The design of the settling pond for the Malvern Hills opencast coal project was based on a primary requirement to control runoff and sediment generated from the immediate 6 ha mine catchment, which included two seepages from old underground workings. The pond has been particularly effective in controlling turbidity in the outflow water, with the consent limit of 50 NTU being met on all but one occasion and normal levels of discharge less than 10 NTU. Water quality testing carried out at the time of consenting indicated that there were no acid-generation issues with the proposed mine site in dominant mudstone strata of the Broken River Formation, and that water from the old mine workings was near-neutral in terms of pH and well-buffered. However, it became apparent over the very dry summer of 2003 - 2004 that slaking of the exposed mudrocks in the mine batters was resulting in significant acidity generation, and outflow pH levels were well below the consent limit of 6.5 during and following periods of rainfall. Although these acidity problems have been remediated in the short-term by the use of lime products, it is clear that a programme of lithotype characterisation for AMD should have been undertaken and this has now been implemented. Design of long-term acid drainage control measures is being carried out, and will probably be based around the use of hydrated lime for pH control with enhancement of natural wetlands.

In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross-section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Blast-furnace practice in France is determined more or less by the character of the ores used. Some French ores are siliceous and others are calcareous, therefore by proper burdening a self-fluxing mix can be used. This is not always done, as, for instance, at the Caen furnaces of the Société Métallurgique de Normandie, where the Soumont ore of Normandy is used, which is a carbonate. This ore is crushed and calcined at the mines, yielding a product that is porous and well sized for blast-furnace consumption. The lines of the Caen furnaces are given in Fig. 1. Originally these furnaces had 16 tuyeres; six are plucked and these tuyeres are set in the lower part of the bosh. Operating data on these furnaces are given in Table 1. The release of fluid inclusions has a strong potential for the unintentional activation of pyrite during flotation. The present study aims to characterize fluid inclusions in a natural pure pyrite. The results indicate that a certain amount of fluid inclusions exist in the pyrite. The fluid inclusions assume a variety of shapes, including long strips, oval shapes and irregular shapes, with sizes that range from a few microns to dozens of microns. From the EDS results of hollow positions that resulted from the fracture of the fluid inclusions on the pyrite surface, certain amounts of Al, Cr, C, O, Ag and Cu were clearly detected; these elements were not detected in FeS2 pyrite itself. The contents of the inclusions were released into solution when the sample was subjected to a grinding process. Under experimental conditions of 2 g of pyrite cleaned in 40 mL of pure deionized water under an inert atmosphere, the concentrations of Cu, Fe, Cl- and SO4 2- released from the inclusions reached concentrations of 3.29 × 10-6, 32.52 × 10-6, 51.57 × 10-6 and 75.90 × 10-6 mol/L, respectively. These values are significantly greater than those from the experimental nonoxidative and oxidative dissolution of the pyrite. The fluid inclusions of pyrite were, therefore, concluded to represent the dominant sources of Cu, Fe, Cl- and SO4 2- in the aqueous solution. The present investigation provides a new understanding of the source of the unavoidable metal ions in the pulp and may benefit understanding of the flotation theory and environmental geochemistry.

Recycled cement paste (RCP) is a kind of CaO-rich recourse, which is separated and recycled from waste concrete. Due to its chemical composition, RCP could partially replace lime as a flux and be loaded into electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking process. Rapid RCP assimilation and liquid slag formation have significant effects on EAF steelmaking process. In this study, the dissolution behaviours of RCP and lime at temperatures of 1400°C to 1500°C were investigated using static dissolution experiment. The dissolution rate, interfacial microstructure, as well as dissolution mechanisms were discussed. It was found that the dissolution rate of RCP was much higher than that of lime. RCP could be completely dissolved into slag in 60 secs at 1500°C. The dissolution rate of lime was in range of 3.910-4 g/(cm2ꞏs) to 2.610-3 g/(cm2ꞏs), while that for RCP was in range of 1.510-3 g/(cm2ꞏs) to 4.910-3 g/(cm2ꞏs). As for lime dissolution, a dense layer of dicalcium silicate (C2S) generated at the dissolution interface, and the diffusion of Ca2+ in C2S layer was the limited step for lime dissolution. Some of calcium ferrite could be observed at the interface between lime and C2S layer. As for the RCP dissolution, there is no obvious product layer of C2S formed at the dissolution interface, Fe2+ continuously diffused into RCP layer during the dissolution, and small amount of FeOꞏMgO solid solution generated and gathered at the dissolution interface. The dissolution rate of RCP in EAF slag was quite higher than that of lime, partially add RCP as flux in EAF could accelerate the slag formation process.

Building indicators that respond to all stakeholders' needs is a time-consuming and complex exercise, with certain questions still unsolved. The aim of the current three-year research project, carried out in partnership between BRGM’s Mineral Resources Division and C3ED, is to propose a top-down / bottom-up indicators building methodology that combines conception and coordination methods and a participative approach. The tool-design phase is based partly on a comparative analysis of existing international initiatives according to different criteria (objective, observation scale, framework, etc.). The study of two African mining projects will provide the opportunity to confront the conceptual aspects with reality in the field. Careful consideration of the participants’ suggestions will result in a set of indicators that can be easily understood and adopted by all stakeholders. The final objective is to measure the impact of a mining site on a local, regional and national sustainable development frame, throughout the full life cycle of a mine.

Oil and gas activity reached a higher peak in Indiana during 1940 than for any like period during the past decade. Major activity, as during 1939, was in the southwestern part of the state, the Indiana portion of the Eastern Interior Coal Basin, where most of the increase was due to field drilling in previously proven areas. The amount of wildcat drilling was about the same as for 1939. No new fields of any apparent consequence were discovered during the year, with the possible exception of the College pool, in southwest Posey County. Only one well had been completed in this area at the end of the year. About 10 ft. of saturated Aux Vases sandstone was drilled in this well and the initial production was I00 bbl. of oil a day. Other discoveries during the year 1940 include: St. Thomas, in southwestern Knox County, where four McClosky wells, ranging from I00 to 300 bbl. a day initially, were com-pleted; Buff kin, in central Posey County, with 11 oil wells and 5 gas wells completed; and new developments in two old areas —Randolph County (part of the old Trenton field) and Gentryville, northwestern Spencer County, where some oil was found many years ago. The St. Thomas field proved disappoint-ing, with very spotty production from the McClosky horizon of the St. Genevieve limestone at a depth of about 1875 ft. The discovery well flowed 362 bbl. a day ini-tially. At the end of the year the field was pretty well outlined by dry holes and some inside locations were dry. The Buffkin pool also proved spotty, with production from shallow Pennsylvanian sands and from the Basal Pennsylvanian Mansfield sandstone, the latter at a depth of approximately I175 ft., with small production from the Cypress sandstone of Chester age. Oil wells in this pool are small, ranging from 25 to 75 bbl. a day. The Randolph County area, on the east side of the Trenton gas field, showed some promise for a commercial gas field, with four completed gas wells having cumulative initial flows of about 1,200,ooo cu. ft. a day. The area appar-ently was not depleted during the Trenton boom at the turn of the century, since casing pressures are about as high as the virgin pressure in the old field. Elsewhere the pressure has dropped as low as 5 pounds. The Griffin field received most of the drilling during 1940, with 163 completed oil wells. This field now covers about 3200 acres on the Indiana side of the Wabash River and is not as yet completely delimited. It produced the major part of Indiana's oil during the year—a total of 3,594,000 bbl. At the end of 1940, there were 253 producing wells in Griffin. New Harmony had five completions for a total of 24. The Rockport field, in Spencer County, continued to be actively developed and had a total of 45 gas wells and 9 oil wells at the end of the year. Oil in commercial quantities had not been found in the field previous to 1940. Total gas production for the year was 394,470,000 cubic feet. "A new method for separating inclusions from a molten metal using a high magnetic field has been proposed. The principle of this method based on the magnetization force has been confirmed in experiments of separating intermetallic compounds imitating inclusions from molten Al-Si-Mn-Fe and Al-Si alloys. In order to measure a magnetic susceptibility, the Gouy's method has been so modified by using a super-conducting magnetic as to work in a high temperature up to 1473K. A theoretical expression for the magnetization force, which is indispensable to evaluate the magnetic susceptibility, has been derived. The magnetization forces acting on intermetallic compounds which were used in the magnetic separation were measured over the range of liquidous to solidous temperatures and the magnetic susceptibilities of the intermetallic compounds were obtained from measured magnetization forces by use of the theoretical expression.I. IntroductionRecent developments in the technology of super-conducting magnets have given rise to the circumstance that a high magnetic field over a relatively large space is readily available without liquid helium. Then, it has been found that a high magnetic field provides magnetic effects to nonmagnetic substances and various interesting phenomena have been reported in the broad science fields of physics, chemistry and biology1). The force is in proportion to the product of magnetic field strength, its gradient and susceptibility so that a precipitated substance can be separated from a molten metal based on the difference between susceptibilities of a substance and a melt. This is a basic principle of the magnetic separation. So far the application of the magnetic separation has been limited to the separation of ferromagnetic substances from a nonmagnetic medium. A high magnetic field, however, has enabled to separate nonmagnetic substances from a nonmagnetic medium.In this study, a new method to separate inclusions from a molten metal using a high magnetic field has been proposed. Land rehabilitation at Golden Cross is reviewed, 8 years after mine closure in 1997/98, from the perspectives of a Peer Reviewer (land rehabilitation) and a Regional Council Officer (Resource Consents compliance). Land rehabilitation items we discuss include: management of restored pastures, native plantings (on-site riparian and block plantings and off-site environmental riparian enhancement plantings), wetlands (on-site tailings lake and sediment ponds littoral zone plantings, and basement of the open pit; and off-site wetlands enhancement plantings), pine plantations on-site and on surrounding land, stabilization of the Tailings Lake Embankment (landslide) and Open Pit capping, capping of acid-mine-rock, stability of discharge channels, buildings and amenities, public access for recreation, educational uses, and future management of the site. Pest control has helped to conserve the rare and endangered HochstetterÆs (Leiopelma hochstetteri) and ArcheyÆs (L. archeyi) frogs, and a regionally significant stand of rare swamp maire (Syzygium maire) has been conserved and fenced.

Cyanidation of gold ore results in formation not only of Na[Au(CN)2], but also cyanometallate complexes of some transition metals. During subsequent gold extraction from such solutions and pulps, using activated carbons (??), a number of problems arise. An effective solution of the problem is not possible without detailed knowledge of the interaction mechanism of transition metals cyanide complexes with AC particles. The chemical properties of AC particles and graphene, saturated with [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3), were studied by XPS, ESR, SQUID, and DFT. The obtained results were compared with the data on AC adsorption of anionic form of Ag(I), Au(I), Cd(II), Hg(II), Cr(III), Fe(II), Fe(III), Co(III), Rh(III), Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II) and Pt(IV) cyanide complexes. The adsorption of [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3) on AC from aqueous solutions in air is accompanied with oxidation of ?u(I) atoms. Besides, Cu(II) and Cu(III) compounds were found on AC surface. Quantum-chemical calculations confirmed the possibility of formation of Cu(I) complex with carbene-like sites of AC. The reactions of [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3) complexes and aromatic carbenes and their cation-radical were theoretically studied at DFT PBE level to obtain the information on adsorption of cyanometallate complexes on AC. Carbenes with different fragments were regarded as a model of activated carbons, which have free edge sites with paired o and n electrons. It was shown that [Cu(CN)2]- bounds firmly with triplet carbene, if one Cu-CN bond breaks. The dissociation process occurs through a multi-step spin-crossing mechanism to reduce total spin multiplicity of the metal-carbene complex. The behavior of transition element complexes in contact with AC in aqueous solutions is determined by the following characteristics: geometrical structure of ionic complexes; nature of ligands bonded to the central atom; concentration of reactive oxygen species in solution and its pH; nature of binding sites of AC.

ONE of the phases of mining wide ore-bodies, such as are found in Broken Hill, is the laying-out and design of the sill floor gangway timber, When, in the above operation, a detail has to be repeated frequently, it is desirable in the interests of efficiency that that detail should be standardized as far as possible. Before arriving at a standard design e.g., a crosscut layout-it would seem necessary to compare its strength with some other unit of timber and see that the general design is at least as strong as the unit that has been taken for comparative purposes, In these notes no attempt is made to calculate the stresses to which timber underground is subjected, but merely to draw a comparison between the relative strengths of the various cross sections of timber in common use underground.It has been assumed for the purposes of comparison that the milling exerts pressure in a vertical plane only, and is uniformly distributed over any area. Lead substrate anodes are widely used in the electroplating and electrolytic field. However, with the change of internal stress, the oxide films are gradually generated on the surface of lead anode. Their structure and stress properties were studied during the oxidation by means of Raman spectra, XRD, SEM. The result showed that the diffraction peaks of lead were mainly found at the initial oxidation stage. With increasing oxidation time, Pb diffraction peaks were weakened and the diffraction peaks of PbO/PbO2 strengthened remarkably. When the oxidation time was above 10 min, monoclinic PbCrO4 was also generated in the oxide film with CrO4 2 ions solution as electrolyte. Raman spectra revealed that Raman peaks of PbO/PbO2 were gained. In addition, Raman peaks of PbCrO4 at 830–840 cm−1 were found using the CrO4 2 ions as electrolyte. Based on the relationship of the internal stress of oxide film and Raman peaks shift, PbO/PbO2 induced obvious stress generation in CrO4 2 ion electrolyte. The nucleation style of oxidation film was 3D progressive nucleation at first. After the peak current, it turned to be 3D instantaneous nucleation. Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.

The Indiana Limestone Company has developed an insulated, thin and comparatively light-weight pane 1 suitable for use as a spandrel panel in a curtain wall. The panel is about four inches thick and is composed of limestone backed with insulation. The inner surface of the insulation is protected with asbestos-cement board or a metal pan, depending on the type of insulation, building-code requirements and appearance (if the surface is left exposed). The limestone is cut to the size of the spandrel openings and the insulation and backup is applied in the mill ready to be shipped and in- stalled in the wall grid, A mortarless and waterproof joint with the metal frame components is achieved through the use of neoprene, thiokol, and caulking, The limestone is "dirt-proofed" (waterproofed) in the mill to slow down discoloration. The panel weighs more than some presently used materials. However, ILCO's architects and engineers have found that curtain wall systems capable of withstanding imposed wind loads are made up of sections large enough to carry this extra load of stone with little or no modification to the size of the metal frame. Limestone, a traditionally sound material, can be used in this new way without losing any of its natural qualities of dimensional stability, resistance to fire, and permanence.

The empirical rock failure criteria play an important role in predicting the mechanical behavior of rocks, since affecting parameters on the behavioral properties of rocks are complex and numerous. Usually the empirical failure criteria are obtained by statistical methods, namely by means of fitting the mathematical function onto the experimental data. For evaluation and verification of the results, however, the quality and accuracy of the fit must be considered. This paper studies the efficiency and accuracy of conventional empirical rock failure criteria using a new approach, which is based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude on the constant parameters of each criterion. The approach adopted here, is based on the combination of some parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), type of function, degree of freedom and the confidence level of constants. Correlation coefficient (R2) is then a comprehensive test and can be used effectively for comparison and accuracy of empirical rock failure criteria.

The increasing depth, mechanisation and distance of working areas from surface connections places an ever greater contaminant burden on ventilation airflows. Some British Coal mines are already experiencing significant problems in providing adequate climatic conditions in the working areas and have had to introduce air conditioning. Previous work has shown that in mines of low to moderate virgin strata temperature the application of controlled district recirculation could serve to improve climatic conditions at the working area.

Cementation Foundations Skanska Ltd encountered many significant challenges in designing and constructing the foundations for the LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) tanks and associated structures at the Isle of Grain, Kent, UK. With LNG cargo ship levels fixed by the adjacent English Channel, the platform could not exceed critical thickness in order to achieve final grade level, so a safe and efficient working platform for construction equipment on extremely poor alluvial soils was designed and installed. The detailed pile design also required particular analysis of the pile group behaviour and considered seismic load cases not usually associated with UK pile design. Continuous flight auger (CFA) piles were the chosen foundation solution and design was verified through preliminary and working pile tests both axially and horizontally. Contaminated land and existing foundations from a previous oil terminal meant that removal of spoil was extremely costly so specific measures were taken to minimise the off-site disposal. The management of a package of general Civil Engineering in addition to the piling scope, coupled with an unrelenting production program has forced a raising of the bar for this foundation technique.

A risk study was carried out at the Cerrejon coal mine in order to assess the impacts of pit slope failure in terms of safety of personnel and destruction of equipment with economic consequences. Results of the assessment enabled the definition of risk treatment requirements and the identification of key aspects to consider in a risk treatment plan. The approach included the following tasks: (1) Assessment of the total probability of failure (POF) representative of the stability conditions of typical footwall and highwall slopes. For this purpose, stability analyses were carried out to define the Design POF, which accounts for the variability of strength parameters and represents the normal conditions considered for slope design. Strength parameters for highwall slope analysis were derived from borehole data obtained with a geotechnical drilling campaign. The Total POF was estimated through the use of Source Response Diagrams (SRD) in order to incorporate other sources of uncertainty not accounted for, like changes in geometry, variability of rock conditions due to geological or operational factors, changes in groundwater conditions and occurrence of seismic events. (2) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure on safety of personnel. The assessment was performed through the use of event tree analysis to establish the probability of fatality caused by slope failures, from the Total POF defined in the previous task. This analysis required the evaluation of personal exposure to slope failures. Also, the assessment included benchmarking of acceptability criteria in terms of probability of fatality and the evaluation of options of risk mitigation to comply with these criteria. (3) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure in terms of economic losses associated with impact on equipment. The analysis included the evaluation of equipment exposure to slope failures, and it was performed through event tree analysis to establish the probability of an economic loss associated to total or partial lost of equipment, from the total POF value defined in the first task. The magnitude of the economic losses was estimated from the costs of damaged equipment, lost production and site restoration. Options of risk mitigation were also examined in terms of economic losses. The risk assessment process applied to the Cerrejón mine showed how the system can be applied to evaluate the consequences of failure in terms of personnel safety and economics and to identify the more adequate risk mitigation options. The system can be an extremely powerful tool in the mine design process and provides the opportunity to rationalize the geotechnical information requirements, once the risk criteria have been defined by management. The main purpose of this paper is to present the process; therefore, the emphasis has been put on the methodology followed rather than on the actual results obtained.

"In recent years the recovery of copper from low grade oxide ores has received widespread attention. The cost of treating such ores using conventional technology, such as milling and flotation, is frequently prohibitively high and copper recovery is generally low. The introduction of heap leaching, solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) has resulted in high recoveries, good copper cathode quality and low production costs. This technology has now been successfully applied on a worldwide basis.This paper reviews the various process and design options and gives approximate capital and operating costs for a 1.0% copper ore.INTRODUCTIONAs a result of the low copper prices that prevailed for much of the last two decades, aggressive attempts were made by the industry to cut operating costs. Under such circumstances heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning, to recover low cost copper from oxide ores, has received particular attention and ultimately widespread acceptance.Low grade copper ore (typically containing less than 1.0% Cu), which could not be economically treated by other methods, is placed on heaps and leached with dilute solutions of sulphuric acid. The copper rich, pregnant solution, drains from the heap into a collecting pond and is pumped to a solvent extraction plant where it is purified and upgraded. The resulting solution, termed the pregnant electrolyte, passes to the electrowinning section where the copper is recovered as high grade cathodes and sulphuric acid is regenerated, (Figure 1).This paper specifically describes the processing of copper oxides. Other copper minerals such as chalcocite and chrysocolla are also leached by dilute solutions of sulphuric acid. In practice the oxide minerals are frequently associated to varying degrees with less easily leached sulphides, such as chalcopyrite. In some cases, once the oxidized capping of the ore body is removed, the oxides are totally replaced by more refractory sulphides. Under these circumstances the leaching recovery is significantly reduced. However the principles described here for solvent extraction and electrowinning are also applicable to solutions received from heaps containing sulphide minerals, which are leached more slowly and involve bacterially induced reactions."
