This paper presents the system, the strength of column, the design concept, and the applications with four case histories from the past project as the general aspect of Geo-Column (trade mark of single soil-cement column by SCC Technology, Inc.). In the system, it shows the installation process and drilling/mixing tool with the mixing process. In the design concept, it shows how to design Geo-Column against the vertical and horizontal load. Finally, it shows the applications with four case histories, (1) building mat foundation, (2) isolated foundation on the pedestrian bridge, (3) bridge spread footing and slope erosion control wall in the channel, and (4) cut-off wall and shoring wall in the underpass roadway to the railroad.

The mining industry in Colorado faces the same problems the industry faces throughout the United States and the world — record low commodity prices and increasing regulatory and environmental restrictions that seemed designed to curtail mining activities. Despite those obstacles, the mining industry in Colorado still contributes about $8 billion annually to the state’s economy in the form of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and associated service businesses and jobs. So the 300 attendees at the102nd National Western Mining Conference felt reason-ably positive about the industry in their state. The meeting is the Colorado Mining Association’s annual conference and was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in November. The theme was “Mining in the New Millennium — Achievement + Innovation = Survival.” Experts from Colorado’s mining industry and abroad discussed the challenges faced by the mining industry as it enters the new millennium. They offered insights into how the industry will operate during the early years of the 21st century and how it will survive low prices and increased regulatory restrictions.

A thermodynamic model of KIVCET lead smelting process has been developed. The model has the capability to predict the distribution behaviors of Pb, Zn, Fe, S, O, As, and heat balance in KIVCET direct lead smelting furnace. The compositions of lead bullion, matte, slag and gaseous phases, and heat balance are calculated. The effect of the ratio between oxygen and feed on the chemistry of the smelt and heat balance of the coke checker has been simulated and discussed. The thermodynamic model also helps to understand the tapping issue of the lead bullion. In this paper, some applications of this model in the industry have been presented.

The Modified Zincex® Process, developed by Técnicas Reunidas, is highly flexible dealing with a wide range of pregnant leach solutions. No matter if those solutions are produced from primary or secondary raw materials, and/or are based on conventional leaching, pressure leaching, heap leaching or bio leaching the result is always high-purity zinc product. The zinc solvent extraction unit within the process is a very effective barrier for impurities and a buffer for the composition of the pregnant liquor. This unit achieves an extremely pure aqueous extract that can be converted into different final products. All of them are characterized by fulfilling the highest purity standards. Also, there is the possibility to adapt the global process to a wide range of pregnant liquor compositions and various production capacities up to a zinc production limit over 150 000 t/a with a single solvent extraction plant.

SO many variations of lead-zinc ores occur in nature that it is impossible to state any rules that will apply to the concentration of ores of this type. Some have lead and zinc in approximately equal amounts; others may have pre- dominant amounts of one or the other metal. There are gradations from all sulfide to completely oxidized minerals. Some such ores carry little pyrite, others contain much more pyrite than they do lead and zinc combined. The behavior of ores in flotation is largely a function of their lead-zinc ratios. their content of pyrite or pyrhotite, the nature of existing soluble salt conditions, the character of the gangue constituents: and the speed with which the minerals float. For the purposes of this paper only those lead-zinc ores handled commonly in present-day flotation practice will be considered. These are practically all-sulfide ores with relatively minor degrees of sulphatization or oxidation.

The expansion of city street laving which characterized the ten years ended December 31, 1929, according to a survey of 201 representative cities, made by the bureau of Mines, reached it climax in 1927, with decreases reported for 1928 and 1929. The upward trend, followed by a decline, was general in cities of all sizes included in this study, but was most pronounced in cities of 40,000 to 100,600 inhabitant and in the Northeastern, Southeastern, and Southwestern States. In the North-Central States the trend of paving; was downward from 1925 to 1929; in the Pacific, and Rocky Mountain States it was generally upward. Over the nation as a whole, bituminous types of paving continued to lead, furnishing two-thirds of the total street pavement laid in the 201 cities from 1925 to 1929. The actual yardage of bituminous pavement laid in these cities, however, was 3.8 per cent less in 1923-than in 1925, and the ratio of bituminous pavement to the total pavement t dropped from 70.4 per cent in 1925 to 62.1 per cent in 1928, rising to 65.1 per cent in 1929. The area paved with Portland-cement concrete amounted to only one-fourth of the total, pavement laid in these cities from 1925. to 1923., but the yardage of Portland-cement pavement increased by half during the period, and its share in the total pavement grew from 19.3 per cent in 1925 to 30.0 per cent in 1928, declining to 29.5 per cent in 1929. Brick, block, and stone pavements, which constituted the remaining one-twelfth of the total pavement laid in the 201 cities, decreased one-third in yardage, and declined in relative importance from 10.3 per cent in 1925 to 6.6 per cent in 1929.

Small replacements of C12-trithiocarbonate (C12-TTC) for dithiocarbonate (DTC)/dithiophosphate (DTP) in a reagent suite for the flotation of platinum group metals (PGM) have significantly improved the rejection of gangue. Coupled to this is an improvement in kinetics, grade and recovery of PGMs. In a pilot-plant trial, after a 5 mole per cent replacement of the current DTC/DTP collector combination by C12-TTC, large opaque bubbles were replaced by small clear ones. In addition, a similar flotation response was realized with one-third of the current depressant dosage. During a preliminary plant trial on underground UG2 ore, the initial rougher concentrates were characterized by higher PGM concentrate grades and this was in part due to improved chromiter ejection. The concentrate produced from the TTC trial also exhibited a much finer particle size distribution. The overall circuit performance, which included secondary regrind and flotation, showed an increase in concentrate grade of approximately 44% while the tailings grade remained unchanged

The recommended maximum explosive weight for boulder blasting using internal charges is 0.1 O-kg/m” (3.5 oz./yd) (Olofsson, 1988). Normally this charge results in excessive scattering and flyrock, creating increased liability for the operator, especially in congested areas. An alternative technique using smaller explosive charges is being developed at the University of Missouri - Rolla. It is designed to reduce boulder scatter, flyrock and fumes and allows shooting in close proximity, using common blasting products.

"Kidd Creek Mines primarily employs sublevel blasthole stoping for underground mining operations. During pillar recovery in No.1 Mine and panel mining in No.2 Mine, the free standing fill exposures may reach a height of 100 m or more. Consequently, a competent consolidated rockfill has been required to fill the mined openings.Since 1976, a total of more than fifty stopes and pillars have been filled with over four million tonnes of backfill. Fill exposures, up to heights of 100 m, have stood up well after blasting adjacent to the backfill.The fill material consists of a graded aggregate, Portland cement and ground slag. Sand has been occasionally mixed in the fill material to serve as avoid filler. The aggregate is prepared in a fill crushing plant, transported underground through raises, and hauled to the filling stopes by conveyors in No. 1 Mine and by trucks in No.2 Mine.Two mixing methods are currently in use. No. I Mine utilizes the free fall of gravity; the fill materials are sprayed with cement slurry as the aggregate departs from the conveyor into a mixing culvert. The other is the use of a rotary mixer on a batch basis in No. 2 Mine.This paper describes the fill systems, filling operation s, and the backfill quality control practice, together with various testing results related to improving fill quality as well as reducing fill costs.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north o f the city centre of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonnes of copper, zinc, lead, and silver ores annually from its No. 1 and No.2 underground mining operations. IT is very difficult to arrive at exact figures for the cost of maintaining excess capacity of coal mines, but we can approximate the various items. To do this, I will take the Pittsburgh district of Pennsylvania and the other districts can be compared to this one. I believe we can take the depreciation item of plant ac- count as a whole and discount it over a period of 20 years; while this is high for some items it is low for others and I believe it is not far from a safe basis. This equals 5 per cent per year, and this depreciation will take place about as rapidly when not in use as when in operation. A fair value in the Pittsburgh district to- day for plant and houses is close to $4 per ton per annum. At 5 per cent this will equal 20 cents per ton per year. The item of keeping the mine in condition, free from water, etc., will be close to an average of 2y2 cents per ton per annum.

Com a necessidade urgente e constante de aumento da competitividade no cenário atual da mineração, mostra-se fundamental o desenvolvimento constante de novos parâmetros de processo combinados a uma estratégia de manutenção focada não só na disponibilidade dos ativos, e sim no desempenho dos equipamentos. No que tange ao processo de pelotização neste trabalho foi dado foco especificamente na configuração de perfis de queima no forno de grelha móvel, onde foram testados quatro perfis e fixado o perfil nº 04 otimizado via sistema de otimização de processo para níveis de produções diferentes, equilibrando qualidade e consumo específico de gás natural, no período anterior e posterior à parada fria. A partir daí foram analisados parâmetros de qualidade, produção e processo, comparando-os entre antes e após a parada fria. Foram registradas melhoras nos índices de qualidade e redução de aproximadamente 13,50% do consumo específico de gás natural e 10,80% de redução no consumo específico de energia elétrica de ventiladores por níveis de produção.

Attempting to review the fundamental aspects of segregation in steel ingots of all types in a paper of reasonable length, we encounter two difficulties: (I) the fact that a large number of different physical and chemical effects are involved, and (2) rather incomplete and confusing evidence on certain aspects of detail and mechanism in the freezing process in which the segregation effect is involved. The best solution seemed to be to link together most of the underlying factors into a simplified theoretical picture that appears to the writer to explain most of the observed data, in the hope that this will serve as a reasonably good target for discussion and criticism. Segregation effects, especially in steel ingots or castings, are often divided into " microscopic" and "macroscopic," depending on whether the variations in concentration of solutes or dissolved elements in the iron occur as: (I) a periodic variation over the small distances between the nuclei and the surfaces of the primary grains, or (2) as a larger scale effect involving concentration gradients over distances of the order of several inches, more or less. The reason for this somewhat artificial division is, of course, that it is only the macroscopic scale effect that has much practical importance. About the only effect of practical importance that results from microscopic segregation is the banded structure often left in rolled sections, and even this is relatively harmless in most cases. However, the causes of microscopic segregation also untlerly the larger scale effect, so we must first consider matters such as the formation and growth of crystal nuclei, selective freezing and diffusion, and others that are fundamental to all sepregation effects. Undercooling and Nuclei Formation It is probable that although the degree of undercooling is small in iron, as in metals in general, a certain amount of it takes place, and also that the number of crystal nuclei increases very rapidly with increased undercooling below the liquidus temperature. In practical terms this means that the nuclei number illcreases very rapidly with increased cooling or freezing rate, thus being dependent on the rate of heat flow out from the zone of crystallization. Temperature Gradients and Heat Dissipation during Freezing Each pound of steel evolves about 100 B.t.u. when freezing. In addition to this, the temperature gradient in the solidified portion (required to dissipate the heat as freezing progresses into the axis) necessitates a loss of heat required to cool the solid metal below its freezing range, which is equivalent to an amount of not so much less in magnitude. In a 5-ton ingot, the total would include about one million B.t.u. for freezing alone and about 0.4 to 0.5 million B.t.u. for the gradient, up to the end of the freezing period. "Surface coal mining in West Virginia has supplied energy to the eastern coast of the United States for over a century. Over the years, the coal mining industry has been forced to adapt as societal demands regarding health, safety, and environmental impacts have changed. More recent pressure has called for another iteration of change: long-term post-mining sustainability. The research discussed in this paper investigates one potential solution - or component of a solution - to improve the sustainability of surface coal mining in West Virginia: post-mining wind power. The paper begins with an introduction to the Appalachian region of the U.S. and the role that mining has played in its history, followed by a discussion of the need for sustainable mining and how post-mining wind power may help fulfill it. Data processing methodology of field data from monitoring locations is then explained. The results are then used to estimate the electrical output of a wind turbine. This data is then utilized in a case study discussion of one of the monitored sites. The paper concludes with an analysis of the broader implications of the research and a discussion of future work."

The design of the Caldecott 4th Bore, located along State Route 24 in Oakland, California, is based on the principles of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Typical NATM initial support design practices used in Europe were adapted for this project to account for U.S. conditions and requirements, such as degree of experience with NATM construction, the prevailing contractual environment, and preferences for contractual simplicity. Key design features are: (1) support selection criteria based on ground behaviors and ground conditions; (2) a prescriptive design with allowance for support adjustments based on observations during construction; and (3) organization of support requirements into only four major support categories, while permitting some adjustment for variations in ground behaviors and conditions using a few subtypes and additional support measures.

Destaca um grande avanço nos resultados obtidos na gestão das atividades de inspeção dos vasos de pressão e caldeira da ArcelorMittal Tubarão.

Within the last decade, major research discoveries have been made in the submarine realm of magmatic and hydrothermal activity of arc-backarc systems in the southwestern Pacific. These include identification of numerous particulate-poor, gas-rich (CO2-CH4) hydrothermal plumes emanating from arc front volcanoes, actively forming porphyry-copper-gold style mineralisation, and new backarc spreading systems erupting alkali basalt-trachyandesite magmas. Major goals of these studies have been identification of modern analogs to ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide ore bodies, and quantification of the volatile fluxes though supra-subduction zone systems.

This paper describes a design process for piled raft foundations supporting high-rise buildings. The design process comprises an initial stage of geotechnical site characterization using the results of investigation boreholes to prepare a subsurface model and derive geotechnical parameters for raft and pile design from empirical correlations. Following this a preliminary analysis is undertaken using a combination of elastic theory and allowances for non linear behaviour of the piled raft system to assess the viability of such a foundation system and any potential advantages of a piled raft over conventional fully piled foundation systems. Finally, a detailed analysis is undertaken using the GARP8 computer program. Case studies where this design process has been successfully used to design a more efficient piled raft system that has resulted in significant cost and time savings compared to conventional bored pile foundation options are also described.

The high cost of constructing mineral processing plants in remote locations warrants a close examination of the alternatives available for reducing the amount of on-site construction work. Among the alternatives are portable process plants, modular design and barge mounted plants. Each alternative has certain advantages as well as limitations depending upon specific conditions. On the basis of practical experience and engineering analysis, the paper examines the potential benefits to be realized by these techniques and summarizes the conditions required to obtain them. The potential savings indicated by such studies should encourage consideration of innovative design features for new plants located in remote areas.

Tonnage oxygen plants are or can be made available in sizes ranging from 150 to 1,000 tons per day. Capital requirements are estimated from $5,400 to $14,700 per daily ton, depending upon size of plant, cycle employed, and purity and discharge pressure of the product. Similarly, operating costs before return on investment will range from $4.80 to $10 per ton. INTRODUCTION Several processes4 5/ that can be used to convert coal to synthetic liquid fuels, synthetic pipeline gas, or hydrogen require high-purity oxygen as one of the basic raw materials. Depending on the and product and its specific use, the oxygen required will be of 95 or 99.5 percent purity. The quantity required, in turn, depends on the process for which the oxygen will be used and the size of the processing plant and will range from 150 to 4,000 tons per day.
