Production reporting is a natural computer application and is often one of the first applications implemented by new computer users. Automation of a manual reporting system is a good place for new computer users to gain computing experience because generation of basic reports - is fairly straightforward, and automation can often be justified easily on the basis of clerical cost savings. Computers are particularly well-suited for reporting applications which generally satisfy the criteria for effective computerization. Three characteristics must be present to effectively utilize a computerized system: 1) The potential application must be precisely definable. If an algorithm for data processing cannot be developed, data cannot be processed. 2) The operation to be performed must be repetitive. If a particular function is only going to be performed once, computerized systems development is probably not justified. 3) The volume of the data to be processed must be relatively large. If only a few items of data must be manipulated, manual methods are probably adequate. Although a computer can perform only a few functions (it can compute; it can make comparisons; it can rearrange data), it can perform these functions much faster and more accurately than a human being can. The ability to classify and reclassify data in a variety of ways and the ability to summarize data make the computer an ideal tool for production reporting. Production reports can be classified into three major categories, depending on their purpose. Reports can be used for (1) informative, (2) analytical, and (3) control purposes.

Mathematical and expert system models are being used extensively for mineral process engineering. There exist no standardized methodologies for their computer implementation. In meeting this need, this paper introduces the concept of a process software model, or simply a software model and presents a two-step methodology for its development involving software model specification and development. The software model specification is to be performed after extensive discussions with the ultimate users of process software based on which the software model is developed. These software models provide a formal basis for the design and construction of software objects corresponding to the real world process objects.

INTRODUCTION Placer Dome's Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture operation is located some 75 km northeast of Winnemucca, a community in north central Nevada. Formerly known as the Getchell Gold Corporation and First Miss Gold, the operation mines refractory ore from the Getchell and Turquoise Ridge gold deposits located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range above the Kelly Creek Basin in the Potosi Mining District. Mining has been ongoing at Getchell since shortly after its discovery in 1934, and was the nation's second leading producer of gold after Homestake in the early 1940s. Over its history the Getchell property has been mined for gold, tungsten, molybdenum and arsenic; mining methods varied from open pit mining to underground mining; processing options included conventional milling, flotation, roasting, heap leaching, and most recently pressure oxidation followed by CIL (carbon-in-leach). As an historical note, the US Bureau of Mines developed the use of carbon for gold recovery at Getchell during the 1940s (Horton 1999). Placer Dome acquired the property in May 1999. The pressure oxidation plant was mothballed in July 1999 and the property was placed on care and maintenance in February 2002 pending further exploration results. The property is currently ramping up to full production status. A joint venture agreement (75% Placer Dome, 25% Newmont) was established with Newmont Mining in 2003 and ore is processed at their nearby Twin Creeks autoclave plant. Mine dewatering is a key element to success. Arsenic is a ubiquitous mineral in many of the mineralized areas of northern Nevada, necessitating treatment of water prior to re-infiltration.

Early in 1977, Amoco Production Company and Houston Chemicals, a subsidiary of Pittsburg Plate Glass (PPG) Industries, started producing iodine commercially in northwestern Oklahoma. This is significant because it is the first plant in over 40 years to be built in the United States with iodine as its sole commercial product. With the exception of a limited amount of iodine produced by Dow Chemical in Michigan, the United States is dependent upon imports from Chile and Japan for its iodine needs. The two million pounds of iodine produced annually from the Woodward plant will supply over one-third of the United States' requirements. Routine analysis of subsurface brines by the Formation Water Lab at the Amoco Production Company Research Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, revealed unusually high concentrations of certain potentially economic minerals. Investigations determined that, of the minerals in question, iodine appeared to offer the best potential. The brines in question are located in the Morrow sands (basal Pennsylvanian) at a depth of 7,175 to 7.400 feet, in an area where Amoco has been active in a gas play for the past 20 years. The regional iodine concentration ranges from 10 to 700 ppm and averages around 300 ppm with the project area. The project is located 8 miles north and slightly east of the town of Woodward, where the well-developed, porous, and permeable sands of the Woodward trench contain large volumes of brine.

At the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral investigation of about 85,470 acres of the Diablo Mountain Wilderness Study Area, to determine mineral resources and mineral resource potential. The study area is in Lake County Oregon, about 45 miles northwest of Lakeview. Fieldwork was conducted in 1986, 1988, and 1989. Geologically, the study area lies on the northwest edge of the Basin and Range physiographic province, a region of fault block-formed mountains and basins characterized by interior drainage. Consolidated rocks are mostly Tertiary basalt and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. Low-lying areas are covered by Quaternary alluvial-fan, sand-dune, playa, lacustrine, and landslide deposits. The principal structural features are normal faults that have large vertical offsets; these faults are typically concentrated at the margins of large horst and graben. The 34,310-acre "additional," or western part of the area was mainly studied in 1988 and borders the east shore of saline Summer Lake. In this portion of the study area there is potential for undiscovered resources of soda ash, boron compounds, and sodium sulfate as well as by-products, which include magnesium compounds, salts, potash, bromine, lithium, and tungsten associated with brines. No energy or mineral resources were identified in the study area, but brines within lake and playa sediments contain concentrations of chemical components suitable for the production of soda ash, boron compounds, and sodium sulfate. Possible by-products include potash, salts, bromine, lithium, magnesium compounds, and tungsten. Limestone from the study area could be used in the recovery process of brine components or agricultural uses. The study area includes thermal springs and lies within 2 miles of the Summer Lake Known Geothermal Resource Area. Local production of geothermal power by the binary process may be economically feasible. Soda ash, soda ash products, and boric acid are widely used in fluxing metals, and have important applications and markets in the aluminum industry in the northwest and the developing Chinese counterpart. Evaporite commodities are essential to many "backbone" industries, and to many new applications and advanced materials. Markets for brine mineral products appear to be undergoing steady and strong growth, especially in the Pacific Northwest and in Pacific Rim countries. Soda ash produced near the study area would be 55 percent closer by rail to marine export at Portland, Oregon, than trona deposits of the Green River District (Wyoming). Soda ash and a daughter product, caustic soda, and sodium borohydride will receive increased application in the bleaching of paper pulp for environmental reasons. Caustic soda, used in many industrial processes, is more environmentally friendly when derived from soda ash than when produced from sodium chloride salt, because of the absence of a chlorine by-product. Producing soda ash from brines, a type of in situ" mining, can be done with minimal environmental degradation, and mining natural soda ash is environmentally as well as economically preferable to synthetic soda ash production.

Groundwater models are often used to estimate and optimize dewatering volumes, locations, and rates, as well as water supply production for mines. Projections of future dewatering rates are highly dependent on the conceptual model used as a basis for the numerical model. This paper presents an audit of modeled dewatering rates versus actual data and an examination of the reasons for discrepancies. The setting is a gold mine, in a collapsed volcanic crater breached by the ocean. Mining will occur to about 200m below sea level within a remnant geothermal system. A detailed hydrogeologic investigation was conducted to support dewatering and geothermal depressurization design for future mining operations. These studies included development of a three-dimensional model to simulate heat and density-coupled groundwater flow, using software developed by URS/Dames & Moore. In this paper, the groundwater modeling results prepared 5 years previously by others was audited using operational dewatering data. This model was then extended using the new mine schedule and actual locations for dewatering wells to predict future dewatering requirements. In addition, a comparison between “hot” and “cold” model results was used to assess the need to use a heat-coupled versus a standard groundwater model for dewatering predictions.

Horizontal stresses are caused by global plate tectonic forces. During 1995 alone, they were largely responsible for closing two U.S. longwall mines. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Alabama. In each case history, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions in the headgate, caused by horizontal stress concentrations. The problems are detailed, and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble-free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel with the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought, but rather 20° in the stress shadow of the gob. Other stress control techniques, including artificial support, are briefly discussed.

The Andritz Ruthner Inc. hyperbaric filter was evaluated at a pilot scale for dewatering fine coal cleaned by froth flotation. The pilot scale dewatering testing was conducted at a solid feed rate ranging from 100 lbs to 200 lbs/hr-ft2. Effect of hyperbaric operating parameters and addition of various surfactants and flocculants were evaluated on dewatering of fine coal. The tests data indicated that for the minus 100 mesh and minus 28 mesh clean coal product, the Andritz hyperbaric unit provided filter cake containing 23 percent and 14 percent moisture, respectively.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has collected pillar and span data at 34 stone mines in 10 states to develop pillar and roof span design guidelines for underground stone mines. Pillar, floor and roof conditions each contribute significantly to the overall mine stability. The roof may be stable for a century, or it may appear to be stable but fail with little warning. Clearly, an assessment of the mine roof is critical to the safety of these operations. However, up until now, the assessment of the mine roof came primarily from exposures in roof falls or portal areas. This provides only limited information, and a more proactive approach is needed to assess changing mine conditions. A separate effort was undertaken to examine the roof structure with the use of a borescope. Numerous physical and geologic roof structures were observed with a stratascope/borehole video camera. The objective of this work was to develop a technique of assigning numerical values to features seen within the mine roof and apply those values to formulate a roof stability evaluation. Such features as changes in color, grain size, and general lithologies are readily observed. Minor structures in the rock, fossils and fractures are also readily identified. Each feature may have a variable and site-specific impact on roof quality. A number of mines were visited and a series of holes were borescoped in each mine. The features identified in the roof were classified and potential for roof damage related to each feature was assessed. A process is presented that relates the structures and their locations to provide a numerical value, or roof quality index that can be used to assess roof stability.

INTRODUCTION The effectiveness of collector type on sulfide mineral flotation is generally determined by the amount and type of functional groups of collector molecules that interact with surface and water at the mineral/collector/water/gas interface. The final interfacial state when bubble contact takes place is preceded by chemical and physical reactions that involve these gas/liquid/solid interactions. These interactions differ not only for different minerals, solution and gas composition, but also for different collector molecules. The purpose of this paper is primarily to summarize the developments and status of short (C2-C6) and long (C12) chain, aliphatic collectors that contain three sulfur atoms in their polar function. These are trithiocarbonates (TT'Cs). For purposes of comparison, similarities in molecules containing 0, N and S are compared. Mostly short chain ionic collectors molecules of dithiocarbonates (DTCs) and TT'Cs were compared. The studies, largely bench scale flotation and plant testing, were carried out on ores containing Cu, Ni, Au, and PGM's. Studies of long chain 'ITC collectors are reported on Ni, PGM and auriferous pyrite ores containing uranium. Under starvation dosage conditions, surface activity coefficients of short chain collector molecules and interacting water were calculated. INTRODUCTION Today, auxiliary fans, or boosters as they are sometimes called, are commonly used underground to provide ventilation for safe working conditions for personnel. Fans are installed in many ways and for many purposes; however, their use falls into three main categories depending upon the application. Auxiliary Face Ventilation For Coal Mines Usually the application of auxiliary fans underground in coal mines presents problems not normally encountered in other types of mining. Two of the major problems deal with liberation of methane at the coal face and the production of coal dust in the mining process. For these conditions it is necessary to use permissible (explosion-proof) type of equipment. As a result, these fans are discussed in a category by themselves. Auxiliary Fans For Tunnel and Drift Ventilation Tunnels and drifts present unique ventilation requirements. For instance, tunnels and drifts can be developed for considerable distances into virgin territory. Since they are generally dead-ended, the only way to obtain ventilation at the face is to use ventilation pipe to establish one leg of a ventilation circuit. The ventilation of tunnels and drifts therefore falls into another natural category. Other Uses of Auxiliary Fans For Mining Purposes Fans can be applied to mining applications in many ways other than those discussed under the other two categories. For example, many times auxiliary fans can do a much more practical job of proper air control and distribution that can be achieved with any other mechanical means; therefore, these other uses are discussed as a special category. AUXILIARY FACE VENTILATION FOR COAL MINES After 1936, federal and state coal mining laws prohibited the use of auxiliary underground fans in coal mines since such equipment had been widely misused. In certain cases, recirculation of face air had been allowed to occur thereby creating a serious potential explosive hazard by the possible buildup of excessive methane concentrations. By the late 1950s, mining machines with rapid face penetration were commonly being used in coal seams which liberated higher quantities of methane than in earlier years. As a consequence, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the use of auxiliary face fans was again allowed under strict experimental conditions because conventional methods of face ventilation control without fans were becoming inadequate. Today, auxiliary face fans are widely used under strict federal and state control. Such auxiliary ventilation does not reduce the need for the amount of primary air from the main mine fans; however, it does help to distribute primary air more efficiently at the face. The present trend is toward an exhaust system of ventilation utilizing 406- to 610-mm (16- to 24-in.) diam tubing extending from the face to an outby auxiliary fan. Since the tubing is normally applied with negative pressure, spiral wire reinforced tubing has been replaced largely with metal and, more commonly, fiberglass tub¬ing. Additional auxiliary blower units are often used at the mouth of the room being developed, or installed on the miner or loader near the face, depending upon the amount of gas liberation present. Often one (or more) of the fan units is equipped with an integrally mounted hopper and feeder which automatically adds a continuously metered amount of rock dust to the exhaust air. The combination unit tends to make the mixture of discharge particles noncombustible and reduces to some extent the need for additional rock dusting of return airways. In this part of the chapter, typical auxiliary ventilation systems are described including curves and photograph of typical/applicable equipment. Reference will be made to "blowers" and "ex¬hausters." Both are fans and are basically the same units. They take on their name through the manner in which they are used. A blower usually has an inlet bell on the inlet side to help to obtain good air flow into the blades. An exhauster often has a discharge cone added to reduce the discharge loss. Any basic fan unit can be used either as a blower or an exhauster. Description of Auxiliary Ventilation Systems Several auxiliary ventilation systems and modifications of basic systems have evolved over recent years. Bacterial oxidation of a pyrite/ arsenopyritic gold-ore concentrate was carried out with continuous flow operation in 14 liter (1.4x10-2 m3) mechanically agitated reactors. 02 and C02 uptakes were determined at varying residence times. Bacterial concentrations were measured using a protein assay. A sharp optimum in biooxidation rates was observed with increasing steady-state residence times. Growth of the bacteria and biooxidation of the mineral were both shown to be strongly dependent on dissolved 02 levels in the liquor.

The Red River is located within the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range in northern New Mexico. An approximate 12-mile segment of the river from the town of Red River to the village of Questa (Questa) includes several hydrothermal alteration zones. Alteration ?scars? formed as a result of rapid chemical weathering and physical erosion of pyrite-rich hydrothermally altered rocks. Storm water runoff from the scar drainages contributes metal-laden, acidic water to the river and creates a visible plume of discolored water in the river. Acidic runoff reduces the river pH from 7 to the mid 3s for at least 2 hours during large storms and the low pH water continues downstream. Runoff from scar drainages increases some metal concentrations in the river from below chronic ecological criteria to as much as two orders of magnitude greater than acute ecological criteria, and results in acutely toxic conditions for macro-invertebrates. A general improvement in the river?s water quality occurs downstream due to dilution from tributary inflow from non-mineralized watersheds, the natural buffering capacity of the river, and storm water controls at the Chevron Mining Inc. The never-ending quest for gold-bearing ore deposits is a primary industry in Canada, employing people of widely differing expertise. The exploration models for gold deposits are generally geologically complex and the targets have relatively small cross-sectional areas. These problems are compounded in Canada by the minimal outcrop exposure in most mineral provinces and the high percentage of water-covered areas. Naturally the chances of successfully delineating an economic gold deposit are very much greater if all parties involved can act as a team of explorationists constantly confemng amongst themselves particularly as the applicable disciplines generally overlap and complement each other. Three case histories (see Figure 1) are presented to illustrate this philosophy with emphasis placed on the role of the geophysicist in translating the exploration model as defined by the geologist into physically measurable parameters and identifying target areas with similar characteristics. The Conwest-Miminiska property in Ontario is a grassroots exploration play. Additional ore reserves needed to be delineated on the Salmita property in the Northwest Territories. At Laura Lake, near Chapais, Quebec geophysical methods were employed to trace thin high-grade mineral intersections under deep overburden and severe cultural interference.

The effects of postmining land use planning are addressed in this paper. These effects may include savings in reclamation costs and increased value of reclaimed land. However, this may result in greater planning costs and possible delays in production. Therefore, an economic analysis was undertaken in an effort to determine the importance of each potential result and to quantify the overall economic impact of postmining land use planning. A discounted cash flow analysis was performed using a surface mine cost model to analyze the sensitivity of selling price to changes in various postmining land use planning parameters. As a result of this analysis, it was determined that the profitability of a project is most sensitive to delays in production, particularly if the delay occurs after major investments have been made. Many methods have been proposed for evaluating postmining land use alternatives (Sweigard and Ramani, 1981). Both quantitative methods, such as benefit-cost analysis (Brock and Brooks, 1968), and nonquantitative methods have been proposed. The application of one specific analytical method is pursued in this paper.

Faced with decreasing production from the gold heap leach operation, Robinson implemented a drilling and blasting program on the leach pads in 1993. This program offset some of the negative effects of low ore permeability and short circuiting of leach solution that resulted in lower than optimum recoveries. The drilling and blasting program created new solution flow paths and increased gold recovery. Production and pulp assays at depth intervals, prior to and following drilling and blasting, reveal the degree of short circuiting and benefits of the program.

"Underground structures such as square/arch steel sets, king beam structure, etc. are widely used for the roof support in underground mines. In designing and calculating the required carrying capacities of these underground structures, how to identify the potential rock loads on the structures over long term is a challenging question for ground control engineers. Based on design practices of both surface and underground structures, the authors have designed and applied appropriate load factors in underground structural design projects to accommodate different rock types, entry/intersection dimensions, roof geologic conditions, availability of roof bolts and water, etc. Classification of load (reduction) factors for large-span underground intersections are presented for reference. Success of designed underground structures in effectively controlling roof stability over years indicates the applicability of the load factor concept for underground structural design, and its same significance as of the load factor specifications in ASCE/SEI 7-10, ANSI/AWC NDS (2015), and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (2012). The load factor concept will facilitate ground control engineers to appropriately utilize popular structural design software, such as RISA-3D or -2D to efficiently design and analyze underground structures.LOAD FACTORS IN STRUCTURE DESIGN APPLICATIONSIn structures, loads cause stresses, deformations, and displacements. Assessment of their effects is carried out by the methods of structural analysis with the help of load factors. Loads can be increased or decreased by load factors to meet the requirement that design strength be higher than maximum loads. For example, in designing a staircase, a dead load factor may be 1.2 times the weight of the structure, and a live load factor may be 1.6 times the maximum expected live load based on the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method. Commercial software programs are being utilized to create and maintain a mine subsidence database in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of mines research on mine subsidence in Illinois. A three-year survey net of monitored structures in an Illinois subdivision was entered as textual information (attributes), on an existing AutoCAD drawing. These attributes can be optionally displayed on the corresponding drawing or extracted as a text file for import to a database program. The database program, dBASEIV, allows combinations of multiple database files for extensive querying capabilities. Subsurface database files can be merged with surface database files to enhance the effectiveness of surface response analyses in mine subsidence research. The geographic information system (GIS), pcARC/INFO, was chosen to integrate existing AutoCAD drawings and dBASEIV database files into a relational database with a graphical representation. The relational database allows users to update either the graphical representation or the database, with the changes being reflected automatically in its alternate format. The increased capacity, through use of a GIS, to query combinations of database files and have the results reflected graphically has significant potential for expediting mine subsidence research.

A standard procedure for determining size-specific gravity distributions of fine coal (including the -400 mesh fractions) by sieving and centrifugal sink-float separation is described. The significance of using a centrifugal sink-float technique and the effect of the magnitude of the centrifugal force on the separation of fine coal are confirmed in the present study. The relative merits of cumulative versus incremental sink-float are discussed. The procedure is evaluated quantitatively using data obtained for the products of froth flotation of -100 mesh coal.

My first experience with carbon reactivation in the gold industry was at Whim Creek, Meekatharra some 15 years ago. Very little was known, in fact, carbon reactivation kilns in the gold room were a complete mystery. Ten years ago at conferences such as this the mystery was more as to why field kilns would not reproduce activities achieved in the laboratory. A carbon reactivation kiln manufac­turer was thought to be brave or stupid to speak at a venue such as this. Reactivation kiln design has improved dramatically in the past 10 years and with a few exceptions, most kilns operate well. May I suggest that now, the focus is on plant practice rather than kiln design, and that the basics of plant practice as it relates to carbon activity needs revisiting. As metallurgists like to talk on engineering, accountants on the Economy and vice versa, my presentation on Carbon Reactivation will focus on plant design and operation as it effects carbon reactivation. There have been some excellent papers published over the past 15 years on the basics of carbon reactivation in relation to gold processingl,2,}. Taken that kilns operate and are effective to a greater or lesser degree, plant design and operating practise have an enormous bearing on carbon activity, solution tail, carbon loss and other cost items. This presentation will not argue the merits of equipment used for the thermal reactivation of organically fouled carbon, questions on this subject are welcome over a drink after this session.
