Mr. Chairman, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for asking me to your conference, with its most fundamental and appropriate topic of 'Investment in Mining'. I must confess at the outset that I am one of those Australians who has rarely visited your fair land of New Zealand. This is in fact only my third visit, with all three related to Institute Conferences, and all much too brief. In so many ways your country provides a counterpoise to ours, despite the obvious disparities in size and population. And I am not only referring to the Bledisloe Cup! We would certainly each be much more lonely without the other, in this strange long-lost corner of the globe û if globes can have corners. Such an important factor in common in our shared heritages has been the mineral industry we have won from our alluvials and our rocks û especially for gold. So much of the major mineral developments which have supplied the world's appetite for metals and fuels in the past two hundred years has come from the countries settled in that period by people from Europe, especially those from the British Isles. So much of the technology for mineral and metal extraction has come from the skills of those people in New Zealand and Australia. And so much of the further development of metal processing and manufacturing of productive equipment has come from those people and from their cousins throughout the world. It is, I believe, a fair question to ask why we have failed to build on those early and considerable successes, and why we have in so many ways apparently been so content to allow others to add value to our raw materials, and to take our technological developments on to levels far beyond those that our domestic markets could sustain.

A section of the largest Superfund site in the country has become a success story for engineering innovation and for cooperative problem solving. “Superfund site” and “success story” are phrases that are not commonly found in the same sentence. Yet, their use seems justified. The project’s certification of construction completion from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes a commendation. It reads, “for completing the project nearly a year ahead of schedule, at a cost substantially less than estimated originally and without com-promising the requirements for protection of human health and safety or the environment.” The EPA director who issued that certification also referred to the project as “a positive example of cooperation among all who have a stake in the outcome.”

AN ADEQUATE, dependable, and continuing supply of raw materials is indispensable to tile the United States and its industries in meeting the needs of an expanding Population, a rising standard of living, and the national security. The primary responsibility for appraising the status of the country's mineral supply and for making appropriate recommendations within the executive branch and to the Congress has been pinned in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In fulfilling its role of governmental responsibility for raw-material supplies and their efficient utilization, the Bureau of Mines has analyzed the factors in current and future mineral supplies and demands and has developed 87 statements for specific commodities that assess the national position and problems for these metals, minerals, and mineral fuels. These statements, which constitute the chapters of this volume, are based on lire assumption that nearly till production and consumption of materials in the United States are to be by private individuals and organizations, in accordance with the Nation's devotion to a private-enterprise economy.

A produção de carvão vegetal em Forno Container Rima (FCR) consiste em um processo semi-contínuo composto por fornos cilíndricos metálicos móveis, com exaustão forçada dos gases. Cada ciclo se divide em 4 fases: carregamento, carbonização, resfriamento e descarregamento. Após o carregamento com toletes de madeira, 20% de umidade, o forno é deslocado para plataforma de carbonização, onde permanece por 3 a 4 horas. A entrada de oxigênio no interior do forno é regulada para controle das reações de pirólise. Todos os gases gerados são conduzidos a um sistema de queima para aproveitamento da energia e eliminação do metano. O peso, a temperatura e a pressão no interior do forno, bem como a vazão, composição e energia do fluxo de gás, são monitorados continuamente, em tempo real. A carbonização finaliza quando é atingido o rendimento gravimétrico de 35% em carvão e 60% em gás. O carvão ainda quente é transferido para cilindros de resfriamento, permanecendo por 12 horas. O forno então, é novamente carregado e se inicia um novo ciclo. Cada plataforma de carbonização pode gerar 1MWe de potência elétrica, produzir 20t/mês de alcatrão, 450t/mês de carvão vegetal e eliminar 500t/mês de CO2 equivalente. Cada FCR substitui 60 fornos Rabo Quente, reduzindo em mais de 50% a mão-de-obra braçal dos processos tradicionais, pela valorização, humanização e qualificação deste trabalho. O carvão produzido atende aos quesitos necessários para uso como redutor na metalurgia e na siderurgia.

Physiol. 14): L3-L27, 1996.-The lung and other organs are comprised of both cellular and extracellular compartments. Interaction of these components modulates physiological function at the organ, cellular, and subcellular levels. Extracellular components in the gas-exchange region of the lung include both noncellular interstitium and basement membranes. Connective tissue elements of the interstitium in part determine ventilatory function by contributions to tissue compliance and to resistance of the diffusion barrier. The basement membrane underlies cells of both the alveolar epithelium and the capillary endothelium; basement membrane components exert biological effects on adjacent cells through receptormediated interactions. This review emphasizes current knowledge concerning the composition and biological activity of extracellular matrix in the alveolar region of the lung. Matrix synthesis and turnover are also considered. Directions for future research are suggested in the context of current knowledge of the lung and other model systems. EXTRACELLULAR MATRIXEXTRACELLULAR MATRIX is a general term that encompasses components of the basement membrane and interstitial connective tissue. The extracellular matrix has many functions. It provides structural support, compartmentalizes tissues by separating epithelium or endothelium from interstitium, and serves as a physical barrier. Both in vivo and in vitro studies show that extracellular matrices also affect cell shape and function. The matrix elicits a variety of cellular responses, including adhesion and spreading, changes in cytoskeletal organization and differentiation, formation of focal contacts and stress fibers, stimulation of proliferation and migration, induction of polarity and gene expression, alterations in metastatic activity, and outgrowth of cell processes (for review see Refs. 387, 462). Cellmatrix interactions play roles in embryonic development and organogenesis (for review see Refs. 1, 91), in wound healing (for review see Refs. 145, 327), iri metastasis (for review see Refs. 430, 431), and in angiogenesis (for review see Refs. 185, 186). The extracellular matrix is the subject of a large volume of literature. In 1994, over 1,000 articles contained extracellular matrix in the title or abstract. After a brief discussion of key aspects of extracellular matrix biology, this review will focus on the extracellular matrix of the lung."

Systematic practices for protecting crops from frost damage began in the United Metes more then 40 years ago when the Weather Bureau Fruit-Frost Warning Service was organized; however, various practices employed in frost protection are centuries old. Although there are areas where little doubt exists as to whether protection is needed, there are also circumstances where there is some doubt as to the need for frost protection. Many factors influence this, including not only critical temperatures but also the maturity dates of the crops relative to marketing. Critical temperatures for frost damage to trees, plants, blossoms, and fruits very with weather, plant variety and nutrition, and stage of growth. In the case of truck crops, a single night of protection from frost injury might yield big dividends with a variety of sweet corn or tomato that matures early while price is high yet be worth very little with a midseason or late-maturing variety. Consequently, it is the individual grower who must decide whether to use frost-protective measures on the basis of his returns, the quantity and quality of his crop, the marketing situation, the sensitivity of his crops to frost damage, and the frequency of damaging frost in his area.

The concept of using fluid dense media to separate heavy ore constituents from the lighter gangue dates back to 1858, when it was patented by Sir Henry Bessemer. Its use in coal did not begin until after 1917, however, when Chance invented a process (which bears his name) in which lighter coal floats in a suspension of fine sand in water while heavier refuse sinks. Conklin used fine magnetite in suspension as a medium for floating anthracite in 1922, DuPont designed a plant employing organic liquids in 1936, and Belknap used a solution of calcium chloride (which Bessemer had suggested, among other media) in 1937. Separation of magnetic media by magnetic separators from the suspensions in which they were carried was introduced in a Butler Brothers ore concentrator pilot plant in 1937. The media first used were crushed steel and various grades of ferrosilicon. Since 1940, when American Cyanamid used magnetic separators to recover and clean magnetite in a coal washing circuit, virtually all heavy medium circuits have been of that type. As long as static baths are employed, as they are in the processes above, coal smaller than 9.5 mm or 6.4 mm cannot be cleaned economically in heavy medium. The settling velocities of the fine material are very low, and consequently the time required to separate the lighter coal from the heavier refuse becomes excessive. In addition, stray currents in the vessel and the upward velocities induced to keep media solids in suspension affect the finer solids to the degree that physical size becomes a more important factor than specific gravity.

Materiais de interface térmica (Thermal Interface Materials - TIMs) são responsáveis pela troca térmica entre a fonte geradora de calor do processador integrado e o dissipador de calor. Devido ao seu baixo ponto de fusão, boa fluidez e cumprimento com as exigências de regulamentação (Restriction of Hazardous Substances - RoHS), ligas à base de bismuto têm sido investigadas para aplicação como TIMs de alta performance. Neste contexto, a análise das propriedades dessas ligas em função de parâmetros microestruturais torna-se, portanto, de elevado interesse científico e tecnológico para o setor eletrônico. Assim, este trabalho tem como objetivo desenvolver correlações entre propriedades de resistência à tração e a microestrutura da liga Bi-0,28%Ni solidificada sob um intervalo de taxas de resfriamento usualmente obtido em processos industriais. Por meio de microscopias óptica e eletrônica de varredura foi observada uma morfologia tipicamente eutética lamelar, composta por lamelas ricas em bismuto com o intermetálico Bi3Ni nos contornos. Os espaçamentos lamelares (λL) foram, então, correlacionados com os parâmetros térmicos de solidificação, sendo propostas leis experimentais de crescimento microestrutural. Ao fim, observou-se que, para λL < 101 μm, equações do tipo Hall-Petch caracterizam a variação do limite de resistência à tração e do limite de escoamento.

Ultra-violet lamps are also installed there in the mill, above the gravity-concentration tables, for control observations. Geologic Interpretation of Magnetic Exploration on the Mesabi Range, Minnesota ROBERT B. SOSMAN*-When artificial precipitated magnetite is oxidized at a temperature in the vicinity of 100°C, the oxide is converted into a chocolate brown ferric oxide of the formula Fe2O3, free from ferrous iron, yet possessing the same magnetic susceptibility as the original Fe3O4. This form of Fe2O3 is variously called "ferromagnetic ferric oxide," " maghemite," or "gamma ferric oxide," and has been found as a natural mineral. If a body of magnetite in the Biwabik were to oxidize to this form, the oxidized and leached ore body might successfully conceal itself from Mr. Jones&apos; survey by this ferromagnetic pretense. So far, gamma ferric oxide has not been found on the Minnesota iron ranges. Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials; and fourth, mention of laws regulating offshore operations. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of states or provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

"Stillwater Mining Company is the only U.S. producer of platinum group metals (PGMs) and the largest producer outside of South Africa and Russia. The Company controls a considerable portion of the J-M Reef and is currently developing the ""Blitz Project,"" which will provide a main haulage level, ore pass systems, backfill plants, and flow-through ventilation to increase production and ensure sustainable extraction of this critical strategic mineral. While driving two sub-parallel footwall laterals to about 8,125 m (26,000 ft) long, one of the development drifts experienced a massive fall in a geologically disturbed area created by a dike intrusion. Combinations of a void fill material (Tekseal), polyurethane injection, fore poling coupled with steel arches, and supplemental bolting allow safe and efficient advance through this geologically disturbed zone. The J-M Reef is a PGMbearing reef deposit located in the Stillwater Complex near NyeMontana. The mining property and location are shown in Figure 2.The Blitz Project is named after the Blitz mining claims and is developing the Eastern extent of the J-M Reef Project., This consists of a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter TBM drive on the SOE (1,562 m (5,000 ft) above sea level and east of the shaft collar) and a 4.7 x 4.7 m (15 x 15 ft) drill and blast heading on the 5,600E (1,750 m (5,600 ft) above sea level and east of the shaft collar). The Benbow Decline will be completed running perpendicular to the TBM by drilling and blasting methods. The TBM drift will be used for exploration drilling, ventilation, and will serve as the main haulage level. The 56E will be used for ventilation and exploration drilling. The Benbow decline will serve as the exhaust drift."

"Abstract - Diamond-drill hole DDH-B357, located 1.5 km north of the Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb- Cu-Ag volcanic-sediment-hosted massive sulfide (VSHMS) deposit, intersects three exhalative horizons within variably altered felsic volcanic rocks of the Nepisiguit Falls and Flat Landing Brook formations. These three petrographically indistinguishable iron formation intervals (Fe2O3T = 21.4 wt.%) likely represent cogenetic hydrothermal sedimentary units because they display a common geochemical signature: Fe2O3T = 42.9 ± 10.5 wt.%, MnO = 5.4 ± 3.1 wt.%, elevated base metal values (Zn+Pb = 1999 ± 1091 ppm), strong enrichment in additional exhalative components (CaO = 5.3 ± 3.9 wt.%; P2O5 = 1.43 ± 1.00 wt.%), oxidized signature (Fe/Mn = 10 ± 6), as well as a common immobile element signature (Zr/TiO2 = 0.025 ± 0.007) representative of a pelagic source. The calc-alkaline to transitional host volcanic rocks can be discriminated by Zr/TiO2, and to a lesser extent by Th/Nb: Nepisiguit Falls Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.053 ± 0.004, Th/Nb = 1.08 ± 0.37; Flat Landing Brook Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.107 ± 0.043, Th/Nb = 0.86 ± 0.17. A symmetrical repetition of the footwall-iron formation-hanging wall stratigraphic sequence is observed in DDH-B357, with distinct felsic volcanic rock domains separated by the three iron formations. This is best explained by parasitic F2 folds on the west flank of the south-plunging Brunswick antiform, similar to the fold closures known to host massive sulfide accumulations in the Brunswick No. 6 and No. 12 mines. Iron formation geochemistry and felsic volcanic rock chemostratigraphy from drill core sampling can provide an effective mineral exploration tool for the structurally complex rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp. The gold content of porphyry copper deposits ranges from less than 0.05 g/t to more than I g/t ((0.0017 to 0.035 oz per st) and the average is about 0.05 g/t (0.0017 oz per st) gold. Perhaps the highest grade mineralization found near a porphyry cop¬per deposit is the Ok Tedi Gold Cap ore body whose grade falls in the 2 to 3 g/t (0.07 to 0.1 oz per st) range. It is difficult to define a gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposit. All porphyry copper ore bodies contain some gold, but there seems to be a fairly sharp break in the gold content at about 0.1 g/t (0.003 oz per st) gold. There is also a problem in identifying dis¬seminated gold deposits that may have an indirect relationship to porphyry copper systems. This relationship is clear cut in deposits such as the Ok Tedi Gold Cap, the El Hueso deposit, the Fortitude and West de¬posits at Battle Mountain, NV, and the Sur¬prise deposit at Ely, NV. There are many other bulk disseminated, epithermal-type gold deposits - McCoy, NV, for example - that might be related to a porphyry system but where this relationship is remains very uncertain. In such places as the Goldfields and Tonapah district in Ne¬vada and in the El Indio, Chile district, there may be a vertically stacked ore deposit rela¬tionship between near surface epithermal deposits and disseminated molybdenite and chalcopyrite enargite mineralization at depth that may represent a deep porphyry system. This, however, has not been positively demonstrated. Most of the bulk epithermal gold deposits are probably not related to porphyry copper systems. Exceptions would probably be Ok Tedi, El Indio, El Hueso, Battle Mountain, and Lepanto where vertical or lateral zoning relationships are more apparent. This author believes that porphyry copper systems are related to a relatively unique type of intrusion that is probably distinct from, for example, the McCoy intrusivebody. For that reason, deposits such as McCoy, Chimney Creek, and the like will not be included in the definition of gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposits for this article. The interpretation of the origin of several of the deposits previously mentioned are subject to an unusual amount of contro¬versy. A study was conducted to investigate high gold grades in water lines and carbon fines collected from the Musselwhite gold recovery circuit. It was discovered that fine magnetic particles in the overflow from the carbon fines settling tank launder had high gold grades ranging from 2,000 to7,000 g/t. The -37 micron fraction had up to 17,000 g/t gold. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the gold was attached to the surface of iron particles. The objective of the study was to identify possible mechanisms that result in the attachment of the gold to the magnetic iron particle surface and to recommend process modifications that would reduce these types of gold losses around the carbon circuits. Solid and solution samples were collected from the gold recovery circuit and analysed. Two possible mechanisms were identified including gold cementation onto iron and heterocoagulation of colloidal gold onto iron oxides in the elution column. Possible sources of the colloidal gold include reduction of gold cyanide complex to metallic gold in the carbon regeneration kiln and gold detached from cathode in EW cell. Based on SEM+EDX, the sources of iron were natural magnetite and roasted iron sulphides. Thermal reduction of gold is believed to be the cause of dendritic gold from the carbon regeneration kiln.

O presente estudo teve por objetivo principal produzir um cerâmico composto de alumina, nióbia e fluoreto de lítio de forma a otimizar o uso do forno na etapa de sinterização. Para isso, ponderou-se a respeito da necessidade ou não de utilização de um patamar a 1000°C utilizado em estudos anteriores. Além disso, buscou-se diminuir a temperatura de sinterização, assim como o tempo de permanência em tais temperaturas. O composto cerâmico (Al2O3–4%Nb2O5)–0,5%LiF foi sinterizado a três temperaturas diferentes (1200, 1250 e 1300 ºC), com tempo de patamar de 1h. Foi realizado ensaio de Arquimedes para analisar sua densificação e determinar sua densidade. As fases formadas nessas temperaturas foram identificadas por difração de raios-X. Os resultados mostraram que a maior densificação foi obtida para a maior temperatura, de 1300 ºC. Foi possível observar também que um patamar de apenas 1h na temperatura de sinterização de 1300 ºC apresentou igual densificação a de outros trabalhos, com tempo de patamar de 3h. Este fato sugere que a temperatura tem maior influência na sinterização do que o tempo de permanência. Verificou-se ainda que as mesmas fases foram formadas nas três temperaturas investigadas, sendo tais fases as mesmas detectadas em trabalhos anteriores com patamares maiores. Isso mostra que o prolongado tempo de 3h no patamar de sinterização apenas favorece o crescimento dos grãos, bastando apenas a permanência de 1h para alcançar os resultados desejados e com grãos menores.

Recent recommendations of the Bureau of Mines regarding, rock dusting to prevent dust explosions in coal mines have been issued as Mine Safety Board Decision 32 and printed as Information Circular 7109.5/ The last paragraph on page 2 of I. C. 7109 states: After a mine or any part of a mine has been rock-dusted, samples of dust for analysis should be taken from the floor, ribs, roof, and timbers at such intervals of time as will give apple warning of need far redusting in order to maintain the required minimum percentage of incombustible in the mine dust. A principal ferramenta de controle do processo BOF reside na regulagem do sopro de oxigênio. A análise dos parâmetros de interação entre o sopro e o banho metálico compõe o objetivo deste trabalho. Através de uma análise visual da penetração e fração volumétrica da bacia de descarburação, foi determinada a melhor configuração de sopro entre diferentes combinações de bicos multifuros (3 a 6 furos), distância lança-banho e vazão. Foram feitas previsões sobre a penetração do jato a partir de um balanço de energia a fim de validá-las com o modelo físico. As maiores penetrações foram alcançadas com os bicos de 3 e 4 furos, com a maior vazão e menor distância lança-banho dentre os padrões testados. Todavia, as maiores frações volumétricas da bacia de descarburação foram obtidas com 5 e 6 furos, vazão e distâncias variadas dentre as ensaiadas.

This paper describing mining practice at Morenci, Ariz., is one of a series of articles on mining method, and practice in the various mining districts in the United States. At present (1929) practically all the mineral production in the Morenci district is from the Humboldt mine of the Morenci Branch, Phelps Dodge Corporation. The mining method used is adapted to the type of ore body being exploited; it has been developed by adopting methods used elsewhere and making necessary changes to fit local conditions. Improvements in current practices are still being made.
