Major problems associated predicting soil-structure interaction behavior are based on the fact that soil is neither homogeneous nor elastic and soil properties are spatially variable. There also exist significant coupling problems between the behavior of the structure and geologic media. When designing foundation or other geotechnical structures, the load transfer between the soil and structure takes place at the contact surface. This surface is called the interface. The behaviors of interface play an important role in the load-deformation response of soil-structure interaction systems. The purpose of this study is to develop improved model for simulation of saturated sand-steel pile interface behavior based on a general concept, called the disturbed state concept (DSC), which can characterize the behavior of saturated soils under dynamic loads. In this study, the Disturbed State Concept (DSC) constitutive model is calibrated and modified for steel pile-saturated sand interface and interaction by using the continuous hardening model for relative intact (Rl) state and the critical state model for the fully adjusted (FA) part in the saturated sand material. The general formulation for implementation has been developed. Then, the DSC model with modification for interface and saturated sand is implemented in finite element program based on the generalized Biot's theory. The interface tests under one-way monotonic and two-way cyclic loading and cyclic triaxial tests are executed for defining the parameters for interface and surrounding soils. Based on these parameters, steel pile-saturated sand interface and interaction are numerically simulated using the finite element program modified in this study. The DSC predictions show improved agreement with the observed results from laboratory test.

Located in the north-west of Kazakhstan is a world-class podiform chromite deposit. Donskoy mining and beneficiation complex (DGOK), a branch of Kazchrome TNC, which is a subsidiary of the Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) operates two underground mines in this area, one of which is the ‘10th Anniversary of Kazakhstan Independence’ (DNK) mine.The mine currently applies the gravity caving mining method, producing 1.8 Mt/a of ore utilising a slusher layout and rail transport to the hoisting shafts. The deeper zones form the largest mineral resources at the DNK mine and are planned to be developed in the next several years. At this depth, the generally poor ground conditions, combined with the high in situ stress state will potentially lead to extremely challenging mining conditions.This paper describes a technical study undertaken by SRK to determine the possibility of increasing the maximum production rate from the currently envisaged 6.0 Mt/a to 7.2 Mt/a, and to reduce the time taken to steady state production.Based on a newly created 3D model, the inclined caving method was proposed for the largest orebodies. This method, presently not implemented at any operating mine, although planned for two other projects, was deemed very suitable to deal with the weak rock mass characteristics and the plunging morphology of the mineralisation.Dassault Systèmes’ GEOVIA’s Footprint Finder software (a module of GEOVIA’s PCBC™) was used to determine the caving zones and production schedules. The total mine design was completed in Deswik software, and resulting schedules combined in Excel.In addition to the use of an inclined caving method, several other suggestions were made to increase the productivity of the mine, such as the application of a conveyor belt system transporting multiple material types, teleremote technologies and the application of thin sprayed liners to reduce the swelling of the rock mass.CITATION:Fuykschot, J J and Loewen, S M, 2016. KINETICS of the reaction of zirconium with pure oxygen at elevated temperatures have been studied by several workers for periods of time up to 6 hr.1-1 In two cases,3-4 . the experimental values of oxygen uptake, w, as a function of time, t, were best fitted to the parabolic rate law w2 = kPt + constant. In others,3,4 the cubic rate law w3 = kot + constant, showed better agreement. The most recent data of Gulbransen and Andrew4 indicate that the choice between the parabolic and cubic laws for empirical representation of the data will often be arbitrary. This is particularly true if the first few minutes of the reaction with a clean zirconium surface is attributed to a different oxidation mechanism, for deviations from either rate law were found primarily during the initial period. Thus, the kinetics of this reaction have been too uncertain to permit safe extrapolation to oxidation periods of practical interest (many hundreds of hours). The data to be described are of interest, for they indicate that the cubic rate law applies over long oxidation times. The reaction of zirconium with oxygen at 1 atm pressure was followed at 350" and 450°C for 500 and 200 hr, respectively. Abraded test specimens of pure zirconium sheet' 3.0 X 2.0 X 0.012 cm in size were oxidized by the procedure previously described,3 which included periodic cooling to room temperature for weighing. The surfaces were polished to a 4/0 finish using polishing paper wet with kerosene, then wiped with petroleum ether and washed in redistilled acetone. Fig. 1 shows plots of log ? vs log t. Each curve represents the average of duplicate measurements, and deviations from the average were generally less than 3 pet. The cubic rate law (slope = 1/3) is closely followed. The rate constants, 5.2, x 10 -6 and 2.4, X 10- (mg cm-2)3 per hr at 350" and 450 oC, respectively, are plotted as log k, vs 1/T in Fig. 2, together with cubic constants calculated from the data of Gulbransen and Andrew4 for abraded specimens from the same lot of zirconium. Their data refer to runs of 6-hr duration at a pressure of 0.1 atm 0 and under conditions of uninterrupted heating. In spite of these differences, the latter data yield a straight line which appears to apply equally well to the new extended time data. The energy of activation for the oxidation process, calculated from the slope of this line, i.s 38 keal per mole. This may be compared with the value of 47 keal per mole found by Belle and Mallett3 at higher temperatures. It may be concluded tentatively that extrapolation of short-term oxidation data for zirconium to obtain the long-term behavior is best done through the cubic equation ?3 = kpt + constant. Two examples from underground machinery are Bucyrus’ automated plow systems for the mining of medium and thin coal seams with minimum rock and Bucyrus’ intelligent CST drive system for high-powered armored face conveyors (AFCs) for efficient use of energy."

This paper will focus on two topics, namely (1) an innovative process for the neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acid streams produced during coal mining and processing and (2)optimization of this integrated neutralization process by adding small amounts of synthetic organic polymers. The integrated lime and limestone process has been developed to neutralize acid mine water and to remove sulphate (to less than1 200 mg/l), magnesium and metals. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1 500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. The process consists of the following stages: 1. Limestone (CaCO3) neutralization to raise the pH to 7 and CO2-production. 2. Lime (Ca(OH)2) treatment to pH 12 for Mg(OH)2precipi-tation and gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) crystallization. 3. pH adjustment with CO2recovered from stage 1 and CaCO3 precipitation. Retention times of 1 hour, 4 hours and 1/2an hour were required by stages 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The sulphate level was reduced to 1 094 mg/l, which is less than the original aim of 1 200mg/l. Chemical costs associated with neutralization, using limestone instead of lime, are reduced by 69% in the integrated limestone/lime process. The overflow water from the clarifier of each of the above stages generally contains a wide variety of colloidal impurities that may cause the water to appear turbid or may impart colour. This results in very slow sludge settling rates that cause overflow water with a high degree of turbidity and colour. There are a number of successive or simultaneous stages involved in the agglomeration of particles. To get optimum neutralisation of the acid water and partial sulphate removal to below the saturation level of gypsum (i.e. 1 500mg/l), maximum sludge recovery is needed. The higher the concentration of seed crystals, the larger the surface area. Therefore, effective removal of suspended and colloidal matter from the overflow of each stage is required and can be achieved by coagulation and flocculation. The polymers PAC6 and 3095 were effectively used as coagulant and flocculant respectively. The addition of these polymers resulted in a clear overflow in each of the above stages with a very low turbidity.

"A systematic study of the structure-mechanical properties relationship is reported for nanolayered composites of MoSh-SiC, Mo-MoSh, Mo-MoShNx, MoSi2-MoSi2Nx, and Mo-MoShMoSi2Nx (x=3-4) synthesised by sputtering techniques. These composites have been studied by nano-indentation and cross-sectional TEM as a function of annealing temperature. As-deposited layers are amorphous except for Mo. With increasing annealing temperature, first MoSh and then SiC crystallize, while the hardness progressively increases until the layers start to spheroidize and grain growth sets in at 900ºC. For the case of Mo-MoSi2, the layers react and the composite deteriorates rapidly. However, MoSi2Nx remains amorphous up to 1000ºC, suggesting that it could act as a diffusion barrier between Mo and MoSi2. In fact the Mo. MoSi2Nx, MoSi2-MoSi2Nx and Mo-MoSi2-MoSi2Nx nanolayers are found to remain stable up to such temperatures. IntroductionMolybdenum dislicide, MoSh, is a potential matrix material for high temperature structural composites due to its high melting point and good oxidation resistance at elevated temperature [1]. The two major drawbacks for structural applications are inadequate high temperature strength and poor low temperature ductility. Silicon Carbide (SiC) being hard and thermally compatible with most ceramics and intermetallic compounds, has been found to be suitable for second phase reinforcement in various structural applications and, in particular, the addition of SiC whiskers improves the high temperature yield strength of MoSi2 [2]. While most of the research in MoSb-SiC composites has been on the particulate form of SiC, laminated composites may offer unique properties. It has been shown that synthetic multilayers with alternating layers of metal and/or compounds may exhibit interesting mechanical properties [3]. Enhancement in mechanical properties by decreasing the wavelength of multilayer spacing has been studied extensively. In general, two types of strengthening have been proposed: (1) Hall-Petch strengthening [4,5], where the strength increase is inversely proportional to the square root of the layer thickness; (2) Koehler modulus strengthening [6], which increases with modulus difference and decreasing layer thickness. In the present study, we have performed a systematic study of the relationship between strength and structure in a number of different nanolayered systems based on MoSh. Layer thicknesses have been varied and their nanostructures have been varied by heat treatment. Previous work on MoSi2-SiC is summarized [7]. In an attempt to improve fracture toughness, MoSh-Mo nanolayered materials have been prepared but are found to react and deteriorate. Previous work has shown that nitrided MoSi2 (MoSi2Nx with x=3-4) is highly stable [8] and so nanolayered composites of MoSi2-MoSi2Nx and Mo-MoSi2-MoSi2Nx have been prepared to assess the' stability and mechanical properties of these composites. Although production operations at mines, representing the extraction and removal of the mined material, often appear to receive the greatest amount of attention, the emphasis given to auxiliary operations is continually increasing. This is due to the changing economic, social, and environmental climate in which modern mines must operate. Auxiliary operations can best be described as those activities that are not directly related to the extraction and removal of the mined material, but must receive proper attention if recovery is to take place in a safe, efficient, and socially responsible manner. In fact, certain mining auxiliary operations, such as strata control and ventilation, are considered to be of such importance that they warrant separate sections in this Handbook. Judging from a mine-personnel standpoint, it is not uncommon for a mine to hire the same number or more individuals responsible for auxiliary operations as the number assigned to production.

"The SR 83/US 331 highway is located in the Florida panhandle, where it connects the Walton County beaches to the I-10 corridor. The roadway is of vital importance to the economy of the area as well as its safety since it represents the primary hurricane evacuation route from southern Walton County. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) decided to increase the number of traffic lanes from two to four and improve the geotechnical properties of the moderately deep, very loose foundation soils, that had affected the highway rideability for years. The soil mixing was selected as the method to meet the unique deep ground improvement challenges of the project. The design required that Shallow Mixing Method (SMM) be used to build a 10-foot thick platform that transferred axial load to the bottom soil layers through a series of Deep Mixing Method (DMM) columns. Upon completion over 8,300 SMM columns and 1,500 DMM columns had been installed, with no remedial work required. Also, only 1% of the almost 1,500 specimens tested did not meet the specification requirements. This paper will describe the challenges encountered and provide valuable information that may be useful for other future projects, including details not previously published.INTRODUCTIONThe counties of Walton and Okaloosa have been a very popular vacation destination for many ears. The 50-mile long coastline boasts beautiful, sugar-white beaches and waters the color of emeralds. The popularity of the area has been growing even further, over the last few years. A consequence of this phenomenon is a fast-paced increase of the traffic flow on the SR83/US331 highway, especially at the bridge that connects the Walton County beaches across Choctawhatchee Bay (Fig. 1) to the heavily traveled I-10 corridor. The highway plays a very important role for the area also as a commercial link and as the primary hurricane evacuation route from southern Walton County. The increase in traffic has produced higher travel time, when not a complete traffic paralysis, and exacerbated the issue of ground settlement where accelerated wearing of road foundation occurred due to the presence of very loose, moderately deep, soils, that had afflicted the highway for several years. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) decided to put an end to these issues by increasing the number of traffic lanes from two to four and improving the geotechnical properties of the foundation soils. The Design-Build Maximum Price Request for Proposal (RFP) issued for the expansion of the Choctawhatchee Bay Bridge saw the participation of numerous D/B teams which produced various technical solutions. Among them, the FDOT selected the Skanska/Parsons Brinckerhoff (General Contractor) proposal which provided for the use of soil mixing as the ground improvement technology. The design/build team assigned Foundation & Geotechnical Engineering (Designer of Record) the ground improvement design which Treviicos South (Specialty Contractor) would execute."

P.L. 95-87 contains explicit demands for land-use planning in its reclamation and designation sections. Both sections require recognition of local land-use plans; however, the sections are not well integrated. Accommodations to these planning requirements may be found in suggestions based on British mineral planning practice. Better links can be created among local land-use planners, the state's permitting authority and designation office, and mine designers. Mining companies should take more interest in local land-use plans and in resource inventories; states should consider devolving to local government responsibility for accepting mine permit applications and designation of unsuitability petitions.

A oxidação da superfície de peças, ferramentas, moldes ou matrizes construídas em ligas ferrosas tem larga utilização na indústria. As aplicações podem ser as mais diversas, tais como simplesmente atender às questões estéticas, proteção da superfície contra a corrosão, ou proteção contra a interação química com outros metais. Dentre as técnicas industriais utilizadas há o processo conhecido como “Oxidação Negra” que é realizado em baixas temperaturas, com imersão do aço da peça em óleo quente, ou banho de sal especial, ou mesmo a frio (soluções especiais). Outros processos utilizam fornos industriais com atmosfera de ar para aquecer a liga ferrosa até temperaturas da ordem de 500ºC e acrescentar (“pingar”) água como fonte de oxigênio. E em outros, aplicação ceras hidrocarbonetadas e ácidos inorgânicos e posterior oxidação [1] com aquecimento a temperaturas da ordem de 500ºC. Nesses processos, o objetivo é formar uma camada de óxidos tipos Magnetita e Hematita cujas características de menor coeficiente de atrito e determinadas propriedades físicas e químicas serviriam de barreira à interação química com outros metais em contato. A camada de óxido obtida nas condições descritas acima é bastante útil para determinadas aplicações industriais, tais como moldes de injeção de alumínio. Esse texto descreve o processo de oxidação desenvolvido utilizando a tecnologia de plasma.

Quartz veins from the Martha Hill epithermal gold-silver deposit, Waihi, commonly exhibit crustiform banded textures. Visual differences observed between bands are primarily the result of a 1 to 1500 ¦m variation in quartz grain size. Quartz band textures are dominated by anhedral interlocking quartz mosaics, commonly associated with minor adularia and sulphide phases; these textures are interpreted to be products of amorphous silica crystallisation. The occurrence of rhombic adularia suggests that prolonged boiling influenced parent fluids. In contrast, the presence of coarsely crystalline bands, made up of subhedral to euhedral quartz grains, infers primary crystal growth from solution; evidenced by the occurrence of growth-zoned quartz within these bands. There is a narrow range of 3.3ë in d18Oquartz between maximum and minimum isotopic values for the deposit. Significant overlap in d18Oquartz values are observed between the Martha and Welcome lodes. However, statistically significant and commonly systematic differences do occur between individual bands analysed in most samples. Temperature fluctuations may be the dominant factor responsible for observed inter-band variation.

SOLUTION of a solid metal or alloy in a molten metal bath is used daily in melting operations, extractive metallurgical processes, and in brazing. It is generally recognized that temperature, time, agitation, and the composition of the solute metal and the solvent bath all affect solution rate. However, there is little information available in the literature on the kinetics of the process or the relative effect that these variables have on solution rate. In connection with an aluminum brazing study, data on the solution of aluminum in an A1-Si* bath to promote rapid solidification. The chemical analyses were made on drillings taken from the cast plates. The results of this work are listed in Table I. The thermal-analysis data were obtained on 200 gram samples cooled at approximately 1.5" per min. A calibrated chromel-alumel couple was used. The thermal arrests were recorded autographically on a General Electric photoelectric potentiometer recorder. The instrument was calibrated to 22.5 pct. The thermal emf was bucked with a Leeds and Northrup semiprecision potentiometer so that 1 mv represented the full scale of the GE recorder. Referring to Table I, it will be noted that the analytical results tend to be lower than the intended compositions by about 0.3 pct Si in the higher ranges. In view of the known difficulties in obtaining accurate silicon determinations by wet analysis when the silicon content is high and in view of the care that was employed in weighing and preparing the alloys, the intended compositions are believed to be more accurate than the analyses. Furthermore, when the thermal-arrest data are plotted against the intended compositions, a smooth curve is obtained, as shown in Fig. 1. This is not the case when the data are plotted against the analytical results. It will be noted from Table I that the 12.5 pct Si alloy (melt 4) showed a primary arrest at 577.6"C and the eutectic at 576.l°C. The metallographic examination of this chill-cast plate sample showed a small amount of primary silicon. These results, Fig. 1, place the eutectic at slightly less than 12.5 pct Si and are in rather good agreement with the unpublished Hanford data. In all of the subsequent work, the composition of the A1-Si dipping baths was determined by thermal analysis (spread between the primary arrest and the eutectic temperature) employing 12.5 pct Si and 577.2 °C as the composition and temperature of the eutectic. Material Preparation and Selection of the Techniques: At the beginning of this work, it was anticipated that, owing to oxide film present on the surface of the aluminum, difficulty would be encountered in obtaining rapid uniform wetting of aluminum specimens dipped in the A1-Si bath. The following etchants were investigated as possible methods of providing a thin uniform oxide film on the specimen surface: 1—phosphoric acid (H³O4), 2—fluoboric acid (HBFI), 3—sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and 4—hydrofluoric acid (HF). Tests with sheet .specimens (2x½x0.06 in.) of 2s aluminum prepared with these etchants indicated that the fast uniform wetting required for this work could not be obtained if any oxide film existed on the specimen surface. It's long been suspected that there has been an increase in the incidence of premature failure of rock bolts in underground coal mines over the past ten years. As far back as 2002 a study found a possible contributor to such premature failure in some Australian coal mines might be linked to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) (Crosky et al, 2002). That study suggested the low impact toughness could be a major influence on the susceptibility to SCC of different steel compositions. A subsequent study involving laboratory corrosion tests however failed to confirm any link with metallurgical factors (Villalba and Atrens, 2007), a finding that is at odds with field experience. Some mine sites today are still reporting prematurely failed rock bolts to the rock bolt manufacturers; the failures are being identified at SCC induced. To this end a research project has recently been commissioned at University of New South Wales (UNSW), which aims to identify the environmental factors causing SCC, through field test sites and simulating the conditions within an accelerated corrosion laboratory. This paper outlines the methodology that will be used in this study.

ABSTRACT Berea and Bandera sandstone samples were impacted with both 3/4-in. and 1/2-in. long wedges, each having a 60° included angle and a 0.05-in. flat, at various confining pressures, with borehole and pore pressures held fixed at atmospheric pressure. Samples were saturated with air, water, glycerine-water, solirol, mineral oil and soltrol-mineral oil mixtures to obtain a wide range of pore fluid viscosity. Penetration depth was held constant at 0.1 in. Dry and soltrol-mineral oil-saturated Berea samples were impacted at depths of penetration from 0.01 to 0.04 in. under 1,000 psi confining pressure to study crater initiation. Results indicate that viscosity of the pore fluid is influential primarily during the early stages of crater formation. Differences in bit force, crater volume and blow energy for tests parallel and perpendicular to bedding were significant, but decreased as the stress state was elevated. Crater volume, blow energy and bit force were nonlinearly related with depth of penetration. Crater volume was nonlinear with energy of blow. Fixed-penetration tests on saturated Berea yielded greater crater volume than did similar tests on dry samples. Differences in the nature of deformation for low values of bit penetration were noted between saturated and unsaturated samples. INTRODUCTION Rock failure during bit-tooth impact and scouring action constitutes a vital part of the drilling process and a difficult problem for researchers. Much study has been devoted to various aspects of the problem, and much has been learned about mechanics of rock failure. However, analytical treatment of drilling at depth remains difficult, partly because there are so many factors involved and because valid simulation of downhole conditions is extremely difficult. Forming individual craters by a bit tooth or chisel impacting, or indenting, a rock mass has been studied by many investigators.1-18 Similarity between single-tooth chisel impact and the corresponding action of a rotary bit has been discussed by Appl and Gatley, Garner, Podio, and Gatlin l8 compared the similarity in single-blow impact tests with microbit drilling data reported by Cunningham and Eenink.l9 Maurerll has used single-tooth impact data to develop a "perfect cleaning" theory of rotary drilling. Individual roller cutter-tooth impact data have been reported by Young. 20 Single-tooth tests in all of the cited literature were carried out on dry rocks. Inasmuch as any subsurface rock of oilfield interest is saturated with some fluid, it seemed desirable to study crater formation in permeable rocks saturated with a viscous pore fluid as a step, however short, toward more realistic simulation of subsurface conditions. This paper presents results of single-blow chisel impact studies on Berea and Bandera sandstones, both dry and saturated with pore fluids of various viscosities at confining pressures to 10,000 psi. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The same basic apparatus for single-blow chisel impact at elevated stress states, described in earlier papers was used in this study. l6. l8 Fig. 1 shows the complete experimental system; Fig. 2 shows a cross section of the pressure cell, with a sample ready to be impacted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two different rocks, Berea and Bandera sandstones, were used in this study. Both rocks have been used extensively in research, and rock descriptions can be found in a paper by Gnirk and Cheatham.15 Permeability to air of Berea is about 300 md normal to bedding and 540 md parallel to bedding. Bandera had vertical and horizontal air permeabilities of 18 and 57 md, respectively.

The property being worked by the Lewiston dredge of Placer Development (Ltd.) is on the Trinity River in Trinity County, Calif., about 9 miles north of the town of Lewiston (see fig. 1). The nearest rail point is at Rending, Calif., which is exactly 50 miles bar road from the dredge camp. Recently a very good section of State highway has been constructed from Redding to Weaverville, and it is now possible to use this highway for 35 miles of the distance between the dredging property and Redding. The remaining 15 miles, however, are over ordinary dirt road. No trouble is experienced in reaching the property except for a few weeks during the middle of the winter when snowstorms may make travel difficult but not impossible. At present the property consists of about 500 acres of patented land, which extends for about 3 miles along the main Trinity River and Stuart's Pork. It is being worked with one 7-cubic foot, Bucyrus-type dredge, which has an average monthly capacity of about 100,000 cubic yards. To the end of 1931 approximately 10,000,000 cubic yards of gravel had been dredged.

Figure 1-1 shows the basic transmitter design concepts used for the pulse system, the half-wave CW system, and the full-wave CW system. The antenna current waveform is also shown for each transmitter for typical operating frequencies and antennas. The switches shown in Figure 1-i were actually implemented using solid state devices. In all three systems the signaling format may be interrupted to conserve power and thereby extend battery life. Frequency accuracy and stability is achieved using a tuning fork oscillator in the transmitters and tuning fork filters in the receivers for all three systems. This provides the narrow reception bandwidths needed to enhance signal detectability. All three systems also use frequency assignment for identification purposes. The location schemes employed are likewise identical, each being based on detecting the null (signal minimum) of the horizontal magnetic field on the surface. Since these systems are basically similar, the primary purpose is to select the system which gives the maximum signal detectability on the surface from a manpack transmitter operating in the mine. Both the pulse and half-wave C W systems use a d. c. pulse to energize the loop antenna. However, with the pulse system, this pulse duration is short compared to the pulse repetition rate (prf), whereas with the half-wave C W system the pulse duration equals one-half the period of the switching frequency. In the pulse system, energy from the battery is stored in a capacitor so that during the switching interval the internal resistance of the power source can be considered almost negligible. Both transmitters must drive a loop antenna which is a reactive load having inductance, L, and resistance, Ra.

"INTRODUCTION Water flooding of oil sands in Texas as a means of secondary recovery of oil has been practiced mainly in the north-central part of the State, which includes the old shallow fields in eight counties, extending south through Wichita and Clay Counties on the Red River into Brown County.The Texas Railroad Commission, is empowered ""to promote conservation and prevent waste in the drilling, completion, operation, and abandonment of oil wells"" and ""to issue regulations necessary for fulfillment of these ends,"" granted The Texas Co. the first permit to inject water into the oil-bearing sand on December 7, 1935. The permit was granted after the Commission had conducted a number of hearings, which were attended by many operators interested in that method of secondary recovery. Through December 31, 1944, the Commission had granted 50 permits for water flooding. Of that number, 45 permits were issued for projects in north Texas, the remaining 14 being distributed throughout west and south Texas. By the end of 1944, there were 33 active and 5 abandoned water-flooding projects in the North Texas area, as is in figure I.Oil production in the North Texas area started in 1904 from the shallow sands (ranging from 100 feet to 800 feet in depth) of the Petrolia (or Henrietta) field in northern Clay County. Development was rapid and unrestricted during the boom period from about 1911 to 1918, and considerable waste of both produced oil and reservoir energy resulted."

The Fairmount Minerals, Inc., Maiden Rock underground sand mine historically delivered air to ventilate diesel-powered equipment at its working faces through high-resistance, 15-inch-diameter PVC distribution lines. In support of plans for expanded production, three new, low-resistance ventilation design alternatives were analyzed. The study determined that adequate ventilation for expanded production was possible with various commercially-available, high-volume/low-pressure fans combined with a systematic layout of control structures. The recommended re-design was implemented in 2001, resulting in a significant increase in flow volumes and a noticeable improvement in the mine environment.

No reator RH, a otimização do fluxo recirculatório de aço entre a câmara de vácuo e a panela é a chave para promover as reações de refino. Neste trabalho, foram utilizados água e solução de cloreto de zinco (ZnCl2) como fluido similar ao aço para investigar a taxa de circulação no modelo a frio de um reator RH em escala 1:7,5. A taxa de circulação foi determinada utilizando o método de pontes de Strain Gages. A técnica PIV foi utilizada de modo a calibrar e validar os resultados. O aumento da vazão de gás de 30l/min para 120l/min resultou na elevação da taxa de circulação para ambos os fluidos. Cálculos preliminares demonstraram que há grande diferença nas condições de arraste de escória entre os sistemas água/óleo e ZnCl2/óleo.

O compósito carbono-epóxi é um material altamente resistente à tração. Porém, as fibras comprimidas durante a flexão não resistem à flambagem. Dessa forma, faz-se necessário um estudo mais detalhado. Este trabalho consiste em verificar quais propriedades mecânicas dependem exclusivamente da orientação das malhas das fibras. Corpos de prova de orientação 0°/90° e 0°/90°/±45° foram processados e ensaiados em flexão de três pontos, de acordo com as normas ASTM E855 e D790, em uma máquina universal de ensaio MTS – Material Test System com capacidade de 250 kN. Inicialmente, os tecidos sofreram o tratamento superficial da silanização, promovendo a futura adesão das fibras na resina. Após a silanização, as lâminas foram montadas e impregnadas com a resina epóxi. A cura da resina do compósito foi obtida em uma estufa Fanem modelo 320°C a 120°C por uma hora, subsequentemente os corpos de prova foram obtidos utilizando-se o corte à jato d’água. Concluiu-se que as falhas de todos os corpos de prova foram devido à tração. Corpos de prova com volumes de vazios internos apresentaram menores valores de rigidez e aqueles com mecanismos de fratura como flambagem e delaminação apresentaram valores de resistência menores.
