"In recent years efficient safety organizations have been considered essential at all well-managed metal mines. Statistics from numerous mines throughout the country show that the expense of operation of these safety departments is repaid many times by the saving due to fewer accidents. Men trained in first aid, mine rescue and fire-fighting are important parts of the safety organization at most mines. It is more desirable, however, to lay stress ma accident prevention and fire precautions rather than on first aid and fire fighting. Both of these phases of safety work have been well developed in the Globe Miami district. The co-operative mine rescue organization* in this district under Orr Woodburn, is one of the best in the country. Mine rescue teams are kept trained at all the mines and the oxygen breathing apparatus is constantly maintained in good condition. Miners are also trained in first aid, and are offered incentives to make themselves proficient both in mine rescue and first-aid work.The Old Dominion Company is among the leaders in the safety movement in the Globe-Miami district. The safety department at this mine was established January 1, 1914, and has been developed to a high degree of efficiency. W. G. McBride, general manager of the company, takes an active part in the safety work and has given Albert Talon the safety inspector, his active support in developing the organization. The success of the department is dos largely to the ability, tact, and personality of the men directing the work.The following description of the establishment and operation of the safety organization at this mine was prepared from information supplied by Mr. Tallon."

"Due to the way drilled deep foundations are being constructed, their structural integrity and geotechnical capacity are highly variable. Drop weight systems are increasingly being used to dynamically test the capacity and integrity of drilled deep foundations. Conventional pile driving hammers are often either inadequate or not economical to test these foundations and drop weight systems have therefore been developed to allow for dynamic testing.The advantages of the tests include high mobility, short testing time, low cost relative to static load tests (allowing multiple tests at a single site), and integrity/construction quality evaluation concurrent with capacity determination. The dynamic testing method for drilled deep foundations encounter several difficulties including: the need for a pre-testing analysis for matching pile, soil and testing system, adequate mass and drop height to reflect the mobilized capacity without structural damage, test interpretations for irregularly shaped and/or non-uniform piles, need for reliable dynamic measurements depending on the impact and the distance between the impact and the measuring point, and limited knowledge about the accuracy of the predictions.The principles of the tests are presented using simplified models and demonstrated via a case history. Drop weight systems are reviewed. Dynamic measurement principles are explained and the construction and testing quality effects are outlined and demonstrated via numerical modeling and case histories. A comparison of dynamic and static tests is presented via a database, case histories and finally a short review of relevant codes is provided.1 IntroductionTraditional static axial load test is performed by a slow application of a force produced against independent reaction, imitating structural loading. It is the most reliable method to determine the pile’s performance as commonly required under typical service conditions. The major limitations of this testing are: (i) high cost associated with set-up, test duration, interpretation and construction delays, and (ii) inability to obtain information about the pile-soil interaction along the pile without additional testing means (e.g. tell tales, strain gauges, etc.). These limitations are acute when high capacity foundations are involved."

T HE Mining Methods Committee held its initial meeting* on Tuesday afternoon, with F. W. Bradley in the chair and W. Y. Westervelt as vice- chairman. The first paper to be presented was "A Plea for a U. S. Court of Patent Appeals," for which Kenneth W. Greenawalt ably pleaded. The paper (which was published in full in last month's issue) is so carefully prepared that no synopsis can do it justice. It discusses the opposed views of some patent lawyers and other lawyers and members of the judiciary as, for example, Chief Justice Taft who is quoted as saying in 1921: "I think it is a great deal better to take a first class lawyer and a first-class judge and make him a good patent expert than it is to take a patent expert and try to make him a first-class lawyer and a good judge." Mr. Greenawalt argued the need for specialized scientific and engineering interest and understanding to enable a lawyer or judge to prepare or interpret patent specifications and decide the originality necessary for a valid invention. He proposed the special U. S. Court of Patent Appeals to also counteract the costly confusion and injustice now ruling where a patent may be declared valid in the courts of certain States and invalid by the courts of other States.

The occurrence of minerals of nickel and cobalt at Mine La Motte is probably known to every mineralogist. I will not attempt to describe these minerals, but, before entering on my subject, will briefly mention the ores, etc., which call for metallurgical treatment and enter into the composition of our mattes. Our staple lead-ore, the dressed galena, is the chief source of nickel and cobalt. It carries but a small percentage of these metals, viz.: 0.2 to 0.3 percent. usually, though when much copper pyrites is contained in the gangue, the amount of nickel and cobalt may be as great as 1.0 to 1.5 per cent. Next in importance is the ((middle product" of the dressingworks, consisting of the sulphides of iron (and copper) with gangue and galena. This usually carries 20 to 23 per cent. of lead, 0.5 to 1.0 per cent. of copper and 2.5 to 3.5 per cent. of nickel and cobalt. A larger percentage of copper always carries with it an increase of nickel and cobalt. In some few cases 12 to 15 per cent. of copper gives 6.5 to 8.0 per cent of these metals. The history of mining education, like the history of the mining industry, is typified by “boom and bust” cycles. In academia, the perpetual problem can be stated as “too many graduates for the jobs or too many jobs for the graduates.” The deep “bust cycle” that spanned the 1990s through 2003 spawned renewed efforts to eliminate, consolidate, restructure, rename, reinvent or otherwise change mining education to make it (for some) more fiscally or socially acceptable. During this period, a number of mining programs were eliminated, and by the late 1990s senior people in academia and their counter-parts in industry became increasing concerned about the very real possibility that strategic disciplines may disappear altogether. As a result, the Mining and Metallurgy Society of America (MMSA) created an educational committee to explore how industry could help preserve key programs necessary to provide future professionals. Several meetings were held to assess the problems and look for solutions. In 2004, this effort culminated in the first of the “Engineering Education” sessions to be held at the SME Annual Meetings. In response to the information presented in this first meeting, Marc LeVier (then president of MMSA) invited a number of the participants to reconvene the following day. An action plan was formulated and a task force was organized. To more fully represent all industry sectors, SME later that year assumed the sponsorship role for the task force.

The January-February number of the Journal of the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa, 1943, is made up entirely of a discussion of Ball Wear in Cylindrical Mills. Following the principal paper by T. K. Prentice are several remarkably pertinent and carefully prepared discussions. Few persons in this country would be likely to see this publication, and since the information presented is new and of current interest, it seems desirable to abstract and review this publication for the benefit of the members of the A.I.M.E. The purpose of the investigation is stated in the first two paragraphs of Prentice's paper, as follows: Early in 1941, The Chamber of Mines Steel Products, Limited, initiated a series of tests under semi-working scale conditions to determine, if possible, those physical and chemical properties of a ball which make it resistant to wear when used in a cylindrical mill as a grinding medium, with the primary object of incorporating those beneficial qualities in the balls being produced at their works. This paper describes the tests carried out and discusses the results obtained. From these results it was possible to formulate a new theory relating to ball wear in cylindrical mills. This theory is presented in the second portion of this paper. Practical Ball-mill Tests in a Cylindrical Mill Part I of the paper begins with a discussion of the methods used for the manu- facture of grinding balls in South Africa. The following paragraph is of particular interest. The cast steel ingots, 4¼ in. square by 3 ft. 6 in. long, are re-heated in a gas-fired sloping stationary-hearth furnace and then rolled in a six-pass continuous mill into 25/8 in. round billets. Some of these billets are then removed and cut into suitable lengths for forging into 4 in., 3¼ in. , 3 in. or 2½ in. balls by means of three Drop and two Beche hammers, but the greater number, whilst still at about 1,000, pass directly into a set of scroll rolls which produce, in an ingenious manner, finished 3 in. balls direct from the 25/8 in. billets. Except in special cases, all balls are allowed to cool in the atmosphere and are not water quenched. Details of the Tests In order to enable the reader to evaluate properly the results and conclusions in the rest of the paper and in the discussions following the paper, most of the information presented by the author under this heading is quoted: The testing unit was a nominal 30 in. diameter and 18 in. long centre discharge Denver Ball Mill. The ore pulp to the ball mill comprised a small portion of the normal feed to one of the fourteen City Deep 5 ft. 6 in. X 22 ft. tube mills, and the grinding media consisted of the balls under test plus other balls to give the desired load. Modern steelmaking is based on direct use of oxygen in high intensity batch reactors. A totally new approach is proposed in this paper, based on the view that pursuit of high intensity is unlikely to lead to successful coal-based continuous steelmaking. By substituting carbon dioxide and water vapor as the oxidants rather than using oxygen directly, the intensity is greatly reduced. Accordingly. subsurface formation of carbon monoxide bubbles can be avoided by careful manipulation of the three participating rate processes, gaseous diffusion, interfacial chemical kinetics and liquid phase mass transfer. Steelmaking can then be carried out without explosive ejection of molten droplets and the generation of micro-spray but rather in a controlled and fumeless fashion. The vital component is the introduction of generic melt circulation technology. Three melt circulation loops in series are envisaged. Starting with a composite feed of iron ore fines, pulverized coal and lime flux, a metallized solid raft floating on molten iron is propelled out of the ironmaking loop onto the first of two downstream steelmaking loops. In the first, a liquid slag is formed, primary decarburization is undertaken not with oxygen but rather with CO2 and H2O and the melt is desulfurized. The semi-product stream enters the third melt circulation loop, where open-channel decarburization is effected along with dephosphorization to yield a low carbon steel product. Alternatively, the melt leaves the last loop to irrigate a packed tower countercurrent to argon at around 100 mbar to continuously produce ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel.

THE tendency all over Europe, just as it is with us, is to go to the use of turbines for new construction or replacement of old steam or even gas engines. 'The lower construction cost and the lower operating cost, when they can have high steam temperatures and pressures, together with their efficiency, is the cause of this change to turbines, both high and low pressure. The present trend is to equip plants with modern, efficient steam boilers, turbines, etc., and gradually work into high-pressure superheated steam equipment to accomplish a saving. One company has just completed a 375 to 400 lb., 700 deg. superheated steam installation and turbo-blowers with this end in view. Some of our new steam plants are using 350 lb. working pressure.

"Low back pains account for about 13 per cent of all compensation claims made to the Quebec Workmen's Compensation Commission and cost the employers a sum exceeding ten million dollars. The frequency and cost of these health problems in Quebec metal mines are proportional to the provincial trends. An elaborate review of the literature on the causes, nature and prevention of low back pain is made in this presentation. A prevention program for low back pain has been designed in cooperation with a team of seven medical specialists and two physiotherapists for the Quebec metal mines. The program is especially designed for persons who have had low back pain, in order to prevent a recurrence, and for persons beginning to feel chronic difficulties. It is based on existing programs at the Hawthorne Plant of Western Electric Company and at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, but it requires a much different approach because of the nature of medical care available at the mining sites. The program is difficult because it involves a change of attitude for every employee and every supervisor. The program, so far, is beneficial because several men are now seriously engaged in an active program of reconditioning and because the problem of low back pain ie beginning to be seen from a new angle."

Mining Details 6. Filling 7. Pillar Extraction 8. Costs HISTORY Noranda is a relatively young enterprise, with much of the personal character of its founders woven into it. The name Noranda is an abbreviation of Northern Canada and the name has been a happy one for an enterprise based on northern resources, tenacity and courage. The discovery credit goes to Ed. H. Horne. This intrepid prospector returned again and again to his sulphide discoveries on the shores of Osisko lake and, in 1922, after ten years of prospecting, succeeded in interesting S. C. Thomson and H. W. Chadbourne in his discoveries. The early exploration by L. K. Fletcher, from 1922 to 1925, for Thomson and Chadbourne, indicated promising, but somewhat perplexing, ore conditions. Mr. E. Hibbert and Mr. H. L. Roscoe rook on the task of preparing the mine for production and building a smelter in 1926, and this difficult task in this isolated area made steady progress and the smelter was blown-in in December, 1927.

Seabed polymetallic nodules, which contain significant quantities of metals key to electrification (nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese) can be processed using several different metallurgical processing options, including direct smelting and subsequent hydrometallurgical refining of the copper/nickel matte, ammoniacal leaching (gas reduction or Cuprion), and acid leaching (often reductive). Many of these approaches suffer from reduced cobalt extraction, difficult physical performance, or overall circuit complexity in general, leading to increased risk to the overall project. SGS has considered pressure acid leaching of nodules for further investigation, as publicly shared data on this processing route stems from the 1970s and 1980s and is not always easily accessible. This paper will detail the series of tests conducted and provide updated results obtained (high Ni/Co/Cu recovery with limited Mn/Fe), as well as comment on the potential treatment options on the product solution and residue.

Le minerai est constitué habituellement de 20% de fine pyrite disséminée. L’or est en fines particules associées directement à ces grains de pyrite de texture cataclastique.Deux modelés ont été for mules jusqu' a présent pour expliquer la genèse du gisement: une thèse syngenetique (Barnett et a/.1982) et une thèse épigénétique (Wyman et al. 1986). "The ancestral Ringarooma River in northeast Tasmania has transported alluvial tin and other heavy minerals from their onshore source of stanniferous Devonian granites downstream into what is now Ringarooma Bay. Previous exploration work has demonstrated the presence of potentially economic tin mineralisation within the palaeochannels and terraces associated with the submerged river.The offshore tin resource lies directly on the seabed or with less than 2 m of overburden, and within 5 - 50 m water depths in the wider bay area. The main river channel continues offshore for at least 13 km, with high tin grades found within the palaeochannel but also dispersed across the sea floor as a sheet wash, a result of Quaternary sea level change reworking the placer deposits. This drowned portion of the coastal plain contains a continuation of rich tin leads as low gradient anastomosing channels, and has been delineated by marine seismic and drilling activity since the 1960s. Tin grades in the Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial profiles vary from 50 - 300 g/m3, with the highest concentrations in the coarser basal horizons. A previous offshore explorer estimated a resource of 194 Mm3 at 150 - 250 g/m3.Kenex Ltd created 3D models of the paleochannels and the mineralisation with the aim of better constraining the resource estimate and identifying additional depositional areas. The modelling was undertaken with the input of geophysical data, bathymetry and geochemical sampling of the seabed surface and from historic offshore drill holes. A prospectivity model covering Ringarooma Bay was produced to target tin-bearing gravels. Predictive maps were created to represent various features of the offshore mineral system, including assessing gradient changes in palaeochannels and their sinuosity. The model identifies areas with higher potential for alluvial tin mineralisation and will be used to focus the exploration programme over tenements currently held by Kenex Ltd."

"A set of state-of-the-art methods have been applied to study ultrafine particles and nanoscale species arising on mineral surfaces upon milling, interaction with flotation reagents, and leaching of base metal sulfide ores in order to gain insights into interfacial mechanisms. The fine fractions produced by ball milling of a Pb-Zn Gorevsky ore and four Cu-Ni sulfide ores studied with laser diffraction, dynamic light scattering, zeta-potential measurement, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), SEM, TEM and other techniques. The particle size distributions had, aside from the peaks at 20-60 ?m, maxima near 1-2 ?m; the flotation was considerably suppressed when the yield of positively charged ultrafine particles approached tenths % (several kg per ton). High-energy XPS and X-ray absorption spectra revealed that sulfide minerals depleted in metal in air and aqueous solutions were composed of outer “polysulfide” layers, strata with disulfide species, and heavily defective underlayers, and “passivation” was explained by stability of the metal-deficit structures. Dixanthogen at pyrite and copper-activated sphalerite, dixanthogen and then cuprous xanthate on chalcopyrite, and chemisorbed xanthate at galena were specified as the main interfacial products using cryo-XPS of fast-frozen flotation slurries. The particle size, zeta-potential and behavior of colloids of Cu and Pb xanthates and dixanthogens were largely determined by the initial ratio of a cation and collector; the properties of copper xanthate nanoparticles were also affected by incorporated dixanthogen (about 15 wt.%). Submicrometer gas domains of 3-8 nm in height and “hydrophobic” forces upon the probe retraction were found on xanthate-treated minerals using atomic force microscopy and spectroscopy; their impact on flotation is briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONInterfacial phenomena play a key role in flotation, leaching, water purification and related environmental processes. The mineral processing and extraction of metal from sulfide ores commonly involves milling the ore, which produces, along with the particles of 20 µm to 100 µm, mineral entities ranging from micrometer to submicrometer and nanometer scale. Furthermore, ultrafine particles of flotation reagents, products of metal sulfide oxidation, and so on may form spontaneously and accumulate in production water, flotation froth, deposit on mineral surfaces, affecting the flotation performance, and then enter waste waters, mine and natural drainage, polluting soils, surface- and ground waters (Miettinen et al., 2010; Wang et al., 2014). The efficiency of flotation and hydrometallurgical recovery of values, environmental issues are crucially dependent on the state of mineral surfaces. Particularly, it is generally accepted that the surface non-stoichiometry of sulfide minerals induced by oxidation and leaching should affect their hydrophobicity and reactivity, including so-called “passivation”, but the nature of such surface layers are still a matter of controversy (see, for example, Holmes and Crundwell, 2013). Another phenomenon attracting rapidly growing interest in several areas is low-dimensional gas species (“nanobubbles”) at hydrophobic surfaces that may play a decisive role in particle-bubble attachment in flotation but remains scarcely investigated up to now (Xing et al., 2017). Here, we survey our recent results on the abovementioned problems applying a series of rather new methods and approaches; more details can be found in refs. Karacharov et al., 2016; Mikhlin et al., 2015; 2016; 2016a; 2016b; 2016c; 2016d; 2017; 2017a; Vorobyev et al., 2017."

The key to the successful debt funding of a new mining project, whether in economically established or developing nations, is the submission of a comprehensive feasibility study. The feasibility study forms the basis from which the resource banker can construct financial models which govern the amount of available funds, the conditions which control the supply of such funds and the time period over which the loan may be repaid. The bank will wish to ensure that the feasibility study is the best representation and confirmation of reality possible because this model is the basis of the loan security package. Thus the study will be vigorously interrogated by independent experts in all its elements including the ore reserve, mineability, metallurgy, operating and capital cost profile, environmental factors and management. A well constructed feasibility study, undertaken by well recognised and respected independent consultants can save the client company a great deal of real and opportunity costs especially in relation to project timing. Once constructed and operating, the mining project may face one or more completion tests in relation to the loans provided. The genetics of such tests often relate to either the ability of the operating company to become solely responsible for the repayment of the loan or to be rewarded by lower interest rates or some other mechanism. Strong professionalism, accessible records, good checking procedures and high quality, competent site management will greatly assist the client company passing these tests. A record of well established technical competence with its bankers may well assist a company in the establishment of a mezzanine loan for the early development of its next project, thus allowing an earlier return of dividends to shareholders.

The Minah silver-lead mine in the Wickes district, Jefferson County, Mont., produced substantial quantities of silver-lead ores in the 1890's. The mine has been abandoned since the "silver panic" of the early 1900's. As a part of the Bureau of Mines: program to develop new sources of lead to overcome the growing shortages of that metal, a development project was started at the Minh mine in April 1946 and continued until June 1947, during which 5,600 feet of angledozer trenching and. 1,093 feet of core drilling were completed on the main vein and nearby parallel veins: As a result of this work, interest in the property was stimulated and private operators are now engaged in reopening the mine. This report discusses the past history, geologic setting, and the recent and early operations of the mine.
