0.6% Co, and 0.3% Ni with recoveries of 89-95% while removing 62% of the feed weight.

An example illustrates the use of ASTM Standard E901-82, Classification System for Uranium Resources. The example demonstrates the dynamic nature of the process of classification and attests to the necessity of addressing both the aggregate needs of broad-scale resource planning and the specific needs of individual property evaluation. Problems that ,remain in fixing the classification of a given uranium resource include the uncertainty in estimating the quantity of undiscovered resources and resolving the differences that may exist in deciding when the drill-hole spacing is adequate to determine the tonnage and grade of discovered resources.

This paper is concerned with studying the dewatering behavior of three samples of iron ore products. The objective is to improve the industrial filtration performance by taking into account the laboratory results. Mineral samples came from the Iron Ore Quadrangle in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. These samples represent products from the industrial processing of hematitic ores. The samples have almost the same chemical and mineralogical compositions, but they have different size distributions and different specific surface areas. The filtration tests were performed using a modified Büchner funnel apparatus. The results indicate that size distribution and specific surface area have significant influences on dewatering behavior. For Sample 1, the addition of flocculant and/or surfactant was not essential to improving filtration performance. For Sample 3, the cake porosity and the cake thickness were influenced by the addition of the flocculant. On the other hand, the simultaneous addition of flocculant/surfactant decreased the cake formation time and reduced the cake moisture. For Samples 2 and 3, it was also observed that the industrial operation could be improved by taking into account these laboratory results. The search. for massive sulphide orebodies is steadily being extended to greater depths as well as expanding outward into the large portion of the earth's surface where the sulphide bodies are deeply weathered. Massive sulphide orebodies are generally not large in dimensions. They are not like disseminated type sulphide bodies that form large ground exploration targets that can be detected at greater and greater depths simply by increasing the geometrical spacing between the geophysical transmitter and receiver. In¬creasing the transmitter-receiver spacing with massive sulphide bodies eventually "waters down" the anomaly from the body until it disappears into noise. If high surface conductivity is present, as is common in areas of deep weathering, the problem is compounded by the increasing response of the surface layer, as the receiver-transmitter spacing is expanded. The search to greater depths has important implications other than just detection of the orebody. Drilling costs are increased and the probability of missing the target are increased. Missing an orebody is an expense that is difficult to evaluate in dollars per line mile of survey especially since one does not know the value of what was missed. A ground Pulse EM method has the capabilities of solving the problems of deeper exploration particularly in areas of surface weathering it can attain deep penetration without large coil spacings, it also provides information from a complete range of frequencies. The method has other operational advantages since it is free of geometrical restrictions as to coil alignments and can operate in areas of high power line noise.

For the purposes of this presentation, "refractory clay" is intended to include any clay suitable for refractory products and thus represents a description based on industrial application. Other common examples based on use would be white-ware clay, bleaching clay, paper clay, or cement clay. Most users and producers of refractories have specific quality requirements which determine the quality or type of clay that can be utilized. Many clays can however be interchanged or substituted in use by changing manufacturing processes or upgrading less desirable clays. U.S. Bureau of Mines publications (Ampian, 1985) categorize days into six groups. These are kaolin, fire clay, ball clay, bentonite, fuller's earth, and common clay. These are practical groupings based on clay production and usage in the United States. Among these groups bentonite, fuller's earth, and common clay are primarily composed of the minerals, smectite, illite, or chlorite, and are non-refractory. Kaolin, ball clay, and fire clay are commonly used in refractories and thus qualify as refractory clays.

The decreasing supplies of natural gas and low-sulfur crude oil available for electric power generation in the United States will unquestionably shift the emphasis to nuclear and coal fired steam power plants in the immediate future. Failure to do so will ensure our dependence on mid-east low sulfur crude oil comprising some 70% of the known world reserves, and imported liquid natural gas. By contrast, the United States has 43% of the known world reserves of anthracite, bituminous and semi-bituminous coal and 48% of all known coal reserves of the world including lignite. It is evident, therefore, that coal is alive and well and will continue to be a significant energy source for the production of electricity for many years. Of course, concern for our environment and the development of new technologies will ultimately curtail the utilization of coal for the generation of bulk power, but information released by the National Electric Reliability Council and the Federal Power Commission is worth repeating. In the year 1972 the total capacity of generating units in the United States was 379,552 Mw of which 149,974 Mw, or 39.5% of the total, was produced by coal fired steam turbines which consumed 344,700,000 tons of coal. New capacity additions planned or in construction show that in the year 1981 our total generating capacity will be 843,503 Mw, of which 257,995 Mw, or 30.6% of the total, if from coal only. Translating this increase into terms meaningful to the bulk material handling industry suggests that ten years from now the utility industry will require 590,000,000 tons of coal per year - a monumental task - if we are to sustain our current demand rate for power.

In the capitalistic system the success of a mining enterprise is measured by the rate of return on the investment and the speed by which its redemption is achieved. Exploration in search of ore deposits often results in the emergence of the lean orebody which does not meet basic company requisites. At this point a decision must be made whether to place the orebody into production or postpone production pending more favourable market conditions. The wisdom of this decision, borne out by future results, demonstrates the quality of a company's management and is instrumental in the degree of financial success it achieves. The project feasibility report must show a rate of return on the capital invested that is attractive to the company, plus its full redemption in the desired period of time, in order to bring the property into production on a sound economic basis. Mining companies have demonstrated their ability to bring the profitability of a marginal property from a point that says "no go" to a point of "go" by substantial reduction of expenditure without adversely affecting production rate or cost. Here is where the real challenge exists for today's mining engineers and plant designers; they will have to develop better ideas and concepts: ideas that will still allow maximum production at reduced capital expenditure, This is the sound way marginal orebodies can be brought into production without inflationary increases in the price of their product.

The discovery and development of explosives mark one of the most important findings in the history of civilization. Without explosives our vast economic enterprise concerning the mining of coal, copper, iron, aluminum, and various other ores could not function. Explosives are used in all kinds of construction works, in the razing of old buildings, blasting of trenches, driving of tunnels, and in many other instances common to our everyday life. For these reasons explosives are rightfully referred to as the forerunner of progress. An explosive may be defined as a substance (usually a mixture) that, when flame or shock is applied, yields readily to rapid combustion or oxidation, accompanied by the formation of such relatively large quantities of gases as to produce much violence and pressure which, in turn, react against their surroundings and cause what is termed an explosion. By their very nature the action of explosives is destructive and disruptive of adjacent materials. Decomposition of explosives can occur through deflagration, which is rapid burning or combustion, as in the case of black powder, or through detonation, which is an almost instantaneous disruption, as in the case of dynamites and blasting agents.

Borehole (slurry) mining, in which a tool incorporating a water-jet cutter and a downhole slurry pump mines phosphate through a borehole, was field tested in northeastern Florida as part of a Bureau of Mines program to increase the domestic availability of critical minerals. Approximately 1700 tons (1.54x106 kg) of phosphate ore were mined at 40 tph (10.1 kg/s) from a depth of 250 ft (76 m). The borehole was filled with water during mining for roof support and to assist slurry pumping. Underwater cutting was enhanced with an air-shrouded water jet. Mined cavities were backfilled to prevent subsidence after abandonment. Roof subsidence during mining was avoided only when the cavity was filled with water. Environmental monitoring before, during, and after mining included hydrological studies and measurements of water quality. Significant water quality changes occurred only in the zone being mined and were confined to the immediate area of the borehole.

Feeding bulk solids from bins or bunkers sometimes poses a problem to the materials handling engineer. The paper describes, by practical examples, how material flow can be improved on existing installations, and how difficult-to-handle materials can be successfully drawn from storage and fed to fully automated process systems. The examples illustrated are based on actual experience with projects designed for the mining and metallurgical industry. Maintenance costs, where available, are also indicated.

Exploration of the Big Island trona beds by Stauffer Chemical Company started early in 1959. During the intervening time, Stauffer Chemical Company of Wyoming has developed a Large trona mine in this southwestern Wyoming area and has increased the over-all production of soda ash from natural sources by nearly one-half million tons per year. The trona, which is a hydrated sodium bicarbonate mineral, lies some 800 feet into the sedimentary rocks of the Green River formation. Present production is approximately 850,000 tons per year being extracted by means of a room-and-pillar mining system. Conventional coal mining equipment is used with some modification to accommodate local conditions. The mined and crushed ore is hoisted to the surface and processed in an on-site refinery. Refined soda ash is shipped to widely separated locations in covered hopper railraod cars. Construction in progress at Stauffer's plant will double the present capacity.

Coal my not seem like it, but it is a perishable commodity. The basic coal scientist cannot always replicate earlier experiments with a given sample because of changes that have taken place in the sample. This has led to a stated need for stable samples Coal looks like a uniform black solid to many people, but it does vary in its composition from state to state and mine to mine it also can be shown to vary significantly within a mine or seam. These variations have led to a stated need for consistent samples.

Communication about the energy problem has come at us in great profusion during the last couple of years--reports, speeches, editorials, advertisements--and events. Events such as the Arab embargo on oil exports which vividly demonstrated the world's dependence on oil, a finite and nonrenewable resource. And the three-fold increase in the price of oil which provides a constant reminder of the political and economic implications of dependence on foreign oil. A distinction among countries exists today which was almost inconsequential two years ago--the oil exporting nations and the oil consuming nations. The only rational way for the consuming countries to lessen the political and economic clout of the OPEC group is to reduce their dependence on oil. The United States is capable of playing a significant part in such a move for several reasons.
