The U.S. Bureau of Mimes evaluated the effects of two iron-based fuel additives on diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions. The 5.6-L, six-cylinder test engine is typical of engines used in underground mines. One additive, ferrous picrate, did not measurably affect exhaust emissions. This report is mainly about a ferrocene-based additive that reduced DPM between 4 and 45 pct, depending on engine operating conditions. The report concludes that the DPM reductions were caused by the catalytic oxidation properties of a ferric oxide coating that developed inside the engine's combustion chamber. The ferric oxide coating also decreased gas-phase hydrocarbons and O, but it increased CO, and NO,. The increase in NO,, of about 12 pct, is considered the only adverse effect of the ferrocene-based fuel additive. The results suggest that the effectiveness of ferrocene was partially offset by increased sulfates because of the high-sulfur fuel used. Recommendations for continuing fuel additive research are presented.

TowerMill - Advantages in Wet Grinding Applications The TowerMill, which has now been in existence for no less than 50 years, is one alternative to the horizontal ball mill and offers several advantages. The TowerMill is widely used in (coal-fired) electric power plants for the grinding of raw material for the FGD (Flue Gas Desulphurisation) process involving very high throughputs, very fine product sizes and high availability. Some companies in the mining industry also looked at the use of such optimised grinding machines several years ago and found that many of the advantages offered in other industries are transferable to new applications. Much development work has been undertaken to improve the TowerMill for new applications and, as part of that work, tests have also been conducted to make direct comparisons of their performance with that of ball mills. Grinding tests were performed using the same raw materials and comparable machine sizes. Some of the results are discussed in this paper, along with a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages. The conclusion provides an outlook for some worthwhile future applications. The test results, which are described and analysed, show that the TowerMill offers significant advantages in relation to operating costs and operational safety. An example based on the wet grinding of limestone is presented.

"The ninth yearly National Safety Competition covering the calendar year 1933, conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, w participated in by 332 mines and quarries situated in 35 States. Enrollment represented as increase of 10 plants over 1932, and one addition was made to the number of States represented.The primary purpose of the United. States Bureau of Mines in conducting the contest is to promote safety in United States mineral industries. This purpose is accomplished directly through the efforts of the competing companies and their employees to win first place in the competition and thereupon receive recognition on a national scale for their achievement the purpose is accomplished indirectly through studies by the United States Bureau of Mines of the facts contained in the accident reports the competing companies furnish to enable the Bureau to compute the accident rates that are the basis for determining the winners of the contest.The statistics which constitute the basis for determining the winning companies and the relative standing of all companies are prepared uniformly without regard to the States in which the companies operate, or to differences in classes of accidents covered by State laws relating to compensation for injuries resulting, from industrial accidents.Bronze trophies, known as 'Sentinels of Safety', which were provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines, were presented to five companies in the contest of 1933, each company having established the best accident-prevention record within one of the five classes into which all companies were divided, namely, anthracite-mining companies, bituminous-coal-mining companies, metal-mining companies, operators of nonmetallic-mineral mines other than coal mines, and quarries or opencut mines. The trophies are awarded for 1 year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The trophy for bituincus-coal mines was won by a company in Wyoming. A company in Tennessee won the trophy for metal mining. In the nonmetal-mine group the trophy was again won by a company in New York. A quarry in Michigan won the trophy for the quarry-and-opencut-mine group. The trophy for anthracite mines remains in Pennsylvania, as all anthracite mines in the contest are in that State."

A energia elétrica é uma das formas de energia mais utilizadas pela sociedade. Com a modernização dos meios de produção e o aumento populacional, a sua demanda cresce cada vez mais. Por este motivo, existe uma grande necessidade de fazer o transporte dessa energia de forma eficiente. O desenvolvimento de novos materiais para serem utilizados como cabos de transmissão e distribuição é de suma importância. O presente trabalho visa estudar a liga de alumínio Al-0,05%Cu-0,40%Fe-0,30%Si-0,22%Zr para transmissão de energia elétrica. A liga foi obtida por fundição direta em lingoteira metálica em formato de "U". As pernas correspondentes ao perfil foram seccionadas, usinadas e separadas em dois grupos, o primeiro sem tratamento térmico e o segundo com tratamento térmico. Após esta etapa os corpos de prova foram submetidas ao processo de laminação a frio para os diâmetros de [2,7; 3,0; 3,8 e 4,0] mm e encaminhados para a caracterização elétrica e mecânica. Verifica-se que o tratamento térmico de 150ºC/2h melhorou a condutividade elétrica para o diâmetro de 3,0 mm. Após a aplicação dos testes de termorresistividade para o diâmetro de 3,0 mm, constata-se que para ambas as orientações, tanto a liga sem quanto com tratamento térmico se enquadram como termorresistentes..

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 in New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be widespread through much of the Tasman fold belts of Eastern Australia. Production is estimated to be some 500,000 carats from several small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration, though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond content has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia during the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives. Of those, 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe, however, the 1200 Ma high-grade Argyle lamproite and associated nearby alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable. Its current annual production is 40 million carats valued at about US$400 million. Production from the open pit will be sustainable until at least 2003.

The Canadian Rare Earth Elements Network (CREEN) was formally launched at the Rare Earth Symposium at The Metallurgy and Materials Society of CIM (MetSoc) Conference of Metallurgists in October 2013. CREEN is an industry-led, multi-stakeholder network focused on providing collaborative solutions that will advance Canada’s REE sector to produce a significant proportion of the global production of separated critical rare earth products by 2018. The Network is industry driven by companies with REE projects under development and supported by universities, engineering firms, national and commercial laboratories, and government. CREEN aims to accelerate the development and delivery of timely solutions to technical and economic issues specifically facing Canada’s emerging rare earth sector. It will facilitate partnerships with other national and international organizations to leverage existing research initiatives. It will also support training and education to ensure that the needed qualified human resources are available to achieve the sector’s goals. CREEN membership spans the full rare earth supply chain and technical support organizations, from prospective producers, advanced project developers, national and commercial laboratories, engineering consultants, university researchers, and other innovators. Several shear failures were observed in Shaft #1 at the Mountain Coal Company, LLC, West Elk Mine, after mining longwall Panel 23, 1,100 ft to the east of Shaft #1. It was speculated that this shear damage could be related to differential ground movement caused by in situ stress relief from the ?stress shadow? of the caved zone above longwall Panel 23. A numerical study was conducted to assess the possibility of the shaft shear damage being caused by in situ stress relief and the potential for additional damage to Shaft #1 and two other nearby shafts, due to mining nearby longwall Panel 24. Three-dimensional (3D) models were built in FLAC3D to simulate past and future mining near shafts, the estimated local anisotropic and directional horizontal stresses, and the overlying variable surface topography. The numerical analyses indicated that stress relief due to mining Panel 23 caused the shear damage to Shaft #1and that additional damage to Shaft #1 and the other two shafts, would likely result from mining longwall Panel 24. Additional shear damage was documented in Shaft #1 when longwall Panel 24 was mined, confirming the results of the numerical analyses.

O presente trabalho compreende um estudo sobre os processos de moagem e tratamento térmico de pelotas no que tange as implicações microestruturais de minério de ferro no controle operacional e redução de consumos de energias térmica e elétrica de uma planta de pelotização. As características físicas, microestruturais e mineralógicas foram determinadas para os produtos de minério de ferro, para matriz de experimentos (misturas) e para as pelotas tratadas com auxílio de um microscópio óptico, um eletrônico e um EBSD. Os resultados permitiram confirmar a relação entre as composições morfológicas com a elevação de produção da moagem (14,1%) e redução do consumo de energia elétrica (12,0%). O controle do perfil térmico de endurecimento foi relacionado com as condições de sinterização (grau de maturação) das pelotas submetidas e as fases microestruturais identificadas. Foi evidenciada relação inversa entre o teor de magnetita na mistura com o consumo de energia térmica. Os resultados de resistência à compressão também sugerem uma relação inversa com os teores de fayalita e magnetita não oxidada, porosidade e grau de maturação. Adicionalmente, os resultados proporcionaram ajustes industriais que confirmaram essa relação com a redução da energia térmica aplicada para produção (10,7%).

McLanahan RSS14x50 scrubber screens have individually processed over 50 Mt of Pilbara iron ore. The first stage of separation in these plants with abrasive, high specific gravity, large lumps is an extremely arduous duty with high wear rates. With the Scrubber Screen layout this occurs in the attached trommel section. The initial supply of the replaceable trommel panels were of steel-backed rubber with a service life of approx. six weeks. Site Personnel established a goal of 26 week wear life in conjunction with 100 per cent reliability and while field trials were undertaken using a variety of hardened and cast steels that demonstrated wear life to the nominated requirement some unpredicted failures still occurred. With a long evaluation time and challenges to create repeatable conditions with field testing, a purpose built test unit was designed and constructed to allow controlled evaluation of a number of materials and designs. During 2016 tests were conducted with eight different materials, of varying thickness to simulate impact conditions and a number of aperture profiles to evaluate both impact and abrasion effects. From these results two designs were selected for full scale implementation to confirm the nominated goals. Pilot plant tests of underground gold leaching from Maminskoye deposit oxide ores at a grade of 0,7 g/t Au were carried out. The underground leaching flow sheet includes Au dissolution by chlorine-containing solutions, Au adsorption from solution on active carbon, carbon concentrate ashing and calcine melting to produce high grade gold concentrate. The underground leaching system throughput was 15 m3 of solution per hour. Gold concentration in pregnant solutions was 0.12-0.13 mg/l. Gold recovery from solutions into carbon was in the range of 63-84%. It was demonstrated that the low Au recovery in the adsorption cycle was due to the presence in pregnant solutions of "active" chlorine, which destroys active carbon and causes a sharp decrease of the carbon loading capacity for gold. To improve the adsorption indices, previously dechlorinated pregnant solutions using bituminous coal or Na2S2O3, is recommended. Ion exchange process was tested as an alternative for gold extraction from dechlorinated solutions. In the testwork period, 4.4 kg of gold were produced with a chlorine consumption of 3.5 kg per 1 g of gold. During the tests a program of environmental protection measures was completed to provide the necessary safety precautions of the underground leaching works.

A strategy for prioritizing mining health and safety research by evaluating the potential for risk reduction through interventions is proposed. Mining has one of the highest incidence rates of injury and disease found in major industries. The main premise of this paper is that often the best opportunities to reduce these rates are not revealed by retrospective analysis of injury and illness data. Instead, a proactive approach is needed that accounts for risks to specific hazards that can be abated by engineering or behavioral interventions. The process proposed here begins with development of prospective interventions. The degree of reduction in risk to be expected from an intervention then is determined from statistics on the mining worker population, the expected degree of success of the intervention, and the expected change in the severity of injuries resulting from the intervention. Three disparate mining health and safety concerns are presented to demonstrate common problems in assessing risks of injury and illness and describe additional data needs. Information on events preceding injuries and illnesses and more detailed demographic data on the mining work force are needed to analyze injury and illness data more precisely. Detailed information on exposure to specific hazards is necessary to evaluate the potential for an intervention to reduce risk of injury or illness.

In open pit mine planning and design, push back mine sequencing is widely used for long-term production planning. In push back design, a series of nested pits is generated and then considered as possible push backs with regard to the minimum push back width requirements. These nested pits are produced by parameterizing on one economic parameters like commodity price, mining or processing cost, stripping ratio etc. The most important characterization of these push backs is that the inner most push back has the highest value per ton, the second inner most push back has the second highest value per ton and so on. These nested pits are generated based on the best estimates of grade within a representation of the ore body in a three dimensional matrix form. Therefore, the inherent uncertainty associated with reserve estimation (for our discussion grade uncertainty) is not taken into account when push backs are designed. These methods do not attempt to establish which part of the deposit is likely to be worth most. This paper introduced a new algorithm that incorporates ore grade uncertainty during push back design process. The suggested strategy tries to seek to schedule risky blocks later in the extraction sequence.

ThE thermodynamic activities of nickel and chromium in liquid Ni-Cr alloys have not been previously reported. There have been several investigations on the solid alloys.1-3 In the present investigation the activity of chromium in liquid Ni-Cr alloys at 1600° C was determined by the use of the following galvanic cell, The use of galvanic cells employing solid oxide electrolytes for determining the activity of metals in solid alloys was first demonstrated by Rapp and Maak4 on Cu-Ni alloys between 700° and 1000°C. Recently Schwerdtfeger5 tested the performance of the ZrO2(CaO) electrolyte at 1600°C and found it satisfactory for oxygen pressures as low as 10"12 atm. He also demonstrated the use of solid oxide electrolytes for determining the activities in liquid metal systems in measuring the activity of manganese in Fe-Mn alloys at 1500°C. Extensive investigations have been carried out in this laboratory, exploring the oxygen partial pressure lower limit at which ZrO2(CaO) electrolyte can be used satisfactorily in oxygen galvanic cells at 1600°C. In a paper to be published at a later date,9 it is demonstrated conclusively that ZrO2(CaO) exhibits insignificant electronic conductivity at oxygen pressures down to about 3 x 10"13 atm which is lower than the oxygen partial pressure in equilibrium with Cr-Cr2O3 at 1600°C. Therefore, the activity of chromium can be related to the measured reversible electromotive force of the cell in the present investigation since no electronic short circulating will occur. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the cell used. The Cr-Cr2O3 electrode was made of equal weights of chromium and Cr2O3 powders which were mixed and packed into a recrystallized alumina crucible. A Pt-wire lead was embedded into the Cr-Cr2O3 compact to insure good contact. A ZrO2(CaO) crucible, supplied by the Zirconium Corp. of America, contained the Ni-Cr melt equilibrated with solid Cr2O3. The ZrO2(CaO) crucible was placed on the Cr-Cr2O3 electrode and additional Cr-Cr2O3 mixture was packed around it. Contact with the Ni-Cr alloy was made with a Cr2O3 tube, which is a weak electronic conductor. A platinum wire lead was attached to the Cr2O3 tube. The galvanic cell was lowered slowly into the hot zone of the furnace tube in order to avoid too large a thermal shock which could break the ZrO2 (CaO) crucible. The furnace was con- tinuously flushed with purified argon during the experiment. The temperature was measured with a Pt-Pt/10 pet Rh thermocouple and maintained at 1600° ± 5°C. The electromotive force was measured with a recording potentiometer. The furnace was turned off when measurements were being made in order to avoid induction effects and the reversibility of the cell was demonstrated in the usual manner. The electromotive force was measured several times over a period of approximately 1 hr. During that period the electromotive force remained constant within ± 3 pet and did not continuously drift in any one direction. After the experiment the alloys were analyzed for chromium in the usual manner. The measured electromotive forces of the cell at 1600°C, (2912°F), are listed in Table I. The activity of chromium, with solid pure chromium as the reference state, (a), was calculated using Eq. [l], , n F E I, n lna RT- U] where E is the measured electromotive force, F is the Faraday constant, and n is equal to 3, the number of equivalents per mole, (nF/RT = 18.59 volts'1 at 1600°C). Sustainability of energy supplies has been an issue of general interest for a long time. Whilst in the past the continuous productive use of natural commodities was in the fore, its compatibility with the environment and climate and ultimately also social aspects have recently gained more and more attention. Today many discussions focus on the climate compatibility of individual options to act. Fossil fuels, in particular coal and lignite, are generally challenged because coal use makes a significant contribution to global man-made CO2 emissions. The drastic increase in the consumption of fossil fuels is not explained by the fact that coal utilisation technologies are not or cannot be sustainable but rather by the growing world population and the endeavours numerous national economies trying to catch up economically. Coal is the world’s No. 1 fuel and, in the view of many experts, will keep this position also in the foreseeable future. The access to its deposits plays a significant role for the economies of the emerging countries. Consequently the aspects of energy security and economic efficiency need to be considered at eye level with climate compatibility. In Germany, however, the public acceptance of fossil fuels and of large industrial projects is in the focus of attention.

Lonmin, earlier than any other primary platinum producer, had to deal with the concentrating and smelting of UG2-rich ores and concentrates respectively. Smelting was performed at a fairly modest scale compared to the company's industry peers in the platinum group metals (PGMs) industry, and was focused on smelting concentrates obtained through low mass pulls while still maintaining high recoveries at its concentrators. Lonmin gradually smelted larger quantities of UG2 concentrates. Initially two 2.3 MW Infurnco furnaces were commissioned in 1982, followed by three 5 MW circular 3-electrode Pyromet furnaces in 1991. Deep electrode immersions and moderately high hearth power densities were used in all the designs. Lonmin decided to continue with circular furnace technology when it planned its new high-intensity No. 1 Furnace. Neither Lonmin nor the technology supplier and EPCM company foresaw the challenges that scale-up would bring when applied to the smelting of UG2-rich concentrate blends. Superimposed on the high chromite content, was the low base-metal loading, mineralogical difficulties, and fine particle size that resulted from milling of all concentrates (especially UG2 and recycle materials within the smelter). Through a process of fundamental diagnoses of furnace run-outs and wear patterns observed during repairs, the main challenges operating this high-intensity furnace were identified as sulphur vapour corrosion of the copper coolers, uneven and unpredicted movements of refractory bricks with associated copper cooler lift and matte tapblock movement, the formation of three-phase 'mushy' zones, high refractory and taphole wear rates, uncertainty in matte level and associated insufficient matte buffer height, and high furnace operating temperatures. These factors seldom worked in isolation and will be explored in more detail in the paper. The variability in furnace feed characteristics led Lonmin to redesign Furnace No. 1, to invest in backup furnace capacity, and to invest in improved monitoring and control. These improvements consisted of online and high-frequency off-line monitoring of feed chemistry and mineralogy, online pressure monitoring of water-cooled circuits, an alternative matte liquid level measurement in the furnace, and electrode immersion estimation. Improvements were also made at the converters by installing and utilizing optical spectral analysis of the converter flame to characterize converter behaviour and achieve the desired iron end-point for white matte. This paper also briefly discusses the current and future expansion plans, as well as ancillary operations at the smelter such as flue-gas handling and materials handling.

Interest in industrial minerals in recent years has increased to such an extent that it has taken them into the mainstream of the Australian mineral industry. Notwithstanding that time series data on the values of production, exports, and imports show that industrial minerals are overshadowed by metals and energy minerals, their contribution to the national economy is important and more significant than would seem to be indicated by the statistics. Whereas the ex mine value of metals generally includes some processing (at least to a concentrate stage), most industrial minerals are valued at little more than their extraction cost, in addition to which such costs are generally low because most industrial minerals are exploited in low-cost surface operations. Consequently, values of mine production of metals and industrial minerals are not strictly comparable in that values of mine production of metals tend to be overstated Short term growth of the industrial minerals sector is assured because of several new projects already commissioned but not yet reflected in the statistics. Longer term growth is also assured, based on various other major projects that are likely to come on stream in the early to mid 1990s.

(Hons.) in chemistry (1949) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Mr G. C. Thompson matriculated at Dale College in 1951. He then attended the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.8c. (Min. Eng.) in 1959. Mr P. T. Fewell was born and educated in the United Kingdom. After obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) in 1958 at Sheffield University, he emigrated to South Africa. DtP. R. Jochens, Pr. Eng., has been a member of Council since 1974, serving as President in 1980-1981.

Os aços inoxidáveis dupex tem sido largamente empregado em vários setores da industria principalmente em virtude da sua boa combinação entre suas propriedades mecânicas e resistência a corrosão. Um aço inoxidável duplex DIN W. Nr. 14462 foi submetido a ensaios de torção a quente com taxas de deformação de 0,3; 0,5; 1; 3 e 5 s-1 a temperaturas que variou entre 1.000 e 1.150°C. As amostras deformadas foram analisas através de microscopia ótica. As configurações das curvas de escoamento plástico foram analisadas em termos dos parâmetros de fluxo localizado como um mecanismo de acomodação da deformação durante a torção a quente. As microestruturas reveladas mostraram que o comportamento plástico do material é influenciado pela disposição inicial das partículas de austenita na matriz ferrítica e a queda de tensão após o pico esta relacionada à ocorrência de fluxo localizado na matriz ferrítica associado à fragmentação das partículas de austenita durante o processamento, bem como aos fenômenos de recuperação e recristalização dinâmica, típicos dos aços inoxidáveis duplex.
