This paper, describing the operation of the Gifford Hill & Co. plant at Hoot Spur near Texarkana, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining and preparing gravel and sand throughout the United States. These tapers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total costs might not be advisable in some instances yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The plant described combines some features of dredging and some of dry-pit operation, as material is excavated in a dry pit with a drag line, hauled to the plant in standard-gage cars, and then pumped. This operation should be of special interest to operators whose deposits contain a large quantity of clay.

Production sharing and cost apportionment in joint ventures is commonplace in Australasia today and elsewhere. It is a recognised convention that, with the exception of a free carry situation, joint venture participants usually share the proceeds of the joint venture in direct proportion to their respective participating interest, after having first paid its respective cash calls, in advance, to cover the projectÆs ongoing operating and capital cost requirements.In surface mines, the parties simply pay their way and take their proceeds in this manner. In underground mines, the situation is no different, though treatment of capital, depreciation and tax may differ between the parties. A common feature in many cases is the creation of a joint venture entity to conduct the business. This entity then collects cash from the parties, banks it, employs the staff, runs the operation, provides reports and pays out the proceeds. This convention appears to be relatively simple in application. In practice, it has been known to be complicated in the situation where the participants take their product at the mine gate and undertake their own marketing and selling arrangements. A more complex situation presents itself where the joint venture tenement boundary with an unrelated third party straddles an economic deposit. In this scenario, both the joint venture parties and the third party may wish to mine the deposit, sharing some infrastructure and costs, yet taking their own product as it is produced. A case study outlining such a situation is presented in the paper, outlining firstly how the major cost categories were identified and treated for cost apportionment purposes. Secondly, a mechanism for the equitable apportionment of product is suggested. Finally, issues such as timing and cost reporting are dealt with, together with a checklist of points which should be considered when a similar situation might arise in the future.

THE most concentrated industry of major character in the United States is that of the Ford Motor CO., which is to say Henry Ford. Its sole function is to supply the public with a cheap motor car which it does to the extent of two million or so per annum. In doing this, a relatively small profit per unit is multi- plied to an enormous aggregate per annum and has resulted in the creation of one of the greatest industrial fortunes of the world. The industrial and sociological consequences of .this are bound to be immense. On the physical side the production of two million automobiles means the consumption of two or three million tons of materials, chiefly metals, in the 'direct form of the finished product', and a huge additional tonnage of coal and other things that ,are consumed en route, and also the labor of many thousands of men. In the development of a business on this scale it was but natural that the Ford Motor ,Co. should seek to supply itself with the raw 'materials it needs, and they being so largely coal and metals the company is brought into close contact with the mining and metallurgical industries. It is a huge consumer of - steel. It is the fourth largest consumer of copper. It is a large consumer of lead, tin, aluminum and zinc. The mining and metallurgical industries have, therefore, good reason to learn to know Henry Ford, his personality, his thoughts and his policies.

Good morning. I am very pleased to be invited to present the Opening Address to this inaugural New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. It is indeed a pleasure to see so many representatives of this industry, which is so important to New Zealand's economy, present here today.   I extend a warm welcome to all delegates, particularly those from outside New Zealand. To those of you who have travelled from offshore, please closely observe our industry, and do not hesitate to ask Crown Minerals staff here for any further information you may want. I trust you will soon come to the same conclusion that my two following speakers have; that New Zealand is a good investment destination, and further that many of you will decide to invest in New Zealand's minerals and mining industry.   In New Zealand the minerals industry - minerals, coal and petroleum - together constitute an approximate $2.5 billion per year business. In broad terms this is about 3% of our Gross Domestic Product.

This paper concerns measurements of low-velocity air currents and investigations on mine ventilation by means of chemical smoke. The chemical smoke used is produced without flame and at ordinary mine temperatures, and therefore presents no ignition hazard in gaseous mines. Mining men who have worked in open-light mines are familiar with the use of tobacco smoke in determining the direction of air travel and approximately measuring low-velocity air currents. The use of chemical smoke is merely a refinement on the use of tobacco smoke and the flameless low-temperature source of chemical smoke has the additional advantage that it can be used in gaseous mines. Ventilation smoke apparatus, Fig I, is a simple device for producing dense white smoke. The apparatus as shown consists of a rubber aspirator bulb which is used to force air through a glass "smoke tube" containing a chemical substance that produces a dense white smoke on contact with air. The apparatus was developed by engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.' It is inexpensive, weighs less than 3 oz, is easily carried in a pocket, and requires no skill to operate. Smoke apparatus is invaluable in practical mine ventilation work for: (I) measuring low-velocity air currents, (2) detecting air leakage, (3) observing airflow characteristics. This paper is written to show the merits of the apparatus, and is based upon findings through its extensive use, during the past six years, in mines operated by the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. The Apparatus Certain chemicals, such as stannic chloride (SnCl4) and pyrosulphuric acid (H2S2O7) produce "white smoke" when exposed to air. Stannic chloride gives off vapors which on contact with moist air cause the formation of solid hydrates, of which SnCl4.5H20 is the most important. Pyrosulphuric acid decomposes when exposed to air with the evolution of sulphur trioxide (SO3) fumes, which become white upon contacting moisture in the air. A chemical, such as one of the above, is the active substance in a smoke tube. The glass tubes are hermetically sealed during manufacture, and are made ready for use by merely breaking off the tips at the conveniently located file cuts. When the smoke tube is connected to the aspirator, depressing the aspirator bulb forces air into contact with the chemical, and smoke discharges from the open end of the tube. A white solid (a hydrate if stannic chloride is used, or sulphur trioxide if pyrosulphuric acid is used) may occasionally form a cake in the outlet opening of a smoke tube. THE annual meeting of the Lake Superior Mining Institute was held on Sept. 7 and 8, Crystal Falls and Iron Mountain, Mich., being the principal centers of activity. Members of both institutes began assembling early, and by the evening of Sept. 6, some 60 had already arrived at Crystal Falls. The greater number arrived the following morning, however, and after the usual formalities of registration were attended to, the party were loaded into automobiles and set out on a tour of inspection of the mines near Iron River; some properties were passed through, and some were briefly visited to permit the inspection of any unusually interesting piece of equipment or detail of practice. The last stop of the morning was at the Caspian, Iron River, where the entire party was entertained at luncheon at the Caspian Club House. Both the food and the company were excellent, and as the weather was superlatively good (though the natives of the district modestly declared it was only ordinary autumn weather) the lunch was served on the lawn at the rear of the club, where the green turf, abundant flowers, and music by the band, added to the charm of good fellowship. The degree to which mining men have become addicted to golf was indicated by the large number of plus fours in evidence, whose wearers appeared just before lunch and disappeared immediately afterward.

This paper presents the results of a comprehensive pre-production pile testing programme for the US$ 800 million 1400MW Coal-Fired Jimah Power Plant Project in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The testing programme included high-strain dynamic testing and fully instrumented static axial and lateral load testing of driven prestressed concrete piles and bored cast-in-place piles. A highlight of the testing programme was the pioneering use of the Global Strain Extensometer (GloStrExt) Method, a deformation monitoring system that uses advanced pneumatically- or hydraulically-anchored extensometers and a novel analytical technique to monitor loads and displacements down the shaft and at the toe of driven prestressed concrete piles. The experience with the testing programme for the Jimah Project also demonstrates the possibility of achieving notable breakthroughs, not only in the monitoring, evaluation and reporting of pile foundation behaviour dynamics but also in our understanding of the mechanisms that underpin such behaviour. These significant gains are undeniably a direct result of the committed and co-operative relationship among the project owner, design/builder, specialist piling subcontractors, pile suppliers and pile instrumentation and testing specialists.

The first session of the Institute was held at the Smithsonian Institution, on Tuesday evening, February 22d. The members were welcomed to Washington and to the Smithsonian by Prof. Joseph Henry. President Holley responded to the cordial welcome of Professor Henry, and then read an introductory address on the subject of Technical Education. When water floods are initiated after gas-oil ratios have increased, the transition period from the start of injection until" the gas-oil ratios are returned to the solution gas-oil ratio may be important for either economic or technical reasons. The transition period is longest, and consequently most critical in water floods where injection is equal to withdrawals. This paper describes a theoretical basis for predicting the behavior of such a system and outlines a procedure for making the necessary calculations. The calculation procedure is illustrated for two actual cases: a line drive water flood and a five spot water flood. In each case there is a reasonable similarity between the actual and calculated performance.

The Alusaf aluminium smelter at Richards Bay by H. T. KAISER, B.Sc. (Pta), M.B.L. (Unisa) (Visitor) and P. DE WAAL, B.Sc., B.lng. (Mech.) (Stell.) (Visitor) A description is given of the aluminium smelter at Richards Bay, which operates on the Hall-Heroult electrolysis principle. The annual output of metal (average 99,7 per cent aluminium) is approximately 7S 000 tons. Since its commissioning in 1971, the plant has fulfilled South Africa's total demand for low-alloy rolling slabs, extrusion billets, remelt ingots, and electrical conductor rod. The plant layout allows for sufficient expansion of its capacity to meet longterm increases in demand.

At this time, over 300 tons of Au are used in electronic equipment each year with other precious and strategic metals such as Ag, Pt, Pd, Cu, Nb, Ta, etc. After the use-phase, the electronic devices become electronic waste (e-waste); consequently it is important to consider e-waste as a secondary supply for recovery of these metals. One of the most important components is the printed circuit boards (PCBs) because the amount of their precious metals is ten times higher than rich precious metals bearing ore. This paper presents the recovery of Au, Ag, Cu and Nb from PCBs of discarded computers using leaching column technique. The amount of these metals in used PCBs was: 613 g/ton of Au, 1515 g/ton of Ag, 36 g/ton of Nb and 23.4 % of Cu. The PCBs were crushed with a hammer mill until reaching a particle size between 3.33 mm to 0.43 mm. Then, it was leached with sodium cyanide solution in a glass column using the following conditions: sodium cyanide concentration 4 g/L, flux 20 L/kg PCBs day, pH between 10.5 to 11 and leaching time 15 days. Every day, after leaching, the pregnant solutions passed through a column with activated carbon to complete the closed loop system. The following recoveries were obtained: 46.6% of Au, 51.3% of Ag, 47.2% of Nb and 62.3 % of Cu. The products obtained are: a) loaded carbon that contains the desired metals and b) processed PCBs with precious metal contents. A preliminary technical-economic study shows the feasibility to create a small-scale PCBs recycling plant. The initial investment is on the order of US$ 155 639, considering the recovered metals from loaded carbon. The internal rate of return for 10 years period (IRR) and net present value (NPV) estimated are 27% and US$ 105 926 respectively. BEFORE discussing this subject it is necessary to define somewhat the meaning of the tern metallurgical.. When I was a student at M. I. T. ore-dressing was not thought of as metallurgy in any sense of the word, but it was considered as more closely allied to mining, enabling the miner to market an otherwise unmarketable product, or at least to market it to better advantage. Progress in ore-dressing has gradually allied it more closely with smelting, for at present the raw material received by the smelter is predominantly concentrates and smelting practice has been profoundly affected by the products of the concentrating mill. It is not surprising therefore that in many schools ore-dressing is frankly considered as metallurgy and although there may be some dissenting opinions it will be considered as such in this discussion. Twenty-five years ago at M. I. T. metallography was taught in a few optional lectures. This subject has developed rapidly and been expanded into the new and increasingly important field of physical metallurgy. To many metallurgists the -term metallurgy means only physical metallurgy. The application of an open-pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) to analyze mine planning and scheduling problems in large surface mines is discussed. The mine chosen for this application employed a large stripping dragline working in tandem with a shovel-truck haulback system for removing overburden. Large bottom-dump trucks were employed behind a coal loading shovel to transport the exposed coal out of the pit. Specifically, the current operations and the recommendations for short term and long term improvements were simulated on OPMHS. The effects of changing the operating parameters of the equipment on the total system were evaluated. Several alternatives were also studied for the best use of the existing equipment if the current operating parameters could not be improved upon. The results of the application are discussed.

The limestone reef reservoir at Swan Hills consists essentially of a "buildup" of successively smaller atoll-like layers. Precipitation of calcium carbonate within the lagoonal area of each layer essentially kept pace with growth of the outer organic lattice. Within the reef mass, six de-positional environments characterized by specific suites of fossils (or fossil fragments) and associated limestone textures are recognized as follows: ( 1) Aerated moderately agitated water of normal marine salinity (widespread shelf or submerged reef-built platform). Thamnopora-type corals, Amphipora, "pancake" stroma-toporoids, crinoids, articulate bra-chiopods, rare rugose cup corals, and ostracods occurs in light gray-buff skeletal microgranular limestone of low permeability. (2) Semi-stagnant quiet water of normal marine salinity (leeward side of reef). Crinoids, articulate brachio-pods, rare thamnopora-type corals, Amphipora, pancake and bulbous stromatoporoids, rugose cup corals, ostracods and gastropods occur in impermeable dark brown argillaceous skeletal calcilutite with thin black bituminous shale beds and rare dark chert nodules.

Determination of the adsorbed layer composition and structure at molecular and atomic levels and understanding adsorption mechanisms and dynamics are vitally important for the preparation of surface layers with specific functions. Direct information, at a molecular level, about mineral surface composition, its structure and surface distribution is crucial to perform an efficient separation process for mineral beneficiation. This information is equally important for modifying surface properties of industrial minerals for specific applications such as: fillers, composites, weathering resistance, etc. An understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of the interaction of first adsorbed organic molecules with mineral surfaces is a fundamental requirement for the prediction and control of the macroscopic surface properties governing the efficiency of separation technologies or new material formulations. The developed infrared external reflection technique has a unique ability to study interface phenomena, at a molecular level, on heterogeneous substrates. The variety, precision and reliability of information about the interface phenomena delivered by this technique is superior to any other single technique. The experiments are fast and non-destructive. High sensitivity (starting from 20 per cent of the monolayer) in situ collected information in a multiphase system, even in the region of strong absorption of the substrate, makes this technique a very valuable experimental tool. The complexity of the recorded reflection spectra, their sensitivity to variations of the optical properties of all bulk and surface components and their spatial distribution in the system under investigation, are in fact the major strengths of this technique. A few examples of the application of this multi-diagnostic technique, for monitoring surface modifications of semi-soluble minerals for selective flotation, will be discussed in detail in this paper.

With growing emphasis on energy conservation and increased concern over the presence of heavy metals in the environment, it is fortunate that most metals are readily recycled. In this respect, metals have a significant advantage over plastics and similar materials used as metal substitutes. For many years a secondary industry has processed scrap copper, nickel, lead and zinc to produce refined metal which has, to varying degrees, influenced the price and displaced the production of primary metal. This paper reviews some of the challenges the industry will face and the changes in process technology which will be required as pressure mounts to increase the amount of metal recycled. In the case of most base metals, this will have an impact on primary metal production; as the tonnage of metal recycled increases, the requirement for primary production, or new metal, will depend more and more on the growth in consumption.

Stripping of Fe (III) from D2EHPA Using Different Reagents The common way to extract Fe(III) from an organic solvent is by using concentrated acidic solutions. The stripping of Fe(III) from organic solvent Di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) by hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions has been found to increase with increasing the acid concentration. However, the use of a concentrated acidic solution such as 6 M HCl can degrade the organic molecules. In this research, to increase the efficiency of Fe(III) stripping from D2EHPA, effect of some acids, salts and buffer solutions was studied. Influence of Tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) as modifier on the Fe(III) stripping operation was also investigated. According to the results, the best Fe stripping recovery was achieved in the presence of low acid concentration and the salts which was 72.4 per cent oxalic acid, 70 per cent ammonium oxalate and 75 per cent buffer of oxalic acid and ammonium oxalate. The results also showed a better recovery in the presence of the buffer rather than the salt. Finally, increasing the concentration of TBP, HCl and H2SO4 resulted in a higher stripping efficiency of Fe(III). However, in the presence of oxalic acid and its salts increasing the reagent concentration did not increase the stripping efficiency and at this condition, the recovery of iron remained constant.
