To determine the potentialities of nickel as a substitute for cobalt in catalysts for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, RESULTS The maximum oil yields obtained in bench-scale equipment were as follows: Using 100N1:20Mn:100 kaolin:200 diatomaceous earth catalyst, a maximum yield of 133.8 cm.3/m.3 of pure CO+2H2 was obtained from one pass of the feed gas, With a nickel:cobalt mixed catalyst (Ni:Co - 3:7) having the composition 100(Ni+Co):8MgO: 5Th02:200 diatomaceous earth, a maximum of 172.2 cm.3/m.3 of pure C0+2H2 was obtained.

"The long-term viability of seismically active and/or deep mining operations hinges upon the industry's ability to maintain profitability in a climate of increasingly difficult conditions, escalating operating costs and fluctuating metal prices. Within this context, it is prudent to explore mining techniques that could provide means for safer and more profitable extraction of seismically active and/or deep seated deposits that are vital to the long term survival of the industry.The first step was to examine Penetrating Cone Fracture (PCF) and other relevant concepts with the objective of semi-continuous mining in deep underground hard rock mines. This was followed by an assessment of the current conventional drilling and blasting practice. Thirteen blasts were monitored in five different seismically active workings of an operating deep mine. The main concerns during the current drill and blast practice were identified.On the basis of the literature review, three short round blasting techniques were short listed for further review. These techniques were evaluated based upon the available literature and discussions with the persons associated with their applications. Justification, requirements and major challenges for the application of short round blasting have been discussed in this paper. Suggestions for improving the current drilling and blasting practice have also been outlined.INTRODUCTIONRock fragmentation is the key to mineral excavation and production. Increasing working depths, environmental concerns and trends towards continuous mining necessitate the development of new and improved rock breakage methods.The excavation of hard rocks is still dominated by the sequential routine of face preparation, drilling, charging explosives, blasting, ventilating for fume and dust removal, mucking and roof support. Worse still, drilling and mucking require specialized equipment that fills the end of the heading so that no other operation can be performed and the equipment must be removed from the face to protect it from fly rock."

The aim of this paper was to establish if mineral resource scarcity is a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The project objectives were achieved by investigating economically viable, and critical or strategic minerals remaining in South Africa, as well as resource scarcity, as a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The study found that some minerals in South Africa, such as iron ore, lead, manganese, gold, and cobalt have less than 50 years of economically viable mining remaining. At least 18 minerals can be classified indicatively as critical or strategic: aggregates, bauxite, chromite, cobalt, copper, gold, graphite, iron, limestone, lithium, manganese, nickel, phosphorous, platinum group metals, rare earth elements, silver, titanium, and vanadium. The classification was based on the minerals’ economic importance, supply risk, and potential use in the development and manufacturing of emerging technologies. The findings suggest that the scarcity of mineral resources is a critical driver for the country to transition to a circular economy. Other identified drivers include socio-economic factors, climate change commitments, and business objectives. All minerals are non-renewable resources and at risk of depletion, therefore sustainable extraction and use are critical. Priority should be directed at investigating circular economy opportunities and substitutes for commodities at risk of being depleted within the next 50 years. There is an opportunity for South Africa to transition from a minerals export-based model to one that promotes local mineral beneficiation and manufacturing of end products.

En este sentido, el establecimiento de este sistema busca crear una cultura en la organización, a través del seguimiento de cada uno de los índices, permitiendo a la alta gerencia y a los demás niveles ejecutivos de la empresa hacer control de gestión, así como una reducción de los costos operativos en el Área de Mina y mejoras en los resultados de voladura.

The campaign life of an industrial metallurgical vessels strongly relies on the quality and quantity of the refractory lining. An operating furnace or converter refractory lining can be assessed either by thermal modeling or by acousto ultrasonic-echo (AU-E) technique or a combination. AU-E is a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) stress wave propagation technique that has been utilized on a wide variety of smelting vessels for over 12 years with good success. AU-E can determine the thickness of remaining refractory lining, estimate the thickness of build-up or accretion, detect and locate metal penetration and impregnation into the lining, and identify hydrated or cracked areas of refractory. This paper details the AU-E principles, equipment and recent improvements to the data analysis to further improve speed and accuracy. In addition, the paper discusses the AU-E accuracy and limitations through a diverse and vast array of practical examples including a comparison with thermal modeling and physical measurements.

THE MAGNITUDE of the anthracite industry's drainage problem in the Lackawanna River drainage area is realized when it is known that in 1948 the 27 pumping plants in this region pumped over 48 billion gallons of water to the surface from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin of the Northern field. This is almost 92,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of over 300 feet for that year. By comparison, Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest artificial body of water lying wholly in Pennsylvania, contains 71 billion gallons of water in its 24-square-mile area: the volume of water pumped from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin during 1948 was approximately 68 percent of that impounded in Lake Wallenpaupack. The Lackawanna. River and its tributaries drain a troughlike area of 345 square miles. The synclinal axis of this trough lies within the coal measures. All surface drainage into the valley must traverse some part of the coal measures. On the basis of 45.03 inches of rainfall recorded by the Scranton station of the United States Weather Bureau for 1948, the runoff from the Lackawanna River drainage area during that period was 135 billion gallons, approximately three times the volume of water pumped by all mine pumping plants in the Lackawanna. Mining is one of the industries with the highest risk of occupational accidents in Turkey and globally. The most important feature that distinguishes the mining industry from other sectors is the constantly changing working conditions. The risk of accidents is very high, especially in underground mining, and can happen for several reasons. Therefore, it is essential to carry out all necessary measures in coordination with other disciplines to adapt to changing workplace conditions. The dangers that might occur underground must be determined in advance, controlled at their source, or eliminated since it is critical to take the necessary precautions before the accident. Accident prevention will protect miners’ living conditions by contributing to the country’s economy through reduced labour and production losses. In this research, the data from 13,653 accidents reported in the Karadon Hard Coal Enterprise between 2000 and 2011 were analysed and compared using the Life Table and the Kaplan-Meier methods. Accident records were classified and analysed into four categories: environmentalrelated accidents, equipment-related accidents, person-related accidents, and other accidents. Findings in terms of survival time indicate that environment-related and person-related accidents had the highest risk in Karadon, with equipment-related accidents having the lowest. This study established the reliability of using survival analysis methods to investigate occupational accidents in the mining sector. Given that environment-related and person-related accidents occur in a relatively short period, such as 1 year after starting work, it has been recommended that research be done to improve workplace and occupational safety measures and broaden the training given to miners. Additionally, it has been determined that increasing the use of automation and mechanisation in underground coal mines, combined with developing a thorough equipment safety training programme to raise awareness of the danger, can help prevent person-related occupational accidents caused by the interaction between equipment.

From March to May of 1963, the Bureau of Mineral Resources carried out an experimental aeromagnetic survey at Cobar, New South Wales, to field test a proton-precession magnetometer installation in the Cessna aircraft VH-GEO. The Cobar area was chosen as considerable information was already held on the Earth's magnetic field there, which was known to provide a range of anomalous areas that are not excessively disturbed.A procedure for survey flying and methods for processing data were developed during the survey. Contour maps of the aeromagnetic results were produced in the field. The experimental survey was successful in outlining magnetic anomalies in detail.INTRODUCTIONSince 1951 the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (B.M.R.) has carried out an airborne magnetometer exploration programme with DC.3 aircraft carrying fluxgate magnetometer equipment. Recently a proton-precession magnetometer was developed by the Design and Development Group of the B.M.R. for observatory use. One unit modified for airborne use was installed in the Cessna light aircraft, VH-GEO. The Cessna was modified structurally to take the magnetometer, associated bird, and winch gear.The proton-precession magnetometer has many good features.1. As part of an effort to provide basic data on the fundamental scientific and engineering principles of minerals beneficiation, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the flocculation of mineral fines. This paper presents results of studies using crosslinked starches containing carboxyl, diethanolamine, iminodiacetic acid, and xanthate groups to flocculate hematite, goethite, chromite, manganrte, pyrolusite, cuprite, and cassiterite fines. The carboxyl and xanthate derivatives flocculated all minerals except cassiterite; the latter was flocculated by only the diethanolamine derivative. The iminodiacetic acid derivative flocculated hematite, goethite, chromite, cuprite, and pryolusite fines. Zeta potential measurements were made to help define the reaction mechanism responsible for flocculation. These measurements indicate that electrostatic attraction probably is not involved, except possibly in the case of the diethano lamine derivative. The separation of hematite from quartz by selective flocculation with chelating cross- linked starches under two pH conditions and with two dispersing agents is described. Best recoveries and grades were found when either the carboxyl or xanthate derivatives was added at the natural pH of the pulp in the absence of a dupersing agent.

In 1984 and 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed a mineral survey of the South Jackson Mountains Wilderness Study Area covering 60,211 acres of mountainous terrain of Humboldt County in northwestern Nevada. Approximately 550 lode claims have been located within or adjacent to the study area from 1900 to the present. Total recorded production for the area is 28.19 ounces gold, 1,105 ounces silver, 959 pounds copper, 6,016 pounds lead, and 12,446 pounds zinc; an additional two carloads from one mine contained an unknown amount of metal. In early 1986, there were eight active properties with a total of 126 claims. Wescord Resources and Long Lac Exploration (Texas) Inc. are involved in a joint exploration of the Jackson Mountains for volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Development at the Claudia mine continues in 1986. Results of the survey indicate that there are no identified mineral resources or reserves within or adjacent to the study area. Twenty-two properties have mineral occurrences containing gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron, antimony, vanadium, and cobalt, with silver, copper, and iron being the most abundant.

Nos últimos anos a indústria siderúrgica no Brasil vem sofrendo um processo lento e cruel de encolhimento de sua participação no PIB, em decorrência de diversos fatores políticos e econômicos. Apesar do grande esforço por parte das empresas, a capacidade de produção de aço pouco cresceu neste período, permitindo que as despesas cresçam mais rápido do que as receitas. Esses fatores têm mostrado aos profissionais do setor que a mudança do cenário só ocorrerá ao se produzir com o máximo de eficiência. O objetivo deste trabalho é demonstrar que a lubrificação tem grande participação no aumento da produtividade e redução de custos da manutenção. Em suma, será apresentado um estudo sobre como a lubrificação correta influencia no aumento da produtividade das siderúrgicas. Com base nos resultados dos testes realizados em duas grandes empresas do setor, este trabalho demonstra o aumento significativo de performance no Mandril da bobinadeira e mancais dos convertedores, após estudo detalhado da lubrificação.

Coal refuse slurry impoundments are dams constructed of coarse coal refuse to impound fine refuse (slurry) and water (25-30% solids). Both products are waste from coal preparation plants. A number of these structures in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky were investigated to determine embankment stability. During the investigation a variety of embankment designs were encountered. The investigation determined the soil and geological characteristics of the embankments and the sites. This was accomplished by a test drilling and monitor installation (observation wells and piezometers) program, geologic study, and large scale mapping which allowed sub-surface profiles of the embankments to be constructed. The laboratory testing program concentrated on textural classification of the coal refuse, permeability and determining strength parameters to be utilized in the stability analyses. For the stability analyses, the Modified Fellinius Slip Circle, Simplified Bishop Slip Circle and Analysis for Translational Failure -were utilized. In all stability analyses hydrostatic pressure and earthquake were considered. This investigation indicated that 62% of the embankments analyzed are in a stable condition. The coal seam mined, the type of roof rock, and the gradation of the refuse influence the degree of compaction obtainable and the permeability of refuse. The shear strength of coal refuse appears to be controlled by its composition, moisture content, degree of compaction, amount and grain size of fines present. This investigation demonstrated these em¬bankments should not be treated as pure state-of-the-art dams; consideration must be given to the particular properties of coal refuse and the total refuse disposal system. Refuse dim slurry impoundments generally lack the site se- lection phase that is standard practice with siting most other types of dams.

Methylene blue dye adsorbs on chalcopyrite concentrates slurried in aqueous solution. Saturation adsorption can be achieved within about 24 hours for dye equilibrium concentrations greater than about 10-5 M. The dsorption coverage is obtained from a measurement of the' colour change of the solution. Comparison with BET measurement of the concentrate surface area shows that 2.4 ± 0.1 µmol of methylene blue are adsorbed per square metre of surface accessible to the dye cation. The procedure described can be used as a single-point measurement and values for the surface area can be otained to within about 10 per cent with inexpensive instrumentation.

O processo de pelotização consiste na aglomeração e posterior tratamento térmico das pelotas, ajustando as propriedades químicas e mecânicas para o transporte ao reator siderúrgico. A otimização e aperfeiçoamento do processo no forno pode ser realizado experimentalmente utilizando um pot grate. Trata-se de um equipamento no qual uma carga de pelotas cruas é submetida a condições similares às encontradas no processo industrial. Contudo, um projeto de experimentos em um pot grate pode levar semanas. Além disso, alguns parâmetros como: taxas das reações e balanço de energia são difíceis de serem monitorados. Tendo em vista isso, o presente trabalho buscou desenvolver um software de simulação para avaliar o comportamento das pelotas em um pot grate de maneira rápida e prática. Os resultados mostram uma interface amigável para a avaliação da temperatura de pelota, umidade da água, queima do carbono e balanço de energia. Os modelos implementados foram comparados e validados com trabalhos publicados na literatura. O modelo também serve como uma ferramenta de Projetos e Experimentos no Pot, uma vez que permite testes mais rápidos e de custo mais baixo.

O processo de coqueificação em uma Coqueria do tipo Heat Recovery é baseado na queima da matéria volátil presente no carvão, principal combustível para aquecimento dos fornos. A Combustão dos gases tem que ocorre dentro da câmara primaria (interior do forno) e na câmara secundaria (Sole Flue). Devido a algumas interferências no processo de coqueificação não ocorre a queima completa dos gases no forno e com isso a combustão terciária ocorre nos coletores de gases (equipamento destinado apenas para transporte dos gases de combustão). Com a queima dos gases nos coletores temos o aumento de temperatura no interior do duto e como a estrutura refratária não foi projetada para suportar esse limite máximo de temperatura acontece a contração e posteriormente colapso do refratário causando perdas em todo o processo. Os principais benefícios após a aplicação dessa técnica é a redução no tempo de reparo, aumento do rendimento de aplicação da massa refratária e prolongamento na vida útil desse equipamento.

Os acidentes de trabalho estão cada vez mais presentes em indústrias de vários segmentos, inclusive no setor automotivo. Devido ao trabalho no chão de fábrica deste setor utilizar interferência humana em alguns processos e operações, onde o trabalhador compartilha o ambiente produtivo com máquinas automatizadas. Estas máquinas podem causar graves lesões temporárias ou permanentes no trabalhador, podendo chegar até a morte. Neste cenário, este trabalho apresenta um estudo da implantação da pirâmide de Heinrich como forma de informar e prevenir acidentes na indústria automotiva. É detalhado o processo de implantação da pirâmide na linha de produção. Esta implantação contribui na prevenção de acidentes, gera alertas de possíveis riscos, comportamentos inseguros e incidentes. Os resultados desta implementação acabam aumentando a segurança no ambiente de trabalho, reduz custo com acidentes dentro da indústria, que permite investir cada vez mais em métodos para prevenir e gerar um ambiente de trabalho livre de acidentes no setor automotivo.

The potential of uirought tungsten- and tantaluw-rich alloys of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb system was investigated for high-strength structural applications above 2500° F. Appreciable strengthening of tung-sten and tantalum—essentially attributable to solid-solzction effects—was obtained with binary, ternary, and quaternary alloys. Tensile strengths as high as 67,000 psi were achieved at 3000 OF. ThE quest for wrought structural materials which possess good strength properties at temperatures above 2000°F has led to a considerable research effort during the past decade. In addition to exploring the potential of various high-melting-point refractory metals (such as molybdenum, columbium, tantalum, and tungsten) for very high-temperature structural applications, alloy-development programs have been undertaken to achieve greater strengths than could be achieved with unalloyed refractory metals. The methods of strengthening refractory metal alloys have included both solid-solution and dispersion strengthening. General relationships among the relevant properties (melting point, recrystallization temperature, and high-temperature strength) of refractory metals indicate that the highest strengths at temperatures of 2500°F or higher would be obtained with tungsten-or tantalum-base alloys. Therefore, the present investigation was undertaken to determine the high-temperature strength potential of solid-solution strengthened alloys based on the binary system W-Ta; to effect further strengthening, minor additions of molybdenum and columbium (at the 6 and 12 pct levels) were made. The portion of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb quaternary alloy system of interest is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The component metals—W, Ta, Mo, and Cb—have a bcc structure at all temperatures, and their binary systems are mutually completely soluble.' Complete solid solubility in the W-Ta-Mo and W-Ta-Cb alloy systems has been demonstrated,' and, therefore, it was expected that the quarternary alloys of the system would also exhibit complete solid solubility at all temperatures. In the virtual absence of contamination by interstitial elements, all the alloys would be truly solid-solution strengthened. Twenty specific compositions of this investigation included binary, ternary, and quaternary alloys of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb system as well as unalloyed tungsten and tantalum. The compositions are shown in Table I. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Consumable-electrode vacuum-arc melting with ac power was used to produce small laboratory-sized, cylindrically shaped ingots (1-1/4 in. in diameter and 2 to 3-1/2 in. long) of the twenty compositions. A furnace was specially constructed to melt as many as four electrode rods simultaneously into molds lined with tungsten or tantalum sheet. High-purity rods of tungsten, tantalum, molybdenum, and columbium were used for consumable electrodes; the diameter of each rod was determined by the desired weight percentage of the component metal in a given alloy. "The Sturgeon Lake deposit, a partly eroded lens of massive sulphides with an underlying sulphide stringer zone, is one of five orebodies that occur in the Sturgeon Lake area of northwestern Ontario within volcaniclastic rocks of the Archean Wabigoon Subprovince in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield.The Sturgeon Lake Cu-Zn-Pb-A g-Au deposit was discovered in October 1970 as a result of an I.P. survey. Production from this open-pit mine began in March 1974 and continued until the ore was exhausted in March 1980.The Sturgeon Lake property is underlain by basaltic volcanics, minor amounts of mafic lapilli tuff and rhyolite volcaniclastics. A quartz crystal-bearing rhyolite occurs at the top of the felsic volcaniclastics and is ""capped"" by the Sturgeon Lake massive sulphide deposit. The felsic volcanics have been intruded by a crudely layered sill-like, carbonatized mafic intrusion. Recent work suggests that the felsic rocks that underlie the Sturgeon Lake deposit are lateral equivalents of those in the vicinity of the Mattabi Mine and are not correlative with the dacitic volcaniclastics that underlie the Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits. Hydrothermal processes that resulted in the formation of the Sturgeon Lake orebody have resulted in a depletion of Na2O, CaO and FeO and an increase in MgO, K2O, copper and zinc. In the vicinity of the sulphide stringer zone, the rhyolites are ""bleached"" due to silicification and sericitization. The rocks lying immediately below the massive sulphides are locally strongly chloritic.The Sturgeon Lake deposit may have formed on a top ographic high which prevented mafic flows and dacitic volcaniclastics that underlie the Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits from inundating the Sturgeon Lake fumarolic vent from the west. Continued or resurgent activity from the Sturgeon Lake fumarole may have resulted in the formation of the Lyon Lake and Creek Zones as more ""distal "" deposits in topographic lows. The Sturgeon Lake, Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits were subsequently overlain by mafic tuffs and flows."

A unidade do Grupo SIMEC em Pindamonhangaba tem capacidade de produção de 560 mil toneladas/ano de produtos destinados à construção civil. Para abastecer a planta, é utilizada água de poço com pH, condutividade e alcalinidade altas, além de restrições quanto à disponibilidade. Isto gera desafios para o seu uso, e para a água de reposição do sistema de resfriamento dos moldes a água passa por um sistema de osmose reversa. No primeiro semestre de 2016, houve contaminação da água de molde, com a formação de uma incrustação de coloração branca, de aspecto oleoso e diferente das incrustações normalmente encontradas. Este fenômeno reduziu significativamente a vida dos moldes, o que levou à necessidade de paradas constantes para a troca e aumento significativos dos custos. Foi montado um grupo de trabalho de todas as áreas envolvidas, operação, manutenção e condicionamento químico para descobrir as causas e corrigir o problema. Este trabalho mostra as causas, as ações tomadas e os resultados obtidos.
