"Underground construction poses certain challenges for all parties involved because the actual ground conditions are often unpredictable. Highly complex projects like tunnel construction are affected by various uncertainties. To address this complexity, the construction contract has to be flexible enough to be adapted to the actual conditions (e.g. divergent ground conditions, work delays). However, the adaptation of a tunnel construction contract does not guarantee the absence of a margin of interpretation. The perfect construction contract is an illusion because ex ante statements of the actual ground conditions are not feasible. This paper will discuss contractual parameters that must be considered in order to enable an effective adaptation of the contract during excavation. It is therefore necessary to discuss the following topics: decision-making competence, variable remuneration, fair-risk allocation, value engineering and partnering between client and contractor. INTRODUCTION Thinking of tunnel construction processes, engineers’ first (or at least second) association is about ground conditions. When constructing under the surface, the project is directly related to the ground conditions; however, ground conditions are known fairly well in advance. The estimated conditions can be the same or can also differ from the existing ones. A clear view of the conditions is possible only by driving through the section. What Hoek calls “Geological unpredictability which is guaranteed to provide some surprises in even the simplest tunnelling job” is, in addition to contractual issues, one of two critical aspects of modern tunneling (Hoek 1982). Almost no research tries to figure out, what flexibility in this context means and how to approach it in the contracts. Papers dealing with the New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM) pose some principles to meet the requests for flexibility (cf. Austrian Society for Geomechanics 2011). However, it remains unclear how to create contracts in order to make them “flexible” enough to react to divergent ground conditions."

An examination of the statistics of the world phosphate fertilizer industry since 1980 reveals an increasing tendency for fertilizer manufacturing activity to concentrate in phosphate rock mining areas. The economic justification for this resource-oriented strategy is clear. The choice between shipping phosphate rock, a comparatively low-value product, and shipping more valuable finished fertilizers will always be resolved in favor of the latter if cost considerations control the decision. The historical existence of substantial phosphate fertilizer manufacturing capacity oriented toward fertilizer-consuming activities and dependent on imported phosphate rock shows that narrow cost considerations have not always determined the industry's location. One is entitled to ask what conditions have changed to precipitate the observed relocations, and how permanent these changes are. These questions are the subject of this investigation.

PET/kaolin nanocomposites were prepared with melt blending and the structure of the composites was characterized through IR techniques. The results showed that there is stable chemical bonding between PET and kaolin. In addition, the dispersion condition of nanokaolin was observed by means of SEM and TEM. As a result, the thickness of the dispersed nanokaolin particles in PET matrix is mainly from 20mm to 200nm, and the nanosized particles congregate to some extent in the samples. In addition, it was found the kaolin particles almost homogeneously dispersed in the PET matrix, without preferential orientation because of the shear effect due to melt blending. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of PET/kaolin nanocomposites are dependent on the modification efficiency of nanokaolin. With the poor efficiency, the nanokaolin particles tend to aggregate at a high content and have a bad interfacial compability between nanokaolin and PET matrix, which lead to stress concentration, so the mechanical property descends. Experiments of different contents of modified nanokalin indicated that the intensity of PET/kaolin nanocomposites decreased firstly, then increased, and then decreased, with the nanokaolin content of 4 to 5 percent, the rupture stress of the composites showed a maximum value, which was higher than that of pure PET. On one hand, nanokaolin decreases the function among PET macromolecules, which will decline the mechanical properties, on the other hand, the piece structure of kaolinite improves the intensity of the nanocomposite. When the nanokaolin content is low, the former has the dominant effect on mechanical property, while the latter will play a leading role with the content increasing. But if the nanokaolin content still increases, the agglomeration and stress concentration will be obvious.

Recent research efforts have shown have shown selective solvation extraction of a gold cyanide ion-pair complex from alkaline cyanide solution is possible with organic phosphorus esters. These alkyl phosphorus esters such as tributyl phosphate (TBP) and di-n-butyl n-butyl phosphonate (DBBP) can selectively load gold to rather high levels, even in excess of 30 gpl. However, traditional stripping techniques are not particularly effective. In this regard, gold recovery by direct electrolysis of the organic phase has been found to be an interesting possibility. Further, the rate of direct electrodeposition from the organic phase can be improved significantly by using an aqueous/organic mixture. Direct electrodeposition of sheet gold from loaded DBBP was successfully accomplished at a current density of 8x10 4 amp/cm2 and 55°C from such a two-phase mixture with the aqueous phase as the continuous phase. No appreciable degradation the DBBP was found after 5 cycles of extraction and, electrodeposition. Finally, the applicability of the process strategy for an industrial situation was demonstrated by the successful treatment of waste gold cyanide electroplating solutions.

The temperature, strain rate, and orientation deDendence of defbrnzation of single-crystal MgAg has been examined. The crystals exhibit a tendency to single glide and little or no hardening at 25°C for many orientations. A much higher hardening rate is observed when multiple glide occurs, such as can be initiated by surface defects. The tendency for easy glide becomes less dependent on surface preparation and orientation as T — 100°C and bars so tested often fail after one-dimensional necking-. At T > 200°C (transition temperature for single-crystal notch sensitivity and poly crystalline ductility) single glide diminishes and two-dirnensionul necking begins. The crystals do not strictly obey a critical resolved shear stress law, but show the influence of {loo) cracks in determining the slip mode. The results are correlated with the difficulty of sciperdzslocation intersection and semibrittle behavior of this compound in single-crystal and poly crystalline form. Comparisons are made with the slip selection mode observed in tungsten, with the reported observations of easy glide in bee metals. and with the mechanical behavior of poly crystalline MgAg. PREVIOUS work on tensile deformation of polycrys-talline MgAgl and bending deformation of single-crystal MgAg2 has shown that the compound is semi-brittle (i.e., notch and grain boundary brittle). If this semibrittleness is supposed to result from the difficulty of multiple glide (associated with the problems of superdislocation intersection) one might expect single crystals deformed in tension to show pronounced single glide and strong orientation dependence of hardening rate. These experiments were done to examine this supposition and to study the tensile deformation of a highly ordered system which may be considered bcc if the difference between the two kinds of atoms is ignored (actual structure: CsC1). EXPERIMENTAL Single-crystal ingots were grown by directional freezing as previously described.' These ingots were sliced into a by a by 2 in, rectangular bars by electric discharge machining, then round tensile bars were conventionally machined to 1/8-in.-diam by 1-in.-long reduced section. The bars were typically tested without an anneal because of the problem of magnesium vapor loss and they were typically tested as mechanically polished. The analyses are within the same limits as those reported earlier; i.e., the average composition for each specimen is within 0.5 at. pct of stoichiometry, while the total range from end to end in a given specimen varies from 0.7 to 1.4 at, pct. There has been no indication in the results of any variation in slip or fracture mode attributable to the composition fluctuations. The slip systems were determined by two-surface analysis of the bars after testing to failure at room temperature. Single glide was so dominant that there was little difficulty in identification of the dominant slip system even though the tensile elongation to failure often approached 7 to 8 pct in room-tempera- ture tests. Elevated-temperature testing was done in a silicone oil bath and low-temperature testing was done in liquid Np or a dry-ice bath. All stress measurements are reported as engineering stress unless otherwise specified, and crosshead travel is used as the strain measurement. RESULTS The tendency toward single glide is best seen in the pictures, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, which depict deformation at fracture as a function of test temperature. While it is possible to find regions of secondary slip by careful microscopy, such regions are very small. The development of a ribbon-shaped configuration from an initially round section bar pulled at 100°C is typical, occurred by single glide, and illustrates the degree to which such glide continues. At temperatures =100°C the bars typically show elongation of 20 to 50 pct by predominently single glide. Despite the large elongation, fracture even at 150°C occurs in a brittle mode, Fig. 2, in the sense that it is an abrupt failure which shows no discernible necking in the second dimension of the bar's cross section (i.e., there is no appreciable action of any slip modes which would decrease the broad dimension of the cross section). Near 200°C the fracture mode changes slightly. Although most of the sample extension is by single glide, after the bar develops the characteristic ribbon shape it begins to neck in the second (i.e., broad) cross-sectional dimension. Minera Sabinas (Grupo Peñoles), localizada en Sombrerete, Zacatecas, México, produce concentrados de cobre y zinc. Su proceso es un circuito de conminución de quebradoras y dos molinos de bolas en circuito cerrado con hidrociclones seguido de un circuito de flotación, a partir de mineral polimetálico extraído de una mina subterránea. Su problemática consiste en que la recuperación por flotación disminuye significativamente cuando minerales con contenido de pirrotita son procesados. La flotabilidad natural de la pirrotita supera la cinética de flotación de las especies de cobre y zinc y limita la capacidad de la concentradora para generar concentrados vendibles. Este artículo presenta un diagnosticó de los problemas que se tienen cuando se procesan minerales con alto contenido de pirrotita, así como resultados de un programa experimental a escala laboratorio realizado en el CIDT de Peñoles y en sitio. La investigación se enfocó en definir un esquema de reactivos para poder procesar minerales con pirrotita en su composición. Compósitos de alta y baja ley de cobre fueron usados en la investigación. Se identificó el agua de proceso como una fuente de iones calcio y sulfato. Se desarrolló un esquema de reactivos orientado a promover la selectividad de las especies de valor respecto a la pirrotita, incluyendo tratamiento del agua de proceso.

The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. In the Preliminary Engineering stage, 30 existing tunnels were assessed and 28 were found to need clearance improvements to allow the use of double stack trains. Alternative tunnel enlargement methods were developed to achieve the desired clearance improvements, while maintaining structural integrity and minimizing disruption to train traffic. This paper summarizes the geometric and condition investigations of the existing tunnels, as well as describes the preferred methodologies to achieve the desired clearance. The clearance improvements will be implemented beginning in the summer of 2007.

La planta de lixiviación, extracción por solventes y electrodeposición (L-SX-EW) de Southern Perú es una operación hidrometalúrgica dedicada a la lixiviación ácido – bacteriana de los botaderos de mineral de baja ley de la Mina Toquepala, para la producción de cobre catódico de la más alta pureza. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe la evolución del sistema de control y supervisión de esta planta minera en Cuajone. Para ello, dicha planta debe tener una actualización constante de sus sistemas de control y ser capaz de cambiar con la velocidad a la que avanza la tecnología de Control de Procesos. Asimismo, debe contar con personal calificado que permita el desarrollo y modernización de los sistemas sea continuo y no dependa solo de expansiones y ampliaciones ejecutadas por especialistas externos. De forma que este software de supervisión, no solamente considera la capacidad de operar la planta, si no debe ser una ayuda tanto para el operador como para brindar información en la correcta toma de decisiones.

Most of the compounds present in slag are surface active. This gives rise to foaminess of slag. The foam life and foaming index are normally determined by the draining rate of slag through the plateau border, so the foaming index is directly proportional to slag viscosity and inversely proportional to slag density and bubble diameter. When a small amount of a strong surface active compound like P2O5or Cr2O3is present in slag, however, the foam life increases significantly and the above relationship is not obeyed. The strong surface active compounds reduce the draining rate from the film between the adjacent bubbles so the film draining controls the life of the foam. The thickness of the film, Marangoni force, viscosity of the slag, and diffusion of surface active compounds determine the film draining rate. Neutron activation analysis for mineral identification has attracted the attention of numerous investigators, judging from the publications on this subject in the past few years. 1-9 The appealing aspect of this method of mineral analysis is its proven sensitivity in the laboratory. In principle, activation analysis is one of the few petro-physical methods whereby a direct analysis for a mineral itself is possible in a borehole. The successful application of activation analysis requires the use of particular neutron reactions, measurement of selected gamma-ray energy intervals, and optimum bombardment and detection times. For copper analysis, Labanov et al., 10,11 using a low-energy PuBe source, reported an acceptable logging means. On the other hand, Pradzynski12, in analyzing ores and process tailings, used high-energy neutrons and photons for surface measurements of process samples. The work of Labanov et al. was based on measuring the rate of decay of the activated copper and hence was not as definitive as might be desired. Equipment is commercially available to carry out activation studies in the field 13,14 Gamma-ray spectra can be successfully transmitted over ordinary logging cables and, with borehole high-energy neutron accelerators and lower-energy chemical neutron sources, a variety of neutron activation methods can be studied. The purpose of the study discussed in this paper was to determine the feasibility and practicability of logging for copper using neutron activation techniques and commercially available equipment. The laboratory study showed that Cu could be detected in rock samples in the laboratory by high-energy neutron activation of 63 Cu. In the field, however, due in part to the large volume irradiated, the direct detection of copper using high-energy neutrons was not as promising. METHODS of determining the grade and tonnage in a mineral deposit have not kept pace with scientific developments in certain other fields. The most commonly used methods of computing ore reserves and grade based on diamond-core-drill sampling are the cross section, the polygon, and the triangle. Tonnage and grade may be determined by these methods with acceptable accuracy, providing a sufficient number of samples is obtained; however, there is no means of determining when an adequate number has been taken or conversely if the deposit has been sampled excessively. It is demonstrated that, by using the techniques of statistical analysis, a mining engineer will be able to determine when a sufficient number of samples has been taken to determine the grade of a mineral deposit within a specified degree of confidence. Using statistical analysis to compute the estimated average grade of the ore makes it possible to compute a fiducial interval, when a distribution of the sample means is normally distributed, so that there is 95-percent confidence in the statement that the true average grade of the deposit is covered by the interval. This report utilizes data obtained from the Maggie Canyon manganese deposit, Artillery Mountains region, Mohave County, Ariz. Four separate exploration projects were conducted at Maggie Canyon between 1936 and 1950. Present economic conditions have made it desirable to determine the amount of 5-percent manganese ore developed by these projects.

WITHOUT transportation, mining would be quite impossible. Any person familiar with the operation of a mine knows full well that from the minute ore is blasted, it is kept moving until it reaches the treatment plant. In the mill, by means of conveyors and elevators, the ore is brought from receiving bins to one machine after another until finally its valuable mineral is separated from the gangue. The finished product must then be shipped -either by boat, rail, or motor trucks to industrial centres, where it undergoes further treatment and transformation into finished commercial goods. Everybody appreciates that the winning of an or-e includes, amongst various operations, the moving of large quantities of material of generally low value. Transportation, therefore, must be considered One of the most important factors in the economics of mining. My assignment, this afternoon, is not to treat of that phase of transportation as it directly affects mining operations, but rather to consider some of the aspects of overland transportation and its influence in bringing about the development of mining camps in Canada. I shall take the liberty of rapidly surveying conditions facing prospectors, mine developers and operators from the time a region is still in a pre-pioneering stage until such time as a mine starts shipping its concentrates.

In the 1990’s, Técnicas Reunidas developed the Modified ZINCEX® Process to recover zinc from ores and secondary materials. The heart of this process was the use of solvent extraction to produce purified zinc electrolyte instead of traditional zinc dust cementation. This development was commercialized by Reunion Mining and Anglo American for primary ore at the Skorpion mine in Namibia with the first SHG zinc produced in May 2003. Horsehead Corporation through Horsehead Metal Products, Inc., its wholly owned subsidiary, is presently commercializing the MZP for the treatment of Waelz oxide. This paper will review open source information about the lessons learned and process modifications that have occurred at Skorpion over the past decade. It will also provide an update on Horsehead’s facility being constructed in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Coal-bearing Tertiary sediments of the Ravenscrag Formation in southern Saskatchewan host numerous deposits of clinker resulting from in situ coal combustion. Clinker deposits form when sediments of relatively low temperature firing properties overlie coal seams which are undergoing prolonged spontaneous combustion. The resulting fired material is useful for decorative landscaping aggregate, rock gardens, driveways, mud control and others. Predicting the occurrence of clinker deposits requires a knowledge of the spatial distribution of coal seams and the nature ofoverlying sediments. Knowledge ofpaleotopography at the time of coal combustion can assist in locating more highly-fused material which can yield greater block sizes. Coal data bases can be used as a predictive tool by outlining areas where coal is or was at or near surface and therefore may have been susceptible to spontaneous combustion.

On April 3, 1981, Harrison Western Corporation was awarded a contract by Amax Alloy - A Division of Amax Inc., to sink the Henderson #5 ventilation shaft. The project was located on the Henderson Mine site 88 kilometers west of Denver near the town of Empire, Colorado (Figure I). The Henderson No. 5 Shaft, located in an Alpine environment at an elevation of 3145 meters, was a 9.8 meter diameter concrete lined shaft with a total depth of 793 meters. Work started and continued with Harrison Western employees until January 15, 1982. At that time, Amax made the decision to continue the shaft-sinking with their own labor, and with Harrison Western providing supervision under a management service contract. Shaft sinking continued under this arrangement to October 1, 1982, at which time Amax put the Henderson No. 5 project on standby status until further notice.

A literature review on quantitative analysis of mine safety studies revealed that investigators use a wide range of statistical techniques for the analysis of mine injury data. Researchers have addressed the various issues of accident causation and prevention through analysis of mine injury data collected from mines. These studies are generally based on historical accident/injury data without considering the injured person/population at risk. In this paper, a public health approach, based on scientific methods of epidemiology, is presented to address mine safety issues. Epidemiology is the scientific study of disease and injury patterns among populations in time and space. Originally, epidemiology was concerned with epidemics of communicable diseases. Then it was extended to non-communicable diseases. Safety researchers found that epidemiologic methods are the best tools for injury research, because the occurrences of injury and the occurrences of disease are quite similar. As a result, some researchers started applying this concept to injury research. This paper presents some of the techniques used in epidemiologic studies and illustrates the application of a case-control study design to evaluate the role of some risk factors associated with injuries in underground coal mines. In this study, the injured persons were identified and, simultaneously, interviews were conducted to find the significant risk factors responsible for occupational injuries in coal mines.

In the study of the sintering of meta powders, we have come to the conclusion in this laboratory that further progress requires a more basic understanding of the operating mechanisms. This is emphasized in detail by Shaler. He has shown that a knowledge of the exact value of the surface tension is imperative for a solution of the kinetics of sintering. This force plays a principal role in causing the density of compacts to increase.2 Furthermore, a knowledge of the surface tension of solids is also applicable to other aspects of physical metallurgy. C. S. Smith3 points out the relation between surface and interfacial tension and their function in determining the microstructure and resulting properties of polycrystal-line and polyphase alloys. This paper describes one group of results of an experimental program designed for the study of the surface tension in solid metals. As a by-product of this work, considerable information has been obtained on the rate and nature of the flow of a metal at temperatures approaching the melting point and under extremely low stresses, a field of mechanical behavior heretofore scarcely touched by metallurgists. The importance of this additional information to students of powder metallurgy need not be stressed. Theoretical Considerations Interfacial tension arises from the condition that an excess of energy exists at the interface between two phases. Gibbs proves that this energy is a partial function of the interfacial area; thus: ?F/?s = ? where ?F/?s is the rate of change of free energy of the system with changing surface area, at constant temperature, pressure and composition, and ? is the interfacial tension, or interfacial free energy per unit area. If one of the phases is the pure liquid or solid, and the other the vapor of the substance, ? may properly be termed "surface tension," and is a characteristic of the solid or liquid. The attempt of a body to lower its free energy by decreasing its surface gives rise to a force in the surface which is numerically equal in terms of unit length to the free energy per unit area of the surface. Thus ? may be expressed either in erg-cm-² or in dyne-cm-1. Similarly, surface tension may be determined either by a thermo-dynamic measurement of the surface energy or by a mechanical measurement of the surface force. We have chosen the latter approach. Tammann and Boehme4 determined the surface tension of gold by measuring the amount of shrinkage or extension of thin weighted foil at various temperatures and interpolating to zero strain. The method is of questionable accuracy because of the tendency of foil to form minute tears when heated under tension. Their assumption of F = 2W?, where W is the width of the foil, is unsound, as the foil can decrease its surface area by transverse as well as by longitudinal shrinkage. Although their experimentation was meticulous, the paper does not include details of the sample configuration required for recalculating ? on a correct basis, even if such a calculation were possible. In the experimental procedure chosen here, a series of small weights of increasing magnitude are suspended from a series of line copper wires of uniform cross-section. This array is brought to a temperature at which creep is appreciable under extremely small stress. If the weight overbalances the contracting force of surface tension, the wire stretches; otherwise, it shrinks. The magnitude of the strain is determined by the amount of unbalance, so a plot of strain vs. load should cross the zero strain axis at w = F?. If balance is visualized as a thermodynamic equilibrium, the critical load is readily calculated.
