"This study presents an approach to establishing relationships between metallurgical performance and the characteristics of the bubble population (gas dispersion) inside flotation cells. Bubble size Db, superficial gas velocity Jg, and bubble surface area flux Sb (Sb = 6Jg/Db) measurements were obtained along with metallurgical samples in full-size equipment processing different ore types. The gas dispersion was manipulated by changing the operating conditions of the cells (gas flowrate and frother type) and the metallurgical performance (grade-recovery) was determined. In two cases, the Sb had a strong relationship with grade and recovery, hence, Sb could be used as practical operating parameter. In another case, Sb did not correlate with recovery. The reasons were attributed to creating small bubbles using frothers with desired anti-coalescence properties. This illustrated that bubble size was the key parameter for metallurgy rather than Sb.INTRODUCTIONUnravelling the mechanisms that govern the relationships between metallurgical performance and the characteristics of the bubble population (gas dispersion) inside a flotation cell remains a major challenge. Information on this subject is scarce in the literature, particularly, plant-scale data. The report of Jameson and Allum (1984) appears to be the first gas dispersion study conducted in industrial (mechanical) cells. To introduce concepts, some aspects of their work are reviewed here.The prime motivation of that study was to establish whether any particular cell design (among 44 cells surveyed) could produce very small bubbles (< 0.1 mm), which laboratory research suggested would increase the recovery of fine particles. Although one of the outcomes was that the (examined) cells did not seem to produce such small bubbles (Sauter mean1 D32 ˜ 0.9 mm), the analysis highlighted the importance of including other factors. Jameson and Allum indicated that, besides bubble size (Db), other characteristics of the bubble dispersion should be considered, namely: gas holdup ?g – the fraction of cell volume occupied by bubbles, superficial gas velocity Jg – is the gas flowrate divided by the cross-sectional area of the cell and, bubble surface area flux Sb – the rate of production of (new) bubble surface area (m2/s) per m2 of cell cross-sectional area. It should be noted that, whereas Jg, ?g and Db can be measured directly, the Sb is derived: Sb = 6Jg/Db, where Db is usually substituted by the Sauter mean diameter (D32)."

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo indicar a relação entre Manganês (Mn) e Enxofre(S) mais adequada para a não ocorrência deste fenômeno, e explicar a influência dessa relação nas propriedades dos aços C-Mn. Estudou-se um aço C-Mn com a relação Mn/S 50% menor do que a relação visada na Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional(CSN).

This paper shows the usefulness of geostatistical conditional simulation combined with the quantification of sampling errors obtained from the analyses of fundamental errors ? validated from duplicate data ? to assess the relevance of the quality and quantity of the information, for short-term mine planning purposes. Traditional blast-hole drilling equipment has been designed for efficient drilling, but not for obtaining high-quality samples. Furthermore, blast-hole sampling interferes with production, and thus usually produces poor-quality results. These results are the basis of short-term plans, where the grades of selective mining units are estimated and used for distinguishing between ore and waste. Under these conditions, misclassification (ore blocks sent to the waste dump and waste blocks processed at the plant) is inevitable, leading to significant hidden losses that can amount to millions of dollars per annum. Reverse circulation drilling with the latest automated sampling technology improves significantly the quality of the information used for short-term planning, and thus reduces misclassification, improving the financial returns of the operation. In this paper, we present the general methodology for assessing the effect of poor blast-hole sampling, as compared to advanced reverse circulation drilling grids at several spacings, in order to arrive at the most appropriate grid for short-term planning. This plan can be prepared well in advance using several additional variables that are usually not available when the plan is based on blast-hole samples. Furthermore, blending options can be analysed in order to optimize plant recovery, minimize the use of sulphuric acid, etc. Three case studies are presented, namely a typical porphyry copper deposit, an exotic oxide copper deposit, and a complex gold deposit, where mineralization is controlled by structures and lithology. This paper shows that in all cases, advanced reverse circulation drilling grids provide good-quality information that, coupled with the use of geostatistics for short-term mine planning, significantly improve the financial returns of the operation.

The extractive industries addition to the International Valuation Standards (IVS) is scheduled for publication in the next edition of the IVS book in January 2005. This will provide guidance for valuation of minerals and petroleum industry assets of all types for all appraisal uses. It will provide asset valuation support to the International Financial Reporting Standards for the stock markets of the world, and a global umbrella standard which can be supplemented for local needs by institutes and regulators. This paper discusses implementation of the IVS within the minerals industry and important issues that the industry should confront.

In this research assisted leaching of chalcopyrite using sodium peroxodisulfate was studied. Electrochemical techniques such as Tafel analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to investigate the surface reactions of a chalcopyrite electrode in the presence and absence of Na2S2O8. According to the results, addition of sodium peroxodisulfate increases the current exchange of the corrosion process and prevents the formation of a passive layer on the surface of the electrode. EIS tests show the trans-passive dissolution of the passive layer on the chalcopyrite electrode in presence of Na2S2O8. Equivalent electrochemical circuits were modeled for Na2S2O8-free and -containing solutions and the model parameters were compared to determine the effect of S2O8 2− on chalcopyrite dissolution. Copper dissolution from pure chalcopyrite mineral and chalcopyrite concentrate was carried out using 15 g/L sulfuric acid solution with and without Na2S2O8. Simultaneous presence of 10 g/L ferric ion and 40 g/L peroxodisulfate salt results in about 40 and 18% of Cu extraction from chalcopyrite concentrate and pure chalcopyrite mineral, after 96 h, respectively.

Os materiais cerâmicos são essenciais para o desenvolvimento da humanidade. O homem os utiliza para os mais variados fins, desde a confecção de utensílios domésticos até a produção de peças de alto desempenho tecnológico. Neste sentido, são extremamente necessárias à produção de pesquisas científicas para prospectar novos materiais para a indústria cerâmica. As argilas são consideradas o principal componente para fabricação de massas cerâmicas. Para produção de peças de cerâmica branca, revestimentos e outras categorias cerâmicas onde a coloração clara é prioridade, usam-se argilas cauliníticas. Todavia, esse tipo de argila possui pouca ocorrência na esfera terrestre, em comparação com outros tipos, tais como as argilas de coloração vermelha. Por tal motivo, encontrar novas jazidas de argila caulinítica para abastecer à indústria ceramista é extremamente imprescindível. Nesse sentido, objetiva-se com esse trabalho caracterizar uma argila caulinítica proveniente de uma jazida localizada no município de São Gonçalo do Amarante, região metropolitana de Natal-RN. O referido trabalho configura-se como a primeira parte de uma caracterização do material estudado. Sendo reservado para esse artigo os ensaios físicoquímicos e na segunda parte os ensaios tecnológicos. A caracterização fisioquímica foi realizada através das seguintes análises: DRX, FRX, Análise Granulométrica (AG), Dilatometria e ATG/DTG. Os resultados obtidos demostram a viabilidade técnica da utilização do material para fabricação de produtos cerâmicos, tais como: telhas, lajotas, revestimentos e outros materiais cerâmicos.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a monitoring field study to optimize the rib control plan in a room-and-pillar coal mine. The study mine is located in the Central Appalachia coal basin. Two monitoring sites were selected at different sections in the study mine. The selected sites have different overburden depths and geologies. The instrumentation plans at study sites include borehole pressure cells installed at various depths in studied pillars, rib and roof extensometers and load cells mounted on number of the rib bolts. The instrumentation results and observed geology for one of the study sites showed great potential for optimizing the rib bolt plan at that section of the mine. Therefore, a rib support optimization study was followed using numerical modeling technique. A calibrated threedimensional model was developed using the instrumentation results of the optimization section. The calibrated model was used to determine the optimum rib support for expected overburden depths and rib heights. Baseline rib bolt patterns were assumed for the optimization study. Additional rib bolts, above and beyond the baseline bolting parameters, were outlined and identified as solutions to contain the rib fracturing identified by the modeling results.

O conversor AOD-L é de uso exclusivo para a produção de aços inoxidáveis na Aperam South America. Entre janeiro a julho de 2018, o consumo de FeSi estava acima do orçado, acarretando em perda de gestão para a Aciaria. O aço inoxidável AISI 304 representa 50% da produção da Aciaria na rota duplex (sem uso do VOD), portanto, esse projeto teve como objetivo a redução do consumo da liga de FeSi no AOD-L para o aço AISI 304. Essa redução foi possível através da utilização da metodologia Lean Six Sigma na qual a causa raiz foi identificada e as ações implementadas o que permitiu uma maior estabilidade operacional, além de aumentar a competitividade da Aperam South America frente aos demais produtores mundiais.

In order to provide an initial approach to the deposits of oil shale, nahcolite, and dawsonite in the central area of the Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado, the U.S.B.M. and associated contractor personnel drilled and cased a 96-inch ID shaft to a depth of 2,371 feet. The shaft was constructed using "big hole" drilling techniques and succeeded in giving access to previously inaccessible deposits of the above minerals. This report documents the construction from its beginning in January 1977 to its completion in January 1978. Procedures used and problems encountered are discussed in derail.

Preliminary to an experimental study of selected physical properties of helium and related gases) the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center conducted a data-gathering literature survey. This report combines the results of the 1961-63 literature search into a usable format. The data accumulated on the physical properties are presented in tables and graphs. The data in the tables were chosen for exact representation and comparison of specific values. An attempt was made to select the most reliable and consistent value available for a given property without extensively analyzing each source reference. The methods of evaluation are discussed later. The graphs show trends and anomalies which may be obscure in tabular form. It was the purpose of this contract to conduct research in several different areas of instrumentation used to determine the quantity of respirable dust in the mining atmosphere. One area of research was in evaluation of instruments including several respirable dust monitors, several types of photometers, and a QCM cascade impactor. An instrument evaluation chamber was developed to aid in evaluating the instruments in a dust atmosphere. Another area of research was investigations into new instrumentation concepts, such as a virtual impactor/photometer instrument, a new optical device which can be used as either an optical particle counter or photometer, a new personal respirable sampler, which employs an impactor instead of a cyclone as a preclassifier, and the development of a new cascade impactor, which deposits the particles uniformly on the impaction plate. Another area of research included the use of many of these instruments in two field studies, including a silica sand plant and a tungsten mine.

The paper highlights the experimental investigations to characterize texture and plastic strain ratio r-Bar in auto grade steel sheets by ultrasonic measurements, whereas attempts were made to characterize interlamellar spacings in pearlite, tensile stresses and torsional properties in prestressed concrete wires by eddy current measurements. Good correlations were obtained between the testing parameters (such as ultrasonic attenuation and velocity in case of steel sheets as well as eddy current out put voltage and phase angle in case of steel wires) and the materials properties (such as texture, plastic strain ratio r-Bar, interlamellar spacings in pearlite, tensile stresses and torsional properties). 15 MHz normal direct contact and 20 MHz delay line normal shear wave probes were used for ultrasonic measurements. Eddy current measurements were done using an absolute coil probe with variable frequency selection. The experimental results show the possibility of nondestructive on line measurement of the above microstructures and properties.

Axial pile performance can be rationally evaluated within an elastic continuum framework using field results from seismic piezocone tests (SCPTu). Adopting a versatile Randolph-type elastic pile model, the approach can be applied to either traditional top down loading using an anchored reaction beam or the newer Osterberg cell that simultaneously pushes the base and shaft in opposite directions. The axial load distribution within the shaft is also evaluated. For site-specific data at a given site, the SCPTu is an optimal means for collection of subsurface information because it combines penetrometer readings and downhole geophysics in one sounding. The results obtained are at opposite ends of the stress-strain-strength curves, specifically the peak strength for capacity interpretations and the small-strain stiffness (Emax) for evaluating the initial deformations. Axial pile capacity can be analyzed using both direct and indirect CPT methods. As such, the approach allows for a complete representation of the axial load-displacement-capacity curve for pile response. Case studies are presented for deep foundations situated in stiff clays at two national geotechnical test sites located in Houston and College Station, Texas, using top down loading, as well as a third case study of a drilled shaft in clay till loaded by O-cell in Alberta.

"An atmospheric process for the synthesis of scorodite(DMSP®)has beendeveloped,in which ferrous ions were oxidized by oxygen gas in the presence of pentavalent arsenic ions. Under optimum conditions, the synthesized scorodite (FeAsO4?2H2O) was well crystallizedand the crystals were faceted; the particle sizes were as large as 15 to 20 µm. In thisstudy, iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate (FeSO4·7H2O), arsenic (V) acid (60mass%H3AsO4) solution, and distilled water were used to prepare the original experimental solution (700 ml), in which the contents of Fe(II) and As(V) were 55.9 g/L and 50.0 g/L, respectively. The effects of various synthesis conditions, such as the type of oxidizing gas (oxygen or air), gas injectionrate, temperature, and the initial pH of the solution, on the size and shape of the scorodite particles wereinvestigated. From the experimental results, the changes in the shape of the scorodite particles wereclarified for each synthesis condition.INTRODUCTIONDOWA has developed a processfor synthesizing well-crystallized scorodite (FeAsO4•2H2O). The subject area known as upper Dry Valley is located 15 miles due east of Soda Springs in Sections 14 and 23, Township 9 South, Range 44 East, Caribou County, Idaho. The railroad extending from Soda Springs to its terminus at El Paso&apos;s Maybe Canyon mine is 8z miles to the north in lower Dry Valley. Initial data derived from trench work in 1962 revealed a variety of econom¬ically significant alterations of the phosphatic beds related to the rather unique geomorphic development in the northern part of phosphate lease 1-012989. It was apparent that such conditions, while valid for near-surface beds in a strike direction, would be misleading if projected to the proposed depth limits of strip mining. Consequently, a subsurface mapping program was initiated in 1963 to determine: (1) the depth and horizontal extent of weathering and related phe¬nomena, (2) the depth, thickness, and quality of ore beds and intervening strata, and (3) structural geology as a guide for mining procedures. Successful use of a scintillometer in 1956 to detect the subcrop position of phosphate beds in the Smokey Canyon area of southeastern Idaho led to the conclusion that gamma radiation surveys of drill holes could be a useful aid in subsurface mapping. The objectives of this paper are: (1) briefly to describe geologic features characteristic of the phosphate lease area and (2) to demonstrate the practical application and theory behind gamma radiation logging as an effective tool in the economic evaluation of a phosphate lease.
