Beginning in 1987, miniature dataloggers approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) were publicly available for sale. The principal among these was the model CR21XQM, manufactured by Campbell Scientific, Inc. These dataloggers had been tested and were deemed permissible by MSHA and thus could be installed in the return air of an underground coal mine. In 1996, production of all permissible Campbell Scientific dataloggers ceased due to lack of sales. Data collection with these dataloggers has been a staple of ground control research in the United States for decades, and, without them, or a replacement, the capability to monitor ground behavior is severely impacted. Since that time, any party requiring a permissible datalogger has needed to borrow one that was purchased during the production years. In order to fill this technology gap and ensure its own data-gathering capabilities, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed and refined its own miniature data acquisition system (MIDAS). On February 16, 2010, MSHA deemed the MIDAS to be permissible and approved it for use in the return air of an underground coal mine. The MIDAS is an intrinsically safe, 16- or 24-bit datalogger, compatible with a wide range of resistive, single-ended, and differential-type instrumentation. It contains enough data storage memory to operate for over a year with typical data rates and is efficient enough to do this on a single C-sized alkaline battery for that entire period. It is menu-driven and requires no programming knowledge to operate. It supports wireless or hardwired communication for datalogger setup and data download. This paper describes the design, field and laboratory testing, and capabilities of the MIDAS datalogger. While not as fully -functioned as the CR21XQM, it is the only new permissible datalogger available, and there is intent to make it available to the mining industry for purchase.

Theory pertaining to the exchangeability of fuel gases on appliances has been extended to exchanges of propane or butane with mixtures of these. In particular, new considerations were developed bearing on the hazard of an occasional emission of carbon monoxide and flashback and blowoff possibilities. The new considerations involve using current requirements for approval of liquefied petroleum gas appliances. These requirements were used to predict allowable tolerances in chemical composition of liquefied petroleum gases for existing appliances. Recent data indicate a marginal decline in overall growth in world economic output from 3.1% in 1985 to 2.9% in 1986 (table 1),2, 3 Many nations experienced slower economic growth because of the huge trade imbalances existing between the United [ ] States and Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany, the U.S. budget deficit, and the growing Third World debt. Some developing nations, however, experienced booming growth. Declining prices for energy and nonenergy commodities and the fall of the dollar against the currencies of major industrial countries benefited several developing countries--energy importers and exporters of manufactured goods with currencies tied to the U.S. dollar, which were able to expand markets in the industrialized nations. The drop in commodity prices increased demand in industrial countries and depressed it in developing countries. Lower demand in the developing countries contributed to a decline in the real net exports from industrial countries. As a result, output growth in industrial countries declined from 3.0% in 1985 to 2.4% in 1986, despite growing internal demand, Average output growth of developing countries increased from 3.296 to 3.596 during the same period, however, primarily because of the low prices of their products and the strength of demand in industrial countries for those products. Developed country output growth was extremely uneven, however. For example, the economic output of nonfuel exporters grew 5.4% in 1986, while that of fuel exporters dropped 0.7%.

"The estimate and control of sampling errors is essential for all mining operations, especially when dealing with strategic materials, such as niobium. This paper is based on a traditional quality assurance and quality control technique used to confirm mineralised intersection zones, and proposes the validation of sampling data using diamond drill twin holes, in order to evaluate and improve the quality of the current data set. The geological model of the niobium mine – located in Araxá, Minas Gerais, Brazil – was built including 77 diamond drill holes of a sampling campaign carried out during the 1970s. There are few records about the collection and preparation procedures of these past samples, making it difficult to estimate the errors associated with their analytical results. Therefore, 11 twin drill holes were drilled to compare their samples against the samples from the 1970s drilling campaign. The new hole locations were chosen as near as possible to the old holes location. The JORC Code, 2012 edition, relates the use of twin holes as a good sampling technique to assess sampling and assay data. Three parameters were considered to validate the 1970s drill hole campaign by the twin drill hole campaign: the difference of the coordinates between the paired holes the difference among the positions of the geological contacts to validate the geologic description the difference between the paired samples grades was calculated to validate the analytical results.The analysis of the grade range variation between sample pairs was based on three techniques: geostatistical interpretation of vertical semivariogram to obtain the nugget effect calculation of the relative difference between duplicates calculation of the error associated with the sampling protocol established according to Pierre Gy’s Theory of Sampling.The results were satisfactory for hole coordinates; however, the ore content showed a high deviation, although this divergence can be explained by the nugget effect. For the lithological intervals, the new results contributed to an effective identification of variations among lithologies, ie brown weathered ore and saprolite. The perforating of multiple tubingless completions, in which two or more strings of 27/8-in. OD casing are installed in the same borehole, presents two basic problems. First, good completion practices require an eficient perforator that leaves no debris to interfere with subsequent completion operations. Second, and of more complicated nature, a system is needed for controlling the direction of fire so that adjacent strings are not damaged. Development of of a 2-in. OD, steel retrievable, shnped-charge gun has solved the first problem. The second was resolved through development of three different devices to provide directional perforating for the two types of completion methods being employed today. These include a mechanical orienting device and two self-orienting radiation devices. Conceivably, the latter methods could be adapted to the directional perforating (of .upper zones) of conventional dual and triple completions without removing production tubing and packers. INTRODUCTION The recent trend to multiple tubingless completions,' wherein two or more strings of 27/8-in. OD casing are installed in the same borehole, has presented two basic perforating problems. The first problem to be overcome was the design of a gun that would result in efficient perforations without causing debris to bridge in these small-diameter casings. The second problem was, of course, to devise a system for controlling the direction of fire such that adjacent strings would not be damaged. The problem of gun debris in slim-casing completions has been well defined in the numerous 27/8-in. single tubingless completions which have been effected during recent years with the expendable-type perforators. Failure of expendable-gun debris to settle out properly, even with good gun break-up, has resulted in bridging inside these small-diameter casings. This, in turn, has interfered with completion and re-conditioning operations. The past two years have clearly shown, in fact, that debris problems are not confined to this small range of casing with most designs of expendable-type guns. A high incidence of bridging has even been reported in 4%-in. OD casing. The perforating of multiple tubingless completions has entailed, therefore, the development of a completely debris-free gun of adequate performance, as well as the necessary devices to provide positive directional perforating in the two completion methods presently being employed. THE GUN —DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS The design of a shaped-charge gun for slim-casing perforating has presented a maze of interrelated prob-lems. Since the primary specification has been leveled at efficient charge performance with complete elimination of gun debris, it has been necessary to develop a retrievable steel-carrier gun of tubular construction to house the charges. The carrier must be retrievable through 2.29-in. API pump-seating nipples which are usually installed in 2 7/8-in. strings. To provide for recovery of the gun from the well, swelling of the carrier on firing must be carefully controlled. Control of swelling automatically means control of explosive weight in the shaped charge which, in turn, influences charge performance. Carrier swelling also depends upon the confinement pressure at the level being perforated, which imposes a hydrostatic pressure-depth limitation. Burr interference on the wall of the carrier, resulting from passage of the jet through the carrier wall, must be eliminated by suitable design. Clearly then, a satisfactory shaped-charge gun design for slim-casing operations represents a fine balance between carrier swelling, hydrostatic pressure, explosive weight and charge performance. A mineral and chemical characterisation study was conducted on ilmenite-rich heavy mineral concentrates sourced from the western sector of the Eucla Basin in southern Australia. Test work involved using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron microprobe-based characterisation methods. Results showed considerable variability in the degree of ilmenite alteration between deposits with TiO2 contents varying from 53 - 63 wt per cent TiO2. Notwithstanding variability between individual deposits, the samples all had [Ti]/[Ti+Fe] ratios >0.5 consistent with a mineral assemblage of hydrated ilmenite or the hydrated, Ti-rich alteration phase pseudorutile (Fe3+2-x Ti3O9-3x (OH)3x). Accessory phases consisted of rutile (primary and secondary), zircon, aluminosilicates, quartz, Fe oxyhydroxides and spinels. Results for the most altered material are broadly comparable with data for ilmenite concentrates from the eastern margin of the basin. The mineralogy of the western Eucla Basin concentrates and the minor element composition of the ilmenite grains suggest they could be upgraded to synthetic rutile by a modified Becher process.

A model for the leaching of oxide ores is developed and II correlated with laboratory tests for percolation leaching of copper oxide are. Using the model, recovery of metal values and lixiviant concentration of the effluent solution at any time may be evaluated. For the copper oxide ore a simplified version of the model is examined for the leaching mechanism consisting of: 1) a surface flush reaction with the highest rate of lixiviant consumption; 2) penetration of lixiviant to react with copper minerals and gangue constituents; and, 3) slow lixiviant consumption, mostly by residual gangue materials. The simplified model is able to explain reasonably the leaching behavior of copper oxide ore by introducing a concept of effective initial size to correct for packing in a bed of fine particles.

"The possibilities of expanding the production rate from the Copper Mountain Mine have been examined using computer programs for analysing a complete range of data, beginning with the diamond drill assays and embracing all steps up to the final rates of return.Programs have been developed to calculate the mineralization inventory file, a matrix of blocks containing the grade and the type of mineralization estimated for each block. Given the topography, prices of metals and costs, the pit limits are optimized using a three-dimensional technique. Within the pit, ore reserves at any cutoff can be calculated. Mining of the pit is then simulated using an interactive production scheduling program on a timesharing computer. The annual tonnage and grade figures from the production schedule are input to a financial analysis program, where the present value and the rate of return are calculated at various metal prices. The expansion possibilities can be run through the programs with their respective costs, and evaluated using the rate of return on the marginal cash flow compared to the additional capital expenditure."

A novel electrically-enhanced metal purification using slag has been developed. This was achieved by applying DC potential between liquid metal and slag phases. The concept was demonstrated through small-scale experiments at temperatures of 1500-1600oC for the removal of boron from Si-B melt using CaO-SiO2-16wt%Al2O3. Silicon (containing B) and slag were reacted in an alumina crucible in a resistance tube furnace. A circuit was produced by immersing graphite rods into the silicon bath and the slag layer. Electrical potential differences of up to 3.5 V were applied during the reactions. The reaction rates, the opencircuit voltages and short-circuit currents (in the case when the potential was applied) were then measured and determined for various slag to silicon ratio. It has been shown from this study that both the apparent rate and the boron partition ratio were increased by a factor of approximately 1.6.

Adequate load transfer is considered essential for optimum ground support and is increasingly important in weak roof and/or high stress environments. If adequate load transfer is achieved not only can this have a positive impact on the resulting roof behavior, but it may also allow the use of lower and hence more economic densities of roof support. A wide variety of post-groutable cable bolts are currently in use in the Australian coal mining industry, each of varying capacity, design, and grouting methodology. Though all of the cables are supplied with the appropriate steel specification, strength, and modulus data, the Australian coal mining industry does not have access to a comprehensive and comparative database on the corresponding load transfer performance, which is a critical problem. On the basis of the above, this paper describes the methodology and results of a laboratory pull testing program that aims to assess the impact of cable bolt design on load transfer, and specifically, the impact on the capacity and stiffness of the anchorage. As part of the testing program, 19 cables were tested including (1) plain-strand cables installed in holes drilled with 28 to 55 mm diameter drill bits and (2) bulbed and nutcaged cables installed in holes drilled with 42 to 64 mm diameter drill bits. Other parameters assessed included the significance of smooth and profiled wire, wire packing, and expanded geometry bulbs. The main results of the testing indicate that in comparison to plain-strand cables, if the cable is bulbed or nutcaged, the capacity of the anchor can increase by up to 400%, and the peak stiffness by between one and two orders of magnitude. The results also indicate that increasing hole diameter may have a positive impact on load transfer in the case of bulbed or nutcaged cables and a negative impact on plain-strand cables. No conclusive results were obtained with regard to the impact of grout strength on load transfer.

Even though miners’ health and safety has improved over the years, mining is still one of the most dangerous occupations. Mining was traditionally a low tech industry. It is now driven by competitive pressures to go high-tech by using programmable electronics (PE) for machine control, atmospheric monitoring and material processing. The industry’s experience with the functional safety of PE is limited compared with other industries. Thus, PE is an emerging technology for mining that can potentially create or worsen hazards.

This project was initiated on October 1, 1980 and will be completed on December 31, 1983. The project was Initially approved and funded by the Office of Surface Mining and subsequently was moved to the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Mines. It was administered through the Indiana Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute. The research was done to assess reforestation success and ultimate productivity for areas reclaimed under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (P.L. 95-87). The Permanent Regulatory Program for implementation of P.L. 95-87 Includes provisions for revegetation that require seeding of ground cover plants to control erosion until permanent vegetation such as tree species Is established, and restoration of mined land to its original or better productivity. Much of the land to be surface-mined presently supports forest cover and it is anticipated that reconstructed minesoils will exhibit high productive potential for hardwood tree species. Hence, information was needed on compatibility of ground cover and tree seedlings when established concurrently as well as on revegetation success under postmining versus premining conditions.

"The recovery of manganese from the Boleo project of Baja Mining is via an acid oxidation and acid reduction process in seawater. Manganese as manganese dioxide is leached into solution as manganese sulphate with the addition of sulphur dioxide gas as a reductant and then precipitated as a manganese carbonate. The use of the manganese carbonate intermediate to produce electrolytic manganese metal (EMM) has been extensively studied. The manganese carbonate can be used in place of natural (MnC03) or reduced ores (MnO) of manganese as a feed to the EMM plant. Manganese carbonate can be dissolved in spent electrolyte from manganese plating, followed by purification using ammonium sulphide precipitation of minor elements and then electrowinning in a selenium free process. The results of small cell testing of manganese electrowinning are reported.IntroductionThe Boleo Project of Baja Mining is a greenfields development currently under construction approximately 5 km north of the town of Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The Boleo property is held by the Mexican company, Minera y Metalurgica del Boleo S.A. de C. V. (MMB). MMB is owned 70% by Baja Mining Corp. and 30% by a consortium of Korean companies consisting of KORES - Korea Resources Corporation, LS Nikko Copper, Hyundai Hysco, SK Networks and lljin Copper.The Boleo deposit has Measured and Indicated resources of264.7 million tonnes grading 1.50% copper equivalent (CuEq) & Inferred resources of 159.9 million tonnes grading 1.15% CuEq. The calculation of copper equivalent is based on a combination of metal prices and predicted metallurgical recoveries (Table I). The metallurgical recoveries have been confined by extensive bench and pilot plant testing. Proven and probable reserves are available at Boleo to provide for more than a 30 year mine life. A variety of carbonaceous reducing materials are being used for the production of ferroalloys. Reductant materials include not just carbons such as coke, coal, char but also bio-carbons in form of charcoal produced from different types of wood. This paper discusses critical properties and reactions of carbonaceous materials and their significance in dictating reductant performance. Main considerations include among others, gasification of reductant, dissolution of carbon into molten metal, and direct reduction of slag by solid carbon. These are discussed in relation to material properties such as structural order, mineral matter content, composition, physical characteristics etc. A brief review of both conventional and novel approaches towards characterisation of carbonaceous materials has been included. Due to complexity and heterogeneity of carbonaceous reducing materials and a wide range of process requirements, the selection of the most appropriate reducing agent will depend on a number of considerations such as the availability of raw material and associated costs, product and process requirements and environmental aspects of waste gas emissions.

The flotation performance of 2-(benzylthio)-acetohydroxamic acid (BTHA) to diaspore was first evaluated by micro-flotation tests. The adsorption mechanism was further investigated through adsorption experiments, molecular dynamics simulation, zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results demonstrated that BTHA had a stronger ability to collect diaspore in comparison with another diaspore collector, benzohydroxamic acid (BHA), especially under the condition of weak alkalinity, the flotation recovery can reach 90%. The more negative interaction energy (ΔE) between BTHA and diaspore from molecular dynamics simulation results revealed that BTHA had an easier adsorption ablity onto diaspore than BHA, which matched with adsorption results. Keywords: accurate control, matte level, smelting operations, process control, tapping, sounding bar, electromagnetic measurement [ ] Accurate control of matte levels during primary matte smelting operations is desirable in order to improve process decision-making. High matte levels in the vessel could have to disastrous consequences, particularly in the new generation of intensive smelting furnace with deep-cooled copper coolers. Knowing when to commence tapping and a better understanding of melt times can only be improved if the furnace levels are monitored correctly. At Lonmin Marikana Smelter Division it has long been understood that the matte level information being provided by the manual sounding bar is only as good as the operators? following of measurement procedure, their skill in assessing what the sounding bar is displaying, and their individual interpretation of what they are looking at. This paper sets out to show how this problem was identified as an area of major concern to the plant, how a solution was sought and how an electromagnetic measurement system was installed as an alternative measurement to the matte sounding bar system. Other areas discussed in the paper are the difficulties to be overcome when first installing new equipment and how these teething problems were solved by close co-operation between Lonmin and equipment suppliers, which led to some design modifications to the delivery system. In conclusion the paper discusses the results between the electromagnetic measurement and the manual sounding measurement and how best to integrate the generated data into the plant?s process control system for improved decision making.

A general discussion of the structure of the junk automobile recycling system shows that the generation of stripped automobile hulks and scrapped automobiles is price inelastic. As a result, it is extremely difficult for the price mechanism to automatically achieve an equilibrium that will prevent the accumulation of excessive automobile wrecker inventories and vehicle abandonment by the last owners of scrapped cars. The new shredder processing technology and the new portable flattener technology have altered the structure of the junk automobile recycling system. The shredder technology has increased the demand for processed automobile scrap. This increased demand is reflected in higher prices paid for hulks by scrap processors. The portable flattener has reduced the transportation cost of shipping hulks to processors. The two new technologies have eliminated, at least potentially, the net cost of shipping stripped hulks so frequently incurred by wreckers in the past. The elimination of this cost eliminates the economic incentive for excessive wrecker inventories. Unfortunately, the incentive for last owners to abandon their cars does not appear to have been eliminated by the new technologies. The last owner of an automobile with no spare parts value is still likely to incur a cost by delivering his automobile to the recycling system. Although a subsidy payment is probably unnecessary to reduce excessive wrecker inventories, such a payment might be one solution to the problem of automobile abandonment. However, there are a wide variety of subsidy programs that could be introduced. Before any Federal subsidy program is introduced to reduce automobile abandonment, it is recommended that the program be tested on a limited basis in many different parts of the country.

Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900 and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at lowpO2s and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2=1*10-6atm at 1200and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200 and 1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by Fact Sage with a thermodynamically optimized database have been compared with the experimental results.
