Long, high capacity, highly tensioned, cable bolts (strand bolts), stiff enough to be installed with resin like a solid bolt, yet flexible enough to be used in any lengths, have been widely used in Australian coal mines since the early 1990?s. A brief history and update on recent developments of this technology is provided. The first major US trial of this Australian technology, has recently taken place at BHP Billiton?s San Juan longwall coal mine in New Mexico. Thirty-five foot long, high capacity, highly tensioned, post-grouted cable bolts are being used to provide active secondary support of intersections in areas where operator safety and life of mine considerations are paramount, and standing support cannot be installed for reasons of equipment access. The cable bolts are resin anchored into overlying sandstone channels, tensioned, and post-grouted. The installation procedure and support results for these highly tensioned cable bolts are given.

To reduce the use of fossil fuels and increase self-sufficiency in energy, nowadays, there is an increasing interest to produce heat, power and transportation fuels from renewable resources. Solid biomass is one of the most important renewable energy sources for meeting this target. However, fouling, slagging, and corrosion threaten long-term operation availability and costs of biomass power plants. Slags accumulated on the surfaces of superheaters, which decrease thermal efficiency, often constitute a considerable percentage of complex inorganic phases. However, thermodynamic properties of the complex inorganic phases and their combined effect, which will help to deal with the slag related problems during high-temperature biomass combustion processes, are not well known. In the present paper, thermodynamic properties of K-, Ca-, and Na-based inorganic phases and their mixtures under different gas conditions are both critically reviewed and experimentally studied. The obtained results are presented and discussed.

Ensaios de curva R (J vs. ?a – crescimento dúctil de defeitos) e de propagação de trincas por fadiga (da/dN vs. ?K) são balizados por normas como a ASTM E1820, ISO 12135 e E647, as quais exigem dimensões mínimas para as amostras C(T) ou SE(B) a fim de garantir condições SSY e portanto a validade de K e J. Entretanto, tais exigências usualmente conduzem a dimensões expressivas que dificultam a retirada de amostras de chapas finas ou mesmo de muitas estruturas reais. Como alternativa, estudos de Koppenhoefer e Dodds (1998) e mais recentemente de Shin e Lin (2012) indicaram a possibilidade de uso de amostras em miniatura (inclusive Charpy contendo pré-trinca) para determinação de curvas R e da/dN vs. ?K. As grandes questões são a viabilidade de ensaio de amostras pequenas com repetibilidade e a adequada avaliação dos limites de validade das forças motrizes nestas geometrias, a fim de garantir condições de similitude. Como um passo nesta direção, este trabalho investiga o potencial de amostras Charpy pré-trincadas (10x10x70mm) na determinação de curvas R e da/dN vs. ?K. Inicialmente, ensaios de ambos os tipos foram realizados em amostras de um aço estrutural ferrítico empregando uma máquina universal MTS 810. Apesar das dimensões reduzidas dos espécimes, os ensaios se mostraram viáveis e apresentaram boa repetibilidade e estabilidade dos resultados experimentais. Ainda, boas práticas de ensaio puderam ser estabelecidas para suportar os trabalhos futuros com tais geometrias.

East Otago gold deposits are hosted in Otago Schist that is the metamorphosed equivalent of Permian-Triassic Torlesse terrane greywackes. Relatively undeformed Torlesse sequences in Canterbury have <l m - 50 m bedding, with c. 500 m - l km and c. three kilometre scale units, typically either: 1) thick-bedded, massive, sandstones; 2) thin-bedded sandstone-argillite flysch; or 3) siltstone- or argillite-dominated units. Such lithological layering in Otago was intensely folded, deformed, and overprinted by metamorphic fabrics during Jurassic-Cretaceous regional metamorphism. Although primary sedimentary structures can no longer be recognised, a æghostÆ lithological variation is still present in Otago represented by psammitic (sand-derived), interlayered (sandstone-siltstone derived) and pelitic (siltstone-mudstone derived) schist. Lithological æunitsÆ in the schist are typically either 20 100 m or c.1 - 2 km thick, and are oblique to faults and shears hosting gold mineralisation at Macraes, Barewood, Nenthom, and Oturehua. Lithological variations and folds in lithological units are important in the along-strike distribution of gold in these deposits, and in the development of relatively high-grade pods and shoots at l00 m - 1.5 km scales. Ramps, flats and step-overs (known to be locally important for controlling mineralisation) are commonly located at lithological boundaries, presumably by local refraction of faults or shear zones as they propagated through folded stratigraphy. The various lithologies have also responded differently to deformation, causing variations in permeability that affected the penetration of mineralising fluids. Mapping lithological variations in barren host-rocks, either directly+ by fieldwork or indirectly by aerial geophysics, is a key to understanding and predicting the distribution of gold at mine and deposit scales.

Nos últimos anos as siderúrgicas têm investido na melhoria de seus processos e produtos buscando à produção de clean steels, onde menor nível inclusionário é almejado. Neste contexto foi objetivado neste trabalho, em um primeiro momento, realizar uma revisão bibliográfica afim de buscar um modelo que pudesse relacionar a composição química da escória com a capacidade da escória de remover de forma eficiente as inclusões, garantindo assim a limpidez de aços. A partir destes dados, buscou-se, como segundo objetivo, avaliar alguns resultados de escórias industriais e compará-los com o proposto pelo modelo. A viscosidade e molhabilidade foram os parâmetros de maior impacto neste estudo, sendo a viscosidade obtida através da termodinâmica computacional com o FactSage e a molhabilidade estimada a partir do modelo de Nakajima.

"A novel on-line visualization system, previously developed at Syncrude Canada Ltd., has been modified to characterize rising bubbles, particles and particle-bubble aggregates in a flotation process. With this system, the bubble size and rise velocity in a laboratory flotation cell can be determined. The technique allows the loading of solids on bubbles to be visualized, thereby providing an in-depth understanding of sub-processes of flotation. A step-by-step data processing procedure is presented. The applicability of the developed system to mineral flotation and bitumen extraction is discussed. Under batch flotation conditions in a laboratory Denver cell, three main bubble-particle attachment patterns are observed. They are: i) single particles attached to single bubbles, ii) particle aggregates loaded on single bubbles; and iii) a group of particles aggregated with a group of bubbles. The results demonstrate that the on-line visualization system is a powerful tool for understanding and diagnosing flotation processes.INTRODUCTIONAir (Gas) bubbles are an indispensable component in a flotation system. Both industrial practice and theoretical analysis indicate (Yoon, 1993; Diaz-penafiel and Dobby, 1994) that the size and population of bubbles are two important process parameters in modeling flotation. More recent investigations (Finch, et al., 1999; Gorain, et al., 1997) suggest that for a given flotation system, bubble surface area flux, defined as the air liquid interfacial area per unit time and unit cross-sectional area of flotation cell, showed a better correlation with the flotation rate constant. As a result, the bubble surface area flux is now being considered as a key parameter to account for the combined effect of bubble size and population in evaluating the performance of flotation machines and modeling flotation processes. However, the success of using bubble surface area flux in flotation process modeling largely depends on how accurate it can be determined or estimated (Finch, et al., 1999)."

The first part (lH of this work dealt with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformation by creep, as revealed by macroscopical examination. It was shown that when recrystallization commenced, a crystal, termed the primary crystal, started to grow at the edge of the specimen and extended into the body of the specimen along the slip planes. At some stage during the growth of this crystal, other crystals appeared at the boundary of this first crystal and fragments of the parent crystal. From thispoint, recrystallization was accelerated with relatively rapid necking down of the specimen until fracture occurred.All those crystals formed after the primary crystal were given the term secondary crystals. In the present paper is given a detailed account of the orientations of the primary and secondary crystals.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe size of the test pieces and the manner of loading were given in the previous paper (1). X-ray back reflection photographs were taken of the individual primary and secondary crystals and from them were determined the orientations. A crescente demanda por energia elétrica nas aeronaves modernas pode ser constatada pelo aumento da potência elétrica gerada a bordo, como exemplo o Boeing 787 produz 1000kVA, 200V trifásico, 400Hz variável contra 240kVA, 200V trifásico, 400Hz fixo produzido pelo Airbus A330, apesar de possuírem aproximadamente as mesmas dimensões. Devido à necessidade de redução de massa de transformadores, a frequência utilizada na geração de eletricidade na aeronave é de 400Hz o que acaba produzindo um aumento das perdas em núcleos de FeSi destes transformadores, principalmente pelo aumento das correntes parasitas no núcleo. Transformadores elétricos com núcleos de ligas amorfas a base de Fe vêm apresentando redução de até 70% das perdas no núcleo quando operados em 50Hz ou 60Hz. Assim, esse estudo visa discutir as vantagens e desvantagens do uso de transformadores elétricos com núcleos de ligas amorfas a base de Fe em aeronaves. Os resultados mostram que, com o desenvolvimento de novas ligas, tal utilização mostra-se viável devido a uma redução de peso de tais transformadores.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop methods, on a laboratory scale, for recovering tin from Bolivian metallurgical slimes. Petrographic and chemical analyses were made of slime ore fractions from several well-known tin operations. High percentages of the total tin were volatilized as chlorides at temperatures below 600° C. Under optimum conditions reaction rates were relatively rapid, and the chloridizing reaction approached completion. Owing to the low temperatures involved and the high yields of tin, the process was considered to have possibilities for treating Bolivian slimes on a commercial basis. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Appreciation is hereby extended to the Patino Mines and Enterprises, Inc., of Bolivia, for supplying slimed tin ores that were used in the experimental work. The studies previously made on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace have dealt with the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co. at Tooele, Utah,4 and on the smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Smelting Co.5 at Kellogg, Idaho. The International plant may be considered representative of the traditional custom smelter. The lead smelter of the future seemingly will have to treat increasingly richer lead charges. This feature was then stressed in describing the Bunker Hill plant.

A média do tempo tap to tap para refino de uma corrida de ferroníquel era 280 minutos. O objetivo do projeto é alcançar média de 240 minutos. Realizado análise das principais perdas de tempo do processo de refino de ferroníquel, análise dos tempos e métodos do processo de amostragem de ferroníquel e brainstorming com os operadores. A partir destas informações foi realizada revisão na receita de refino de ferroníquel com a utilização de cálcio silício ao invés de alumínio para desoxidar a escória e teste com sensores de silício (sem utilização de CAPEX) e proposto para CAPEX utilização de espectrômetro de emissão atómica/óptica para reduzir tempo de espera por resultados de laboratório. A revisão da receita reduziu o tempo tap to tap de corridas sem sucata para 211 minutos.

Based on these investigations, general conclusions and some recommendations are presented.

During the coming decade, many of the first generation of ‘super-pit’ gold and base metal mining operations in North and Latin America will reach the end of their economic lives. The closure of such pits in a manner which is environmentally sustainable presents a considerable challenge to the minerals industry. Pit closure often results in the partial or total inundation of formerly dewatered mining operations, and the resultant formation of lakes. The development of techniques for predicting, and controlling, the chemistry, groundwater discharge characteristics and long term hydrospheric impact of these lakes has become a critical aspect of pit closure planning. In this sense, the paper point out that Sleeper Mine was the first of a new generation of open pit gold mines developed in Nevada, USA. The closure of the Sleeper pit exemplifies the use of a range of pragmatic approaches to pit flooding, with applicability to mine closure at many other sites throughout the Américas.

Feldspar, a low-alumina, and abundantly available aluminosilicate source, is explored in this study to extract aluminum and potassium values. The sample comprises lamellar layers of microcline and albite with quartz containing 17.4% Al2O3, 9.67% K2O, and 66.3% SiO2. Mechanical (milling) and thermal (alkali and acid baking) activation are investigated, followed by HCl leaching. The milling treatment up to 6 h is inefficient in phase dissociation and results in ~ 40% Al and K dissolution. The alkali thermal treatment yielded 80% Al and 71% K extraction. Direct precipitation of the dissolved Al and Si values yielded alumina purity of ~ 29%, and silica gelation separated SiO2 and improved alumina product (94% purity, 71% recovery). Acid baking yielded 98% pure alumina precipitate; however, Al and K extraction were limited to ~ 45% and 65%, respectively. The microwave-assisted alkali treatment was optimal with 800 W and 10 min processing conditions yielding 80% Al and 71% K recovery with 2.26 kWh/kg alumina of thermal energy consumption. Um sistema de blindagem multicamada consiste de uma camada frontal de cerâmica, uma camada intermediária de fibras sintéticas ou de material compósito, e uma camada posterior de um metal dúctil. Recentemente, há o interesse em substituir as fibras sintéticas por fibras naturais, por suas propriedades adequadas, menor custo e peso. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o desempenho de compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados por fibras naturais de Curauá em blindagens multicamada. Placas com 0, 10, 20 e 30% vol. de fibras integraram a blindagem que sofreu impacto balístico com munição 7.62 mm, e o dano foi avaliado pela indentação característica em plastilina e por uma análise microscópica das superfícies de fratura. Foi mostrado que a blindagem resiste ao impacto balístico, atendendo à norma NIJ-0101.04 para o nível de proteção III. Além disso, as fibras de Curauá são responsáveis por manter a coesão do compósito após o impacto balístico, e o compósito por dissipar parte da energia do projétil por mecanismos como delaminação, trincamento da matriz, fratura e descolamento das fibras.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to evaluate the production of high-purity H3P04 by HCl digestion and solvent extraction. Both batch and bench-scale continuous tests were made. Western phosphate rock concentrates were acidulated with HCI, and the digestion liquors were processed by solvent extraction. Phosphoric acid was extracted with isoamyl alcohol and recovered from the organic extract by contact with an NH4F solution. This solution was fractionally distilled to yield high-purity H3P04. The raffinate from solvent extraction was treated with lime to precipitate CaF2, which was subjected to steam pyrolysis to generate HF. This method was successful in recovering 95 pet of the phosphate and 80 pct of the fluoride contained in the concentrates.

The acceptance of AugerCast piles in Canada has been limited. Many engineers are apprehensive about the quality of the piles produced by this method. However, advances in the sensing instruments and computer technology can now provide satisfactory levels of quality assurance. Post construction tests such as the sonic echo method can give an indication of pile shaft integrity. Computerized monitoring of the pile installation process is an immediate and more positive method of quality assurance. The computer continuously measures and records the parameters which indicate the quality of the pile. If these parameters do not indicate a satisfactory pile, it is replaced before the concrete hardens. Computerized monitoring of the installation process is another tool available to the engineer. The data from this system analyzed with soil borings, site inspections, and possibly sonic tests can provide the engineer with enough information for pile certification.

This paper, describing the milling practices at the Minpro plant of the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, Spruce Pine, N. C., is the first of a series being prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on feldspar milling methods and costs in the various feldspar producing areas in the United States. It describes not only the latest practices in feldspar grinding but includes studies of the cost of producing ground feldspar. These cost studies, obviously of interest to every consumer and purchaser of feldspar and to all feldspar grinders, are also of value to the small operator, who is generally prone to understimate his real costs. It describes the latest practices in feldspar milling and includes detailed costs of grinding. The cost tabulations presented show operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Details of costs are given only to the extent that they are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. A description of the recently installed milling unit for the preparation of granular glasspar by graded crushing, and magnetic separation is of particular interest. It illustrates how highly specialized feldspar milling has become, and to what an extent grinders are going to supply consumers with the products best suited for their particular needs.

"AbstractA commercial method .has been developed for controlling the texture of chrysotile asbestos fibers so that they may possess properties comparable with natural sem1-harsh fibers for use in wet •processes.The physical properties of the soft, silky and slimy fibers are partially altered by a flash-heating process which removes a portion of the molecular water.The heat-treated fibers show an improvement in filterability, an increase in bulk, absorption, and surface area and better electrical properties, such as volume resistivity.IntroductionCHRYSOTILE ASBESTOS fibers are found in nature having varying degrees of texture, referred to as soft, semi-harsh, and harsh. Fibers of each type of texture have inherent characteristics which directly affect their usefulness to industry. Visual differences are apparent under a microscope where it is seen that the soft-textured fibers have a silky, serpentine or wavy appearance, whereas the harsh-textured fibers are coarser and spicular. Semi-harsh fibers, of course, have properties intermediate between these extremes.Fankuchen and Schneider ( l) have shown by the use of low-angle X-ray scattering that the diameter of the harsh type of chrysotile fiber is somewhat greater than tha of the soft variety. Surface area measurements on various chrysotiles of different textures tend to confirm their findings. By nitrogen adsorption methods, it was found that the surface areas of soft types of chrysotile asbestos are approximately 23M2 / g whereas for the harsh types they are as low as 11M2/g."
