When the United States Geological Survey began operations at the coal-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, it had already outlined a comprehensive plan for the systematic study of coals, lignites, and other mineral fuels with reference to their suitability for particular purposes and the methods by which they could be utilized most efficiently. Recognizing the need of information on the relative economy of producer gas as compared with steam for power purposes and the lack of comparable tests of American coals in the gas producer, the Geological Survey undertook investigations of the merits of different coals as producer fuel for the purpose of promoting efficiency in the utilization of the nation's fuel supplies. These investigations were carried on at St. Louis, Mo., and, later, at Norfolk, Va., and Pittsburg, Pa. The aet of Congress approved May 16, 1910, transferred the fueltesting work being carried on by the Geological Survey to the Bureau of Mines. This bureau is conducting producer-gas tests at P~ttsburg, Pa., and is publishing and distributing reports relating to all the fuel tests made by the Survey. These investigations into the possibility of generating producer gas in a commercial way for power purposes from the various fuels of the country have been associated with steaming, briquetting, coking, and other tests, all of which supplemented an examination into the nature, extent, and distribution of the fuels. The tests have all been made with carefully selected representative samples and carload lots of materials procured specially for the purpose by experienced collectors.

Young's modulus doto ore presented for W, Mo. Ta. V, Cr. Ni, Ti, and Zr as a function of temperature up to about 0.7 of the melting points. A plot of reduced temperature us reduced modulus produces a general correlation except for titanium and zirconium. Young's modudlus data for some representatiue commercial graphites are given up to 2400°C. All results were obtained from longitudinal resonance-frequency measzrrements of 4-in. long samples, corrected for simultaneously measured thermal expansion. Comparison of poly crystalline and single-crystal tungsten behavior indicates that all the observed modulus values are frequencv -dependent at the higher temperatures. STATIC measurements of elastic properties of materials at elevated temperatures are extremely difficult to make since the elastic behavior is obscured by relatively large first-stage creep effects. Dynamic methods which avoid this difficulty by utilizing the measurement of the resonance frequency of a simple vibrational mode have been described in the 1iterature.l-3 The authors have extended the operating temperature range of this type of measurement to above 2000°C and have described the equipment elsewhere.~ The Young's modulus data presented here were obtained with this equipment, using samples about 4 in. long and 1/4 in. diam, supported horizontally at the center and excited to the fundamental longitudinal resonance frequency. Young's modulus was calculated by the formula: E = 4f2f2p where E = Young's modulus, / = frequency, 1 = length, and p = density. Dilatometric data were obtained simultaneously by optical measurements of the change of length of the sample. For the metals tested, an attempt was made to obtain modulus values that would be representative of the pure, strain-free, randomly oriented material. All of the graphites studied exhibited a high degree of elastic anisotropy, while the method assumes an isotropic homogeneous material. However , when the values for Young's modulus obtained for AUC graphite were compared with those taken from static measurements at room temperature they were found to be only about 4 pet higher. This is excellent agreement considering the low precision of modulus calculations from stress-strain curves. The difficulty in using data of apparent Young's modulus for anisotropic materials arises when the attempt is made to use these data and shear-modulus data to obtain Poisson's ratio. The results are usually meaningless and sometimes absurd.' RESULTS Table I lists the sources, impurity content, thermal history, and dilatometric constants of the metal samples that were investigated. All the metal samples were tested under a vacuum of 1 to 5 x 10-5 Torr. Where our dilatometric data agreed with previously published data, the table lists the previous values and the literature reference. Where no reference is given, the constants were determined from our dilatometric data. Table II presents the modulus data in units of millions of psi as a function of temperature in degrees centigrade. The numbers were obtained from curves fitted to the experimental data. For some types of calculations, such as those attempting to correlate creep data, the slope of the modulus curve is of interest, and this information also is reported in Table 11. It is always tempting to try to fit physical-property data into some general pattern and then use this pattern to predict the behavior of other similar materials. The general pattern for an elastic modulus of a metal seems to be a linear deoro- with increasing temperature Over the range between 0.1 and 0.4 of the melting temperature, then a progressive1y decreasing value up to the melting point. O objetivo geral foi produzir e caracterizar a microestrutura de um compósito abrasivo nanoestruturado no sistema D-Si, via sinterização cíclica de alta pressão e alta temperatura (HPHT). A sinterização cíclica em alta pressão e alta temperatura de compósitos foi feita a partir de uma mistura de 70% diamante e 30% de Si como ligante, o qual foi moído por moagem de alta energia sendo então partícula nanométricaso. A sinterização foi realizada por 1 a 4 ciclos de pressão (P) de 7GPa- 4GPa e temperatura (T) 1600°C-300°C, para um tempo (t) de 1min. As análises de difrações de raios X mostraram a ocorrência, além do diamante, de SiC, FeSi e grafite. As análises de MEV e EDS mostraram uma distribuição uniforme dos cristais de diamante na matriz de SiC. A análise da região de fratura das amostras mostrou que todos os cristais de diamante foram abrangidos pelo ligante, ou seja, a liga formada a partir da interação de carbono e de silício. Finalmente, conclui-se que esta pesquisa aprimorou a técnica de produção de MCDs para uso futuro em bits de brocas de perfuração de poços de petróleo.

Evidence is produced below to show that the carbide "Mn,C," reported by Kw,and ersson' is really a mixture of two carbides. One is an Fe-Mn carbide which is probably isomorphous with hexagonal Mn15C4, reported by Bouchand and Pruchart.' The othev is a tetragonul Fe-Mn carbide with cell dzmensions close to those reported previously by the author3 for an Fe0.1Mno. carbide. IN a recent investigation several Fe-Mn carbide specimens, each weighing about 5 g, were prepared in a manner previously reported.3 Debye-Scherrer X-ray photographs were taken of at least two samples from different parts of each specimen using a 114.6-mm-diam camera. The exposure time was 2 hr using filtered chromium radiation, a tube voltage of 35 kv and a tube current of 10 ma. In the case of one specimen, which contained nominal weight percentages of iron, manganese, and carbon of 9.40, 84. 6,, and 6.0, respectively, duplicate chemical analyses indicated f1.2 and 5.5 wt pct C to be present in the two samples taken of the specimen: no graphitic carbon was detected. One powder-diffraction pattern of this specimen indicated the presence of the tetragons: carbide reported earlier,3 (a = 6.772A, c = 9.427A), plus cementite (O), plus an unknown structure. Union Carbide_ began looking seriously at heap leaching in 1971. At that time some 1.6 million tons of mineral averaging 0.040% U308 were stockpiled at various sites around the Gas Hills, Wyoming, uranium facility. Several alternatives for economically exploiting these reserves were considered and heap leaching seemed the most attractive. At the time, Western Nuclear Inc. was operating a heap leach project nearby in which the low-grade ore was leached with sulfuric acid, the product liquor treated in an on-site solvent extraction circuit, and the stripped product liquor re-acidified and recycled. They were most generous in allowing us to visit their site, answering our questions, and were helpful in discussing the problems associated with heap leaching. They confirmed our belief that, it was possible to operate a heap leach profitably on material too low grade for. conventional milling. Based largely on what we had learned from Western Nuclear's experience, a program was set up involving a laboratory study to determine the characteristics of the mineral stockpiles as related to heap leaching and to conduct a pilot heap leach adjoining our Gas Hills mill. Basically, the pilot heap construction and leach procedure were similar to those described in the literature(1,2) with certain modifications to permit detailed monitoring of the operation. In May, '1972, the decision was made to construct a test heap. The UCC plant at Gas Hills, Wyoming was selected as the most appropriate site for the follow¬ing reasons:

Fly ash from four sources and in certain proportions was shown to assist chemical coagulation of turbid water and settling of chemically induced floc. Fly ash reduced the time required to form the first visible floc, promoted more uniform flocs about 2 mm in diameter, and increased the mean settling rate of floc particles. Also, the addition of fly ash produced denser sludges than those obtained with alum alone. Final turbidities were independent of fly ash particle size and carbon content. Optimum proportions of fly ash additive are given.

"The Kidd Creek metallurgical site has been highly integrated to maximize revenues from its base metals mines. The site's operations include a Concentrator processing 4.3 million tonnes per year of copper-zinc ore, a Copper complex producing 100,000 tonnes per year copper cathode and a Zinc Plant producing 130,000 tonnes per year of zinc metal. To improve operating efficiency with increasing emphasis on productivity, process control, process automation and process optimization have been augmented and expanded during the last decade.New microprocessor based control systems provided the opportunity for the capturing of an expanded number of process related measurements. As supervisory computers were already in place, databases could be generated with only increased disc space and database management programs required. Once the data had been accumulated and stored, a method was then required for handling, screening and sorting large volumes of information in relatively quick and easy terms in order that the stored information could be used. By 1984, a decision to use personal computers for accounting, engineering and management reporting provided the vehicle necessary to handle this data. Using commercially available software, large volumes of stored process data can be downloaded from existing databases, filtered, sorted, analyzed, graphed, displayed, projected, reported and distributed. All this can be performed in very little time."

"Yttria-stabilized zircohia (YSZ) has high potential to be used as solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrolyte. However, the high efficiency of SOFC has not been yet achieved due to the high internal resistance of bulk electrolyte. The resistance becomes lower with the decrease in the electrolyte thickness. Thus, the decrease in electrolyte thickness leads to lower internal resistance. . The aim of this study is as follows: (a) to prepare the thin films of YSZ by inductively-coupled RF plasma-enhanced metal organic chemical vapor deposition (PEMOCVD) process using Zr(t-OC4H9)4,Y(DPMh and oxygeil, and (b) to reveal the relationship between the structural characterizations and the process parameters.1. IntroductionYttia-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has, been widely used as not only heat-resistant materials but also the components in automotive oxygen sensors, electrolytes of solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC)(1)(2) and the buffer layers for the high-temperature superconductor because of its low thermal conductivity, good mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity. However, it is said that the internal resistance of the bulk electrolyte is too high to be appropriate as a solid electrolyte for high-efficient SOFC. The authors believe that the thin YSZ electrolyte can give a high performance to characteristics SOFC, since the internal resistance becomes lower with the decrease of electrolyte thickness. Thus the process technology to prepare YSZ thin films is desirable and must be established.In recent years, the YSZ thin films have been reported by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), thermal CVD using metal chlorides (MC) of ZrCl4 and YC(3)(4), thermal CVD using metal organic compounds (MO)(5)(10) Zr(t-OC4H9)4 and Y(C11H19O2)(11) and plasma-enhanced (PE) CVD using MO. Here, these methods are called MCCVD, MOCVD and PEMOCVD. MCCVD has two disadvantages; a large quantity of chlorinated impurities in deposited films and high processing temperature (> 1273K). This high processing temperature leads to damage of substrates in particular, so the application of this technology is limited. On the other hands, the processing temperature by MOCVD becomes and is lower. Unfortunately, the accurate vapor pressures of these metal organic compounds have not been, known so: that it is difficult to control the composition and the film thickness by MOCVD method well. Moreover, the large amount of carbonic compounds in the films prepared by MOCVD method is produced. However, plasma-effect has been reported to decrease large amount of the carbonic impurities by PEMOCVD. However, PEMOCVD has many reaction parameters in plasma processing; the geometry of experimental apparatus, radio frequency, electronic power input and so on. Thus, the general understanding about the relationship among reaction parameters, the composition and crystal structure of thin deposit film by this method has not yet been established."

Surface-tension measurements for liquid Fe-C-Co and Fe-C-Ni alloys were performed by the sesszle-drop technique at 1350o and 1425°C. Cobalt was shown to he more effective than nickel in lowering the surface tension of Fe-C alloys A minimum value for surface tension of 1640 dynes per cm was found in the Fe-C-Co system at a concentration of 1.5 pet C and 12pet Co. Analysis of these measurements in terms of adsorption and desorption behavior indicated that cobalt and nickel lower surface tension in Fe-C alloys by replacing carbon at the liquid-vapor interface. Comparison of results to date for Fe-C liquid alloys has shown that most substitutional-type elements having about the same atomic diameter as iron also have relatively the same influence on surface tension when present in dilute amounts. It has been shown previously that surface-adsorption behavior in liquid Fe-C ternary alloys is related to the manner in which the ternary addition affects the activity of carbon in the bulk solution.' Certain ternary additions, such as chromium, tending to decrease carbon activity cause adsorption of carbon and chromium to the liquid-vapor interface. Additions, such as silicon, increase the carbon activity, resulting in a desorption of carbon and an adsorption of silicon. Both cases were shown to cause a decrease in surface tension due to adsorption. It is the object of this paper, as part of the writers' continuing interest in the effect of alloying additions on the surface tension of Fe-C alloys, to present and discuss surface-tension data on solutions in the ternary systems Fe-C-Co and Fe-C-Ni. Available activity measurements for these systems in the solid state indicate a strong increase in carbon activity when either nickel or cobalt is added to Fe-C alloys.2, 3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloy compositions used are shown in Table I. These alloys were prepared by vacuum melting in stabilized zirconia crucibles and then vacuum casting into cold-steel molds. The nominal analyses for the alloys used in this investigation are given in Table I. Surface tensions and densities were measured by the sessile-drop method4,5 in conjunction with the tables of Bashforth and bdams.' Specimens were prepared by slicing 1/4-in. cubes from the center of the vacuum-cast ingots and grinding the edges of these cubes until their shapes approximated spheres with flat bottoms. Proper handling techniques, including an acetone rinse immediately before use, assured minimum contamination from sources extraneous to the actual melting. For each experimental run a sample was placed on a BeO plaque and positioned and leveled inside a vacuum induction heating apparatus. The sample and plaque arrangement sat inside a molybdenum tube which acted as the susceptor. Diagrams of this apparatus may be found in the literature.= After heating to temperatures just above the liquidus at pressures of the order of 10-4 to 10- 5 mm Hg, photographs of the drop profile were made using its natural thermal radiation as a light source. Some measurements were made with partial pressures (-1 cm Hg) of a mixture of H2 and He gases. The H2-He atmospheres proved to be necessary at higher nickel contents to retard excessive vaporization losses. Chemical analysis for carbon and the ternary addition was performed for each alloy sample after completion of the experimental run.

One copper Isasmelt furnace has been operated in Xstrata Copper at Mount Isa in Australia since 1992. A thermodynamic model and computer program, CuModel, has been developed to model the distribution behaviors of Cu, Fe, S, O, Ni, Co, Sn, Pb, Zn, As, Sb, Bi, Au and Ag, copper loss in the slag, and heat balance in copper smelting process, matte converting process and copper continuous smelting process. The thermodynamic model has been used to model the key parameters in the control of the copper Isasmelt furnace. The effects of the process parameters on the control of the copper Isasmelt furnace have been predicted and discussed. These process parameters include SiO2/Fe, matte grade, coal, temperature, spec air of feed, oxygen enrichment, and MgO contents in slag.

IT may surprise some of our members to learn, among the industries based on the mineral resources of the United States that of clay now ranks third, being exceeded in value of product only by pig-iron and coal. The present annual value of clay-products exceeds the value of the outputs of gold and silver, and also exceeds the combined values of copper, lead, zinc, aluminum, mercury, antimony and nickel. These facts are shown in Table I. which gives the statistics for the year 1902

A study was made to delineate the dislocation mechanistns controlling prismatic and basal slip at low temperatu.ves in titanium containing approximately 100 ppm interstitial impurities. Mechanical tests were performed on single crystals prepared from electron-beam zone-refined crystal bar by a thermal cycling technique. Measurements were made of critical shear stress and activation volume as functions of temperature. The study revealed that, for prismatic slip, two overlapping thermally activated processes aye rate-controlling below 300°K. From absolute zero to 220°K, reasonable agreement is obtained between experiment and the mechanism which involves overcoming 01. the Peierl's stress by the formation of double kinks in dislocation lines lying in close-packed directions. Between 220°and 300°K prismatic slip is controlled by a difierent thermally activated process which is characterized by a stronger temperature dependence of critical shear stress. Above 300OK, prismatic slip is controlled by an athermal process. Basal slip is controlled by a thermally activated process between 195' and 400°K. An approximate analysis suggests that it is the Peierl's mechanism that is rate-controlling in this range. Below 195°K, the occurrence of mechanical twinning obscures the features of basal slip. Above '400 X, basal slip is controlled by an athermal process. TITANIUM, an hcp metal with a less-than-ideal axial ratio of 1.587, deforms primarily by {1010}( 1210) slip at low temperatures.'-3 The critical shear stress is strongly affected by the presence of interstitial impurities. For example, churchman3 reported that a decrease in the combined nitrogen plus oxygen content from 0.1 to 0.01 pct decreased the critical shear stress for prismatic slip from 9.19 to 1.4 kg per sq mm at room temperature. Basal slip, however, is less strongly affected by interstitials; Churchman's data for {0001}( 1210) slip show a smaller decrease in critical shear stress from 10.90 to 6.3 kg per sq mm at room temperature, for the same decrease in interstitial content. In the present study, an attempt has been made to delineate the dislocation mechanisms controlling prismatic and basal slip in titanium. In view of the strong effects that impurities may have on at least some of these mechanisms, experiments were performed on material of reasonably high purity, so that comparisons could be made with investigations on material of both lower and higher impurity contents. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals were prepared from 1/4-in.-diam electron-beam zone-refined crystal bar, furnished by Materials Research Corp. The analysis of the zone-refined material is given in Table I, indicating that the interstitial content is of the same order as the purer of the two materials investigated by Churchman. The Vickers diamond pyramid hardness number of this material was 85.6. This value agrees quite well with the correlation between hardness and interstitial content proposed by Ogden and Jaffee.4 On the basis of hardness, the material investigated in this study is, therefore, intermediate in purity between that studied by Churchman (Vpn = 97) and that studied by Spangler and Herman (Vpn = 62.4).5 Single crystals were grown by thermal cycling through the a-ß transformation. Two-in.-long by 1/2-in.-diam bars were heat-treated in vacuum for 4 hr at 1160°C. The temperature of the furnace was then lowered to 865°C, and the specimens were maintained at this temperature for 7 days. This procedure was repeated several times, resulting in the growth of individual crystals up to 14 in. in length. Specimens for testing in direct shear along either {l010}(1210) or {0001}(1210) were obtained by electrical-discharge machining. The specimens were in the form of cylinders 1/4 in. in diam by approximately 1/2 in. in length, with a reduced section 1/8 in. in diam and a in. in length. All specimens were electropol-ished subsequent to electrical-discharge machining. The ends of the test specimens were cemented in stainless-steel collars. Shear tests were conducted in an Instron Tensile Tester at various temperatures from 4.2° to 508°K. Measurements were made of critical shear stress and activation volume. The latter measurements were performed by measuring the change in flow stress upon cycling the strain rate between ?1 = 2.62 x 10-3 per sec and ?2 = 2.62 x 10-4 per sec. Some technical developments of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program which are of general application in geochemical exploration are being studied. Results of stream water and suspended and bottom sediment analyses are compared for an area near Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Variations of uranium content of water samples with time in the North Carolina Piedmont are seen to correlate with rainfall. Ground water samples from coastal and piedmont areas were analyzed for helium. All media sampled provide useful information when properly analyzed and interpreted as part of a total geological analysis of an area.

The finely dispersed kerogen particulates present in the dilute suspension can be coagulated with the aid of a hydrophobic organism, Mycobacterium Dhlei. The initial coagulation and aggregation are strongly dependent on pH and organism concentration, the isoelectric points of oil shale kerogen and Mycobacterium phlei are at pH 3 and 1.8 respectively. As a result the aggregation is rapid around pH 3. Preliminary results show that it is quite possible to use microorganisms for enhanced dewatering of kerogen concentrate produced by froth. flotation.

"In 1973 Brenda Mines Limited first investigated the potential use of a process computer to aid in the development of a control system for the concentrator grinding circuit. This initial study and its results are reviewed (1) in a previous paper.Since that time the computer system and its applications have been expanded. After the initial success of grinding circuit control, a second process computer was purchased to function as a back-up device. The two processors are currently operated in a foreground-background mode which allows extensive use of the computing facility for engineering and development work as well as operator training.Because of the relative ease of expansion, the computer has been incorporated into a flotation control system as well as an electrical peak power savings program.It is the purpose of this paper to review the successful application:; of the process computer and to indicate applications which are envisaged for the future."

The sub-level blasthole benching method of mining has been proved to be economical at Willroy Mines. How-ever due to the nature and attitude of the wall rock, this method is susceptible to serious hanging-wall dilution of the ore. Attempts to solve the dilution problem by various means were not satisfactory until long Stressteel bars were employed as rock bolts. The adoption of this de-vice does not require any special skill, and has become routine in the under-ground operation. Since the inception of this method, the dilution of the ore has been greatly reduced and the ov1!r-all costs of controlling this dilution are much lower. INTRODUCTION T HIS is a report describing the successful use of long Stressteel bars as rock bolts in preventing l1anging-wall failure and consequent dilution in open stopes. Open-pit mining is sometimes conducted in areas where the artesian pressures contained in aquifers underlying the pit's floor are great enough to cause floor heave. In order to reduce this pressure several methods are commonly used. One of these methods is a pressure relief well or depressurization wick. The wick consists of a borehole which is filled with gravel and cased at the surface. The wick is allowed to flow freely, thus reducing pressure near its location. The spacing and depth of these wicks can be determined by a simple analytical and graphical technique which considers the weight of material overlying the aquifer and the artesian force within the aquifer. An example of the technique using data from a Colombian coal mine is presented.
