Over the past 100 years we have witnessed a revolution in permanent magnetic materials. Prior to 1932 electrical machinery depended upon steels for both the soft and the permanent magnet structures. Because permanent magnet steels were easily demagnetized, motors, generators, loudspeakers and similar devices often used the interaction between two electromagnets. Motors and generators were mostly of the induction type, depending for function upon induced fields. The discovery of Alnico in 1931 and its rapid commercialization presaged an expansion of the industrial revolution and today, permanent magnet structures are widely utilized. [ ] DEVELOPMENT OF PERMANENT MAGNETS Act 1: Early Days of Permanent Magnets Alnico, which stands for aluminum, nickel and cobalt, is a family of alloys with similar structure and processing requirements. Additional elements, such as copper and titanium, are present in minor amounts to optimize magnetic properties. Alnico is known by many trade names around the world including Alcomax, Hycomax, Ticonal, Nipermag, Koerzit, Oerstit, Nialco, etc(1,2,3). In addition to the generic name ?alnico?, it is usually appended with a number representing the magnetic grade.

This prediction capability can be used by mine operators to locate the material in the muck pile during excavation which would allow encapsulation to prevent groundwater infiltration.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing and grinding methods, and costs at various clay-mining operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total production costs might not be advisable in some instances, yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to-this distinction between total and operating costs in order that no misunderstanding of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Dennison Sewer Pipe Co., Dennison, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

There is no such thing as an industrial minerals industry. There are, however, many industries operating in the general field of industrial minerals. And although we use the phrase "industrial minerals industry" out of sheer convenience, the only common denominator among, say, the potash mining and processing industry, the sulphur-sulphuric acid industry and the granite industry is, in fact, that they each are exploiting an industrial mineral resource. May I quote the person whom I consider to be the reigning Mr. Industrial Minerals, Robert L. Bates, who in the 4th edition, 1975, of Industrial Minerals and Rocks states: "An industry is considered to belong to the industrial minerals field if its operations consist of extraction and processing, but not manufacturing. Thus the mining and beneficiation of feldspar is a mineral industry, but the manufacture of ceramic products is not. In the cement and lime industries, processing merges into manufacture, and the line is less distinct. It disappears altogether in a plant that extracts salt as artificial brines, and makes sodium and chlorine chemicals, all under the same roof."

"This study provides calibration of resistance factors (?) for design of driven piles to implement Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for bridge foundations using Texas Cone Penetration (TCP) Test data. The basic research approach was to compile a database of published full-scale load tests including projects from the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) historical archive and projects from neighboring state DOTs. Load test results from neighboring states were leveraged by performing new geotechnical borings with TCP tests at the project sites. The final dataset consisted of 30 load tests performed on precast square concrete piles, with pile widths ranging from 356 to 508 mm and penetration depths ranging from 5.2 to 25.5 m, driven in soils. Ultimate capacities for each load test were interpreted based on Davisson, 5%, and 10% settlement criteria. These measured ultimate capacities were compared against predicted capacities estimated from TCP blow count values (NTCP) and design charts following the procedures outlined in TxDOT’s Geotechnical Manual. From the comparisons, statistical parameters of the biases (??= measured capacity/predicted capacity) such as mean and coefficient of variation were obtained. Resistance factors (?) for LRFD were then determined using Monte-Carlo simulations for each ultimate capacity criteria with the target reliability indices of 2.33 and 3.00.INTRODUCTIONThe Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has used the Texas Cone Penetration (TCP) test since its development in the 1940s. The TCP test is an in-situ penetration test to characterize the materials encountered during geotechnical exploration. Texas currently maintains over 53,000 bridges in the National Bridge Inventory (FHWA 2016), and most of these bridges plus other transportation infrastructure in Texas are supported by foundations designed using the TCP test and its associated foundation design method. The Oklahoma DOT adopted the TCP test and foundation design approach in the 1970s, so the foundations for most of the 23,000 bridges in Oklahoma’s inventory were also designed using the TCP method. With this significant body of experience, the TCP method has been viewed as a straightforward, relatively easy-touse foundation design method that consistently yields safe, serviceable, economical, and maintainable foundations. TxDOT’s deep foundation design method is documented in the TxDOT Geotechnical Manual (TxDOT 2012) and currently employs the allowable stress design (ASD) approach. However, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has mandated that the states begin to implement the LRFD method in place of the older ASD approach (Densmore 2000). This paper presents resistance factors at ultimate limit state (ULS) for design of driven piles using the TCP test, resulting from efforts to be in compliance with the FHWA policy."

To develop a rugged catalyst capable of withstanding hydraulic attrition resulting from the oil-circulation process for synthesizing liquid fuels, use of an iron catalyst containing an active coating surrounding an inert solid core of metal was investigated. This massive-iron catalyst in the form of steel shot and lathe turnings was activated by partial oxidation with steam at 600° C, impregnated with alkali, and reduced with hydrogen at 450° 6. The massive-iron catalysts were resistant to oxidation and spalling, and a 6-month catalyst life was attained. Higher operating temperatures could be employed than with fused iron oxide catalysts, resulting in greater gasoline yields. Because the lathe turnings pack with void volumes of 70 to 90 percent, it has become possible to employ a fixed bed without the danger of cementation that occurs with fused iron oxides.

A treatment is given of the transient pressure behavior of a well located at the center of a circular region surrounded by a radial discontinuity. On either side of the discontinuity, the values of permeability, viscosity, compressibility and porosity are uniform but may be different from those on the other side of the discontinuity. The results are obtained by solving a pair of finite difference equations. The numerical solution to these equations is obtained using a digital computer. The results are compared with previously published, approximated analytical solutions to the same problem. Solutions, presented graphically, show pressure decline for constant rate fluid production. The range of variables studied include dimensionless time from '0.001 to 100 and storage capacity ratio from 0.001 to 1,000. The well behaves as if it were in an infinite reservoir for dimensionless times less than 0.25. Reservoir properties near the well can be estimated in the usual manner. An overlay technique is used to match an experimental curve with one of the theoretical curves. It is possible to estimate the distance to a discontinuity by substituting the actual time t and the corresponding dimensionless time tD at which a match occurs into the equation a = (0.000264 tk1/tD , µ1 cI)I/2 where kI/ I µI cI is the diffusivity near the well, and may be estimated from data taken at early time. Several buildup curves are computed. These curves show that for early shut-in times, correct values for transmissibility are obtained from conventional analysis. However, erroneous values of static reservoir Pressure are obtained unless data at large shut-in times are taken. INTRODUCTION A mathematical treatment of the transient pressure response of a well located at the center of a region bounded by a circular discontinuity is given. Within a region (Fig. 20) the properties of both the rock and the fluid are considered to be constant on either side of the discontinuity. While these properties are considered constant, they may be different on opposite sides of the discontinuity. A discontinuity of this type could be a fluid-fluid contact or a sudden change in rock characteristics such as thickness, porosity or permeability. Analytical solutions to this problem are available. 1-3 However, they are so involved that they are of little practical use. An approximate solutionl is available but the range of times over which it is valid has not been specified. A numerical solution to a pair of finite difference equations is used to obtain the solution given in this paper. PREVIOUS WORK One of the first solutions to the problem was published by William Hurst.1 Hurst considered unsteady-state flow of fluids through two sands in series with different mobilities in each sand. He used Laplace transforms to obtain a solution for a single well located at the center of the circle enclosing the first of the two sands. Discontinuous yielding in tensile tests was observed in V-O alloys in the temperature ranges of 150° to 175°C and also 350° to 400°C. The magnitude and intensity of the serrations were found to vary considerably with oxygen content. Maxima were observed in tensile and yield strengths and in the strain-hardening coefficient at the higher temperature only. The strain rate sensitivity was observed to be negative between 150° and 400°C. THIS investigation was undertaken to study the effect of oxygen on the tensile properties of iodide vanadium in the temperature range of 25o to 450°C. Brown1 observed an increase in strength between room temperature and 400°C in vanadium metal, and found that oxygen and nitrogen had a rather pronounced effect on the strength and ductility. A maximum in the tensile strength was observed by Rostoker et al.2 near 300oC and by Pugh3 around 450°C for calcium-reduced vanadium. Pugh also found a maximum in the yield strength and in the strain-hardening exponent, and minima in the elongation and strain rate sensitivity at the same temperature. Eustice and Carlson4 reported the appearance of serrations in the stress-strain curves between 140° and 180°C in iodide vanadium containing 600 ppm O. These anomalies in the mechanical properties indicate that strain aging occurs in vanadium, but the impurity or impurities responsible for the above-mentioned effects have not been identified. The phenomenon of strain aging is usually characterized by the return of the yield point after interruption of a strength test. In the temperature range where strain aging occurs, the yield and tensile strengths attain maximum values, elongation and strain rate sensitivity exhibit minima, and discontinuous yielding is generally observed in the stress-strain curve. Cottrell5, 6 has postulated that strain aging is due to the migration of solute atoms to dislocation sites to produce locking after the dislocations have broken free from their impurity atmospheres during the initial yielding. At the strain-aging temperature the process is a dynamic one in which the solute impurity atoms diffuse to the vicinity of the moving disloca- tion producing "locking" which gives rise to maxima in the tensile strength and serrations in the elongation curves. Cottrel17 has noted that discontinuous yielding in iron occurs when the diffusion coefficient of nitrogen, D, and the strain rate, i, are related by D = 10-9 €. EXPERTMENTAL PROCEDURE The vanadium metal employed in this study was prepared by the iodide refining process as described by Carlson and owen.8 A representative analysis of the vanadium used in this investigation was: 150 ppm O, <5 ppm N, <1 ppm H, 150 ppm C, 150 ppm Fe, 70 ppm Cr, <50 ppm Si, 30ppm Cu, 20 ppm Ni, <20 ppm Ca, <20 ppm Mg and <20 ppm Ti. Alloys containing from 200 to 1800 ppm O, all of which lie in the solid solution range of the V-O system, were prepared by arc melting vanadium together with portions of a high-oxygen master alloy. The master alloy was prepared by tamping pure V2O5 into holes drilled in a vanadium ingot and arc melting this five or six times in an inert gas atmosphere, inverting the button between each melting step. The oxygen content of the master alloy was then determined by vacuum fusion analysis. Vanadium containing less than 150 ppm O was prepared in the following manner. A bar of iodide vanadium was deoxidized by sealing it in a tantalum crucible with a few grams of high-purity calcium. This was held at 1100°C for 4 days to allow time for the oxygen to diffuse to the surface and to react with the calcium vapors. The calcium oxide product was later dissolved from the surface of the bar with dilute acetic acid. In this way vanadium containing from 20 to 50 ppm O was prepared. Sample Preparation. The are-melted ingots were cold swaged into 3/16-in. diam rods and these were machined into cylindrical tensile specimens with a reduced section of 1.00-in. length and 0.120-in. diam. The test specimens were annealed for 4 hr at 900°C in a dynamic vacuum of mm of Hg to remove hydrogen from the metal. This recrystal-lization treatment produced a uniformly fine-grained structure with a mean grain size of approximately 0.06-mm diam. The oxygen contents reported in this paper were determined by a vacuum fusion analysis of the tensile specimens after testing. Analyses for other interstitial or metallic impurities showed no significant changes from that of the original material. Tension Tests. Tension tests were performed on a screw-driven tensile machine at a constant cross-head speed of 0.01 in. per min. Tests at elevated temperatures were carried out by heating the

Early strategic mine planning includes decisions over the organisation of work and workforce accommodation. These decisions involve significant commitments that affect not only employee quality of life but also the impacts and relationships with existing local communities. Strategies for workforce accommodation are characteristically community-based (either as purpose-built company towns or integrated within existing local communities) or commuter (fly-in, fly-out) mine camps. The quality of accommodation underpins the fulfilment, morale and motivation of employees. This is not only relevant to productivity and safety, but also to recruitment and retention, particularly with the current onset of a significant human resources crisis. In the event that communities exist in proximity to a proposed mine then the accommodation strategy selected can influence the value-adding potential for the sustainable development of such communities. This early planning is particularly challenging where mine locations are isolated and/or face significant economic, social and political adversity. This paper draws upon a case study review of five large mining projects implemented in three South American countries, selected to cover a range of scenarios and accommodation strategies. The review aims to advance our understanding of the complexity of the underlying planning issues. Each scenario considered the prevailing environmental, social, economic and political situation, together with the adopted accommodation strategy. The case study review aimed to identify lessons learned and to make recommendations for advancing mineworkersÆ accommodation planning practice.

The tendency of the oxides of such metals as aluminum, zinc, chromium, and calcium to form compounds at high tempera tures with iron oxide is well established by past investigation. Data of this reaction, as developed in laboratory research, have been contributed by Burleigh, Hofman, and Wells, in America, and by many others abroad. A partial bibliography of the subject is appended. From these authorities we learn that the ferric oxide here has the function of an acid, giving in the case of ZnO a zinc ferrite, with a normal composition of ZnOFe2O3 This formation of zinc ferrite particularly affects the success of such processes as leaching or magnetic separation, and thus becomes practically important to the metallurgist. But the meager existing data do not entirely agree; and quantitative results from muffle-practice are conspicuously absent. Furthermore, it being of some general importance to the zinc smelter in both roasting and reduction, the following few notes of operations oil a commercial scale are contributed: I. Physical Properties of Zinc Ferrite. As formed for the most part synthetically by investigators, zinc ferrite exhibits characteristic physical properties, such as octahedral crystals, dark color, and a density over 5, together with a slight magnetic attractability. In examining with the microscope many products of mechanical muffle-roasting kilns, it is, however, impossible to find individual grains which can be identified as consisting entirely of zinc ferrite. The variety of colors, especially where each grain of blende was mechanically free from marcasite, rather conveys the impression of a partial ferritization of the grain. One side or end, for example, may often have the hard, dense surface and dark red to black color of the ferrite, while the balance shows the usual light yellowish brown of a normal iron-free blende.

WITH capacity of 51,000 tpd, the Morenci concentrator produces approximately 49,000 tons of tailing for final deposition. Disposal involves distribution of thickened tailing to dams in such a manner that solids can be used for dam construction and water can be impounded for reclamation. During early operation, although tonnage treated was lower, it was necessary to use orthodox disposal practices in the areas available for tailing. Trestles mounted on a series of dams, constructed of borrow material, carried the pipelines from which tailing were spigoted behind the dams. When adequate disposal areas were finally established, it became desirable to look for more efficient methods. The idea of placing the distribution pipe or manifold directly on the crest of the dam was advanced in 1945. After a period of testing, that procedure in modified form replaced the older trestle arrangement. Marked economies resulted, and time required to prepare dams for succeeding storage cycles was greatly reduced. The tailing disposal area for the Morenci concentrator lies south and southwest of the concentrator building. Ample storage space is available. A wide valley contains three sharply defined ravines lying on an average slope of 4 pct. The more central of these ravines, and the largest of the three, is known as Morenci canyon, which provides substantially more tailing storage area than the other two. Stargo canyon lies to the west; the other is appropriately named East canyon. Total area of the tailing disposal site is nearly 31/4 sq miles, or about 2000 acres. The storage area in use was somewhat more than 850 acres at the end of 1954, or 16 acres per 1000 tons of tailing to be stored daily. At the present time none of the east side dams are in regular use but they are available in emergency. There are five dams on the west side (in Morenci and Stargo canyons) as well as two auxiliary dams adjacent to No. 4 West and No. 5 West. This has made it possible to concentrate men and equipment in a smaller area with consequent savings in both manpower and machinery. Tailing Thickening: Tailing from the flotation process reaches the thickeners with a solid content of about 18 pct. The launder carrying this pulp is subdivided at a central point into seven launders carrying a proportional share to each of seven tailing thickeners, which are located in Morenci canyon close to the concentrator. Five of these thickeners are 300 ft diam and two are 325 ft diam. Thickeners are of the peripheral traction type and rakes travel at the rate of one revolution in 37 to 39 min. The entire installation provides 500,000 sq ft of settling area, or approximately 101/2 sq ft per ton of tailing to be thickened daily.

Institutional and infrastructural factors affecting mineral development are also discussed.

W. J. Evans and 8. Wilshire SEVERAL recent investigations1-6 have shown that the strain, c, during transient and steady-state creep is well-represented by the expression: € = e0 + et(l - e-mt) + Esl [l] where Eo is the instantaneous strain on loading, ET the total transient strain, C, the steady creep rate! and m a constant relating to the rate of exhaustion of transient creep. However, it has been noted6 that deviations from this equation occur over the first 10 to 15 pct of the transient stage, when the creep rate, (. decreases more rapidly than is predicted by this equation. This rapid decrease has been attributed to a large change in work-hardening coefficient. It 1s widely accepted that steady-state creep results from a balance between the rate of strain hardcning h and the rate of recovery r (=-s(st) as: dE/dt = Es = r/h [2] Comparison of values obtained for h at the end of the initial extension and during steady creep suggests that h increases several fold during the transient stage. which has the effect of reducing the creep rate proportionally.7 To examine the dependence, on r and h, of the deformation behavior during transient and steady-state creep. a series of constant-stress creep tests was carried out at 413°C at 6000 psi using 70-30 a brass. Prelinlinary investigation showed that. with this material. the transient stage constituted a significant portion of the total creep life (-0.4tf. where tf is the time to fracture). The alloy. obtained from Metals Research Limited. was made from high-purity copper, 99.999 pct. and zinc. 99.99 pct. Heat treatment at 675°C for 4 1/2 gave a uniform grain size of 5 mm-1. Details of specimen preparation and creep testing procedures have been given previously.6 Values of h (?s/?E) were determined by measuring the instantaneous strain. ?E. which occurred on increasing the stress during creep by a small amount. ?s. Similarly. v (= -?s/ ?t) was derived from the incubation period. At, after a small decrease in stress.&apos; Several values of v and h were obtained throughout duplicate creep tests. using different stress increments in the range 300 to 800 psi. The accuracy with which Eq. [I] represents the present creep curves was established by determining the best value of the constants Es, Et, m , and 6, using a digital computer program based essentially on the graphical solution for this equation devised by Conway and Mullikan.9 About 40 strain/time readings were taken during transient and steady-state creep. Over most of the creep curve, the average difference between the measured reading and the calculated strain at the appropriate time was less than 0.0001. However.

A. U. Seybolt (General Electric Research Laboratory)—The authors should be commended for adding some important information to our knowledge of the solubility of interstitial elements in metals. It is becoming increasingly evident that the effect of even traces of such elements have very far-reaching effects upon the mechanical properties of the body centered cubic metals. Those who have worked in this area know that the accurate determination of the small solid solubility limits in systems of the type reported by the authors is a quite difficult task, and it is therefore not surprising that frequently the results of different workers are not in agreement. It is instructive, and usually helpful, to plot the solubility results on log weight or atomic percent -1/T coordinates to find out if a straight line is obtained. A straight line is expected because in systems displaying solubilities of the order of 1 to 3 at. pet or less, Henry&apos;s law is usually obeyed—or at least well enough obeyed so that the deviation from linearity is not very appreciable. If Henry&apos;s law is obeyed, one canthen use the Van&apos;t Hoff Equation in the form In N = ?H/RT + C, where N is mole fraction, at. pet, or wt pet for small values, and AH is the partial molal heat of solution of the solute. R and T have the usual significance, and C is an integration constant. If one plots the reported nitrogen solubility values as indicated above, the three points fall reasonably well on a straight line. The oxygen values for the two upper temperatures fall very closely to the nitrogen values as shown in the authors&apos; Fig. 15. However, the value at 500°C departs widely from the straight line established by the data at 1500" and 1000°C. It is, of course, true that one cannot place too much emphasis on the significance of a line established by only three points, but in the absence of reasons for anticipating deviations, data exhibiting wide departures from linearity should at least be examined closely. Fig. 16 shows the log at. pct -1/T plots for the authors Ta-O and Ta-Ndata including a solid circle point at 500°C and 1.8 at. pet for Ta-O, which is simply extrapolated from the two higher temperature points. In addition, the data of R. P. Elliott9 for Nb-O are shown. These points were picked off his curve and are not very exact, but as can be seen they line up well on a straight line. It is interesting, and probably significant, that the slope of Elliott&apos;s results is not far from those of Vaughn, et al. This is probably to be expected because one would anticipate that the partial molal heats of solution of oxyten in these two very similar metals should be not too far apart. AH for Ta-O is about -1900 cal per mol, while for Nb-O it is near -2300 cal per mol. Hence, this lends some support to the thesis that the point at 500°C for Ta-O is much too high. The data of Gebhardt and Preisedanz10 are also plotted, and it is seen that their data while lying on a linear plot, have an appreciably steeper slope. The possible reasons for this will not be discussed here except to point out that their pressure-composition data show anomalies which suggest that they may have been dealing with a different equilibrium from that being discussed. There is another consideration which would also suggest that the solubility at 500°C is lower than shown. The solubility values were obtained by the classic method of first establishing a lattice parameter-composition curve. This the authors did, and there is probably little doubt that it is quite accurate. Such a plot is generally almost error-free because it has a self-correcting feature in that any deviation from linearity makes a data point immediately suspect, and subject to confirmation. Unfortunately, this is not true with respect to the actual solubility values. These are obtained ordinarily by taking an alloy containing more solute than is soluble at some temperature and then thermally

"MgO was chosen as an As(V) immobilization agent and a series of immobilization experiments was performed to obtain insights into the behavior of As(V)and MgO during leaching tests. Our experimental and modeling results demonstrated that As(V) immobilization by MgO consists of the following steps: (i) an increase in soil pH, (ii) desorption of As(V) from the soil, and (iii) the re-immobilization of As(V) by MgO/Mg(OH)2particles. Regarding the behavior of MgO, the modeling results showed that when the MgO dosage was 25 mg MgO/4g-drysoilor less, the majority of MgO was used to increase pH, and less than 1% of MgO was used to sorb As(V), which was consistent with the result of leaching tests showing that a high level of As(V) was leached at the MgO dosages. On the other hand, when the MgO dosage was above 25 mg MgO/4g-drysoil, the percentage of MgO used for As(V) sorption increased up to 35%, and correspondingly, the As(V) leaching level decreased to below 0.01 mg/L As at an MgO dosage of 75 mg MgO/4g-drysoil.INTRODUCTIONOne of the major arsenictransport pathways causing groundwater contamination is the migration of arsenicfrom artificially or naturally contaminated surface soils. Therefore, in this study, the immobilization of arsenate (As(V)) in soils was investigated using commercial-grade magnesium oxide (MgO) as a potential cost-effective measurement to prevent the occurrence of groundwater contamination with As(V).With respect to the use of MgO for remediating As(V)-contaminated environmental media, MgO has been used in several studies to remove As(V)from water(Yu et al., 2011; Jia et al., 2013; Tresintsi et al., 2014). Although these studies demonstrated that MgO effectively removes As(V)from water in water-MgO systems, the behavior of As(V)in water-soil-MgO systems has not been evaluated in the literature, and several questions remain to be answered to comprehensively evaluate the use of MgO as an As(V)immobilization agent in soils. For instance, as is well-documented in the literature(Ford, 2002; Lenoble et al., 2002; Zeng et al., 2008), iron oxy-hydroxide (FeOOH) is one of the important adsorbents for As(V)in both natural and engineered systems. Therefore, it is anticipated that the presence of FeOOH in soils significantly influences the behavior of As(V)in water-soil-MgO systems and consequently, the immobilization performance by MgO. Another important question to be answered is the behavior of MgO during the immobilization treatment. In our previous studies (Suzuki et al., 2013a, 2013b), commercial-grade MgO was demonstrated to effectively immobilize lead and fluoride, and the immobilization effectiveness was indicated to last more than 100 years against the exposure to acid rain (pH 4.0). However, these studies focused on the behavior of contaminants. As a result, little is known about the behavior of MgO during the immobilization treatment. The lack of understanding of the behavior of MgO during immobilization treatment is one of the main concerns leading to relatively low public confidence in immobilization treatments."

Longwall mining has a high potential for producing bulk production from a single face. Production is interrupted for a considerable time when it is necessary to move the equipment to a new block of coal. The frequency of such moves can be reduced by increasing the dimension of the block to be moved. Merely doubling the tonnage in a block to be mined may increase production by more than 21,000 tons per year. The time taken to move the equipment can be reduced by careful preplanning, industrial engineering analysis, and specially designed equipment. Reducing its move time from 30 days to five days can increase production by more than 25,000 tons per year. Increasing the panel dimensions and reducing the move time can give an increase in pretax profits of more than $600,000. A comprehensive bibliography is included.

The Annual General Meeting of the Branch was held in the Witbank Golf Club on Thursday, 28th August, 1969 at 5.00 p.m. Mr C. G. Sowry (Chairman) was in the Chair. There were also present: Ten Members: Messrs J. Meintjes (Vice-Chairman), J. E. van Aswegen, A. C. Hofmeyr, I. Botha, B. F. v. d. Merwe, C. H. Coxon, R. Canny, R. C. J. Goode, A. Bain, G. E. Carlyon. Six Associate Members: Messrs B. T. Hosking, R. E. Powell, W. Weber, T. Bulloch, E. J. Jackson, P. J. Muller. Fourteen Visitors. Total Present: 31. The Chairman declared the meeting open and extended a welcome to all visitors including Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Institute. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS GENERAL MEETING The Minutes of the General Meeting held on the 26th June, 1969, were read and adopted. CHAIRMAN&apos;S REPORT The Chairman presented a report outlining the activities of the Branch during the past year. Membership of the local Branch had increased from 80 to 99 during the year. DECLARATIONOF OFFICEBEARERS The Chairman announced that owing to his transfer out of the Witbank area, he was unable to accept the nomination as Chairman for a further year of office. The outgoing committee had elected Mr J. Meintjes Chairman and Mr A. Bain Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J. Meintjes then took the chair. Mr J. Meintjes thanked Mr C. G. Sowry for his successful steering of the Branch during its period of inauguration. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Chairman then read the Scrutineers&apos; Report and declared the following eight members elected as Committee Members for the 1969-1970 year: Messrs I. Botha, A. W. Brereton, G. E. Carlyon, B. T. Hosking, E. J. Jackson, B. D. McNeice, P. J. Muller, B. F. van der Merwe. TALK The Chairman then called upon Mr A. Bain to present his talk and film show on &apos;Impressions of the mining and metallurgy congress tour to Australasia&apos;. CLOSURE After thanking the speaker for an interesting talk, the Chairman declared the Meeting closed at 8.40 p.m.

A recent study by the National Academy of Engineering concluded that if the U.S. Coal Industry is to double production by 1985 it must open 30 new 2,000,000 tons per year surface mines in the eastern states and 100 new 5,000,000 tons per year surface mines in the western states, in addition to major growth in underground mining. Major expansions in coal mining are also planned in other countries. Engineering geology can play an important part in coal mine development, operation and abandonment (Table I), and with the increasing scale of surface coal mining and the requirements of environmental legislation, it seems certain that engineering geology and geotechnics will play a growing role in surface coal mining.

In this bulletin the same general plan of classification of references has been followed, but several additions have been made. Natural aggregates, primarily stone, sand and gravel, are recovered from widespread, naturally occurring mineral deposits and processed for use primarily in the construction industry. They are mined, crushed, sorted by size, and sold loose or in concrete products to build roads, houses, buildings and other structures. Smaller quantities are used in agriculture, cement manufacture, and chemical and metallurgical processes. The growth of cities, their buildings and the highways that connect them have created demand for enormous quantities of aggregates. Consumption has now reached 9 t (10 st) per person and continues to grow faster than population. The aggregates industry is the largest mining industry in the United States in terms of production by weight, by volume and by number of active operations. About 80 percent of the concrete pavement and more than 90 percent of the asphalt pavement is composed of aggregates.
