One of the utmost severe mining catastrophes in underground hard rock mines is rock burst phenomena. It can lead to damage to mine openings and equipment as well as trigger accidents or even threat to life as well. Due to this, a number of researchers are forced to study some easy-to-use alternative methods to predict the rock burst occurrence. Nevertheless, due to the extremely multifaceted relation between mechanical, geological and geometric factors of the mines, the conventional prediction methods are not able to produce accurate results. With the expansion of machine learning methods, a revolution in the rock burst occurrence has become imaginable. In present study, three machine learning methods, namely XGBoost, decision tree and support vector machine, are utilized to predict the occurrence of rock burst in various underground projects. A total of 134 rock burst events were gathered together from various published literatures comprising maximum tangential stress (MTS), elastic energy index (EEI), uniaxial compressive strength and uniaxial tensile stress (UTS) that have been used to develop various machine learning models. The performance of machine learning methods is evaluated based on the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the rock burst prediction.

The Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 largely to determine methods of preventing coal-mine explosions; the Bureau's studies have proved that coal dust, except possibly that of some grates of anthracite, can initiate an explosion in the absence of gas and that its ability to extend or propagate an explosion of either gas or dust has been responsible for nearly all of the widespread explosions that have taken place in bituminous and other nonanthracite mines in the United States in the present century. It is believed by many persons that all atmospheric dusts may be harmful if breathed in large enough quantities for long enough time; bituminous coal dust is generally considered to be essentially harmless physiologically, yet there is abundant evidence of definite damage from inhalation of bituminous dust mixed or unmixed with the dust of other materials. Attention un¬questionably should be given to allaying dust in bituminous mines, especially at principal dust-producing sources. This publication enumerates some of the sources of dust and describes practical methods of employing water as one of the most effective of the known methods to allay dust in bituminous mines.

The bioleaching of sulfide minerals involves a ferric attack of the mineral with the role of the micro-organisms being the oxidation of the ferrous-iron back to the ferric form, and the oxidation of sulfur, either via thiosulfate or polysulfides, to sulfate. The kinetics of bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation and the chemical ferric leach kinetics of sulfide minerals can both be described as functions of the ferric/ferrous-iron ratio. The independently determined bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation and chemical ferric-iron leaching kinetics have been successfully used to predict continuous bioleaching operations.

The Stress Control Method of mine design provides enhanced engineering control over the behavior of underground structures in comparison to conventional mine design methods. The same Method can be applied to achieve design control of surface subsidence. The basic mechanism relating undergroued deformation and surface subsidence is disclosed by mine simulations, using the REM (Rheological Element Method) computer code, whose predictions have been validated by field measurements. The key components of the underlying mechanism of surface subsidence have been shown to be the stress envelopes formed in the process of underground excavation. It has also been demonstrated that significant control of surface subsidence can be achieved by designing the geometry and timing of underground excavation to regulate the formation of stress envelopes. A field example is given in this paper to illustrate this application of the Stress Control Method.

The Outokumpu Steel Belt Sintering (SBS) Technology is used for manufacturing chromite pellets that are charged into a smelting furnace for ferrochromium production. One of the main elements in successful furnace operation is the control of gas flows inside the furnace, giving improved temperature distribution in the bed during the process. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) gives excellent opportunities for studying these phenomena. An investigation using CFD can be performed relatively fast. For example, implications of different configurations can be studied within a day and an optimum design chosen. Therefore, Outokumpu Technology has developed a Steel Belt Sintering Model (SBSM), which takes advantage of a commercial CFD code. Each main physicochemical event occurring in a steel belt sintering furnace is incorporated independently in the SBS model as a sub-model, enabling every event to be studied separately. The commercial CFD code solves mass, momentum, species and energy equations for determination of the gas flow, composition and temperature. In addition, the Outokumpu SBSM takes into account the moving pellet bed, drying of pellets interms of water content, coke combustion, oxidation and reduction of chromite and the decomposition of carbonates and silicates. During the development of the model, numerous laboratory-scale tests were performed. The sub-models were validated against the laboratory tests. The reliability of the Outokumpu Steel Belt Sintering Model was validated against a pilot-scale batch-sintering furnace by comparing the modelling results against measurements. The aim of this paper is to give a brief presentation of the Outokumpu steel belt sintering model by showing some general modelling examples. Emphasis has been placed on demonstrating some of the main features of the model.

"Les Terrains Auriferes (LIA) Property, formerly the Malartic Goldfield (Goldfield) mine, ceased its remaining milling operations in the fall of 1994. During the early years of mining, the mill processed a non-sulfide ore with substantial carbonate mineralization.In 1977 after an extended shutdown period, ore from a nearby property, Bousquet, was processed at the mill. That ore contained larger quantities of sulfides, and unlike the old tailings, had acid generating potential.Upon closure of the L TA mill, the closure options considered for the L TA site were to cover with:1. a thin cover of 0.5 metres of borrow material (sand and gravel) to achieve basic erosion protection/stabilization; collect acidic seepage and treat with lime.2. a 2 metres of non-acid producing tailings; final surface to be vegetated.3. an engineered oxygen barrier consisting of a multi-layer cover; final surface to be vegetated.The paper presents the technological and economical methodologies that were used to select the closure alternative, describe the associated construction challenges that were faced with the implementation of the multi-layer cover concept and presents preliminary results on the cover's performance.In addition to being the first full scale demonstration of this type of multi-layer engineered oxygen barrier cover technology, this project had the advantage of using non acid producing mine tailings as part of the reclamation solution."

Various styles of gold mineralisation pose problems during sampling because of their complex gold grade distribution and presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation forms the basis of resource estimates. The design of a sampling and assaying protocol must be based on a thorough understanding of the mineralisation in question, which should include consideration of gold particle size and mass distribution. The proportion of coarse gold within samples has a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assaying. Choice of preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if sampling errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, often understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and LeachWELL. Proper application of the Theory of Sampling reduces errors during collection, preparation and assaying. A quality control/quality assurance program must be implemented and critically assessed. A case study from the Ballarat mine is presented, which is characterised by substantial quantities of coarse-gold hosted in quartz veins. Diamond core drilling is the key input into resource delineation. A number of different sampling and assay options have been trialled over the recent project history. This report describes the second phase of an investigation aimed at obtaining a wider knowledge of the problems involved in smelting titaniferous magnetites. Liquidus temperature measurements were made on selected synthetic slag compositions in the Ti02 -A1203 -FeO-Si02 -CaO-MgO system. Both the hot-stage microscope and the strip furnace (melting-holding-quenching technique) were used during test procedure to determine the effects of CaO, MgO, and SiO2 on the liquidus temperature of slags. The liquidus temperatures of slags studied ranged from 1,241° to 1,900° C. The lowest liquidus temperature for each Ti02 plus A1203 plus FeO weight-percent generally occurred when the difference between CaO plus MgO and Si02 was less than 12 weight-percent. In this investigation substitution of either CaO or MgO for SiO2 and MgO for CaO raised the liquidus temperature of more than 50 percent of the reported base slags when Ti02, A1203, and FeO contents were held constant. The results of this investigation may serve as guidelines for determining flux requirements in smelting a wide variety of titaniferous magnetite concentrates or ores.

Keywords: Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits, global warming, energy, auditing Climate change is nowadays being taken increasingly seriously, and the link between global warming and the carbon dioxide released in the generation of energy is coming under increasing scrutiny. The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997, after five years of negotiation. So far, about 84 countries have ratified this agreement, under which terms developed countries have strict targets linked to their 1990 level of emissions. However, ?greenhouse gas? (such as carbon dioxide) emissions continue to rise alarmingly. According to the World Resources Institute, greenhouse gas emissions in the USA increased 13% from 1990-2002, while Australia recorded a 22% increase. In contrast, the European Union, a Kyoto signatory, has seen a small decline in its emissions during the same period. This is led by the UK and Germany, who reduced their emissions by 15% and 19% respectively. The concept of ?carbon credits? provides a funding mechanism for companies in the developed world to compensate for some of their CO2 emissions by paying companies (trading credits) elsewhere in the world to undertake projects to bring about reductions in emissions. In the southern African mining industry, it will be possible to get refunded for undertaking voluntary emission-reduction projects. Concern about the environment is creating business opportunities. A preliminary calculation has shown that various projects in South Africa (those in the pipeline, with quite a high likelihood of coming off) could earn a combined total of about R2.5-billion, under the initial phase of the Kyoto Protocol's carbon-credit scheme, which allows developed-country companies to trade credits with developing countries. A number of local companies are planning projects that could comply with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), in which they will implement techniques to achieve certified emission reductions (CERs) of greenhouse gases. In order to prevent abuse of such a system involving vast sums of money, vigorous audits need to be carried out. A company has to prove it has made real changes and is not simply conducting business as usual under a cloak of claimed environmental improvements. PricewaterhouseCoopers has applied to become one of only a few international agencies that will be accredited to conduct validation and verification of the credits, by auditing what is called the ?designated operational entity?. An independent validator needs to confirm that the project meets the strict requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. The company has to demonstrate that it?s not business as usual. So, if you refurbished every five years, the next refurbishment is not a good CDM project, unless you can demonstrate that you will do something beyond the maintenance - that is what can be registered. So, Kyoto intends to get additional projects going, and the money for that is actually quite good - prices of 14 euros per ton of carbon dioxide not emitted have been seen. The price depends on who takes the risk for non-delivery if a project doesn?t deliver the emission reductions on time. The highly energy-intensive South African mining industry is heavily dependent on coal. There should be many opportunities for the pyrometallurgical industry to come up with creative ideas to reduce emissions, and there is now an additional financial incentive to encourage this. Companies can actually get money in return for doing these types of projects, in addition to the contribution to corporate social responsibility.

A gold mine in north-eastern Africa has expanded throughput from 5 to 10 Mt/y in recent years. The original carbon regeneration kiln was incapable of achieving required throughput or meeting process conditions to reactivate the carbon due to heavy fouling by high molecular weight frothers and collectors. A new high temperature kiln was required.The design criteria for the carbon reactivation kiln and associated equipment were revised, then implemented in close cooperation with a kiln vender who had previously supplied kilns operating successfully on highly fouled carbon. The result is a whole facility, holistically designed to achieve the technical criteria.The new carbon reactivation facility has been operating since 1 July 2014. What have we learned? What has performed to expectations? What could be done better?This paper presents lessons learnt regarding the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of the Ausenco Carbon Reactivation Kiln. ‘Lessons’ are associated with threats and opportunities (risks) that have that have been realised. Weightings and water inflows into longwall workings often occur together, giving rise to discussions on their relative genesis. Case histories are introduced which indicate that most water inflows are associated with heavy weightings. Resultant large releases of energy can lead to extensive vertical fractures, which can drain water from aquifers or other sources, such as separation accumulations, onto the face. Effectively control of water inflows in these cases depends on face support and weighting control.

A crescente geração e disposição de resíduos sólidos tornou-se preocupante, para tanto busca-se um fim adequado aos mesmos. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a viabilidade técnica, ambiental e financeira do uso das areias fenólica e verde usadas de fundição como co-produto em substituição parcial ao agregado miúdo areia natural de rio na fabricação de blocos de concreto para pavimentação. Produziu-se 3 traços com 25% e 50% de substituição da areia natural por uma composição de areia de fundição com os mesmos equipamentos e parâmetros comerciais e obteve-se resultados satisfatórios, como a resistência à compressão através do traço rico em consumo de cimento e com 25% de substituição da areia natural pelo co-produto atingindo 37,2 MPa, cerca de 6% acima do mínimo requerido pela NBR 9780. Já na avaliação ambiental esses blocos foram classificados como Resíduo Classe II-A Não Inerte e a análise de viabilidade financeira mostrou custo 1% menor que o bloco convencional.

The extraction of ore in panel caving operations also involves the coextraction of non-economic material, known as dilution. Forecasting, avoiding, and understanding the mechanics of dilution is critical to longterm planning. The models of dilution that are currently in use in panel caving operations are those by Laubscher (1994), who postulated that dilution is due to gravitational flow and depends on the height of interaction, the column height, and the draw uniformity. This paper presents a back-analysis of extraction and dilution behaviour at Codelco?s El Salvador and Andina Divisions, which use panel caving as a mining method. This analysis was conducted in order to review the existent dilution entry mechanisms and calculation methods. Three sources of dilution were identified. The first source is ?gravitational dilution?, which is due to gravitational flow and mixing as dilution migrates by gravity from a sector located above the panel under analysis. The second source of dilution is ?caving dilution?, which occurs when an air gap is formed in a large area and a sudden propagation of a hang-up occurs, inducing early ingress of waste into the production level from a level above. The third mode observed is ?lateral dilution?, which occurs when the panel is located next to an exhausted sector and the broken material enters the draw column early during draw. In the last two cases, dilution could migrate large distances horizontally. The mine data indicated that draw and caving strategy are key for long-term planning of large panel caves.

The methane content of virgin bituminous coalbed can now be measured accurately in the field with exploration core samples from vertical boreholes. The gas content of the coal per unit weight can be used either to design a mine ventilation system or to determine if degasification of the coalbed will be necessary before mining, and to determine the gas resources in the coalbed. The equipment necessary to conduct the test costs less than $50. The gas content of the coal in place in the ground is determined by summing the gas lost from coring, gas measured during desorption, and the residual gas in the coal. Upon removal from the borehole, the core sample is placed in an airtight container and desorbed for several weeks until the desorption rate is below 0.05 cm3/g for 5 consecutive days. The gas lost from the core while it was being cored and the residual gas are estimated by a new graphical method. The amount of gas remaining depends upon whether the coal is friable or blocky. Friability appears to relate to the depth of the sample below the surface, fixed carbon percentage, Hardgrove grindability index, and proximity to tectonic disturbance. Friable coals emit nearly 96 pct of the total gas during desorption whereas a blocky coal emits only 60 pct of its total gas. Coalbeds that are ill defined as to their blocky or friable nature must be tested in the laboratory for unambiguous analysis.

"Sub-critical crack growth plays an important role in long-term creep failure in brittle rock. Based on micromechanics established by using relationship between micromechanical wing crack growth model and macroscopic strain, and comparing theoretical model with testing results, a method, which applies the theory to real rock, is suggested in this paper. Using this method, properties of creep, damage and progressive failure in brittle rock are investigated. Effects of stress state on creep failure time and steady-state creep rate are analyzed and graphically presented. The results are helpful to support structure design and service life evaluation of underground structures with high geostatic stresses. INTRODUCTIONDuring the long-term operation in underground space with brittle surrounding rock, due to chemical action between pore water and rock, the failure of rock often occurs at stresses below its short-term failure strength, which brings serious effect on the long-term stability of underground structure. Thus, the long-term strength of brittle rock attracted wide interests of scholars around the world. The static fatigue limit was predicted by exponential function that is derived from abundant experiment data of stress level and failure time(Schmidtke & Lajtai, 1985), and similar result by relationship between stress state and failure time was also suggested (Lau & Chandler, 2004; Aubertin et al., 2000; Sangha & Dhir, 1972). According to relationship between steady creep rate and stress state during creep, a critical stress that transforms steady-state creep to accelerated creep was studied and the long-term strength was suggested (Tsai et al., 2008; Ma & Daemen, 2006; Lajtai et al., 1991). Based on the results of experiment in compression, the long-term strength of rock was defined by stress at volume strain reversal. When applied stresses are larger than the long-term strength, the microcracks in the rock will grow constantly, damage of rock will increase and failure of rock will occur finally (Chandler, 2013; Bieniawski, 1967; Brace et al., 1966)."

These reserves (including probable reserves) are estimated at 35 billion barrels and constitute about 11 percent of the world's total. Iran is the sixth largest producer of crude petroleum in the world. The 1961 output of more than 430 million barrels was 5 percent of total world out-put for the year. In the same year, Iran ranked fourth among world petroleum exporters, providing 8.4 percent of total world exports.

Apparatus providing simultaneous differential thermal analysis, thermo-gravimetry, and evolved gas analysis, has been developed by the Bureau of Mines specifically for thermal study of oil shale and other solid, natural fuels. The apparatus is described in detail, and simultaneous analyses on a single sample of an oil shale mineral, nahcolite, and a thermal analysis demonstration compound, calcium oxalate monohydrate, are presented to demonstrate the instrument's capabilities.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to improve mine planning and development, is currently investigating the effects of pillar load transfer, which can impact mining operations wi.thin a multiple-seam configuration. At two mine sites where such ground interactions were present, the Bureau performed a complete geological analysis and installed and monitored instrumentation to gather pertinent data on rock mechanics. Overburden depth varied dramatically in the vicinity of the study area and reached a maximum at the study site; innerburden thick-ness was less than a pillar width (40 to 4S ft); heaving was experienced in both mines where sandstone and/or shale floor units were observed; overlays of the mine layouts show pillars were not totally superpositioned; a maximum of S in of roof to floor convergence was measured; and pressure readings indicated pillar core loading only and increased to a maximum of 7,000 psig over instrument setting pressure.

Timely and rapid intervention to underground combustion events (fires, explosions, and spontaneous combustion) is the key to the successful control of the mine atmosphere and restoring of a coal mine to production. The focus of this paper is the utilization of a GAG 3A jet engine system to combat either large out-of-control fires or to render an entire mine inert when access to problem areas is difficult or impossible. This system is based upon a Soviet designed agricultural jet engine which consumes aviation fuel with oxygen (O2) from the intake air and exhausts combustion gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), along with the nitrogen (N2) from the air and small amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). The system is designed to approach stoichiometric combustion (ideally, pure burning that scavenges all the oxygen from the intake air). Therefore, these exhaust gases are almost entirely “inert gases”- i.e., gases which do not contribute to, and in fact, can suppress the combustion process due to the lack of oxygen. Other methods to inert mine areas have been used in the US and internationally, but these methods usually use low flow inertisation equipment or methods. Use of these low-flow inertisation equipment and methods has been successful in proactively rendering gob areas inert and has the ability to inert the entire mine workings. Keywords: co-generation, furnace CO-gas cleaning, disintegrator scrubber, Theisen In a closed, electric, reduction furnace, no oxygen enters the furnace from the surrounding environment. The off-gases are thus not ?burnt? and therefore contain a considerable amount of CO and H2. Traditionally these gases have been captured and burnt in a flare stack. Recent developments have led operators of such furnaces to revise this strategy and to consider utilising these gases as a fuel for gas-fired generator sets to produce electricity, thus becoming more energy efficient. On 31 March 2010 the new emission standards, in accordance with the Air Quality Act, Act 39 of 2004, were promulgated. The minimum emission standards according to the act require that the particulate matter emissions from the primary fume-capture systems on closed furnaces for ?new plants? in ferroalloy and calcium carbide production not exceed 50 mg/Nm³ and 25 mg/Nm³, respectively. By implementing co-generation, the producer automatically complies with the new environmental emission standards for an off-gas. As much as 30% of the electrical power cost, which is set to double in the near future, can be saved by partly generating one?s own electrical power. In December 2010, the National Treasury published a discussion paper for public comment, one entitled ?Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: The carbon tax option?. Irrespective of how the tax is finally implemented, it will result in an increase of production costs in affected industries. This paper focuses on the characteristics of a furnace-off-gas cleaning system for closed ferroalloy smelters, characteristics that meet the requirements of both reducing solid-matter emissions and operating a safe and reliable gas plant.
