Broad band mine communication traditionally is characterized mainly by individual solutions, which have in common their long development phases and their high cost for development, operation and service. The use of Ethernet and the TCP/IP family of standardized protocols provide an uniquely price efficient combination of high bandwidth open networking, universal use and accessibility of price efficient development tools, especially because it forms the technical infrastructure for the worldwide Internet. TCP/IP and Ethernet assures reliable networking however it is not able to guarantee the latency timing of forwarding network information. Therefore, the network design requires strict load limitation and application level traffic control especially if moving equipment has to be manually remotely controlled via the network. The paper discusses the technologies the application of Ethernet and WLAN in underground mining environments.

Underhand cut and fill mining methods are used at the Lucky Friday, Stillwater, and Galena mines in the western US in an effort to safely mine in difficult ground conditions and as a primary mining method where access below the ore is limited. The method has evolved at each mine to meet the unique situations associated with their milling procedure and mine layout. Details of the operational aspects of the backfilling and mining cycles at each mine are presented in this paper, accompanied by a summary of the mechanical properties of the backfill and its in-situ geomechanical behavior.

The Nagambie heap leach gold mine commenced production of gold in September, 1989. The mine,120km north of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, was developed by Perseverance Mining Cor- poration Ltd, a junior Australian mining company, with no other operating mines. Gold production to December 31, 1990 was 47,621 oz. The mine is now producing at the rate of about 45,000 oz per year. As of February 28, 1991, resources at the mine are 5.1 million tonnes measured, at 0.65g/t Au while reserves were 1.65 million tonnes at 0.86g/t Au of proven, heap leach ore, plus 0.37 million tonnes at 0.40g/t Au, of dump leach ore. Metallurgical recoveries expected are 80 per cent for the heap ore and 60 per cent for the dump ore. Perseverance Mining Corporation was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on April 2, 1987, after a capital raising in March that year. At this time the company's issued capital was 4 million ordinary 25ó shares, 3 million of which were issued to the public to raise $0.75 million.

"INTRODUCTION The mines in the eastern part of the now active region of the Tri-State zinc district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma have unusually acid water, which during periods of moderate or no rainfall is used in the mills to replace losses from evaporation, seepage, and tailings disposal. Its use has caused difficulties by corrosion of equipment and by interference with flotation.The growing importance of flotation, which requires good water, and the increasing troubles caused by the corrosion of the milling equipment have prompted the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., to investigate the action of the waters on flotation and to undertake to develop means of obviating their harmful effects.The work was under the immediate direction of W. T. Schrenk, consulting chemist, United States Bureau of Mines, and professor of chemistry, Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and Will H. Coghill, supervising engineer of the ore dressing section of the United States Bureau of Mines.ORIGIN OF ACID MINE WATERSRain water, carrying oxygen and carbon dioxide in solution, finds its way into the pores and crevices of the earth's crust and percolates downward through the rocks. This water and its dissolved gases exert a solvent action on many minerals, the extent of which depends upon the nature of the associated minerals.The iron sulphides are the chief sources of the 'trouble with sulphates and sulphuric acid because they oxidize so freely and contain more sulphur than is required to satisfy the iron when ferrous sulphate is formed. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o efeito da frequência de pulsação da corrente de soldagem sobre a microestrutura e propriedades resultantes de solda de chapas finas do aço inoxidável austenítico AISI 316L. Chapas do aço inoxidável AISI 316L foram submetidas à soldagem variando a frequência de pulsação de 2 a 8 Hz, mantendo-se constante a energia de soldagem. Os parâmetros de soldagem foram selecionados de forma a se obter penetração total. Foram realizadas análises das características superficiais. A microestrutura da seção transversal foi avaliada por microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. A avaliação da resistência mecânica foi realizada por meio de ensaios de tração uniaxial, dureza e dobramento. Os resultados têm mostrado que variações na frequência de pulsação não atuaram de forma a conferir melhores propriedades mecânicas à junta soldada.

Under its organic act the Federal Bureau of Mines is directed to conduct investigations relating to the improvement of health conditions in the mineral industries. This report describes the lead and zino deposits and the mining methods employed in the sheet-ground area of the Joplin district, Missouri, and discusses the causes and the methods of abating rock dust in the mines, the chemical and physical characteristics of the dust, and the quantities present in mine air. Although the preliminary investigation included a number of the "soft-ground" mines, the writer spent the larger part of his time in the sheet-ground mines, for in them alone was siliceous dust found in appreciable quantities. Some results of the preliminary investigation have been published by the Bureau of Mines in Technical Paper 105.a The territory covered in t~lCpreliminary investigation, during the period between November 7 and December 6, 1914, embraced parts of Jasper, Lawrence, Newton, and Greene Counties, Mo., and outlying districts in Kansas and Oklahoma. The remainder of the field work, to which 84 days during the period from February 9 to July 19, 1915, were devoted, was confined to the sheet-ground mines, the most important of which are situated in the vicinity of Joplin, Webb City, Carterville, and other smaller near-by towns in Jasper County, Mo.

PO. La aplicación del proyecto se realizará por LIFE-ETAD, -en tanto posibilita la viabilidad de un sistema pasivo para la descontaminación metálica en este tipo de aguas ácidas."

O sucesso do transporte ferroviário depende, entre outras coisas, da integridade física dos componentes metálicos empregados na via permanente. Um dos mais importantes é o trilho, pois falhas catastróficas deste componente podem gerar graves acidentes. No intuito de desenvolver aços com bom desempenho para esta aplicação, estudos têm sido desenvolvidos para se entender os efeitos de composição química e histórico de processamento termomecânico sobre a microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas dos aços. Neste contexto, este trabalho caracterizou microestruturalmente dois aços de aplicação ferroviária, sendo um Standard e um Premium. Amostras representativas destes aços foram submetidas a ensaios dilatométricos e a cinética de transformação de fases austenita-perlita foi investigada. Por meio dos resultados obtidos, foi possível concluir que o aço Premium estudado possui microestrutura mais refinada e que este efeito é devido, principalmente, à menor concentração de Mn em sua composição química. O menor teor de Mn facilita a nucleação de cementita eutetóide, possibilitando a formação de perlita em tempos mais curtos e temperaturas mais baixas do que no aço Standard. Isto possibilita que o aço Premium, em seu processo de fabricação, possa ser resfriado a taxas mais elevadas do que o Standard sem formação de martensita, justificando sua estrutura mais refinada.

Efficient visible light emission from p-n junctions in semiconductors is currently achieved in the four materials, Sic, GaP, ]Ga1-xAs and GaAs1-x,. Recent advances in materials preparation and p-n junction formation are briefly reviewed. The radiative recombination processes in the different materials depend largely on the band structure and the impurity states of each material. The spectral distribution of the emission ranges from the blue in Sic, to green in Gap, yellow in Sic and red in Gap, Ga1-x AlxAs and GaAs1-x Px. The origin of the various processes are discussed. The conversion of the electrical power into optical power and the measurement of the conversion efficiency are reviewed. The currently maximum quantum efficiencies at 300°K are: 3 pct in GaP(red), 1 pct in SiC(yellow), 0.1 pct in GaP(green), 0.2 pct in Ga1-x AlxAs at 66001, and 0.1 pct in GaAs1-x Px at 6800. The brightness and the interplay of the quantum efficiency and the luminous efficiency are given detailed consideration. VISIBLE light generated by the application of a direct current to a semiconductor crystal was first observed by Lossev1 in 1923. Light emission came from naturally occurring junctions in Sic crystals but little was known then with regard to the mechanism of charge transport and light emission. Some nearly 30 years later and with a vastly increased understanding of semiconductors the phenomenon of electroluminescence was studied in more detail, for example in p-n junctions of germanium.2 In these early studies, the efficiency of converting the electron current into a photon current was very low and therefore aroused little interest toward practical application. More recently it became apparent that in certain materials, for instance GaAs, and under certain conditions, the conversion efficiency was not low at all.3 The subsequent discovery of the p-n junction laser4-6 provided the impetus for increased studies of electroluminescence. Light emitted from GaAs occurs in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum and is not visible to the eye. At nearly the same time the use of GaAs1-xPx led to laser action at low temperatures which was visible to the eye.7 Later a red light emitting diode, made from Gap, was reportedS which emitted incoherent radiation at 300°K with an external quantum efficiency of about 1.5 pct. The fact that such efficient devices were obtainable led to a more concentrated effort in the search for highly efficient room-temperature semiconductor light sources. It is some of this later work on p-n junction luminescence with which we will be concerned here. Since our aim is centered on visible light, with hv =1.8 ev ( ?=7000?), only the wider band gap semiconductors are of interest, i.e., Eg 1 1.8 ev. Although many compounds meet this criterion, only a limited number of those are also good semiconductors, i.e. contain low resistance n and p regions. Some of the more promising candidates are listed in Table I. We will only be concerned with light generation from a p-n junction. This limitation excludes essentially the group II-VI binary compounds, although we will briefly review the case of ZnTe and the solid solution ZnTe1-xSex. As we will show they may contain a p-n junction but only of a special kind. Most of the discussion will deal with the four materials, Sic, Gap, Gal-xAlxAs, and GaAs1-xPx. These appear to be at the present time the best visible light emitting semiconductors. In the following sections we will briefly consider: 1) the electrical properties of p-n junctions; 2) some recent advances in materials preparation; 3) the formation of p-n junctions; and then in somewhat greater detail we will consider: 4) the various radiative recombination processes; 5) the measurement and observation of the external quantum efficiency; 6) the luminous efficiency; 7) the brightness of light emitting diodes (LED'S). THE P-N JUNCTION The p-n junction in a semiconductor crystal is the interface between two differently doped regions. More specifically the p region is doped predominantly with acceptor impurities and the n region contains predominantly donor impurities. The energy band structure of a degenerate p-n junction at thermal equilibrium is shown in Fig. l(a). The excess electrons on the n side of the junction are confined to this region by the barrier potential Eg. Similarly the excess holes on the p-side of the junction are confined to the p-region by a similar potential barrier. If we now apply a dc voltage V such that the p region is made positive and the n region negative, the barrier potential EB is reduced by the applied voltage, V and the junction is said to be forward biased. With the barrier potential lowered, electrons and holes can drift toward the p region and n region, respectively, see Fig. l(b). The current voltage characteristics of p-n junctions in most wide band gap materials can be described by the relation: J = Joexp(eV/BkT) [1] where the functional form of Jo is determined by the recombination mechanism. Jo is generally a complicated parameter which depends on a number of different factors including temperature, junction width, bias voltage, and carrier lifetimes. IN the zeal for opening up new ore-bodies, or for. extracting the ore from attractive bodies gal ready opened up, we very often lose sight of the fact, that, after all, the operation of a mine is a business proposition, pure and simple; and for the best working-results should be treated upon a strict business basis. Of course, in every mine of consequence a record is kept of expenditures and receipts, and such glittering generalities as "gross receipts," " net receipts," " mining expenses," .and " per cent. profit," can be told to the cent; but does this . record show economy of management, either as compared with the same record of other months, or as compared to the record of other mines of the' same class ? Moreover, if such a record shows that the cost of mining is high, does it in any way en¬able the manager to put his finger on the leakage? Does it necessarily follow that a mine which makes a profit of, say, 40 per cent on 25-dollar ore, is doing less economical mining than one which saves 60 per cent on 80-dollar ore ? Of course the figures in the latter case look the more attractive, but when it comes to a point of saving everything which can be saved, and of cutting down expenses to the lowest possible cost of operation, the former mine is doubtless on the most firm and economical financial basis. But as the relative merits of the system of mining in the two cases, nothing could be decided without a basis of detailed comparison ; if one system is more economical than the other, why is it so, and wherein does the advantage lie ? This can be shown only by keeping accurately the cost of each mining operation. And no matter how dissimilar two mines may be in character and operation, yet there are a few general heads common to all mining operations. "Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, has developed a metallurgical wastewater treatment system employing two-stage lime neutralization, sludge recirculation and conventional mechanical thickening.Laboratory investigations, initiated in 1970, led to the construction of a pilot-scale minewater treatment plant, at Schist Lake Mine, in early 1971. This plant, treating 600 cubic meters/day wastewater containing 30-60 mg/l zinc, demonstrated metal extraction efficiencies of 99% under normal operating conditions.On the basis of this pilot work, a second pilot-scale treatment system was established in 1975 at the Flin Flon metallurgical plant to treat zinc refinery process waste water. Through numerous improvements, including automatic control equipment, the system has evolved to a full-scale operation capable of treating 800 cubic meters/ day wastewater containing 4-11 gm/l zinc. Treated effluent contains 0.2-20 mgll zinc. Hydroxide sludge produced returns to the metallurgical process for recovery of metals while clarified effluent discharges to waste.With the system, Hudson Bay Mining has achieved its original goal: the reduction of environmental contamination, while realizing ii return from metal recovery."

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo revisar o atual plano de lubrificação de um laminador a frio modelo Sendzimir, tendo como foco principal determinar por meios analíticos, a confiabilidade dos processos de relubrificação à graxa de mancais de rolamento. Para a determinação dos parâmetros de relubrificação do restante dos conjuntos, que não são mancais de rolamento, foi realizada a consulta dos catálogos dos fabricantes para a determinação dos intervalos e quantidades, conforme recomendação destes. Para a realização deste trabalho, foi necessária uma extensa revisão bibliográfica, de normas e literaturas referentes a este tema. No final deste, objetiva-se a obtenção de um aumento da confiabilidade dos equipamentos, além de uma redução de custo com mão de obra e lubrificante durante os períodos de relubrificação.

R. B. T. KILIANI, New York, N. Y.-I wish to present some figures based upon actual observation extending over a few months time which seem to prove the author's conclusions. It is a comparison of two machines operating on the same ore, in the same plant, one taking the undersize of ½ -in. screen and the other taking the undersize of 8-mesh. Each of the machines was first operated as a pebble mill, with flint pebbles, in open circuit, then with metal pebbles in open circuit and, finally with metal pebbles in closed circuit. For the first case, the percentage of oversize on 48-mesh, Tyler screen, in the discharge, varied, in the mill taking ½ -in- feed, from 37.2 to 19.9 per cent. The second mill, taking the 8-mesh feed, had a variation in oversize on 48-mesh, from 36.8 per cent: to 0.5 per cent.; so it is seen there is considerable variation in these figures. I have computed the tons per kilowatt-day reduced through 48-mesh for each machine under each one of these conditions, giving 6 sets of figures. The first of these I called 1.0 and determined the ratio of the others to this.. In the snipe way, I figured the relative mechanical efficiency according to Kick's law, using' the figures given by Mr. Taggart in his paper, for ordinal numbers of the Tyler screens. I have also figured the efficiency in mesh-tons per horsepower according to Gates' method by plotting the screen analyses of feed and product and multiplying the area by a constant dependent on the scale used. The commercial efficiency of tons per kilowatt-day reduced through 48-mesh checks very closely with the efficiency by Rittinger's law, within 1 per cent. except in one case. Foram estudados os aspectos termoquímicos e operacionais dos aços ultrabaixo carbono com alto teor de silício e alumínio, visando eliminar a obstrução da válvula gaveta (clogging) que gera transtornos operacionais como: redução da velocidade de lingotamento, retorno de aço remanescente na panela para o convertedor e interrupções de sequenciais. Realizou-se também a caracterização do material solidificado no interior da válvula gaveta utilizando técnicas de microscopia óptica e eletrônica. Os estudos mostraram que as inclusões eram formadas principalmente por alumínio, contendo também oxigênio e cálcio. Visando reduzir a quantidade de alumina no aço, substituiu-se o alumínio pelo ferro silício como agente desoxidante e exotérmico. Após essa alteração conseguiu-se eliminar a obstrução de válvula gaveta e consequentemente, os transtornos operacionais.

In present study, partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) was prepared by CaO doped fused zirconia heated by microwave furnace at the temperature of 1450 oC and holding time of 120 min. The XRD results showed that untreated fused zirconia mainly consists of crystalline compounds of cubic ZrO2 phase; while the roasted one mainly is composed of crystalline compounds of cubic ZrO2 phase and monoclinic ZrO2 phase. It is shown through the optimization of structures of two phases that structure of cubic ZrO2 and monoclinic ZrO2 reject each other, revealing its difficulty in forming coinciding interface and linkage of two phases being of Ca atom. Introduction Due to advantages of zirconia, such as high melting point, chemistry inertia, low heat transmission and so on. Zirconia is always taken as megathermal refractory material[1]. However, in the heating and cooling processes of pure zirconium oxide, martensitic transformation will take place associated with greater shear force and volume change, which severely limits the industrial application of pure zirconia in some areas. Such as: Refractory materials, grinding materials and high temperature insulation materials[2]. Through adding a certain amount of MgO, CaO, or Y2O3 stabilizer, etc.[3,4], the zirconia can change into fully stabilized zirconia, which exists in cubic phase. But this high purity fully stabilized zirconia cracks easily because of thermal stress. Therefore, the thermal shock resistance variation is one of the most important quality indicators of zirconia-based materials. According to the heat treatment, the fully stabilized zirconia can be changed into the partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ)[5], which exists in cubic phase and monoclinic phase and has superior mechanical properties, such as anti-heat, low thermal conductivity, large coefficient of thermal expansion and stability, as well as good wear resistance[6].

A Norma Regulamentadora 18 (NR 18) requisita que o trabalho em telhados e coberturas devem ser efetuados com uso de dispositivos dimensionados por profissional legalmente habilitado e que permitam a movimentação segura dos trabalhadores. A forma tradicionalmente mais segura de locomoção em telhados e coberturas é através de passarelas, que devem ser adequadamente fixadas à estrutura destes. Neste trabalho foram dimensionados e fabricados componentes de alumínio para a fixação mecânica de plataformas-escadas em alumínio. Estes componentes foram adequadamente soldados às plataformas de forma a obter um produto final mais seguro e adequado às operações de manutenção de telhados, especialmente em galpões metálicos de grandes proporções, como foi o caso dos galpões onde este produto foi empregado pela primeira vez.

A novel electrochemical cell has been developed for the recovery of MnO2 from residue of pyrolusite ore leading loaded with Fe, Al Ni, Co and Si impurities, This new process can be considered as an alternative to the traditional methods : S02, H2O2 or bioleaching. It has been observed to proceed fairly rapidly and could prove to be a more economically viable process, as well as being more environmentally acceptable. Electrochemical characterization and kinetic studies have shown that MnO2 is effectively leached by electrogenerated ferrous ions at high current density from a pulp containing less than 5 g8 Fe. The chemical reactions are : Cathode (inox) : 2F23+ + 2e ? 2 Fe2+ Bulk: MnO2 + 2 fe2+ 4H+ ? Mn2+ + 2 Fe3+ + 2 H2O Anode (Pb-Ag) : H2O ? ½ O2 + 2H+ + 2e Global: MnO2 +2H+ Fe2+ = Mn2+ + H2O + 1/2 O2 The catholyte (MnO2 pulp) circulates upward in the expanded mesh cathode separated from the sulfuric acid solution anolyte by a separator which shows high mechanical resistance, low porosity, low potential drop, and reasonable cost. Laboratory and mini-pilot tests have led to the construction of an OT crating pilot plant (100 kg/hr) able to leach more than 95% of Mn, Ni, Co at 1000-1200 A/m2, 50°C with high faradic yield (> 95 %) and low power consumption (3.2 kWh/kg kWh/kg &4D). New applications like the treatment of spent Zn-Mn batteries, polluted soils, spent catalysts and oxide ore (cobalt, nickel) with electrogenerated redox species are now investigated at a laboratory and mini-pilot scale.

"This paper describes the challenges of mining a sill pillar under various types of paste backfill quality. From 1994 to 2002, Louvicourt mine produced approximately 12,600,000 t grading 3.5% Cu, 1.5% Zn, 27 g/mt Ag, and 0.85 g/mt Au. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The production of this 4,300 t/d operation was accomplished using two mining horizons; from the 655 m level to the 415 m level and from the 860 m level to the 680 m level. The main sill pillar is between the 680 m level and the 655 m level. The second sill pillar is between the 885 m level and the 860 m level representing a quarter of the main sill pillar in size. Since 2002, production has gradually decreased and mining activities are expected to end in mid-2005. The sill pillar production will represent almost 25% of the total mine production. The overall recovery of the sill pillars stopes will be discussed in this paper. To recover the sill pillars, more than 1,500 m of development was planned in or under paste backfill. The first sill pillar stopes under paste backfill were mined out in 2002 with excellent results."
