The procurement process for underground construction contracts, in particular those contacts involving tunnel boring machines (TBMs), is subject to many complex and inter-related variables, including national and local politics, public policy, community involvement and media attention û as well as strict environmental and legal requirements. Other restrictions include the time available to adequately investigate geotechnical conditions and viable technical options to determine the best construction methodologies û including selection of tunnel boring machine characteristics and, those construction means and methods suitable for the specific geotechnical and environmental conditions. The latter are, most often, quite imperfectly understood. æGetting it rightÆ implies that an optimal configuration û of machine type, characteristics and associated methodologies û can be found and successfully implemented for a particular project. æFrom the beginningÆ implies that the lack of time issue can be successfully resolved. Within an international context this paper highlights a number of issues of concern which relate to tunnel procurement systems and the ways in which certain key processes are managed during planning, design and construction. The authors argue that there is considerable room for improvement in the way tunnelling projects are undertaken and an approach is discussed which has the potential for substantial gains in cost and schedule and reduction of risk. Savings, however, may only be fully realised if the new methods can be fully implemented by all parties involved. This, we believe, will require the rejection of ætraditionalÆ forms of management and procurement with associated changes in the roles and responsibilities of owner, engineer and contractor. Additionally, risk identification, assessment and mitigation are essential cost and schedule control process which have, to this point, been underutilised by the underground construction industry.

High-pressure shrouded sprays were first tested on a bench to determine air-moving capability and dust collection efficiency. The bench-scale tests indicated that at 500 psi and above, the dust collection efficiency, when sampled downstream of a water eliminator, was about 99 pet for two types of nozzles. However, for the same water flow, the induced airflow was about three times greater in one type than in another. Since the only difference in the nozzles was the spray angle, this factor was important in air movement through a shrouded spray. Full-scale model mine tests were then conducted to determine the reduction in dust concentration behind the line curtain and at the operator position produced by high-pressure sprays in a shroud. The shroud was mounted on top of the boom of a model continuous miner, and high-pressure (greater than 500 psi) sprays were installed inside the shroud. The inlet of dusty air to the shroud was open toward the face and the outlet toward the exhaust line curtain. The high-pressure sprays were compared with conventional sprays mounted at the head of the continuous miner and directing water toward the face. The difference at the operator position (opposite side of brattice) was significant in that, under certain conditions, with conventional sprays an increase in respirable dust concentration of 471 pet was noticed compared with dry operation due to rollback from face. High-pressure shrouded sprays, on the other hand, decreased the dust concentrations at the operator position (opposite side of brattice) by 28.2 pct.

"Catalytic mechanism of CeO2 in combustion of coals was investigated in this paper. Catalytic combustion of four kinds of coals with different metamorphic grades by CeO2 was examined, suggesting that catalytic function of CeO2 increases with increase of metamorphic grade of the coals. One important reason for CeO2 promoting combustion of the coals is that pyrolysis of anthracite is advanced by CeO2, which not only raises the pyrolysis rate and pyrolysis conversion ratio, but increases contents of light components in pyrolysis gas; and both pore space and specific surface area of the pyrolysis char are enlarged by CeO2, which is another reason. In order to realize in situ catalysis for reducing catalyst consumption, it is crucial to increase catalyst particle number and enhance the bonding force between catalyst and coal. In addition, remarkable energy saving effect was observed when a nanometer calcium-based rare earth catalyst obtained by hydro-thermal synthesis was applied to catalytic combustion of coal injection into blast furnace.Introduction Coal combustion is acknowledged as one of the most important coal applications. Since addition of catalysts could reduce the ignition temperature of pulverized coal and accelerate the coal combustion, catalytic combustion is generally accepted as an effective measure to realize fast combustion of coal. Furthermore, different catalysts added may produce different effects on ignition temperature of coal. It is reported activity of catalysts with the same cation follows this order: OH->CO3 2->Cl->SO4 2-; while that of the catalysts which have the same anion follows: Cs+>Rb+>K+>Na+>Ba2+>Li+>Sr2+>Ca2+>Mg2+>Be2+ [1-4] .Due to the special physical and chemical structure, CeO2 plays an important role in the catalysis field. Many literatures point out that CeO2 not only has great catalytic effect on energy conversion, succeeded in catalyzing combustion of gaseous fuels such as CH4, CO, etc. but also can catalyze combustion of some liquid and solid fuels such as JP-10, black carbon, carbon deposit in the automobile exhausts and so on [5-9].Pyrolysis, the first step of combustion, directly influences ignition temperature and combustion rate of coals. So a great variety of catalysts were applied to catalyze pyrolysis of coals. And plenty of studies suggest that the alkali and alkaline-earth metal compounds inherent in the coals show apparent catalytic effect on coal pyrolysis. Meanwhile, addition of alkali and alkaline-earth metals into coal combustion process also indicates obvious catalysis effect, accelerating coal pyrolysis, improving pyrolysis conversion ratio, increasing contents of pyrolysis gases and changing composition of the pyrolysis gases [10-15].Although alkali and alkaline-earth metal compounds have good catalysis effect on coal combustion, their application in the catalysis field was limited because of their erosive attack to the combustion equipments. In contrast, CeO2, as a substitution of the traditional coal catalysts, presents widely potential application due to its good catalysis ability, non-corrosive and nontoxic. However, investigation on CeO2 catalyzing coal combustion is rarely reported. In this work, catalytic mechanism of CeO2 in coal combustion was studied, in an attempt to provide theoretical foundation for developing new catalysis technologies."

This is something new in my life. A lot of you men here today I do not know, and some I do know. So if you have any remarks to make, I wish you would give your name and the name of your company. This is the first Acid Meeting which has been held under the auspices of the National Open-Hearth Steel Conference, and I hope it is a success. Whether it is a success or not depends entirely upon the support we get. If it does get good support, I have the idea it will be continued as a regular feature of the National Open-Hearth Steel Conference. We all think we have pretty good practices. But we can all learn and I hope that you, gentlemen, who take issue with the things someone else has said will stand up and give your opinions. Otherwise, the meeting will fall rather flat, and we won't get a great deal out of it; and there will not be enough interest shown by the National Committee to continue to place the meeting on the regular yearly program.

Yes we have also used some however, again because of the nature of the maintenance window where we have that two hour (at best) window every night and due to the numerous other crews that are wanting to get in to do the other types of maintenance activities, we don't know if we are going to be getting into that same area from one night to the next. So even with the dormancy additives that one can add to cementitious grouts (that are good up to 72 hours) we don't know if we are going to get back in to the same locations from one week to the next. That's why I use the term "the forgiving nature of the acrylamide". It allows us to ream out the hole allowing us to use the exact same hole without having to re-drill a new hole. The program started in 1997 and we have a budget between labor/materials and equipment of 4.5 million dollars on a year to year basis. For the next few years that is going to come down drastically because the program is going to be more of an ongoing maintenance program. Designing optimal placer gold recovery plants requires a detailed knowledge of the size, shape and surface physical characteristics of the gold particles and the host alluvium in the pay gravel, sand or clay. Results of a recent pilot-scale study of the quantitative performance characteristics of riffled matted sluice systems are presented. For the appropriate non-coherent pay gravel-sand with medium-flat gold, simple sluices can recover gold at greater than 85% efficiency down to 100pm diameter. Alternatives to simple sluices are presented and discussed briefly.

"The existing Rondout West Branch Tunnel (RWBT) is part of the Delaware Aqueduct which has been in service since 1944 and accounts for more than 50 percent of New York City’s water supply. In early 2015, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection contracted Kiewit-Shea Constructors, AJV (KSC) to construct the Rondout West Branch Bypass Tunnel project (Rondout) in order to mitigate the leakage of 132 million L/ day (35 million gpd) of water from two areas of the existing tunnel; the Roseton and Wawarsing areas.The scope of the Bypass Tunnel 2 project is separated into two distinct phases. Phase 1 consists of completing the shaft sinking to a depth of approximately 274 m (900 ft) at shaft 5B, 213 m (700 ft) at shaft 6B and the excavation of approximately 3,850 m (12,500 linear ft) of tunnel at a diameter of 6.6 m (21 ft 7 in). This phase also includes the installation of 2,804 m (9,200 linear ft) of 4.8 m (16 ft) diameter steel interliner pipe through the new bypass tunnel with cast-in–place concrete liner for a finished diameter of 4.2 m (14 ft). Access chambers at the top of shafts 5B and 6B will be constructed for access and housing of the mechanical and electrical equipment for supporting pumps and valves.Included in phase 2 is the additional excavation from shafts 5B and 6B to the RWBT, and the drainage tunnel to remove ground water infiltration from RWBT. This work will be completed during a scheduled shutdown of the RWBT and will include approximately 31 m (100 ft) of excavation of the two connection tunnels. Additionally, construction of the permanent plugs within the RWBT will be undertaken. Figure 2 shows the layout of the work.Access to the work through the deep shaft at site 5B was critical to the success of the project. The hoisting system needed to be multi-functional to handle the different types of construction from drill and shoot of the shaft, starter and tail tunnel, the assembly of the tunnel boring machine (TBM), the excavation of the TBM tunnel including the supply of the precast segmental liner, the grouting operations, the installation of the steel interliner pipe and the cast-in-place concrete as well as ingress and egress of personnel. The production of the TBM operations was critical to the schedule of the project. This required a quick cycle for muck haulage and supply of the precast segmental liner in order to keep pace with the excavation time of the TBM. For TBM assembly, components were limited to a maximum weight of 104 t (115 st) for a single lift. Various cranes were analyzed for hoisting, however, none would meet all of the citeria. Therefore, the project team selected a specialized hoisting system designed in house in conjunction with Timberland Equipment Ltd. that consisted of a total of 14 separate hoists and winches with a total of more than 2,833 kW (3,800 hp)."

The double-porosity model of Warren and Root7 for examining pressure drawdown and buildup phenomena in naturally fractured reservoirs has been extended to intetpret interference test results. Both analytical and numerical solutions are presented. The practicality of some of the assumptions in the Warren-Root model was also investigated. The standard procedure for interpreting interference tests in naturally fractured reservoirs beretofore employed an equivalent homogeneous reservoir model. A comparison of our results with the equivalent homogeneous model indicates the latter is inadequate for early time responses. For late time responses, however, the simpler equivalent homogeneous model yields favorable results. Finally, the effects of well spacing and the magnitude of the interporosity flow parameter are briefly cited. INTRODUCTION Interference tests can be used to provide reservoir information not obtainable from conventional pressure drawdown and buildup tests. The technique involves measuring the response in one or more wells arising from a pressure perturbation introduced into another well. It has been. successfully applied to single-layer, homogeneous, unfractured, isotropic and anisotropic formations to arrive at values of well storage capacity and a measure of directional permeability.l The techniques of interference testing usually can be extended to heterogeneous systems, provided the permeability contrast between any existing rock layers is not excessive.9 In such cases, the practical interference effects in an observation well of an interconnecting heterogeneous reservoir can be predicted using an equivalent homogeneous model. The calculated properties are then average values. Russell and Prats2 have demonstrated the utility of this approach for a single-phase, two-layer system. For naturally fractured reservoirs, some different approaches usually are necessary. The major departure from homogeneous or nearly homogeneous reservoir treatment is to characterize the fractured system as an entity having "double-porosity"; namely, we suppose the existence of both primary and secondary porosity, where the former is contained within a systematic array of identical rectangular matrix blocks and the latter is contained within an orthogonal system of continuous, uniform fractures (see Fig. 1). It is sufficient to assume that the permeability of the rock matrix is so small that movement of reservoir fluids to the producing wells is entirely through the fracture network. For many years, the combined efforts of machinery manufacturers and mine operators have endeavored to achieve greater productivity from the men involved and the machinery and capital invested, by developing methods to drill blast holes more effectively. Obviously, this means much more than simply developing a drill that will drill a single hole faster. Considerable attention over these years has also been given to methods of carrying and positioning the drilling machine on versatile jumbos, whereby the man's time can he better utilized by the faster drilling machines. Likewise, the art of blasting to utilize the holes that were drilled to achieve the maximum amount of fragmented ore and the methods of moving the broken ore have also progressed. But each phase of the production cycle just described must be made to balance with the other phases of the work. Obviously, major breakthroughs in only one phase don't always generate more "rock in the box" per manshift. Yet, through the persistent effort of the machinery developers and the researchers, the progressive attitudes of mine managers, backed by corporate capital investments, and battle after battle at the operating level, progress is made. Then, if the innovated system is good enough to "stick", in a few years it becomes the system that the newer method must replace, after the same repeated struggle. This is the situation that many mine operators find themselves in today, Looking at their production cycle, which is assumed to be efficient and balanced between drilling, blasting and materials moving capabilities, they tend to guard any visable disruption of the balance of that day's production, and many would prefer to maintain the status quo indefinitely. "Under the organic act establishing it, the Bureau of Mines is authorized to conduct investigations designed to improve health and safety conditions in the mineral industry and to promote efficient development and utilization of our mineral resources. The field of the Bureau's activity, therefore, begins with the commercial development of mineral deposits and ends with the production and utilization of the final marketable product.In order to serve more efficiently the various sections of the country, the Bureau has established, in addition to its main offices at Washington, D. C., eleven field experiment stations, three field offices and several mine rescue cars and mina rescue stations. These field branches are so distributed as to cover most of the mining districts of this country, including Alaska. The field service in general deals with specific experimental problems, cooperative work with non-governmental institutions, and mina rescue work, while the Washington office is the administrative head and is responsible for the distribution of general information, the chiefs of the technical and administrative divisions of the Bureau being stationed there.The Bureau is prohibited by law from doing work exclusively for the benefit of any private company or individual. Generally speaking, the Bureau does no assaying, ore testing, or similar service work for the benefit of private companies or individuals. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of roof bolting machine operators and to prevent additional cases of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) thru the development of engineering noise controls. This paper describes and evaluates an engineering noise control for the roof bolting machine, namely the collapsible drill steel enclosure. The results of the evaluation demonstrated that using the collapsible drill steel enclosure provided a 7 dB(A) reduction in sound pressure level at the operator?s position of a roof bolting machine.

This paper outlines the complete failure of the U.S. in status and relevance in Rare Earth Oxides (REO). Although rare earth oxides are strategic and critical in their own right, refining these REOs into elements and alloys is even more important for the development of "Green Technologies" and advanced weapons systems. America does not have an active domestic source of rare earth oxides. America does not have any heavy rare earth elemental or alloy capabilities. The magnitude of this failure continues to become more apparent as the manufacture of REO based electronics and magnetic components moves eastward towards China. China has succeeded in outmaneuvering the United States and the world in its quest to control the rare earth oxides, elements and alloys, and the many industries dependent upon REO. What can be done?

"The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County is planning to construct a new, approximately 7-mile-long (11.3 km) effluent outfall tunnel to be excavated by TBM and lined with precast concrete segments. Anticipated net operating pressures within the tunnel are expected to approach 3 bar. To counteract joint opening and exfiltration leakage, an approach has been investigated to post-tension the precast concrete tunnel lining with steel tendons. The tunnel alignment crosses several seismically active fault zones, at which installation of steel pipe is proposed as a secondary inner lining to mitigate potential offset displacements. This paper discusses the tunnel lining design approach and methods used to address these unique challenges.INTRODUCTION The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts) is planning to construct a new 18-foot-diameter (5.5 m), approximately 7-mile-long (11.3 km) tunnel from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP), located in the City of Carson, to the existing White Point outfall manifold structure at Royal Palms State Beach (RPSB) (Figure 1). The project is part of the Sanitation Districts’ Clearwater Program, which will improve overall system reliability through the repair and replacement of the existing aging infrastructure. The existing system includes two 6-mile-long (9.7 km) tunnels, 8- and 12-feet in diameter (2.4 and 3.7 m), and four ocean outfall pipes with a maximum capacity of approximately 675 million gal/day (MGD) (2.6 billion L/day). Addition of the new parallel tunnel will increase overall capacity to accommodate peak wet weather wastewater flows of up to 1,262 MGD (4.8 billion L/day) and will allow inspection and repair of the existing tunnels. The new outfall tunnel will be excavated using a pressurized face tunnel boring machine (TBM). Shafts at the north (JWPCP Shaft) and south (RPSB Shaft) ends of the proposed alignment will connect the tunnel to the existing wastewater treatment plant and existing ocean outfalls manifold and during construction act as launch and receiving shafts for the TBM. The tunnel will be excavated from north to south as a single heading."

IN addition to its base-metal and coal mining operations, the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has, for the past quarter century, been one of the few large American mining companies interested in dredging. Its activities in this field are confined to gold, and to Alaska, but it is the largest operator in that territory, with twelve huge dredges available to work during the summer on the frozen ancient beach sands at Nome and the gravels of Fairbanks. These operations will be described separately.

"Slag system is an indispensable part during the continuous casting process, and playing various important roles like absorbing inclusions, modifying heat transfer rate, preventing oxidation of molten steel, etc. to ensure the smooth process and excellent slab quality. However most slags contains more than 8% fluorides which tend to introduce a series of environmental and health problems. This study involves the research of the removal of fluorine through the chemical composition optimization. Through the studies of CCT, DHTT, XRD and SEM, it has been successfully founded that the crystalline phase of Ca11Si4B2O22 discovered in this study shows very similar crystallization property as Cuspidine (Ca4Si2O7F2), which is the most important crystalline phase in the current fluorine bearing slags. Moreover, the optimized free/low fluorine slag shows the opportunity to replace conventional high-fluorine mold slag for casting medium carbon steels that is regarded as the bottleneck of green slag development for continuous casting.IntroductionMold flux has been widely used in continuous casting to control heat transfer, lubricate the strand, absorb inclusions, provide insulation and prevent oxidation of the molten steel[1-3]. It usually contains fluorides, like CaF2, NaF etc., which are used to control the viscosity and solidification temperature of mold fluxes [4-5]. However, the presence of fluoride leads to corrosion of equipment, serious environmental pollution (toxic volatiles and water pollution), and high processing cost of cooling water[6-7]. Therefore, the study of low or free fluorine mold flux is of interest and attracts worldwide attention.S. Y. Choi et al. [4] used B2O3 as a substitute for cuspidine in steel B2PB2) however, B2O3 content was extremely high (up to 30 w%). Other studies have investigated F-free mold flux by adding or optimizing components as MgO, Li2O, B2O3 et al[8-11]. However, most of these focused on the melting and viscosity issues or for low or ultra-low carbon steels, where crystallization tendency is not significantly strong. Very few studies regarding to the development of low/free Fluorine mold flux for casting medium carbon (MC) steels have been conducted, due to the difficulty of the crystallization and heat transfer control without the formation of cuspidine."

Gas analysis is of great practical value to the combustion engineer as a guide in the proper deli and operation of power and heating plants. The automotive industry, however, has made little use of gas analysis in the design and construction of engines. Tests4 made by the Bureau of Mines have shorn that for the average motor vehicle approximately 30 per cent of the heat value of the gasoline passes out in the exhaust as incomplete-combustion products. The tendency at present is to pay more attention to ease and flexibility of operation than to efficiency of combustion. However, neither condition can be fully realized except where each cylinder gets a mixture of the same composition - that is, when certain cylinders do not "load up" with gas at the expense of the others. When this occurs, due to some of the cylinders having too rich a mixture while in others it is too lean, it is impossible to get efficient combustion from the fuel used. Gas analysis enables the engineer to determine the quality of the mixture fed to the different cylinders with a high degree of precision. Briefly, the method consists in making an analysis of the exhaust gas from each cylinder while the engine is in operation.

Siliceous float sampled in the Wafi River by CRA Exploration in 1977 assayed 22 g/t Au and 89 g/t Ag. Follow up in 1979 led to the discovery of outcropping mineralisation now known as Zone A. Soil sampling in 1980 and 1982 outlined a 350 m by 400 m area of >1 g/t Au at Zone A and smaller areas at Zones B, C and D. Thirty-one diamond holes were drilled between 1983 and 1986. Elders Resources continued evaluation of Zone A under a farming agreement between 1988 and 1990. Mineralised diorite porphyry was discovered in 1990 by drilling conceptual targets 500 m to the NE of Zone A. Evaluation of this copper-gold porphyry became the main focus of exploration for the next five years and a substantial resource was outlined within a single, discrete body. A review of the paths to project development in late-1995 highlighted the need for increased resources via a second mineralised porphyry and/or an additional resource of Zone A size to make the project viable. It was concluded that the greatest immediate potential for increasing the resource inventory was at Zone A itself where the mineralisation was open in all directions. Detailed mapping and drill core logging lead to the geologic and structural models being revised in early-1996. The objectives of the 1996 drill program were to extend the Zone A resource, to test for continuity of mineralisation westwards to Zone B, to better define the controls on gold mineralisation and to delineate high-grade blocks amenable to selective mining by infill drilling and 3D orebody modelling. The last drill hole of 1996 intersected 30 m at 4.6 g/t Au from 273 m in WR147, deep in the western limit of Zone A. This intersection gave impetus to continue drill testing towards Zone B. In April 1997, hole WR154 was drilled 100 m to the west of WR147 and intersected 20 m at 8.5 g/t Au and 70 m at 11.0 g/t Au at similar depths near the diatreme contact. Drill hole WR155 was then drilled 100 m to the west of WR154 and intersected 86m at 5.7 g/t Au and WR159 drilled 100 m to the south of WR154 intersected 36 m at 9.2 and 50 m at 4.4 g/t Au. A significant zone of essentially blind, high-grade gold was discovered beneath the dipping flank of a poorly mineralised diatreme in what became known as the Link Zone. The long history of evaluation has been driven by the conviction of a dedicated team that a mineralised system of the size and complexity of Wafi with strongly anomalous gold in outcrops over the entire Mount Golpu area must contain economic mineralisation hidden within it. The keys which redefined the direction of exploration and lead to the discovery of the blind, high-grade gold Link Zone were, in our view, the critical review of the project status, detailed geological and structural studies to define clear exploration targets and the necessary funding and persistence to carry this through.

Todavia, as fibras ligoncelulósicas com Malva, Juta dentre outras possuem algumas características negativas para sua incorporação em matrizes poliméricas, como por exemplo, o fato dessas não possuírem boa aderência aos polímeros, pelo seu caráter hidrofílico e do caráter hidrofóbico das resinas. Esse trabalho estudou a incorporação de manta hibrida de fibras de malva e juta em compósitos epoxy DGEBA/TETA para testes de impacto Izod. Os corpos de prova foram feitos sob pressão para que houvesse uma melhora na aderência. O aumento do volume da manta incorporado gerou um aumento da resistência apresentado que pode ser justificado pelo fato da manta atuar como um bloqueador de trincas.

7.1 INTRODUCTION Subsidence measurements include surveys of surface and sub- surface movements and measurements and monitoring of surface structural damages. In this chapter the most commonly employed methods are discussed. 7.2 MEASUREMENT OF SURFACE MOVEMENT Surface movements involve two basic components, subsidence and displacement. The other five components (i.e., slope, curvature, strain, twisting, and shearing) are derived from the two basic components. Since all measurements are geometrical, they can be measured by common surveying techniques. 7.2.1 MONUMENTS The first step is to select the types of monuments or surveying stations. Various types of monuments have been employed. The simplest one is a paint mark on the pavement or concrete slab, although this should be discouraged because it is easily affected by artificial or environmental factors. Others use steel or wooden rods, 2 to 3 in. in diameter or square by 2 to 5 ft long, driven all the way down, flush with the ground. Both types of-monuments have no provision for frozen ground heave and both are tampered with easily. A more elaborate type is shown in Fig. 7.1 (O'Rourke et al., 1982). A rebar or iron pipe, 2 in. in diameter by 6 ft long is driven down to nearly flush with ground surface. The top 4-ft section of the hole around the pipe is enlarged to 1 ft in diameter and grouted with concrete. The most sophisticated type of monument is shown in Fig. 7.2 (Conroy and Gyannaty, 1983a). It consists of two hollow steel pipes. The inner I-in. pipe, 10 ft. long is enclosed by a 2-in. pipe at the upper 5-ft. interval. The gap between pipes is filled with foam to isolate the inner pipe from external environmental effects. The bottom of the inner pipe can either remain open or be sealed with a cap, depending on whether the ground is dry or wet. 7.2.2 MONUMENT ARRANGEMENT AND SURVEY LINES The monuments are installed strategically to form survey lines. Three basic types of monument arrangements are shown in Fig. 7.3. Figs. 7.3a and 7.3b are for single and multiple panels respectively; Fig. 7.3~ is mainly for research purposes with multiple survey lines both in longitudinal and transverse directions. This is extremely useful for defining the distributions of ground deformation, as shown in Figs. 2.10 and 2.11. Basically there are two types of survey lines: the whole basin survey line which extends across the panel width or length (e.g., lines R, R, in Fig. 7.3 a&b), and the half basin survey line which covers approximately half of the panel width or length (e.g., lines R, F in Fig. 7.3 &b). Survey lines are generally straight and linear. They should be located on the major crosssections of the subsidence basin. Survey lines must extend beyond the edge of the opening for a sufficient distance so that the edges of the subsidence basin can be determined accurately. The minimum distance from the edge of the opening must be [ ] where h = mining depth, [ ] = angle of draw, and [ ] = 5 to 7 times monument spacing for whole basin surveys, or 8 to 10 times the monument spacing for half basin surveys. There must be at least two controlling monuments at each end of each survey line. Controlling monuments must be located beyond the influence of underground mining. The spacing of the monuments ranges from 15 to 200 ft. The UK National Coal Board (NCB, 1975) recommended a spacing equivalent to 0.20 of the mining depth. Peng and Geng (1982) recommended that the maximum monument spacing be dependent on mining depths as follows:
