This paper focuses on developing a comprehensive and pragmatic information technology (IT) strategy for low-margin construction activities. This forms part of the realignment of the general business strategy, and refocusing the operational model. The main elements of the IT strategy formation are analysis of the current IT environment in terms of software and hardware, carrying out a gap analysis, and developing individual functional digitalisation strategies in construction execution based on Building Information Modelling (BIM), business administration processes, communication, business intelligence (BI) and reporting, and data security. Further, substantial emphasis is given to the sustainable strategy implementation in terms of hardware and software readjustments, their integration, user training, and defining the way forward.

"Solvent extraction (SX) is one of the most effective techniques for the multi-metal separation. However, repetitive pre-treatment of feed-in solutions and/or multi-steps two phase equilibrating in conventional SX processes were always unavoidable due to the poor separation selectivity between those metals with similar physicochemical properties. In this paper, our recent efforts, aimed to develop a “Three Liquid Phase Extraction” (TLPE) strategy for one-step separation and selective enrichment of different metals respectively into three coexisted liquid phases, are reviewed. Various feasible “Three Liquid Phase Systems” (TLPS) are evaluated. The TLPE technique provides a potential possibility for multiphase extraction to separate multi-metals.INTRODUCTIONLiquid-liquid Solvent Extraction (SX) is one of the most effective techniques for metal separation and purification. Traditionally, extraction and separation of multiple valuable metals from the leaching solutions of complex ores, industrial wastes and byproducts have to face such difficulties that multiple target metals with similar physicochemical properties co-exist in the solutions, and therefore their mutual separation selectivities are very poor. In conventional organic-water two phase SX processes, repetitive pre-treatment of feed-in solutions including the adjustment of the solution acidity, removal of impurities and/or multi-step liquid-liquid two phase equilibration were always unavoidable (Wang and Chen, 2001). Only one of the target metals is obtained in each extraction step, therefore the whole separation processes for multi-metal separation are typically very long and costly.Liquid-liquid-liquid three phase extraction is a developing technique for separation of complex systems containing multiple target components (Tan, 2003; Shen, 2006; Yu, 2009). The technique is in fact a three-liquid-phase selectively partitioning of different target components through the control of phase-forming behaviors of extraction system to create a unique separation medium with three co-existed liquid phases. The separation selectivity of “Three-Liquid-Phase System” (TLPS) may derive from its three-layered liquid phases from up to down with different hydrophobic or hydrophilic environment, and therefore each phase has its own specific selectivity for dissolving of an individual component. In a well designed “Three-Liquid-Phase System” (TLPS), multiphase extraction and selective separation of different components respectively into three different liquid phases can be achieved by only one-step of extraction. Owing to its distinct advantages, “Three-Liquid-Phase Extraction” (TLPE) technique has found many potential applications in purification of various organic chemicals (Shen, 2007) and biological activities (Chen, 2002; Tan, 2006; Jiang, 2008), treatment of environmental wastewaters (Shen, 2006; Yu, 2009; Yu, 2010; He, 2012), extraction of valuable components in natural products (Liu, 2010) and separation of multi-metals in complex leaching solutions (Jin, 2009)."

Introduction When one thinks of a coal stripping deposit, the picture that usually comes to mind is that of a more or less flat seam from two to twenty feet in thickness overlain by ten to fifty feet of overburden, in suitable ratio for economic operation. This is the usual type of stripping deposit and is quite a common occurrence in various parts of the prairie provinces. Rather unusual types of coal stripping deposits are being presently worked as open-cut mines by Sterling Collieries, Limited, and the Co al Valley Mining Company, Limited, at Miles 47 and 48 on the Alberta Coal Branch, some 150 miles south west of Edmonton. These deposits are of interest chiefly because they represent turned-up and greatly thickened sections of the Mynheer seam, and as such they present their own problems, peculiar to the commercial exploitation of a seam of this type. The area in which these deposits occur was originally owned by the Pacific Pass Collieries, whose operations, however, were confined to under-ground mining at Lovett, some eight miles to the southeast. It was not until l918 that the value of these deposits was realized, when the Company now known as Sterling Collieries, Limited, opened their pit at Mile 47. At the inception of the work, coal was loaded directly into the railway cars by men using wheelbarrows. In 1920, a tipple was built, after which the coal was loaded by steam shovel into mine cars, hauled by steam dinkeys, and loaded over the tipple into railway cars. In 1922, the Coal Valley Mining Company entered the field at Mile 48, with an entirely mechanical equipment, and at the present rime these two are the only stripping properties in Alberta using mechanical equipment both for the removal of overburden and the loading of the coal. These Companies have operated continuously since that time, and have to date mined and shipped 4,000,000 tons of coal, and moved some 5,255,000 cubic yards of stripping. The present annual coal output for the two mines is about 240,000 tons.

The continuous automatization and digitalization of the different stages involved in any underground construction bring new possibilities to optimize the operation. One of the most important requirements for the development of these projects consist of a proper rock mass characterization for optimizing the stages of the drilling, blasting and support cycle. In the last few years the road to digitalization has gone through data science and big data, showing the importance of data gathered to describe the geological and geotechnical environment that surrounds the operations. Since rock characteristics have an important influence in the drilling response, the technological advances in the sensorization of drilling machinery such as the Measurement While Drilling system (MWD) allow to gather the necessary amount of information to be applied in data science processes to evaluate changes in the rock mass with higher resolution than conventional methods. In this paper, Machine Learning techniques have been used to combine data monitored from the drill rigwith scanner profiles of the excavated sections to develop an automatic geotechnical rock mass characterization model able to estimate potential zones of over- or under-break of the remaining rock mass in underground blasting. By comparison of scanner profiles of the excavated sections with the blasthole positions, an Excavated Mean Distance (EMD) between the contour blastholes and the excavated profile has been obtained, which may be considered as damage measure. Considering blasting factors as constant, the model combines the rotary, percussive, hydraulic flushing and the rate of advance of the drilling, and the confinement of the rock mass by depth, to detect zones with different rock properties. This provide an early information of the rock mass condition around the blastholes and the prediction of expected overbreak generated after blasting, being possible to design more efficient bastings, in which each borehole is filled with the right and necessary explosive charge. The analysis comprises data from 57 blasts (around 1700 contour blastholes) and more than 4000 excavated sections.

"While distribution of air currents to working faces is a necessity in coal mines, especially those having explosive gas, advancing faces in metal mines rarely have circulating air other than the ordinarily inadequate amount supplied through the compressed air system. Even where comparatively large quantities of air pass through main mine shafts and levels. whether the circulation is actuated by fans or by natural ventilation, only occasionally can a metal mine be found where any considerable percentage of the ""blind ends"" has circulating air of sufficient velocity to be measured by an anemometer or even be discerned by deflection of flame of candle, or of acetylene lamp; and unfortunately these ""blind ends"" include nearly all of the places from which rock is taken.During several years study of metal-mine ventilation in various mining districts of the United States, it has been found that in some mines many of the workers in ""blind ends"" practically continually breathe air with 0.02 to 0.04 per cent of CO gas from unremoved fumes from explosives; in other mines CO2 chiefly from timber decay and breathing of men, is so high that a candle will not burn though usually the acetylene lamp will, hence oxygen is below 17 per cent but above 12 per cent; in some regions CO2 from strata fills the entire mine forcing cessation of work; in other mines in dead ends, gases such as nitrogen, H2S, SO2, etc., are found under some conditions. In many regions with hot rock or water (especially in deep workings) men in blind ends must work with little or no circulation, in air above SO degrees F. and even above 90 degrees, relative humidity only too frequently being around 100 per cent; in other regions workers in blind ends in practically ""dead"" air must continually breathe enormous quantities of finely divided rock dusts. All of the above conditions are decidedly harmful to health and prevent the worker from delivering anything approaching an adequate quantity of work, and in addition, some of these conditions have direct or indirect effect in bringing about definite increase of accidents; all of the above mentioned bad conditions in ""blind ends"" in metal mines as well as their ill effects, are remediable by providing at those places adequate quantities of fresh circulating air."

Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C25073 was proposed by industry stakeholders seeking a potential solution that improves underground air quality and reduces operational costs associated with technology used to control diesel particulate emissions in the underground coal mining environment.The need to protect workers from diesel particulate matter (DPM) has lead the underground coal mining industry to install disposable filter systems on their vehicles. While the disposable filters are efficient at removing significant amounts of DPM, the following major issues have arisen:- high cost of operations; disposable filters cost $A250–300 each and need to be changed at least once per shift resulting in an estimated cost of up to $A164 M/a, in filters alone, to the NSW underground coal mining industry- improper installation, damaged seals and lack of installing a new filter when the old filter is removed; workers are still being exposed to excessive amounts of DPM.The ACARP project successfully demonstrated significant DPM emissions reduction comparable to the incumbent disposable technology on a proof-of-concept wall-flow diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, as well as satisfactory system robustness when assessed using an industry representative test cycle representing operations of a load haul dump (LHD) vehicle typical of that used by the Australian underground coal industry. It was noted in testing that the technology increased modal NO2 formation, but was compliant over typical operational duty cycles.One of the key benefits with the use of a wall-flow DPF system is its tamper-proof design, mitigating the risk of operating unfiltered diesel plant in poorly ventilated areas. Elimination of the need for continual replacement of disposable filters provides significant operational savings estimated to be up to 80 per cent of the incumbent technology.In addition to the above, the project also delivered a number of significant contributions to the knowledgebase of the Australian and international coal industry with regard to the characterisation of operations and control of emissions.CITATION:Coplin, N, 2017. INTRODUCTION This report describes the inspection of parts of the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA)undertaken for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP)by Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Inc., (PB) in association with Montgomery Watson Engineers of New York, P.C. (MWH). Support for the inspection was provided by AFC Enterprises, Inc., under Construction Contract CRO-333, “WM-11 New Croton Aqueduct Rehabilitation and Inspection Program.” The scope of the inspection work under CRO-333 included assessing the condition of the 10.3 km (6.4 mile) long, pressurized section of NCA and inspection of shafts, head houses and blow-off structures in both the pressurized and gravity sections. The CRO-333 inspection continued investigation work begun under ContractCRO-196, which ran from 1993 to 1997. The CRO-333 inspections were conducted from November 2004 to September 2005. Background The New Croton Aqueduct was put into service in 1891 to deliver water from the Croton River Watershed in Westchester County to consumers in New York City. Figure 1 shows the location plan of Croton Water Supply System. The design flow into Jerome Park Reservoir was 12.7 m3/s (290 mgd) and into the135th Street Gate House, further south, was 10.9 m3/s (250 mgd). The NCA has been operated as a gravity conduit from Croton Lake to Gate House No. 1, just north of Jerome Park Reservoir, since its original construction. The length from Gate House No. 1to 135th Street, which includes a major siphon under the Harlem River, has been operated under pressure. Croton Lake gate house, the north end of the alignment lies at Station 4+75; Shaft 33, the south end of the alignment lies at Station 1628+05. The diameter of the tunnel is 3.2 m (10.5 ft) in the siphon and 3.7 m (12.3 ft) in the Bronx and Manhattan sections. The pressurized sections, constructed in rock, consist of a brick lining surrounded by a mortared and grouted rubble backing. Figure 2depicts a typical tunnel cross section. "Approximately 355 tons of nodules from Chamberlain; S. D., ore were processed in the 1-ton-per-day electrolytic-manganese pilot plant of the Bureau of lanes at Boulder City, Nev., in a continuous 3-month operation. The ore, ground to minus 48-mesh, was found to be amenable to leaching with acid directly or after roasting under reducing conditions in a Skinner muffled multiple-hearth furnace.Unroasted ore gave an acid-leach extraction of 84 to 88 percent of the manganese, which after neutralization showed an over-all extraction of between 81 and 85 percent of the manganese. The amount of iron extracted varied, but it was always,enough to permit the use of ammonia for neutralization.Roasted ore showed an acid-leach extraction of 89 to 91 percent of the manganese. A large amount of iron went-into solution, so that it was not economical to neutralize it entirely with ammonia. By neutralizing with calcine to a pH of 5.0 and completing -neutralization with ammonia to a pH of a.5 an over-all manganese extraction of 84 to 86 percent was obtained. The slight increase in. extraction on roasted ore probably would not justify the cost of roasting.Acid consumption averaged 1.75 pounds per pound of manganese extracted. Settling rates of the residue in leach solution were to slow to permit clarification in thickeners, but a Moore vacuum leaf filter proved to be satisfactory. Purification of raw leach solution was .accomplished readily by hydrogen sulfide with a low gas consumption. Electrolysis was normal, without difficulty, and with -current efficiency ranging between 62 and 66 percent.The use of Chamberlain modules for the production of electrolytic manganese would result in an operating cost of 0.8316 cent per pound higher than the cost of producing electrolytic manganese from Three Wids ore."

The analysis of laminar flow of power-law non-Newtonian fluids in narrow, eccentric annuli is employed in this paper to discuss the problems of lubricant flow in journa! bearings and of errors introduced by eccentricity in experimental studies with concentric annuli on extruders and wellbore annuli. The velocity profile and pressure loss-flow rate equations are developed for the laminar flow region. In addition, the expected error in flow rate and pressure-loss measurements for concentric annuli as a result of eccentricity is determined. For example, a 10 per cent displacement of the core of an almost concentric annul us would cause a 1.8 per cent decrease in the observed pressure loss for a fluid with a power-law exponent n of 0.25. The corresponding increase in the observed volumetric flow rate would be 7. 5 per cent. INTRODUCTION Non-Newtonianism and eccentricity occur simultaneously in two engineering problems: (1) flow of lubricants in journal-bearings and pressure-reducing bushings, and (2) flow of non-Newtonian fluids in plastic extruders and wellbore annuli. The lubricants used for moving parts are often non-Newtonian in character — often they are plastic in behavior. A solution to the problem of flow of non-Newtonian fluids in narrow eccentric annuli is particularly pertinent to this problem. In all experimental studies of laminar flow of fluids in concentric annuli, such as in extruders and well casings, the error due to eccentricity must be estimated or studied. A number of publicationsl-4,6,7 have dealt with this problem for Newtonian fluids; however, I am not aware of work for non-Newtonian fluids. This work is directed to the non-Newtonian problem. Before the solution to the problem is given, the pertinent conclusions from the work on Newtonian fluids will be reviewed. Heyda 1 and Redberger and Charles 2 have published general solutions to the problem of the laminar flow of Newtonian fluids in eccentric annuli, apparently without knowing of the earlier work of Ca ld well 3 and Bairstow and Berry,4 which is reported by Dryden, et al. 5 Although several mathematical routes are encompassed by the work of these authors, the results appear to be equivalent. Redberger and Charles2 show that the error caused by eccentricity in concentric annuli is negligible for small diameter ratios (k < 0.5); however, for large diameter ratios (k + l), the error in the predicted flow rate can be as great as 100 per cent or more. Partial solutions to the problem are available from the work of Dryden,5 Tao and Donovan6 and Piercy, et a1.7 Tao and Donovan examined the case of flow in narrow, eccentric annuli (k + 1) with and without rotation of the annular core. These authors also reviewed previous work on this subject and verified their approach with experimental data. Dryden gives the solution for the limiting case of complete eccentricity or tangency. Piercy, et a l. published an early solution to the problem of narrow eccentric annular flow. The conclusions of Redberger and Charles2 and the experimental proof of Tao and Donovan6 both suggest that the region of large diameter ratios (k + 1) is of main interest and that the parallel planes approximation to the solution in this region is satisfactory. This method will now be extended to the laminar flow of non-Newtonian fluids in narrow eccentric annuli. THEORETICAL SOLUTION The geometrical aspects of the problem are illustrated in Fig. 1. To represent the non-Newtonian fluid the power-law model was selected. This model has many disadvantages which have been pointed out; nevertheless, its simplicity, its frequent and wide applicability justify its use in this work. Fredrickson and Bird8 and Savins9 have used it as a basis for a theoretical study of laminar flow of non-Newtonian fluids in concentric annuli.

The mining industry&apos;s image is molded by what the general public knows, or thinks they know about mining. As we prepared for the production of Caterpillar&apos;s educational film, Common Ground, we first had to find out exactly what the public perceptions about mining were. Before we could educate people about mining, we had to find out what they already thought. As we broke down those perceptions, we were able to narrow our focus to relevant, realistic approaches for the film. We found out what people didn&apos;t know about mining. And most importantly, we singled out the facts they should know... facts that could create more favorable attitudes. This research was instrumental in our final direction for the Common Ground project.

This is one of a series of papers published by the Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and costs. The Tennessee-Schuylkill Corporation, Chloride, Ariz., mines and mills a lead-zinc ore containing gold, silver, and a small amount of copper. The mill products are lead and zinc concentrates that are shipped to smelters. The company was the second largest producer of lead and zinc in Arizona in 1937 and was seventh in gold production. Operations discussed are those being conducted at the mine in October 1938 and are representative of the complete operating period from 1936 to date.

Indonesia over the last 15 years has experienced a surge in coal exploration, which has led to the development of a major export industry. This coal exploration has improved the understanding of the geology of the Indonesian coal deposits. The main economic coal deposits are of Eocene and Miocene to Pliocene age, which mainly occur in Kalimantan and Sumatra and were formed from peat deposits in an equatorial paleoclimate similar to that prevailing today. Some of these peats were domed peats, which grew above the normal water tables, under a climate of year-round rainfall; these peats grew above the level at which waterborne mineral matter can enter the system, resulting in low ash and sulphur, and locally very thick coal. It is believed that such peats have formed the unusually thick, low ash, and low sulphur Miocene coals of Indonesia. Coal deposits of Eocene age are typically characterised by thinner seams, with relatively higher contents of ash and sulphur. The Miocene coals and Eocene coals both appear to have formed in lacustrine, coastal plain or deltaic depositional environments, similar to the modern peat-forming environments of eastern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan. The Eocene coals formed mainly in extensional tectonic settings. Miocene - Pliocene coal deposits formed in a range of tectonic settings; the most significant, for large economic coal deposits, are the foreland basin setting of the large Neogene coal deposits of South Sumatra.

"Many manganese ores contain from 0.1 to several percent cobalt. If such ores arc used for the production of ferromanganese, the cobalt is lost; on the other hand, if they are used for the production of electrolytic manganese, the cobalt can be recovered during the purification of the electrolyte.The production of cobalt in the United States is insignificant compared to the amount consumed, most of which is imported from the Belgian Congo. Cobalt-bearing manganese ores may therefore constitute an important reserve of cobalt in times of emergency. Moreover, the combined value of manganese and cobalt in some ores may be sufficient to warrant the recovery of both metals by the electrolytic manganese process, whereas the recovery of either manganese or cobalt alone might not be economically feasible.In view of the potential importance of manganese ores as a source of cobalt, a survey has boon made of the cobalt content of manganese ores. Most of the data have been obtained from analyses made in the Bureau of Mines, but valuable data have also been obtained from publications of the Geological Survey, various State publications, and other sources. Unfortunately, most published analyses of manganese ores do not include cobalt determinations; when such analyses were fairly detailed, but did not include cobalt, it was presumed that cobalt was not present in significant quantity.Information on the cobalt content of domestic manganese ores is given in table 1. Ores containing 0.1 percent or more cobalt are listed in table 2, and the districts in which such ores occur are shown in figure 1. Most of the known cobalt-bearing manganese ores occur in the southeastern part of the United States. A group of deposits in central Arizona and a few scattered deposits in other States also' contain cobalt."

Ontario has a diverse industrial mineral resource base including abundant resources of structural industrial minerals such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, clay, shale, limestone and dolostone. These resources are used in the production of aggregates, brick, metallurgical stone, fillers, lime, cement and other construction materials. The majority of the operations are in deposits of Paleozoic and Quaternary age in southern Ontario, close to the major markets. Province-wide, there were over 140 million metric tonnes of aggregates produced in 1985, approximately 115 million tonnes of which was produced in southern Ontario with the remainder being largely from Crown land in northern Ontario. The structural industrial minerals account for over 80% of the value of total industrial mineral production, with the remaining 20% of the value king accounted for by the non-structural minerals being led by salt which is produced in southwestern Ontario. A host of other non-structural industrial minerals are known but production is currently restricted to calcite, gypsum, quartz, talc, nepheline syenite and by-product metallurgical sulphur products (Fig. 1). Location and Market Area Major production is in the area closest to the large markets of urbanized southern Ontario and the northeastern and north-central United States. In general, with the abundant variety and widespread resources of industrial minerals and the large population within 400 miles of most deposits, the market offers great potential. Ontario&apos;s 9 million population accounts for about 35% of the entire gross domestic product of Canada of $476.361 billion dollars in 1985. This equates to about 113 of the nation&apos;s buying power being within a 200 km (125 miles) radius of Toronto. This major concentration of industrial and economic activity has resulted in a well developed industrial minerals industry fulfilling most of the structural industrial minerals demand in Ontario, as well as a subsidiary demand in neighbouring provinces and states.

Some observations on the kinetics of the iodide process are reported. The deposition rate is geometry-sensitive in a system containing a finely divided titanium charge. Further, results indicate that the iodine diffusion rate influences the velocity of the process. The nonvolatile iodide, Til,, forms in the hot filament zone, thus removing iodine from the cycle. TITANIUM metal of 99.9 pct purity may be prepared using a refining technique originated by Van Arkel and de Boer.&apos; The purity of this metal, commonly called iodide titanium, exceeds that produced by any known process. In a recent application, the method was employed by Gonser et al.² to prepare titanium rods up to 2 to 3 cm in diam. In the Van Arkel-de Boer system, the relative influence of the fundamental mechanisms: l—production of titanium iodides, 2—gaseous countercurrent diffusion, and 3—decomposition, on the deposition rate have not been clearly established. Blocher and Campbell" have indicated that the controlling step in the process under practical conditions of operation may be the reaction rate of iodine with the crude metal. Fast&apos; reported that crude titanium metal reacted with iodine rapidly, even at room temperature, in his apparatus. Little has been reported on the effect of gaseous diffusion or decomposition on the deposition rate. It is these aspects of the process about which this investigation is centered. An attempt has been made to separate these latter effects from those due to the formation of the iodides at the crude metal surface by a division of the experimental program. Reaction of Iodine with Titanium Apparatus: In the investigation of gas-metal reactions of this type, the chemical reactivity of the halogen and halide vapors dictates the use of all-glass apparatus. In such a system standard techniques for measuring reaction rates are difficult to employ. Here, a simple apparatus was devised (Fig. 1) so that some indication of the reactivity of titanium powder with iodine vapor could be obtained. A stream of iodine gas was evolved from a bulb of controlled temperature and passed over a sample of titanium powder heated in a horizontal tube furnace. The product of the reaction, TiI4, volatilized and was condensed outside the furnace in a series of four glass bulbs, each cooled to room temperature in turn. Preliminary experiments indicated that distillation was retarded in a sealed evacuated system due to a pressure build-up in the condensing end of the apparatus. Hence, the system was pumped continuously using a mechanical pump and two oil diffusion pumps in series, through a liquid air trap. The iodine bulb was made large and a capillary restriction was inserted between the titanium bulb and the condensers so that the iodine pressure over the metal would approach the equilibrium pressure over solid iodine crystals. The effect of this restriction on the evaporation rate of TiI4, was determined separately. The iodine bulb was heated in an oil bath controlled to ±2°C. The titanium bulb temperature was automatically controlled to ±5°C. Procedure: About 200 mg of —30 mesh titanium powder, weighed to 0.1 mg, was placed in the reaction bulb after part B had been joined to part A. Wheat straw was chemically modified by alkaline treatment followed by succinylation and sodium carbonate treatment for the use of cadmium and nickel adsorbent. The adsorption efficiency was calculated in different conditions. The experimental parameters were solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and initial metal concentrations. The biosorbent was analysed by FTIR (Fourier- Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) to investigate the changes of surface functional group. The maximum adsorption percentages of cadmium (>99%) and nickel (>98%) were achieved using 5 g/L adsorbent with 50 mg/L initial metal concentrations. The adsorption kinetic study showed that the reaction was pseudo-second order kinetics and the adsorption isotherm was well fit by the Langmuir adsorption model. The dynamic column study indicates that modified adsorbent has a better adsorption capacity towards cadmium than nickel.

The reduction of ilmenite pellets was investigated at 950°C and 1000°C under a CO-N2 gas mixture with 10 L/min gas flow rate. All the reducing reactions were conducted in a furnace with a thermogravimetric analysis system. The reduction rate is higher at 1000°C than that at 950°C. At the early stage of the reactions, with the CO concentration increasing in the gas mixture, the reduction rate increased at 1000°C. In addition, at the early stage of the reactions, a rapid temperature increment and a rapid conversion of oxygen were observed on the curves of temperature versus time and conversion of oxygen versus time under different experimental conditions. The solid reaction products obtained in these experiments were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometers (EDS). Metallic Fe with small amount of Ti dissolved in it and oxides of Ti were found in the solid reaction products, but the formation of any nitride phases was not found under the prevailing conditions.
