Esse projeto visou a substituição do sistema de controle instalado por um padrão RUSSULA, sistema esse que controla um laminador de barras e de rolos de 500.000 toneladas/ano na Usina Presidente Vargas da CSN em Volta Redonda, RJ/Brasil. Juntamente com o sistema de controle, RUSSULA forneceu um novo posto de operação para a cabine central, com novas telas de operação, sendo um posto “touch”. Equipado com controladores Siemens S7-400, IHM Wonderware InTouch, acionamentos ABB ACS800 e DCS800, o sistema se apresentava ineficaz, exigindo a otimização do processo, aumento de produtividade, diminuição de paradas, diminuição de perdas metálicas e maior confiabilidade no controle, o último através das ferramentas RUSSULA implementadas no software, como por exemplo detecção automática de sucata, controle de tração, controle de laço, rastreamento do material no laminador, otimização de corte das tesouras e barra fantasma.

In 1944, the 78th congress of the United States enacted Public Law 290, which directed the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Bureau of Mines, to furnish industry with basic information and cost data for the development of a synthetic liquid fuels industry. Recently published information with respect to the cost of synthetic liquid fuels processes indicates a wide variation in estimated results. To clarify the results and inconsistencies for the hydrogenation of coal, the Bureau of Mines has prepared preliminary designs and calculated detailed investment costs from which the operating costs to produce 30,000 barrels per day of liquid products, mainly gasoline, by coal hydrogenation were obtained.

In the past, conventional reflection seismic techniques were not very successful when applied to typical mining exploration: they lacked resolution in the shallow range or were not cost effective. By combining a light earth tamper source, special geophones and field procedures, a stacking process of the returning seismic events using a microprocessor system, and a sophisticated sequence of adapted digital data processing, Mini-Sosie achieves high resolution in the 100-ft to 4000-ft range. Additional advantages result from the very quiet nature of the source and flexibility of the system. Although Mini-Sosie might be used in the refraction mode, or for well velocity logging, it has found its main applications with the reflection technique.

Aços ARBL são utilizados na fabricação de tubos para transporte de gás natural e petróleo e, devido ao ambiente agressivo, rico em H2S, em que são aplicados, devem resistir à fragilização por hidrogênio. No presente trabalho, verificou-se qual a influência do alongamento longitudinal dos grãos de um aço API X65, com baixo Mn, sobre a permeabilidade de hidrogênio. O material foi caracterizado com a utilização dos microscópios óptico e eletrônico de varredura e os ensaios de permeabilidade foram conduzidos com base na norma ASTM G 148-97. A microestrutura do aço era composta por ferrita e perlita, com baixo teor de inclusões arredondadas de Al e Ca e sem bandeamento. Com os resultados obtidos a partir dos ensaios de permeabilidade, calcularam-se os coeficientes de difusão efetiva do hidrogênio nas seções longitudinal e transversal do aço, e o valor do primeiro se mostrou levemente superior ao do segundo. Isto indica que pode haver influência do alongamento longitudinal dos grãos sobre a permeabilidade de hidrogênio.

The recent paper by Bain (1981) contains an unfortunate, and potentially misleading typographic error. On page 9, second paragraph, Bain states that, "some samples of drill core from the (Candlow) Formation ... contain up to 90 ppm gold and 2 000 ppm arsenic". The gold value should read 90 ppb. In fact, in the original version of the paper (Bain, 1980), the gold value quoted was actually 60 ppb.Bain also refers briefly to some geochemical data which is attributed to me, and which I feel require some clarification.In addition, the paper contains some factual errors relating to the occurrence of carbonate and potential host rocks to Carlin-type gold deposits in the Candlow Formation.

I. INTRODUCTION. AT the Seventy-sixth meeting of the Institute, held in New York, N. Y., February, 1899, I presented a, paper on this subject entitled, Coal-Cutting Machinery,' which has become somewhat out of date, in view of the decade's development in this feature of the coal-minim industry. It should be explained that the present paper is limited to the use of mining-machines in bituminous mines. Practically all of the anthracite mined is ?shot from the solid," no undercutting being done. Anthracite-mining is therefore not considered in the statistics or other references. The statistical record as compiled by the United States Geological Survey shows that in 1898, the year preceding the presentation of my former paper, there were 32,413,144 short tons of coal undercut by the use of machines. In 1907 the machine-mined coal-product amounted to 138,547,823 short tons. In sympathy with the general decrease in coal-production during 1908, the output of machine-mined coal decreased to 123,183,334 short tons, but the proportion of machine-mined coal to the total output, nevertheless, showed an increase, from 35.1 per cent in 1907 to 37 per cent in 1908. In 1898 only 19.5 per cent. of the total product was undercut by the use of machines. The number of undercutting-machines in use in the bituminous mines of the United States has increased from 2,622 in 1898 to 11,144 in 1907, and to 11,569 in 1908. The total production of bituminous coal in the United States in 1908 was almost exactly double that of 1898, while the machine- * Published by permission of the Director of the U. S. Ni, Co, Cu and Pt, mattes are common materials that require granulating and milling of the resultant granules for further processing. This route is acceptable if the material is brittle (friable) which is a property associated with the higher sulphur mattes. For lower sulphur levels, where the matte is less amenable to milling, the costs of the milling increases. This paper will compare water granulation with certain dry granulation processes and the downstream processes required for Hydrometallurgy. It will further introduce and expand on atomisation which offers a further safety benefit in the control of the metal flow into the 'wet zone' with the use of a tundish flow control also reducing the conversion from the matte to powder in one fairly straightforward operation.

The electrolytic formation of y hydride in thin foils of Ti-5Al-Z.5Sn alloy and four Ti-A1 binary alloys has been studied by electron microscopy and electron diffraction. Two orientation relationships have been found: THE adsorption of hydrogen by titanium alloys from aqueous solutions has been widely reported. This can occur, for example, in both alkaline' and acidic2 pickling baths, in chemical polishing374 and electro-polishing Solutions,3,4 during cathodic polarization5" and under certain corrosion conditions,7,8 Etching reagents may also produce visible precipitates, sometimes after an aging period.9 During an investigation into the stress corrosion susceptibility of a titanium alloys by thin foil electron microscopy many observations have been made of hydride precipitation which has been deliberately promoted by techniques that are described below. The characteristics of hydride precipitation are reported and the observed crystallographic orientation relationships are discussed with reference to distortion in the titanium lattice created by the presence of the hydride. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE One grade of commercial titanium and five alloys were examined. Their composition and hardness values are shown in Table I. All the materials were in the form of thin sheet, 0.05 to 0.065 cm thick, which had been annealed after cold rolling. Foils suitable for transmission electron microscopy were made in two ways: a) by chemical polishing; and b) by elec-tropolishing. The solution used for chemical polishing was a mixture of 44 pct HF and 73 pct HNO3 in the volumetric ratio 2:3. During this polishing specimens were manually moved up and down in the solution. The reaction was veFy rapid, specimens thinning to foil thickness (2000A) in 5 min. Since chemical polishing solutions tend not to cause hydride contamination if they are kept cool3 no attempt was made to prevent the solution from becoming hot during the thinning operation. Electropolishing was performed at -30° C with a mixture3 composed of 295 cu cm methyl alcohol, 175 cu cm n-butyl alcohol, and 30 cu cm perchloric acid with an applied voltage of 40 v after chemically thinning specimens to approximately 0.017 cm thickness in a cool solution of 44 pct HF, 40 vol H2O2, and water in the volumetric ratio 1:6:3. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 1) Ti-5A1-2.5Sn Alloy. The Ti-5A1-2.5Sn alloy was severely contaminated by hydrogen during the chemical polishing. Foils obtained in this way contained large amounts of the y hydride phase. A typical micrograph is shown in Fig. l. The laths were identified as the hydride phase by selected-area diffraction of a large number of foils examined in a tilting stage that could be turned through 40 deg. Using the lattice spac-ings of the alloy obtained by X-ray diffraction as a standard the a value of the hydride was determined fromo the electron diffraction patterns to be 4.38 to 4.40A. The accuracy of this figure is only about ±2 pct. Further evidence of the identification was obtained by vacuum annealing chemically polished foils of the alloy at 500°C. This resulted in the dissociation of the hydride with the production of dislocations and possibly vacancy loops as shown in Fig. 2. The hydride

Considerable borehole investigation work has been completed at a proposed site at Sellafield in Cumbria, supplemented by seismic surveys, other geophysical sensing and geological mapping. The focussing of investigation on the rock mass itself will be achieved by means of the planned underground rock characterisation facility, giving access to depths of about 800 m in the strong, low-permeability basement rocks of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group. Characterisation work undertaken during the sinking phase and interaction with continuing surface-based exploration and monitoring should permit a firmer assessment of the long-term safety of a repository. This report describes the results of a measurement program to determine the broad spectral characteristics of both differential and common mode noise on phone lines in three coal mines; and, signal attenuation spectral characteristics on the same broad basis over phone line strings with taps/branches. The frequency range used was baseband -1000 Hz for resolution bandwidth ranging from 100 Hz near baseband to 30 KHz near I MHz. The signal attenuation measurements were performed on all three "legs" of taps where possible and applicable. Results were obtained comparing shielded and unshielded phone lines In one mine. The results include an improved electromagnetic noise chart for coal mines showing variations with types of mines, topology, and location of noise sources; also, fundamental high-frequency limit on untreated phone lines in coal mines is identified

In this paper, a computer program that has been developed for determining the capital and operating costs for coal preparation plants is described along with its applications. The logic of the computer program is based upon the results of a survey of existing preparation plants, operators, plant contractors, equipment manufacturers, and consulting firms. This survey provided information on plant performance, order-of-magnitude costs, and costing procedures. Additionally, an extensive cost data file for the major capital equipment in coal preparation plants has been developed. Using the washability data and the computer program outputs, the cleaning costs per million Btu can be calculated. Details about the program and its applications can be found in a report by the authors (Zigmond et al., 1979).

With construction of the first phase of the Automated People Mover (APM) Tunnels nearing completion, this paper will address how knowledge from recent Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) tunnel construction at the airport was used to refine the methodology for the next phase of tunnels currently in design. The benefits include an enhanced understanding of the ground conditions; allowing optimization of excavation sequences and support requirements; a more effective instrumentation and monitoring program; and improved construction details and related contract provisions.

AK6 is a Cretaceous aged kimberlite located in the north-east of Botswana, close to Debswana's Drapa and Letlhakane Mines. It was discovered by Debswana in 1969, but was considered unattractive from an economic perspective. In 2003, Debot Prospecting Pty Ltd ('Debot') re-assessed the area and with the advent of new prospecting technology, particularly large diameter drilling ('LDD') and more detailed ground geophysical surveys found AK6 to be of interest. In 2005, the Boteti joint venture was formed between Debot and African Diamonds plc ('AFD'), which covered a number of Prospecting Licenses, including that which contained AK6.

This progress has paid divi¬dends in increased production and in lower accident-frequency rates. The trend has been toward more efficient use of mechanical and electrical power and abolishment of many of the backbraking tasks formerly required of min¬ers and trammers.ScopeTransportation of iron ore as described in this paper covers (1) movement from the working place to ore raises by scrapers, shaker,conveyors, and belt conveyors, and, loading underground cars from chutes or-by scraping from loading drifts; (2) underground haulage, which includes underground cars trains, locomotives, and tracks; (3) shaft station's and hoisting shafts, which. The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern Québec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed ultrafine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultrafine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulphides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 microns and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3% S, 0.07% Cu and traces of antimony (0.03%). The mineralogical characterization showed the presence of 65% gangue minerals, 23% pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6% arsenopyrite, 2.2% pyrite and 0.08% chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05%) and sphalerite (0.03%). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3-5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20 C 72 hours extracted 97.0% Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7% Au extraction. A 16-h pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-h cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5%. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0%. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2%. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80%. Efficient cyanidation of an ultrafine sulphide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultrafine sulphide concentrates.

Since then, the division has become established in various industries such as ferro-alloys and non-ferrous metals, and in numerous other special applications. During the evolution of this technology, more efficient units with longer lifetimes were developed. Today, especially the potential of DC-based smelters, raises worldwide attention, with some projects having already started to implement this kind of technology. This paper evaluates SMS Siemag?s general viewpoint regarding the potential application of DC smelter technology and possible options for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. SMS Siemag is currently executing a FeCr project in Kazakhstan, where four of the world?s largest closed-type DC smelting furnaces, with a power input of 72 MW, will be installed. These furnaces include the latest technological features of modern DC smelters, which are described in this paper. SMS Siemag has started a long-term research and development project allowing a direct comparison of AC versus DC technology on a large scale, using a recently installed 1 MVA test furnace at the IME at the University of Aachen, in Germany. For open-type ferro-alloy and Si-metal furnaces, SMS Siemag has developed an energy recovery system, which is presented in this paper.

This paper describes an experimental method for the monitoring of diesel-generated exhaust gas pollutants in a dead-ended drift for the purpose of assessing the effect of control approaches. Experiments were conducted to determine the relative merits of these ventilation configurations: no auxiliary ventilation, induction ventilation at the entrance to the drift, and ventilation of the dead-ended drift with positive displacement tubing. The drift used in this experimental work was approximately 105 ft. (32.0 mf long and slightly downsloping, with an average height and width of 8 ft. (2.4 m) and 28 ft. (8.5 m1 , respectively. The data were gathered for assessing these ventilation methods and for gathering data to support a computer model of the dispersion and mixing processes. For this drift, it was found that ventilation with positive displacement tubing provided the best removal of diesel-generated pollutants. Induction ventilation appeared to be the least effective of the three methods examined. A comparison was also made between personal monitoring and area monitoring. Results of this analysis showed that in regions of high concentration gradients, it was not possible to get good agreement between point sampling and personal monitoring. In well-mixed areas, good agreement between the two methods of monitoring was obtained.

The Nam San copper-gold deposit was discovered in 2011 and is a likely blind extension of the Permian age Phu Kham structurally deformed porphyry/skarn copper-gold deposit.The Nam San mineralisation is hosted within a dominantly sericite altered schist unit located to the north of the current Phu Kham open pit operation and is overthrust by an allochthonous barren cover sequence of limestone, granite and sandstone. Reinterpretation of the Phu Kham geology developed the concept of a possible telescoped porphyry copper-gold system at depth. Initial drilling intersected remobilised copper mineralisation in a basal conglomerate, confirming the concept. A reconnaissance vector array induced polarisation (IP) survey identified a deep chargeability anomaly from which a drilling target was developed from 3D inversion modelling of a detailed follow up dipole-pole-dipole anomaly. Drilling of the chargeability anomaly intersected the blind Nam San copper-gold mineralisation beneath the thrusted cover sequence.The key discovery parameters are the result of an integrated exploration program that included reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy, which developed the concept of a deep blind orebody, IP surveys capable of penetrating through the barren cover and a commitment to a deep directional drilling program to test these concepts and targets. With the passing of Dr William Bleloch on 20th June 1991, we lost not only a colleague and a good friend but a man who made a very significant contribution to the industrial development of South Africa. He can rightly be called the father of the ekctrochemical and electro-metallurgical industries in this country, since his ideas and dedicated work were directly responsible for the development of these large industries as we know them today.

In China, the total reserves of vanadium, reported as V2O5, in stone coal is 118 Mt (130 million st). Recovering vanadium from such a large resource is very important to China?s vanadium industry. The technology now being used to recover vanadium from stone coal has the following two problems in the leaching process: a low recovery of vanadium and high acid consumption. To resolve these problems, a new leaching technology is proposed. The effects of factors such as H2SO4 concentration, liquid-solid ratio, temperature and time, and the types and additions of additives were studied. By adding 1.5% (by weight) CaF2 and leaching the roasted residue of stone coal with 5.4% (by weight) sulfuric acid at 90°C for 12 hours at a liquid-solid ratio of 2 mL/g, the leaching degree of vanadium reached 83.10%. This proposed leaching technology gives a feasible alternative for the processing of roasting residue of stone coal and can be applied in the comprehensive utilization of stone coal ores in China.
