O refino de grão da estrutura bruta de solidificação da liga Cu-30%Zn (latão 70/30) a partir de adições de P e Zr ao banho líquido foi investigado utilizando-se microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica e microanálises. Foram conduzidas medidas de tamanho médio de grão pelos métodos planimétrico e do intercepto linear e foram realizadas microanálises por espectroscopia de dispersão de energia (EDS) e de comprimento de onda (WDS). Nas amostras obtidas observa-se que, quando são adicionados P e Zr, sempre ocorre a diminuição do tamanho médio de grão em relação àquele das amostras onde apenas P é adicionado. O menor tamanho médio (? 200 ?m) ocorre para um teor de 0,16% de Zr. O refino de grão coincide com a formação de precipitados geralmente facetados, contendo Zr e P em uma proporção equivalente à da fase ZrP. Sugere-se que as adições causaram a formação de partículas sólidas de ZrP, sobre as quais ocorreu a nucleação heterogênea de grãos da fase Cu-?, resultando no refino de grão.

Os aços inoxidáveis martensíticos, em geral, aliam boas propriedades mecânicas e satisfatória resistência à corrosão, características associadas à possibilidade de realização de tratamentos térmicos de têmpera e revenimento. Nesse contexto, no presente trabalho foram avaliados os efeitos das condições desses tratamentos na microestrutura e nas propriedades mecânicas de um aço inoxidável martensítico de médio teor de carbono. Foram consideradas três temperaturas de aquecimento na têmpera e seis temperaturas de revenimento. A avaliação microestrutural foi realizada por meio de microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. As propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas por meio de ensaios de dureza. Foi observada a elevação na dureza do aço com o aumento da temperatura de aquecimento na têmpera, assim como a dissolução dos carbonetos presentes no material. No revenimento subsequente observou-se o aparecimento do pico de dureza referente ao endurecimento secundário a uma temperatura de 500°C.

It has been known that after initial pile driving, pile capacity gain over time (set-up) could constitute a significant portion of the total pile capacity. In the past, there has been very little guidance for incorporating pile set-up capacity in design. This may be due to large uncertainties involved in predicting the pile set-up. A comprehensive statistical database is developed to describe the increase of pile axial capacity with time, known as set-up, when piles are driven into sand. Based on the collected pile testing data, pile set-up is significant and continues to develop for a long time after pile installation. The statistical database shows that a lognormal distribution can be used to describe the probabilistic characteristics of the predicted set-up capacity using Skov and Denver?s equation. The main objective of this paper is to incorporate the set-up effect into a reliability-based Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) of driven piles in sand. A First Order Reliability Method (FORM) is used to derive separate resistance factors that would account for different degrees of uncertainties associated with the measured short-term capacity and the predicted set-up capacity from the proposed semi-empirical equations. The incorporation of set-up effects in the LRFD helps improve the prediction of the total capacity of driven piles, resulting in more economical design. A practical design procedure within LRFD framework to incorporate the pile set-up effect is outlined at the end of the paper.

As a result of the consumption and the rising cost of raw materials for ironmaking, steel producers have increased their utilization of low-cost, low-grade raw materials such as high alumina iron ore. The effect of Al2O3 and the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on the viscosity, surface tension and sulfide capacity of the CaO–SiO2–Al2O3–MgO–TiO2 blast furnace slag system were studied in the present work. At a fixed CaO/SiO2 ratio of 1.20, 9 mass pct MgO, and 1 mass pct TiO2, the viscosity increases with an increase in Al2O3 content at a range of 16–24 mass pct, and decreases when the Al2O3 is higher than 24 mass pct. Increasing Al2O3/SiO2 from 0.47 to 0.92 causes a slight decrease in viscosity of the slags and has an opposite effect when Al 2O3/SiO2 is more than 0.92. The surface tension increases with increasing Al2O3 content at a fixed Al2O3 content and Al2O3/SiO2 at a fixed CaO content. The desulfurizing capacity decreases with increasing of Al2O3 content, while increases with increasing Al2O3/SiO2 at a fixed CaO content.

A família de aços avançados de alta resistência – AHSS contempla uma variedade de materiais que são utilizados principalmente na indústria automotiva. Os aços bifásicos incluem-se nesta classe e são assim denominados devido a sua microestrutura composta por ferrita e martensita. Apresentam alta resistência mecânica associada à ductilidade, o que permite a aplicação de grandes esforços em pequenas áreas sem que ocorra fratura. Este trabalho visa verificar, através de caracterização metalográfica, ensaios de tração e anisotropia, as propriedades mecânicas do aço DP600 para trabalho a frio. A curva tensão-deformação de engenharia para este aço foi estabelecida através de ensaios de tração até a ruptura do corpo de prova. Foram obtidos valores médios de 330 MPa para o limite de escoamento, 589 MPa para o limite de resistência à tração e 20% de alongamento. Os índices de anisotropia também foram verificados através de ensaios de tração. Estes resultados foram comparados com valores encontrados na literatura. De um modo geral, as chapas ensaiadas resultaram em uma diferença de valores de aproximadamente 10%, possibilitando sua utilização a frio.

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. "In kraft pulp mills, the spent pulping liquor is concentrated and used as fuel in the recovery boiler. Extensive deposits are formed in the upper section of the boiler due to the very high ash content of the fuel and the volatite nature of the ash. Deposits are composed of Na2S04, Na2C03 NaCI, some potassium salts and reduced sulphur compounds. Chloride and potassium salts are enriched in the deposits compared to the smelt due to their greater volatility.Severe corrosion of the superheater tubes in a recovery boiler has been traced to three factors: a non-uniform temperature profile in the flue gas, relatively high operating steam temperatures and high chIoride and potassium concentrations in the fireside deposits.The role of chIoride and potassium in superheater corrosion has been explained by increased Iiquid phase in deposits. Together with corrosion studies, this information has shown that kraft recovery boiler superheater corrosion due to the chloride and potassium enriched deposits can be avoided by proper boiler operation and by judicious superheater and furnace design.IntroductionThis investigation of recovery boiler superheater corrosion was initiated by the discovery of severe corrosion of the final stage superheater in a Canadian closed cycle kraft pulp mill(1,2). Metal wastage leading to tube failure was believed to be due to three major causes : the relatively high operating steam temperatures, the uneven distribution of flue gas temperature across the boiler which created a "" hot spot"" and the high chloride and potassium concentrations in the superheater fire side deposit. The mill responded to the problem by i) lowering the superheater steam temperature from 475°C to 380°C, ii) minimizing the chloride content in the spent pulping liquor, by controlling the NaCI input with recovered bleach plant effluent, and iii) changing metallurgy of a portion of the bottom section of the final stage superheater platens from ferritic steel T-22 (2.25% Cr, 1% Mo) to austenitic steel Incoloy 800H (21% Cr, 32% Ni, 46% Fe, 1.5% Mn, 1% Si, 0.6% Al) (Fig. 1). The processing of banded iron ore by direct anionic and reverse cationic flotation to produce pellet grade concentrate is investigated. This low-grade iron ore, known as banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) contains 41.8% Fe, 41.5% SiO2, 1.2% Al2O3, and 0.5% LOI. The flotation behavior of BHQ is studied by varying the effect of concentration of collector, frother, dispersant and pH. Oleic acid and dodecylamine are used as the anionic and cationic collectors respectively. The parameters that gave the best results in cell flotation are utilized in 100 mm diameter flotation column. All the results are compared with regard to the iron grade and recovery in concentrate. It is observed that, anionic collector with dispersant dosage of 220 g/ton, at pH ~8.5 is selective and yielded a high-grade iron concentrate with low silica as impurity. Also, it is possible to achieve an iron concentrate with 64% Fe at 30-37% weight recovery. The characterization studies of the BHQ ore using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and liberation analysis with QEMSCAN® are carried out. The sample contains 58.8% hematite and 37.7% quartz and the liberation of hematite particles are found to be 90.3% in -25 µm size. An alternative statistical modeling approach called response surface methodology was also undertaken to optimize the operating parameters in order to maximize the iron grade and recovery. The predicted results by the model are in agreement with the experimental values.

O presente estudo objetivou avaliar as diferenças no processo de flotação entre as frações -0,150 +0,038 mm e -0,038 mm, bem como a redução de custo no processo de flotação. Verificou-se que as frações apresentam resultados bem distintos em recuperação mássica, recuperação metalúrgica, seletividade, razão de enriquecimento e teor de sílica no concentrado, condições ideais de adição de reagentes e qualidade final de concentrado e rejeito entre as frações e também se comparada a ao experimento controle, composto com a mesma amostra sem ser fracionada. Através dos testes executados segundo o planejamento fatorial, foram estabelecidos os pares de variáveis ótimas para a flotação para cada fração distinta e as possíveis otimizações utilizando-se a ferramenta estatística. Os resultados obtidos dos testes de bancada apontaram que a amostra composta e as frações separadas apresentam comportamentos distintos quanto às variações dos fatores dosagem de amina, dosagem de amido e pH de flotação e que os resultados do processo melhoram significativamente em relação ao processo sem o tratamento fracionado.

The work of the United States Bureau of, Mines is concerned primarily with the prevention of accidents in the mining, petroleum, and allied industries. This report analyzes the fatal accidents in the coal mines of Tennessee and gives the pertinent factors in tabular and descriptive form, with interpretations and suggestions to operators, workers, and the State Division of Mines for the future prevention or reduction of accidents in coal mines. "To adopt new technology advancement in Steel Plant, there is a requirement of shifting of operation process from Coke Wet Quenching (CWQ) to Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ). New CDQ chamber foundation with deep basement and underground conveyor tunnel are to be constructed in an operating plant where heavy foundations and structures are located in close proximity. Furthermore, the existing CWQ system will be in operation during new underground construction and erection. Challenges to deep excavation of tunnel and chamber foundation consist of non-uniform ground condition, prevent washing out of soil from bottom of existing foundations, stability of existing nearby structures, presence of large number of underground utilities, ensuring safe underground workplace to construction resources engaged in new construction work along with project schedule and budget constraints. A combination methods involving use of soil nailing, soil grouting, contiguous bored pile and micro pile had been adopted for protection of excavation sides as well as existing structures. Each side of excavation in different stretches were analysed during design as well as construction stages. The use of combination of all techniques in a single brown field project in context of the nature of site constraints and safety issues made this a unique project.INTRODUCTIONSteel Industry is one of the backbones of industrial growth of any developing country like India. Due to increasing land prices most of the steel plants in India are expanding within their existing plant facilities. In addition to that, there is demand of adoption of new technology for future expansion projects to set new benchmarks with global standards.The property owner had earlier installed a Coke Wet Quenching (CWQ) for their Coke Plant. Now, there is a requirement from process department to proceed with Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ). To facilitate the CDQ within the existing CWQ which will be in operation is the main challenge for the property owner. The second challenge is the limited space for underground construction and subsequent equipment erection within the stipulated time frame.From a geotechnical prospective, the project team had uncertainty and reservations in their mind about the construction methodology. Therefore, the role of three “C”: ‘Consultant’-‘Client’- ‘Contractor’ and their combining brainstorming is essential to freeze a working plan for achieving the goal. In this paper, only the excavation support systems for underground foundation structures have been highlighted in the context of solving geotechnical problems."

Exposure to the microscopic particles in diesel engine exhaust can lead to serious health problems, including the incidence of cancers, heart disease and increased susceptibility to respiratory ailments such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma. In Australia, mining companies and state government authorities are actively responding to this major occupational health and safety issue. Their initiatives place considerable emphasis on routine monitoring of diesel particle matter (DPM) exhaust emissions, both for engine benchmarking and as a part of routine engine maintenance. Implementation strategies follow two complementary paths: determination of individual engines? emission signatures combined with periodic engine re-certification; and co-operatively agreed industry-government engine maintenance programs, which are subject to audit. Both strategies place heavy reliance on real-time measurement of DPM concentrations in engine exhaust, using ruggedized instrumentation, mainly based on laser light scattering photometry. Adding value to this cooperative approach, industry has also collectively funded a government agency to design and manage a database, into which the results of all-routine DPM testing can be uploaded directly by individual mines. This win-win outcome is a great example of how cooperative action between governments and industry can deliver the goods: in this case, a safer working environment, more efficient energy use and the capacity to benchmark performance with industry peers.

This paper summarises the strategy for selection between a two module coal plant incorporating large, but less equipment, and a three module coal plant with more but smaller equipment. The two options were evaluated in terms of three main categories: ? Size ? size of the equipment and the effect on the process efficiency as well as the difference in physical dimensions of the plant to accommodate the larger equipment; ? Cost ? capital savings between a two and a three module plant, processing the same ROM (run-of-mine) tons per hour (t/hr); and ? Practicality ? in terms of constructability of the plant, safety of using larger equipment and maintainability of the equipment. Decisions that were taken to reduce the risk associated with size, cost and practicality on the chosen option of a two module plant will be highlighted.

(Eng.)(Rand) INTRODUCTION Stone Age people were living in various parts of South Africa as recent,ly as a thousand years ago, when they were displaced by Iron Age people with a culture developed in the far north. These invaders brought farming, building, and the earliest mining developments to the Transvaal, thus ushering in the beginning of our great mineral heritage. It is of particular interest to record that, up to comparatively recent times, some of these people were excavating iron-bearing shale rocks for their smelting furnaces on the Melville Koppies in J ohannesburg. Although the most recent the iron-smelting furnaces discovered on these koppies is estimated to be some five-hundred years old, it believed that these Iron Age people were driven out, and their settlements destroyed, by Zulu impis only one-hundred-and-fifty years ago.

"Starch is the most widely used depressant in the reverse cationic flotation of iron ores. There is however, an indication from recent studies, that other polysaccharides may successfully replace them. When starches are used in the flotation of iron ores in the presence of quartz as gangue mineral, their strong adsorption on the surface of iron oxides can be explained by the molecular conformation between the available sites on the mineral surface and two hydroxyls of starches. However, when the gangue minerals are iron-bearing silicates, the strong interaction with starch can occur on these minerals since they have the same surface behaviour as iron oxide. In this work bench scale tests were conducted in order to generate scientific knowledge about other alternatives depressants for the flotation of iron ores. A magnetic pre-concentrate from a skarn iron ore processing plant was used as feed material for flotation tests. The reverse flotation approach was used to upgrade the iron content by removing complex ironbearing silicates. The depressants used in this study were: corn starch, dextrin, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and humic acid. The tests were performed under different pH conditions in order to try to relate the efficiency of depression to the pH used during flotation. The results show the important role of pH as each depressant reached its best performance at different pH values. At alkaline pH the corn starch showed best depression performance while the humic acid is more efficient at pH close to neutrality.INTRODUCTIONIron corresponds to approximately 6% of earth’s crust composition (McDonough and Sun, 1995). It is the most used metal in our lives, some of its properties as resistance and facility to be shaped makes is replacement very difficult. The primary sources of iron on our planet are minerals. The iron-bearing minerals most commonly found in nature and economically exploited are magnetite [Fe3O4], hematite [Fe2O3], goethite [FeO(OH)] and siderite [FeCO3] (L O Filippov et al., 2014). These minerals are commonly associated with other minerals (most of the time not economically exploited) forming the so-called iron ore. Iron ore is the source of primary iron for the world’s iron and steel industries."

"A recent study calibrated Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) resistance factors for local soil conditions in the Las Vegas Valley. As a part of this calibration, an extensive database of drilled shaft load tests and associated subsurface soil information were collected and compiled. This database, deemed the Nevada Department of Transportation Deep Foundation Load Test Database or NDFLTD, was designed with the presentation of load test data, the subsurface soil conditions, and the spatial distribution of the data in mind. In addition, the NDFLTD was developed in a way that allows additional data to be added as it becomes available. As such, the rules of database normalization were followed to allow for additional and different types of data to be added to the database and reports. Microsoft Access was chosen to present the data because it is easily accessible to anyone with Microsoft office software, it has a quick learning curve, and it has the ability to present a relational database. The largest obstacle faced when creating the NDFLTD was normalizing the data used in the LRFD calibration, with the goal of reaching the 5th normal form.INTRODUCTIONLRFD is based on statistical performance of engineering components, as opposed to the more traditional Allowable Strength Design (ASD), which divides the strength of a component by a safety factor. Calibration of resistance factors for LRFD requires a robust statistical analysis of past performance. For drilled shafts this requires a database of full scale load tests (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). The FHWA developed the largest US based deep foundation load test database, deemed the DFLTD, collecting data from 1985 to 2003 when funds ran out (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Recently, the DFLTD has been updated to modern standards (Petek et al. 2016). In October of 2007, the FHWA mandated state department of transportations (DOTs) to follow AAHSTO LRFD guidelines for their highway foundation designs (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Since then multiple state DOTs have developed their own, region specific deep foundation load test databases. Florida has a long history of developing databases for deep foundation LRFD resistance factor calibration, with the two main databases being the FL database, and The Deep Foundations Database (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Iowa developed a Microsoft Access based database in 2014 (Garder et al. 2014). Oregon developed a database compiling pertinent data from the DFLTD, Florida DOT’s Deep Foundation Database, as well as from other databases (Smith et al. 2011). Illinois developed the “International Database” for static and dynamic reliability based calibration (Long et al. 2009). Louisiana developed a database for LRFD Calibration of driven piles in 2009 (Abu-Farsakh et al. 2009). The California Department of Transportation has its own internal foundation database, which is housed within the Foundation Testing Branch archive (Smith et al. 2011). In 2016, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) presented its own LRFD calibration for the Las Vegas Valley (Stanton et al. 2017), and the NDFLTD was developed as a part of that project (Motamed et al. 2016)."

The determination of the proper cutoff grade for an open pit metal mine is based on economic criteria and the operating philosophy of the mining company. Previous papers have dealt with the balance of a fixed mine production capacity versus economic return. Mine production capacity is often controlled by the amount of mining equipment and the working area in the pit. A complete cutoff grade strategy is a balance of economic return of mining higher grade material versus the capital costs of additional production capacity and the operating cost of moving the waste and low grade material to assure proper ore release. An approach to the problem is presented which is based in part on work by previous authors and provides guidelines to proper cutoff grade strategy encompassing the time value of money and variable commodity prices.

A corrosão é definida como um conjunto de fenômenos de deterioração progressiva dos materiais em consequência de reações eletroquímicas. Em determinadas instalações metálicas, tais processos são monitorados através de cupons de perda de massa. Quando tal fenômeno se evidencia pela formação de cavidades com pouca perda uniforme, consistindo em um processo de corrosão puntiforme, ele é denominado corrosão por pites. As normas ASTM G46-94 (2005) e NACE RP0775 (2005) recomendam caracterizar a corrosão por pites através da densidade, tamanho, profundidade e taxa de corrosão por pites. Entretanto, essa é uma avaliação subjetiva e o fator humano pode ter influência significativa na obtenção dos resultados. No presente trabalho, cupons de corrosão comerciais foram expostos à corrosão em câmera de imersão no período de três meses, tendo como fluido a água potável. O objetivo principal foi avaliar a influência do fator humano nos parâmetros de corrosão puntiforme. Foi realizada uma análise comparativa dos resultados obtidos por três diferentes operadores. As alterações encontradas se mostram significativas, entretanto, tais variações não modificaram o nível de classificação dos cupons segundo as normas.

A busca por redução de peso e maior segurança dos veículos vem impulsionando a obtenção de novos aços de elevado desempenho. Os aços bifásicos vêm sendo desenvolvidos e utilizados devido a sua considerável resistência mecânica e boa conformabilidade. No presente trabalho foram realizados os recozimentos intercríticos direto e contínuo em um aço de composição 0,121%C-0,499%Si-1,58%Mn-0,021%Cr com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos do tempo e temperatura de intercrítica na dureza da ferrita e do constituinte MA (martensita e austenita retida). A avaliação dos resultados foi realizada por meio de microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e ensaios de ultramicrodureza. Foi observada a influência do tempo e da temperatura na morfologia e na quantidade de constituintes formados. Também foram verificados diferentes valores de dureza nos constituintes e ainda em distintas regiões dos grãos de ferrita. Os resultados indicaram maiores durezas para regiões próximas da interface ferrita/martensita e diminuição de dureza do constituinte MA e aumento dos valores na ferrita com a elevação do tempo.

Direct costs such as medical, legal, administrative, and worker’s compensation costs, property damage, lost earnings, and lost benefits are typically used to compute the economic impacts of occupational injuries. However, there are also a number of less obvious, indirect costs that substantially contribute to the overall loss costs. In fact, for every $1 of direct costs an estimated $3 to $5 of indirect costs are also incurred. This paper presents a systems approach that incorporates engineering, economics, psychology, and sociology in order to evaluate the total value of investments in safety. By studying the interrelated system comprised of the injured worker, their family and coworkers, as well as the organizational structure that was the setting for the incident, a methodology can be developed that will more accurately capture the true costs of mine injuries.
