Iron oxide (FeO) plays an extremely important part in the manufacture of iron and steel. In the three major processes- blast-furnace, open-hearth, and Bessemer converter-iron oxide is the chemically predominant compound and controls to a large ex- tent the operation of the furnaces and the composition and quality of their respective products. In order to emphasize the importance of iron oxide in each process, they will be considered individually in some detail. THE OPEN-HEARTH FURNACE. Iron oxide is introduced into the open-hearth furnace in four ways : 1. The scrap charged into the open hearth is oxidized by the furnace gases, the amount of oxide formed depending primarily on the amount and type of scrap charged. It has been found' that with large scrap, 1.7 Ib. of FeO is formed per 100 Ib. of scrap charged, whereas with scrap of medium size about 5.3 Ib. of FeO is formed per 100 Ib. of scrap charged, when the period between the charging of the scrap and the addition of hot metal is 3 hours. 2. The scope and salient features of a general risk-analysis model for the main types of new mining ventures are covered in brief outline. The following special features and their effects on the investment criteria are discussed: - various criteria for viability, - the maximum shortfall of funds, - correlations between the grades of up to five ore constituents and between the corresponding product prices. differential inflation and escalation rates for costs and prices, - the estimation, if relevant, of a pay limit based either on the major product only, or on the two major products jointly, - the likely recovery grades of all the products to be obtained when the ore-body is mined to any such pay limit. - an option to take account of the effect on the pay limit of any negative taxation on marginal ore, - investment analyses in current and real terms for individual groups of investors subscribing for equity and any loan capital on differential terms.

Heat content values were experimentally determined for yttrium metal between temperatures of 400° and 1,300° K and for iron pentacarbonyl between 301° and 380° K. The drop technique was used; that is, a sample of material sealed in a protective capsule was heated to 3 desired temperature in a furnace and then dropped into an ice calorimeter. A revised technique for determining heat content values from calorimetric data is described. Heat content and corresponding entropy-increment data above a reference temperature of 298.15° K are presented in tabular form. Equations for heat content and heat capacity as functions of temperature were derived for each substance. "An AG/SAG mill was commissioned at the Brunswick mine concentrator in October 1998. This paper discusses the original shell top hat liner design for the bi-directional AG/SAG mill, observed liner wear, subsequent liner design modifications, and benefits.The original liners were chrome-moly steel Norsteel with rubber grates and rubber-lined pulp lifters. The design was based on experiences of other AG/SAG mills and recommendations by the liner supplier, Norcast. Liner design modifications were made in an iterative fashion after observing the wear rate profile of the liners; over ten liner sets were implemented. Shell liner design improvements were supported by a design of experiments approach in conjunction with discrete element method (DEM) charge motion simulations. Design optimization took into account lining costs and impacts on operating performance. The team approach to the liner design improvements process is described with emphasis on the application of the design of experiments. The liner wear history and mill operating performance are presented."

In the last decade a great dealt of attention has been paid to the chemistry of polynuclear gold derivatives with a central heteroatom, not only from the experimental and structural but also from the theoretical standpoint (1). Interesting hypercoordinated species of the type [C(AuPR3)5]+, [C(AuPR3)6]2+, [N(AuPR3)5]2+, [P(AuPR3)5]2+ and [P(AuPR3)6]3+ have been described (2), apart from other complexes with more conventional stoichiometry, and all have in common the presence of gold-gold interactions of ca. 3 Å. Usually, the chemistry of the first row elements of the p-block is known to follow classical rules of bonding, and only in cases of extreme electron-deficiency has the traditional electron count to be reconsidered to account for special types of molecular or solid state structures. Many of these heteroatomcentered complexes are electron-deficient and the gold-gold interactions provide a significant contribution to their stability. The attraction between these closed-shell systems has recently captured the attention in inorganic and organometallic chemistry (1). P. Pyykkö has summarized the available theoretical and experimental evidence of intra- and inter-molecular interactions between heavy metal atoms, such as Au(I) (3). In general, when heavy metals are involved in such interaction, the closed-shell attractions are of metallophilic or van der Waals type, as has been found for d8, d10 coinage-metals, and d10s2 centers. Experimental evidence for the aurophilic Au(I)???Au(I) attraction is available from crystallography, NMR and Raman spectroscopies, and optical spectroscopic measurements of the interaction strength (4). It is manifested in molecular conformations with relatively close Au???Au interactions of ca. 3 Å, whose strength has been estimated at ca. 25-50 kJ/mol (5). These attractions are weaker than most covalent or ionic bonds, but stronger than other van der Waals bonds and comparable in strength to typical hydrogen bonds. The phenomenon cannot be satisfactorily explained by classical theories such as hybridization (3). From a theoretical point of view, the attractions close to equilibrium distances are caused by dispersive interactions together with relativistic effects (6). The attractive contributions are dominated by pair-excitations from the heavy metal, such as gold, strengthened by relativistic effects. In all the cases where there are inter- or intramolecular metal-metal attractions, the correlation effects are essential; if they are omitted, at the Hartree-Fock (HF) level, repulsive interactions are obtained (6). Hence, it is necessary to use at least second-order Møller-Plesset level (MP2) methods for the dispersive forces, which are included in the electronic correlation effects (7).

This paper explores direct use of finite element analysis by CASTEM 2000 in order to determine the evolution of T-stress term for arc of pipe specimens with external surface crack. A simple method, called the stress difference method proposed by Yang (1999), is used to compute the elastic T-stress in mode I at a crack tip. The different crack geometries and length-to-thickness ratio on T-stress and stress-intensity factor (SIF) are examined. The revisited stress difference method is shown to be an accurate and robust scheme for evaluating T-stress in arc of pipe.

In March, 1938, E. P. Fleming, metallurgist for the American Smelting and Refining Co. inaugurated an investigation into the possibilities of recirculating the gases from Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines operating on lead charge, with the twofold object of concentration of the SO2 content and reduction in volume of total gas produced. The possibility of recovering a commercial grade of SO2 gas from D & L machines operating on lead charge had previously been considered by several investigators. Early History of Recirculation The Selby Smelter Commission Report, published by the Bureau of Mines in 1914, contains a chapter by A. E. Wells regarding results obtained at Selby, wherein some of the richer gas was recirculated through a hood over the pallets. Oldright and Miller of the U. S. Bureau of Mines had also made tests at Trail, B.C., and at Kellogg, Idaho. R. C. Rutherford, while at the Chihuahua, Mexico, Smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., in May, 1937, proposed recirculation of D & L gases to decrease the volume of gas handled by the baghouse. At none of these plants, however, was the operation commercialized. In July, 1938, Mr. Fleming, in correspondence with the Selby Plant, inquired regarding the possibility of obtaining 6 pct SO2 gas from the Selby D & L machines. At that time, the writer advised that there was slight possibility of obtaining 6 pct SO2 gas without re- circulation, but believed that it was possible with recirculation, and that experimental work toward that end should be tried at some plant where spare D & L machines were available. The foregoing statement was based on the following information then available— 1. Tests on Selby first-over machines showed 2.28 pct SO2 from first windbox and 1.03 pct SO2 from second windbox, and corresponding figures for second-over charge of 0.81 pct SO2 for first windbox and 0.08 pct SO2 for second windbox. 2. Oldright and Miller (US. Bureau of Mines) in 1932 at Bunker Hill, on 42 in. X 22 ft machines found: a. First-over charge—Maximum SO2 concentration (leaving cake) of 9.5 pct. b. First-over charge—SO2 concentration of over 8 pct from the 4 ft to the 12 ft points beyond the front dead-plate and that the concentration then dropped rapidly. c. That approximately 80 pct of the total sulphur eliminated on the second-over machines occurred during the travel of the pallets from the 1 ft to the 6 ft distances from the dead-plate. d. That approximately 94 pct of the total sulphur eliminated on the second-over machines occurred over the first windox. 3. Oldright and Miller (US. Bureau of Mines) in 1932, at Trail, on 42 in. X 50 ft machines found: a. First-over charge—SO2 varied from 2.0 pct to 5.5 pct (leaving cake) from the 12 ft to 28 ft points from the deadplate. b. That the average SO2 increased from 1.0 pct at 7 ft from dead-plate to maximum of 3.3 pct at 20 ft, then dropped to 1.5 pct at 40 ft. c. That on a 22 ft, second-over machine with an 11 in. bed the SO2 varied from 4.5 pct to 6.5 pct from the 2 ft to the 8 ft points from the dead-plate. d. That on the final roast, the SO2 concentration also varied across the pallets; that is, 2 1/2 pct at the side, increasing to 6.0 pct, 5 in. in, and to 7.0 pct at 10 in. to 20 in. in, then decreased vice versa at the opposite side. e. Concluded that most of the sulphur on a 22 ft machine was removed over the first 7 ft of the first windbox; therefore, they partitioned the first windbox so that the exit gas from the second 4 ft section was returned to the surface of the pallets over the fist 7 ft section, and during a seven-day trial the gas from the 4 ft section averaged 2.4 pct SO2, while the recirculated gas from the first 7 ft section only increased to 3.8 pct SO2. (Excess suction over the 7 ft section to prevent escape of SO2 laden gas from the 4 ft section caused dilution by air.)

Field data combined with theoretical derivations were used to design a surface mining operation using explosive casting. Calculated casting results varied from 44 to 65% depending on bench height. This model was then applied to field tests at an eastern, contour, coal stripping operation. Results from five experimental casting shots are summarized and compared to conventional mining methods. The overburden material removed by casting ranged from 35 to 65% with an average of 50%. Fragmentation was improved and it was demonstrated that this procedure is economically attractive with a resultant cost savings of $.59/m3 or $5.93/t of clean coal.

At the rougher flotation circuit of the Miduk copper concentration plant (Kerman, Iran) five column cells (CISA) with the diameter of 4m and height of 12m using static mixer type (MicrocelTM) spargers have been installed. Based on the initial design, columns should accept a feed rate of 625 t/h with 80% passing size of 90 µm and solids concentration of 28% and produce 88% of the plant concentrate (i.e., 22 t/h) containing 32% copper. Due to mechanical and processing problems this objective was never realized and theses columns were remained out of operation from the commissioning time (2005). A new attempt with the aim of returning these cells into operation started in 2013. The results of an extensive study indicated that spargers plugging due to the entrance of small amount (2 kg) of coarse particles (up to 2.5 cm) because of usual problems at the plant environment was the main reason of columns non functionality. With a change in the recycle pump inlet design to the column, which prevented the entrance of coarse particles to the spargers, the operation of the column significantly improved. It was found that in order to have a stable operation of the columns at the rougher stage the feed rate for each column should be reduced from 125 (design) to 70 t/h. The air superficial rate had to be also reduced from 1.9 (design) to 0.6 cm/s. A period of 10 days of continuous operation showed that the carrying capacity was 0.23 (g/min/cm2) which was significantly lower that of the design value (i.e., 0.58). The gas hold up was found to be lower than 10% beyond which columns started to move to the turbulent state indicated by "boiling" froth. The average life time of spargers was determined to be 20 days which considered to be very short. The average recovery and concentrate grade of these columns were found to be 68% and 32%, respectively. The high wear rates of spargers, unusually high level of maintenance and supervision needed and instability of the operation made the plant managers not to use column cells as the roughers.

Through education, investigations, and studies and an expanded coal- mino inspection program the Bureau continued to dischargo the responsibility placed on it by Congress 39 years ago for promoting safety and health in the mineral industries. Although much still remains to be dono, definite progress was made in combating physical and psychological hazards in mines and plants. Accident-prevention cours os for coal-mine supervisory officials and special courses for coal-mine safety committeeman were inaugurated. First- aid, mine rescue, and other safety training was conducted for those engaged in all branches of the mineral industries. Assistance was given in recovery work after mine explosions and fires. Studies to reduce the danger of roof falls, the greatest single cause of fatal mine accidents, resulted in the development and adoption of new coal-mine roof-support techniques. Knowledge of the explosion and health hazards of mine and plant dusts and ways of pre-. venting them were advanced. Electrical equipment was tested for safety of operation in gassy coal mines, and emergency mine communications apparatus was developed and tested. More progress was made in the study of controlling flood waters that threaten life and property in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. More coal-mine inspections were made than in any previous year, and an impressive number of improvements resulted from the Federal inspectors' recommendations, even though many of them went unheeded. A program of con- trolling fires in inactive coal deposits on the public domain and private property was instituted during the year.

Multilayered ceramic-metal composites were produced by solid state diffusion bonding of polycrystalline alumina and three Al alloys containing 1 to 2%Sr, 2% Mg and Mg + Si (5057 Al alloy), The multilayered structures were fabricated at 610°C under a compressive stress of 3 MPa for 2 hours in He-5%H atmosphere, The ceramic-metal interfaces were studied by SEM and TEM equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Addition of 1 wt % Sr to Al promoted good adhesion, without producing any interfacial products, while the Al-2%Sr was poor in this regard due to the presence of dispersed A14Sr which is an intrinsic phase in the Al-Sr phase system, The Al-2%Mg alloy produced a continuous film at the interface, which was characterized to be MgAl2O4. Al alloys containing Mg and Si (5057 commercial alloy) produced not only the spinel structure (MgAl2O4), but another phase rich in Mg and Si (close to Mg2Si), These latter interfacial reaction products were not the intrinsic phases in Al-Mg alloys, and were reaction products at the Al2O3 ?Al alloy interfaces.

Research was conducted to study the characteristics of longwall mining machine noises and to develop engineering controls for the reduction of noise exposure at longwall faces. Time-motion noise dosimeter data was analyzed and compared with existing databases. Experiments were conducted above ground on a stage loader/crusher to explore the potential of using active noise control (noise cancellation) in reducing the noise levels. A 5-7 dBA reduction in recorded stage loader noise was achieved. This paper presents the equipment, procedure and results of the noise surveys, as well as the active noise control experiments.

"Slag density is a significant factor in determining the process efficiency of the electroslag remelting (ESR) process, where calcium fluoride (CaF2)-based slag is formed synthetically to refine metal ingots. Although there are some former studies investigating the density of CaF2-containing slags, the prediction models focusing on them are applicable only to some specific systems. The present study aims to build a model to predict density for a wide range of CaF2-containing ESR slags. To investigate density for various slag compositions, CaF2-Al2O3-based and CaF2-Al2O3-CaO-based slag compositions were prepared. Additionally, some minor constituents like FeO, MgO and MnO were added to a 5:3:2 CaF2-Al2O3-CaO slag in order to investigate the effects of these constituents on the slag. The volumes of the prepared slags were measured in a tube furnace at 1450-1550 °C using the sessile drop technique, and their densities were calculated. The results showed that for the slags, density is related to optical basicity, and therefore a prediction model based on an Arrhenius equation was built. The model was tested with data from literature, and its limitations and validity are discussed.IntroductionThe electroslag remelting (ESR) process is a refining method in which a metal ingot is remelted under a synthetic slag. These synthetic ESR slags are mainly composed of calcium fluoride (CaF2), calcium oxide (CaO) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Other constituents like iron oxide (FeO), magnesium oxide (MgO), manganese oxide (MnO) and chromium oxide (Cr2O3) are added to this system in relatively low amounts, according to the type of steel ingot to be refined. The prediction of slag properties, such as electrical conductivity, viscosity and density, is crucial for the selection of the synthetic slag in order to obtain the required process parameters, like temperature, the passing time of the molten metal droplet through the slag, and metal-slag separation (Akbari, Reitz and Friedrich, 2009; Hara and Ogino, 1981; Mattar, El-Faramawy and Fathy, 2002; Mehrabi, Rahimipour and Shokuhfar, 2005; Presoly, Korp and Schneider, 2008).As slag density affects metal-slag separation in the ESR process, predicting the density of an ESR slag is important for appropriate refining and improved product quality. Although there are many studies investigating the density of slags (Akbari, Reitz and Friedrich, 2009; Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Hara and Ogino, 1981; Matsushita, 2011; Mills and Keene, 1987, 1981; Seetharaman et al., 2013; Shu, 2007; Shu and Chou, 2013; Sikora and Zielinski, 1974; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010), the prediction models built are generally valid for oxide-containing slags (Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Bottinga and Weill, 1970; Mills and Keene, 1987; Seetharaman et al., 2013; Shu, 2007; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010). These models were built on either the molar volumes of the constituents (Bottinga and Weill, 1970; Mills and Keene, 1987) or the thermodynamically calculated enthalpy or free energy of mixing, which can be applied to a system containing constituents sharing an ion, such as an O- ion for oxide systems (Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Hillert, 1980; Persson et al., 2007). Some recent studies modeled the density of some oxide slags on their optical basicity (Shu, 2007; Shu and Chou, 2013; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010)."

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. ESTIMATES of the stacking fault free energy of copper reported in the literature show an extensive divergence of results. Based on measurements of dislocation node radii, Thornton et al.7 find the lower limit of stacking fault energy to be 60 ergs per sq cm: Jossang and coworkers4 estimate the same value should be less than 40 ergs per sq cm. Assuming stacking fault free energy to be twice the coherent twin boundary free energy, Valenzuela8 reports 72 ergs per cm, while Inman and Khan2 cite a value of 24 ergs per sq cm. which can no doubt be accounted for by almost complete absence of interstitials in solution. However, the minute concentration was sufficient to permit observable recovery of dislocation damping. Assuming a dislocation density of 1010 CM -2 and an average loop length of 0.5 , a concentration of interstitials as low as 0.01 at. ppm is sufficient to reduce dislocation damping by more than a factor of ten. The concentration of interstitial solute atoms in Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti was thus estimated at 0.01 at. ppm < (C + N) < 2 at. ppm. The absence at elevated temperature of strengthening due to interstitials, Fig. 1, was therefore anticipated in the titanium alloy. The temperature dependence of the flow stress below 300°K was unaffected by addition of either titanium&apos; or zirconium.&apos; Observed, however, was an initial difference in the absolute value of the flow stress below 320oK, Fig. 1. Grain size may account for the difference; the grain diameter of Ferrovac E was 30 to 45 µ and that of Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti 65 to 90 µ. Although second phase particles in the form of titanium carbides and nitrides precipitated in the Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy, the spacing was too large to produce any strengthening effect. The present method avoids both the question of interaction forces of nodal dislocations and the assumption that the coherent twin boundary free energy is one-half that of a stacking fault. Fig. 1 shows a transmission electron micrograph of a stacking fault intersecting a high angle grain boundary in copper: Fig. 2 is a schematic representation of the intersecting interfaces. To produce the specimen, pure copper was rolled to 0.002 in. thickness and annealed for several hours at 875°C. These foils were strained in tension to l04 µ in. per in., and rean-nealed to 8 min. Recrystallization and/or grain growth were not observed during the second anneal, indicating that intersections such as Fig. 1 are equilibrium configurations. Many such stacking faults were observed, but few were noted as intersecting grain boundaries in well-illuminated areas. The intersection of Fig. 1 was well away from the specimen edge. The pegmatites of the Kings Mountain-Lincolnton, N. C., area constitute the largest known domestic reserve of beryl and spodumene. The reserve is estimated to contain 90 million tons of pegmatic material with 1,280,000 tons of recoverable Li2O (lithia) as spodumene.1 The pegmatites also contain 0.4 to 0.5 pct beryl disseminated throughout the orebodies. The pegmatites may contain a potential reserve of 240,000 tons beryl, equivalent to approximately 34,000 tons of BeO. Different flotation methods for separating beryl from feldspar or quartz, or both, have been developed by various investigators.2,3,4,5,6,7 On the other hand, published information is limited on concentration of spodumene-beryl ores. As the response of beryl and spodumene to flotation is essentially the same, a successful separation of the two minerals depends upon use of a selective depressant or a selective collector for one of the minerals.

The purpose of this development program is to design and develop a known volume air sampling pump for use in measuring the amount of radio-active material in the atmosphere of an underground uranium mine. The principle nuclear radiation hazard to underground uranium mines comes from the mine atmosphere. Daughter products of 222-radon, namely 214-polonium, 214-lead, 214-bismuth and 214-polonium, are inhaled by the miner, resulting in a relatively high lung cancer rate among these workers.
