A program to investigate the effects of hardened washers on the uniformity of roof bolt tension and the resulting ground control in an underground mine was carried out. The complete roof bolt installation and roof bolt loads, mine convergence, and bed separation were monitored for a period of five months. The results show no evidence to support or refute the theory that mechanical roof bolts offer better support when they are installed with a high uniformity of tension. Also shown is the fact that if the bolts are installed with a maximum deviation from the mean torque of ±15% the addition of hardened washers significantly improved the uniformity of the installed tensions in the roof bolts.

Despite this progress in the manner of coal mining, it continues today as a hazardous, toilsome, grimy task. Coal mining per se has advanced at a greater and more rapid stride in the past 25 years than the mining of any other mineral, but the basic method is fundamentally the same as it was the first day a miner took a pick into his hands many centuries ago. "The paper formulates an evaluation procedure for examining the effects of location on the economics of developing mineral deposits. This methodology is applied to assess locational aspects of Nova Scotia's competitive position f or mine development relative to other Canadian regions and provinces. The appraisal concerns two representative mine development opportunities, a medium-size open-pit tungsten deposit, and a small underground gold deposit. The influence of regional economic conditions is initially assessed. Then, the consequences of taxation are isolated. Finally, the combined impact of regional and taxation conditions is examined. SettingThe economic potential of mining may be assessed in a number of ways. One approach, increasingly used for both corporate planning and government policy purposes, is to evaluate the competitive position of an actual or potential mineral producer in the international marketplace relative to other suppliers.Such examinations of competitive position vary from cost league comparisons of breakeven costs for operating mines, through the assessment of medium-term costs associated with developing new mine capacity, to long-term evaluations of the economics of mineral supply from the start of exploration. The complexity of the analysis increase s with the scope and timeframe of interest. Many factors are involved. One component of competitive position is the quality of the mineral resources available. Other key factors include existing technology, wage and salary rates, labour productivity, the cost of capital, infra structure requirements, distances from sources of materials supply an d to mineral markets, management attributes, organizational efficiency, government mineral policies (particularly taxation), and inflation and exchange rates. The paper fits within this competitive position framework.The variable economic conditions which exist within Canada have a direct bearing on the viability of mine development and, thereby, on mineral exploration potential. The paper examines locational aspects of Nova Scotia 's competitive position."

Computer programers are often required to make modifications to unfamiliar Fortran routines. This Bureau of Mines report describes a computer program designed to aid the programer in such a situation by reorganizing: Fortran routines. This reorganization includes a sequential renumbering of the routine's statement numbers, a sequential renumbering, and relocation of format statements, an alphanumeric reordering of dimensioned and typed variables, a uniform pattern of text spacing, and a sequential numbering of the records in the final Fortran routine. The computer program has been extensively tested by the author and has proved to be a valuable tool for reorganizing Fortran routines developed under contract and later utilized by the Bureau, and for preparing routines for publication.

The wire-rope hoisting conditions at the mines of the Anaconda Coppcr Mining Co. in Butte, Mont, are very severe because of the conditions under which it is necessary to operate. A study was made, in the fall of 1919, for the purpose of changing these conditions in order to obtain longer rope and sheave life. There are at present in Butte hoisting engines equipped with wire rope as follows: 9 main hoists using flat ropes. 7 main hoists using 1 1/2-in. rope. 5 main hoists using 11/4-in. rope. 6 shafts using 11/8-in. rope. 2 chippy hoists using 11/4-in. rope. 9 chippy hoists using 11/8-in. rope. 15 shafts using 1-in. rope. 7 shafts using 7/8-in. rope. 1 shaft using 3/4-in. rope. In addition, there are a number of sinking engines wing 5/8-in, 3/4-in., 7/8-in., and 1-in. (15.9, 10, 22, and 25 mm) rope. THe flat ropes run from 1/2 by 71/2 in. (12.7 by 1905 mm.) to-3/8 by 4 1/2-in (9.5 by 114 mm.) and are used on the older hoisting engines, which arc set comparatively close to the shaft. Because of swelling and moving ground at some of the shafts, these ropes present certain difficulties ill operation that are more pronounced than with round ropes; they are, therefore, being superseded by round ropes as newer engines are being installed. They are, however, much more easily inspected and repaired than round ropes. In general, the practice in Butte is to use hoisting engines equipped with 12-ft. (3 7 m.) cast-iron drums, smooth faced, for 11/2-in. rope and 6-ft. cast-iron drums, smooth faced, lagged with 3/8-in. steel plate for 11/4 l1/8 and 1-in. This paper describes a Mixed Integer Linear Programming model that was developed for planning the coal operations at Mountain Coals, Inc., in Kentucky. The model incorporates the use of stockpiles as practiced and allows the operator to find the least cost combination of raw coal feeds, washing densities and blending to produce the different quality coals as required by the coal contracts.

Application of the concepts of nu-cleation and growth to the analysis of experimental transformation data has led to valuable descriptions of phase transformations, an outstanding example being the transformation austenite —* pearlite which has been examined with particular care by Mehl and co-workers.&apos;-5 In addition to the pearlite transformation, the proeutectoid fer-rite and proeutectoid carbide transformations are known to proceed by nucleation and growth. Martensite, on the contrary, until recently was thought to form by a mechanism involving neither nucleation nor growth; however, extension of standard nucleation theory6 suggests that martensite, bain-ite, and the other products of austenite decomposition all grow from nuclei in the parent phase. The theory that martensite forms by nucleation and growth is strongly supported by recent experimental work of Kurdjumov and Maksimova.7 The concepts of nucleatioli and growth have been fruitful also in providing a sound basis for quantitative theoretical treatments of the kinetics of phase transformations. For example, Volmer and Weber8 and Becker and Döring9 developed the theory of nucleation from fundamental considerations to a point where excellent agreement was obtained with the results of experiments on the condensation of supercooled vapors. As a result of their analysis, the kinetics of vapor-liquid transformations now can be predicted. It seems probable that application of the theories of nucleation and growth to a quantitative study of austenite decomposition similarly will clarify the nature of the individual transfor: mations involved, and will enable the calculation of austenite transformation kinetics. In the present paper, the theories of nucleation and growth are applied to the austenite ? martensite transformation in steels. The analysis begins with a discussion of nucleation in single component systems. Martensite appears to be coherent with the parent austenite, hence the nucleation theory is modified to include the effects of elastic distortion. Nucleation in the two component iron-carbon system then is discussed, for most steels are primarily alloys of these two elements. Finally, M. temperatures and martensite transformation curves are calculated for each of several alloy steels of varying carbon and chromium content, and are compared with those determined experimentally by Lyman and Troiano10 and Harris and Cohen.11 Nucleation Theory NUCLEATION IN SINGLE COMPONENT SYSTEMS6,12-14 The work required for reversible formation of a region of phase within the parent a phase is expressed conveniently as the sum of two terms: W1 = Aa, the product of the area of the interface and the interfacial free energy, and W2 = VAf, the product of the volume of the region and the free energy increase per unit volume associated with the transformation. The total work is therefore W = Aa + VAf. When a is more stable than ß, Af is positive and W increases without limit as the volume increases. The transformation a ?ß does not occur. It is nevertheless true that small regions of phase ß enjoy temporary existence here and there in the a. The equilibrium number of ß regions of given size is proportional to exp(— W/kT) per unit volume of a, assuring that larger (ß regions occur with diminishing probability. When a is less stable than ß, Af is negative and W passes through a maximum as V increases. Assuming for simplicity that regions of ß are spherical, as is true when the interfacial tension is isotropic and there are no elastic strains, W = 4r2a + (4/3)*r3Af The maximum value of W is W* = 16iro3/3Af2 [1] for regions with radius r* = -2o/Af. [2] For single component condensed systems it has been shown14 that the steady rate of nucleation of 0 per unit volume of untransformed a is nearly proportional to exp[- (W* + Q)/kT] where Q is the activation energy for the unit processes of adding or removing one atom from an embryo or nucleus. If To is the temperature at which a and ß are in equilibrium, the rate of nucleation is a maximum at a temperature 0 < T < To where (W* + Q)/kT is a minimum. P regions smaller than critical size are called embryos; they tend to grow smaller and disappear, only exceptionally growing larger. Regions equal to or larger than critical size are called nuclei. A critical size nucleus may grow indefinitely large or may shrink back to a, either process decreasing the free energy of the region.

This paper develops the procedure for simulating the special locked-cycle Work Index laboratory test using the kinetic parameters obtained by conducting standard size-mass balance (SMB) grinding tests and presents the results for three materials - quartz, a taconite iron ore and a bituminous coal. It was found that the WI could be determined by simulation; however, if a material breaks abnormally, a full description of its abnormal breakage is necessary. It was also found that the sensitivity of the WI test procedure to the sieving process and the estimating of the 80% passing size of the sieve undersize is sufficient to question the practice of quoting a WI to two or more decimal places. Finally, if a material grinds abnormally in the Work Index mill, then the WI test should not be conducted.

"Convergence of roof and floor in underground mine openings is a common occurrence. This convergence not only adversely affects the ability of workers, equipment and supplies to travel through the mine, it also reduces the effectiveness of the mine ventilation system, which is essential for the dilution of methane gas and airborne respirable dust. While installing secondary standing supports to control floor and roof convergence, such supports, by nature, partially obstruct a portion of the airway. These added obstructions inhibit the ability of the ventilation system to operate as efficiently as it could by increasing the resistance in and reducing the cross-sectional area of the airway.This study introduces and demonstrates the benefits of The Eye CAN™ standing roof support, which controls floor and roof convergence and is less obstructive to air flow than conventional wooden cribs. Laboratory findings show that the normal resistance of a supported lined airway is reduced by using this new product from Burrell Mining Products, Inc., while providing the same roof support characteristics of an established product-The CAN®. Load vs. displacement curves generated from laboratory tests demonstrated that this new product behaves with the same roof support characteristics as others in The CAN product family. Ventilation data gathered from a simulated mine entry was then used for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. The CFD analysis showed an improvement with The Eye CAN versus other accepted forms of standing roof support.This proof-of-concept study suggests that, when using this new product made by Burrell Mining Products, Inc., not only will the convergence from the roof and floor be controlled, but airway resistance will also be reduced.INTRODUCTIONOne of the basic elements of underground mining is the necessity to support the mine roof. It is well-known that easier reserves have been mined so that today's underground mines present challenging conditions. Factors influencing roof support decisions include mine depth, mining method, overburden composition, and agency regulations. Mining engineers, therefore, have to balance three objectives: safety, engineering, and cost. While safety is obviously paramount, and engineering often complements safety, the cost effectiveness of any product, method, or device warrants additional consideration in today's harsh business climate. Avenues for adaptation and improvement are found at the intersection of the three objectives."

Ausmelt top entry submerged lance technology offers a cost-effective means of carrying out a range of base metal smelting operations with minimum impact on the environment. The system is capable of using a range of fuels depending upon local costs. Due to the intense, localised reaction zone, high energy efficiency is obtained and the physical size of the plant is relatively small compared to that of most competing technologies. Capital cost can thereby be minimised. The furnace is well enclosed, such that fugitive emissions and ingress of diluting air to the gas stream are both minimised. The oxygen potential in the slag can be varied over a wide range such that the system can be applied in both oxidising and reducing duties. Following a general description of the technology, the paper discusses Ausmelt plants already in operation. The application of the technology for the provision of additional smelting capacity, for the improvement of converting operations and for slag cleaning is then described. A brief explanation of how these processes could be applied at southern African smelters is given and the paper closes with an assessment of novel Ausmelt applications for this geographical region, such as zinc recovery from sulphides.

This paper describing the mining practice of the Hecla and Star mines, both located at Burke, Idaho, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. It is partly a revision of articles by the author appearing in volume 72 of the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, published in 1925, and in the June 1928, issue of the American Mining Congress Journal. About 26,000 tons per month of lead ore is produced at the Hecla mine. Costs at the mine are given for the year 1928. Stoping operations in the Star mine have covered such a short period, during which time the abnormal expenses of starting were incurred, that they are not given in this paper.

Most metallurgists are well acquainted with the contributions already made to the study of metals by the use of X-rays. On the one hand, the radiographic method is constantly becoming of increasing importance as a nondestructive testing procedure, while on the other hand the techniques of X-ray diffraction have made important contributions to the fundamental knowledge in studies of phase diagrams, stress conditions, and so forth. A new, and as yet insufficiently appreciated, tool exists in the application of microradiography to alloy structures. This new procedure in many respects bears the same relation to microscopic investigations as does macroradiography to the gross inspection of metal surfaces. However, where macroradiography is used ordinarily to determine the soundness of the metal structure, this new method can be used not only to investigate micro-un-soundness but also to examine the distribution of the constituent elements within the body of the alloy. When combined with the normal procedures of microscopy, this offers a technique of great potential power. It is intended in this paper to present a few examples of copper-base alloys demonstrating the additional knowledge obtained from the microradiographic method. The detection of micro-unsoundness is demonstrated in Fig. I for a sample of cartridge brass as cast. The sample ap- peared quite sound when viewed under the microscope, but in reality was thickly populated with minute voids. This application of the method conforms in every way to conventional large-scale radiography and has been used to facilitate production of metal for vacuum devices.&apos; The true potentialities of the technique are revealed by comparison of Figs, 2a and 2b, which are respectively a photomicrograph and a microradiograph of a cast alloy of 80 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Sn, 10 per cent Pb. The remarkable difference in appearance provides some concept of the additional information this method may yield when used as an auxiliary to microscopic studies. Fig. 2a shows two phases of the copper-tin system plus segregated_ lumps of lead. Fig. 2b, on the other hand, shows with exceptional clarity the actual dendritic growth of the metal crystals during solidification. The practice of microradiography depends upon the laws of absorption of X-rays. This subject has been reviewed thoroughly in recent papers,l,2,3 but for clarity a brief resume will be given here. As is well known, when a beam of X-rays is transmitted through a, layer of homogeneous material, the intensity is reduced according to the relation: where Il is the transmitted intensity, I0 is the incident intensity, µ1 is the linear absorption coefficient of the material, t1 is the thickness of the material.

"Cellular damage induced by silica dust is known to be associated with increased fragility and destabilization or destruction of the cell membranes. The mechanism by which silica dust effects biological membranes is still unknown. Using the ESR spin-trap methodology, we find that hydroxyl radicals are generated in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground silica. The amount of the radicals generated depends on the extent of grinding and ""freshness"" of the dust. Using linoleic acid as a model lipid, we show that the silica dust causes lipid peroxidation via ·OH, 02-, or linoleic acid related radicals as intermediates. Catalase and superoxide dismutase inhibit the formation of these radicals. The results suggest that free radicals associated with freshly ground silica and the related lipid peroxidation of the memberanes may be the starting point of the silicotic processes.INTRODUCTIONDespite considerable-effort over the years, the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrosis are still not fully understood (1,2). It is generally thought, nevertheless, that the interaction of the quartz particles with the cell membranes is the starting point of the silicotic process (3). We felt that the mechanism of the membrane damage by quartz might involve oxygenated free radicals because (a) a suspension of quartz particles in contact with alveolar macrophages has been reported.(4,5) to initiate an enhancement of lipid peroxidation, defined broadly as the ;oxidative deterioration of polyunsaturated components of lipids, and (b) hydroxyl (·OH) radicals are known to be capable of peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids (6) and initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membranes (7). Moreover it is known that exposure of cell membranes, fatty acids and unsaturated food oils to ionizing radiation, which generates ·OH. radicals, causes rapid peroxidation (6). Earlier studies o~ the aqueous chemistry of quartz suspensions have reported detection of HzOz (8), implicating the formation of ·OH radicals as transient species, but, we are not aware of any report of the detection of ·OH radicals in quartz suspensions and this provided the motivation for the present undertaking. Since it is known that, because of their high reactivity (hence short life time) in aqueous media, the ·OH radicals cannot be detected via electron spin resonance (ESR) directly (9,10), we have used ESR combined with the spin-trap methodology (9) for studying the •OH formation."

The sulphur shortage that has occurred in the past two years has directed attention more and more toward sour natural gas reserves, Wellhead values of sour gas vary widely depending upon the acid gas composition, location, market conditions, and necessary processing charges. Preparation of a saleable residue gas is considerably more involved and expensive than that normally encountered in treating a sweet gas. Recent revisions in sales gas specifications have increased capital costs and processing charges. The presence of hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide in a natural gas contributes to shrinkage factors that may approach 50%. Fuel required by the gas sweetening process and sulphur slant tail gas incineration also contributes to a further reduction in the volume of residue gas available for sale. The additional processing facilities involving gas sweetening, mercaptan removal, expanded utilities, sulphur recovery and sulphur handling, all demand additional operating and maintenance staff. The economics of geologic exploration have changed materially in the past decade primarily due to the change in three basic factors, namely, increased wages and salaries, increased cost of materials, and a greater complexity in methods of exploration. Following the general economic pattern over the past ten years, exploration costs, have, in general, increased, although there is one heartening exception. A comparative picture is complicated because of advances in techniques which ensue from the introduction of new methods and devices largely for aerial exploratory work, Some of these methods were either in their infancy or unknown before World War II. Geological exploration may well be considered as a form of applied research. True, it has peculiarities from this standpoint some advantageous, others disadvantageous, Some of the advantages lie in the fact that exploration success does not involve the production of a new product which necessitates advertising expense and marketing problems. In normal times there is a well established market for the fruits of a successful mineral find. The outstanding disadvantage of exploration lies in the enigma of deciding when to quit if the sought fop prize is elusive. In the search for buried treasure, man?s curiosity is apt to color his judgment. Even the so-called detached scientist may fall &apos;all too readily into the wishful thinking of the old- time prospector who is lured on by the thought that the next pull from the drill hole, or the next round from the face will reveal a bonanza. It involves mature judgment and experience to ascertain the stage in exploration when further work is not justified.
