This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2008 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry, and presents analyses of exploration activities by the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2008: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia (Metals Economics Group, 2008a, b), and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2008 and compiled by the USGS. The MEG information summarizes planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2008, primarily for precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver) and base metals (copper, lead, nickel and zinc). MEG includes information on additional mineral commodities only where it is available. Information on uranium exploration was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007, although this information was not included in the USGS analysis. The MEG survey methodology was changed in 1999 to include companies with exploration budgets between $100,000 and $2.9 million, as well as those companies included in prior studies whose anticipated budgets were above $2.9 million. MEG estimates that its post-1999 surveys cover at least 90 percent of world nonferrous nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 2008 survey is reported by MEG to cover an estimated 95 percent. Companies that chose not to participate in the MEG study, private companies that do not publish data, and government-funded exploration activities make up the majority of the remaining 5 percent. MEG included 91 more companies in its 2008 survey than it did in 2007 USGS compilations of site data described here primarily include nonfuel minerals, with an emphasis on base metals, diamond and precious metals. Analyses are based on information provided by USGS mineral commodity and country specialists and by other USGS scientists, as well as industry contacts and trade journals.

The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2 Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological models even further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip. Amostras de aço baixo carbono (aço ABNT 1015) foram submetidas a tratamentos termoquímicos de cementação sólida fazendo-se uso de duas fontes distintas de carbono. Amostras do aço foram empacotadas em uma mistura de pós constituída pela fonte de carbono e cal hidratada e tratadas a 1000oC por 8 horas. As fontes avaliadas foram um tipo de carvão vegetal e uma remessa de coque de baixa qualidade metalúrgica. Realizados os tratamentos termoquímicos, as amostras cementadas foram devidamente caracterizadas por microscopia óptica e pela aplicação de ensaios de microdureza Vicker. Duas amostras cementadas foram, na sequência, submetidas a tratamentos térmicos de têmpera em água fazendo-se uso de duas temperaturas de austenitização (860ºC e 920ºC) e também foram caracterizadas. Observou-se que no processo de cementação sólida, a peça cementada com carvão vegetal apresentou melhores resultados do que a cementada com coque de baixa qualidade. Com carvão vegetal, a camada cementada se mostrou mais espessa e homogênea em todo o perímetro das amostras. A amostra cementada com o coque de baixa qualidade apresentou, além da menor espessura de camada cementada, heterogeneidades grosseiras no perímetro da peça.

O sucesso da utilização do método de reparo/prevenção de refratários de convertedores LD chamado Slag Splashing tem relação com as propriedades físico-químicas da escória, em especial a sua viscosidade. Através de uma simulação termodinâmica feita no software FactSage que tomou como base a equação de Einstein-Roscoe utilizando uma escória de composição representativa de uma escória industrial, junto de uma simulação a frio utilizando soluções representando escórias com variadas frações sólidas, foi possível correlacionar a viscosidade do modelo a frio, avaliando a possibilidade de transposição de resultados desse modelo para a prática industrial em escórias com frações sólidas de até 20%, sendo que acima desse valor um modelo mais assertivo deve ser restabelecido. Por simulação física a frio em um modelo de conversor de escala de 1/10 em relação aos conversores de 340 toneladas da Ternium Brasil, utilizando soluções representativas de escórias industriais com frações sólidas de 10 a 40%, avaliou-se a influência da viscosidade na intensidade na projeção de escória durante o processo do Slag Splashing, deixando claro o efeito da fluidez ou da alta viscosidade na altura, localização e qualidade das projeções.

Coal production in the United States reached a record level in 2005, ending the year at 1.03 Gt (1,133.3 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2005 was 19.2 Mt (21.2 million st) higher than the 2004 level of 1 Gt (1,112.1 million st) and surpassed the prior record set in 2001 by 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st). Although total U.S. coal consumption rose in 2005, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sector by 2.2 percent and declined in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly.

The paper describes Online Master of Engineering Program at the University of Missouri-Rolla and discusses the experience gained during the first three years of its offering. This innovative educational program is designed primarily for mature students with an engineering or science background who want to acquire or upgrade their knowledge of mining engineering. Students can specialize in several different areas of mining, such as surface mining, underground mining, mine environment and the like. All courses constituting the program are taken online, through the Internet, without the need to attend the UMR campus in person.

In ilmenite smelting, the FeO content of the feed material (nominally FeO.TiO2) is decreased by reduction with carbon. In a parallel reaction, a significant amount of the TiO2 is reduced toTi2O3. One of the striking features of these reactions is a consistent relationship between the extents of FeO and TiO2 reduction; this relationship is independent of furnace size. It was recently proposed that this relationship follows from the solidification behaviour of the slag, where the final slag composition corresponds to the minimum melting point (?eutectic groove?) in the FeO-TiO2-Ti2O3 phase system; the hypothesis is that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining stabilizes the slag composition. If this is the case, the system of slag and freeze lining must be capable of correcting two types of disturbances: thermal and compositional. Thermal disturbances result from incorrect power input, for the feed rates of ilmenite and reductant. For example, excessive power input will tend to overheat the slag, causing the freeze lining to melt partially, establishing a new steady-state heat loss from the furnace. Compositional disturbances result from an incorrect reductant input for the given power and ilmenite input. In this work, the dynamic response of the slag and freeze lining to different inputs (flow rates of ilmenite and reductant, and power input) is modelled. The model is based on solidification equilibria, and quantified heat loss through the freeze lining. The conclusion is that the solidification equilibrium cannot constrain the composition to the eutectic groove for typical operating conditions. Mr Kapp's paper helps considerably to clarify the subsidence/mine geometry relationships in New South Wales. It is in the best tradition of the presentation of field investigations such as has built up internationalknowledge over the years.The Author has plotted in Fig. 10, the maximum subsidence developed over each of a number of panels of different width/depth ratios and concludes that the maximum possible subsidence over a super critical extractionarea is around 0.65 of the mining height and that this is reached with the critical width/depth ratio of extraction of around 1.5.Although, as Mr. Kapp says, the maximum possible subsidence in the UK can reach 90% of the seam thickness extracted the more usual figure for the first seam is up to 80%. It has also been found in the UK that with shallow workings such as those at Kemiro Coliery the critical width of extraction is 2.0 or more times the depth.

Solid state reactions of manganese with silica were investigated in high-temperature tests. Reactions of 0.5 to 4.0 moles manganese (Mn) with 1 mole silica (SiO2) at 1,100° C and of 2.0 Mn:SiO2 mole-ratio mixtures at 1,000° to 1,150° C yielded products consisting of a slag phase and a metallic phase. At 1,100° C, the slag phase from reactions of the low Mn:SiO2 mole-ratio mixtures was composed of SiO2 and rhodonite (MnSiO3), and the slag phase from the high Mn:SiO2 mixtures was composed of MnSiOs and tephroite (Mn2SiO4). The metallic phase from the corresponding low Mn:SiO2 mole-ratio reactants consisted of two manganese silicides, Mn5Si3 and Mn3Si; from the high Mn:SiOg mixtures, it was Mn and the manganese silicide (Mn5Si). For the higher mole ratios of MnSiO2 the manganese content in the metallic phase increased, while the manganese and silica contents of the slag phase remained nearly constant. The slags did not contain free or uncombined manganese oxide (MuO). For the 2.5 to 4.0 Mn:SiO2 mole-ratio mixtures reacted at 1,100° C, the maximum quantities of silica reduced and of the manganese in the slag appeared to become asymptotical at about 41 and 48 percent, respectively. A brominating procedure was developed that was highly selective in removing the metallic constituents from the reaction product, leaving the slag phase as residue. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained on prepared silicides Mn5Si, Mn3Si, and MnSi.

The occurrence of dust in mines has always been a source of trouble, but for any years, and virtually up to the beginning of the present century, relatively little of a definite nature was known as to the numerous ill effects of dust in mining operations. Even today, with the west amount of time given and attention paid (for at least 40 years in various, countries) to research and observation en dust in mining, and in spite of the experience with it, much information remains to be obtained, before definite, well-authenticated statements can be made as to numerous features connected with the occurrence of dust in Dines an of its effect upon the health and safety of the worker. One statement that can be made with relatively good assurance of being uncontradicted in that dust is a real menace to the well-being of mine workers, and this includes both health and safety. In addition, dust in and around mines and mining plants is one cause of large financial losses to mine owners and operators. FORMATION OF DUST IN COAL MINES IN THE UNITED STATES One definition of mining is "the processes by which useful materials are obtained from the earth's crust; " since virtually all of the useful materials of or in the earth's crust either are solids or must be reached by penetrating through solids, the materials that are moved in mining must necessarily be broken or disrupted, so that almost every phase of the work of loosening the material and transporting it is likely to produce dust.

In fluctuating airflow, continuous air velocity recording is the most reliable method of air velocity measurement. It allows for fast recognition of changes and the calculation of long-term averages. Also, it enables the mine operator to identify when the airflow has decreased to a point requiring action. Using ultrasonic anemometers provides an accurate option for continuous air velocity monitoring. This paper provides information about the effect of common obstructions in underground mining on air velocity readings. Stationary and moving obstructions are used to represent workers and equipment that would cause discrepancies in measured airflow. Also, it is important to know how large of a sample size is required to ensure reasonable accuracy of results. Statistical analysis is used to evaluate the required sample size. The sampling procedure is further studied by comparing two different sample rates. The results show that obstructions provide noticeable differences in air velocity measurements. Also, movement of obstructions can be recognized from changes in results. Surprisingly small sample sizes provide reliable air velocity information. Standard sample rates are found to be suitable for the underground environment.

"In recent years the gold mining industry has been challenged by declining metal prices as well as having to treat ores that have low grades and are refractory in nature. Many factors must be considered when metallurgical studies are designed to develop process design criteria for these type of ores. These factors are mostly related to the mineralogical and chemical compositions of the ores, the geological setting of the deposit and how the ore/waste will be mined, such as whether openpit or underground, the mine schedule, and the mine fleet type and capacity. The purpose of this paper is to provide an experience-based practical approach to how to select and characterize test samples as well as devise process development metallurgical studies for both oxide and refractory gold ores, and to provide insight into some of the matters that might go wrong during the course of the studies. This paper is intended as both a guide for someone new to the field and also as a reminder for those familiar with the field. IntroductionThe recent decline in ore grades and metal prices have challenged mining companies to reduce capital and operating costs associated with developing new mineral resources. In some cases, metallurgical studies have been sacrificed to prevent cost overruns resulting in inadequate mineralogical, chemical and metallurgical characterization. Consequences have included longer construction schedules, higher initial and working capital, higher operating costs and less than desirable plant performance (Whincup, 2010; Torres, Chaves and Meech, 1999).Mineralogy, geology, mining type and sequence, and the metallurgy of an orebody will determine the process development metallurgical study requirements and eventual process plant design. Therefore, once the geologist has an early indication of a prospective orebody, geologists, metallurgists, mining engineers, and social and environmental responsibility scientists should convene and devise a plan on how to exploit the orebody economically (Lunt, Ritchie and Fleay, 1997).Geologists may find a prospective orebody solely based on grade. However, if the orebody cannot be mined and processed economically, then it is deemed not to be a deposit. An example of this could be a refractory gold deposit, either sulfidic, carbonaceous or siliceous refractory or any combination of those, that may not be mined and processed economically due to reasons such as the physical location of the deposit, depth of the ore lode, or social and environmental concerns. Therefore, an early collaboration between all disciplines must be established.Each orebody may have its own unique mineralogical, geological and chemical characteristics (Guresin et al., 2012). These unique characteristics should be effectively sampled to reduce risks associated with process design and engineering efforts for the process development metallurgical studies. If the sample or samples are not representative of these unique characteristics, then the studies performed will be pointless. The project metallurgist in charge of conducting metallurgical studies should also possess general geology, mineralogy and mine engineering knowledge. Recommended readings are a book on understanding mineral deposits by Misra (2000) and articles on heap leach development by Scheffel (2014a and 2014b)."

By electrostatic separation, course Florida pebble phosphate, too lou-grade to find a ready market, can be upgraded to a satisfactory saleable product. Pebble running from 60 pct bone phosphate of time may be upgraded to 73 to 77 pct BPL depending on the mineralogical. structure of the pebble and the nature of the silica innpurity. High-grade concentrates from Florida pebble phosphate deposits have long been recovered by wet methods. When work was begun in the field, only the coarse pebble (generally +1 mm) was re- covered. In the 1920's a froth flotation process was developed to separate quartz from the finer phosphate fractions, but this method proved unsatisfactory for treating the intermediate fraction (—1 mm +35 mesh). Consequently various other processes were adapted, including agglomerate tabling and spiral separation of reagentized feed. Today the three processes are used—washing and screening for coarse pebble, tabling or spiraling for intermediate sizes, and flotation for —35 mesh material.

This paper presents the results of a study on cellular acclimation of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans to sulfur biooxidation in terms of cells growth and changes in surface properties and morphologies of both cells and sulfur particles. The results showed that A. ferrooxidans cells were grown faster and demonstrated higher concentration in the soluble thiosulfate substrate than in nonsoluble hydrophobic S0 substrate. The results showed that A. ferrooxidans cells acclimated to the sulfur biooxidation by actively expressing some extracellular polymers substance and maybe some outer membrane proteins that modified the surface properties of both sulfur particles and the cells themselves. In addition, the results showed that the A. ferrooxidans cells were able to dynamically adsorb to or desorb from the surface of sulfur particles. The cells aggregating onto the S0 surface enhanced the use of S0 substrate by the bacteria cells. This mode may be one of the most important characteristics for the better growth and propagation of the cells in solid sulfur-containing media.

The vertical travel lead, referred to as "VTL" system, was first developed and patented by C.W. Bermingham in the 1970's. This lead system was developed in response to the fundamental limitations of either a fixed lead or hanging lead system. The fixed lead system is well suited to level job sites with few obstructions and has the advantage of faster positioning of the lead, the hanging lead is very adaptable to different elevations and batter piles but takes much longer to position. Therefore the Vertical Travel Lead was developed to combine the advantages of fixed leads, fast and accurate positioning, with the ability to adjust the height of the lead base up or down. The VTL lead is connected to the boom by a sliding connection which allows the lead to be elevated or lowered below grade. The advantages of the VTL system were recognized by many foundation specialists and they have become the Industry standard in Canada , US Railway Construction , and many parts of the USA.

The appraisal of mineral resources of the Challis National Forest, Idaho, by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, was made so that the mineral resources of the forest could be appropriately considered in land use planning. Information from this study is intended to help the U.S. Forest Service to incorporate mineral resource data into forest plans. The study was done in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, which released a companion report on the geology and mineral potential of the Challis National Forest in 1989. Mineral development activity in and under the Challis National Forest has been of great economic significance to Idaho and the United States. Since the 1960's, mines within the forest have produced mineral commodities worth more than $590 million A current (1989) commodity prices. Identified mineral resources have a gross value of about $2 billion at current prices, including 8 strategic or critical minerals. The U.S. Bureau of Mines study identified and described 723 active and inactive mineral properties within the forest. Mineral properties with identified resources were evaluated to determine their economic significance, and an assessment was made of the feasibility of mineral development. Of the 2,516,191 acres in the Challis National Forest, about 390,000 acres were classified as having mining development interest commercially important mineral production, mainly of molybdenum, gold, and silver from the Challis National Forest is likely for the foreseeable future.

An often-overlooked parameter of flotation processing is the impact of surface chemistry. Flotation processing, being a heterogenous process is largely reliant upon the chemistry occurring at the interfaces between solid-liquid phases. Development of analytical techniques such as Auger electron spectroscopy, X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and low energy electron diffractions (LEEDS) has allowed for a dynamic view characterizing surface composition and structures. The advent of ‘static’ systems, capable of measuring ultra-thin layers on surfaces at low concentrations, was the next step in surface analytical developments. In general, it is the low concentrations and fragmentation patterns which limit the analysis of certain chemical species at plant concentration ranges. At present, analysis of inorganic and organic surface modifiers by time of flight mass spectrometers with a variety of ionization techniques has become a common analytical method to measure chemical species on the outermost surface of mineral particles. By studying the relationship between surface analysis results with metallurgical outcomes, the implications of the presence of surface species can be determined. The presence of flotation activators or depressants can be established using Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometry (LIMS) and Resonant Ionization Mass Spectrometry (RIMS) which are highly versatile surface sensitive analytical techniques. A case study applied to sphalerite flotation in the Neves Corvo Cu-Pb-Zn concentrator and the implication inorganic surface modifiers have is presented. By determining the relative concentrations of Cu, Pb, oxidation products, Ca and other surface species in floated and rejected mineral particles, rationale for improving recovery and selectivity is elucidated. A demonstration project investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of two management interventions, Management Training and Organization Development, for improving productivity and safety in metal/non-metal mines. The management training intervention was conducted at Texasgulf Company's trona mine, using three nearby trona mines as controls. The Organization Development intervention took place in Hecla Mining Company's Lucky Friday mine, using the highly similar Star Mine as control. The two management interventions seemed about equally effective in reducing accidents and injuries, as well as MSHA citations, and the management intervention at the Texasgulf mine also appeared to have led to substantial improvement in mine productivity.

Slope stability at the proposed mine in Rajasthan was analysed in two dimensions using a finite difference code. The properties of the rock material were determined in the laboratory and subsequently modified to approximate those of the in situ rock mass. Geotechnical mapping was undertaken to determine the critical orientation of structural discontinuities. The results of the work indicated that an open pit 148 m in depth would be stable with overall slope angles of 60 degrees
